San Nicola Arcella in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in San Nicola Arcella, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
San Nicola Arcella is a small seaside town on Calabria’s Tyrrhenian coast, known for its dramatic cliffs, clear water and sandy coves. Its standout sight is the Arco Magno, a natural rock arch framing a sheltered beach that’s especially striking at sunset. The historic center, set on a bluff, offers views over the Gulf of Policastro and a quieter, local atmosphere than many larger resorts. It also makes a convenient base for exploring nearby coastal towns and boat trips along the rugged Riviera dei Cedri.
With favorites like Il Casale, Marinella Beach, and Piccolo Paradiso, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Ristorante Bar Furano and Piccolo Paradiso so you can get the best taste of San Nicola Arcella while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Spiaggia dell'Arcomagno is a must-see natural wonder in the San Nicola Arcella area of Calabria. The trek to this hidden gem involves a walk along a rocky beach and past sparkling turquoise waters, but the effort is well worth it. This secluded spot features a massive arch eroded by crashing waves, creating a unique and picturesque cove.
A bit of an effort and the time limit is definitely a bit big-brother but understandable, this place is very much worth the visit. The walk there is beautiful and the location itself a beautiful little oasis.

All you need to know about visiting this place: 1. How to get there and where to park. -------------------------------------- The easiest is to navigate to Lido Nettuno and find parking there. At the end of that road there is a big parking lot that costs 5 Eur for the entire day. I couldn't find the 3 eur parking that other reviews mentioned. Either it got more expensive or I couldn't find the cheap one. If you park here, you can walk towards the beach and see a small booth where you pay the entrance fee. You can also park the car on the road that leads to that area but pay attention if there are signs that forbid it. Another way to reach the spot is to navigate to Paradise beach and park there. I don't know the price of the parking though. From there you need to climb a bit and then get down to another beach, walk across it and then you should see a ticket booth. How much it costs: ------------------- 3 Eur per person and 1.5 for children. You can pay with cash or credit card and you need to save you receipt and show it 2 times along the way. Walking there: --------------- After you pay you walk 1 minute on the beach along the rock until you reach the staircase, where the 1st check point is located. The person there will check your receipt. Then you start a climb up the cliff. It's about 5 min up with stairs. The view as you go up gets better and better. Once you reach the top it's downhill for 5 more minutes until you reach the 2nd checkpoint where you show your ticket. Then you can finally get down to the small beach and see the beautiful Arc. When can you visit and for how long? -------------------------------------- According to the signs the site is open between 8am and 8pm. Because it's a popular and small beach, you can only say up to 30 min, and sometimes even 20. When you purchase the ticket they will tell you exactly how long, according to the water conditions and the amount of people. We stayed there 20min as the waters were rough and you weren't allowed to go in the water - only stand or sit on the edges of the water (the currents are dangerous when it's a rough sea). When it's calm, you can definitely swim a bit but not close to the Arc. What to bring there: --------------------- Basically nothing 🙂 a small bag with a bottle of water, sunscreen if needed, camera/ cellphone etc. no food is allowed in order to keep the place clean. You also can't bring blankets or big things like inflatable boats. You can't bring sun umbrellas as well. Just bring yourself and walking sandals (best option) or shoes. Flip-flops are OK but it's a rocky path so it's up to you. You can put your stuff anywhere at the beach and there are some spots with shade and some with sun, depending on the time of the day (at 11am you'll have both). So is it worth it? ----------------- I think so! 3 Eur entrance fee PP for 20-30 min, plus the parking cost can be annoying, but if you are in the area and feel.like having a nice break/easy adventure - I think it is. You can spend the rest of the day or a few hours at the official nearby beach (Lido Nettuno) which has everything you need. That way the parking pays off! I hope that helps! Enjoy 😊

⸻ Absolutely beautiful spot! The natural rock arch and crystal-clear water make Playa dell’Arcomagno unforgettable. The walk down is a bit steep, but it’s worth it. Best to visit early or at sunset to avoid crowds — truly a hidden gem in Calabria. 🌊✨

One of the best or the best panoramic beach in italy. The arch is georgeous. The place is a truly gem. Water crystal clear blue and very calm. Is a must see beach. Try not to go in august. Is too many ppl and they make u pay the entrance and on top of that they time you. I think they give 20 mins. Not good.

This is a really beautiful place, but.... I didn't go because the hike there was too difficult for me. I was afraid of getting hurt. My husband went and took stunning pictures. The whole set-up is a big money making racket. First you have to pay €6 to park. Then you have to pay€ 4 as an entrance fee. For what? This is a natural phenomenon. Why do you need to pay. I paid for nothing because the walk was too difficult for me. You can take a boat there, but for €20 each?? Come on, this whole thing is a big rip-off!

This small beach is truly a pearl. Crystal clear water and a sunset where the sun's rays enter the door. Beautiful see, beautiful panorama, great and clean water.

