Obertraun is a small lakeside village on Lake Hallstatt, surrounded by steep mountains and traditional alpine scenery. It serves as a quieter base near the famous town of Hallstatt, with easy access by boat, train, and road. Visitors come for the Dachstein Krippenstein area, known for its extensive hiking trails, viewpoints such as the 5fingers skywalk, and large limestone caves including the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave and Mammoth Cave. In winter, the Krippenstein ski area offers freeride terrain and panoramic runs.
With favorites like Rudolfsturm, Lodge am Krippenstein, and World Heritage Spiral (Welterbespirale), we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. Panoramic Viewpoint - Hallstatt is a picturesque town nestled amidst the mountains, accessible via the A1 motorway from Vienna. Despite rumors linking it to Disney's Frozen and a replica in China, it remains a stunning destination. Visitors can expect an atmospheric ambiance, especially during overcast weather, adding mystery and tranquility to the experience. The best time to visit may be early morning on Sundays to avoid crowds.
Whatever reviews you read that promote this town in a positive light. Believe them and then be ready for more. The town truly has amazing views, straight from a storybook. Every house, building and landmark is in pristine shape and simply put, beautiful. I read some reviews that warn visitors about the price tag of visiting here. Frankly, unless you want the most expensive food and best drinks, its very inexpensive. Beware the urge to purchase souvenirs, some of the shops take only cash, so being some extra bills. We walked the whole town up and down and back and forth in about 3 hours, taking our sweet time, the ferry comes often and takes only about 7 minutes to cross the lake. Currently its 8 euro per person to cross, also in cash, no cards. I am sure your visit will be enjoyable and become a lasting memory.

The place is truly majestic and worth visiting. However, I did find some people there a bit less welcoming, which felt surprising given that the location is such a popular tourist destination. Since prices are already on the higher side and the area is heavily promoted for tourism, a warmer attitude toward visitors would certainly enhance the overall experience. While I wouldn’t say I had expected exceptional hospitality, there’s definitely room for improvement.

Stunning view, definitely one of my life checklist places. Greeted by perfect weather and truly appreciated all my effort driving here from Salzburg. Many people take the train, but driving gave me the chance to stop and enjoy a few of the most fantastic views I’ve ever seen in my life. A bit pricey on food and drinks, but that’s okay ,the experience was totally worth it.

It’s one of the beautiful villages in the world. Must visit if you are visiting Salzburg. One hour away from Salzburg by car. Here you need to walk a lot and see one of the most beautiful views to the lake with mountains and village. A lot of shops available

Amazing view of Hallstatt. Its great in any season, you're guaranteed a great picturesque and postcard picture whether its sunny, rainy or snowy. There is no ticket to pay, its crowded most of the time but you get your chance too. Easy to access, near to Marktplatz and ship station.

A Fairytale Made Real, But Prepare for Crowds Hallstatt is truly one of the most picturesque villages in the world. The views of the lake and mountains are breathtaking. Don't miss the Skywalk for an epic panorama and the historic Salt Mine.
Akshay J — Google review
It's a beautiful place. Come early in the morning to avoid the crowd. The crowd started at noon time on a summer weekday. This place feels like it's out of the world, not in our current time. I can see why some locals weren't thrilled about all those tourists coming so close to their living space. There are some detours off the main street. It's worth it to see different things and relieve some congestion on the main street. It's very interesting that the houses were built in different ways and materials and the lifestyle they had. It's an old city with a long history.

A magical place to take a picture of the most beautiful little town on Earth. Obviously, expect that it will be crowded with a lot of tourists. It is really a postcard kind of view that you rarely see in your life. Charming little town. Note that it is quite cold during Fall.

Nestled in the mountains, Hallstätter See is a picturesque lake with a charming village on its shores. The area offers various water sports and boating activities, as well as nearby hiking trails. Visitors can enjoy culinary delights at restaurants like 'Zum Salzbaron' and 'Kaiserstuberl,' which offer a mix of Austrian and Mediterranean cuisine, including freshly caught fish from the lake.
Hallstätter See is truly one of the most iconic and breathtaking destinations in all of Austria—and personally, my absolute favorite place to visit each year. Surrounded by the majestic Dachstein Alps and the fairytale village of Hallstatt, the lake offers a serene and magical experience that stays with you forever. Its crystal-clear waters, picturesque views, and peaceful environment make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers, photographers, and explorers alike. What makes Hallstätter See even more special is its popularity among international tourists, especially from Asia. Visitors from China, Japan, India, and Pakistan are frequently seen soaking in the charm of the lake and the surrounding town. The blend of natural beauty and cultural fascination is truly unique here. The best time to visit Hallstätter See is during the spring and early autumn months (April to June or September to October), when the weather is pleasant, crowds are manageable, and the views are exceptionally stunning with blossoming landscapes or colorful foliage. However, the lake also has a mystical charm in winter, with snow-covered peaks and peaceful stillness all around. If you're looking for a place that blends natural beauty, culture, peace, and a bit of magic—Hallstätter See is simply unbeatable. Every visit feels like the first, and I look forward to returning year after year.

Hallstatt Lake is simply magical! Surrounded by majestic mountains and the charming village of Hallstatt, the scenery is like something out of a fairytale. Peaceful, picturesque, and perfect for a walk or boat ride. One of the most beautiful places in Austria! One dream come true❤️!The beauty, the atmosphere, and the peace of this place exceeded all my expectations. It felt like stepping into a postcard—unforgettable and magical. A moment I’ll always cherish.

Hallstätter See is a stunning alpine lake surrounded by the Dachstein Alps and the picturesque village of Hallstatt. The crystal-clear waters and dramatic mountain backdrop make it a photographer’s paradise. You can enjoy leisurely walks along the shore, boat rides, or simply relax by the water. However, the area can be quite crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons, which might detract from the tranquil experience. Visiting early in the morning or during off-peak times can offer a more peaceful atmosphere

Hallstatt is truly a dreamlike destination – like stepping into a fairytale. 🏔️✨ Surrounded by majestic mountains and a serene lake, every corner of this charming town feels magical. Walking through its picturesque streets, you can’t help but feel a sense of peace and wonder. A place that captures your heart forever – absolutely unforgettable!
MoHammaD A — Google review
The iconic Hallstatt does not disappoint. Since we stayed overnight we could enjoy some quiet times in the late evening and early morning. Else at other times the small village is overrun by the tourists like us. There are boat trips available on the lake, several other options for boating, kayaking and so on.

This place is even more amazing than it looks in the videos. It’s truly stunning and so atmospheric that there are no words for it – I absolutely loved it. My family and I spent a weekend in Germany, and on the way home we stopped here as well. The place completely captivated us. It’s beautiful, natural, and I believe it’s magical in every season, whether you visit in winter or summer. There are swans, ducks, waterfalls – it’s unbelievable. I could have easily stayed for several days. And the local people are not rude or aggressive at all. They were very kind, helpful and friendly.❤️❤️❤️

The Panoramic Viewpoint - Hallstatt Skywalk is an awe-inspiring observation deck that extends over the charming village of Hallstatt in Austria. Situated at a height of 1,148 feet amidst the stunning Dachstein Alps, it offers breathtaking vistas of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can admire the deep blue waters of Hallstatter See, lush green valleys, and majestic mountain ranges from this elevated vantage point.
Visiting the Hallstatt Panoramic Viewpoint was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. As the funicular carried us gently up the mountainside, the anticipation grew, but nothing could prepare me for the view that awaited. At the top, I was greeted by an awe-inspiring sight: the fairytale village of Hallstatt nestled between the serene lake and majestic alpine peaks. The glass viewing platform makes you feel like you’re floating above the world, offering a 360° panorama that is absolutely surreal. On a clear day, you can see every detail – the shimmering waters, the charming rooftops, and the endless expanse of the Dachstein mountains. It’s not just a viewpoint; it’s a place where time seems to stand still. Perfect for photos, reflection, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature. I’d recommend going early in the morning or late afternoon for the most magical light (and fewer crowds). If you’re in Hallstatt, this is an absolute must-see. It’s the kind of place that leaves you speechless and stays in your heart forever. 🌄✨

Spectacular view from above. Not too expensive and worth the money going up with a „Zahnradbahn“. At the time of our visit we had to climb a LOT of stairs going up, down, up , down and up - exhausting stairs climbing, not for people with problems walking but this will change once the elevator will be ready - guessing in a few month. Check before.

The Panoramic Viewpoint in Hallstatt offers stunning views of the village and lake — truly worth visiting. It can get quite crowded, and we had to wait our turn for photos, but the breathtaking scenery makes it all worthwhile.
Arvind — Google review
I went to the Hallstatt Skywalk at the end of August, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. Getting up there is very easy – you just take the funicular, and the ride itself takes no more than five minutes. Before that, I waited in line for around 15 minutes, which didn’t feel too bad considering how many people want to go up. Once I reached the top, there was another short wait, about 15 minutes, before stepping out onto the viewing platform to take photos. Honestly, the views are incredible and make the wait completely worth it. You can see the lake, the mountains, and the little town far below – it feels like standing above a postcard. The place is quite popular, so it can get a bit crowded, but I think that’s expected in such a famous spot. If you come with a bit of patience, you’ll definitely enjoy it. I would recommend it not only for the Skywalk itself, but also because Hallstatt as a town is really special. Walking around the streets, seeing the houses by the water, and just taking in the atmosphere was just as memorable as the viewpoint. In the end, I’m glad I went – it’s the kind of experience that feels like a must when you’re in this area.

Gorgeous view of the lake and surroundings. The lift area to the cablecar is under construction so we had to go around. But if you're up for an adventure I recommend hiking up there.

If you wanna go walking to the Panoramic viewpoint do the way on the street and read before if the downway is open because we got until a point and it was closed. The view is amazing anyway !
Laura T — Google review
We took the funicular to the entrance to the viewpoint. Then you need to walk up a hill to a LONG set of stairs down, then thru 2 cages of stairs, then back UP another LONG & WINDING set of stairs to reach the Top of the Sky Bridge & Restaurant. Is it worth it? Yes! The views are fabulous and the restaurant was also good. Just to note: they are in the middle of construction 🚧 putting in an Elevator! What a novel idea. That is situated at the top of the funicular so sometime the future those that don't want or can't make the trip with all the upstairs & downs and stairs will be able to experience the views as well. In the meantime... wear sneakers! My calls are still killing me!

Panoramic Viewpoint – Hallstatt Skywalk @ Hallstatt 🏞️⛰️🇦🇹 📍 Welterbeblick Skywalk – World Heritage View The Hallstatt Skywalk is a dramatic viewing platform that juts out 12 meters from the mountainside, 360 meters above the village. From here, you get a breathtaking bird’s-eye view over Hallstätter See, the surrounding Dachstein mountains, and the postcard-perfect village far below. We visited after taking the funicular up for the Salzwelten Hallstatt tour. The Skywalk is just a short walk from the funicular station, making it an easy add-on before or after the mine visit. The view is simply unforgettable—the lake stretches out in deep blue, the rooftops of Hallstatt look tiny beneath you, and the mountains form a majestic backdrop. 📸✨ The platform itself feels sturdy but still gives you that thrilling sensation of floating above the landscape. It’s a spot where you’ll want to take your time for photos and just soak in the scale of the scenery. 🧭 Tip: If you’re doing both the salt mine and Skywalk, book the mine tour early so you can enjoy the Skywalk before the late-morning crowds arrive. Morning light is especially beautiful for photography here.

