Whitehaven Marina Ltd

4.4

Marina
Whitehaven Marina Ltd is a charming waterfront destination with a variety of rental apartments and holiday cottages that offer breathtaking views of the marina and the Irish Sea. The area features an array of restaurants, bars, and historical attractions such as the Beacon Museum, which hosts regular exhibitions and local history information. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along two piers and a circular route, taking in the picturesque harbor filled with boats and yachts.
Even nice on a gloomy day such as today. A spacious picturesque marina with all kinds of craft. What looks like a military fort on one side turns out to be a mine which runs 4 miles beneath the sea. An incredible engineering feat. There is a really fantastic museum and cafe. Great to walk around the old harbour walls where there are many information displays about the harbour history.

A lot of history around the harbour. Always something going on. A good walk around. 👍

Great harbour to walk around different routes to take. Statues of the miners and informative lettering on the benches around and on the ground. A reminder of the terrible reminders of a tough working town. Great coastal walk also. The people all very friendly very happy to stop for a chat. Great area to explore. 😊👌

Quite nice marina but nothing much else in Whitehaven other than The Rum & Jefferson museum which is worth visiting.

It was wonderful to see the galeon and the food stalls. We had a good day out and the town is a good place to visit.

The Harbour Master Coffee House and Bar is a charming establishment located in Whitehaven's historic harbor, with a rich history dating back to the 17th century. The cafe offers a delightful menu featuring delicious bacon sandwiches, ham and cheese toasties, and even crisp butties at reasonable prices. The friendly service and attention to detail create a welcoming atmosphere for both locals and visitors alike.
A quaint and chic cafe/pub with awesome decor and a nice atmosphere. I only stopped for a coffee, but I could have sat here for hours and watched the boats in the harbour and the world go by. You can sit inside or outside with plenty of tables and chairs. The coffee was also very nice.

This is my partner's favourite place for a drink whilst I go shopping. I usually join him later before we return home. Always feel welcome, great atmosphere and good service.

A little gem that we stumbled on by accident. Dog friendly. Lovely food. Staff were wonderful.... so friendly. And where else could you get a crisp sandwich ?!
Nets L — Google review
Edit: Thursday 9th November 2023: Still excellent. AND their toilet paper is QUALITY! Edit: Tuesday 8pm (20:00) Guinness and bacon butty, ideal. Lovely staff and great service, level access and outdoor seating may well suit wheelchair users. Dog friendly, and with fitting and interesting decor (pointing towards some of the history of Whitehaven / it's harbour with it's links to Ireland), Excellent views across the harbour, level access, nice food, selection of beers (Guinness, Stella, others), better hot chocolate than Greggs or McDonalds, also their lemonade on tap and cordial are both ok for those like me who cannot stand the taste of Aspartame, a snacks menu for people and a snacks menu for dogs (waterbowl for dogs outside near the entrance). Has tables and seating inside and out front on the harbour most of the day / early evening. A lovely place to watch the sunset. And they have a pub quiz 3rd Wednesday of the month. And they sell bacon butties. And their own-branded Spirit (available in bottles) is quite a tasty warmer-upper... And they stock XL Cheese crisps, locally very popular and with good reason. Photos are from five different visits.

Love this place. Friendly staff, great prices, excellent views and dog friendly. We love to stop here for a bite to eat and a few drinks after a walk around the harbour. Always a lovely atmosphere here, giving a nice family feeling.

The Candlestick

Pub
The Candlestick in Whitehaven is a gem of a pub with first-class real ales served by knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. The pub is immaculate throughout, and the friendly regulars make everyone feel welcome. Visitors praise the great service, excellent drinks, and good value for money. The old-fashioned atmosphere and friendly patrons create a welcoming environment. Although there was no food available during one visit, the place was clean with tasteful decor.
Edit: Still the best real ale pub here imho. Edit: Sunday 2nd June 2024 Excellent beers and excellent service continues, definitely my favourite pub! Edit: Monday 12th Feb 2024 More excellent beers! Edit: Thursday 9th November 2023: As real ales go, I really enjoyed the "Wonky Donkey" = Still excellent! New information: As of today, 19th August 2023 they have proper bottles of proper Coca-Cola too! Nice pub, great location, good selection of beers all of which are well looked after, tidy interior, clean glasses, ok selection of crisps / nuts, excellent range of comfy seating, friendly staff, good clean toilets. Useful info: Level access (I expect likely wheelchair friendly.) Good layout (I expect likely wheelchair friendly) Less than 100 metres to defibrillator on the harbour to the north. Bus stop close by (easily less than 50 metres and level) Fish and chips, Pizza, Kebabs, Indian Food, Chinese Food, Fried Chicken, Taxi Rank all available within 100 metres or so.

Came for a drink to get out of the sun whilst attending Leyland 53 bus event we had a pint of alpacalypse which was chilled to perfection with a nice lavender aroma about it an even bigger bonus was the fact the pub had a great atmosphere shall return when in Whitehaven in the future it's also reasonably priced

Tapas bar
Anna's Bar & Kitchen received a mixed review. The initial impression was underwhelming, as the staff seemed uncertain and inexperienced. The first cup of coffee was unclean, and the milk jug appeared to have never been washed since its purchase. However, despite a small wait for the food, it proved to be worth it. The breakfast was skillfully prepared and satisfying, especially considering its affordable price point.
Amazing atmosphere with great food. Perfect location on the doorsteps to marina. No wonder why this place is always busy.

We visited here yesterday. My husband had pulled pork and I had fish and chips. The food was excellent, very tasty, good portion sizes and the prices weren't OTT. The setting of the restaurant overlooking Whitehaven harbour is beautiful, a nice place to enjoy a drink is the terrace outside. The only negative about this was there were people smoking on the terrace. As it's private property, why not ban smoking on the terrace so everyone can enjoy their food and drink without someone spoiling it? But like I said, beautiful food, beautiful setting and efficient service.

