Lookouts
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a stunning hermitage located on an islet connected to the mainland by a narrow rocky path. The site offers breathtaking panoramic views and is a perfect spot for hiking and capturing impressive natural landscapes. Access to the hermitage involves descending steep terrain and climbing 240 steps, so it's recommended to take your time and arrive early, especially during high season when access is limited to 1500 people per day.
At first, the drive down didn’t convince me it was worth it—but this spot absolutely deserves a place on your list. The setting is incredible, almost surreal, making even the most dramatic Game of Thrones scenes feel tame in comparison. We caught it right at sunset, and the views were unforgettable. Fair warning: the hill is steeper than it looks, so be ready to give your calves a workout.
Patrick F — Google review
Gaztelugatxe is super impressive and totally worth seeing. If you want to walk down and up the stairs to the chapel, you’ll need a ticket – and those go fast. I didn’t book in advance and couldn’t go down, which was a bit annoying. The staff weren’t exactly friendly either, lots of people were turned away. But the good news: you can still get amazing views without a ticket, either from the official platform or, even better, a bit further down the road where there’s a parking spot with an awesome view.
AnotherPerspective — Google review
Although this place is trendy, I highly recommend visiting it. The views are incredible, and the mountains are filled with enchantment, making for a fantastic hike. However, it's important to note that access is not easy, as there are several stairs and steep hills. On weekdays, entry is free, but you will need tickets for weekends.
Mayra R — Google review
Gaztelugatxe was by far the most impressive experience of my trip through the Basque Country. Come rain or shine, the sea crashing against the rocks, the path across the bridge and up the stairs to the chapel. One of the few tourist hotspots that you can still enjoy to some extent. The small effort required to walk to the hermitage itself enhances the experience. The registration requirement and the associated access restrictions add to this. Unfortunately the chapel is not permanently open. Please don't let the weather dictate your trip here! Even in rain, wind and storm (perhaps especially then) this place exudes a unique aura.
Martin K — Google review
A bit overrated tbh - careful on the way down - long and steep, can be slippery when the fog comes down. U need to walk all the way down to sea level and then all the way up to the church - plus the same on the way back.. it‘s a nice place to visit but not a „must see or do“
Georg D — Google review
Nice scenic spot from game of thrones. If you come early before they open you don’t have to pay for entry. Need to park a little way out but worth the hike and view even with rain
Pirashan R — Google review
I highly recommend visiting Gaztelugatxe, but do note that at least during high season you must buy a (free) ticket long in advance. My wife and I couldn’t get to the hermit because we didn’t learn of this step during our early planning, and by the time we realized we needed tickets, they were not available for the next six weeks. At the site, the staff told us that we might get lucky by refreshing the ticket website on the hour (11 o’clock, 12 o’clock, etc.), but I wouldn’t rely on that. If you can’t get tickets, you still have the chance of getting to a vista point with good views.
Marcelo C — Google review
Here’s the golden tip if everything looks booked (which is basically all summer long). Wait until 5:00 PM on the same day of your visit, then refresh the entradas reservation page. The system updates and you’ll often see 5–6 new spots pop up from no-shows. We scored 3 tickets at 5:02 PM this way after the site had been showing “fully booked” all day. Bring good sneakers and plenty of water — this is real hiking, not just a casual stroll!

Public beach
Playa de Aritzatxu in Bermeo is a charming little gem that offers a unique experience away from the bustling tourist spots. While it may not boast extensive sandy shores, this hidden beach is adored by locals for its picturesque setting and serene atmosphere. Nestled next to a cemetery, it adds an intriguing twist to your visit, making it feel both eerie and enchanting.
Beautiful place ,nice beach and good walking around .

