Parks
The Talkin Tarn Country Park is a picturesque lakeside recreation area that offers activities such as sailing, fishing, and windsurfing. It also features woodland trails that lead to stunning views of the tarn and local hills. The park has free entry but charges a small fee for parking. Visitors can enjoy delicious pastries, sandwiches, cakes, tea, and coffee at the cafe run by friendly staff. The park's clean toilets ensure visitors' comfort throughout their stay.
Such a beautiful place with a beautiful lake. I really enjoy going for a walk with my family over there. They have good cakes at the shop and coffee. The staff was nice as well They have 1 or 2 things for kids to play not so many, we haven't used it yet. You can rent a boat and enjoy, go for a walk around the lake or just chill out on a bench with a coffee and admiring the view
Denisa T — Google review
Lovely little lake with paths around, tea room and toilets. Accessibility notes: The walk round the lake is fully wheelchair accessible. There is an accessible toilet with radar key and shower, and some accessible parking bays further in next to the buildings (there are also accessible parking bays in the main car park with 3hrs free on a blue badge, but there are speed bumps on the very short road to the utility buildings!).
Keziah G — Google review
Lovely 2.5 km walk around the yarn. All flat so good for prams. Great views and wildlife. There is a tea room and boathouse. Plenty of picnic tables outside and playgrounds.
Kristen M — Google review
Lovely little lake - only 1.2 miles in circumference so a great walk-around. Has a tea and coffee cafe and lovely benches scattered around the lake to rest and take in the scenery! Parking is through a paid machine on the premises (you can use coins). Lots of canoeing happens on the lake and dogs very welcome!
Belinda H — Google review
First time visiting today will definitely be going back. Easy walk around the lake if you dont want to walk through the woodland. Boats, paddle boarding and canoeing on the lake. Then chill at the cafe. Dog friendly too sell doggy ice cream. We didn't stop at the cafe as was eating out, so can't comment on that other than being really busy so must be good.
Susan H — Google review
The park itself is a lovely place to visit, with a beautiful lake and scenic walks. There is a reasonably priced cafe with loads food & drink options, however paying for parking (in the large well set out car park) was an absolute nightmare! No matter how we tried we could not pay by card and the AP required to pay over the Web did not work. We managed to scrape together enough money to pay, but it did not give any change! (This is the only reason I gave it 4 stars)
Jason S — Google review
Beautiful park with stunning views. Easy walk around the lake. Plenty of seats for those who need to take a rest.
Lorna B — Google review
Only taken me about 20 years but I finally managed a visit to Talkin Tarn. Great place with wheelchair accessible walk around the Tarn, about 1.5 miles. Lovely cafe and decent toilets. Kayak hire, archery (book in advance) and a crazy golf. Parking £2.60 all day.

Lake
Talkin Tarn is a picturesque destination with woodland and forest areas like Gelt Woods, Miltonrigg Wood, Rowbank Wood, and The Mote/Ridge Wood nearby. It's a popular spot for families and dog walkers, offering easy walking paths around the tarn and leading to other villages. Visitors can enjoy amenities such as a cafe, public conveniences, and reasonable parking prices with an available app for cashless transactions. The area features a playground and a 1.
Lovely place to get some air, we were lucky enough to get a bit of sun and it was beautiful. Little cafe onsite was nice, parking was just a few pound for all day and a little park for the kids to break things up.
Paul W — Google review
The perfect place to visit on a hot summer’s day with family. We took a gentle stroll around the lake which had shady wooded parts, watched the model boats and had an ice cream at the lovely cafe. It was cheap to park and the parking lasts all day so no time pressure. There is a little cabin to hire rowing boats as well. Unfortunately, the lake itself had Blue Green Algae in it so we decided not to take a swim. Although, there were signs saying whether it was safe or not at any given time. There is a rota for different activities on the lake during the week that is worth checking before you go. Well worth a visit.
Anthony B — Google review
Lovely place to take the dog for a walk. Can keep to the path round the tarn or can take paths off the route to take a longer more scenic route. Nice cafe on site. Would highly recommend.
Christopher H — Google review
With a walking group and parked here, wandered round the tarn on our route. It is a clean, quiet and atmospheric place....so pleased we came.
David E — Google review
Went for a walk here on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Managed to find a parking space easily. The one way system around the lake to comply with social distancing all makes sense. The walk itself (we just did the basic circular around the main path around the lake) was 1.3 miles and flat so our 3 and 5 year old both managed it easily enough. The playground was lovely and the scenery is spectacular. Family friendly day out! Would definitely go back.
Stacey M — Google review
Cracking walking area. Families and dog walkers used this area. There’s a cafe and public conveniences. We never used the cafe but a few people recommended it to us on the day. Nice easy walking around the tarn. There is a few paths which lead off to other villages too. Parking prices are reasonable with a app available if you have no cash. Mobile signal was good so getting the app wasn’t an issue. Pay attention to your car park Id as some will give the the price for cars , coaches or minibuses. Very enjoyable place
Nigel E — Google review
Great for families and dogs. Lovely walk with stunning scenery. Cafe too. Flat walk around the tarn or explore the wildlife through the woods.
Debbie — Google review
Great place to walk. Lots of wildlife and nature. Enjoy a hot cup of tea or some food at the cafe/takeaway. Plenty of parking and disability friendly.

Guests have praised the center for its excellent instructors who provide thorough safety briefings and friendly guidance. Whether it's kayaking with Amy or trying out archery with Darren, visitors have had fantastic experiences.
We had a wonderful archery lesson today with Amy at the tarn. The setting is beautiful and Amy was extremely knowledgeable and professional. We had a mix of ages (all novices) in our group and she was wonderful with all! A very skilled and enthusiastic teacher !

We can not recommend Talkin Adventures enough - sadly we live too far away to visit regularly. Darren was so easy to book with, really helping us out with our three children whilst we were in the area for a family wedding. Amy and Amy were amazing on the day - they did archery, canoeing and orienteering and catered for my fussy youngest. My children still talk about how much fun it was. Thank you all at Talkin 👍🏻
Laura P — Google review
I went for an archery session today, and it was much better experience than previous archery events I have been to at a holiday camp. The instructor was very informative and helpful, I appreciated her tips on how to improve my aim. I will be back for more sessions.

