Outdoor Activities
Affenberg Landskron is a popular family-friendly monkey park in Villach, Austria. Visitors can enjoy barrier-free guided tours through macaque enclosures and book interactive activities. The park offers an engaging experience for families, with tours lasting about 30 minutes to see the monkeys in their habitat. While visitors cannot touch the monkeys, they can walk among them and enjoy the playground, food, and drinks available on-site. Paid parking is available at the hill entrance.
Monkey Park - Tour in English/German. Cost for a family of 2+2 is about 57 euros. The tour is about 40 minutes, charming and very interesting. A nice guide accompanies the group at 4 stopping points and explains and asks questions about the monkeys. All the monkeys are Japanese macaques. A very interesting and beautiful tour. 108 monkeys live there in a huge and tidy park. Visits are from April to November only.
Sharon F — Google review
Very beautiful location for this beautiful creatures. They have around 150 monkeys which wander freely around the place looking happy in their habitat. The tour lasts around 40 minutes and you can get inside only with a guide. The ticket costs 17 euros per person and 13 for disabled. It was really worth it. We even got a paper written in our language about the monkeys and yhe whole place and the guide was translating everything in english. The place is owned by a private owner and they take great care of the monkeys.
Silvia B — Google review
There is a steep drive up to the parking area and a short walk to the entrance. The area is very well maintained, the monkeys are happy and healthy and are encouraged to live as they would in the wild. We arrived around 11, and only had to wait around 30 minutes for the next tour. There is plenty of room in the shade, and an opportunity to get some food and drink. There are tours in German and English, the guide translates all the information. There were quite a few children and the gravel path was noisy at times, but we could still hear the information well!
Laura F — Google review
Cute little monkey park up in the hills, we had to wait a bit to enter as you couldn't buy tickets in advance but at least there was a nice playground for the kids to enjoy and a cafe/shop for food and drinks while you wait. The downside is that the tour claims to be bilingual but our guide spoke mostly in German and translated maybe 20 percent of the information to English, mostly just saying "ok let's go to our next stop" even when we talked to him about it he continued with saying the most interesting things only in german. To get up the hill and park your car you also have to pay an additional 5.50€ which felt a bit cheeky. The monkeys themselves are cool and it's a nice and fresh stroll through the forest.
Tommy O — Google review
Highly priced tour (adult 17 Euros). Japanese monkeys in controlled environment. They are fed by the park and are not wild in any way. I want my money back. Not worth at all.
Kamran ( — Google review
Monkey tour was a highlight of the day offering the chance to see those amazing animals in almost their natural habitat. The guide was very kind to offer information in both languages, German and English.
Olga K — Google review
absolutely worth a visit! Even in Summer, the area is quite pleasant to visit thanks to the tall trees. The tours are multi-lingual and super interesting! It was my second time there and I still liked it a lot! Amazing team, great experience.
Wolf L — Google review
Amazing experience! It is definitely worth seeing. Monkey can walk around you, the tour guys tells nice stories. There is a little free of charge car park (about 20 minutes walking up), and a spacious car parks on the top.