Great Arch Cave (Grotta del Saraceno)

Hiking area
The Great Arch Cave, also known as Grotta del Saraceno, is a breathtaking destination located near the picturesque Arco Magno beach in San Nicola Arcella. This stunning rock formation not only offers protection from the sea but also creates a unique bay that boasts incredible underwater scenery. Historically, this area served as a mooring point for Saracen pirates and is situated close to the striking Rock of Scorzone.
Highly recommend to come here before the season starts . The weather stays nice for long, and to be able to see this beauty without the crowd is so worth it. Trip during the day for the picnic or evening sunset watching - you can't go wrong. Pictures taken mid-April.

We have nearly decided to skip this beach and this would have been a terrible mistake. Beach is absolutely stunning, one of the best we have ever been to. The views are spectacular and you will definitely have some perfect pictures from your vacation, but besides that the water is excellent - refreshing, not too cold, with occasional cold currents. The walk is a bit of a challenge, but we went with a 6 year old and it was completely manageable. The result is well worth it anyway.
Andrius U — Google review
Was unaware that you must buy tickets at the beach entry before the hike to it. You can only stay 30 minutes, but that's plenty of time for a photo op and a fantastic swim. Then you can hike out and swim on the beaches around the area. It's such a stunning, wonderful place!!

Amazing place to visit and swim. Very safe and easy to access.
Georgios D — Google review
Beautiful way to spend time in Italy. A relatively cheap fare (15 euro) got each person a guided trip around the island with entry into two of the caves and half an hour beach time in one of the enclaves. The latter makes for great holiday photos, as do the cave entries where you can feed fishes and they will huddle up to the surface in that perfectly clear water. Overall, highly recommended, a shame to miss if in the area. The guide speaks Italian, only Italian, but you can figure things out even without the story and his voice and mannerisms somehow add to the experience. Tickets are purchased on the spot, if the boat is not there at the moment you can wait in the shade or entertain yourself with a drink at the panini bar.
George L — Google review
Must see place when in Calabria. Quite easy access to beach from a parking. But to great arch cave (or Cave if Saracen) you need to take some small mountain path of 1000m (see photos). You can also access it from north but there there is no easy access from parking. The place for parking - Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 40, 87020
Kamil N — Google review
This place was unreal. The hike from the parking lot was 10-15mins. The water was warm and had cold spots from the tide coming in from sea. No sand on this beach just pebbles. Bring a beach blanket and wear shoes for the hike.

Marinella Beach is situated in front of the renowned Scoglio del Coniglio (Rabbit Rock) in Palinuro. It stands out among the beaches in the area for its unspoiled natural beauty and Mediterranean surroundings. Once a small port, it now offers a tranquil bay experience. Visitors can enjoy well-kept facilities and services, including beach chair rentals and a bar with a variety of food options. The friendly staff provide excellent service, even offering drink delivery to beach umbrellas.
We had absolutely amazing time at the beach. Unexpected gem. Service is amazing. Couldn’t complain. They offer cold showers for free. Hot shower for $0.50. Everyone at this place was super attentive and very generous. Francesca from reception was super helpful. Nuri was absolutely amazing. He was very attentive. We will def go back there.

(Translated by Google) First time for us in this establishment on the small seafront of San Nicola. Polite and smiling staff, very well-kept beach, clean bathrooms, well-stocked bar. Front row umbrella with two loungers €18. Bar prices a little above average. Hot showers paid with a token. Possibility of enjoying an aperitif directly under the umbrella. Positive experience, but I think that the standard of a bit all the beach establishments on this small but pretty stretch of beach is high. The only flaw (predictable) is the impossibility of leaving the car on the street, forced to choose the paid parking. From this year the surprise: the parking in front of the Crawford (associated? I don't know) applies the hourly rate instead of the daily rate applied until last year, so perhaps it is better to find out about the prices of the other parking lots in the area before choosing it instinctively as we did, tempted by the idea of then only having to cross the road. Advised. Docce calde a pagamento col gettone. Consigliato.

On your third day in San Nicola Arcella, make sure to visit Torre Crawford, an ancient tower offering stunning panoramic views of the town and its surroundings. Named after the American novelist Francis Marion Crawford, the tower is steeped in local history and legends. It's a great place to immerse yourself in the area's culture while taking in breathtaking vistas of the Gulf of Policastro.
(Translated by Google) The Crawford Tower is one of the hidden jewels of San Nicola Arcella, located on a promontory that offers a spectacular view of the Gulf of Policastro. (Translated by Google) The tower is not freely accessible, as unfortunately stated in previous reviews. It's located on private property that can only be opened after prior notification to the municipality, which would then have to notify the owner. The owner, however, welcomed us kindly, expressing her regret for the mix-up and inviting us to return. In any case, the structure appears very well-maintained: the tower is nestled in an idyllic garden, the polar opposite of its counterpart in Scalea. And be warned: the owner doesn't like it being called Crawford! Misleading place, dishonest staff, and bland food. We ordered the octopus, which on the menu said was served with cicoria and crusco peppers. However, when we got it, we just received a tiny octopus with lettuce and bad tomatoes. They didn’t even bother to remove the stem of the tomatoes. No cicoria and no peppers. We asked the server, and he was like “no, we didn’t have cicoria but we have crusco peppers. I can compensate and give you some crusco peppers as courtesy.” We agreed. To our surprise, they made us pay an extra 7 euros for the “courtesy peppers” they had offered us. Also, we had ordered the “calamarata” pasta with octopus sauce, and they never said they didn’t have it. But to our surprise, we received a completely different pasta shape with a mediocre octopus sauce. There was no clarity or honesty on behalf of the staff. Avoid this place.

