An amazing piece of artwork and history - a place on the MUST visit list in Italy. The crypt is called “the small Cappella Sistina”. BUT BE WARE - the employees are extremely vile and hostile to visitors both Italian snd foreigners. They come up with all reasons not to let you in. We returned three times in one day and at the end had to make a scandal to be let in. Masses, christening and big tourist groups cause closing of the museum. Make an appointment for the visit upfront, be there early and stand your ground with the narrow minded employees. You can also try to call upfront to check for the working hours of the day.

A bit expensive, but it was a beautiful stop. The crypt is amazing.

We went to the Crypt of St Magnus - we should have checked the times beforehand because we had to wait until the lights which illuminate the crypt came on, It was no big deal because it gave us time to explore the town and have a quiet drink in the nearby piazza. The cost was nine euros a head (as of September 2022) but well worth it. The cathedral is beautiful but the crypt is something else with intricate marbled mosaic floors and some interesting frescos.
Joe S — Google review
Gorgeous place, especially the crypt, and very interesting. 9€ is a fair price for the size and richness of experience. Constructive criticism: it's very inconvenient to have to send a booking request email, and have to wait for a reply, and to have to choose an exact entry time, especially if you're travelling a considerable distance. Also, the free app with audioguide is a great asset, however it would be good to provide the link to download it on the website, so you can get it before your visit, plus at times it's difficult to understand which exhibit the guide is referring to, so referrence numbers in the corner of each exhibit would be helpful. Overall, highly recommended.
Chanelle H — Google review
We visited on a Saturday, waited an hour for it to open at 1500. When we entered, we were informed that the crypt was closed until 5 for a mass going on. You would think they would put this one the door or something. Welcome to Italy. We came back on Sunday morning for our scheduled visit, but were 5 minutes late due to having to park half a kilometer away. Both days we encountered employees that were as vile and hateful as we’ve experienced in Italy, and I’ve lived here for two and a half years. It’s almost like it’s a prerequisite to be venomous to work there. There was one lady that worked there that came Over to assist my wife with the elevator, she was gracious, however the elevator did not work. The church and crypt are beautiful and worth visiting if you can get by Cruella and Lucretia.
Scot P — Google review
The place is nice to visit and quite old. The crypts are also cool, but the lighting system, which turns on/off and you can only enter them once, is a bit weird. I do understand the reasoning, but it does not really allow for a perfect visit. Maybe with a guide it does.
Cas “ — Google review
Great place o visit if you are history freak. The underground Chappel is a jewel with most astonishing early medieval frescoes all over the walls and ceiling. In the museum you may found a great collection of XIII c clergy robes, another frescoes, a copy of famous Corpus Iuris Civilis from a year 1518 and the remains of medieval mosaics, helas, on the Roman stellas. The reservation is necessary on the proper hour. The museum is not open, as it is stated, from 9 to 13 on Sundays. Actually, the chappel with frescoes is closed at 11:30 (!!!) already and later there is a Holy mess, while the rest of museum, only with mosaics and roman remains stays open. May by in the afternoon is is better organized.

Beautiful structure, art, and history combined. We had to make a reservation ahead of time, but even booking late in the evening the day before, they were able to accommodate us with no issues. Not a long tour, but a must-see when in the area.

Cripta di San Magno

4.6
(107)
Christian church
The Cripta di San Magno, located in the Cathedral, is renowned worldwide and features impressive Arcazzi monuments. Visitors can also explore the Treasury Museum and Lapidarium within the cathedral. Although some visitors suggest that more lighting and explanations from guides would enhance the experience, many still consider it a must-see attraction. The crypt itself may have limited cell phone signal and unreliable museum wifi, but it offers a rich historical narrative.

(Translated by Google) Visiting the Crypt of San Magno, inside Anagni Cathedral, is a truly breathtaking experience. Known as the Sistine Chapel of the Middle Ages, it houses a cycle of 13th-century frescoes that completely cover the walls and vaults: a riot of colors, symbols, and stories that transform the space into a painted book of history and spirituality. The visit time is limited (about 20 minutes), but it's enough to be captivated by the beauty of the frescoes. I highly recommend arriving on time and, if possible, taking a guide or audio guide to better grasp the hidden messages behind the images.

(Translated by Google) If in Anagni it is worth going to see the Boniface VIII palace, even more worth a visit is the cathedral museum with the wonderful crypt of San Magno, the first evangelizer of the City of Anagni persecuted, similarly to the martyr Miniato in Florence, during the persecutions of Decius. The crypt of San Magno who is also the patron saint of Anagni, is certainly the highlight of the Museum. Built in the 11th century thanks to the bishop Pietro da Salerno and frescoed a century later in three different moments by the so-called Masters of Anagni. It represents one of the masterpieces of the era with an exceptional pictorial cycle that tells the stories of the salvation of man from his creation to the end of time. The floor in Cosmatesque style is also spectacular. Superlativo Costo 9€

(Translated by Google) Wonder of the Middle Ages! As soon as you go down the stairs that lead to the crypt from the cathedral you are immersed in this mammoth pictorial work, and you have the impression of being part of the paintings or of being inside an illuminated manuscript as the visual experience is 360°. The colorful chiseled floor further enriches the artistic layout. The vaults and chapels must be "read" and visited through a very specific path to understand the intentions of the authors (divided into three schools) and unite the different cycles represented with a logical thread. In this regard, the few panels present which briefly illustrate some scenes are not at all sufficient but I highly recommend either reading up online in advance or visiting the crypt with a trained guide. It is possible to stay for only 10 minutes, at the end of which the lighting system automatically turns off and reactivates after a period of time in order to preserve the frescoes. A real dive into the most enlightened Middle Ages!