We had a fabulous time yesterday at Talkin Tarn. Our instructor was Amy who made us feel comfortable and welcome from the word go. She was informative and made sure we were all enjoying ourselves throughout the session. We had a young child with us and Amy put her at ease 😊 thank you Amy, we will be back in the near future 🛶🛶

Had an amazing experience with Talkin adventures. Booked raft building for a large group of adults and we all had such a fun time. The team were fabulous, were on hand for guidance and planned some great games for us and then they provided an amazing video at the end. Can't recommend them enough!!!

We had a work team event doing Archery. It was great fun and the instructors were excellent. There were lots of different games to play once we got hang of the bow and arrow. Would highly recommend.

Had a fantastic time Paddle Boarding, with Amy being the perfect instructor! It was so much fun and as a beginner(me) and relative beginner (Diane), we were both standing up on the boards and scooting across the tarn after a very short while. Would thoroughly recommend giving it a go. Thanks "Talkin Adventures" and Amy for a wonderful experience. Trevor & Diane

Oh she’s a belter. Awesome undulations fairway and green. Some of the highest evaluations I’ve played on hitting fairways and greens that look so small in the distance. Highly recommend a buggy if you have pigeon legs or suffer with shortness of breath or heart problems. Have fun

Third visit to the course on our golf holiday. The course, views, staff and pro shop are absolutely first class. Didn’t spoil our day but showers not working properly. Would 100% recommend anyone to come and play here. It is on my list of all time favourite courses

Great Course. Very well kept in fantastic condition. One of the most characterise courses I’ve ever played. The green complexes were also brilliant. I hope to play again sometime as i would have played some holes differently but overall superb and really enjoyed it.

Our first visit, will go back, great course , well maintained, great views excellent greens. One disappointment was that they stopped serving meals at about 3 pm instead of 4pm due to a function later that evening so could not get a meal, would have been nice to be forewarned.

Amazing course with testing fairways and greens. Bar staff are very friendly and helpful. Food is top notch and cannot wait to go back some time. Thank you also to John the President for making us feel so welcome.

Gallery North West is an exquisite and stunning modern art exhibition in the charming market town of Brampton, positioned just 9 miles west of Carlisle. Situated near the renowned Hadrian's Wall and conveniently located off the primary A69 road, this gallery presents an ideal destination for a visit. Showcasing more than 27 exceptional artists from Cumbria, South Scotland, and the North East region, it offers a remarkable display that should not be missed.
My Mom Dad and I Purchased 2 prints of the Carlisle Castle back in 1977. I found the 2 prints packed in a box. I remember them as a teenager hanging on the fire place at My Parents house. They just passed away, now I have them hanging on my fireplace. The prints,on the back have labels on them that say.” MOSS GALLERIES BRAMPTON” this print is guaranteed to be over 100 years old. Also a business card that says” MOSS GALLERIES 17-19 High Cross Street BRAMPTON Cumbria” Brampton( 069 77) 2910. Thanks Cliff Love the prints. I was 14 at the time of purchase. 👍

Indian takeaway
If you're on the hunt for a delightful culinary experience, look no further than Brampton Tandoori. This gem offers an array of mouthwatering dishes, with the lamb tikka standing out as a must-try—tender and bursting with flavor. The friendly staff enhance your visit, ensuring you feel right at home while enjoying their delicious offerings.
Absolutely brilliant! The lamb tikka is a must-try – tender, full of flavour, and cooked to perfection. The staff are friendly and very helpful, making the whole experience feel welcoming. Prices are fair and great value for the quality, and they also offer delivery, which is super convenient. Highly recommended!
Umer W — Google review
We ordered Chicken tikka masala, Chicken tikka Korma, Chicken tikka pathia and Prawn Dansak. It was a quiet Friday evening, wasn't busy at all. Place looks worn and in need of a renovation on the inside. It's not a problem for me so long as the food is good. When we arrived back to the Airbnb we discovered the Dansak wasn't made with prawn, they made it with chicken. To make matters worse - it was spicier than the Pathia, so the wife just couldn't eat it even if she wanted to. I had to eat it and give up my Pathia to my daughter who gave up her tikka masala for my wife. And the tikka masala was sweeter than the korma, I guess I'm just looking for criticisms now. I saw him write Prawn Dansak when I ordered so the chef must have got it wrong. They gave us free poppadoms though. Kind server, but incompetent chef. We all make mistakes though I guess. You expect better under the circumstances Gutted we didn't choose the other local Indian takeaway around the corner. That place looked clean and modern at least when we passed the next day.
Gareth E — Google review
Dirtiest, grimmest takeaway seating area I've ever seen. Service was good, very nice guy behind the counter. Food was dull and tasteless. Sorry, but having seen good reviews we opted for this place over other options. Wish we hadn't.

Amazing Food, So Delicious And Amazing customer service And very friendly staff.
Rayhan M — Google review
Unfortunately awful customer service, staff member seemed bored and like we were bothering him by ordering, not friendly at all.. ordered on a Sunday at 6.50 and told a 40 min wait, not told the price or that it’s cash only, and once we collected (after 45 minutes) the food was ALL cold! Really disappointed as we’re up visiting and this place came really highly recommended. I imagine the food would’ve been nice if it wasn’t so cold. Sorry to post a bad review but this did seem necessary after almost £30

The friendly staff provides warm welcomes to both humans and furry friends, making it a great pit stop for all. They were able to fit us in for afternoon tea and it was great. We had such a good time plenty of food and cakes. Lovely atmosphere.

