Lookouts
Waipiʻo Valley Lookout is a breathtaking scenic overlook that offers visitors stunning panoramic views of the ocean, river valley, and dramatic cliffs. Nestled on the northeastern coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, this enchanting valley is often referred to as a "Shangri La," due to its remote beauty and rich history. As you venture into Waipiʻo Valley, you'll be captivated by its lush landscapes featuring cascading waterfalls, vibrant taro fields, and serene black sand beaches.
Visited Waipi'of Valley as part of the round the big island tour with my partner in May 2024. The views of the valley from the lookout were stunning. Normally you can go down to valley, but when we were there the road was closed to tourists and accessible by locals only. I don’t know if this was just temporary, but if you can go down now it's not recommended to walk as the road is steep and a 4x4 is recommended not a car. If you do walk down its recommended to get a lift back up.if your visiting the big island you must put the Waipi'o Valley on your bucket list of places to see the views are worth it. Breathtaking and idyllic view of the valley. Mesmerized by this view and wants me to sit down and watch this all day with a cup of coffee. The sound of waves on the black sand beach and the greenery patches on the mountains and breezy air. What a view. I’m flattered and must visit.
Jagadeesh R — Google review
Beautiful spot to take in the scenes of the Waipi'o valley, the beach and the waterfall from an aerial perspective. There was hardly any crowd and the views were spectacular. A short walk down from the parking, and there are restrooms on site.
Jubin E — Google review
Beautiful look out point. You cannot go down into the valley unless its guided. The view point gives a wide view of the valley and it is stunning.
Majury A — Google review
Please respect the locals who live down in the valley and DO NOT try to drive down there. Honor the road closed sign. The view from the public lookout is spectacular! Mahalo!!
ZombiRN1 — Google review
WORTH VISITING this place….. Absolutely Stunning VIEWS…. It offers stunning views of Waipio Valley, including its dramatic cliffs, lush vegetation, and the sea stretching out to the west.
Alpesh P — Google review
Great view. Lookout only now. We have driven down in the valley in 2015 and earlier. Only locals now can go down. I get it, they are tired of all the tourists. Still a great view to stop by.
Keith H — Google review
It's absolutely worth the drive. the beauty and sacredness of the area speak for itself. The valley is on private property and is not open to the public, but the lookout is open. There are tours available for around $175.00. I didn't feel it necessary to go into the valley, but others might.