Adler Arena Burg Landskron is a seasonal arena located at the medieval castle ruins of Burg Landskron, nestled between Villach and the Ossiacher See. The arena offers a captivating 40-minute spectacle featuring falconer demonstrations with endangered birds of prey. Visitors can witness a breathtaking flight show and learn about the habits of these special animals up close in an open-air setting. The show combines flying birds with engaging narratives about their wildlife, presented in both German and English.
Nice birds of prey area. Many birds descriptions. Nice show in German and English. Duration is approx 1.5h
Denis C — Google review
A real highlight! The view from the castle over Villach, with the Karawanken and Carnic Alps in the background, is absolutely stunning. The bird of prey show deserves top marks – it offers breathtaking insights into the behavior of raptors and owls, seen up close like nowhere else. The commentary was perfect: informative, engaging, and delivered with real passion for the animals. We’ll definitely be coming back!
Michael V — Google review
The show is amazing and it's cool to learn all the facts about the birds. Side note: it's hard to follow it in English. They also do amazing work in the region for wounded birds etc. We have visited it last year and this year.
Patricia — Google review
The Landskron castle and the view from the top are absolutely stunning! You get a fantastic panorama of the nearby city and the surrounding landscape. Definitely worth the climb. The climb is really steep but luckily there is a parking spot at the top for more accessibility for people with a disability. The falconry show is super fun to watch and great for both adults and kids. It’s done in both German and English, which makes it accessible to many visitors. The birds look very healthy and well cared for, and they seem to genuinely enjoy participating in the show. Afterward, you can even take a picture with one of the birds. There are also nice food facilities at the castle, which is perfect if you want to relax after the show. One thing that could be improved is the living space for the birds in the cages. While the birds seem healthy and well-fed, the enclosures are a bit bare mostly gravel with no plants or enrichment. There also aren’t many perches, though each bird does have a comfortable nest. Overall, a great experience with breathtaking views, a memorable show, and clear care for the animals but with some room to make the bird enclosures a bit more stimulating.
Jack M — Google review
An international and inclusive bird show (some peak time shows have a translator for english and Italian). Andreas (presenter) is enthusiastic and adds comedy to the sometimes unpredictable birds. A golden eagle had returned from hunting and the team adapted the show to lure the eagle down with simulated prey.
Richard A — Google review
An unforgettable experience! The birds are breathtaking, and the feeling when they fly right above you is simply magical. The trainers show so much love and respect for them, and the beautiful surroundings make it even more special. A memory to cherish! The birds live in a clean and well-kept environment and get to fly freely. come at least half an hour before the show to see the other birds up close. Would love more english for better understanding and learning!
Miljenka S — Google review
Amazing experience! It is definitely worth seeing. The show is fantastic and takes about an hour. There is a little free of charge park (about 20 minutes walking), and a big car parks on the top.
Paulina — Google review
Insanely awesome bird show. They tell you from the outset that each show is unscripted, and true to form an absent eagle spontaneously returned after a few days away to steal the show (and a large fox carcass). Genuinely an experience to never be forgotten and worth every cent. Narrator was truly passionate and a talented public speaker. Also had a fun time in the castle as well.

Landskron Castle, a historic hilltop fortress in Villach, Austria, has been home to various noble families from the 14th to the 17th century. Although destroyed by fire in 1812, it remains a top attraction with its medieval walls drawing many visitors for its scenic ascent and breathtaking views.
Great location close to Villach with lots of attractions. You may book a session with eagles on your wedding day. This is a real castle, a fantastic background for photos. Stunning views on each side. Every couple gets to cut their cake with a medieval sword. There is a beautiful Chapel located within the castle, great for a romantic ceremony. As a photographer I can recommend this location as one of favourites.
Marta P — Google review
You can't understand the lady who is speaking in English, actually translating the other one. But she's adorable :) the show itself is well handled and you can see they treat those animals with kindness. The negative thing is coffee (really bad) in the restaurant near the entrance, expensive souvenirs (7€ for a magnet) and the parking is way down the road so you have to walk UP HILL for 10min to reach the castle. Overall, great to see in person those magnificent birds of pray. We were amazed.
Kristina S — Google review
Breathtaking atmosphere and view.. problem with my visit was that we were a big group with optimized price and therefore the restaurant experience seems to suffer .. the plates were quite plain with good but not exceptional taste and the people were quite harsh - some of the statements even unfriendly.. I guess if it would have been a dinner for two with less monetary restrictions the whole experience would have been mega..
Evi N — Google review
Found this gem while driving from Austria to Italy. We almost got lost after getting off the highway, but once we got our bearings, it was a breeze. Once there, if available, you can park right up to the castle. Otherwise, just walk up the steep hill (15 minutes). The grounds are good enough, but the birds of pray displays and demonstration were a definitely 10/10!. Food around the place was ok, but the people working everywhere were so nice. A must-stop to see!!!

Eagle show it was brilliant....german and english must do. Ideal for families. Food very good.
Maxwell W — Google review
Nice one day family trip. The bird show is something special, but it is good to know german, because there is not enough english speak. Beware of summer heat, you can get fried up in the arena. It is ynder open sky. No roof or shadow at all. If you are regarding that it's a interesting place with astonishing view.
Aljosa T — Google review
Parking is 2,5 Euros per day and you can see beautiful old castle and lovely Affenberge. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Andrea P — Google review
The food was delicious at the restaurant and the views were incredible.More than worth it to venture out and go see. The drive just to get to the castle is worth just taking the trip. There ia parking at the very top of the mountain so your only option isn't just at the very bottom. Its worth checking out. If you do decide to park at the bottom. Its quite the journey making it up that steep graded road about 1/2 Km to the top.