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Mary

4.7
(101)
Catholic cathedral
The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Mary, located in Anagni, is a stunning example of Romanesque architecture. Built between 1071 and 1105 by Bishop Pietro of Salerno, it boasts a magnificent sandstone facade and a graceful Romanesque bell tower. The interior features a crypt containing the tomb of Saint Magnus of Anagni, as well as exquisite frescoes and cosmatesque floor decorations created by the Cosmati family around 1230.
Stunning. Well worth the visit and entrance ticket to the museum.

(Translated by Google) It is a stupendous church, a logical consequence of the importance that Anagni had in the Middle Ages, when numerous pontiffs were born there and it was the papal residence and seat, even if its importance then rapidly declined. From a historical point of view, the best-known episode is the so-called "Anagni slap", suffered by Pope Boniface VIII, which occurred right in the annexes of the cathedral. The church can be visited freely. However, to access the wonderful Crypt of San Magno you need to pay entry to the cathedral museum. The construction of the church dates back to the years 1072-1104 and on the outside it is in Romanesque style with Emilian-Lombard influences. The Tatar stone façade dominates the churchyard together with the magnificent bell tower, also Romanesque. The interiors, however, are predominantly Gothic in style. The cosmatesque floor is amazing. The visit should be combined with that of the adjacent museum. Not to be missed.

(Translated by Google) Dedicated to Maria Santissima Annunziata, the cathedral of Anagni impresses the visitor with the majestic grandeur of the sandstone façade and the supple vertical thrust of the Romanesque bell tower. The Romanesque style of the cathedral's architecture is also visible on the side overlooking the square, where both the blessing loggia and the staircase which makes the curvature of the apse suggestive appear well preserved in their original thirteenth-century structure. The interior has in the Cosmatesque floor the medieval magnificence elevated to a distinctive sign of the sublime work created by the workers of the Roman Cosmati marble workers, led by Cosmas. The geometric signs are the distinctive features of the thirteenth-century flooring of the cathedral whose interior preserves the Romanesque structure integrated with the Gothic. The decorations of the apse are nineteenth-century, created with Gagliardi's usual pictorial mastery. The traveler stops to admire everything with the sumptuous wonder that follows such beauty and then follows the numbered route provided by the museum order.

First of all a piece of advice: the cathedral is closed between 1pm and 3pm, while the Palazzo di Bonifacio (June 2025), on weekends, is open during that time slot; for those with a tight schedule and who want to optimize their time a bit, it can be a good tip. The ticket is €6 (children don't pay), at the entrance the very kind staff provides an audio guide (included): listening to each voice, the visit lasts about an hour. The highlight is definitely the two frescoed rooms on the upper floor. There are many copies of important works (Arnolfo di Cambio above all) present in other museums. The Park of Remembrance in Anagni is definitely worth a visit. It offers a striking display during the carnival floats parade, creating a vibrant atmosphere with a big party in the square. Various traditional treats like Castagnole and frappe are served for free, accompanied by wine. The overall experience is truly beautiful, showcasing the town's rich cultural heritage. If it were given more recognition and well-maintained by its citizens, it could rival any other park in terms of quality and appeal.

(Translated by Google) It is located in Anagni, under the main square of the town. Fairly well maintained, it is the ideal place to stop for a moment before continuing your visit to the town. The view and the fountain in the center of the park are beautiful (Original) Si trova ad Anagni, sotto la piazza principale del paese. Restaurant
Ristorante Bar Pizzeria Vittorio Emanuele offers a delightful dining experience with its incredibly delicious and flavorful dishes. The chicory is expertly sliced and sautéed, while the crumbled aspect falls slightly short of expectations. Despite this, the prices may be a discordant element, but it's a prevalent issue in today's society that should not necessarily be blamed on the restaurant. The outstanding service is characterized by an uncommon kindness and attentiveness towards customers.
Glowing Hospitality and Delicious Food! I made a reservation for a table of 8 for a late lunch which was a key factor in our decision. Once we arrived, we knew we found the right place. The staff greeted us with joy and had prepared a beautiful table with views of the piazza and the hills— spectacular! The service was attentive and the food was delicious. The Made in House truffle lasagna was amazing!