Waterfall
Nature & Parks
Hiilawe Falls is a famous waterfall in Hawaii, plunging over 1000 feet due to a lava flow that created large cliffs. It's located in the Waipio Valley and can be visited as part of a small group waterfall tour that includes other major waterfalls like Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls. The journey to Hiilawe Falls involves crossing streams, hiking through coffee forests, and swimming across pools.
Absolutely gorgeous. Mild hike up to the waterfall. Water is cold but a must see when visiting Oahu.
CARLOS L — Google review
This is an elusive place. Like many other reviewers, we weren't able to find the falls. First, if you enter this place in Google Maps, the directions will take you down Mud Lane (the name itself is a hint...), then a left turn on Cane Haul Road. What the directions do not specify is that: (1) Mud Lane turns into a downward, unpaved road only passable with a high-clearance vehicle for the last 2.5 miles (right after the sign that reads "END COUNTY ROAD"); (2) Cane Haul Road is barred by a barrier after 100 yards, then it's overgrown with vegetation that makes it unwalkable, not to mention the "Private Property - No Trespassing" signs. As an alternative, I suggest stopping 0.8 miles after the pavement ends. You'll find a broken-down, turquoise car wreck there, and a gate. Although the gate has a warning sign next to it cautioning you that "native species are at risk," and that "trespassing may spread Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death disease," you could bring clean shoes and walk the nearly straight forest road that leads you to the Lalakea Stream. It's about 1.5 miles east-west, fairly flat, through a eucalyptus forest (uncharacteristic of Hawaii landscape). When the road makes a right turn, you'll find some trails to the left leading to the stream, some swim holes, and a series of small waterfalls (Waiholoa Falls, surely not as impressive as the Hi'ilawe Falls), but a good place to refresh yourself (see my photos). The road seems to continue, and perhaps leads to the proverbial Falls, but we chose not to go any farther.
Fabrice N — Google review
Couldn't get to the falls. It's down a private road with zero signs that say private property/private road. Do not take Cane Haul Road to get here. You will need to find a different route. I haven't found one yet... but just don't take Cane Haul Road because you will NEVER get to the falls. You just end up on some property with zero no trespassing signs. It's just got a locked gate at some point down the road. A road that you have to do a 78 million point turn to turn around on. It's a skinny one lane road with some drops on the sides. So be careful if you choose to go down this road. You WILL have to turn around and leave at some point if you do attempt this road. It totally feels like a Hills Have Eyes type of road anyways. Like I said.... find a different route. I will post an update if/when I find an actual road to the falls.
Irehs G — Google review
wade the water, it’s a hike to the falls 📸Tim
Jayson S — Google review
Road is closed by way of Mud road. We found out the hard way and had to back track. There is no cell signal and it is only even possible by Jeep.
Cindi C — Google review
Google, your instructions were completely wrong. NOTE: There is no way to view this waterfall without crossing PRIVATE PROPERTY. In addition Mud Lane is only partially paved and would be considered “off-roading” at best.
Monica G — Google review
This waterfall is the best in Hawaii! As others have noted, the "trail" does go through private property and it's not cool to trespass, but the river is public :) Be careful and leave no trace!
Josh K — Google review
The falls themselves are inaccessible, but since they are about 1,450 feet high, you don't have to be close to view them. Be aware that the only way to gain access to the base of the falls requires one to go through private land, and doing so without permission is both uncool and illegal. The black sand beach is worth spending several hours! The road leading to both is no joke. It requires a high-clearance 4x4. No, your AWD sedan will NOT make it. I would give my own Subie Outback only a 50/50 chance. Plan for a half hour to get down, with some skill and an extra set of eyes in the passenger seat. It's one-lane with a few wide-ish spots, suspension-stressing holes and rocks, and a LOT of opportunities to lose paint or a fender. But if you have the equipment or are in good enough shape to handle this very difficult hike, its worth every moment.

Nestled in Honokaa-Kukuihaele, the Honokaa Country Market is a beloved spot offering an exceptional culinary adventure. Locals rave about its diverse selection, including fresh produce, grass-fed meats, and locally crafted beers. The food counter is a highlight, serving up delectable soup and deli sandwiches that have garnered high praise. Visitors also appreciate the warm hospitality of the family-run establishment.
This is a fabulous little market, and the deli is even more fabulous! This is truly THE BEST BLT in the world!! Also, the Greek sandwich was packed full of flavor and tasted authentic. We were in Greece just a few weeks ago and it rivaled some of our favorites there. We highly recommend this as a lunch stop. Ashley (the owner) is so nice and helpful too!
Jacqui J — Google review
Literally my favorite sandwich shop. The BLT is unbelievable. And I’m a big fan of the turkey club subbed on jalapeño cheese bread. Super fresh, local ingredients, fun random items, delish baked goods, so much homemade, super friendly. 100% recommend checking them out. They’re about to open for dinner also. ❤️
HeatherFeather — Google review
The sandwiches are insanely good! Soooo good and the staff is so sweet! Fresh bread and the bacon is perfect (love crispy bacon).
Danielle M — Google review
Great food, consignment art pieces and jewelry. Obscure drinks you can't find elsewhere and they sell artisan fresh baked bread for a reasonable price.
Tyler M — Google review
Honokaʻa Country Market is a true small-town gem! Havok greated us at his family-run spot with the warm, charm of Honokaʻa. It has a great community vibe. The vegetarian options are delicious and made with super fresh, local produce. You’ll also find amazing artisan treats and handmade goods from local makers. It’s the perfect stop to grab something tasty, support local, and feel right at home.
Tejal C — Google review
You absolutely must stop at this market! The food is phenomenal and the family that runs it is so lovely. They offer a bunch of local products from produce, awesome looking cuts of grass fed meats, kombucha, beers and cocktail drinks from Hawaii, locally made soaps, and a nice selection of market items. The food counter serves soup and deli sandwiches that are seriously bomb! We tried the new Ham and Cheese which was literally the best ham I’ve ever had, not to mention the gooey cheddar, onion crisps and caramelized onions with the lilikoi BBQ being the perfect topping combination. The highlight for me was probably the homemade Poi bun that it came on, perfect texture with a slight sweetness. We also tried the plain Poi roll which I wish I had a dozen more of. They’re topped with sea salt and don’t even need butter they have such a good flavor. The service was top notch, friendly, local, and family run. The market vibe is fun, welcoming, and accommodating. I would go out of my way to drive back here to try some more of the food options. The sandwich portions are huge. It was jam packed with meat and flavor. Seriously do yourself a favor and do not pass this place up !
Bethani D — Google review
Stopped here for lunch and it was amazing. What a great place for high quality food. Sandwich was huge with focaccia fresh out of the oven, quiche was delicious, fruit was getting delivered from the farm so got some of that too and it was wonderful. Great stop, highly recommended.