Popular place opposite the marina in Whitehaven. Not been in before as it’s always busy! A table on the terrace was free today, probably one of the hottest days of the year and many people sat outside with cocktails, it all looked good. The food is tasty and we all enjoyed our choices sat out in the sunshine - menu offers a good range of small plates, burgers, ‘dirty fries’, salads etc. inside was cool and air conditioned, but they were fully booked, outside had just one table, but for being busy there was a great atmosphere. Drinks took a while, but it didn’t take very long for food to arrive after placing our order and the staff were friendly, but it’s clear they are all run off their feet and dirty dishes are left lying on tables (for much longer than they should be) After our order was delivered we weren’t asked if food was ok, or if we needed anything else, so sadly they lost a star from me for this omission, but on a quieter day I’d probably give this place 5 stars all round. It was good. Tasty food, good menu & nice atmosphere.

Only came for drinks as we had planned to have fish and chips elsewhere. The menu looked lovely though so we will be back at some point to try! We went about 4:30 and sat outside in the September sunshine. Lovely views of the harbour. Inside there was plenty space as still early. I had a pineapple crush mocktail which was nice.

Outstanding Fish and chips which we all chose. No photos because we all dived into them right away. Best fish and chips for a long time for all of us. Good brew too. On a Tuesday so a bit quiet
Christine B — Google review
Great tapas food and restaurant is in good location at the harbour front. Service could be improved; slow food arrival, we had to ask twice (!) for plates, and nobody cleared our table despite being plenty of staff walking past...
Nathan C — Google review
We were in the area, needed a place to eat, but also to accommodate dogs and a celiac... They did both... Got a booking immediately. The food was just amazing. The service was top notch. They're definitely a place that will tantalize a return as there was so much on the menu that I wanted. It's extensive, affordable and very very tasty. I can't wait till I'm up that part of Cumbria again as I will be returning. If your passing this spot. Don't hesitate. You won't be disappointed.
Mr D — Google review
Our first time at Anna's and we decided to indulge. Cocktails to start then two three-plate tapas with the meal deal and plenty of wine. We had some chips on the side too. The drinks and food were absolutely delicious and just the right quantity. There was a little left over but not too much to consider a waste. The service was less good. We waited a long time to be served and seemed a little forgotten by staff at times. Nevertheless the staff were friendly and it has to be allowed that it was a busy Saturday night. Be aware this is a trendy place with plenty of young adults dressed to the nines. This means the music is a bit too loud and the atmosphere can get just a touch raucous. It's not a place for an intimate romantic meal. It is bang on if you're a party of several though - or just young! Price was a little high. Not much change out of £100 for a meal for two. We did splash out though. I would happily do it again for the tapas. Best I've had for a long while.

Restaurant
I recently dined at Akash Tandoori Restaurant, an Indian eatery, and was eager to provide a review. The food exceeded my expectations with its delectable flavors. The Poppadoms were perfectly crispy, and the naan bread was of good quality. Furthermore, the service received an exceptional rating as the staff members were faultless in their attentiveness and friendliness.
Was in the area for a walk in the lakes, highly recommend this place. Good service and amazing food. Would recommend the Lamb Rogan, was plenty of meat 👌

This place is a hidden gem, like the curry house that time forgot! It's as if it was frozen in the late 90s, the decor needs a refresh and the staff lack finesse, even the menu is old school. But! It's great! Sometimes it's nice to open a menu and recognise everything on it. It's even better to order classic dishes and find that they taste better than you remember! It's tired, sure, but we've been twice now and had a cracking curry at a sensible price. I'll happily go again too next time I'm in Whitehaven I would also mention that our most recent visit was on a busy Saturday night. One table was particularly obnoxious and rude to the staff. The lads looked of the age to have visited curry houses in the 90s but unfortunately their manners remain stuck in time and have definitely not improved with age. The staff dealt with them with patience and managed to tread that narrow line of appeasement without getting walked all over. Well done the staff Wish I'd taken better pics, will try on my next visit

The food was extremely tasty. The selection was great. Prices sooo reasonable. The location is fantastic, right by the harbour, near the train station, etc. Walking distance to all the pubs and hotels. The bathrooms were good quality. The service was extremely on point and friendly. The venue was very pleasant with a great atmosphere. Heavily recommend this place for sure.

We were staying in St Bees, so decided to visit for dinner on a Sunday night. We were surprised at how busy it was, so were not sure we would get a table with no booking but the staff managed to fit us in. We were lucky they did as the food was incredible! Every dish exceeded expectations and the portions were very generous. 10/10 on every element, food, service, atmosphere etc! Just wish we lived closer so we could visit again!

The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven is a captivating destination, especially on a rainy day. It offers an immersive journey through the history of West Cumbria, from early Roman settlers to the industrial revolution and the impact of the nuclear industry on the local economy. Housed in a stunning Georgian building, it features diverse exhibits including local history, archaeology, art, and even a Titanic exhibition. The museum also provides hands-on displays for children and boasts a restaurant with great views from its balcony.
Visited mid-week in July. This is a really nice museum to look around. Really nicely laid out. Start on the top floor and work your way down (and back) in history. The views of the harbour and beyond really stunning. Plenty of artifacts and exhibitions - there is plenty to learn about Whitehaven and the surrounding area with a large area dedicated to Sellafields. I spent about 2 hours here - probably could have spent longer if I had more time.
Alex L — Google review
Very welcoming reception, very informative Great interactive displays and building bricks in the Sellafield exhibition. Can't comment on anything else as we have been here for an hour and my 5yo son doesn't want to leave 😂 Managed to get to the other floors finally, great interactive exhibitions on all levels. A good way to spend 2 to 3 hours
Martin W — Google review
Went to see their Percy Kelly exhibition - absolutely brilliant- like a love letter to the artist. Exhibition was on the top floor with views across Whitehaven harbour. They have exhibitions on the local history, mining, people and fossils. Romans and sellafield nuclear plant. Happily spent an hour here. They have toilets, gift shop and lift to all floors. Don't think their cafe was opened when I was there. Highly recommend visiting, think prices are around £7 each or £18 for an annual card and the young lady at reception is to their credit, very friendly with a warm welcome. Highly recommend a visit here.