Salzwelten Hallstatt is a fascinating salt-mine museum located in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut in Austria. It boasts a 7,000-year history and is home to the oldest wooden staircase in Europe, dating back 2,800 years. Visitors can explore over 3000-year-old tunnels and learn about all aspects of salt mining through educational exhibits and a cinema showcasing discoveries made in the mine.
Definitely an unforgettable experience! The underground tunnels were fascinating , sliding down the wooden miner slides was so much fun ! The light show deep inside the mountain was magical as well , views from the top were absolutely breathtaking.

What a great experience. The tour is very entertaining with a lot of facts, fun and adventure. You have to walk a fair amount of stairs. Visitors receive special clothes and can learn a lot about salt in general and about the process of the extraction as well. In the price of 43€ per person is included also the viewpoint, mine tour both in English and Deutsch, slides and a funicular ride in both directions. I totally recommend it! It is really worth it.

Salzwelten Hallstatt & Shop @ Hallstatt 🧂⛏️🇦🇹 🗓️ Visited: Saturday, 9 AM I made an online reservation for the Salzwelten Hallstatt tour and arrived early for the 9 AM slot—an excellent choice, as the morning was quieter and more relaxed. The visit begins with a scenic funicular ride up the hillside, giving beautiful lake views before reaching the mine entrance. The guided tour takes you deep into the historic salt tunnels, past centuries-old wooden pipelines, mining tools, and fascinating multimedia displays. Highlights included sliding down the traditional wooden miners’ slides and seeing the sparkling underground salt lake—absolutely magical. The mix of history, geology, and interactive fun made it a truly memorable experience. After the tour, I browsed the Salzwelten Shop for local gifts—gourmet Hallstatt salt, salt-infused chocolates, cosmetics, and decorative souvenirs. Everything felt unique and tied to the village’s heritage. 💡 The whole tour is worth the price! An absolute must-try if you’re visiting Hallstatt. 🧭 Tip: Book online in advance and go in the morning for a calmer, more spacious experience during the tour.
Quing_刘妈妈 — Google review
It is truly a very unique experience. You get to see how salt was extracted thousand years ago, and how it is being extracted nowadays. Furthermore, the guides are very experienced giving very important information about all the places you get to see, while large wooden slides are available for some fun.

Salzwelten Hallstatt is a unique and fascinating attraction that takes you deep into the ancient salt mines. The tour is both fun and educational, offering a hands-on experience of the history and craft of salt mining. The site is well-preserved, and the guides are knowledgeable and engaging, making the visit truly eye-opening. Combined with the stunning beauty of Hallstatt itself, Salzwelten adds a rich cultural layer to your trip. It’s highly recommended for families and anyone interested in history and culture.
Pion C — Google review
Super fun experience for all who are visiting hallstatt! Tickets and reservation not available online, so u need to purchase them from the base funicular station. The staff will inform you when is the next tour starting, so you just gotta head up in advance via the funicular (which was pretty fast). Each tour is about 43 pax so make sure to queue or plan ahead! i thought that the group size was too big as even though the facilities inside could accomodate this group, there was a lot of unnecessary waiting around and people at the back could not hear what the guide was saying at each station, despite her already close to shouting. The cave was huge, but the time to explore or take photos at each station is very short. The staff will switch off the light within 5mins and people at the back usually dont get much chances to take pics by the time we reach the station. However, the caves were still pretty cool and we really enjoyed the 2 slides! We also got to take a train out of the salt mine via a really narrow tunnel and that was exhilarating. Overall the tour was about 1 and a half hours. The last tour is at 3.40pm, which means u can still catch the last funicular down after you complete the tour.
Cherie C — Google review
The tour was a great experience with lots of fun parts. The tour included fun slides and videos. We received special clothing to safely slide down the rides. The tour starts deep into the mine, where they explain the history of the mine and how they extract the salt. We had a great guide called Jakob, making the tour not only informative but also entertaining. However, the light show was an utter disaster- I could have made better. In addition the pricing what a little expensive.
Vince — Google review
It isn’t a cheap trip - but overall, I am glad we visited the Hallstatt Salt Mine. You have to dress in the protective clothing of the salt miners before you start the tour and backpacks must be left in lockers and reclaimed at the tour’s end. The tour itself took around an hour. You get to ride on two wooden miners’ slides during the trip which is good fun. At the second slide, your speed is recorded as you pass the camera positioned to catch all the fun. We managed to clock up only a miserable 11 kilometres per hour compared to our guide’s winning score of 28.6 kilometres per hour. You also get to ride on the miners’ train back at the end which makes a nice finale. Inside the cave, it is interesting to see the salt deposits up close. Various informative movies are played as you walk through the mine and you get a good feel for the 7,000 year history of salt mining in this part of Austria. Salt is a good preservative, so the Salt Mine is an archeological treasure trove. Towards the end of the tour, you get to see the oldest European evidence of a wooden staircase. Check opening times before you visit as the site is very popular, the only access is via the funicular and numbers are strictly limited. You need to allow 3 hours or so for the whole trip. Dachstein Krippenstein is a picturesque alpine area that offers a wide range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Accessible by cable car, it's a popular destination for winter sports, hiking, mountaineering, and caving. The World Heritage Spiral is a great starting point for beginners to test the waters with a short trail suitable for regular winter boots when there isn't much snow.
It is a unique experience to travel by this cable car. I recommend reporting well before 10 am, which we missed. We got an opportunity for 5 fingers or an ice cave. We picked 5f. It's worth it if you take all day ticket and travel multiple times to trigger our charm factor.

Place it's nice worth going up. But if you are not FIT don't buy tickets for the cave's you will need to climb 1 kilometer to reach them out. You will sweat a lot and when you enter in the cave it's cold 🥶 = sick! Suggestion, go from the second gondola and walk to the top of the hill was nice!

We visited Dachstein Krippenstein in Obertraun this September with our 5-year-old, and it turned out to be such a memorable family adventure! The cable car ride and the stunning mountain views already made the trip worth it, but the caves added a whole other level of excitement. Both the Mammoth Cave and the Ice Cave are absolutely fascinating – our child was amazed! Do keep in mind though: there’s quite a bit of climbing and walking involved, especially in the Ice Cave, so it can be physically demanding. If you’re not ready for uphill paths and stairs, you might want to think twice. But for us, it was still very much worth the effort. A practical tip: bring warm clothes! Even in September the caves are very cold, and you’ll be glad to have a jacket. All in all, it’s an unforgettable experience for families who enjoy nature, adventure, and a little challenge along the way.

We have tried the cable car to go up the mountain to the first station where it was snowing there. The view and the trip up was very nice and memorable. The view was awesome from up. You can find a restaurant in the station up and souvenir shop

Easy to reach by car or bus. Plenty of parking is available, it also has several charging stations. Parking is easy and ticket free, it reads the number plate and you have option to pay before leaving or within 48 hrs online, great. From here you take gondola to the ice cave. After getting down you have to walk around 20 minutes uphill. During bad weather and for older people it might be challenging. The view is amazing from here and during n8ce weather you could spend long quality time.

5 Fingers is a one-of-a-kind observation platform located on the Dachstein Mountains in Upper Austria. Accessible by cable cars, it offers breathtaking views and an adrenaline rush as you stand on its hand-shaped "fingers" that stretch 400 meters above the ground. The hike to reach this platform takes about 25-30 minutes and provides stunning panoramic views of Hallstatt town, the lake, and the glacier remnants from the ice age.
One of the most beautiful and best in my opinion with breathtaking panoramic views! Yes, the walk is not an easy one as you take the cable car to the top of "Five Fingers" which takes 20-30 minutes. Then walking up to the top and to the platform takes time and effort. Please take clothes and take them for walking. Note that the price of a round-trip cable car ticket starts at approximately 44 euros - which is a bit expensive, but the views are breathtaking. Be sure to check the weather forecast before you go up, as it is surrounded by a lot of clouds and you will see a view of Lake and the village of Hallstatt, the most beautiful village in Austria.

Visited here on 17-06-25. Advisable to come as early as possible to see as much as possible as distances are vast between attractions and the 5 Fingers Viewpoint itself. If you are going to see any of the caves, leave ample time before taking the next cable car up to the taller mountain to 5 Fingers Viewpoint. We were not told how long the walk would be the to the cave. We bought a combination ticket to see the Ice Cave and 5 Fingers. Make sure you wear sturdy comfortable shoes with a good grip. The weather was very warm and we were not told that the walk up to the entrance of the cave was 20 mins and STEEP. In the hot sun, it wasn't easy. The cave tour is amazing. Bring a light jacket/jumper as it gets very cool/cold inside depending on how you adjust to low temperatures. It starts off exploring the main caves. You will see many stalactites and stalagmites formations. Be warned, there are many steps including steep staircase steps to the Ice cave so advisable that you are relatively fit and in good health as the tour requires a lot of walking and many steps as well as a few steep staircases. The cave tour is amazing, the sheer size, the rock formations and the ice. Once you go to get the 2nd cable car and head up to the submit, the spaces are vast and to get to the 5 Fingers Viewing Point is actually quite a walk, 30 mins to be precise. The surface is NOT completely flat and consists of inclines both up and down so bare that in mind depending on how good you are at walking and breathing given the altitude and weather, if its hot. The views are incredible. We were lucky enough to see two paragliders preparing to take off which was amazing to watch. *MOST IMPORTANT* - Remember what time the LAST cable car is due to leave. We lost track of time and ended up missing the last one. Thankfully after talking to a few people, there was one at 6pm (unofficial) which we rode back down with staff of the cable cars but be conscious of time. There is a restaurant at the top reasonable priced where you can have a drink/meal as well as toilets. Overall an amazing visit, we had a wonderful time. Would advise to leave ample time to explore, comfortable, sturdy footwear, plenty of water/drinks to stay hydrated, sun screen, sunglasses, in other words come prepared.

Beautiful view. Cost about 40ish euros to go up 60ish for whole package including ice cave and Mammoth cave. It's about a 15 minute hike after reaching the top of the funicular. View is stunning. Can easily spend a day in dachstein if you incorporate ice cave and Mammoth and want to bask in the views.

Very nice view of the Hallstättersee. 🤩 Like every tourist attraction there were a few people, but it was okay. 😀

Worth every penny to go see this beautiful place! Fair warning: the observation deck is a 30 minute, medium rigor hike away from the cable car. Totally doable if you’re in decent shape. Will be challenging if you have physical limitations/are in bad shape.
Jake G — Google review
Five fingers is an amazing viewing platform reachable within 20-30 minutes on foot from the cable car station on Krippenstein. There is an option to have your photo being taken and to pick it up later back at the cable car station. On a beautiful day, expect more people, especially families and groups, but it was still manageable when we visited on a weekday.