Let's start with the location, excellent, sea view, very quiet... the prices for what we ate were reasonable, considering we also had a bottle of wine, we were about 45 per person. The food was excellent. The only flaw was that we had to wait a bit long, about 50 minutes for the appetizer and half an hour for the first courses, with the room full, but it seems a bit excessive to me. Overall, if you're not in a hurry, it's a place where you can stop without any worries. The staff was all very courteous and attentive, which always makes a difference. I will definitely return, perhaps at sunset, to enjoy the spectacular view even more. Highly recommended! Consigliatissimo!

(Translated by Google) I rarely find myself writing a review after dining, but this time I must. It was a fantastic discovery. This family-run restaurant immediately captivated us with its magnificent location, its pool overlooking the sea. The staff were kind and friendly, and the attention to detail was evident not only in their service but also in the food, which was very fresh and expertly prepared. The dishes were beautifully presented and unique, unlike the usual fare you'd find at a seafood restaurant. I highly recommend trying it. Excellent value for money.

Restaurant
Il Casale is a charming restaurant located in the center of San Nicola Arcella, offering a romantic terrace with beautiful views. The menu features traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist, and attentive service from the staff. Guests can enjoy delicious antipasto plates, eggplant parmigiana, and cod with oregano. The tagliata steak, served on a sizzling hot plate with rocket and parmesan, is particularly recommended.
Delicious. We had the tagliata steak on a sizzling hot plate with rocket and parmesan. The potatoes with rosemary which were super crispy and the veal steak with grilled eggplant and zucchini. All very good. A local family heard we were on our honeymoon 'Luna di miele' and offered us a glass of their local wine. What a special place.

Ordered the antipasto plate without meat and the eggplant parmigiana as well as the cod with oregano. The antipasto plate was delicious - a nice sampling of vegetables, cheeses, olives, potatoes and sundried tomatoes. The cod was not cooked enough and had to send it back. Upon return, the fish was better. Seating on the terrace with the tile tables and a beautiful view of the town, was lovely. This is a dependable restaurant with a great owner, Stefano.

We went here during our holiday as our friends had really good pizza during their first night. The service was extremely rude, the waiters didn’t pay any attention to our orders and it took five different visits to the table to even get our drinks straight. The waiter rolled her eyes to us when we asked for the missing drinks. I ordered pasta with cod, which was eatable, but not worth the 16€ price. My friends had pasta with shrimps which they couldn’t even eat. The shrimps seemed old and smelled weird. Would not recommend as a tourist, probably locals will get better service as the place was half full.

Great location and wonderful patio. The food was very good but the eggplant parmesan was amazing. Totally different than any I've ever had. Was cooked in a soup bowl, and was like a lasagna almost. It wasn't breaded, which was great for me, and it might be a bit too oily for some, but I loved it. Great for dipping your bread into! House wine was good and the service was attentive.

I hate this food, I waited for my white wine glass for 40minutes

The pizza was deliciously amazing! but the service wasn’t soo good as the food. We had to wait quite long time to make our order, the water we ordered was missing and the wine came straight to the table without being served by the waitress. She was sooo distracted chatting with some friends maybe? The Tiramisu we ordered to share came with only one spoon. Even tho we were clear that we wanted to share it! I can’t imagine in the middle of the season because the restaurant wasn’t busy at all!

Disco club
The location of Il Clubbino del Cancarieddru is stunning, offering a breathtaking sunset for a remarkable aperitivo experience with average cocktails. The subsequent seafood dinner is also average but accompanied by a good selection of wines. It comes highly recommended, particularly for the aperitivo. This club stands out in the province, exuding elegance and playing excellent music while maintaining high standards. The ambiance is enhanced by nice tunes and an impressive view.
Beautiful place, good music lots of fun! Bartender Chris doing best drinks! Highly recommend!

(Translated by Google) I can only review the nightclub. Very nice location and young crowd. Pretty good music. It has a very small dance floor with a DJ and another one on the restaurant side. Overall, it's very nice, but paying €25 without even a drink is a real rip-off. I understand that there's not much else in the area, but that certainly doesn't justify this price. (Original) Posso recensire la sola discoteca. Location molto bella e pubblico giovanile. Musica abbastanza buona.

(Translated by Google) I went for dinner with friends, and we had an appetizer, two entrees, and a mixed grill. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was lovely; service was a little slow due to the small number of people in the room. The place is beautiful, and the lady who runs it took us on a tour of the entire garden and interior.
