Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the picturesque hills of Sermoneta, about 85 km southeast of Rome, the Castello Caetani di Sermoneta stands as a magnificent testament to medieval architecture. Constructed in the early 1200s for the Annibaldi family, this fortress not only served as a military stronghold but also as an elegant noble residence. Visitors can explore its well-preserved interiors adorned with stunning frescoes depicting mythological figures.
We spent two nights in a local guest house. The castle is a very quiet place. Parking is available in front of the walls. Groceries are more expensive here, so I recommend shopping in the nearby towns. Restaurants, bars, and ice cream for children are of good quality. The surrounding hills are suitable for cycling.

Medium-sized castle with a lot of history. The in wall corridor and the horses' room were the highlight of the visit. The only option is to go in with the castle guide after paying and booking on the internet. The guide does not speak English, so having no other option than paying the guide made the experience worse. The visit takes 1h and costs 8,25 eur. If you get there with no booking, you probably won't find anyone.
Orion D — Google review
Beautiful city, worth visiting. Parking available outside the city. Steep roads, so wear comfortable shoes.

Last time we came here there was an event and the castle was open but always nice to go all the way to capture the views. Such a lovely place to visit when we come to see family in Latina. Worth a drive up to Sermoneta for sure.

It is always impressive to see buildings that have a lot of history in them. I really liked the castle, not because it is full of things to see (which isn't the case here), but because I like to imagine how people lived here. The was the Caetani, or Gaetani, family that owned it and lived behind the walls of this castle, along with their army. I always imagine when I visit something old, how was life there, how they lived, what did they do. I liked the feeling of stepping inside the chambers where they ate, they drinked, they cooked and they slept. I also loved the walk on and inside the wall of the castle. One small negative thing is that I haven't seen online of they have an English guide or time. I went with a group of Italians, and I understand a little bit, but it would have been great to have an English option. The town surrounding the castle is also beautiful. You can find a few restaurants which looked good.
Marius — Google review
Very interesting and picturesque place! Unfortunately, excursion is held only in Italian, but they gave us an English brochure, so that we could roughly understand what we're looking at :) With this excursion you go through different parts of the castle, including cellars and tower walls. For us the latter was the most exciting! Absolutely not suitable for disabled people as you have to walk many times up and down the stairs. Some stairs are rather steepy! Though it appeared to be doable with small children.
Anna K — Google review
A nice place to visit as well if you want to visit the Ninfa Garden. The guide, carissima Signorina Flaminia, and her team are very nice and professional indeed.
Ady — Google review
The Castle was nice. Don't expect a typical movie castle especially inside is pretty empty, but for the price is worth a shot! Ah be careful as every castle there's scary ghost :)

The Loggia dei Mercanti, although lacking in excitement and recent restoration, impresses with its placement within the charming village and its commanding high position. Sermoneta itself is a picturesque town that should not be missed. Additionally, the historical landmark holds significance as it was the setting for a renowned scene in the film "Non ci resta che piangere," where an important reminder of mortality was portrayed.
(Translated by Google) In Troisi's film. The Loggia dei Mercanti was built in 1446 by order of Onorato Caetani. The purpose of its construction was to make it the seat of the Municipality of Sermoneta as well as for commercial exchanges and meetings in which the entire population participated. You can see the arches, the wooden ceiling and underneath there were the stables where the animals were sold or exchanged. Even today it represents one of the most characteristic places in the country and a meeting point for citizens. The structure, in addition to having a historical-cultural importance, also has a great aesthetic and artistic value thanks to the typical construction of the Middle Ages which was designed and built following certain criteria of monumental beauty in Gothic style. It should be remembered that she was the protagonist of Massimo Troisi's appearance in the famous 1984 film "All We Can Do is Cry". Worth seeing. Hello from Roby and Lucy from Sant'Anastasia (Na) (Original) Nel film di Troisi.