Really great view. The price is worth it. On the other hand I don't recommend visiting the ice cave. It is really disappointing

World Heritage Spiral (Welterbespirale)

Observation deck
The World Heritage Spiral (Welterbespirale) is a must-visit attraction in Dachstein, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Hallstatt and its surroundings from atop a 2,100-meter peak. Accessible via the Dachstein World Heritage Cable Car, this site provides an opportunity to explore the Giant Ice Cave and Mammoth Cave as well as witness three and a half thousand years of cultural heritage.
It’s a must visit place when you are on visit of Dachstein as it has a 360 degree view of the whole Hallstatt and it’s surrounding area. Here you will enjoy the fresh air with a little cold wind. If it’s sunny then the beauty of Hallstatt village can be enjoyed from far away. There are sign boards that will lead you about the directions and different scenic mountain names with descriptions as shown in the pictures.

An ideal place for 360° shot if you climb up on the bench in the middle of the Welterspirale :-) The views from there are great in all four directions. If the weather is good, you can see far behind the surrounding mountains. The walk from the upper cable car station takes around 5 minutes. So it is quite close. We saw people even with push chairs to go there.

Money well spent. The cabin is a little bit expensive but it is worth it as you can see. Little walk around the top and you can see snowy mountains and lake on the other side. Beautiful view over Hallstadt

Restaurant
Rudolfsturm, located in Hallstatt, Austria, is a historic restaurant housed in a medieval defense tower dating back to the 13th century. The establishment offers a unique dining experience with its panoramic terrace providing breathtaking views of the Dachstein Mountain Range. Guests can savor hearty local and regional delicacies from an exceptional menu that includes specialties such as the Rudolfsturm cold cut platter, Hungarian Gulaschsoup, and Spaghetti bolognese.
We ordered goulash and fish with 2 coffees I would say something were missing in goulash, maybe a little bit of spice but overall was great, excellent, delicious meat Excellent coffee The best was fish, don't let high price false you this fish is worth any money Restaurant have beautiful view

We went there on a Monday afternoon. I’m not sure if this is a thing here in Austria but the service was rude at first but then they warmed to us. You will have to look for a table yourself or ask someone to share since many reserved places and staff weren’t helpful in finding you an empty table. The food was ok nothing special but the view was amazing. One of the staff was really rude and weird since we didn’t open the umbrella completely like it had one turn left and he was making fun of us or something I still don’t get the whole situation. Again I think all restaurants and people there aren’t warming up to tourist fast or specific type of tourist but I’d recommend the place for coffee and dessert instead of a meal.
Deena A — Google review
The food tastes good. We got to eat fresh and delicious fish. The chocolate cake was a bit hard. But the best thing is the lake view. If anyone comes to eat, I recommend sitting outside the building.
Paraj R — Google review
The view here is absolutely stunning — definitely the highlight of the experience. Whether you’re eating or drinking on the terrace, you’re treated to a breathtaking panorama that’s perfect for photos and relaxing. However, the food itself was just average. The menu had a decent selection, but the flavors didn’t quite match the quality of the scenery. It’s a great spot for a drink or light bite while enjoying the view, but if you’re coming mainly for the food, you might leave a bit underwhelmed.

Rudolfsturm @ Hallstatt 🍏🥧⛰️🇦🇹 📍 Historic Watchtower Café & Restaurant Perched high above Hallstatt, the Rudolfsturm is a former 13th-century watchtower that once protected the salt mine. Today, it’s a café and restaurant with one of the most spectacular views in the region—overlooking Hallstätter See, the Dachstein mountains, and the charming village far below. After visiting the Hallstatt Skywalk, we stopped here to sit back, relax, and enjoy a plate of apple pie. The pastry was warm and comforting, with a hint of cinnamon, perfectly paired with the crisp alpine air and panoramic view. It was the ideal moment to slow down and take in the scenery after a morning of exploring. The outdoor terrace offers the best vantage point, but even indoors you can enjoy the views through large windows. It’s a unique blend of history, good food, and breathtaking nature. 🧭 Tip: Plan your visit for mid-morning or early afternoon—before the lunch rush—so you can secure a table with the best views, and don’t skip the apple pie.

We visited this place yesterday and had two goulash dishes and two cappuccinos. The food itself was delicious—no complaints there. However, we were shocked to find that the final bill was much higher than expected. After reviewing our budget, we realized we had been charged more than what we actually ordered. It seems they may have added an excessive tip—or possibly charged for something we didn’t ask for—without any explanation. As Asian tourists, we couldn’t help but feel we were taken advantage of, assuming we wouldn’t notice. It was disappointing and left a bad impression despite the great food. To be honest, we even wondered if they overcharged us precisely because this was a tourist viewpoint—knowing we wouldn’t be coming back anyway. Please double-check your bill before paying. Tourists, be cautious.

Absolutely amazing food and outstanding service. We were served by Stephane who gave an outstanding service. The place was super busy and all the staff at restaurant were running around. Despite all that I saw Stephane made sure everyone in the queue was seen to and had a smile on his face all the time he served us and other tables around us. That’s a very rare sight in most restaurants nowadays. The restaurant is on a hilltop from where you get a panoramic view of Hallstatt. Beating a place with a view we were expecting mediocre food and service. However this restaurant’s food and its staff were awesome. I never give any restaurant a 5 star on all aspects. But these gyz deserve it in every way.

Bergrestaurant Dachstein Krippenstein offers a stunning dining experience with its breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The restaurant provides friendly and pleasant service, along with surprisingly good food considering its high-altitude location. While some dishes may have room for improvement, the overall experience is enhanced by the clean and spacious environment.
Eating while enjoying the breathtaking view was an unforgettable experience. The food came out quickly, and the portion was huge and delicious!

Visited this place on a Thursday morning. We ordered coffee and hot chocolate and Sachertorte with whipped cream. The coffee tasted okay so was the hot chocolate and the cake tasted good. The place was not at all crowded. The waiter was polite and friendly. It is little bit pricey. The ambience is great. It was extremely cold and windy that day and it felt nice to grab a cup of coffee and watch the view from here. It has a great view as well. I would recommend it for the view.

Big fail. As we stumbled out with grumbling stomachs and dissatisfied palette, we realised that the only good service at this place was the cell service. When we walked in, the staff were flipping each other off in the kitchen. They forgot to serve us until we waved frantically at them, and then they served us shoe leather that was billed as pork schnitzel. The place is also priced as if the food is quality: €20 schnitzel that was worse than street food, and potatoes boiled in fishy oil. The place was practically deserted, but it took 20 minutes for every interaction with the staff. Waste of time and money. Finally we went into the back, and the 5 staff members were eating food while we, their guests waited. Highly deserves the one star. Don't go there.

The male staff who served everyone at the time was really friendly and kind. He explained about the restaurant and the dishes they have with a sense of humour. It was a very nice service we received from him. The food was surprisingly good for a restaurant located so up high. And of course the view from this place was amazing 360 degree.

We sat down inside after we recognized there was no free table left outside. Sat down for approximately 15 minutes and the servers didn t give any attention to us. After my husband asked for service they just said that they will come to us. Waited another 5 min then left with disappointment.

After a short track in the mountains, tired and hungry, we decided to have a late lunch here. And have to say we were surprised. Pleasant staff, good food, acceptable prices. And great view on the mountains around.

Portions are noticeably smaller than average, but prices remain standard. Service is slow, unfriendly, and borderline arrogant — you have to wave them down repeatedly. The food tastes like cheap frozen meals, poorly reheated. Overall, a disappointing experience.

Food was very delicious. We were scare a bit when they put a plate infront of us because it was not looking good at all but after 1st bite everything changed😁 Not too pricy for restaurant like this. Point that really dissapoint us was the waiters. We were waiting for ordering more food/drinks for like 20 minutes ( already finished food ) - Everytime i asked someone to order they just told me “wait for the lady” .. Lady saw me a few times smile or look on me that she knows i am waiting for service but then she dissapear for another 5 minutes. Wasnt really busy at all. But eating food with this view is awesome

Nestled in the heart of Hallstatt, Heritage Hotel offers cozy accommodations with some rooms featuring balconies and stunning lake views. The hotel's prime location provides easy access to the Evangelical Parish Church, Hallstatter Lake, and the ferry dock. Guests can savor a freshly made breakfast while admiring the serene lake and Dachstein mountains. The property boasts a mix of modern amenities and a 400-year-old historic building.
The hotel and the restaurant are places not to miss. The rooms are nice and large and have some of the best views! The restaurant is perfect for a before dinner drink and the food is amazing!!! The lamb stew was such a great dish we recommend it others around the town. Don’t pass on this hotel. Rodolfo and Ivan were awesome and made our stay extra special.
Justin S — Google review
The location of this hotel is undeniably beautiful, right in the heart of Hallstatt. Unfortunately, the overall experience was overshadowed by the staff, particularly Ms. C**** at reception. Her attitude was extremely rude and unprofessional, with a tone that felt more threatening than welcoming. Instead of hospitality, guests are met with hostility, which is the last thing one expects on a vacation. The room itself was a huge disappointment. There was no space to keep bags, spider webs were visible around the room, and when we checked in, the room had not even been serviced properly. It felt neglected and far below the standard expected of a “heritage” property. We were so unhappy and uncomfortable that we decided to leave the hotel a day earlier than planned. That alone says a lot about how unpleasant the stay was. While the picturesque location could have made up for some shortcomings, the unfriendly staff, lack of cleanliness, and uncomfortable rooms ruined the experience. Overall, the Heritage Hotel has a great location but is completely let down by poor service and bad hospitality. Very disappointing.
Punit T — Google review
You pay for the location & view of this hotel - and we did have a great view/balcony. Although, there was not much privacy in the balcony. The room was very spacious and right in the middle of town. You do need to park your car and walk a bit to get to the rooms. Our room was separate from the main hotel in a different building. The staff was very nice & friendly. The issue was the cleanliness of the room. The bathroom shower had hair in it, and mould. We only stayed 1 night so it wasn’t a huge issue, but I wouldn’t have wanted to stay a longer period.

We love Hallstatt and Heritage hotel. It’s very nice and clean hotel (feels like home). We got a room font to the lake, it’s stunning view. The most convenient to get into the hotel is by taking a train and ferry. Hotel is just right at the pier make it so convenient. Will go back again in winter. Breakfast was great and plenty of foods. We had a dinner at hotel, price was little pricey compared to others, but tastes good.

We stayed at the Heritage last winter and we were lucky to have a room with lake view at the top floor. Can't beat the view. The hotel staff was very friendly and we enjoyed having dinner at the hotel's restaurant during our stay. Definitely will re-visit!

We enjoyed our stay here and the room was great! I’m giving the service a 4/5 rather than 5/5 because one of the reception staff was very rough in character and we felt some attitude towards us when we were checking in and checking out. The other two staff members we interacted with were very friendly and approachable. The restaurant staff in particular are really nice and the food here was awesome.