Beautiful little hidden gem. We had an amazing afternoon tea, where there was so much cake we had to take some home, to enjoy later. Everything was homemade and tastes amazing. We had never ending tea brought to our table, the staff were so welcoming and warm. All topped off with beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

Found this little tearoom whilst out on gallery deliveries, a great cup of tea and a latte with a good value menu too :) We had a savoury snack (toasted tea cake and a sausage and egg sandwich) but the homemade cakes looked amazing! Great choice too! Very friendly, helpful staff, thank you :) Oh - and you can buy Christmas Trees here too!!
Diane W — Google review
Visited on holiday after looking at the reviews we were hopeful of a nice visit. Unfortunately the tea room is average at best. Food average we had a tuna cheese melt panini with hardly any cheese . Coleslaw tasted shop bought and dry . Made it worse that there was a woman sat outside where we were eating smoking a cigarette and you could smell it. Not great and tbh very disrespectful.
Dale B — Google review
This was a great find for a pit stop. Lovely location with indoor and outdoor seating, friendly staff and customers. Although we didn't get to try the cakes they looked amazing. There's a good size car park and I believe a nursery joined to it which was closed when we were there. Can't fault it.

Let me start by saying I loved this place, nice comfortable rooms and the evening meal was excellent (the haggis bon bons were top notch). But I'm also disappointed, when we checked in we were told breakfast is served from 8am, bearing in mind how good the evening meal was I was looking forward to it. We were downstairs at 7.50 to find the place was in darkness, we waited until 8 on the dot, but still no signs of life.......so we left disappointed as we could not afford to loose any more time on an already busy day.

We were so pleased we called in last Saturday. Lovely roaring fire and a warm welcome. It was lunchtime, so we sat at a table by the fire and ordered Fish pie with vegetables and my husband ordered Cumberland sausage and all the trimmings. A large glass of wine and a pint to wash it down. It was totally delicious and good sized portions. Afterwards he had Carmel sticky toffee pudding and custard and I had home made blackberry and rhubarb crumble with custard. OMG it was so good I could have had another. If only we lived closer we would be there every week. Thankyou for a lovely lunch.
Helen E — Google review
The pub is very nice in a lovely place but the food is very basic . The food came to quickly as if was on a hot holding cabinet in fact it reminded me like it was a Blackpool b n b place. Stuck in the 70s it was just warm I was a little disappointed and was expecting better 😕
Graham B — Google review
Quaint location in a lovely village setting. Rooms are grotty to say the least. The whole place has not been decorated since 1970, and is in desperate need. Service slow across the board. Wouldn't stay again.
Terence R — Google review
We went for dinner with a friend and it was amazing. The pup is cosy and warm, there were plenty of areas to sit and drink/eat and even though it got pretty busy, tables were well spaced so it didn't feel crowded. Staff were really friendly and helpful. The food was epic - the brie starter especially! We will be back!
Alistair M — Google review
Lovely village pub with Timothy Taylor's Landlord on as a guest ale. Very friendly vibe.
Niall B — Google review
Set in a lovely location with easy parking. Rooms are very dated and basic, bathroom good but with no ventilation that works. The pub itself has had no investment for nearly 50 years in my view, and is extremely dated in its style and decor. We were advised not to eat here by a local but everywhere else was closed on a Monday night so we had no choice. I can without doubt say that this is the worst food I've ever eaten. We choose 3 starters with chips to share. Everything was cooked from frozen including the chips. Very over cooked and tasteless. Chicken goujons were more like nuggets and burnt to a tasteless cinder. My advise, don't eat here.

Lanercost Priory, located in Cumbria, was established in 1166 by Henry II and inhabited by Augustinian canons. It has had a tumultuous history, hosting both King Edward I and Robert Bruce. The ruins of the priory remain peaceful and well preserved, with some ancient grave stones within the parish church that was restored from the disrepair after dissolution. The adjacent part of the church is still in use today.
What a fantastic place to visit. Amongst the best priories that I have visited. The staff member on the reception desk who greeted us was friendly and attentive. As well as being an excellent guide on how to spot the gargoyles which are not to be missed! The place is absolutely buzzing with life, kestrels currently nesting, barn swallows, and lovely little flowers just sprouting from the ruins. Great place to stop into if you're in the area!

A must if you are in the area. You can walk 0.5miles to Hadrians Wall from the abbey but it was raining. Tea rooms and gift shop also on site. Great pit stop on the way to the wall. The swallows dance in and out of the buildings.

Absolutely loved this place. The English Heritage guide was brilliant, full of information. You could tell he loved the place and not just worked there. It's not a big site but well worth a visit

The active church is wheelchair accessible but the ruins are not. The embankment is far too steep to wheel down safely unless you don't mind tipping over! Plenty of parking, gift shop and cafe. Friendly helpful staff and dog.

An impressive ruin. Some remarkably well preserved medieval tombs and some striking architecture. Then visit the church next door. Do the Priory as part of a longer day's outing...it will not long detain you. Perhaps Birdoswald Roman fort, about 6 miles away.

Absolutely amazing priory with great vibe. The history is just breathing on you. Entrance was 8 pounds, but money well invested. Shame this amazing building was ruined. The entrance to the church is free

If you're a fan of destroyed historic buildings than that's a place to be for you. The entry is not for free (12£ for adults) so we decided to visit the graveyard and took photos of the Priory from outside.

Banks East Turret - Hadrian's Wall

Heritage building
Banks East Turret, located just outside the village of Banks in Cumbria, stands as a remarkable testament to Roman history along Hadrian's Wall. This turret is celebrated for being one of the best-preserved structures in the western section of the wall, which was originally constructed under Emperor Hadrian’s orders around AD 122.
Part of UNESCO Turret 52a Banks East. Excavations in 1933 uncovered remains of the demolished Turf Wall abutting the turret's east wall. The turret was in use from around the early 2nd century until at least the end of the 3rd century. The entrance is on the southeast side, and traces of two hearths and a low bench along the north west wall. The walls have been consolidated and restored, and stand to a maximum height of 1.75 metres. The turret was the first section of Hadrian's Wall to be placed in the guardianship of the Ancient Monuments department in 1934.