The Burgherrenrunde is a delightful family-friendly hike along well-maintained forest paths near the Ossiacher Tauern. Nestled by the serene shores of Lake Ossiach, ZIS Lauritsch is a charming guesthouse that offers a laid-back atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Guests can enjoy cozy accommodations and indulge in delicious meals at the rustic on-site restaurant, which boasts an impressive menu with plenty of options. Just remember to arrive before 15:00 or after 17:30 to avoid limited choices! The friendly staff are always ready to accommodate special requests, ensuring a delightful dining experience.
This is the only dog beach we could find in the area and it was great. Parking is free and has plenty of spaces, the entry was 14 euro for 2 people and 2 dogs and you can also rent umbrellas. The lawn is big, with several trees for shade and dogs must be on leash ( without - in water). The entry in the water is not too wide, at some point were 3 dogs in the water and more than 10 people so I had to wait 😁 But a really nice place overall!
Alexandra C — Google review
This restaurant/beach is really nice. Food is really good and they offer a wide variety. Just be on time because between 15:00 and 17:30 there is only a limited menu. The staff is nice, and they are flexible for special wishes, like a just-one-scoop-of-ice-cream-coup-denmark or the same thing with a raspberry cup. They were really nice and helpful. The beach is cool, as it is one of the few places where dogs are allowed, they have a separate beach entry for dogs. It was nice and clean. And I can imagine in late summer that it could be quiet nice with all the fruit trees around.

Dobratsch Nature Park is a picturesque mountain preserve that offers ample opportunities for hiking, cycling and winter sports. The park boasts an alpine garden and charming rustic inns. Visitors can enjoy stunning views over Carinthia, especially during winter when the valley is often foggy while up here it's sunny! There are plenty of trails available for walking, skiing or sledging.
As usual, a great hiking trip. That day it was windy on top, and some snow. All the rest of the track is challenging and pleasant, with a sunny day (21 °C). And yes, near the parking lot, the restaurant has great food. Enjoy!

A great place for the whole family to visit. I advise you to take care of the shoes. We reached the top by Alpenstrasse by car with stops at the marked places. We took photos and drove on. At the final 11 stop, we regained our strength after having a good meal in an excellent restaurant. We could not climb to the top, although a 5-year-old child calmly endured the path. We reached the observation deck only. But it was painful for the dog to walk on the gravel. I even had to carry her back in my arms, she injured her paw. But in general, I strongly advise you to visit the place.

When you love special gardens and you’re not afraid of heights ;-) this is a beautiful place to visit when the weather is nice. It’s only open 3 months of the year. June, July and August. I would drive to the top, early as you can spend the whole day easily there with hiking…. Sitting in the restaurant and visiting the Alpine garden. Also the sky bridge is amazing. Below some pictures we took yesterday. Sadly we drove up late (2 pm) and had not enough time for a hike on the top which was a shame. So my advice: start at 10 am and enjoy the whole day!

One of the best hikes I've ever done. The views were spectacular and it wasnt too hot. (Begining of September). The entry was slightly pricey at 18.50, but the different hikes inside add up to the price. Very beautiful and great hiking experience!

The views here are spectacular. Access is easy via the Villacher Alpenstraße with many parking spots, information and of course the Rote Wand viewing platform. We went on the Jägersteig path starting from the parking place at the end of the Straße. There are impressive rock formations and panoramic views along this path. You don't want to be afraid of heights!

Relief von Kärnten is a large-scale relief model of Carinthia located in Schillerpark, just south of the old town. Covering an area of 182 square meters, this impressive mockup provides a detailed representation of the province and its surrounding areas. Recently updated with a multimedia show, it offers visitors a 4D experience showcasing the region's geography and history.
This was an unexpected gem. Both my husband and I like looking at maps and know the area of Kaernten quite well. It was fascinating to get a birds eye view and to see the variety of terrain - we spent a lot longer there than we had expected. We had free entry with the Kaernten card but would have been happy even if we had had to pay. The photos on display of towns as they were was also very interesting especially when some of them have not changed substantially since the photos were taken.
Nicola M — Google review
Really nice place to have an overview of whole Kärnten. I suggest to see some of the media videos, they are extremely informative. The 3D flight, new from 2025, is nice. But, at least for me, I e had to stop after some minutes because I've had the symptoms of motion illness. Anyway, my son was 'flying' for quite a while without anything. I suggest to visit it.
Luca M — Google review
I really really like it. Highly recommended. Ask for the video if it's not on. They have it both in German and English. Don't know about other languages.