The first room with the large altarpieces by Francesco da Castello, Siciolante... the second room, which was the oratory of the Battenti, is entirely frescoed by the hand of Fiorentini with in particular the panels of the washing of the feet and the last supper. It's a shame that due to an unfortunate exhibition choice, panels were placed right in front of the episode of this last depiction which remains only in the distant memory of those who managed to see it. The Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption is a historic place of worship situated in Sermoneta. It was constructed during the 8th or 9th centuries atop the remains of an ancient pagan temple. (Translated by Google) The beautiful Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta has Romanesque origins and was built in the 12th century before being renovated in Gothic style according to Cistercian taste. The facade integrates a tall and slender bell tower in Romanesque style with mullioned windows and Roman columns. Inside, the cathedral is divided into three naves separated by squared stone columns supporting cross vaults. The side naves house four chapels. Some of the countless frescoes decorating the walls date back to the medieval period, while others were added in subsequent centuries and represent biblical scenes and saints. The main altar, made of marble, dominates the central apse. Above the altar there is a beautiful wooden crucifix of great impact although enclosed in a canopy. In the first chapel on the right you can admire the valuable "Madonna degli Angeli" by Benozzo Gozzoli, a work from 1457. The Cosmatesque floor with colored geometric inlays is beautiful.

(Translated by Google) We sat down and the waiter (a very kind and helpful man) immediately took our orders and brought us bread and water (we were eating alone). The problem was that many items on the menu were unavailable, and we had to almost completely adapt to what the waiter listed (really limited choice). He brought us the three platters for €25 each, which I think were a bit overpriced (not on the menu), then brought us the various first courses and cuts of meat we had ordered… more people arrived at the other tables… and from there, chaos ensued! We sat for over 40 minutes with our "dirty" plates in front of us, unable to order dessert because the waiter couldn't fit at our table anymore. At one point, I got up to ask for dessert, and after another 15 minutes, it arrived! He brought some REALLY RIDICULOUS slices... very thin portions of sour cherry tart, which didn't even taste like anything... I think they had been there for at least 3 days... (€5 each!), and we had to eat them with all the dirty plates under our noses. I repeat, it's not the guy's fault; in fact, he was quick and helpful, it's simply the fact that he was alone managing several tables! Oh... On top of that, we ordered a €20 bottle of wine, but they later let us know it wasn't there, and that for the same price they would bring us another one that normally costs €25, but when the bill arrived we noticed it had been marked down to €25 anyway! In short, it wasn't a great experience. The food was quite good, as was the location... it's very evocative to dine under the merchants' loggia... but I think the service was poor and the prices a bit too high (even the small Cokes at €3.50 each I think are a bit excessive). It was a Monday, and almost everything was closed, so in a sense we were "forced" to dine there. If I were to go back, I don't think I would.

Trattoria Ghost is a charming and picturesque restaurant located beneath the castle in Sermoneta. The owner is known for being friendly and accommodating, adding to the inviting atmosphere of the place. While the menu may not be extensive, the pasta dishes are highly recommended, especially the tris di primi. Visitors praise the delicious local food and highlight dishes such as carciofi and pappardelle.
Finding this place felt otherworldly, we came here on the recommendation of our accomodation host who on our behalf requested they open just for us as it was a Monday night in winter where most of the restaurants are usually closed, we were warmly greeted by the owner who despite our language barrier and lack of Italian was able to present us with their house specialty of sheep’s ricotta with honey and crushed hazelnuts and the most delicious fagioli beans as starters, we didn’t even bother to look at the menu after that, we just trusted we were in good hands and the rest of the meals were perfect and delicious, lovely thick al dente pappardelle pasta with porcini and truffle, we were taken to food heaven and glad we trusted and went with the owners recommendations, it’s places like these that leave a big lasting memory not to be forgotten. This place is aptly named as I thought I had imagined it as it was too good to be true! This was the true and authentic Italian dining experience I’d been craving!!

Fantastic homemade pasta, super cozy and authentic atmosphere and the tiramisu was next level!! Super friendly stuff, we felt right at home and more than fair prices - loved this place. 10/10 would come again ❤️

The pappardelle pasta is their specialty per the menu. Of course it’s served al dente as one would expect, but I’m sorry, it was undercooked and very hard. So much so I raised the issue with the male owner and was told that’s how it’s supposed to be. The sauce was very good, as was the ricotta with honey and almonds that came with the meal. I asked a group of 4 that just ate and asked if they too had the dish. Yes they did, and said the owner says it’s supposed to be that way. They thought it was too hard like me, and I’m a cook. I’m not trying to bash this husband/wife team, but when people are complaining about the undercooked pasta, do something about it! Half my dish I rolled into a napkin and dumped it. Total bill food €14, water €2 and €2 coperto. That’s €18. Without giving me a written bill, he took my €20 and didn’t provide €2 change. So his real coperto was over 25% of the bill. I decided to leave than continue with this place. If you’re so hard up for business that you decide to give yourself an extra tip, then that’s on you. My advice to others is careful with what you order, and insist on a written bill itemizing everything before handing over your money.