Be a part of history! Stand at Hadrian's Wall and look over into what was once the mighty Roman Empire. Great photo op spot.
Gregory S — Google review
Having visited the fort at Birdoswald and Vindolanda it would have been rude not to stop off here on the drive home. The only facilities here is a small car park that you pay for via an app. The area is accessible and the views stunning. Not to be passed by. Earlier in the day when passing by coach loads of visitors were on site enjoying the views, turret, and Hadrian's Wall. When driving this area it's essential to be aware of the walkers and cyclists.
Willow T — Google review
Stop off on our camping tour. Hadrian forced his men to build this fortification to keep the heathens out of the Roman empire. Nice try but let's be fair it wasn't going to last. Got a shot of what was Roman Britain to the south and then north beyond the wall land of the barbarians. Noticed the holes cut out for door hinges have lasted the test of time. Shame the Romans left, might have helped us when Ragnar popped over for a visit.
M R — Google review
Lovely spot to park and explore this section of the wall. You will need to pay to park but this can be done via your mobile, instructions are printed on the walls. There are no toilets or facilitates near by. Take food and drink. I recommend exploring the valley along the river, absolutely beautiful.
Chris T — Google review
Personally a really scenic view of the surrounding countryside is had here. There is a car park to sit in as well. I was sat near the turret and just admired being surrounded by so much history. I love discovering Hadrian’s Wall. You feel as though you’re going back to that era and what it must’ve been like defending England against barbarians. Very enjoyable 👍🏻
Kathryn H — Google review
We stopped off here on our way to our holiday. The car park was pretty small and rather pricey. It cost us £4 pounds to park although machine took one of my pound coins without registering it making it cost us £5. The site itself was rather expensive to go into, we decided to stay outside as we able to see the whole site without going in. We didn't stay too long as there wasn't much there.

Maybe you've thought to yourself: "I'd like to visit a great historical landmark from the Roman era". Well let me (a filthy Colonist) tell you! This place is exactly what you're looking for. It's got a great drive up country roads to some free parking and a very old wall meant to keep Picts out. Beautiful scenery and a fun trip for anyone of any age.

Pike Hill Signal Tower - Hadrian's Wall

4.3
(33)
Historical landmark
It's remarkable to think that a tower once stood at Pike Hill, vigilantly observing the surrounding land. The view from here is truly captivating, especially compared to what can be seen from the road. Although I'm not an archaeologist, it was nice to see this unique structure amidst all the other turrets along Hadrian's Wall. The information board provided valuable insights into its historical significance, predating the construction of The Wall itself.
Part of UNESCO Pike Hill Signal Tower was one of a number of signal stations that were built on high ground overlooking the line of the Roman Stanegate road in northern Britannia during the early 2nd century. It later became incorporated into Hadrian's Wall.
Pete H — Google review
Totally uncrowded when we visited. Great views and some wonderful fresh air. It's great to touch a party of history, but visiting here isn't for everyone. It's only exciting if you like archeology and Britannic-Roman history. It was a reasonable drive from Edinburgh so if you're looking for a nice countryside sojourn, this is a good option
Craig G — Google review
I only live 2 minutes away and didn't even realise this historical site existed, thankfully after friends visited us I searched to find something unique and linked to Hadrians Wall local to us. Nice little quiet location with some outstanding views, you cam see why the Romans built to the wall here for the views, oh and to keep the northern heathens out 😁 there's this tower and some exposed wall and mile post tower nearby. Great little find.
Graham L — Google review
Hard to believe a tower once stood here observing the land. So fascinating to view. It’s a good thing I was walking back to Birdoswald as from the road you don’t get much of a good view. Well, it was a tower after all 😂🤣

Nice to break up all the other turrets, but as a non-archeologist couldn't really tell the difference. Information board was good though.

Hare Hill - Hadrian's Wall

4.3

Historical landmark
Hare Hill, also known as Hadrian's Wall, is a remarkable historical landmark with a preserved section of the Roman Wall. This piece of Jadrians wall, located about 8.9 miles from the last camp, showcases exceptional historical preservation. The Scottish side was restored in the 19th Century, adding to its significance. Additionally, nearby banks turrets and a lime kiln offer further insights into the past.
A beautiful and truly remarkable piece of our history. Nearly 2000 years later still standing, partially taken down to build the nearby priory, 700 years later. It's an amazing feeling to touch a stone, that has been carried here by a Roman soldier in cca. AD 125. Definitely worth visiting! 😍
Zsoka S — Google review
Very busy and popular with tourists so we didn’t stay long. I didn’t take many photos as it was hard to get a clear shot. You have to pay to park in addition to paying for a ticket to enter so it feels like a bit of a tourist trap. Worth a look though.
Lisa H — Google review
Bloomin' heck two days hike along the Hadrian's Wall Path and this is the first bit of wall? Jokes aside a very cool moment to see the first standing section of wall and read the lovely information board.

First actual piece of preserved Roman Wall in a good 8.9 miles from our last camp. Fantastic piece of historical preservation. With the Scottish side being redone in the 19th Century. Forms for a very nice camping spot if anyone was thinking of doing that... 🤐 5 stars from me. 🌟

This is a wonderful piece of Jadrians wall. Makes a good bed to sleep on. 😴 the true master piece is about a mile to the east and are called the banks turrets. There is also a lime kiln there 😋. Now when you go you HAVE to post a selfie or the ghost of Hadrian will do things to you 😉.

New Mills Trout Fishing Park is a picturesque fishing park located near Brampton, just off the A69. The park features a 1.5-acre Troutmasters fly lake with Quarry Beck running through it, as well as a Fun Fishing Pond for bait fishing. Visitors can also enjoy glamping at Brampton Wigwams and explore the nearby market town of Brampton. The park offers facilities for beginners and disabled anglers, including equipment rental and basic fishing instructions.
Great staff and fishing. Excellent for kids as plenty to do. Brilliant for those wanting to catch their first fish or those wanting to fly fish on the trout master lake here. Varying depths and if the water is running clear you can see the fish below the surface. Wigwams also available to stay here and cafe on site providing really nice food at a decent price.
John M — Google review
I drove the family 400 miles to stay here after watching a couple of fly fishing videos on the place, I was not disappointed! The glamping pod we booked was clean & tidy, perfectly situated, cosy & warm. The pod we chose was dog friendly & had a hot tub which was fired up & like a bath when we arrived, perfect! The fishing was great, I broke my personal best fish whilst here & the tackle shop catered for any extra bits & pieces I might need. Everyone we spoke to was friendly & helpful, Izzy, Tony & the whole team go out of their way to be welcoming, informative & have a ‘can do’ attitude. The weather was very pleasant so we sat outside the cafe & enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere whilst we ate a cooked breakfast (which was delicious) before we started our long journey home. I can’t speak highly enough about this place, yes it was a long way away but when you find a little gem like this it’s worth the effort. Thank you for making our visit a pleasant one, we will definitely be back.