Gorgeous beach. We had a great time although no tourists which we liked. Sea was bonkers lots of big waves!
Jeanette A — Google review
Beautiful hidden small beach area. From what I saw it was mostly locals in the area.
Gabriel L — Google review
Cool secret little spot. Not much of a beach but still very interesting to check out. Is mostly a locals spot but it has recently been improved with some interesting paths. It is next to a cemetery which makes it creepy and novel at the same time. There is also a large park above it perfect for a picnic or a stroll with your dog. This area of Bermeo isn't visited much by tourist as they normally focus on the harbor, the pier, and all of the bars and restaurants in that area. However, there is a cool little bar on that tiny spec of a "beach" called Aritzatxu. Also, if you are into biking challenges you can bike to the place that is famous because game of thrones was filmed there, The Wall. It's about an hour's bike ride to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, where the wall is. As you can imagine it's an amazing sight. Don't worry there is also a restaurant and bar close by where you can have a couple of beers, some rotisserie chicken, or some ribs or something else before you hop back on your bike. Overall a great way to explore the Basque Country and see some beautiful places.
M C — Google review
This is a small hidden beach popular with locals with virtually no sand at high tide. It has a small island with a boardwalk accessible during low tide. There is a small Cafe-bar on location and access is through a paved trail pedestrian only walkway. Despite its small size, it is very popular with families and small children. Beach is well protected from big surf.
Tony D — Google review
Not easy to find. Park near the cemetary and walk down to the small but unique beach. Best around low tide. Cafe, when open, is a plus.
Michael E — Google review
Perfect small beach with everything you need. Toilets showers and small shop
Greta L — Google review
Small, sheltered, pleasant beach. Rocks and sand. There was a lifeguard on duty from 11 am. Shower and a cafe.

Basque restaurant
Nestled in the picturesque Lamera Park, Restaurante Casino Bermeo is a charming white-tablecloth establishment that beautifully marries history with culinary excellence. Housed in a stunning building reminiscent of a French chateau, this restaurant was originally constructed in 1894 by the renowned architect Severino de Achucarro as a social hub for Bermeo's elite. Today, it offers an inviting atmosphere adorned with art and chandeliers, making it perfect for family gatherings or special occasions.
The food was delicious, most servers were pleasant, and the setting was superb!!!

We ate lunch here on 17/10/17. The food was beautifully cooked and service efficient. The waiter was a helpful and charming young man and explained all the dishes in his best English. My husband had a local starter of broad bean stew and I a puff pastry and fish vol au vent, both delicious. We had fish (merlu) fresh and delicious, with potatoes, for main courses. Puddings were local specialities and also very good. The restaurant is elegant and impressive yet prices were extremely reasonable. Will definitely go again, next time we are in the area.

(Translated by Google) It's not every day you can eat a set menu for €17 in such an iconic building. For starters, we chose the puff pastry filled with seafood cream and the cod scramble (both delicious). For main courses, we had roosterfish, escalopes, and anchovies (the fish was very fresh). For dessert, we had cheesecake and rice pudding (both homemade). We chose the right restaurant, as the service was attentive and professional. A place to eat calmly and without rushing. Laida is a stunning beach located in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, near the mouth of the Mundaka Estuary in northern Spain. With its one-kilometer-long golden sandy stretch and picturesque view of Izaro Island, it offers a perfect setting for various activities such as surfing, canoeing, and sailing. The beach is ideal for families with small kids due to its calm waters during low tide.
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Parking is a nightmare if you don't get there early. But doesn't matter this beach is wonderful all year round. I try to make a point of coming here on New year's day for a pintxo. Never ever dissapoints. Laida will always have a special place in my heart.

As we ended our drive on the biscaye cost we stopped at this beach. This is a very nice beach, especially if you have small kids. In low tide, the beach is huge with different areas to swim, with no waves or very small waves on ocean side and fairly flat so after walking a 1000 feet will still be mid waist. There is a lot of parking options available and couple restaurants. You can rent kayak, paddle boards but no umbrellas or chair

Artza is a local restaurant in Bermeo, Province of Vizcaya, Spain that offers an authentic Spanish dining experience. The restaurant has a local flavor and provides generous portions of delicious food at reasonable prices. While the staff may not speak English fluently, they are accommodating and helpful in guiding diners through the menu. Visitors have praised the quality of the fish dishes and marmitaco, highlighting the authenticity and value for money offered by Artza.
Even if you do not speak Spanish, this place is worth it! Just get Google translate out, it’s 2024. Get the meal of the day, it’s 13 euro for 3 courses. Every dish was amazing and you leave full. If you are looking for a full immersion Basque cultural experience, this is it. Dive in and enjoy.