The best! I’ve been here couple of times. For me it is worth to get the car from Rome and to come here to take a dinner. Not because of the uncountable choice or huge fantasy, but because of the heartwarming owner and the charming simplicity. “Ci penso io” means “I’ll take care of it” - and this is the motto of the owner. Stefano, the owner, will bring you his unchanging antipasto (appetiser) ricotta with honey and beans, after he’ll give you just some choices of the sauce for his best of the best pappardelle pasta, and one or two proposition for the second course (usually, little goat or buffalo meat). There no menu!!! Neither it is a place for cranky and picky tourists!! This is the place to experience home atmosphere restaurant. P.s.: not to miss the best tiramisù for ever. There no more true full of mascarpone cheese tiramisù in Rome. Only by Stefano!

Amazing trattoria with delicious local food! I love everything about this place, lovely service, typical dishes, by the way carciofi are otherworldly! …and look at these pappardelle! Bravo!

Nothing special, even average. I had wild boar but it was like just a little bit smell of it in it, no taste of it. Tiramisu was not good either, served i plastic cup with a plastic spoon. Chairs and tables were plastic. The person who got our orders burped twice. Red house wine was not anything special either. We were asked to pay in cash. We regretted in short.

If you are reading this, you are the planner in your group. And you rock. You’re not going to be like all of the other tourists who blindly go to the restaurants on the main plaza that have more customers than they know what to do with. No, you are going to seek out the worthy, the tasty, and the intimate where your presence will be noticed and appreciated. And you’ll find this if you walk just a few dozen meters up the hill and round the bend: Trattoria Ghost. I might have dreamed it. After trying a first place that was highly rated but now closed, I opted for one of the busy places on the main plaza. They had run out of food! I walked to the other busy restaurant also on the main plaza. After standing for 10 minutes it was clear this wouldn’t lead to a meal anytime soon. So I took a chance and walked up the hill in search of this mysterious diner, hidden away from the bustle of the tourist center. And I was greatly rewarded for my search. I was the only customer there, and the cook and owner both were happy to see me. They treated me to a complimentary place of fresh ricotta cheese, drizzled with honey and crushed nuts. They brought a basket of fresh bread which I quickly devoured with the cheese. This I followed with fresh ravioli. It was a magical night and I even translated my experience on my phone into Italian so the owner could see how touched I was by the experience. We shared a warm handshake. Don’t follow the crowd - find the Ghost!

The best entrecôte ever. And served by the nicest butcher we've ever met, and in cosy enviroments. Highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) After the visit to the Caetani Castle, we were looking for a place to have lunch, and this restaurant intrigued us. Small but comfortable room. Friendly, approachable staff, just the way we like it. We all ate a first course, except for one cut. The only note was that there was chilli on my plate, which was not mentioned when describing the dish. It would have been a serious problem if I had been allergic. I recommend saying this every time you list the dishes to customers. High price, but in line with the place and the prices of the surrounding restaurants.

Even from the inside dining room, with the door open, you can enjoy the view of a beautiful village alley. The staff is friendly and helpful, contributing to the enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere. The food is excellent and seasonal. The strozzapreti with ragù is wonderful and balanced. The unripe peaches with truffle are also worth trying.

(Translated by Google) Suggestive place, located immediately under the Caetani Castle. The owner is a very kind and courteous person with the customers. We were there on Sunday 18 May, we were immediately welcomed with the smile that is due not to guests but to friends. The table service was punctual and precise and the dishes halfway between tradition and innovation. They are also professional truffle hunters, so I highly recommend tasting the truffle-based dishes too.

We ate really well. The starter platter was plentiful and delicious. Three first courses... tagliatelle with mushrooms, fettuccine with wild boar, and tagliolini with truffle, all extremely good and prepared with top-quality ingredients. Excellent haul!