Jakov — Google review
This place has potential. They have taken a quite old map, and added in a big multimedia light show. The ticket office was great in changing the language to English for us as we were the only people there. The media show was interesting, with useful information about the region. However, this is more suited to you get audiences. For a map need like me (and probably some of my friends) it would have been good to just have some time with the lights on so I could just study the map in fine detail, looking at all the places I'd been and still as planning to go to. There just wasn't any time of lights on, no show playing. The shows just went one to the next.

Excellent mockup (huge) of Carinthia with the surrounding areas. They have updated the experience with multimedia show, so its a kind of 4d experience now. Hope they come asap with an english version of the show and overall info material as well and ... seems to be a general "problem" in the city of Villach ... this POI/museum is closed on Sundays (as others) ...

The Parish Church of St. Jacob, located in Villach, Austria, is a captivating late Gothic structure that stands as the focal point of the old town. The church boasts stunning architecture and intricate details dating back to the 14th century. Visitors can admire frescoes, a richly decorated ceiling, and a rococo altar inside.
Stunning building, from the outside as well as inside!

The most important place of worship in Villach. Externally I can definitely say that it is one of the most beautiful buildings you can find in the city, internally it's not much but it is still worth a visit! Next to it there is the Bell Tower, of which you can reach the top and enjoy a discrete view of the city (that requires a small charge though)

Beautiful church in the Old Town of Villach. Hard to miss if you are in town
J — Google review
I was up and out early this morning and, in exploring the town at dawn, I saw the elegant old St. Jakob's Cathedral, right in the City-Center. It was so early that I didn't think it would be open, so when I tried the door and it opened, it was a lovely surprise to hear the fabulous old organ being played in the pre-dawn stillness. The organist was practicing and I came in and stood and let that rich music just flow over me and soak in. It seemed almost holy to hear this. I could not stay long and didn't even think about climbing the bell tower, but it didn't matter. I had already been blessed and it was time to hurry back to the hotel for breakfast. There is ample off-street parking in the property rear and along the side, but the town is small and walking anywhere is easiest

Attended the Villach Beer Festival on the first day. Church service was the kickoff to the festivities for the entire week. Everyone was there, all dressed in the traditional clothing.

Very nice old church - main church of the Villach. From the stairways near the church you can see very beautiful views of the city center with mountains on the background.

The Stadthauptpfarrkirche in Villach, Austria, is a historical gem with stunning Gothic architecture and intricate details. Dating back to the 14th century, it has survived fires and renovations, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and art lovers. The tower offers a breathtaking view of Villach, and a fun fact: there is a little kitchen at the top, possibly used to cook pigeons as they still nest there today. The price to visit this attraction is 3 Eur per person. Enjoy the view

Really liked the the temprary expedition "How wars end". The permanent exhibition was nice but !no English translation! It is as if they don't want foreigners to visit. Additionaly, no Slovenian translation which shows they have no respect for the Slovenian minority at the bilingual zone.

Manages to fit a lot in. Great building and location. The staff are very helpful. Have visited a few times now and each time there has been a different special exhibit alongside the local history. This time was history of beer and it's local relevance. A great amount of information presented in an easy to understand way and even had a full English translation available. Look forward to seeing what's in next spring.

The Stadtpfarrturm Villach is a Roman Catholic church located on the main square in Villach, with a history dating back to the 1100s. Despite enduring fires and other incidents, it boasts the tallest bell tower in Carinthia and features a Romanesque style. The interior is adorned with an ornate pink/white ceiling, impressive paintings, and an opulent altar.
I say it’s really worth it for €5 per person. Nice panoramic view of the whole town from top . 10 levels , total of 230++ steps

(Translated by Google) Villach viewed from above... After climbing "a few steps" and a narrow spiral staircase with traffic lights every 4 minutes, you reach the highest vantage point in the city. There is a good all-round view of Carinthia's (beautiful - secret) capital and the surrounding area. 😉 With the Kärnten Card, the view from the parish tower is even “free”. It's definitely worth a visit! 👍🏻

(Translated by Google) Viewing Villach from above is wonderful! A small entrance fee (free with the Carinthia Card) and then the approximately 239 steps to the top. History, such as the Way of St. James, a gallery through Carinthia, and a gallery of the surrounding mountains are vividly presented. At the very top, the watchman's apartment, which was used for fire prevention until 1934, is impressive. The bells ring every 15 minutes, and the 39-step spiral staircase, controlled by a traffic light system, is impressive. The view is magnificent and well worth it. Thank you ☺️ (Original) Villach von oben betrachten, wunderbar! Vielen Dank ☺️