Amazing museum. Loved the Titanic exhibition. Ran out of time though, so recommend you give yourself a good few hours to see it all. The interactive elements were fab, and we had lots of fun.

We visited this museum as a family of four during the summer holidays. We were met at reception by friendly smiling staff. The whole museum had many interactive activities for young and older children alike which was great for our 8 year old, keeping him thoroughly entertained throughout as well as being enjoyable for my 16 year old daughter. We had a great time at the Beacon museum!

Great titanic exhibition, lots of things for the kids to play with including a free VR mine trip, A video tour of Sellafield nuclear reactor along with information and history of nuclear, Great views from the top with free industrial binoculars! Only a few minor broken exhibits but overall in great condition, They give you a wristband that allows you to come and go during the day, we spent two hours in here but to fully experience the exhibits expect to spend nearly a day in here it is pretty cool!

We spent there 2hrs and loved it. 4 floors filled with many interesting topics, things to try, read and explore. We were fortunate to see Medieval Medicine exhibition which was fantastic 😀 Lovely cafe and a gift shop, great staff and amazing views from the balcony. There is a pay and display car park.

Wellington pit was built in the form of a castle, with a great keep, turrets and enormous crenellated walls. Its twin shafts were sunk between 1840 and 1845. The architect of the surface buildings was Sydney Smirke. The design of the ‘candlestick chimney’ is reputed to be based on a candlestick in the Castle. The only remaining buildings are the candlestick chimney, which is now used as ventilation for the workings, and the Wellington Lodge.

Whitehaven Harbour is a charming area with a lot to offer. The 18th-century lighthouses have been recently restored, adding to the historical charm of the place. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks and explore various bars and eateries along the harbourside. Stella the Seal has become a beloved attraction in the area, but visitors are advised to keep dogs and loud children away from her so as not to frighten her.
The area is calm and serene, with gentle waves and scenic views that make it perfect for a relaxing day out. Whether you’re strolling along the shore or just sitting by the water, the atmosphere is truly refreshing. A lovely spot to unwind and soak in the tranquility.

The Rum Story & Jefferson's Shop is a captivating tourist attraction that recreates an 18th-century Caribbean island town. Visitors can explore the maritime, industrial, and social history of this intriguing town, which includes exhibits on slavery and rainforests. The attraction showcases the mining and shipbuilding legacy of the town, as well as its connections to America and the world of slavery.
Wow, what an adventure at The Rum Story! This museum is cleverly designed as a walking journey through rum's fascinating history—it really feels like you're part of a living tale. Every corner revealed more captivating stories from the rainforest to our present day—I could hardly believe how much fun learning about rum could be! And let's not forget about the friendly staff—they are like walking encyclopedias with personality; their passion for rum is contagious! At the end of it all, enjoying some delicious samples made my visit even sweeter (pun intended!). "I Love The Rum Story" (or is that subliminal messaging from the signs I read?)
David M — Google review
Fascinating and thought provoking museum which needs more promotion. All about the Jefferson family, rum and the slave trade. Not a huge museum but packed with interesting artifacts and information. Fully accessible to the three floors for wheelchair users. Small gift shop and a cafe attached for light meals and drinks. Rum and drink shop for adults.
Helen W — Google review
A wonderful museum dedicated to Rum, the museum is wheelchair friendly and has accessible WC. There is a cafe and gift shop on site. Parking is on the main street. The museum is set off the high street, and it's the actual building that was used to make Jefferson's Rum. The building is old and has a lot of character. There are some areas that make us a bit claustrophobic, and it can get a bit warm and stuffy inside. There are a lot of reading materials giving insight into Whitehaven's dark rum history, which is quite fascinating and quite terrible at the same time. Don't forget to check out the gift store and also the main shop off the high street. The rum raisin chocolate fudge looks great with different selections of rum to buy and sample. It's worth a visit if you're in Whitehaven.

Last entry is at 3pm and place closes at 4pm. Lovely staff and must visit place if you interested to know and learn facts about rum making and history. Amazon forest theme was nice for photography. This place is on the high street and might require more money to run the place. It’s kind of quiet and the profit are given to local harbour for development. They also have varieties of rum you can buy.
Pradeepkumar R — Google review
Must go to place for anyone that is a fan of rum. It takes you on a journey from the rain forest, making of rum, how rum came to Britain, history of rum in the navy and few other bits. Two adult tickets were less then £20 and we got a coupon for £5 off a large bottle of rum. After the museum we went into the gift shop. Spent at least an hour talking to the lovely lady in the shop even gave us free rum samples (samples meant to cost £1, PRICE OF SAMPLE TAKEN OFF PRICE OF FULL BOTTLE IF YOU PURCHASED IT) I spent about £90 in the shop 3 medium bottles of rum and rum chocolates box. Fully recommend it for anyone in lakes.

Hands down the best museum I've ever visited! It's tucked away down a random street but it's so in depth and well decorated it's worth it. I'd try and go there every time I'm in or near the Lake District

Interesting museum talking about the story of one rum making family. Excellent staff and made to feel very welcome.

Sandwich shop
Subway is a popular casual counter-serve chain known for its customizable sandwiches and salads, offering health-conscious options. Customers appreciate the excellent staff, accurate orders, and reasonable prices. The loyalty program allows patrons to earn points for free items. The menu caters to both healthy and indulgent choices, with some praising the vegan wrap and meatball marinara. While some have experienced issues with delivery temperature, others enjoy the friendly staff who are accommodating with sandwich modifications.
My sandwich (ham, cheese, peppers, tomato and ketchup) is never a problem and it is always delicious

Really tasty sandwiches. Quick service. Quite busy. Fresh ingredients.

Definitely recommend the vegan wrap! Can't wait to see more vegan options going up. The staff are so lovely and polite, and always offer to change their gloves whenever I order! Thanks everyone!

Love subway, has great choice, and I love the coffee here. The prices are very reasonable, and best of all, you get a points card or you can use the app to build them up and get free stuff. I recently used some of mine to get a free snack, I had the meatballs which are lovely. Can cater to both healthier options or just full on pigging out! Would recommend.