A nice local restaurant, unfortunately no one speak English, only Spanish. So we couldn't understand each other well, the boss showed us some food samples and we chosen one of them. I think that's from the set, with a drink, two main course, coffee and a desert. The food tasted good and portion was too big that we couldn't finished the whole set. Therefore we left the desert and coffee, the set is really worth the money.
Mee L — Google review
Great service, simple but delicious food in copious portions, all together great value for money. One of the best restaurants we've eaten at during our 2 week trip across the region, and we are rather demanding foodies. 😀
Roni — Google review
Came here encouraged by the reviews. I'm not mentioning the aesthetics of the place, because they are of little meaning for me. The menu of the day was 14€ and the portions were huge. (Is this what attracts all the people here?) We were given: - stale bread, - "paella" with chicken, which meant cooked rice with unseasoned chicken, close to no veggies or sauce, - marmitako de bonito (tuna) - can't say much because it was the first time I had the dish, but it was a rather bland tomato-pepper soup with potatoes and some tuna, - raya a la gallega - unsalted boiled fish with some olive oil and dry pepper powder - edible after adding some lemon from the other fish dish, but nothing special, - lenguado rebojado - fish covered in a thick fried egg coating, super fatty and lacking spices and any flavor balance, We ended up leaving most of the food behind and gave up on desserts. I imagine this is what food must have tasted like before spices became widely available in the middle ages and it certainly does not belong in a restaurant of any kind.

(Translated by Google) We saw the sign for this Rte, walking through Bermeo, and we thought that we could eat well, and fresh fish of the day, being a fishermen's brotherhood, nothing could be further from the truth. The restaurant is in the port area, and you have to walk like through a polygon, until you arrive, you even think that you have gotten lost, and there can't be any restaurant there, there is the Red Cross post, and a small pump of Repsol fuel, next to some fuel tanks. You arrive at the San Pedro Jatetxea Fishermen's Guild Restaurant on the port dock, in front of Bermeo. Menu of fresh fish, but too expensive for the amount they bring, Bad Quantity-Price Relationship, and quite high prices, to be where it is. I attach photos of our food, in this restaurant, so to speak, and on our account. We didn't have dessert, we asked for the bill, we paid and left, after telling the waiter, that the high prices they had seemed normal for the amount of food they served, and he limited himself to telling us that his boss was there, and That if we wanted to talk to him, he would call him, we told him no, that we were on vacation, and we didn't want problems of any kind, that we would comment on it on social networks so that everyone world found out, and that he was an errand and couldn't do anything. Not at all recommendable!!!! Due to location, and poor quantity-price ratio!!! Nada Recomendable!!!! Por ubicacion,y mala relaccion Cantidad-Precio!!!

Premium products, good cuisine, but definitely not worth de high prices: 93€ for two starters and one main course, two deserts and two drinks... in the middle of nowhere. Also, for some reason we felt a little uncomfortable, the atmosphere is kind of stiff.
Adri L — Google review
Simply amazing! The best chuletón I've ever had in my life. Can't explain more, you'll have to try it to understand. I also had the merluza, the fish was very fresh and perfectly seasoned and beautifully cooked, flaky and tender. Very friendly and attentive service, gorgeous views, charming decor. We arrived early without reservations, and they tried their best to seat us (kindness and luck at lunchtime on Sunday). If you plan to go, be sure to make reservations! Will be back for sure. Quality/price ratio was amazing. About 84€ for the both of us: Chuletón (900g) Merluza Hojaldre de puerro Cuajada 2 x cortados Copa de vino tinto Copa de vino blanco Botella de agua Thank you, Almiketxu!

Small and interesting museum on the history of the fishing activity in the village. You need a little less than an hour for the visit. The information is in Basque and Spanish, and some in English. You can borrow a book with extra information in English. It would be advisable to invest in an audio guide and add English and French options. btw. Very clean toilets, it's always something to be grateful for.

It was free to visit on Saturday. Nice little museum but a few opportunities to improve I would say. Not all the exhibits have an explanation- you don’t always know what you’re looking at. A key animation is in Spanish only, though they do have typewritten sheets in English with the script, it’s not quite the same. There is a good film showing fishing practices but is long and duplicative- it needs to be edited down. Finally, it could do with some more exhibits/ content, how clothing has changed, simple explanation of different types of fishing for different catches, the changing fortunes and income of fishermen, technology evolution etc. Nice visit but could be better.