A Truly Exceptional Stay – Unmatched Service and Stunning Views Having traveled extensively for over 30 years, both for business and leisure, it's rare to come across a property that truly stands out in every aspect. Heritage Hotel is one of those rare gems. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this hotel goes far beyond just providing accommodation—it offers a full experience marked by genuine hospitality, attention to detail, and an unforgettable setting. The location is simply outstanding, nestled right in the heart of Hallstatt with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Waking up to the serene beauty of the area each morning was nothing short of magical. The breakfast spread was equally impressive—fresh, well-curated, and served with care in a charming dining room overlooking the lake. But what truly sets Heritage Hotel apart is the people. We encountered an unrelated issue upon arrival, and Nicole at the front desk immediately sprang into action. Her initiative, kindness, and professionalism turned a stressful situation into a seamless solution. She went above and beyond—arranging transportation, providing complimentary tickets, and even personally mapping out the return route to ensure I wouldn’t miss a crucial connection. Later that evening, Joseph, the hotel driver, picked me up from the train station. Despite the late hour, he welcomed me warmly and made the final leg of my journey back feel effortless. In all my years of travel, it’s this level of sincere, thoughtful service that makes a hotel truly memorable. Heritage Hotel combines a spectacular setting with a team that genuinely cares about its guests. I would return in a heartbeat and highly recommend it to anyone seeking not just a beautiful place to stay, but a remarkable experience from start to finish.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our stay at Heritage.Hotel Hallstatt was absolutely excellent! The lake view room at the main hotel was comfortable and charming, perfectly blending modern touches with the town’s historic beauty. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast and lunch—the mushroom soup, schnitzel, and whole trout were all outstanding, fresh, and beautifully presented. The staff were professional and nice, making our experience smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. A wonderful stay in one of Austria’s most breathtaking places!

Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Camping am See, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Hoher Dachstein. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Campground
Camping am See, also known as Camping Park by the lake, is nestled in the pristine Alpine landscape near charming villages like Hallstatt and Obertraun. The highlight of this location is the 300m high mountain hiking. Guests can stay in unique accommodations such as old gypsy caravans filled with antiques and curiosities, each with a separate private bathroom nearby. The friendly owners ensure a memorable experience for visitors. The campground offers tent and RV camping options as well.
Beautiful place. Loved staying here. Not far from Hallstatt. 20 min bike ride. Surrounded by mountains. Great views. I reccomend. 64€ including tax for 2 and a van.

We stayed in Victorian style wagons. We were late by 1 hour of checking time. So had to pay 30 euros additional. It was a rainy night. So did not enjoy the morning as much. But beautiful place.

Prices like from outer space for as much as you pay for a stay here you expect a lot, but the extra charge for showers is probably a slight exaggeration. The place is beautiful, there is no denying the nature everywhere a lot of greenery camping centrally located on the lake which is very clean. The daughter of the owner is a very nice person what can no longer be said about the owner himself. Very many strange rules. We had to leave by 11 o'clock. We arrived in the evening of the previous day, so in general we were there a short time. We asked the owner's daughter if we can park the car in front of the campground, we can use the beach and bathe in the lake. She agreed and allowed us to stay until 12 two minutes after 12 came the owner red with anger and in a hurry drove us out of the campsite

We arrived at the end of the season, so there were few guests, and not many workers there. The area is amazing: beautiful, great scenery, quiet at night. I really wanted to camp somewhere romantic, and this is the place! The shower area has marble floors, the camping areas are pristine and grassy. There are amazing gypsy caravans made of hand-carved wood, and the real "Django Reinhardt" caravan, with the original furniture. You can have a picnic lunch at an antique park table, surrounded by heirloom roses and trees. It's a great place for jazz lovers or people wanting a special camping experience. The owners have assembled a quirky, eccentric mix of art and antiques in the cafe. The place is eccentric– no menus (!), it's open whenever (!!), and you have to warn in advance if you want breakfast. However, it was worth it. We had a lovely breakfast in the cafe, in front of the fireplace, surrounded by antiques, books and paintings. Everything was delicious, including homemade jam and gluten-free rolls. The downsides: It's more expensive than the other camping sites. The huge list of rules they hand you (really, they need to rewrite this!), and having to use a chip for showering. The Wifi only works in some areas. They DO NOT accept cards, either (the whole area of Austria seems to have an aversion to credit cards!) Also, at first, the camping park owners seemed a bit standoffish, maybe because we came a bit later than hoped for. Make sure you reserve or call in advance.
Tabitha E — Google review
I completely agree with the review by Ludmila Palivcová. This was by far the worst and most overpriced campsite we have ever stayed at. You get absolutely nothing extra for the very high price – it’s no better than camping in a car park. If you’re in a small tent with a car, you’re in real trouble when it rains. There are no communal areas or shelters at all. The only covered space is the bar terrace – and they will kick you out if you’re not buying anything. They clearly only care about taking your money. The rules are unreasonable. We had to park outside the campsite just to be able to leave early for a hike, because they don’t unlock the gate until 9 a.m. Outside the main gate there is a completely clogged drain, so I had to wade through over 30 cm of water to reach the car. I can imagine that people with large caravans will have a more comfortable stay and might rate this place higher. But even if you have a caravan, I’d urge you to think twice and not support this place – show solidarity with tent campers and don’t reward such poor treatment. In summary: it’s a complete rip-off, with no hospitality, absurd rules, and no consideration for campers with tents. Stay away!!!!
Lukáš K — Google review
We had a very uncomfortable experience at this campsite. – Check-in took over 30 minutes. – The owner was rude and incorrectly claimed we confirmed our booking too late, despite following their instructions. – We weren’t allowed to drive to our pitch to unload, while other cars were parked nearby. – In rainy weather, no covered common area was available – the “refurbishment” area was used as storage. On the website this is not updated and camp map is showing covered area. – We were denied use of a covered terrace because it was only for bar guests, but the bar wasn’t operating so we weren’t able to order anything. But on their website they claim it’s operating from 4pm to 9pm. – We were falsely accused of cooking and drinking near the dishwashing area while just sitting with a child to pass time in rainy weather. – Staff took photos of us without consent. – We asked to leave after an hour, but they refused to refund us more than €50 of the €450 paid. Not recommended – very poor treatment and no hospitality. Very expensive camping and not worth it.

We just stopped by this Hütte for lunch. The ramen’s pretty spicy (it says so), but still really good! We weren’t big fans of the Kaiserschmarrn — we’ve had better. Still, it’s an awesome spot to grab a drink and a bite with an amazing view!

What an awesome place! The owners and staff were kind. An incredible location. Important to note it is only accessible by gondola, I originally didn't realize that when I booked my stay here, but it was a fun surprise. The views are incredible, truly a unique place. The buffet dinner was very tasty. If I ever return to Austria, I would absolutely stay here again. My only complaint was that you had to pay for the shower (not a big deal), but they only gave you 4 minutes, and I don't know if I can take a shower that fast 😅

For those who saw this while searching for Hallstatt, this is not it. You have to go up by cable car and walk through the snow for about 10-15 minutes. It is a very beautiful place to stay. You have to pay extra for food. 40 euros for breakfast and dinner buffet if you sleep under the roof. The food is very good overall, tasty but not much variety. The accommodation is good, clean. There is a bathroom but if you want to shower you have to pay extra. The receptionist is friendly.

The hotel is located in a picturesque mountain setting. You can reach it by cable car, enjoying stunning views during the ascent. Vacation rating: natural beauty – amazing! Staff attitude – absolutely terrible! Upon check-in, they showed attention to a personal issue and assured understanding, but upon check-out, they confronted us with a fait accompli, retracting their promise to help resolve the situation. One staff member literally said, "That's not my problem." The mood was ruined. Additionally, no one warned us that hot water in the shower was paid, so we had to shower in cold water. Meals are mandatory, with exorbitantly high prices that don’t match the quality or variety. We will never return and do not recommend this hotel.

On a through hike from Hallstatt to Durnstein Mt gondola, we stopped here over night. There was a misunderstanding about the reservation. If you have a dog, call or email ahead to clarify what they can accomidate. Otherwise, they are extremely considerate of their guests. The building is old and need a little updating as not all doors lock. But it is a very trusting environment and I hope it stays this way.

Austrian Sports Resorts BSFZ Obertraun is a simple yet comfortable resort offering free meals and indoor/outdoor sports facilities. Located in the stunning Salzkammergut region, just 4 km from Dachstein and a minute's walk from Lake Hallstatt, it provides breathtaking scenery. Visitors during peak season found the rooms tidy, with great B&B services and safekeeping for sports equipment.
Visited this venue during the peak season of Spring 2021 and despite the high price, there was not a single issue in the things that matter, such as room tidiness and cleanliness, provided B&B services and sports equipment safekeeping. The location combines easy access both to the lake and to the lifts for the southern piste. Great view to the lake (if your room is accordingly oriented).

If you are a sport player who lives in Austria, maybe you can find the place ok, but as a foreigner /tourist is very confusing to find the reception, and it doesn't feel like arriving to a "stay". They are not clear enough with the instructions for breakfast. When asked they tend to get upset easy (very Austrian). Location is far if you don't have a car. There are no restaurants around.

Rooms are really specious..can accommodate 5 people without making it crowded. Nice toilet and bathroom. Sport ground and halls are well equipped. Environment is very friendly and nice. Staff is well attentative.

Been here with school. Great amount of possibilities for sport. Great rooms, great food. The Hallstätter lake is only a few hundred meters away and you can easily visit Hallstatt itself.

Located within the Dachstein Glacier in Austria, Eispalast Dachstein is a mesmerizing attraction featuring an ice palace filled with pillars, carved figurines, and themed rooms. Visitors can explore this mystical world of ice and snow deep inside the glacier, offering a unique experience for hikers, skiers, and leisurely strollers alike. The palace is situated in a crevice along a sheer cliff face, creating an otherworldly effect as you walk through its enormous hollow.
Wow, it was amazing inside there. The art of making such beautiful things from Eis was just great. I was very surprised to see such an amazing place with great artwork . Absolutely great job maintaining this so beautiful and great for other people to visit. It was a beautiful experience to visit this place.

Love it, from the sculptures to the light and sound effects. A very unique experience.

You can put this place in your list to visit when you are in Dachstein. Nice ice caves. But be careful with your steps, the floor is so slippery. Same with Treppe ins Nichts, you are not allowed d bring your dog come here. So I enjoyed this place alone and my husband and our dog waiting near the ticket counter.
Yani H — Google review
The ice palace was quite fun to visit, but not necessarily very big, which was a shame if you ask me. The sculptures were very pretty with a lot of details. If you're on the mountain I would definitely recommend you walk through here even though it's pretty cold.
Timo H — Google review
Really great place 😊 it was a bit expensive. The shuttle left us at the car park at the bottom of the toll road before we got on it. We had to get the public bus up, which cost a bit extra. Make sure you have plenty of layers on
Mike V — Google review
It's worth to visit it. It's 6 meter under the glacier. There are various figures made of ice. You have to pass the air bridge to the entry