First of all, my experience at subway started with a warm welcome from the a staff with a polite "hello" which made me feel warm inside and wanted. After this I had no problem with ordering as the staff made it very easy to order once I told them I had dyslexia they told me exactly what to do so I had no trouble with that. After this I was not dissapointed with the standed of the warm food and the ice cold pepi cola. The seats were nice as so we're the pretty pictures of salami on the wall. It realy gave me good toasty italian vibe. So overall I would recommend for a quick bite to eat or a relaxed chat with friends:)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this place, no where to add any blank stars. The staff are excellent, the food is great and they always get my order correct. Never had a problem with this place.

Came to whitehaven subway after an unpleasant experience at cockermouth roundabout subway (spar) we told the lady, Pauline about the manner of the previous girl, Pauline was lovely, happy and everything was done with a smile, she then came over to our table while we were eating and said 'I don't want your family going home sad after your last experience' and have us a couple of cookies and a muffin, she was lovely definitely will be back, manners definitely cost nothing x

Food is what it is thats why its getting 2 stars would only be 1. The staff are miserable in the whitehaven shop, always huffing and puffing when asking for stuff and very rude on a number of occasions this has been the case. Wont be back to this particular store.

Cocktail bar
La Venue is a charming cocktail bar in Whitehaven that offers delicious food and fabulous drinks. The staff goes above and beyond to provide excellent service, ensuring a great evening for visitors. The cocktails are not only fantastic but also delicious, and the staff is known for being very helpful and friendly. Social distancing measures are well maintained, providing a safe environment for patrons.
The manager who was on last night went above and beyond to help us after a glitch in the online booking system. All the staff were lovely and looked after us. The cocktails looked fantastic. Anybody worried about social distancing that was well maintained. Will definitely return again when back in Whitehaven.

Lovely venue, food was delicious and drinks were fab. Had a great evening with good service and will definitely return. The loss of a star was simply for the small portion of prawns. I felt for the price there should have been slightly more, or larger prawns.

Fabulous little bistro with an excellent range of tapas and cocktails. Really good atmosphere and the staff were friendly and efficient. Great place for a get together with friends in an evening. Prices seemed very reasonable. Will definitely revisit.

A really good café during the day (I've never been in the evening when it becomes a bar). They have a great selection of food and some really interesting selections. The breakfasts are all very good too. They do gluten and dairy free options which is always great to see in a local café. They do delivery to local businesses and catering as well at a decent price for good food. Would definitely recommend!
Zoe T — Google review
Service was good but food was average at best, not sure if it’s the air conditioning or it came out that way but food was cold when working our way through the dishes and the meatballs were sent back as they were freezing in the middle. Sharing Portion sizes were ok although 2 satay chicken skewers for nearly £7 was scandalous and desserts were fine although very limited options. . Service was okay although nothing special and cocktails were good although a little pricey,, truthfully I personally preferred flavours in Workington and found the dishes quite plain and bland. Probably wouldn’t use again as just didn’t find the food justied the cost.

Called and fitted us in as last minute booking. Called me back 5 mins later to say we could come 30 mins earlier as originally requested earlier time. Food superb. Got 3 sharing plates between 2 of us and was brill Chilli beef nachos was the best dish as they were homemade nachos. Meatballs could also tell they were homemade and breaded chicken was tasty! Attentive staff

£47 for tapas and one drink each for two people. Tiny portions. I ordered a cocktail with kin vodka (my favourite), which arrived WAY too strong on vodka. When I told the waitress, she said "well it IS alcohol"-so patronising. And I still had to pay £7 for it.

Restaurant
Nestled along the picturesque Harbour Front, Zest Harbourside is a modern British eatery that embodies a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. After exploring the stunning Lake District, this charming café offers the perfect respite with its unpretentious menu that highlights local Cumbrian produce. With an impressive selection of gluten-free options, it caters to various dietary needs without compromising on flavor or quality.
Absolutely excellent restaurant. The food is great, the service was excellent and it has a very pleasant atmosphere. We turned up without a reservation and were easily accommodated. Nothing seemed to be too much. I can recommend the mushrooms on toast starter and the fish and chips. I also have it on my husband's authority the squid starter is excellent.
Jamie T — Google review
We were visiting the area and found on top restaurants in the area. Overall an amazing quality meal but with a point of improvement. The only thing that really let the experience down was the portion sizes were massive. They would have been better reducing the prices and portion sizes slightly and I feel they would sell more desserts therefore still making money. We walked in having no booking and they seated us at a stool area which was fine. Nice to have the breeze from the door on a hot day and watch people coming and going from the restaurant which had a constant busy flow of customers who were mainly local which suggests how good it is. We ordered mango chicken and the onion bombs as starters to share between 3 of us. Both incredible and very tasty. The mains we had were sausage and mash, spicy meatball pasta and the harbour side wok chicken. No complaints from anyone in the party except the portion sizes were too big. The service was excellent. All staff looked happy and friendly and wanted to help you in any way they could. It was nice to see them clearly enjoying working together which meant the atmosphere was really positive and friendly place to be. Its places like this that really need to be supported to stay open in difficult times for businesses as this place is a real gem despite it not really looking like much from the outside. The interior and decor was modern and clean, and they have clearly put a lot of time and effort into the restaurant recently as service was slick and professional whilst remaining friendly and homely. Definitely give this place a try if visiting the area. Make sure your belly is empty!!

Absolutely incredible! I was staying the weekend in Whitehaven and went to this wonderful place. First time there I had sweet potato fries, cheesy mash and chili garlic bread. All of it was lovely but the chili garlic bread was absolutely heavenly. The second day I had the meatball pasta with mozzarella and omg, best meatballs I've ever had. Staff there are lovely, beautiful window seat view, food is decently priced compared to others in the area, not the most impressive decor but they make up for it in food presentation and taste. Absolutely give this place a go!