My young son has been desperate to try fishing and we visited New Mills this weekend. What a find! The location is stunning and the staff are amazing. There is a genuine desire to ensure visitors get the most of their visit and the staff couldn’t have been more friendly or attentive. My son had the best of days and we are so grateful for the experience. I can’t recommend this venue highly enough.

We had a fishing party for my six year old son here last week. The location is just off the A69 and easy to find. There is plenty of parking, although don't park near to the big lake as you'll get your car hit by an angler casting off. The staff were very helpful and patient, all equipment was provided and they made sure my Son caught a fish. The kids had a good time, although there was a lot of standing around and I wouldn't recommend it for smaller children. The adults enjoyed it too and it was reasonably priced. Overall it was good. Only criticisms I could make were that the food could have been better, the pizzas being a bit soggy and the chicken drumsticks didn't look appetizing. I would recommend bringing your own party picnic boxes. Also the path round the pond is lined with gravel on top, which is missing in places which meant it was a bit slippery. I lost my footing and fell over, as did at least one other adult.
Alan S — Google review
We visited New Mills Trout fishing park whilst on holiday in Cumbria. My two lads had never been fishing before and I hadn't been for many years so we had no equipment, tackle or bait. We obviously didn't have much clue on how to fish or were rusty at best. None of that mattered! We were provided with all that we needed, a rod each, a net, the bait and a quick run through of the basics that was enough to teach us what we needed to know and how to do it. We spent a good 2-3 hours fishing and all catched a trout each. It was fun and the lads had a great first experience of fishing. The place itself is beautiful. There is a toilet on site and a small shop. They gutted and filleted the fish we caught on site so that they were ready to cook when we got them home. Would 100% recommend even if you have never fished before. Thank you to the team at New Mills for making it an enjoyable experience and memory 🎣😃

Yesterday, I visited St Martin's Church in Brampton and was invited to attend a lay-led service today. The service was exceptionally executed, with careful planning and effort evident in every aspect. The connecting comments made during the service were brilliant and effectively led us to the thought-provoking sermon. The warmth and welcoming nature of everyone there were truly appreciated. Afterward, there was a lot of conversation over coffee.

During my recent visit to Hoi Sun Chinese Takeaway, I was pleasantly surprised by the delightful experience. It was my first time ordering from this establishment, and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. The service was impressively swift; after placing an order worth around thirty pounds over the counter, my food was ready in under twenty minutes! The prices were quite reasonable, and the staff members were exceptionally polite throughout my visit.
Was sitting by myself eating my pot of egg fried rice (which was delicious) when the Tv in the Hoi Sun came on BBC news projecting Breaking News and to my surprise it was that the Hoi Sun has decided to sponsor the Year 12 football team. About 10 seconds after airing the whole population of Brampton came to have a round of applause outside the Hoi sun throwing roses at the windows and leaving thank you cards. I take this as my queue to say Thank You Hoi Sun!

Started off quite well, servers were very kind, respectful and friendly. My food was made for my family and me. We got back home and dug in. All was well until three hours later when we were competing for the use of our two toilets. Me, my wife and three children were toilet bound with explosive diarrhoea for the next twelve hours having to do rotations among the five of us for the toilet. My water bill went up by £10 for how much we had to flush both toilets. The mess was even worse as we had to clean the carpets, bathroom and kitchen with more cleaning supplies than we had at the time. At one point both toilets were being used so my 6 year old son had to use the kitchen sink to relieve himself. Overall positive experience with the servers, an okay atmosphere and a nightmarish, horrific, disturbing and awful experience with the food itself. Would not recommend for food however a chat is quite good.

Went here with my boyfriend and ordered two portions of chicken chow main which made one for each of us. We ordered the food and waited. Note that in this establishment the workers/servers speak in chinese. Unknown to the servers my boyfriend also speaks Chinese as he moved back from china as his parents took him there for their work. As we waited, they spoke about something which my boyfriend was listening in to. The contents of this conversation was extremely, one might say radically, homophobic towards us with certain slurs I wouldn’t want to repeat on a public platform. However I did enjoy the food.

We ATTEMPTED to get a delivery as we asked them on the phone if they delivered and they said yes. We gave them our location and over an hour later they hadn’t arrived. We rang them up once again and they asked US if we were coming to collect. Waste of time and we had to go hungry for the night. Absolutely disgraceful.

Really enjoyed our food from Hoi Sun this evening. First time we've eaten from here and I am really very pleased. Service was quick, we ordered about thirty quids worth of food over the counter and it was ready in less than twenty minutes. Prices are reasonable and the staff polite. The food itself was great, not over salty like a lot of Chinese food can be, no MSG overload. The portions were generous with plenty of the meat and vegetables in which is where the main flavour came from which I really liked. It is honest, solid food without too much strong flavour, filled a hungry hole perfectly.

I asked locals which was the better chinese in the village. If you really love a good chinese then order elsewhere. Meal for 2 was over £30 and for that I expected it to be bang on. The satay chicken and beef in black bean was sloppy goo. I dont think it had been anywhere near a wok, just assembled in a takeaway box. Rice was fine. Not much flavour going on in the dishes we ordered. Ribs were wet and covered in more sloppy gravy. Probably the worst ive had and certainly the worst value for money. Big mistake.

I made telepohone order and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes! I don't know how you can prepare and cook a Chinese meal in 10 minutes. Unless its microwaved? Yes mine was. It was awful. Chicken s&s Hong Kong was very chewy, rice sticky and prawns in chow mein were tasteless and sauce very salty. Chips were just warm. Waste of money as went in the bin.