I went to this place since it has been the only one available on a Monday evening. Turns out, this little diner offers amazing sandwiches and tasty smoothies! I had a juicy Greek sandwich and a mango smoothie. With every sandwich you can choose from a variety of chips, too.

This is a must stop if you are going through town. Michael took his time with us showing us a bunch of options for what we were looking for. We bought one of his pieces because we loved the stories he told and pictures he showed us of a related piece being developed. We didn't just want a piece of art, we wanted a piece of Michael. We will surely return next time we are on the Big Island!

Full Disclosure… I met Michael through a mutual friend and I now consider him to be a dear friend as well…. Michael is a very gifted artist, and an even better person. His gallery is tastefully decorated with his work and select pieces by incredibly talented local artisans.

And if you're looking for a perfect gift, there are so many items to choose from. The more you look, the more you will see💝

Beautiful works of art. Michael chatted with us for probably half an hour and was very friendly and had great vibes! Bought some pretty sterling silver coffee bean earrings for $48 (which I think is affordable)
Hayley M — Google review
Michael was one of the treasured individuals we met on our vacation. He is a great, kind, humble and unassuming person. His gallery is simply superb. At every turn and in every space, thoughtfully presented, are beautiful and powerful works from many artists and Michael himself. We fell into a long conversation about our different creative interests, that was so very enriching. Just on passion alone we would give this amazing place 5 stars but there is so much more. Both the place and the person are a rare and valuable find. Michael, I owe you a photo of the un-mounted work we purchased of yours framed and matted as promised in the Eastern Black Walnut frame I have made for it. I will be in touch to get your email so we can send you shots of the completed project. Cheers. Mahalo.

Beautiful shop! Definitely need to stop by here to get some amazing, hand made treasures! The hand painted silk scarves are wonderful and unique, the jewelry is beautiful, the quilts are great and there is so much more to look at either for yourself or as gifts! Love, love, love! One of my favorite stops!