Lake Faak, often referred to as the Caribbean of Carinthia, is a stunning gem nestled within the breathtaking landscape of the southern limestone Alps. Surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and lush green forests, this picturesque lake offers an enchanting atmosphere that captivates visitors, especially during sunrise and sunset when its unique turquoise hue comes alive. The vibrant color of Lake Faaker See is attributed to sunlight reflecting off tiny lime particles from glacial sources, creating a magical experience for all who visit.
One of the cleanest and most beautiful lakes in Austria! It's not too big but immensely pretty, both with its views and its cleanliness!
Laura F — Google review
Lake Faak as the European Bike Week stage, every year, is simply THE bikers dream of the year. Can't imagine a better place for such a big event. And you can bring family, kids, too. They can chill and play and swim in the lake, while the motorcyclist of the proud family goes around the bikers villages.... Some comments, and why this is not a 5 star review: - in the summer and also during the Bike Week, it gets really hot and there is just too little shade everywhere (also at the lake beaches, too little is taken care for shade) - to the contrary, when it rains, which can happen often in these parts during September, it gets pretty cold and nasty. During bad weather it's muddy, windy, cold etc, again, no real roof protection if you get caught without an umbrella. Then better wait and come on the crowdy weekend if the weather settles then. - if you are looking for an overnight stay in Faak during the Bike Week, don't bother finding hotels or apartments close to the event because the best ones are reserved for years in advance; or you simply won't find anything "normal"; or it will be so ridiculously pricey that it's better sleep in a car or something :):):) - the best of the Bike Week actually happens during the week days, so if you manage, come visit before the crazy crowded weekend. During the week, there is still really a lot of bikers and bikes, but all is more peaceful, you can get better choice and deals in the merchandise and parts booths (on weekends the best things are sold out) and you have a much easier life if you want to check out the new Harleys, or try them out on a test ride. - oh and this is a really small village here, so don't expect infrastructure of bigger towns like big markets, Spar and stuff... There is a small post office, a small pharmacy, and a fuel station... :) The pizzerias are not even open during Bike Week (maybe one....). Everything else are hotels, weekend houses, apartments and the lake. Oh and Harley people, when will miss Karen Davidson come? Since Willy G is not with us anymore, can we see at least miss Davidson more? That would be a real privilege.

The most stupid lake I have ever visited. The lake is beautiful, but impossible to reach without paying for everything. It is surrounded by the smell of tourist economics. You cannot just simply go on foot to the lake and take a look around and make pictures. You have to pay pay pay. I will never ever visit this lake once again.
Gertjan 6 — Google review
Beautiful lake but like in any place in Austria it is not easy to get to the shore or beach as they are all privately owned so you need to go in one of the camping and pay for access

Lake
The Silbersee is a stunning, pristine body of water that may not be suitable for ice-skating due to its warmer temperature. It seems that the ice is too soft and slippery, making it difficult to navigate without falling. This could possibly be attributed to the unseasonably warm weather experienced at the end of January. Despite this, the lake offers a picturesque setting with crystal-clear water and is an ideal destination for families seeking quality time together.
Very beautiful and clean water small lake. Family place and no dogs allowed in summer. Usually its water is hotter than the other lakes around the region.

Cool but I was afraid of ice-skate on it. Probably too hot but I could not do a step without Trippin, ice was too soft. Visited end of January (warm weather since a few days) probably that's why. In that occasion I was not feeling safe.

Nice car museum, compact and personal, even the fumes of petrol and cars where perfect! - Really good collection of cars from the 70s, 80s and 90s - brought back memories from the best time in the car industry!

Spent there like 3 hours only on car parts of the museum, it's awesome.. Honestly, I would love to see all the cars from all sides, because of the details, curves and lines, but as I talked to the reception girl (professional and smiling girl in one person), place is a limit. Will totally recommend this collection/museum to others and if there will be some excursion with possibility to see whole cars, I'm totally in! Thank you for showing us these awesome pieces. PS: Look at a Seicento under wooden planks made me really sad..
Petr S — Google review

Nice little museum. But there is one big fail. You cannot put a fake Lamborghini Countach Kit car in it and try to pass it as the real deal. People will know. The rest of the collection is pretty nice but this was a big let down hence only 2 stars.