After a long day travelling around the Lake District, we needed to rest and eat. We'd had a lovely walk around the harbour and saw Zest Harbourside. I'd already noticed they had gluten-free options, and as I'm gluten intolerant, I was happy to see they had some really good choices. We asked if our dogs were allowed, and they were so welcoming. The dogs were given biscuits and a bowl of water. Perfect! The food was amazing, and all of the staff were helpful, friendly, and attentive. It's so nice to find gluten-free and dog friendly with fab food. Definitely recommend.

Always one of our first choices… My partner and I have been to Zest many times over the last few years and have never been disappointed! Last night’s visit was no different, the only difference was that we were out as a family instead of just the two of us. We had our table booked and got a big table quite close to the bar which was handy when we needed anything, our server was a gentleman with red hair - I never caught his name but he was brilliant, he gave us plenty of laughs and great service all round. For food, I usually go for the ZFC (Zest Fried Chicken) with fries and gravy but tonight I fancied a change… We all had starters which came quickly, I had the pork belly skewers from the specials menu which was divine - please add this as a permanent dish! For mains, I had the bread bowl with assorted butters and the sticky sausages - the bread was delicious as ever (this is my usual starter) and the sausages were good too but boy were they hot! The little metal dish they come in keep them absolutely piping hot for the entirety of the meal so be careful if you have them. Overall, another brilliant visit to Zest and we’ll definitely be back again soon!

The Gaiety Cinema is a historic and popular attraction for movie lovers, offering a vintage cinema experience with a wide range of snacks and beverages. It features the latest blockbusters during the summer months. The auditorium is clean with comfortable seating, and there's an option to purchase tickets online or at the door. Visitors appreciate the warm atmosphere, affordable prices for entry, and friendly staff.
Hadn't been to The Gaiety since 1999, when I was a kid growing up in West Cumbria. Absolutely love old cinemas so have been meaning to visit when I'm back visiting family for a long time. Fabulous cinema, very comfortable given the fact it isn't a brand new place by any stretch of the imagination. Bargain price (£7.00 booked online) and £5.50 for a large popcorn and fizzy drinks - exceptional value when compared to my local cinema back home in Sheffield. Will try to make a visit a regular thing when I'm in the area.

Watched Furiosa - A Mad Max Saga this afternoon at this Cinema. Tickets cost £5.75. Good selection of sweets and snacks available at very good prices so you don’t need to bring your own. There’s also a bar. Auditorium itself was clean and seats were comfortable. Go for row G if you prefer a little more legroom. I love visiting the cinema whenever I can and always prefer the smaller independent traditional cinemas (like this one) over the big chains.

The Solway Hall is a fantastic venue that offers great value for weddings and events. Guests had an amazing time with reasonably priced drinks, excellent food, and friendly staff. The bar is known for its reasonable prices and efficient service. It's wonderful to see the hall open again, with lovely and helpful staff creating a pleasant experience for guests. This venue is highly praised for its great atmosphere, friendly staff, and overall enjoyable experience.
What a amazing place for a wedding had ours here over the weekend and nothing g was too much, the venue was very reasonable priced, the drink were very cheap and everyone had a great time. Everything was sorted by solway hall and the place looked amazing they change that room in to a palace, want certain drinks just ask, certain timings just ask, leave the dress so the bride can go get more drunk no bother, every singer guessed did not expect how the place would look and everyone mentioned how great it is. 10/10 would recommend.
Daniel W — Google review
First time I went to see a show at the Solway Hall, the band were great. The staff were all very friendly, prices at the bar are reasonable and they have a large selection. The seating however was horrendous, small upright desk chairs squashed up against each other. No shoulder room, I'm not a large person but the larger people, (that seems to be the norm nowadays) had terrible trouble trying to sit. They could not sit back as there was no room for shoulders. Unlike any theatre or cinema that has arm rests so you get that small gap between seats, here there was nothing. By the time a person sat either side, it was almost comical to see someone try and fit in the space left. What made it worse it is July and very hot, it had been raining so most had coats, no fresh air in there, the people in front of us had to leave at the interval they said it was too hot and crammed in like Sardines. It may be a good venue for other events but as a seated concert it's awful. It made Rosehill Theatre and Carnegie seem massive. I would never go back again.
Mark C — Google review
Absolutely devastated had to leave after 30 minutes couldn't stand anymore as was in too much pain. Was told there would be seats for us and only warned if you leave your seat you lose it. Never was told all the seats were a free for all and hard bloody cheese. Totally ruined the night no respect for anyone with health problems. Singer was great just sad only got to see around 4 songs half of which I cried in pain then left. Your service at this place is small minded and discriminative....same on you.

Dropped in when in town and was thrilled. The staff were really lovely and happy to play games with the children (I had a four year old and 10 month old with me) if the parent was occupied. The upstairs was being used for casting but that was still accessible and a good use of space. Free for under 1s but plenty for him to do and although my four year old is used to climbing frames and a larger play gym he still found it entertaining. Really clean and the changing facilities were excellent - with free nappies, wipes, cream and nappy sacks available so you don’t even need to remember everything! Highly recommend.

I went to The Yellow Earl for drinks after a satisfying dinner in town on a Saturday night. It was quite busy but not overwhelmingly so, with people enjoying themselves without being rowdy. The staff were extremely efficient at serving drinks, and I appreciated the appealing decor and overall ambiance of the place. However, there was one peculiar feature: their snug area was more like a sensory room, enclosed by a massive impenetrable door that seemed rather restrictive.
Went in for a quick dinner and couldn’t be happier. The food was outstanding, I got a turkey Yorkshire pudding wrap with roasties and it was delicious. Service was brilliant from start to finish, got seated and served in no time. Excellent staff and great atmosphere. Would highly recommend if anyone is thinking about it or passing by.

