Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Peel Castle, located on the Isle of Man, offers a free audio tour of its scenic ruins. The castle features a curtain wall surrounding towers, as well as a church and cathedral. Built by Thomas Stanley in the late 15th century, it is believed that St. Peter's Church was already in existence before the castle's construction. Originally a place of worship, Peel Castle later became the fort of Magnus Barefoot, an 11th-century Viking King of Mann.
This was one of our favourite stops on the island. Situated across a bridge from Peel, it's a ruined castle and cathedral with a lot of history and fantastic views out to sea. It does open slightly later than other heritage attractions so just double check the timings. There's a booth as you enter where you can buy tickets and a guidebook. Further inside, there are toilets available too. Inside the ruins, it's quite sparse in terms of information boards however they offer an audio guide if you wish to give extra information. I actually quite liked it because it's such an evocative place that it meant you could really visualize what was there (and take great photos too!) Don't miss the gravestones as well, the etchings are very interesting and give an insight into Peel history! Be aware, there are lots of bunny holes too and the ground is a little rough in places! Due to falling masonry and restoration, a few areas are cordoned off too.

Visiting Peel Castle has been my highlight on our visit to the Isle of Man. Having been one of the most important places in the turbulent history of the island, its admirably well preserves walls can tell many a tale of old Celts, Vikings, kings, bishops, comquerors and armies. You can walk around the place freely for a small admission fee, guided by audio or a book, and learn about the castle, the church with its dungeon, and the ghost dog Moddey Dhoo. I could have spent all day here!
Bina C — Google review
To be honest, without a guide there may be little point in paying for entry. There are spectacular views outside and around the castle. The history inside the castle is fascinating but you only learn that from a guide (unless you've done extensive persoanl research via the internet yourself but even them you'll miss out on local knowledge form those that have studied, and can show you, the history. I recommend John Shakespeare as a guide form VISIT MANN TOURS. But you should take in the castle whether you go inside or remain around the perimeter. And if the weather is kind (and not always the case on the Isle of Man) then you will be rewarded with spectacular sunsets.
Ian F — Google review
one of the most breathtaking places ive ever been to, the ancient ruins of Peel Castle contrasted with its surrounding landscape beautifully. Walking inside the grand fortress and seeing the sea surrounding the castle was so peaceful
Derenik B — Google review
This castle instantly reminded me of Murud Janjira Fort in India, surrounded by the vast, blue sea and wrapped in strong, chilly winds from all directions. One thing to note: We made the mistake of buying tickets to go inside. Honestly, there’s not much to see inside the castle. Instead, I’d recommend walking around it the views from the outside are far better and totally worth it!
Adesh M — Google review
There are times to go in to this castle and times not. We were there during a windy rainy day and I would have stayed longer in the dry or sun. It's a great place to visit so I hope the weather is kinder to you!
Brian D — Google review
Well worth a visit. Interesting audio guide and lots to learn about the History here. My only tip is choose a good weather day.

Beach
Fenella Beach on the Isle of Man is a picturesque and scenic spot with more seashells than sand, making it unique. It offers stunning views of Peel Castle and is perfect for leisurely walks, photography, and exploring the castle. The beach is ideal for swimming and sunbathing in the summer months, as well as being a great place to bring dogs for some seaside fun.
It's a great, sandy beach located on the east coast of the Isle of Man. It has charity shops, ice cream parlour, fish and chips restaurant, pubs and restaurants in it. It's peaceful and quiet. You can visit the castle nearby or two of the museums. It also has some beach huts.
Irem H — Google review
Best time to view this beach is around sunset. So probably finishing the Peel castle tour by about 5ish, and then spending some time on this beach. Lots of scallop shells can be found here- can be pretty souvenirs. Water's very cold.

Ruins of St Peter's Church

Historical landmark
The Ruins of St. Peter's Church offer a poignant glimpse into history, standing as a testament to resilience after a devastating fire in the 1950s. While only a solitary wall and an iconic bell tower remain, the site is rich with stories waiting to be uncovered. Nestled away from the usual tourist trails, it invites visitors to stroll through its grounds and reflect on its past.
Ruins of the St Peter`s church destroyed by fire in the fifties. The site now stands like a memoriam with only the tower and outer remains with tombstones left.
CHOCCY B — Google review
Old derelict church with grave stones in . Pity couldn’t read a lot of the gravestones to find out the history of the people in the past but you could read some of them. Not a lot left of the ruins .

For visitors to England, this was a worthwhile destination. It's a bit off the beaten path, but walking the grounds and chatting with the friendly staff at the museum were wonderful.

Peel Beach

Peel Beach is a popular tourist spot on the Isle of Man, offering stunning views of Peel Castle and sandstone cliffs. It's a favorite childhood memory for many, evoking feelings of endless summers and carefree days spent skimming stones or flying kites. The west coast beach features golden sands protected by a large breakwater, making it ideal for families.
Peel Beach is definitely one of the Isle of Man highlights. I would call it a cosy spot, inviting to chill. Or, of course, perfect for a stroll around, especially around the castle. I would love to have much more stands offering snacks. Especially, for my taste, with fish. There's much more to do with fish, rather to fry it in some bake cover ☺️

Leece Museum is a hidden gem in Peel, offering a journey through the town's rich heritage. The museum features an array of eclectic objects that trace Peel's history, along with photographs and documents for those interested in family history research. Visitors can step back in time at the beautifully preserved Grove Museum, which provides insight into Victorian and Edwardian life through period rooms with original furnishings, a costume room, and displays of three generations' possessions.
Little gem of a museum. Upstairs I believe was a magistrates court, downstairs the jail cells. Upstairs hosts an array of local historical items, and downstairs the cell is full of motorcycles. Must visit.