Chocolate factory
Nestled on Mamane Street, the Honoka'a Chocolate Co. FACTORY STORE beckons chocolate lovers with its irresistible aroma wafting through the air. Located in the historic Hasegawa building, this charming shop continues a sweet legacy by crafting artisanal chocolates from locally sourced cacao, including beans grown right above town.
We had an amazing experience here. It was fun trying the different chocolate samples and the girl that helped us was extremely knowledgeable and nice! The bars are pricier ($10-15) than your standard chocolate found in stores but you can't even compare the quality and ingredients! We ended up buying 5 bars and had 0 regrets! Definitely coming back here.
Bosko M — Google review
We took the VIP tour (me, my wife, and my 12 year old daughter) and I am so happy we did. We learned so much about the cacao growing and chocolate making process. We ate EXCELLENT chocolate, and brought some home to enjoy and share with family. Mike knows his stuff and it was great to learn from someone who is so passionate about creating the best possible product.
Kevin C — Google review
We just had the BEST experience visiting Honoka’a Chocolate! The owners were there when we visited and could not have been more welcoming. We also had such a memorable time with Naghme, who was offering samples of their chocolates. She was incredibly sweet and patient with our four kids—answering all of their many questions with such kindness and excitement. She really took the time to make each of them feel included in the tasting, which made the experience extra special for our family. They were fascinated by the different flavors and each picked out a bar of chocolate that didn’t even last a day! We left not only impressed with the chocolate itself, but also touched by the warmth and hospitality we felt from everyone there. This is without a doubt a must-stop for us whenever we’re back on the island—an awesome and truly memorable experience!
Shelby N — Google review
This chocolate is to die for, but honestly the staff bring it all together. My friend Josh and I did the vip tour with the owner Mike and it was a treasure trove of knowledge. Not to mention the delicious chocolates we got to taste and even the chocolate "coffee" we got to taste! We loved it so much we literally bought 2 of each bar they had! Honestly such a great gem!
Nikolas P — Google review
I don't usually write reviews but felt like I needed to write one. This review is not about the owner, doggy, store, or even the yummy chocolate. This review is about the service we received. My sister and I looked for a "Chocolate Factory" All day and came across this Co towards the end of the day. Now, I know I did say towards the end of the day, I get it. We had walked in at 1525, the store closed at 1600. We were greeted outside by the owner and his wonderful pup, he was so inviting. Felt so awesome and was looking forward to walking in with the same warmth, sigh! Well, We walked in and walked right up to the bar/service table and was not greeted with a welcoming hello or even "welcome in". We were handed a menu and all of a sudden chocolate chips were being laid down one after another. We (Sister and I) attempted to ask questions and were rudely cut off every time we tried asking questions about each of the flavors... we were being rushed!!!! We were being so rushed we eventually stopped asking questions. Meanwhile, We did try engaging in conversation wirh the employee but again got cut off. At one point sister asked if we could get a cup of tea/coffee whatever the lady had just poured for the other two customers that left. We got a "No, I am not making anymore, but you can have whatever's left in that pot, and it's on me" We didn't even get a chance to ask what was in the pot before the cup was sitting in front of us.Now, my sister did take the cup and walked over to the creamers that were sitting on the counter. Sister did pick it up and smell it saying how yummy it smelled. The lady grabbed it and when I asked to smell it she rudely said "its not supposed to be touched by customers" My sister apologized multiple times stating that she didn't see a sign, she was super embarrassed. The whole visit became very uncomfortable, judgmental, stressful, unwelcoming, and flat out hurried. Now, both of us sisters did buy some chocolate not because of her hospitality but for the warm welcome we got from the owner and the dog outside. We believe in supporting local not rude employees.
Tabatha S — Google review
Awesome to do a free chocolate testing of 9 different varieties! The dark chocolate with coconut and rum flavor was our fav! The chocolate bar is on a bit expensive side ~$13-15, worth trying 1-2 bars!!
Preyas S — Google review
Sadly, our experience was horrible. We met the owner and his dog and he was great. Once he left and the employee was left alone, she rushed us through the samples with a dismissive attitude. She came across as annoyed for any questions that were asked and her answers were short and clipped. It was uncomfortable because it was clear she wanted to close the store for the day. Two other people that had been in the store with us, felt uncomfortable and left. The employee really did the company a dishonor in her actions.

We made a quick stop here and had an amazing experience! Definitely recommend tasting some chocolate and hearing about how all the different flavors are made!

Honokaʻa Public House is a local pub in the heart of Honoka'a, offering a mainland vibe while exploring the Big Island. The homey and friendly atmosphere, along with well-prepared non-greasy food, makes it a must-visit. They have a good selection of local brews and delicious dishes like Greek pizza and pastrami sandwiches. The staff is welcoming, and visitors can enjoy karaoke nights with great music.
Last place open in town on a Wednesday night at 6:30 PM. So glad we found this local place. We had pizza/beer and listen to local sing karaoke. Service is great, and you can taste the mozzarella on the pizza.

I was on a deadly serious mission to try this Pub's signature pastrami sandwich. Let me preface this review by saying that I'm from New York, so I KNOW pastrami! I'm gonna cut straight to the chase, sandwich broke da mouth 100%! I've honestly never had a pastrami on rye that even came close to being as good. Everything about it was perfect, but it was the way the beef was seasoned and cooked that really set it apart. It had the texture of a slow cooked pot roast that was thinly sliced and piled high. It was incredibly satisfying to the mouth with every bite. And the pub was so cute and had such a welcoming vibe! I'd never been there before and was alone, but as soon as I sat myself down at the bar, Maile greeted me and we developed an instant rapport. She was an absolute doll and we had so much fun talking story and sharing laughs. I can't wait to return with my friends and family. I had such an amazing and memorable experience! A five star rating just isn't high enough!