Had a works party with 11 of us for the bottomless brunch. All food came out at the same time, no one was waiting & it was absolutely delicious. The staff made sure we were topped up with drinks for the full 90 minutes & were very accommodating ☺️

Oh. My. God! This place is amazing. Me and my partner ordered of Uber eats and we waited a whole hour with no show (absolutely not the yellow earls fault). The lady on the phone at the Yellow Earl told us half an hour in they were concerned about the driver not arriving and we told them that we would wait. They called half an hour after that and offered to drive all the way (we are half an hour from the restaurant) to deliver their food. Not only that they had remade the food as it had gotten cold from the wait of the Uber eats driver. This shows their dedication as a lot of places would just cancel the order. NOT ONLY THAT!!!-> but when the food actually arrived… oh my god!!! The food. The delicious food I haven’t had food like that in a long long time it was absolutely delicious. Everything about it. My partner had the Italian pizza and salad and I had the pulled beef bao buns and the squid sticks and (need I say again) oh. My. god! I felt like I was in heaven. If I could give this place a 10 stars I would. Me and my partner will definitely be coming to this place first hand very soon! Thank you everyone at The Yellow Earl

Held a hen party at the Yellow Earl on Saturday. They accommodated all my requests from buffet order, outside entertainment & Prosecco for arrival drinks. The bar staff went above and beyond helping to setup when we initially arrived, they even provided table service throughout the afternoon. The buffet was excellent & was more than enough to cater for all the guests. We had the whole place to ourselves and it was a truly brilliant evening. I’d highly recommend.

Came here for drinks after a good dinner in town on a Saturday evening. The place was busy but not too busy. People were having fun but not raucous. Staff were super efficient at getting drinks. I liked the decor and general atmosphere. They have the weirdest snug ever though! More like a sensory room but with a huge thick door you can't move and probably wouldn't want to. You'd be entombed forever... May sound strange but the toilets definitely had an 'oh wow' about them. Loved the beer barrel urinals and the record collection outside!
Ken P — Google review
I did have a good experience my first time visiting this place. The vibes are usually there. My most recent visit, the place was oddly dead, and I came to pickup an order for takeaway. I hate to say it, but the food was dry and the portions felt tiny for the price. A few bits were missing from the order, especially for the dessert which would have helped it feel a bit more worth it and a bit less dry, but I chose to not make a fuss as I'm British and I didn't feel like travelling back. Overall the food was a letdown, and I don't think I'll be trying The Yellow Earl again for a while. I think the business switched hands not too long ago, which might explain the huge difference I feel has been made in the food quality, but I could be wrong.

Cleaver's Wine & Dine is a charming spot that offers a variety of dining experiences, from steak and seafood to afternoon tea. The ambiance is warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to enjoy quiz nights or simply unwind with a drink from the full bar. Guests have praised the delicious meals, such as the Cumberland Sausage and Classic burger, both of which were described as lovely and generously portioned. The White Chocolate and raspberry tart was also highly recommended for dessert.
Absolutely amazing food. I had Asian chicken thighs mrs had scotch egg. Then I had duck 🤤 Mrs had the burger and omg. This had to go up before pudding but I expect the best and I'm shore I will get it.

"Absolutely amazing"... the steak is the nicest ive ever tasted cooked to perfection and there was 4 , We all had them cooked different, 1 had half a roast chicken which was also faultless the service was 10/10, lovely warm atmosphere We couldn't fault anything we will definitely be back, thank you so much Helen Richard and staff ❤ xx

Lovely place to fall in to off the train and out of the rain for a late lunch. Really friendly and welcoming. I had white bait and then mussels, which was huge! I never fail to finish food but had to admit defeat and didn't need to eat again for the rest of the day. Well equipped loo and what looked like delicious cocktails Highly recommend

We nipped in here on a Saturday afternoon on the off chance of getting a table for lunch, thankfully they managed to fit us in. My husband had the Cumberland Sausage off the lunch menu and I had the Classic burger off the main menu. Both meals were lovely and a good size, with the wait time being average for a busy Saturday. We finished off by sharing a White Chocolate and raspberry tart, which again was really nice. We had 2 large glasses of wine & lemonade, 2 x pints of lager, 2 x meals and 1 x desert and it came to £54 ish. Which we thought was good value for the quality of food.

Fish and chips takeaway
Fast food restaurant
Fraser's, a fish and chips takeaway, receives a highly positive rating of 4 stars for its friendly staff, tidy and clean atmosphere, and reasonable prices. The fish and chips are described as having a great taste with a wonderful golden fry color. Although there are some downsides such as small and outdated toilets, the overall facility is well-maintained. The outside seating area could benefit from more space to accommodate the queueing customers.
Lovely chippy with a large menu, sweet and sour chicken balls and chips were delicious, fish bites were huge and tasty too! Kind staff (Danielle!)! Definitely recommend and will come back again.
Nick S — Google review
Loved this place when it was Crosbys, then Frasers took it over the food was still really good. Came here for a takeaway whilst visiting the area and sadly disappointed with it now. The cheese rissole was like a brick and the chips so mushy you couldn't pick them up with a fork 😔. The battered sausage was lovely. On the flip side the staff are lovely.
Jen S — Google review
Chips were decent enough, batter on haddock was apparently nice. The real letdown was the pie and the customer service. Felt like it was being ran by kids. I ordered a pie, about 4 mins later I heard screeching laughter from the back, and two of the young servers came rushing out with the pie upside down on a piece of grease paper. They were laughing about how they were handling the food and keeping it upside down. They then shot it in the heater, before putting in the box still upside down and putting the chips in. As predicted when I eventually opened the box to eat it a lot of the contents of the pie had spilled out of it and had leaked. I found the whole exchange very immature and if I’m being honest a tad disrespectful. They were laughing about it so they must’ve knew it was wrong thing to do, and they knew I could hear and see them…. Pie was just microwaved and quite stale. And the contents leaking out of it didn’t help with the taste.
Mia — Google review
I’m absolutely appalled by the treatment I received at this fish and chips restaurant. I was shocked and deeply hurt to experience clear racial discrimination during my visit. From the moment we walked in, the staff were cold and dismissive. When placing our order, we were refused certain menu items without explanation, while other customers were freely being served the same dishes. To make matters worse, we were told we’d have to pay extra just to sit and eat inside — something we noticed wasn’t being enforced for other (non-ethnic) customers around us. The entire experience was humiliating and unacceptable. In 2025, it’s sickening that businesses like this still treat people differently based on race or ethnicity. If you value basic human decency, I strongly urge you to take your business elsewhere. No one should have to pay for food and face prejudice.
Meerab N — Google review
I will rate this place 4 stars as is very friendly staff place looks very tidy and clean and very good price the fish and chips great taste and wonderful golden fry colour I wish I can go again but looks like a near future Down side well I record the facility as the whole place is done but the toilets are very small and out of date. And the tables out side I think it need more space as easy can get overwhelming by people doing the queue to get in other ways will be a perfect place. Do I recommend well no to the locals as they already know is a good place to dine in but if you are visiting well do check out you will be no disappointed but check the opening hours ..