We stayed at Farlam Hall in April 2024 to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday and it was thoroughly enjoyable and memorable. Having recently stayed at another Relais & Chateaux Hotel (also UK) I was quickly reminded how exceptional Farlam Hall was and I felt compelled to come back and write a review as Farlam Hall is entirely in a league of its own. Passionate, friendly staff, immaculate cleanliness, beautiful interiors, calm and picturesque surroundings and the dining experience was outstanding. Birdoswald Roman Fort, located on a high spur overlooking the River Irthing, is the first major site on Hadrian's Wall when traveling from west to east. It boasts the best-preserved defenses of any major fort along this route. Visitors can explore the remains of defensive walls, gateways, barracks, granaries, and more. The site also features an informative visitor center with interactive displays and artifacts showcasing the history of Hadrian's Wall.
For people, who love ancient roman history. Just close your eyes, make a deep breath and imagine the life here seventeen centuries ago. There is a gift store. Wonderful place!

Birdoswald Roman Fort is a fantastic place to dive into the history of Hadrian’s Wall and really imagine what life must have been like on the edge of the Roman Empire. Set in a beautiful, dramatic landscape with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, it’s one of the most evocative and accessible spots along the wall. From the moment I arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, happy to answer questions and point out the best ways to explore the site. It’s clear they are passionate about the history and genuinely want visitors to have a great experience. The visitor centre is excellent, with plenty of information displays that are interesting without being overwhelming. The facilities are also top-notch — clean toilets, a nice little café for a post-walk coffee or snack, and a well-organized layout that makes it easy to navigate. One thing that stood out was the souvenir shop. It’s full of cool Roman-themed gifts, from books and replicas to fun items for kids. It’s much better than the typical tourist fare you find at many sites — definitely worth a browse. The fort itself is incredibly atmospheric. You can walk among the ruins, stand in the remains of ancient buildings, and really get a sense of the scale and significance of the place. There’s also easy access to stretches of Hadrian’s Wall for those wanting a longer walk through the landscape. The only downside to the visit was the broken ticket machine in the car park. Instead of being able to quickly pay and display, you have to go up to the visitor centre first to pay for parking, then head back to your car to put the ticket on display. It’s a small hassle but slightly annoying, especially if the weather isn’t cooperating or if you have mobility issues. That said, this was a minor inconvenience in an otherwise wonderful visit. Birdoswald Fort offers a perfect blend of history, scenery, and good facilities, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in Roman Britain or just looking for a beautiful and fascinating day out near Carlisle.

A classic #EnglishHeritage site. Absolutely stunning views, a good place to rest if you are heading on Hadrian Wall route. Nice cafe, big area and a very old oak tree, adding atmosphere and mood to the visit.

Excellent informative museum. Both the remains of the fort and the wall cannot fail to impress. The effort and skill that went to their creation is a,source of wonder. Cafe and shop.

We took a detour on our way home from our holiday in lovely Scotland and we were glad we did. It was a bit tricky to find, but we made it! The weather was wet and windy on and off, which made the right atmosphere to imagine what the Roman slaves and soldiers went through when they built and occupied the area. What a tough life they mush have had! The displays inside the shop area are really aimed at children, but we only saw a couple - probably too soon in the summer. Most of the visitors were walkers. We had an interesting and thought-provoking couple of hours at the fort.

English Heritage. Easy to understand with board's giving an explanation. There is also the outer wall with much still covered. HADRIAN'S WALL runs on the road side and is in an excellent shape. Photographs are a must.

Harrows Scar Milecastle and Wall - Hadrian's Wall

Historical landmark
Castle
Harrows Scar Milecastle and Wall, part of Hadrian's Wall, is a well-preserved section from the first century AD. It's located near Birdoswald Roman Fort and stands on each side of it. The milecastle is situated just west of the River Irthing and forms part of a stretch of stone fortifications built in the late second century AD.
Hadrian’s wall is of immense historical significance in Britain and it’s quite startling that so much remains. But it does seem odd to be in such beautiful countryside and realise that there was a time when the Romans considered it the end of the civilised world. What’s left is a long stone structure snaking across the fields and the regular stone outlines of the mile forts. I had hoped there may have been enough wall remaining to allow people to walk along it, but there are signs telling visitors not to do so. One of the most startling things about the wall in this area, is the utter peace and quiet. There was nothing to hear, other than the wind in the trees, birdsong, sheep bleating and the sounds of the River Irthing. It’s a magical place to visit.
Peter M — Google review
Part of UNESCO Milecastle 49 is immediately west of the gorge of the River Irthing where the Wall was carried over the river by the bridge at Willowford. The scar or cliff and hence the milecastle are named after an ancient tenement called The Harrows which stood nearby.

A good place to visit to know more about the history of Roman culture..

Visited the site on a sunny Sunday.Parking costed about £4 Stopped by the cafe for a quick coffee and desert which were quite decent. The gift shop was equipped with a variety of items not usually found everywhere with gladiator masks and souvenirs. The walk was enjoyable with beautiful views a lovely bridge and the beautiful river.Would recommend 8/10

Well worth a visit, a chance to see Hadrian's wall and a various forts and mile castles all within a small area. Beautiful countryside and fantastic history, a magical place.
Mark D — Google review
It's a wall. Get over it. Definitely worth a visit but it isn't cheap! Car park is slightly east of the main building and if you are coming from Carlisle you have that worry you have missed it. The car park costs a small fortune and then entry is the remainder of you gold. The stone work that is their is impressive in its own right and is massively added to by the combination of your imagination and the sign boards. We really haven't come on that much in the last couple of thousand years. Finally, and probably because I am a Scot, it really talks of the wall as the northern limits of the Roman empire which is not true. Antonine's wall up around the central belt of Scotland and plenty of camps and and buildings up the east coast and round all the way to Inverness. Minor moans.
Keir A — Google review
If this is the place of the English heritage, they don't let you use the toilet if you don't intend to buy a ticket for 19 pounds per person . Parking costs 4 pounds. In my opinion, probably more worth to walk along the wall to the bride with the river as seen on my pictures