Torre de Ercilla, also known as the Ercilla Tower, is a historic gem in Bermeo. Dating back to the 15th century, it stands as the oldest building in the town and is the sole survivor of 30 original defensive and residential towers. Once a family home, this tower holds great significance as it was declared a national monument in 1944.

It was built at the end of the 15th century and although its structure has some defensive elements, its character was more residential. The tower has an irregular plan with six sides and a six-sided roof. Its load-bearing side walls denote the fortified character of the building. The main façade is made of very smooth sandstone ashlar, as is the other side, although this one is more irregular. The others are made of masonry. In 1944 it was declared a monument, and three years later the Provincial Council of Bizkaia acquired it. After restoring it, since 1948, it has been the headquarters of the Fisherman's Museum. This was built because its predecessor, the Santa María de la Tala church, due to a very poor state of conservation, had to be demolished, and due to the large number of faithful from Bermeo the other two churches could not accommodate them all. Work began in 1823 and although they finished in 1858 they did not inaugurate it until 1866, even so it was not completed inside or out in the rush they had to replace the old church of La Tala. For example, the tower was completed in 1899. Andeko bistro is a popular eatery located in Motico village, which is a must-visit for seafood lovers. It offers a range of delicious dishes, with their marmitako and cod being highly recommended. The bar provides a great atmosphere and serves excellent pintxos, particularly the ones made with cod. The prices are reasonable, and the staff is known to be friendly and trustworthy.
Stopped by here for quick seafood lunch after a hike to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Brother loved it. Me not as much. Still, food was good, prices were fair, staff was more than friendly and trusting. Would come back!

We went there because of the reviews (after discovering that bus to Gaztelgatxe were randomly canceled) and it was disappointing. The waiter was visibly displeased to see tourists entering and ordering foods. The pintxos were one of the worst we had during our Basque's trip and were expensive (2€20 without any price tag anywhere). Avoid it if you aren't local

It consists of a tower with an access door and a fragment of wall canvas on both sides of it. Element rigged in stone, mostly worked in masonry although in some points ashlars are observed. The door opens through a pointed arch on one side and a segmental arch on the other. It has some loopholes in the upper part of the portal, as well as a recently redone crenellation. It is the only door that exists of the seven that originally existed. The door is called that because it is the one that leads to the Hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The door is from the 14th century, above the lowered arch there is a niche with the image of Saint John. According to a legend, Saint John the Baptist arrived in three steps from the port of Bermeo to the Hermitage of Gaztelugatxe. Each step left a mark, the first one they say can be seen under the arch of the San Juan portal, I did not see it, nor did I know about this detail to look more in depth  The photos are from September 2020.

Located near Lamera Park and the old port, this one-floor church features a choir and is known for its beauty and rich history.

T-KIMUA is a small and charming place located in the historic center of Bermeo. It offers a wide variety of pastries, pasta assortments, and different teas that can be purchased in bulk. The establishment is known for its friendly staff and good quality breakfast options at an excellent value for money. Customers can enjoy a delightful breakfast experience with spectacular sweet options such as red fruit jam and a variety of infusions.
A tiny cafe, excellent place for breakfast. The dishes are made of unprocessed, natural ingredients. There is a good selection of very good coffee and many kinds of tea. Hot chocolate is made of basic ingredients: pure cacao, water, and milk, so if you ask for your hot chocolate yo be sugar free, it will be. You can also buy quality tea and chocolate, as well as bread and cake there. The place is very small, however, so it might be hard to get a table. It's possible to order breakfast take away.

We had breakfast at this place and were quite satisfied. The café offers a good variety of drinks – tea, coffee, and herbal beverages – as well as a wide selection of breakfast options, including French omelets with various toppings, sandwiches, and tostadas. Service was reasonably quick. The indoor seating is limited with about five tables, and the terrace has around six tables, making it a cozy spot. For a small town, this was the best breakfast option we found, and we really enjoyed it.

First time breakfast at T-kimua. Coffee was excellent. Ham and cheese toastie was so good and the french toast with jam was also really good. Last but definitely not least is the amazing cheesecake. Service was fast and staff are so friendly. It was my partners birthday and the cheesecake came complete with candles and happy birthday sung by the two lovely ladies serving.

I arrived at IKAI Hanburgesak around 3:30 pm and discovered that the kitchen was already closed. However, they provided pintxos and sandwiches as an alternative. The food had a delicious flavor and came at a competitive price. I highly recommend this restaurant, as their steaks (both beef and pork) were incredibly tasty and the cook was very friendly. Moreover, they offered big burgers that were reasonably priced, accompanied by a staff that was welcoming and helpful.