Hoher Dachstein, located in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut, offers a stunning natural landscape with extensive hiking and skiing areas. Visitors can enjoy gondola access and a suspension bridge, as well as breathtaking views of the Hallstattersee lake and impressive mountain scenery.
Visited in winter 2023. Beautiful and easily accessible mountains thanks to the elevator. You can park the car almost near the elevator, go up and have a walk at almost 3 km altitude. Actually, there is a couple of attractions on the top - restaurant, ice cave, suspension bridge, stairway to nowhere. It may take near 2-3 hours to visit everything and have a lunch. Be mindful of clothes - it's quite windy
Andrei B — Google review
Besides the glacier and skywalk, I can totally recommended visiting the Ice Palace - here you walk in corridors carved within the glacier. Absolutely unique experience, which also highlights that in the current climat change, such places may eventually disappear althogether.
Piotr S — Google review
Breathtaking views and a wonderful experience, though some staff were surprisingly rude, and the organization and lines for the return cable car were a mess. Still, the scenery makes it worth the visit.
Aljohrah A — Google review
Beautiful mountain at the border between Styria and Upper Austria with a height of nearly 3.000 meters above sea level. Allows for great hiking trips on lower levels and great outlooks from the gondola mountain station. Is reachable via a gondola that even has a balcony for adventurous visitors. To reach the gondola, you can either go there by car (consider that the alpine street is a toll street with fees) or by public transport (direct busses from Schladming, that are free to use if you have a valid Schladming Sommercard). Be sure to reserve a spot for ascent and descent in advance, as they will require it.
Roxanne S — Google review
Magnificent mountain, hard find words to described this breath taking place. If you travelling around you must visit this scenic area. Between sky and ice - at an altitude of 2,700 meters The Dachstein, the highest mountain peak in Styria, the distinctive, lacy limestone mountain chain, is one of the most popular destinations in the whole of Austria, thanks to the lookout, which can be reached by cable car, and which awaits visitors with many experiences. Located between the Salzkammergut lake region and Styria, on the northern side of the nearly 3,000-meter high Dachstein, on the glacier, you can take an easy walk in the kingdom of eternal snow on a built-up route. In addition to the SkyWalk lookout, the Ice Palace and the nerve-wracking suspension bridge built a few years ago, spanning a depth of hundreds of meters, are an unmissable sight and a unique experience.
Attila B — Google review
What a beautiful scenery, an absolute must! The peaks covered in snow will leave you in awe. Especially on a sunny day, the contrast of the deep blue sky to the grey rock and the pure snow enhance the whole experience. In winter the area looks like a white desert. Stunning! I recommend doing the 25km Dachstein Überquerung (Dachstein crossing) as a cross country ski hike. Normal alpine skis suffice (but cross country skis would be better). It is suitable for the inexperienced with moderate stamina. The gondola at the star, plus the one on the Krippenstein and the bus back is roughly €50 (April 2018).
Florian F — Google review
I think this is the most beautiful place I seen until now. Everywhere you will look you will see mountains. It was a great experience and in my opinion the price was good. The price is 43€ per person and includes the parking auto, the cable car, suspended bridge and the ice cave. In the top of the mountain is a restaurant with good food and baverages, the personal is very nice and prices are good. In the restaurant you can buy suvenir if you want.
Andreea J — Google review
Perfect unique experience, make sure you visit in a good sunny weather to be able to spend time outside. And dont forget to validate the tolls ticket at the mountain top, before goimg down!!

Gasthof Höllwirt is a popular and highly regarded restaurant known for its friendly staff, good service, and diverse menu featuring delicious regional products. The cozy restaurant offers a variety of tasty Austrian dishes, including bratwurst with sauerkraut and potatoes. While some guests found the grill meat to be old on their first visit, others enjoyed the recommended fish dishes and grilled ribs on subsequent visits.
Amazing stay! 🌟 The location is perfect, everything is so close. The rooms, bathrooms, and common areas were clean, with excellent comfort and smart layout. Amenities included Wi-Fi, TV, and a mini fridge, which was very convenient. The staff were friendly, helpful, and professional, making everything easy. Check-in and check-out were smooth, though the reception is in a different building about 4 minutes away at Dormio Resort, where you can also enjoy breakfast, a gym, and a kids’ playground 🏋️‍♂️👧. Overall, great value for money and highly recommended! ✅

I hate to even leave this review after the day I had, we visted Halstatt today and had the best day we’ve had in Europe thus far. Fast forward to checking into hotel, we came to address that was given in confirmation email only to find out we had to go 2km down the road to the resort to check in. After doing that we expressed that we thought by the pictures when we booked we would be staying at the resort and would like to change and we don’t mind the up charges, we waited 15 minutes for them to tell us that the couldn’t and that’s okay so we got room key and went back to the original house (hotel) rooms are spacious but have a funny smell and cold. WiFi that is given doesn’t pop up on the WiFi and shower doesn’t drain. All to top it off went to dinner and tried to order cocktail at 7:30pm for them to tell us they are not doing cocktails but can pour wine and beer, Again fine. Ordered appetizers and dinner was mid par but service from guy with tattoos was worse. Needless to say when we visit again in a few months this (resort) will not be on our list!!

I am very dissatisfied with the apartment. The cleanliness is very non-existent. The smell of the toilet comes out of the room. There are also many spiders in the apartment. The apartment is also full of dust. The reception is very far from the apartment. You have to take a car. And the amount paid in the apartment for services is very high, frankly, the worst apartment I have ever rented in my life

Very nice rooms! We were nicely surprised by the size of the room and the new bathroom. Good beer, friendly staff, nice atmosphere. However the staff didn't inform us about the fact that the breakfast is served in the main resort, hundreds of meters away from this Gasthof, we had to found out ourselves in the morning. We also received wrong WiFi password and had to ask the staff for the right one.

--The review is just for the restraurant--I checked for restaurants near the Dormio Resort Obertraun on Tripadvisor and this is the one that had 4 stars, the others only had 3.5 and looked trashy. Our meal was fresh and reasonably priced and service was friendly and efficient. The garden terrace was lovely.
1947 F — Google review
We went there twice within two days, because there were not too many choices in the town. On the first day, we ordered onion soup and mix grills(with chicken, pork, beef). The soup was good, but grill meat was too old. The second day, we decided to try fish and grill ribs. Both are good! Especially the fish dishes is recommended. Overall, it is nice restaurant with fair price. The restaurant opens at the weekend.
Heidi L — Google review
We first approached this restaurant on New Year's Day and were disappointed to be turned away (all tables had been reserved). But the atmosphere looked lively and comfortable, so we returned the next day. The food was excellent and the service was great. My only complaint was the smoking table near the main door, but the energy and liveliness of the locals sitting there made it tolerable. We liked it enough to go back the next day for lunch and were still impressed with the food.
Colleen F — Google review
Great fresh home-made local food. Try dumplings filled with meat. Service is very good and the staff friendly. However, be ready to wait for your food around half an hour. Reserving a table is also a good idea.

Restaurant Obertraun has received mixed reviews in the past, but recent visitors have found it to be a decent dining option. The food is described as great and very tasty, with generous portions and good value for money. The service is praised for being fast, attentive, and friendly. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also highlighted as cool and enjoyable. Despite some initial skepticism due to negative feedback, many guests were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness, food quality, and overall experience at Restaurant Obertraun.
Great place to eat. The steak was cooked perfectly. Dessert and drinks were also great. Highly recommend stopping by and having dinner.

Service was fast and kind. Great portion and tasted very good. Prices were reasonable. The restaurant is dog friendly !

The service was very nice. It was no problem that we were with a dog. We ordered schnitzel and cordon blue. The meat was juicy and tasty. The salad tasted good. We recommend
Paulina S — Google review
We were very reluctant to go there due to the reviews but in Obertraun we have very limited choices. I must say that our experience was very different. We went there twice and ordered the steak and both times the food was delicious. All the waiters were very helpful and kind. So a total 5 on the food. We sat outside, the atmosphere nothing special other than sitting next to the lake
Stephanos A — Google review
As mentioned by the earlier reviewer, this restaurant deserves a higher rating than it currently is! My Cordon Bleu was prepared perfectly, warm and crispy. Service was great as well. There was also a Halloween party going on that night and the restaurant was full in no time. Keep this restaurant as one of your dining options when in Obertraun!
Cheryl Y — Google review
We dined here twice during our stay and on the first night the food was delicious and service was quick and efficient. The second time service was slow and the food was dry and tasteless (we ordered the same meals both times). Our desserts were forgotten about so we had to follow up and they looked half heartedly thrown together in a rush. Seems like a hit or miss.

The restaurant is very big and has many tables. I was disappointed about the trout, it tasted less. It came with a few boiled potatoes and carrots.

Stunningly beautiful view, very cozy space with delicious food and drinks. Absolutely recommended.

Was very nice people but do not expect to get the room that was advertised paid a fortune for a little box room and for the breakfast in the morning expect just circle and bread was very limited food and drinks. cost an insane amount and don’t expect them to supply skis as you have to book through another company to ski on the mountain and there is another large sump of money. for everyone considering coming here just be heavily cashed up there are a lot better places to go with easier access to get there
Connor W — Google review
So happy to find a place to hide from the chilly summer. 4 degrees and raining. Completely fogged out. There was no view, only hot drinks and food that kept us warm. Thank you!
Suz L — Google review
It is a unique experience to enjoy the serenity of the mountain when all day-trip tourists have left after the evening, and to spend quiet moments enjoying the sunset and sunrise, or simply star gazing in absolute darkness at night. I stayed in a dormitory with 10+ beds. There are several toilets and a shower room on different floors, each for male and female. The facilities are clean. The restaurant is open at night and one can have dinner here until 9+ pm.
Jiunn W — Google review
If I could give the location 10 out of 5 stars, I definitely would! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to stay among the Alps situated above Hallstatt and I cannot recommend it enough! Please note that the only way to access the hotel is via cable car so plan to be at the cable car parking lot no later than 4p. We narrowly made the very last cable car of the day on our way up and just didn’t plan enough to know the schedule, so it worked out in our favor. Once you’re at the Lodge, anything you may need for a couple of nights in the mountains is there and ready for you. We loved the Wienerschnitzel so much! I can’t remember the name of the soup, but it had crispy friend potatoes (?) on top of it and it was to die for. We had to order dessert with vanilla sauce, almost like a cheesecake but in my opinion, better! The staff here were excellent and treated us very well, accommodating us with anything we needed. Take full advantage of the area and visit the lookout points, take a long hike, do some rock climbing, or just bring a book for the terrace views. They will wow you, for sure!
Tony S — Google review
After a hiking 🥾 we went to take a rest. Wanted to order but you have to go yourself order pay and bring to your table, Austrian way of cutting on personal trying to maximize the income. Food nothing special and quite expensive. But the view is outstanding wowwww.
Miodrag C — Google review
I loved the location! Up in the mountains, away from the cities and people! The fact that you had to take the cable car to get up to the peak/hotel was both a pro, and a con. However, overall, it was overwhelmingly pro because there was no crowds or clutter for relaxing and breathtaking events such as sunrise and sunset. If the cable car ran earlier/later, or the peak was more easily accessible, the slots to view these amazingly beautiful things would have been crowded with people. The owners of the lodge were incredibly friendly and helpful. I loved sitting and chatting with them about the mountain, the village, about life, and food. The upstairs dorm got a bit stuffy and warm in the mornings. Just wake up early and go experience the outdoors! You won’t like if you: miss the sunrise, miss the sunset, don’t go out and explore! So make sure you do all of those things!
Shaun L — Google review
It is an excellent restaurant on the top of the mountain where you can rest after a long walk between the three main points. It has traditional dishes and classic ones—significant variants of coffee and tea. You will get execcelent service here for a reasonable price, especially if you take in mind it’s on 2000 meters high. Highly recommend the place!