This place has a killer Pastrami on Rye and AMAZING pizza. The crust was perfect and the red sauce was so flavorful! The building has a quaint old historic vibe and they have TVs for sports viewing.

Food was so delicious! We tried Philly cheese steak sandwich and pizza. I loved that I had an option to pick my toppings. I ordered one slice it was more like a half of a whole pizza 😅 Again, service could have been better but for some reason the guy who was there was not very friendly!
Ghazal K — Google review
It's amazing how one wrong thing changes your entire perspective of a place. For me it was my burnt tater tots that can be seen in my photo. The supreme pizza was delicious, as was the pastrami dog. The cheesy bread was outstanding! But burnt tater tots are what I'm going to remember most and is why Honokaa Public House won't be my first choice for a place to eat in the future.
Toni K — Google review
I didn't know what I was getting into. I was just driving around with my family exploring, and we got hungry. This place is just wonderful! It reminds me of little hole in the wall places back home with food that blows the mind. I had the much mentioned pastrami on rye. It was the best sandwich I ever had. The best, hands down, 6 years on this earth living all over the United States, and this sandwich was perfect. I was lucky to eat at the Carnegie Deli (before they closed) and Katz delicatessen visiting NYC as a young man. Prior to this, they were tied for number 1, they are now number 2. This we wonderful little restaurant had meat that was so flavorful, moist, perfect seasoning, bread not overpowering, but adding to the sandwich. The sauerkraut and horseradish were also compliments adding to not overtaking or the likes. Dressing was also just enough. The combination as stated was perfect. I was planning on taking half home for later...didn't happen! Couldn't stop eating it all right there. Oh and not to make this secondary but the staff were friendly as could be. As a sidenote I had an Arnold Palmer and that too was wonderful. Somehow this lovely little place finds great products, add-ons, etc that others can't. Just amazing!!

DON’T GO HERE! Poor, Poor, Poor. Service. We went by the restaurant at 4:30 this afternoon and asked the only employee out front (male around mid 30’s) what time they closed tonight. He replied 8:00. We returned to have a quick bite for dinner at 7:40, after a needed nap from driving all day, and was turned away. The employee recognized us from earlier and I mentioned what he had told me. I informed him that it would have been nice if he had informed us earlier when last call for food was earlier than the time he gave. He basically told me tough luck, so we had to go to the market for quick eats. Whoever owns this establishment needs to get BETTER employees who can communicate clearly with their customers.

First time here. Came after receiving a recommendation from a local. Did not disappoint. Got a cheese pizza and a pepperoni pizza. We left full and happy!

Everything about this place is great. Parking easy, food awesome, service awesome, patio awesome, inside awesome, prices are great!! Chef Jeff truly takes care in his recipes. We had the Rustic Pizza and Lasagna. The bread and salad come with the meal. Everything was homemade from the meals, to rhe bread to the salad dressing were all delicious. We can't wait till we come back and can stop in again. Kudos to the Chef and his staff!

Cafe El Mondo is a really cute place. The pizza is good and the lemon drop cocktails are superb. Live entertainment was lovely. A great excuse to visit the sleepy town of honokaa.

I found this place to be charming. I ordered the special spaghetti with meatballs and an iced tea. It was delicious. The meatballs were so tasty and the sauce was amazing. It was served with thick cut toasted garlic bread. It had a nice crisp texture on the outside. There was only one waitress and she was on top of everything. No one waited long. Excellent experience.

Extra star for being the only open restaurant in Honokaa on a Tuesday evening. Had an nice long chat with the other customers seated on the patio (because patrons are not allowed to sit inside until 7:30pm). OK food. Nice server.

Had a wonderful late lunch here. The pizzas were freshly created and baked. Every change that we wanted to a pizza on the menu was possible and not at all an issue. Very cheerful waitress and very nice music by a live musician!

Cool little restaurant with great ambiance. Food was yummy. The service was great and everything was spread out with a good pace to enjoy drinks, appetizers, and our meal.