Good quality fish, chips and side dishes. Value side dishes. Friendly staff.
Nigel P — Google review
A decent fish and chip shop. The fish was delicious and the batter was perfectly light and crispy. IMO the chips and mushy peas were bland. I would've liked more salt and vinegar too but they were wrapped before I was given the option... Since when do fish & chip shops not ask/allow you to put on some salt and vinegar!! My main issue was the price. Far too expensive! £23 for 2x fish & chips and 2x mushy peas!! I wouldn't mind as much if the portion was huge, but it was an average sized portion. Maybe they inflated the prices for the Jubilee Bank Holiday; regardless, £11.50 for fish & chips with mushy peas is extortionate!

The Georgian House Hotel is housed in a historic 18th-century building and boasts spacious and relaxed rooms. The establishment offers contemporary dining options, blending modernity with the charm of its landmark setting. While primarily a restaurant, some guests may find themselves needing to stay overnight due to unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, the staff's remarkable response is worth noting, as they are incredibly helpful and exceptionally competent.
Stayed here 2 days last week and 2 days this week for work. Great central location. Rooms are lovely and have a boutique feel to them. The staff are great. Very personal service. Special mention to Stephanie and Rita. Food is superb. Great breakfast, outstanding dinner and plenty of Gluten Free options.

Went for food for my daughters birthday and meal was terrible, starters were okay some better than others, steaks all come cooked incorrectly, waited 45 minutes to get seated which is the norm there but never got offered a single drink time we were there. We said we would pay but expressed our concerns, one said sorry and walked off to get a bill, then the lady from bar come to clear plates and when she asked if it was okay and we told her the concerns she actually laughed. Won’t be returning and over £220 for 4 steaks, few started and 2 alcoholic drinks and 2 cokes was definitely on the more expensive side.

We spent 2 nights here while traveling around the local areas and cannot recommend it enough. Rooms were exceptional and so clean. The breakfast was very good and prepared fresh for all guests. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful throughout the stay and our dinner on the second night. We liked the efficiency of dinner as we got to have a drink in the lounge and order then go downstairs to be seated at the table and eat!

Been using these facilities for most my life, always had a wonderful time visiting here. My Grandmother also said it was a wonderful place to work. It's not the biggest place but it has always been super fun for me. I've not been in a while but practicing in this place played a small part in developing myself as a much Footballer. Loved this place. Will revisit someday. Recommended.
Stadiume H — Google review
It's a place to train I suppose. The gym is an odd shape - long and narrow. This means that bros step over the bar, in front of you, right behind you etc etc when doing anything with a barbell. The bars are utter trash, with the bearings stiff in most of them. The discs are a mish-mash of brands and there's no order to them, with most strewn about the gym. There's also only a handful of full-sized discs. There's mirrors everywhere, and no way of squatting facing the other way if that's your preference. However, they've got a few decent machines. The leg press is great! And they've got the usual bro-specific stuff if you're hitting up some hypertrophy stuff. Weirdly, they have a decline bench but no incline bench. It's quite steep for drop-in sessions, however this seems to be the norm across the UK.

Playground
Castle Park, Playground is a charming park located in the town center and overlooked by Whitehaven Castle. It features a play area, playing fields, a bandstand, and a woodland area for leisurely walks. While the play area may require some maintenance, it offers an enjoyable experience for children. Visitors can also enjoy observing regular wildlife sightings such as Red Squirrels and Buzzards circling overhead. Additionally, parking is available across the road at Morrisons for up to two hours.
Used to play here as a kid. Feels amazing revisiting the area as an adult.

Big park. The play area is good but needs a wee bit of tlc. One swing needs oiled, and another is missing. You have to park over the road in Morrisons, so you only get 2 hours if you're in a car.

Gym is poor and over crowded at most times during the day. Changing rooms are filthy, showers are communal and dirty. Swimming has to be booked systems are poor for booking through. Not impressed and won’t be returning
Jon M — Google review
I would of left no stars, took my 1 yr old to the pool today booked online only to get there and changed to walk out and the baby pool to be closed. We had to take her into the shallow end of the big pool which was cold water, we had a swim about for half an hour to look at my daughter who was with her dad to find her shivering to the point her jaw was clenched n her arms were shaking. We had to get out before our time was up. The changing rooms are absolutely freezing and the floors are dangerously slippery especially for someone who has to carry a small child across them, i really think something needs to be done about the changing rooms put safer flooring down and heat them up also i think they should either put some heat into the big pool either that or tell people upon booking if the kids pool is going to be closed.

I took a 10 year old swimming and he wanted to go in the deep end. Instead of just saying he couldn’t one of the staff took the trouble to walk at the side of the pool and encouraged him all the way. I didn’t get his name and I think he was Australian. A credit to the team.
Shaun B — Google review
Typical Council pool, large pool at a reasonable temperature, small shallow kids pool available also. Gym on site with a number of machines available. Viewing area for swimming both pool side and near entrance.
Alex P — Google review
Whilst pool is good, and a decent size, there is no chance of going swimming before work. Doesnt open before 7am unless you're part of the swim team. Closes before 4pm on a Thursday, before 7pm on a Friday and before 2pm on a Saturday. It makes it almost impossible to work full time and commit to a regular swimming schedule every day. Gym is fairly basic, but works adequately.