Evangelische Pfarrkirche Hallstatt is a stunning neo-gothic church situated in the heart of Hallstatt. Constructed from white limestone, it boasts an impressive pointed steeple and spacious interior adorned with large stained glass windows that flood the space with natural light. The church also houses a beautiful pipe organ frequently used for concerts and events. Positioned on a hill, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and village below, making it a popular spot for visitors to capture picturesque photos.
With the view behind, creates the famous and symbolic image of Hallstatt. In the inside, I wouldn't say anything interesting as the outside. As normal, it is a place of worship

Evangelische Pfarrkirche Hallstatt @ Hallstatt ⛪⛰️🇦🇹 📍 Protestant Church of Hallstatt The Evangelische Pfarrkirche is one of Hallstatt’s most iconic landmarks, its elegant steeple reflected in the still waters of Hallstätter See and framed by dramatic mountain peaks. We visited the church both by day and night during our 2-night stay. Inside, it’s peaceful and filled with soft natural light, while outside, the lakefront paths and nearby viewpoints offer postcard-perfect photo spots. 📸✨ One of the most magical moments was taking an evening walk after dinner. By then, the daytime crowds had left, and the town settled into a rare, serene quietness. The church stood beautifully lit against the darkening sky, and the gentle sound of water lapping at the shore made the scene feel timeless. 🧭 Tip: If you’re staying overnight, don’t miss a post-dinner stroll around the church and lakefront—you’ll see Hallstatt at its calmest and most enchanting.

Very simple church right in the middle of the town next to the marketplace. This church is the centerpiece of the town and really defines the postcard view of Hallstatt. You can get the view of this church from many angle. The church really brings the charm of the town to life.

Hallstatt Lutheran Church in the center of Hallstatt is the landmark of the whole town! During the day it is possible to look into it. That was built in the eighteenth century as a house of worship. The church is unmistakable and striking from almost all places in Hallstatt. Free admission. A bit of a paradox - everybody takes panorama pictures with it, but hardly anyone goes to.

A simple protestant church that greets all visitors the moment you get off the jetty at Hallstatt. Free entry altgough a donation would be appreciated.

This is the iconic landmark church you see from the Hallstatt panoramic view point. This is the structure that gives the unique picture postcard view to Hallstatt. Hallstatt Lahn is the place where the bus halting place is located. Everybody coming to Hallstatt via bus, comes to this place. This is where the stroll along the lake shore starts. Church is about a 10 mins walk along the walkway. You can walk in and see the interior or get to upstairs and take part n a Mass.

The Welterbemuseum Hallstatt is a cozy facility that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the area, spanning from its prehistoric past to the thriving Celtic culture and the ancient salt mining industry. The museum's exhibits feature a wealth of artifacts such as tools, pottery, jewelry, and other items of cultural significance.
This museum is a gem! While hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists were taking pictures out at the lake, I went into this amazing museum. The woman that works there spoke beautiful English, and was kind and welcoming. She answered all my questions. Because I was there with a tour, I could only stay an hour. I wish I could’ve stayed two or three hours. This museum was a top-notch museum and hardly gets any attention. When you go to Hallstatt, I would recommend spending at least an hour there.

Since it was raining today, we decided to visit this museum. It’s ok, rather interesting, but at 11 euros per person with the Guest Card, it’s not expensive but not super affordable neither. The main problem are the stairs. Not at all wheelchair accessible and if you have knee problems, for example (my mother’s case), it won’t be a comfortable visit to you. Also, the lady in the reception doesn’t speak English and American Express cards are not accepted. But I still think it’s worth a go.

There are adequate transport facilities within easy reach in terms of local buses, ferries and a train station across the lake which is accessed with the help of a regular ferry service. The Hallstatt Charnel House, also known as the Beinhaus or Bone House, is a small ossuary located in the grounds of the 15th-century Catholic Pfarrkirche in Hallstatt. Since 1600, bones have been exhumed from the overcrowded graveyard and neatly stacked inside the ossuary. The skulls are painted with decorative designs and names of their former owners, offering insight into their lives.
A very interesting tradition. Skulls are well protected and kept there. The entrance fee is really low and also info page's translation covers most of the languages.

Hallstatt Charnel House (Beinhaus) @ Hallstatt 💀⛪🇦🇹 📍 Beside the Catholic Church of Hallstatt The Charnel House is one of Hallstatt’s most unusual and historic sites, famous for its painted skulls and neatly arranged bones, a centuries-old tradition born out of limited burial space in the village. We passed by during an evening walk, but it was already closed for the day. Even so, the area around the Catholic Church was peaceful and atmospheric, with the lake shimmering in the fading light. From here, we followed the path around the church and back toward the village, enjoying the quiet streets now free of the daytime crowds. Even if you can’t go inside, the location offers wonderful views over Hallstätter See and a sense of the deep history of this tiny alpine town. 🧭 Tip: The Charnel House usually closes in the late afternoon, so visit earlier if you want to see the interior. For a different kind of charm, come in the evening for the peaceful walk and lake views.

Unfortunately it was closed when we visited there, so we couldn’t get in. However the view was so fantastic so I’d recommend to go there even if you can not enter the house.

A truly unique and fascinating experience! The Beinhaus at St. Michael’s Church is unlike anything I’ve seen before. The collection of over 600 decorated skulls, many with names and intricate designs, offers a haunting yet respectful glimpse into Hallstatt’s history and traditions. At the entrance, a very kind gentleman sells tickets and hands out informative leaflets in multiple languages, making the visit even more engaging. It’s small but well-preserved, and the setting by the church adds to the atmosphere. A must-visit for anyone interested in culture and history. Respectful photography is allowed, but be mindful of the sacred nature of the site. Highly recommend!

A small but unforgettable stop in St. Michael’s Chapel: over a thousand skulls, many hand-painted, reflect a centuries-old tradition from when the cemetery ran out of space. It feels peaceful, not scary. Entry is €2—cash only—and the visit takes about 10–15 minutes

2euro/person to enter the house, it's small but good to see many skulls and bones put on the wall. Worth for a visit while you are in Hallstatt.

Incredibly atmospheric old cemetery by the church. A wonderful place with a view from above on Hallstatt. Around the church square, you'll find a mass of narrow streets and labyrinths that will take you on a journey through time.

What an original and special place ! The lady named Margaret (I hope I write it well, otherwise I'm sorry!) who welcomes you is so nice and friendly!! She gives you a paper with the history of this place which is really interesting. (Available in a lot of languages). It is in the middle of the cemetery which is beautiful. Just across you have a pretty chapel too. One of my favourite places in Hallstatt.

(Translated by Google) The introduction to the Hallstatt Hotel strongly recommends that you must visit this place. I came here because the cable car was under maintenance. It is hot in summer, but it is worth it! The magnificent cliffs and the blue sky and bright sun are something that cannot be expressed by the camera. There are very few people hiking along the way. I thought I had taken the wrong road when I walked through the residential area and into the woods from the small road next to the mine! Although I didn't reach the waterfall, the journey was refreshing.

The road is mostly flat, but at the very end you will have to climb up a little. Even the road itself is quite picturesque, and the waterfall is absolutely wonderful. The journey there and back will take you approximately 2-3 hours. (Original) От Гальштадта, прямо от информационного центра на набережной, есть прямая дорога к этому замечательному водопаду. Coffee shop
Nestled in the vibrant Central Square of Marktplatz, Marktbeisl Zur Ruth is a delightful coffee shop that captures the essence of Hallstatt. This cozy spot is a favorite among locals, making it an ideal place to immerse yourself in the town's culture and forge new connections. Open from morning until night, it's perfect for grabbing a bite after exploring the square.
Superwoman runs this small pizza restaurant. The young pretty lady run the restaurant all by herself. No chef, no staff, no workers. Just she alone. Take order, served drinks, cook, serve food, clean up table, cashier. Everything. Pizza is good so is the beef goulash soup . The hot chocolate with rum is fantastic.

Not great but not terrible, for a place with that resident/tourist ratio. We had pizzas, it wasn't terrible but probably a frozen pizza. Local beer was good. Price was high for the taste but in the evening in Hallstatt, you don't have many options. So it was okay

We tried their pizza since most other options were closed, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The outside seating is charming, offering a great spot to soak in the local vibes while enjoying the meal.

Limited menu but does what it says! Located right in center of Hallstatt, you can order veggie pizza with local Das Bier and will not be disappointed. Nothing fancy, but cosy place and would recommend, if you are in mood for a quick bite post strolling in the majestic Hallstatt.

Simple 169 is a restaurant located in the picturesque setting of Hallstatt, offering a diverse menu featuring American, Austrian, French, Mediterranean, and Asian cuisines. The cozy ambiance provides the perfect backdrop for savoring a variety of dishes including burgers, sandwiches, steaks, and vegetarian options while enjoying a delightful view of Lake Hallstatt. Visitors have praised the fresh and delicious food prepared in front of them and commended the friendly service provided by the owner.
A wonderful experience - The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. The hostess made it a point to greet every guest in their own language, which added a lovely personal touch to the visit. Despite the long queue and a rush of guests, she kept her smile and enthusiasm throughout! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food—definitely better than I expected for a tourist spot! We tried the hearty tomato soup and carrot soup, flatbread with cheese and pesto, signature vanilla cream roll, and eggnog cake, and each dish was delicious. The flavors were fresh and satisfying. We loved this place so much that we visited twice during our stay in Hallstatt! This place deserves a much higher rating than the current 3.4! If you’re in Hallstatt, do yourself a favor and stop by. You won't regret it!

We had a really nice experience! Had to leave a comment here and 5 stars cos everything was great: to begin with the outside welcoming board with such nice sentences, the yummy cakes, and the super friendly and kind waitress. I love the apple cake so much that I even took 3 more portions for take away for my birthday. Only cash accepted but it was clear everywhere. 10 to the cook as well, the lady was also very nice. Would definitely go back next time in Hallstatt.

Absolutely delicious food served with superb friendliness! This is a unique self service place, they still care about how you feel about your meal and make sure you are comfortable. We loved everything we had... the pulled pork burger was perfect with such tender pork and that chewy rustic bun, and it is rare that i dont ask for extra for extra hot sauce or mustard for a burger, but this one came just perfectly flavored with just the right spice kick that i so love. We never thought tomato and carrot soup could taste so heavenly, there's something special about it, creamy but light and so flavourful. And the vegetable flammkuchen with that special pesto was so fresh and delicious! If this restaurant were in Vienna where we live right now, I would eat there regularly! Too bad it is so far away in Hallstatt and I'm already missing it. I love good food and a place with a positive vibe. This place has both. I wholeheartedly recommend this place for a happy meal. And to our delight, the price is much more reasonable than the other restaurants around!!

The customer experience was great. The waitress was so nice and welcoming and the food was good and the view was something else. Would definitely recommend it. They only accept cash during the time of my visit

The food was incredibly expensive for what it was but in saying that, it was the cheapest dine-in place we could find to eat in Hallstatt that night. We ordered a fish pasta that came with 4-5 tiny pieces of fish bits which just looked like canned salmon, for 20 euros ( not exaggerating- see photo). We ordered the flat bread which didn’t have much on it either. Definitely wasn’t very filling and not worth the price.