Andrade’s Honokaa Cafe is a family-owned restaurant in Honokaa that has been serving delicious meals since 1924. The cozy atmosphere and heritage make you feel right at home. Their specialties include the chicken pesto sandwich served on sweet guava bread and homemade Island Beef Stew, perfect after a day of hiking in Waipio Valley. Visitors also recommend their tasty meat sandwiches, pies, and pork dishes.
This is not a joke. The best food I’ve had in 3 years solidly. I would state that this is better than food exceeding the 40$-60$ range. It was made in house, by a family for a hundred years. The stew is made with bone Marrow to allow it to really bring out warm colors. The server was the most respectful and most kind hearted individual I’ve met in a while. And the cook as well granted us all a warm smile brewed over generations. This place deserves more than it has. It’s humble, homey, and delicious. If I ever come here again within 60 miles. I would gladly eat here.

Charming and attentive couple with amazing food and great conversation. The Monday fish special is my new favorite weekly outing with perfectly marinated oil and tomato sauce and salad dressing.

Excellent food and hospitality at this Cafe is truly unique. We ordered the Aqua Pasa, Chicken Pesto Sandwich and the Lilikoi-Glazed Ham Sandwich. We also tried the freshly baked macademia nut pie with ice cream, the pie was very delicious and moist. So glad we decided to stop by this family run Cafe. Highly recommend this Cafe.
Shruti S — Google review
This is the quintessential mom and pop restaurant. The husband greeted us and jokingly called himself the waterboy and waited on us the whole time we were there making pleasant conversation and getting to know us. His wife the cooking professor came to our table and explained what was available. They make stuff in small batches and some had been eaten clean out. It was a wonderful experience and we will come back every time we are in town
Tony E — Google review
We loved the warm, homey atmosphere! Had the Portuguese Bean soup, and Marlene's family pork dish that was the special of the day. Both were delicious. My husband had the Lilikoi-glazed ham which was good as well. We loved learning about the town and buildings from Marlene and Archie. A great find!
Linda C — Google review
Yes. This is a must. It is a very nice older couple. The building has obviously been newly updated (very simplistic and tasteful). But the real star is the food (or the man who is wonderful to chat with). I normally am not a fan of sweet bread but this was just so tasty. My husband and I shared the chicken pesto sandwich and the turkey sandwich. Not really sure which was my favorite bc they were both so good. Definitely put this on your must try list. Also some very cute shops with nice vendors in the town.
Mandy G — Google review
Mr and Mrs Andrade have been married for over 50 or 60 years.and were nice enough to cook and serve our food personally. They told us about the history of the town, the restaurant, and had visited my town as well. The food was incredible and the conversation was like family. Make sure they are open because they only work select times. It is well worth planning your trip around.

Archie and Marlene are amazing people! You can see the joy and pride they have in running the cafe through their interactions with their customers. We were lucky to get a table after a short wait and had a great time dining here. The food was fantastic, but Archie and Marlene were the ones that made our experience great!

Randomly found this place to have lunch because good reviews on Google. It was surprisingly good! We ordered Chicken Katsu and Hamburger Steak, both tasted very delicious. Food serving was a little bit slow, not sure if because there was a big group in front of us. Overall, it is a great restaurant, worth a try if you are in town.

Charming place for a bite to eat before/after checking out all the nearby shops along the street. Service and food were good, good selection of breakfast and lunch options. Good selections for the kids, they really liked the pancakes! Tried my first loco and really enjoyed it too. Only downside was the coffee, ugh 😑There’s a great shop next door though.

The customer service is top notch at Gramma's, we actually met Gramma! Scratch made comfort food and wonderful service made this one of our favorite places to eat in the Hawaii Island! ( Out of at least 10 Mac salads we tried my Mom says this one is the best!)

This was a real Gem of a place in little ol' Honoka'a. This Portuguese (maybe from Brazil) restaurant serves food portions that were just so much. We ordered some kind of rice with chicken and fried eggs on top of it, but we had no idea how it would come out looking like it did in the picture. Very cool, very delicious. The pancakes were enormous, and no shortage on maple syrup. The hashbrowns were very delicious too and crispy. Overall, these three items filled two adults up quite well and the ticket wasn't painful in the pocket either. The only warning to give is that this place is SUPER cozy...as in, it probably can't seat more than 20 people at a time. So, be aware of that. Service and servers were nice and friendly and I appreciated that.
Mahmoud E — Google review
Make sure you visit Grammas! We had the pleasure of meeting her and she checked on the tables and treated us warmly. Asking where we were from and if we or the food needed anything. This restaurant really will treat you same as the locals Mahalo Grammas for the tasty memories and the wonderful company!