Restaurant
Akelarre Taberna is a highly recommended restaurant located in the central area of Bermeo. It offers an extensive menu with vegetarian options and a daily menu for 12 euros during lunchtime. The restaurant provides good quality food at an ideal price, with a variety of 15 well-prepared dishes on weekdays. Reservations are not available on weekdays, but the service is quick, and the homemade desserts are excellent.
THIS IS THE TYPE OF PLACE I LIKE! The food was great, fish was very very fresh, portions were huge and the prices were low. The staff were super attendant and helpfull. This is not fine dining, but it is a great restaurant. 11/10. Btw the menu is way bigger than what you can see on google. We spend 25 pr person and got extremely full.

Nice and friendly local restaurant. Our waitress spoke good English and even provided a menu in English. Be prepared for large portions here. We just had a main course each: the escalope of veal and the hake in a green sauce. Both were OK, although the green sauce wasn't special. Nice rioja wine to wash it down!
John D — Google review
The food in general was good, we liked it. Except the escalope could be better. Service was long.

Ordered several appetizers and fish of the day for four of us to share. We had plenty of food which was all excellent. Our tour guide dropped us here and said it was very good, he wasn't wrong. Loved our experience.

I am disappointed! Went there based on reviews and wandered after who writes them. It was true that the service is timely and adequate, but the food…. Is a different story. I ordered a tuna steak in salsa as suggested by server and supposed to be done with local flavor. What I’ve got was a dry large peace of tuna covered with unpalatable tomato paste from the can. Unacceptable!
Rimma V — Google review
This is the place for foodies and hungry people. You’re hungry and looking for some cheap quick grub? Go here. You’re a foodie and need a reminder of what bad food is? This your place. The 15 Euros you pay for a 1st course, 2nd course, dessert, bread, wine and coffee is worth the (re) education. A big plus for the surprisingly efficient and pleasant service, and the authentic atmosphere.

Bar & grill
Bar Lamera is a delightful spot for those seeking tasty bites, even if vegetarian options are somewhat limited. Diners can enjoy a fresh salad, satisfying sandwiches, and crispy French fries—an off-menu treat that the staff happily accommodated upon request. The food is not only delicious but also served promptly, making it a great choice for a quick meal.
Good food, in good time served. Staff do not speak English what makes difficult to make the order. On the photo cheecks in sauce with fried potatos.

While the food was OK we did not appreciate being kicked out of the table when we hadn't finished our drinks because "other people need to eat". We were not sitting for a long time, we finished dessert and while one of us went to the toilet and the other was finishing their drink the staff came and started setting the table for new customers while one of us still finishing their drink. We were about to leave. Unnecessary, rude. Do not recommend.
Jpicka — Google review
You are forced to leave your table (after you had a meal and a drink) but when your glass is still half full. “You can drink the rest at the bar because I have new customers that want to eat” the waiter said. We had only just finished our meal. Very, very rude people!
Roel ? — Google review
This was the only restaurant we found open in this village on a Monday. Despite the great price, we should have kept walking. The food was absolutely terrible: mixed salade with unripe tomatoes, canned tuna and a few sad pieces of lettuce. Saumon cooked from frozen for much too long making it dry and fishy. Profiteroles that were just deep fried, soggy doughnut balls with industrial whipped cream. Such a shame to eat bad food in a part of the world that is known for it's quality products and cuisine.
Sara B — Google review
Goddamn I haven't eaten so bad in years, I can't even remember honestly. Ham croquettes were absolutely tasteless, calamari worse than the frozen ones that I can find at my local supermarket for less than €3 (they didn't even serve it with sauce), and the "ham, egg, fries plate" was the least creative dish I've ever seen. Literally just a few slices of ham, 2 fried eggs and bland fries... Unless you're starving and have no other options, please don't eat here. The beer is ok though so just skip the meals and take a few beers.
Nicolas M — Google review

There aren't many vegeterian options, but we had a salad, a sandwitch and french fries (the french fries were not in the menu, but we saw it as a side dish on another table and asked for it, they agreed immediately). It was all delicious! One of the best salads I have had in Spain :)