Hallstatt is a very cozy and sweet trip destination in Austria, and to find a place serving amazing food as SIMPLE 169 was totally worth it! Lydia (I hope her name is correct) took our orders very pleasantly, and I noticed she greeted each guest in their regional language. Being vegetarian, I always had difficulty in finding food options, but this place serves amazing home cooked soups, delicious flammkuchen and variety of deserts. Thank you Maria, for such delicious food 😄 Top food recommendations: Tomato chilli soup and vanilla cream roll

Very welcoming host. Prime location. Strongly recommended. The guesthouse name is Pension Leopoldine. We booked through agoda with the name Cafe restaurant Zum Muhlbach. The host is super kind! We felt very welcomed. He really made us feel home. He gave us directions in Hallstatt, recommended supermarkets, restaurants, etc. There is a staircase and he was so kind to help us with all the luggages. Keeping luggages after checkout is welcomed too. We stayed in the Mountain View apartment. The apartment is cute with a balcony and kitchenette. The beds are very comfy. We were very grateful to have reserved the apartment very last minute. We wished to stay longer but were unable to reserve the room for longer time as the town was super busy.

My stay at this hotel was absolutely wonderful! It was my first solo trip to Hallstatt, and after a long seven-hour journey from Germany, I was welcomed with a fantastic surprise: a complimentary upgrade to a room with a balcony and a stunning lake view. Ferenz, the host, was incredibly warm and attentive, making sure I had everything I needed to feel right at home. The hotel itself is spotless and cozy, with a charming, cabin-like atmosphere that’s both luxurious and inviting.

The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave, located on Krippenstein Mountain, offers a captivating experience for visitors of all ages. Upon arriving via cable car, a short walk leads to the entrance of the cave where guided tours showcase stunning ice formations and artistic installations. The tour lasts approximately 50 minutes and includes informative insights into the icy world below. Additionally, visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the Market Square in Hallstatt or take in panoramic views from the 'Five Fingers' viewing platform.
We loved this visit and the guided tour. You realise here how beautiful nature is. The caves are well preserved to make sure that they aren't being destroyed by tourism. The hike is very easy from the cable car. Superb views from the top of the mountain of the valley and lake. This is a must visit on a trip to Hallstatt.
Siddharth A — Google review
An amazing landscape and worth a visit. Take the cable car up to the middlestation. From there, it is a steep ascent of 15mins before you reach the cave entrance. We joined the guided tour, and the staff could speak in both German and English. Be warned that the duration of the tour is 50mins and even in the summer, temperatures inside the cave range from -3°C to 3°C. It was freezing and winterwear is highly recommended. The tour requires lots of walking, and ascending and descending steep, slippery stairs. And there's a (optional) suspension bridge to cross at the end. Plus with how dark the interior is, might be pretty dangerous for the old or those with mobility challenges. Minus 1 star because the tour group size was too big, which means those at the back had a hard time keeping up and hearing the guide. Plus the lights are switched on and off for only a short duration at each station, so photo time is very limited if you are at the back. Overall would recommend getting the ticket for the 2 caves. We decided not to get the All-in-one ticket as the view at 5 fingers is likely obstructed by the dense clouds/fog. The weather was bad even in the summer and you can see a preview of the view at the highest station via a live webcam on their website.
Cherie C — Google review
Very impresive tour. Its takes a bit of stamina/time if your going to the top but worth. You have to be prepared with atleast hoodie. Possible with shorts and hoodie. But if you are a bit cold person then i recommend atleast hoodie, jacket, trousers and maybe cap aswell. In there is about 500 stairs so it takes a bit but after walking whole top this was nothing🤣 Guide was also good guy but sometimes the group feels like bunch of monkeys. overall ots a good trip worth every penny.
Jakub H — Google review
Really disappointing... There is not much ice... mostly rocks. Maybe the time of year, but also the guide was not that interested in guiding. And in addition There us some climbing to do. Overall not a myst when visiting Dachstein
Avi G — Google review
From Dachstein you take gondola to the ice cave. After getting down at the middle station, you have to walk around 20 minutes uphill. During bad weather and for older people it might be challenging. There is guided tour which takes over an hour to visit the cave. It was definitely interesting to visit the cave, and see the mountain from inside, ice formations and listen to our guide. It's cold but not so cold, also its not slippery as we thought earlier. The way inside the cave was well maintained and covered to make it non slippery. Of course a sturdy shoe is good to have, however we saw some people wearing sports shoes.
Vinay K — Google review
This place was one of the highlights of our Hungary-Austria-Germany trip. We didn't even know it existed until our chateau owner suggested it, and we're so glad he did! The hike up to the gondola was gorgeous, and the ice cave itself was extremely cool. The whole thing was a great adventure for our pre-teens and teenagers as well -- fun for the whole family! Three additional notes: 1. Make sure you pack a hoodie for everyone, and go in pants and sneakers. If you don't have a hoodie packed, you can buy one at the gift shop before you take the walk up to the gondola. 2. Plan to eat lunch at the restaurant that's close to the base of the cave. It offers a great view from the mountain and good German food! (Also, there's a restroom there.) 3. If you're traveling with someone who isn't very mobile, they'll need to skip this excursion. The whole experience took about 3 hours, and it's a LOT of walking. There is a cafe next to the gift shop, so people could wait there for you, but it would be a long wait.
Sara S — Google review
How is it possible not to like? There are 2 caves: the Mammut one and the Giant Ice one. They have different opening hours. You have to take the cable car to the 1st stop. There is probably not time to do all in one day if you don't start early because 2nd stop has the 5 fingers viewing platform attraction and much more. The temperature inside is really low, so there is no point in coming without a jacket. One of our crew needed to be escorted back because he was freezing, and this made us lose precious time. There is also quite a walk up and down there. It's totally worth it. #amazingscenery

Cave
Dachstein Mammoth Cave, located in the Salzkammergut region, is one of Europe's largest karst caves with nearly 70 kilometers of explored passages. The guided tour offers a captivating exploration of the underground landscape, showcasing massive cave passages, narrow crevices, stone cathedrals, and evidence of powerful water formations. Despite its name, there are no mammoth fossils; instead, visitors can marvel at the intricate grains and fault lines in the rocks.
Impresive tour where you can find naturaly created cave from water/wind. In there is about 500 stairs so be prepared!😁 Temperature inside feels hood for warmer shirt/shorts or shorts/hoodie. We have got Benjamin as tour guide big shout out to this guy! Deserves all the good. Very kind guide, good speech, good jokes very friendly guy. Impressive biiiig cave formed by impressive nature- also suitable for people that have problems with limited space.. two stars missing as in this cave there are not really special attractions except the gigantic cave .. the ice cave has more „sparkles“.. besides I was disappointed by the carelessness of the guides- there were two of them but they both went in front and not one in front and one in the back- in the back there were two times people slipping without any interaction by the guides ( not sure if they noticed)
Evi N — Google review
There is nothing special about this cave, only it is really big. We were also pretty unlucky with our tour guide, who wasn't able to get his audiences attention or interest, because it was Really one of the most boring tours I have ever been on.
Petra — Google review
This is an interesting tourist spot. The "Mammoth" is a reference to its vastness. There is nothing related to a mammoth fossil or such. The grains, textures, and fault lines in the rocks and caves are amazing, particularly for people that love rocks. In a lot of places the caves gives a feeling of underground labyrinth, which reminds me of D&D games. But I can totally understand people that do not have much appreciation for rocks will find it boring. And certainly this tour was different from the nearby ice cave, which has a lot of light shows and music effects. All in all I loved this tour. Only thing was that the trip is mostly walking. (The guide did stop at the most beautiful spots to do some briefing, but all of them were brief.) And some parts of the tour was quite slippery due to dripping water. And the room is pretty chill (a few degree celsius above zero). So keep your coats on. Very young kids might get tired from the 45 mins of tour and need carrying. And there were quite some flights of stairs inside.

A fascinating and complex series of galleries that extend under the Dachstein mountains. The caves are caused by the natural erosion of limestone rock beneath the glaciers hundreds of meters deep in the heart of the mountain . Easy access pathways take you deep into the system. Ask about the bear skulls found there in ancient times. Giant cave bears hibernated here. Cave men lived here. What a place! Mysterious and

Dachstein Shark

Dachstein Shark is a popular attraction in the Dachstein region, offering stunning views and natural beauty. The area features the 5fingers viewing platform and a trail to the World Heritage Spiral, surrounded by unspoiled nature. In winter, visitors can enjoy skiing at the nearby Dachstein Krippenstein Freesports Arena and Dachstein West family ski resort.
Please when in Dachstein gletcher make sure to take the walk towards the shark. It's about 45mins, there is a big elevation drop at the beginning around the funicular station (you will need to climb if you take the same route back from the shark), but the environment is amazing. Different than the way towards the 5fingers. Less popular.

Very good hike approx 1,5h with some tempo back and forth ofc. bigger elevation at the start but the rest is really friendly. Pretty enviroment and mountains around. Approx in the middle you can check ice cave as well. There is a bit colder and at the bottom you can find big piece of ice just laying and chilling

40mins hike, with up and down the mountain road to reach the Dachstein Shark. Not an easy hike as it has steep ascend and descend, Snow already covering up most of the pathway. Weather was bad and visibility not more than 10m. Do check out the weather before making the trip and wear warm clothing and right footwear.

Mountain peak
Krippenstein is a stunning peak that offers a variety of activities throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy skiing in the winter, while summer brings opportunities for hiking, including snowshoeing and ski touring. The 5 Fingers observation platform provides breathtaking views of Hallstätter See and the surrounding area. The weather at the peak can change rapidly, so it's important to be prepared for varying conditions, even if it's warm at the base.
It is an amazing, beautiful view point. We were at the end of may. The weather could change quickly. When the sun is shining, t-shirt is enough however as clouds came, jacket was useful. 5fingers and the closest sights were easy to reach, the tourist paths were also clean. but when we went to the shark, we struggled with the deep snow. So my suggestion is that even if the weather is clean and warm at the parking place, be prepared for cold and snow at the top of the mountain.

It's just wonderful to enjoy the fresh air and great views at the top! Plus, it's a few degrees cooler in summer. (Translated by Google) I highly recommend this mountain. After a six-hour hike, there was beer at 9:00 a.m., but no Kaiserschmarrn. That didn't stop me from having beer. The local mountain staff were extremely friendly, seemed perfectly groomed and styled with their white curls. They also took great care of our physical well-being; we were spick and span without even showering. As soon as my muscles have recovered from the near-death experience, I'll be back...but by gondola. Weiters war es sehr um unser körperliches Wohlbefinden bemüht, wir waren ohne duschen wie geleckt. Sobald sich meine muskeln von der nahtoderfahrung erholt haben komm ich wieder....aber mit Gondel.

The last corner of meadow, surrounded by the threatening rock walls of the Dachstein area. Felt like the end of the world. There used to be a quiet, farmed alpine pasture here. Now the path is integrated into the Obertraun cycle path and you often have to get to the side because of the e-bikes rushing towards you. A little further if you follow the path you come to this small alpine pasture. Nothing spectacular, but very idyllic. Restaurant
The Schönbergalm restaurant, located in a popular tourist area, offers hikers and visitors the option to either hike or partially use mountain railways to reach it. The surprise lies in discovering such an exceptional dining establishment amidst this bustling location, making one eager to return solely for its offerings. This eatery stands out by serving some of the finest pork one has ever tasted – succulent and crispy on the outside yet tender within. The service is quick and efficient, leaving patrons satisfied with swift attention.
After the cable car ride, this is the only place where you will find yourself at the top of the mountain. With some local food on the menu, this restaurant is also good for children because it has a large play area for them to enjoy.