Tex Drive-In is a popular pit stop in Honokaa, Hawaii, known for its deep-fried dough balls called malasadas, as well as serving up delicious burgers and Hawaiian food. It's a long-standing establishment that has garnered praise from visitors for its tasty offerings. The restaurant also offers Korean cuisine, adding to its diverse menu. With its convenient location and varied menu options, Tex Drive-In is a must-visit spot for those looking to experience the local flavors of Honokaa.
I haven't tried enough places on the island to make a fair comparison of these malasadas are absolutely amazing. Large, fresh and hot. Super yummy filling choices. Delicious!!!❤️
Steven S — Google review
Fell into the tourist trap of Tex Drive-In. Probably had the driest Kalua Pork of my life, filled with mostly crunchy cabbage. The Mac salad was some of the worst I’ve had. Malasadas are definitely some of the worst you can find. Fries and fish were decent. Giving it a 2-star because of the cool environment, and it’s kind of a must if you’re in the area. If I visit the Big Island again, I probably won’t come back.
David T — Google review
From the reviews I should be happier, but apparently I didn’t see a review on the chicken katsu. This is not home made type of chicken. It’s like a swanson frozen chicken patty , like a chicken nugget. Pressed and nasty. Not worth the price or stomach space. The burgers and fries are the way to go. Buddy had the mahi mahi . Recommend stay away from that as well. The mac is cold macaroni salad, a little too salty for my taste, but dont expect real Texas mac n cheese. The white rice is ok. Id suggest bring in some furikake to make it even better.
Keith B — Google review
Our first local place to try while on vacation in Hawaii is Tex Drive in. Located next to an Ace Hardware and a bank. We tried the Malasadas with guava. Delicious and filing. It was only $1.95. Our meals were kalua pork and cabbage. It was $19 but the flavor was $$$$$$$ amazing. Rice was done well and the macaroni wasn’t my favorite but still pretty well made. My daughter had beef and shrimp meal. Beef was so gooooood. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. I added an island smoothie and was so happy that I did. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Our food wasn’t long behind placing our order so the wait time is short. The atmosphere was local and clean. I totally dug the island vibe and how they handled the decor.
Nolan V — Google review
A trip to the Big Island isn’t complete until you stop at Tex Drive-In for two local must-haves: malasadas and loco mocos! This iconic spot in Honoka‘a has been serving up comfort food with aloha for decades, and it never disappoints. The malasadas are made fresh to order—crispy on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside, and filled with rich, flavorful custards or fruit jams that melt in your mouth. The banana cream was our favorite! And the loco moco? It’s the perfect island-style comfort meal. Tex’s version is hearty and satisfying, with a generous serving of rice topped with a juicy hamburger patty/ teriyaki beef, fried egg, and a savory brown gravy that ties it all together. Whether you’re road-tripping along the Hamakua Coast or just craving a taste of authentic Hawaiian-style cooking, Tex Drive-In is a must-visit. Friendly service, a laid-back atmosphere, and delicious food every time.
Tami P — Google review
We came here after getting breakfast in Waimea just to get Malasadas. Yes we we're already full, but we probably wouldn't be getting back here on this trip. You have to be intentional to get here, as they're not really close to Hilo or Koma- but if you decide to make the drive you won't be disappointed. OMG! We got 6- the box was so heavy for donuts. Which is weird as they are very light to eat. The guava and chocolate filled were among the early favorites. They all looked great though. 5 stars for a hole in the wall away from everyone who does things the right way!
Darren O — Google review
They live up to their reputation for great malasadas. They are huge, and have several delicious fillings. Locals tell us that half of the restrooms are always out of order, and sure enough, 2 of the 4 were closed. They also gave us gave us the wrong filling on 1 of the 3 malasadas we ordered, but we didn't care because they are all delicious.
Dennis S — Google review
If you’re on the Big Island and craving a sweet treat, Tex Drive In in Honokaa is an absolute must-stop! This local favorite is famous for its malasadas — Portuguese-style donuts that are soft, fluffy, and filled with delicious cream, chocolate, or tropical fruit flavors like guava and lilikoi (passion fruit). We tried the custard and guava malasadas fresh out of the fryer — warm, pillowy, and generously filled. The texture is perfect: crispy on the outside, airy on the inside. You can watch them being made right behind the counter, which adds to the fun. The shop also serves a variety of plate lunches, burgers, and local favorites if you’re looking for a full meal. Portions are generous, and the food tastes home-cooked. The vibe is laid-back, just like the rest of the island. There’s plenty of seating both inside and outside, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. It’s a great stop if you’re exploring the Hamakua Coast or heading to or from Waipio Valley.