Amazingly great restaurant, food was very very good, so fresh and tasty with excellent friendly service

Nice, food is very good but unfortunately portions are quite wretched. Service is good, waiters are kind and sometimes they also tell you stories. Atmosphere is good just for the fact that you are in the main square, but personally I would prefer a different kind of vibes; the place is modern but I would prefer a place that better integrates with the medieval atmosphere of the city

Stopped at anagni for a lunch break during the trip Rome-Naples and discovered this wonderful pizzeria! Perfectly in the center of the city with its magic medieval atmosphere we ate a delicious pizza and tiramisu. Got no problems speaking english with the waiters and they are very funny. If i’ll ever get the chance to return to italy i’ll definitively come again!!

Wine bar
Nestled in the heart of Anagni, "La Bottega dei Papi" is a charming wine bar and kitchen that serves as an ideal spot for an aperitif. With its inviting atmosphere, guests can choose to relax indoors or enjoy the lovely views from the outdoor seating overlooking the square. The staff here are not only professional but also warm and friendly, ensuring a delightful experience as you sip on their intriguing selection of wines, including local favorites like Cesanese del Piglio.
Very good restaurant, well priced and VERY good food and service quickly 👌🏾

Went here to celebrate my birthday. If you are looking for an atmospheric restaurant with good food and excellent house wine .. give this place a miss. The wine was awful, unfortunately we ordered a bottle and had to leave half of it. We had focaccia, which was completely dry and topped with a few thick slices of very fatty, tasteless pork .. inedible. We also had the thinnest, smallest, meatless lasagne I've ever seen. The decor is basic, the place is small with very high ceilings giving it a cell like feel. The door to the toilet is actually in the restaurant, which somebody had left open ewww .. is that even legal?

Two glasses of Cesanese del Piglio wine with some vegetables and ham overlooking the square. Everything perfect. (Translated by Google) A real surprise! The restaurant is in the heart of the center of Anagni, a very welcoming medieval village steeped in history. The environment is very welcoming, you can choose whether to stay inside or outside, on the square. The staff are very professional and, thanks to their efficiency and friendliness, allow you to relax and fully enjoy the experience. The wine list is interesting, as are the choices on the menu, halfway between tradition and modernity. The courses are carefully prepared, tasty and delicious, with large portions. I recommend the platter with mixed cheeses and cold cuts, the porchetta, the tartare and the salmon and avocado sandwich. (Original) Una vera sorpresa!

(Translated by Google) For me the stars are 4.5 ⭐. Wine shop in the Piazza del Duomo of Anagni with tables outside where it is possible to taste excellent wine and delicious dishes: focaccia with Ariccia porchetta, portions of lasagna with meat sauce, aubergine millefeuille, buffalo mozzarella and smoked salmon. The choice of wines, bubbles and gins is wide. I drank a delicious Cesanese del Piglio from a local winery, organic and without sulphites (I recommend it). The courteous and professional staff and the reasonable prices, also considering the location, make it a place to return to. Greater attention to updating the menu (board of the day and paper), especially if the products are not available shortly after opening.⁰ (Original) Per me le stelle sono 4.5 ⭐.

(Translated by Google) Really nice and welcoming place with nice, friendly, kind and competent staff. It offers, of course, an interesting variety of wines and the food is good. In a very hot and rather deserted Anagni, the "La bottega dei Papi" wine shop was a very pleasant oasis in a spectacular setting. Restaurant
Ristorante del Gallo is a historic restaurant located in Anagni, offering a charming and authentic dining experience. Situated near the medieval town, it boasts a traditional ambiance and is known for its delicious vegan pasta. The restaurant's location allows visitors to explore the surrounding area, including surprise gardens, restaurants, and architectural gems scattered throughout the town's narrow streets.
I went there only one time, wanted to try "abbacchio" (meat of young lamb) but was convinced to take "Timballo alla Bonifacio" (pasta with meat chops wrapped in salty raw ham). Uau! Next time I'll try abbacchio, but the pasta was super!

Everything was perfect, from the food quality and taste to the prices and staff. Only one huge negative and crazy irrigated thing, no English menu. Please for the love of God print just one menu in English. Almost 800 reviews on trip advisor and still no English menu. Please 🤞 Ps. The grilled chicken was amazing.

We tried the Timballo and the Amatriciana which is my favourite Italian dish of all time - so I know this dish very well! I must say that this Amatriciana was AMAZING!!! So well prepared, tasteful, piccante, beautiful arranged on the plate and with a good amount of cheese. Perfection. I look forward to come back to have this dish again - and maybe try out their version of the Gricia. Thank you chef of ‘Del Gallo’ 🙏😍

Tried this restaurant based on the reviews on this site and it exceeded expectations. I had tagliolini pomodoro and my husband had lamb. The pasta was how I remembered Italian food should taste and the lamb was tender and cooked to perfection - the taste brought back floods of childhood memories of times spent with family here in Italy. Even the salad, which was simply a green salad, was so tasty. I'll certainly come back again, despite the 1 hour distance. The added bonus is Agnani itself which is a jewel of a town.

Carbonara with bacon . No guanciale . Scandalous for a restaurant in Lazio region . How can you charge 13 euro for a carbonara with bacon . If you dont have guanciale on the kitchen dont put carbonara on the menu !