The journey to reach this destination has been arduous, with a highly inclined route, yet the rewards have justified the efforts. The Willowford Roman Bridge, in its heyday, proved to be a remarkable structure connecting two areas. This historical landmark was once an exceptional architectural marvel that served as a crossing point.
Lovely scenery looking every direction. We took the path towards Gisland (about 1/2 mile) and had a coffee and cake. Getting there from Birdoswald Roman Fort is down a fairly steep hill, steeper going g up. Recommend good footwear.
Kristen M — Google review
Great place to walk alongside the wall to the remains of the bridge, the river flow has obviously changed over the centuries. Good footpath and reasonably level, until the steps which some might find a bit steep.
Judith S — Google review
This is a magically tranquil part of Hadrian’s Wall. There is a newly constructed steel bridge across the River Irthing and nearby the substantial ruins of the bridge structure. There were quite a number of people passing along the Hadrian’s Wall footpath, but it was still delightful and quiet.
Peter M — Google review
Part of UNESCO Willowford Roman bridge which carried Hadrian's Wall across the River Irthing. The westward movement of the river course over the centuries has left the east abutment of the bridge high and dry, while the west abutment has probably been destroyed by erosion. The much-modified visible remains are highly impressive. Until 1996, these remains were not directly accessible from the fort, but they can now be reached by the Willowford footbridge over the River Irthing.

Let’s be honest ,its a few rows of stonework and not a turret as such, but if you have a slight amount of imagination its great to imagine what this used to be like when it was a hive of activity!

This portion of Hadrians wall is nestled into the beautiful English countryside. We stayed at the Sampson Inn which had amazing food and super comfy rooms. A short walk into town shows this community is proud of their little burg. On my top ten little gem list.

A quiet gem of a section of Hadrians Wall, not often visited. Set in a lovely village that's worth visiting! (don't miss the House of Meg cafe!)

Great spot away from the crowds to see a bit of Hadrian's Wall and a great example of a mile castle. Free entry.

The fort is in reasonable condition but don't expect complete turrets or walls. Layout visible but not a lot to interest youngsters. Very exposed and in windy wet weather its not pleasant. Museum and shop are small and not a lot to occupy youngsters though there are a couple of interactive displays. Coffee shop is very pleasant with nice food and choice of hot and cold drinks. Car park is about 800 meters away uphill on a gravel path so not an easy push for pushchairs.

Fish and chips takeaway
Fast food restaurant
If you're in the area, Brampton Roosters is a must-visit spot that has quickly become a local favorite. With its bustling atmosphere, it's clear that this chippy knows how to draw in the crowds! The fish and chips are particularly noteworthy—served in generous portions and cooked to perfection. Their Pollo Fungi pizza is another highlight; it boasts a delightful balance of toppings without being overly greasy, all while maintaining a satisfying crunch.
Got the Pollo Fungi 10 inch for £7.60. Pizza was really well balanced, good amount of topping, not greasy, and had the right amount crunch.

Been here a few times since moving to the area. The chips are very good, and I've tried both the pizza and the kebab—both solid choices. The salad wasn't the best—nothing wrong with it, just not amazing (but that's probably on me for being someone who actually likes salad 🫣😂). Overall, a decent chippy that’s always busy—usually a good sign! Cash only 💷💷💷
Stephen T — Google review
Ordered a chili beef pizza with extra tomato 🍅 base. And for about the 3rd time I received possibly the worst pizza 🍕 I have ever had. No tomato base at all. 1 jalapeño per slice hardly no beef and cheese. Infact it looked and tasted like it had been warmed up in the oven about 4 times because it was dry and thin and hard. And this only happens on a Friday and Sat night when they are the busiest. And because they are busy they put zero effort into making your order because when I have ordered midweek or a Monday when they are not as busy. Then the pizza is amazing. This will be the last time I will be ordering from here ever again.
DJ E — Google review
I don’t normally like posting things about business. Thought we would try roosters for our takeaway after giving it a wide berth for the last 6-8 month since we felt it had gone down hill and sick of getting home (8 miles away) to find they had missed parts of the order every Friday. Collected our order and decided to check everything was correct to find missing items. Went into the shop to tell them for them to have the cheek to put the wrap in the microwave as it was cold. Then to open the wrap to find someone has put there fingers through the wrap while making it. Ann other customer also got shouted at to return as they had also missed parts of their order.
Shaun S — Google review
Excellent fish and chips, large portion cooked perfectly. Cash only but cash machine across the road so no bother.
Family M — Google review
Just got our take away back to where we're staying to find zero "freshly cut mixed salad" on my shish kebab, and it's like chewing boot leather, doesn't look the best £6 for that (and a pot of mayo). Pizzas were nice though! Cheers Roosters

Absolutely amazing. Best fish and chips that I've had for many years. Mrs loved hers too!! If we had to criticise anything it was just a little more cheese on the chips, Cheese and Gravy. Other than that it was simply stunning!! 2 years on and the consistency it still high level. Awesome.

For day 4, we recommend exploring the east side side of town. Start the day off with Solway Aviation Museum, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to The Cumbrian Antiques Centre. All together, your day would be filled with about 4 hours of non-stop fun.

The Solway Aviation Museum, established in 1961, is a compact museum that showcases exhibits and artifacts related to aviation in the Cumbria region. The museum is run by enthusiastic volunteers who provide guided tours of the exhibits, including a Vulcan bomber and other aircraft. Visitors can get up close to the displays and enjoy an excellent atmosphere while exploring inside displays with plenty to see.
What an amazing flight museum!! First, Thank you very much to Zander for an amazing tour of the Vulcan Bomber. You were so enjoyable to spend time with on the tour. Our ticket to the museum included a tour of the Vulcan Bomber Flight Deck (Cockpit). What an amazing experience to tour this historical aircraft. The staff at the museum was extremely friendly and helpful. The aircraft on exhibit are just amazing. So many different planes to see including the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, Canberra, Fairy Gannet, and many others. The flight decks were open to a number of aircraft. There is a very nice gift shop at the museum as well. We loved our visit!! This is a must see museum for aviation lovers.