Restaurant
Nestled in the remote corner of Inneres Salzkammergut, at the beginning or end of the picturesque Koppental valley, lies Gasthaus Koppenrast. This popular spot is frequented by hikers, as it marks the starting point of the Koppenwanderweg trail along Koppentraun from Obertraun to Bad Aussee.
The experience at this restaurant truly deserves high praise. The food was incredible, with every dish perfectly crafted in both taste and presentation. From the starter to the dessert, every bite was a delight. Hats off to the chef, bravo! The service also stood out. The waiter was polite, skilled, and charming, adding a special touch to the whole dining experience. We really appreciated the warm and inviting atmosphere. Overall, this restaurant offers a dining experience that's both memorable and exceptional. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for great food and excellent service. Can’t wait to return!

Highly recommended restaurant in the surrounding of Hallstatt/Obertraun We ate there twice and had a perfect dining experience. All ingredients and food are perfectly cooked. In comparison to the prices and quality of Hallstatt restaurants, we have been very pleased. So if you can drive a bit, I find it to be a much better experience, it's also quiet and relaxing. I highly recommend the fish with the mushrooms which was excellent and this is coming from someone that rarely chooses this in restaurants. The schnitzel and the chocolate mousse are amazing as well.

We really enjoyed our meal. The English menu was helpful, but we also practiced our German. I had the boiled beef, which was great. The risotto with shrimp was exceptional. Super yummy. Staff was friendly and helpful. Thanks so much!!

The food here is truly great, and the service is warm and friendly too. After a day in Hallstatt fighting crowds at tourist trap establishments, we were pleasantly surprised to discover this lovely place just across the lake. There was plenty of parking with a beautiful stream nearby, and the restaurant was decently filled without being packed. The food was superb, fresh ingredients well seasoned, cooked and presented. Everything on the plate tasted great. We had boiled beef with vegetables and potatoes, and fish with homemade tagliatelle. The beef was fork tender with delicate flavours that were highlighted by the horse radish. The fish was also beautifully cooked, with a nice firm texture for the flesh and crispy skin. The tagliatelle was also finished to a perfect al dente. Dessert was sweet semolina dumplings with plum ragout and homemade elderflower flower ice cream. It wasn't too sweet and had the perfect balance of sour and sweet notes with a blend of hot and cold textures. Their menu apparently changes often to showcase the fresh produce of the season. Do note that the kitchen closes at 8:30pm, so do come early.

Hallstatt has been such a tourist trap, so stumbling upon this place was the biggest blessing. The food was the best we've had compared to 2 other restaurants we tried in the area. We had the beef broth with dumplings for starters and then the roast and schnitzels for mains and enjoyed an apfelstrudel and a dessert which had a marmalade surrounding it. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the setting of the guesthouse is simply stunning. Absolutely recommend this restaurant.

Booked well in advance and asked for a sample menu. I was pleased to be told that the menu changed daily. So was looking forward to the menu on arrival. Great setting close to the river. A lovely warm welcome from the staff on arrival followed by excellent service. The food was as expected. Well presented, exceptionally tasty and left us wanting more. We were to full for desert but the ones that were coming out of the pass were looking good. Thank you all for a great evening and great memories.

Day 5

Keep it simple
For day 5, these 2 places should be enough to fill your day with something exciting to do in Obertraun. Start the day with Koppenbrüller Cave and make your way through the city to get to Dachstein glacier. This should take about 3 hours of your day.

Koppenbrüller Cave is a beautiful and less crowded cave compared to others in the Dachstein region. The cave is relatively young and active, with powerful water rushing through it at various points, allowing visitors to truly feel the force of nature. Visitors are provided with lights for the tour, making it an enjoyable experience for children. The guided tour is about 45 minutes long and takes visitors through the cool 5°C interior of the cave.
The staff was very friendly. We enjoyed a private tour because no one else was queuing at 14:30. Interesting experience, pack a jacket... it's extremely cold inside 5°C.

First of all, it was closed due to avalanche damage when I got there. I poked around a bit anyway, and it does seem to be a very cool cave. So when they reopen it (don't know when) I would definitely recommend a visit! The surrounding nature is also very worth hiking/biking through. There are really great trails that go very far through the alps in this area. The river is very beautiful. It is within walking distance along nice trails from the Dachsteinhöhle train station, or you can take the train directly there (one stop further). The restaurant nearby is really amazing but expensive.

It's one if the 3 caves you can visit in the vicinity of Obertraun. It's located in the valley and you rech it by foot, walking a very picturesque path from Obertraun. The guide made a very good impression, was well informed and could answer questions at the end of the tour. I liked this cave because it was very raw. Without any flashing lights, music or silly amusement.

Glacier
Dachstein Glacier, located in Styria's highest mountain, offers year-round snow cover and stunning panoramic views. Visitors can take a cable car up 3,000 feet to witness the transformation of scenery into misty clouds and sheer cliffs. The glacier features 3 drag lifts and a chair lift for skiers, as well as a suspension bridge with breathtaking views. Additionally, there is an ice palace showcasing intricate ice sculptures.
This is where you need to put your gps for parking. The road is quite steep and barrow to get there but doable. We secured our tickets the day before via their website, we booked for the suspended bridge + ice palace. You need to take a gondola to get to the glacier. Up there, you will see breathtaking views, i was speechless. The suspended bridge is really strurdy it doesn't move at all. I didn't see any water refill station up there. There's a restaurant and boutique at the top. I would 100% recommend, worth every penny.
Maude M — Google review
When we arrived, there was an issue with the elevators, and they initially said ticket sales were on hold. However, there was very little information provided, and no communication in English. We had to ask other tourists for updates. Eventually, ticket sales resumed. The views at the top were beautiful, but we ended up waiting two hours in line to get down. The scenery is stunning, but the organization could definitely be improved.

Dachsteinstraße glacier. Attraction at an altitude of 3000 meters. At the entrance there is a toll road costing 20 euros per car - when you take the cable car up, you must validate the parking ticket and then there is no 20 euro charge when you leave the road. Very large parking lot (there are several parking lots) short walk to the turn for the cable car. You must book a place in advance otherwise it is not certain that you will be able to go up (very crowded) each cable car about 45 people. For holders of a local Schladming cable car, the cable car is free. (Very high costs for a family about 57 euros per adult). About 10 minutes up to the second station, which is 2995 meters high. Very cold and there is fog around (can spoil the experience). In addition, this station has several attractions for free / for an additional fee. You can go down to the snow at the bottom, there is a 360-degree circular track (sky way) amazing views from all directions. There is a restaurant and a cafe on site (very reasonable price in a cafe). There is a large balcony for sitting (cold....) 2 additional attractions: Ice Palace + Bridge - The bridge is nice, 100 meters long, connects the points and is all in the air in a dome. Then you enter the Ice Palace, which has ice figures that are nice and pretty, but in my opinion a high cost (47 euros) for a family. On a cold day of 3 degrees, we walked around the entire upper part for about 2 hours+ and then returned.

Pizza restaurant
Pizzeria Kegelbahn in Hallstatt offers a unique dining experience with its delicious pizzas and incredible location. Situated close to the ferry point of Obertraun and the railway station, it's a convenient choice for visitors. The restaurant stands out as one of the few places open until 22:00, making it a popular spot for late dining. Guests can enjoy generous portions of food served by friendly staff in a spacious setting.
There are only a few restaurants in the area, but this one turned out to be a good choice. It offers a wide variety of dishes. We ate there twice and tried the Marguerita Pizza, Texas burger, and Fit Salad—everything was delicious. The service was fast and courteous. Overall, it was a very good experience.
Cornel P — Google review
Second time here. Before this visit, we only ordered pizzas. This time, I decided to try their Texas burger. My friends ordered spaghetti bolognese with meat sauce and their seafood pizza. Burger: The fries are by far the worst part of the meal. Just casual frozen fries from the supermarket, served with the only sauce option (ketchup). Honestly, they would do better to just remove the fries and cut the price. Speaking of price, the burger costs €20. I haven’t had any burgers in Austria before, so I have no idea what’s considered normal, but compared to the pizzas (about €5 cheaper), it doesn’t feel worth it. The burger itself was the most “alright” burger I’ve ever had. One thing I want to point out is the size. It might not seem like it from the photo, but the burger is huge—not tall, just super wide, more like a smash burger. The ingredients are well chosen (egg, cheese, paprika, onion, lettuce…), and it feels fresh. The bun is okay—nothing spectacular, but not terrible. Overall, for the burger, a solid 6/10. It reminded me of the old McDonald’s burgers (on steroids) I occasionally had and liked as a kid. If they cut the fries and lowered the price a bit, it would be a 7/10. Spaghetti: Nothing really special. What you see is what you get. There’s nothing wrong with it, but I feel like I could make spaghetti like that at home (maybe even better) — 5/10. Seafood pizza: This is probably the best pizza you can get here. It’s not the best pizza I’ve ever had, but it’s definitely far above average. Compared to the other five I’ve tried here, this is the only one where I thought: yeah, that’s really good — 9/10.
Michal P — Google review
I stayed at the Dormio Resort just next to this shady pizzeria. Came to try their pasta but they make the worst pizza in the world. It was like a fried bread with too much salt, not properly baked. Even the meat had a foul smell & taste. When I complained to the waiter to change it he said he cannot change it but he can fix it. Horrible place with horrible food! I hope we my family doesn’t get sick because of this bad food.
Rajat K — Google review
Came here as it was the only late evening dining option in the area and was not disappointed. Mixed grill and cream-tomato pasta were both great with a big portion; really filling and satisfying. The garlic soup with croutons was the ultimate highlight; the soup was deep in flavour and the croutons were crispy and complemented the soup really well. The best part was that all the food came really hot and fresh; perfect for our break from the cold rainy weather outside!
Jie T — Google review
Pretty tasty and simple meal with clean flavours - nice staff and relatively quick service. Had the spaghetti bolognese which was a generous serving. Great outdoor seating area.
Gabin S — Google review
Avoid the Pasta at All Costs! If you're looking for the worst Aglio Olio, you've found the place. As you can see from the photo, the pasta tasted like it had been boiled for 30 minutes – absolutely mushy. Seriously, do NOT order the pasta here. The coke was probably the best thing on the menu.
Sungmin L — Google review
Came for a dinner on a public holiday - it was one of few places that were open. The garlic soup that so many Google reviewers praised is, I'm pretty sure, an instant Knorr with some extra garlic added and croutons made of leftover pizza dough (hopefully not leftovers of other people's pizzas). I also had a salad which would be okay-ish if it wasn't for a pile of mostly expired rucola that they placed on top. First time in my life the mozarella in a caprese salad was its hard, smoked version, but nevermind. The pizza seemed more or less acceptable. The plates were dirty. The service was alright. To sum up, other than in a dire situation of no food options - I do not recommend. I would have been much better off going to bed without a dinner, rather than eating there. Picture of rotten rucola for a reference.
Alicja B — Google review
This pizza is fantastic, it just needs to work on the dough, the sauce, the cheese, the crust, the toppings, the seasoning, the temperature, the slice size, the texture, the flavor balance, the freshness, the presentation, the portioning, the aftertaste, the delivery time, and, well… actually just being edible.