The staff at Harbour Lights Café & Restaurant are extremely friendly and welcoming. The breakfast is presented beautifully, although it may be slightly pricier than other options. However, the quality of the food, especially the sausage, makes it worth the extra cost. The café itself is decorated with great care and attention to detail. It is also dog-friendly, with the owner even providing a fancy water bowl for furry companions.
Very welcoming staff, breakfast beautifully presented, slightly more expensive than some other breakfasts but the quality of the food, particularly the sausage made it worth it. Great care has been taken to decorate the cafe. Dog friendly, the owner even brought a posh water bowl bor the dog.

We booked lunch here before we even left England as the reviews were so good - it definitely lived up to expectations! Great location and we were lucky enough to have a window seat so we could see the boats. Food was good, the place was rammed but still great / quick service and lovely food. Really great atmosphere - would recommend booking as even on a freezing cold day in February it was full over lunch time. Good menu choices and the cakes at the counter looked delicious!
Sara W — Google review
Had a great breakfast this morning there. The lovely lady opened at bit earlier. Lovely food and great service. Will definitely be back for another meal there.
Stephen C — Google review
We rocked up after lunch service had finished, a family of 7 hungry people. The owner was superb. He went back into the kitchen, switched everything back on and prepared for us, 7 lovely, meals. Nothing was too much trouble and he was welcoming and we had some nice chats. Food was excellent. The home cooked chips were better than from a fish & chip shop. They were so fresh and cooked lovely. Excellent wee find. Lovely atmosphere. Great food. Superb host! Highly recommended, oh, and as one of us is a coeliac so needs gluten free, that wasn't an issue either. I'm back on the Isle in 4 weeks and will definitely pop back in for lunch!

Not many cafes open in Peel in February, but glad this one was. The full English was superb, as I am led to believe was the Eggs Florentine. Nice and chatty owner too.

Went here for a pub lunch and it wasn't great. Food was mediocre and the staff were not interested in serving. Felt like we had to interrupt their gossip sessions to get them to help us. It also smelled of old smoke and alcohol stained carpets. Would not recommend unless it is dark, you aren't hungry, and maybe have had a pint or two so the smell doesn't bother you. I would never go here again ☹️.

Ordered queenies, quite expensive; the portion was tiny. Could buy nearly a kilo of queenies for the price of about 100 gram at this restaurant
Igor M — Google review
Our party of eight dined at this establishment, where orders are placed at the bar. The service approach was inefficient, as each individual order was taken first, and only after all four couples had ordered were the drinks prepared. As a result, by the time we returned to our table, our meals had already been served, and we were still waiting for our beverages. The food itself was disappointing thinly sliced meat warmed in gravy, accompanied by an overly soft, unappealing plate of sides. At £18 per meal, the quality did not justify the price. If this style of dining appeals to you, this venue may be suitable. However, for a more enjoyable experience, I would recommend trying the Boat Restaurant up the road. Dont make our mistake!

Visiting the island for a few days. I nearly didn’t visit this pub after reading some reviews. Well I’m glad I didn’t listen. We had three mini lamb roasts and one ham, egg and chips. They were brilliant. Good value, ample portions and most importantly nicely cooked. Hopefully we can visit again before we have to leave for home. Thank you.

The Boatyard Restaurant offers a great atmosphere and welcoming staff. The pickle pot with mussels and scallops is a unique and flavorful dish worth trying again. The seafood chowder has a delightful smoky flavor from the ham, while the fish finger bap is fresh and served in an excellent bun. The Silver Surfers Menu provides good value for money with well-portioned courses, showcasing the chef's expertise in cooking.
Probably one of the best restaurants in the island, next to the sea with wonderful views. Staff was very attentive, polite and elegant, they suggested us the fishes of the day, the skate wing came from another world, a world where I'd love to live because that taste was incredible! Rosemary soup was definitely somethin, it was delicious. Prices are bit higher than other regular restaurants but it's worth it. 100% recommended.

Had heard this place had a good reputation for its menu. So I booked for Lunch and Evening meals. I wasn`t disappointed. I had always wanted to try Cullen Skink (subtle flavour of the sea) and the monkfish curry were outstanding.. then later the Queenie pancake and the battered fish matched the quality. Service was attentive and the ambience was perfect. A winning combo and highly recommend.

Arriving with little hope of snagging a seat, we were pleasantly surprised by the accommodating staff who promptly secured a table for us. Service surpassed expectations, and the recommended fish dish proved to be a culinary delight. The diverse menu offered a plethora of tantalizing options, and my main course left me positively astonished. A visit is highly recommended, and the nearby town adds to the overall charm of the experience!

The food was very good and the waiter's service was kind, which is why I left a tip. If I had to base it on the service from the waitress, I wouldn't have: when we asked to change tables (my partner is 2 meters tall and couldn't fit his legs under the table), she said it wasn't possible. Yet there were two-person tables that were not occupied or reserved that would have made the lunch more comfortable. It's a shame; sometimes it takes so little.