This is an absolutely fantastic place to visit. 4 adults. Plenty of aircraft to see especially the Arco Vulcan B.2 XJ823 which we booked to go on board & talk with a volunteer about the plane. Apart from the planes there is a large selection of memorabilia, plenty of information & a small interesting gift shop. Brilliant, friendly well informed volunteers. We will definitely visit again with other friends. Thank you to all involved
Mrs M — Google review
Lovely little gem of a museum. Largely an outside museum with about half a dozen planes to see. Another two main indoor sections, one of which has a few more planes and a lot of memorabilia. Being able to climb inside a Vulcan bomber is worth the admission price alone though. Just breathtaking. The guides really know their stuff and are more than happy to discuss the place and the equipment with you.

We spent part of our day at the Solway Aviation Museum, and it was absolutely worth it! 🛩️ A fantastic collection of aircraft – from Cold War jets to classic cockpits you can get up close to. Great for aviation enthusiasts and curious visitors alike. The exhibits are well-presented, and there’s plenty to explore indoors and outdoors. It’s a hidden gem near Carlisle, perfect for families or anyone fascinated by flying machines. And yes – there's always that one person who has to pretend they're in Top Gun... 😄👨‍✈️ Highly recommend! #SolwayAviationMuseum #Carlisle #PlaneSpotting #HiddenGem

This is one of the best museums I have visited...love Duxford, love elvington, and this is up there tbh... everything is immaculate, the stories on the walls fascinating, the Vulcan tour fascinating, sitting in cockpits on a couple of planes was a dream....i shall come back, again and again and again
Andy P — Google review
Excellent musium, highly recommend, staff extremely helpful and knowledgeable and their all unpaid volunteers. Great selection of aircraft, for the larger ones you can even climb in the cockpit, and its all included in the £7 entry fee, talk about good value for money. There is an indoor building with lots of historical photos, details and gear to see. I would estimate 2 hours to get round everything. For me its worth visiting just to see the size of a vulcan bomber up close, the fact they let you get in the vulcan cockpit was an added bonus, can't imagine many musiums let you do that. If your in the area well worth visiting. P.S. when you arrive, you need to book a free time slot to get in the vulcan cockpit as it only fits 4 people a time plus the musium person, its free but get there early to ensure there is space left.
Bradley M — Google review
A great place to visit, even on a dull, damp day. Easy to find, easy parking, and easy to get around. Smaller than many museums, but the chance to get up close to some great British aircraft, it's run entirely by volunteers, which makes it doubly impressive. For me, the standout experience was the chance to sit in a Vulcan, just incredible. An amazing piece of aviation and cold war history. You can get a coffee/tea/soft drink and snack in the gift shop, and there's a selection of aviation themed items, from models to toys and tee-shirts. I'd encourage everybody to spend some pocket money there and help the museum along. Entry isn't expensive, and running overheads must be high. Will definitely visit again when the Blackburn Beverley arrives ☺️

I visited the Cumbrian Antiques Centre today and was pleased with what I found. The store has a wide selection of high-quality antiques for sale, making it a proper antique shop. The staff, who are knowledgeable, friendly, and approachable, helped me make a deal. Although I didn't have much time to explore today, I plan on returning in the near future due to my positive experience.
Excellent antiques centre in Brampton. Items are arranged sensibly so you're not always scanning lots of different items, which made bit more pleasant to wander around. Staff are very friendly too. A little bit on the pricey side perhaps, but all items looked very good quality. 👍

This was my second stay at Howard Arms. My first trip was in 2018. I can see that a lot of upgrades have been made without losing the historical integrity of the building. This place is a little tucked away piece of history. I love the pub area, and our room was cozy, comfortable, and clean. There was a kind gentleman who gave us our keys and then carried our luggage upstairs. Later, he was helping at the bar and the tables. Highly recommend if you're in the borderlands to stay here. Called in here at the last minute after searching for somewhere to eat. So glad we did. A lovely dining experience. Lively, without being noisy. We could easily have decided to walk on by, as the scaffolding outside being used for an exterior makeover, makes you wonder what it's going to be like inside. Please do not let it put you off. The service was top class from the moment we went in. Friendly, efficient and attentive without being overbearing. The waitress was lovely and very genuine. None of her service was the usual scripted, textbook rubbish. Now on to the real winner on a visit here..... The food. All of the dishes were delicious, well presented filling. I chose the steak pie with a degree of trepidation, as it mentioned "ale" and I am not a huge fan of "steak and ale pies". So glad that I did, based on it being a proper pie with short crust pastry. Wow, what a pie! The afore mentioned pastry was to die for. The meat was cooked perfectly. Huge chunks that just broke away when you put the fork in. Cooked in a thick gravy, with just a slight hint of ale that didn't deter from the flavour of the beef. The presentation was fantastic and everything had so much flavour. A special mention goes out to the carrots which were cooked perfectly for my liking. Soft enough to eat but still solid with all of the carrot taste remaining. As a man of 58 years, that has eaten many pies in my lifetime (far too many), I don't say this light heartedly...... This is THE nicest pie that I have EVER had.

if you want to go here i advise you not to wear a hat, i was retiring to my quarters when the biggest bird i have ever seen (not counting my ex wife) swooped into my window and stole my fathers fedora right off my head, exposing my bald head to the world and any unfortunate passers by. naturally I had no other option than to chase the bird, ending in me grazing my knee and, due to leaving my keys in the hotel room, getting locked out and having to sleep outside a Tesco. 4/5 not the worst holiday I've been on.

Sunday lunch yesterday. Very pleasant staff and surroundings. Unfortunately went down hill due to length of waiting. Food was lukewarm, give them credit as we asked just to heat it up but they brought us a replacement meal. Waited 40 minutes for dessert which never came. Paid the bill and left. Waitress said delay in service was because of two birthday parties in. They should have employed more staff if they knew how busy it was going to be. Has put us off going back. Charles Carter