The memorial plaque pays tribute to Katsu Goto, an immigrant from Japan who was involved in the sugar cane industry before establishing a shop in Honokaa. Tragically, he was lynched by local entrepreneurs for advocating on behalf of the laborers employed in the cane fields. The monument serves as a lasting reminder of this devastating event and honors Goto's memory as a victim of racial violence perpetrated by influential members of the community due to his outspokenness regarding worker rights within the industry.

Today we listened to some live music, (definitely dated me, a throwback from the 1970s) while looking at the booths. Very reasonable prices and friendly people. I tried some smoked ahi which was amazing. Best lemon juice I have ever tasted. The view from this location is worth the visit alone.

Felt lucky to stumble on this amazing market on the one Sunday of the month they hold it. They had live music and lots of vendors. Found some delicious vegan food options at the Thai booth, and enjoyed it under a canopy with stunning views. Such a friendly local vibe!

Great ambiance , the food is locally or on site prepared and tastes fantastic. They have a cover Pic-nik area to enjoy the concert as you eat your food. They also have a non cover seating area to enjoy the concert . Kids will have fun to hang out, but the site does not have an amusement park. The site is dog friendly. Bluecan on site for washroom 🚻 but they have a sink with water for regular handwashing. Parking is a decent size, but go slow as you enter the parking lot. The road condition is terrible. I did felt the fissure from the road even if I was driving a Jeep.

Park
Kalōpā State Recreation Area, situated on the lush side of the Hamakua coastline, is a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts. The park boasts an arboretum with native trees, including rare loulu palms, and offers a gentle loop trail that leads to the ocean through a gulch. The well-marked and maintained trail system makes it perfect for day hikes or camping stays.
It’s a nice secluded area to take a walk in the rainforest. There is a short guided nature trail with pamphlets that have a map and descriptions of different numbered trees and plants along the trail, as well as whether they are native or invasive to Hawaii. There is an indoor gathering space. It’s pretty simple and we spent about an hour here.
Beau G — Google review
The park is three miles off highway 19. We explored the trail and discovered ferns, trees, and more. This would be a great place to camp as there are cabins large and small. Seems like a fantastic place to take the family. There was even a rec center for larger families to enjoy.
Brandy C — Google review
Seeking tranquility? Look no further than Kalōpā State Recreation Area. Starting with the drive up from the highway, you wind through some beautiful trees and ranch land before arriving. The day we were there, we had the entire park to ourselves, which is a rare thing in Hawaii! It's an awesome and we'll preserved park setting, complete with bathrooms and picnic tables. It's a tree lovers paradise! Stroll in the meadows or take a walk along one of several trails, listen to the bird song, breathe the plentiful oxygen, stare at the blue sky.
Rae G — Google review
This review addresses more the camping grounds than the park itself. First, there are 3 tent specific areas for camping, with one reserved for people with reduced mobility. Each of the area is covered and has a concrete floor, making it a little trickier to set up a tent. Second, there are a lot of parking spaces making it easy to acces the car when camping. Third, there're multiple covered picnic areas and even a grill place by the bathroom. The bathroom itself is accessible and also offers a shower and even outlets. Finally, the area is well maintained and clean. Important notes: there's no cellular service and a lot of mosquitos at night.
Catalin G — Google review
My family and I had a great time walking the property. The flowers were gorgeous, as were the trees.

Good place for camping! They have cabins and camp grounds. The place is peaceful. Campgrounds has public restrooms and showers, they also have a gazebo where you can cook, and grill. They also have table and bench that is free to use.

We thoroughly enjoyed our camping stay at Kalopa State Rec area. Warm days made for enjoyable hikes and yard games. Cool nights lent themselves to hibachi campfire cookouts. You will need a reservation to camp but its worth the effort. Its very quiet in the park. If you are not a camper try the well kept cabins. Also make a little time to see the Polynesian Gardens.