The breakfasts at Morrisons Cafe are highly enjoyable. However, the rating could have been better if scrambled eggs had been consistently unavailable for the past few months. This place is excellent, with a friendly and helpful staff who always provide great service. The food served here is of good quality and can be savored by all patrons.
Friendly service and consistently good breakfasts here - and unlike a certain pub chain the beans are hot!

Cafe was very poor. Lady on the till was miserable. When asked if I could use Meerkat Meals it was a blatant NO. Don't understand why as I went on an eligible day. Majority of tables dirty. Chairs broken. Don't bother going if you want service with a smile.

Not good customer service , not been for a while because of it decided to try again . Won’t be returning unfortunately . Food took age to arrive given normal peas not mushy ran out peas for my friend replaced with beans without asking . No knifes . Given one sachet of sauce each . The fish was lovely

From being served to the food arriving took 1hr 15mins and some items were missing. We ordered 3 adult meals. It was endless. By the time it arrived, we were all overly hungry and grouchy especially my child. Can understand a 20-30min wait when busy but that was ridiculous. There were so many people unhappy.

Pub
Nestled in the charming village of Hensingham, The Globe Inn stands out as a traditional pub that welcomes families and furry friends alike. Known for its inviting atmosphere, it offers a delightful selection of homemade meals and desserts, including hearty Sunday dinners featuring turkey, lamb, pork, or chicken served from noon until late afternoon. While it may not serve food all day like some establishments, The Globe Inn is perfect for those looking to enjoy a drink in good company.
No food these days, but good selection of bar snacks including XL Cheese and the pints of Loweswater Gold are perfect, Usually another real ale is available. Service excellent. Nice crowd, like when I last drank in here in 2010. Prices very reasonable. Will drink & bar snack here again.

The waitress lady was extraordinary! Kind, helpful. In general, the whole staff we've seen or met with was nice, welcoming. The pub/ restaurant is very clean. I had veggie curry. I am here with my extended family tonight treating them to a family holiday and tonight is my turn to cook so I brought them for a treat at this lovely wee pub, and what a treat it was. Staff and locals so welcoming and friendly. The food is just 6 star and the portions are way to big for me. Don't be put off by the slightly worn look from the outside. Walk in and it is just a grand experience start to finish. Jock

Pub
The Sunny Hill Pub proved to be accommodating, allowing a group of 11 patrons to be seated promptly and even permitting the inclusion of dogs—a task often challenging due to limited dog-friendly restaurant options, especially for out-of-towners. The service provided was exceptional, with amicable and supportive staff members. A wide array of delectable meal choices were available, all generously portioned, causing everyone in the group to struggle to finish their plates.
Beautiful food, lovely presented and a good varied menu. The service was brilliant and very attentive andfriendly. Quick service and pipping hot. Would highly recommend.

Amazing homecooked food, extremely generous portions, table service, child friendly.
Ebony S — Google review
Generous portions and very good service. The mixed grill is huge and my wife donated her black pudding. They even have a draught beer in the pub's name. The only problem is that they have a small car park.
Henry W — Google review
They were prepared to seat 11 of us with no notice at all and bring our dogs along (it was very difficult to find a restaurant that will accept dogs, something that can be a problem if you are from out of town). The service was great with friendly and helpful staff. Plenty of delicious meals to choose from and the portion sizes was huge! Everyone struggled to finish their food. Absolutely delicious! Very pleasantly surprised! They also have their own private parking which was not on the road.
Angel M — Google review
Came on a Wednesday evening to an extremely busy pub, we didn't pre book and did have a struggle finding some parking nearby luckily found some on the road as the car park was rammed. Thankfully they found a table for the two of us, we just had to wait at the bar for around 10 minutes. Drinks prices were very reasonable and the football was playing so that passed the time. Food was really good, huge portions along with being really flavourful and most importantly piping hot. The soup of the day although it probably won't be available again was spicy pumpkin soup and it was without a doubt the best soup I have ever had, so many places do soup so poorly but wow if the rest of their soups are this good you'd always be pleased. Would definitely return even if it was just for a pint and to watch some sports on their huge TVs. Definitely recommend.
Keiran — Google review
A good selection of food, friendly staff and a sizeable dining area but be prepared for it to be busy! We visited on a Wednesday night and luckily we had booked ahead of time, the place was packed and I couldn’t see any spare tables - very surprising but great to see for a midweek evening! The menu here is massive, plenty of choices amongst the many categories - there’s definitely something for everyone! Unfortunately we had to wait around 30 minutes for our drinks & food order to be taken, we were tucked away in the corner and given how busy it was, a bit of a wait is understandable. Our server was apologetic for the delay and she was very friendly, she also made sure our drinks came straight away to avoid further delay. Food came after around an hour, again - a bit of a wait but the conversation and the atmosphere was good so we weren’t overly bothered about the time, like I said it was really busy so it’s understandable! The food came and the portion sizes were great, I went for the peri peri butterfly chicken breast, the chicken was cooked well but it did lack a little in the peri peri seasoning - maybe a peri peri dip with this dish would be a nice complement. The chips were lovely and the coleslaw was really good too. I was very full after the meal and didn’t have room for pudding, the cakes in the stand definitely did look good though so I’ll have to make sure I get one next time! Overall, a lovely pub meal in a nice pub/restaurant and I would definitely recommend if you’re in the area! I will just add that the parking isn’t the best, the car park fills up very quickly and you may have to park on the street so keep this in mind if you are visiting during peak hours!
Lee R — Google review
Came today small car park which was full while we was there. Got took to a seat very nice modern interior. Theres a very small indoor kids play area which was free while we was there. Have to keep eye on your little ones tho as the kids that was in there wouldnt let my lad in the door. I enjoyed my steak burger but my Mrs didn't enjoy the fish so mixed review! There was poor selection on ciders aswel! More expensive than average pub but you do get good portion size. Kids meal is £8 for drink meal and pudding. Couldn't find menu online so took some pictures. Staff seemed friendly. Overall was OK but wouldn't return.
