Beaches
Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is a stunning half-mile stretch of golden sand, offering clear waters and excellent swimming conditions during the summer. Lifeguards are on duty to ensure safety, but caution is advised during periods of high surf. The beach is perfect for activities like snorkeling and bodyboarding when the waves are calm, while rougher conditions make it ideal for experienced swimmers and surfers. Additionally, nearby resorts provide access to world-class golf courses with breathtaking ocean views.
One of my favorite beaches anywhere. Fantastic white sand. Good amount of parking, lots of functional showers for rinsing off. Great beach for families, novice boogie boarders, body surfing. I have never snorkeled there, but I did see people snorkeling there. Note: they do charge for parking/access now. There are a lot of families who come here year after year, it's a great place for family memories.

Hapuna Beach is an absolutely stunning coastal destination, renowned for its soft, powdery white sand that stretches for nearly half a mile. The crystal-clear turquoise waters create a vibrant contrast with the lush greenery surrounding the shoreline, making it a picturesque paradise. Gentle waves lap against the shore, inviting both swimmers and snorkelers to enjoy the ocean, while the expansive beach offers the perfect spot for sunbathing, picnicking, or simply strolling along the water’s edge. As the sun begins to set, the sky often transforms into a spectacular canvas of warm oranges and pinks, enhancing the beach’s natural beauty even further.
Juan G — Google review
Nice beach. Has lifeguard, nice restrooms, volleyball court, plenty of grills and family eating areas. A lot of parking, but need to pay. Went on a weekend late morning and there was plenty of places by the water. A little windy the day we went with blo ing sand, and glad we went there.
Greg K — Google review
Great spot for the entire family. Soft sand beach, great facilities (life guards, shower and foot rinse stations, clean bathrooms, picnic areas, etc.). Ocean variable on currents but overall good for swimming. Good size parking lot but can get full at peak hours. For non-Hawaiian residents there is a fee of $10 per car, plus $5 per person. Pay at the mobile station and put on your dash. The pass is good for the entire day and includes access to Beach 69 (Waialea Beach). Additionally, make sure you have Reef Safe sunscreen. Hawaii passed legislation requiring it. You can search for info on details.
Erin K — Google review
Great beach to play in the sun and sand. We went on Tuesday and it was not very crowded. Water was calm in the morning and got a bit choppy in the afternoon. Cost $10. To park and $5. per person.

This is my first visit to this stunning beach. Water was Aqua marin color(gorgeous). The Killer Sunset tonight! Was accompanied with my 70 yr old mother and 18 yr old daughter. Here are some pictures I took, not a professional, but I think I did alright.

Hapuna is one of my favorite beaches to visit, I have been here a few times. I fell in love with Hawaiʻi aka the Big Island. It looks like something that you'd only see in heaven, the most beautiful sunsets and the white sand. Please remember to be kind and respectful to the people and the wildlife - don't get to close to the turtles and don't be a stupid annoying entitled tourist as we are visitors to this beautiful place. Mahalo! ☺️ Until I see you again Hapuna 🌊🐚

Love this beach so much. Sand is great and there's always good waves. Bathrooms are clean but you do gotta pay for parking if non resident so prepare for that....

Hapuna Beach

Beach
Hapuna Beach, located in the northwest section of the island, is a popular destination for families and locals. The beach offers clear turquoise waters, soft white sand, and gentle surf ideal for swimming and body surfing. It features restrooms, picnic areas, and lifeguards for safety. Snorkelers can explore a labyrinth of coral formations at low tide while swimmers can enjoy calm waters perfect for small children. However, caution is advised during winter months when the waves can become rough.
Finest white sand, warm breeze, gentle rolling waves, showers and restrooms, my own piece of Hawai’i paradise for a few hours. And the sunset views will linger long after returning home. Only thing I would improve is to move to Hawai’i to get a local id for free parking.
D J — Google review
Beautiful and calm waters. Bring your snorkeling gear; I had a sea turtle swim about a foot away from me, it was beautiful. The waters are warm and clear and parking was free with Hawaii plates. Not too packed during the week.
Jennifer S — Google review
Arguably the best beach on the Big Island and one of the best and most beautiful on planet Earth. Golden sand, clear water, and rock formations at the edges. Vigilant lifeguards, three bathroom buildings, outdoor showers, and plenty of covered picnic tables. Spectacular sunsets with Maui visible on the horizon.
George H — Google review
Beautiful wide and sandy beach with public access, bathrooms and picnic area. Plenty of parking available. Fee to enter $20 per vehicle, and you can access another beach down the road with the same ticket on the same day. The water is warm and it is sandy all the way so it makes it easy to walk in. There is little shade by the rocks towards the back, so bring and umbrella or something. Really really recommended. Lifeguard not always on duty.
Evelyn P — Google review
This might be the best beach on the Big Island as it has everything you need. It has sand, rocks, waves, fish, snorkeling, boogie boarding, etc. There is ample room to spread out and sit where you like, even in the shade. They have rinse off showers and full bathrooms. Parking is plentiful too. There are a few "wild" chickens that roam around. We saw 3 sea turtles yesterday in the water.
Adrian W — Google review
Nice beach with bathrooms, showers, lifeguards, some tables to eat. There is a small reef nearby so you can snorkel and see some animals. You have to pay to enter and for the parking around 20 for 2 people.
Sara V — Google review
Hāpuna Beach: The Best Sand Beach on the Big Island! Hāpuna Beach is hands-down the most beautiful and convenient sand beach on the Big Island. Soft golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise water. We loved it so much that we drove here almost every day during our trip. Parking was $20 for the day for 2 people in one car (price may vary depending on the number of people), and it’s absolutely worth it for the clean facilities, lifeguards, and easy access to the beach. The waves are usually gentle, perfect for swimming, boogie boarding, or just floating in the water. If you’re looking for a classic Hawaiian beach day without worrying about rocky shorelines, Hāpuna is the spot. 📍 Tip: Arrive early to get the best parking and shaded spots.
Alena M — Google review
$15 day pass for non-residents, but well worth it! The best place to watch the sunset! There was plenty of parking, public restrooms, and outdoor showers. This was the least packed place to enjoy the water. The waves weren’t too crazy, so it was perfect for swimming. We even got lucky enough to see a sea turtle!

Puakō Petroglyph Park is an archaeological preserve spanning hundreds of acres and featuring over 3,000 rock etchings. The trail, mostly unpaved and uneven, leads to a sacred enclosure with reproductions of original petroglyphs. Visitors are advised to be mindful of the natural surroundings, including thorny trees and diverse wildlife. It's recommended to wear sturdy shoes or boots due to the rugged terrain.
Part of the resort is to take care of this historical site. It’s right by the beach but the trail is a shaded walk for the most part into the petroglyph area where there’s carvings on the rocks all over the floor, you can’t walk over it but you can get right next to it. There’s also a bee keeping area off the path, so “bee” careful.
Ahzure U — Google review
These petroglyphs were saved from destruction by lava flows & placed here on a easy walking path. History, art, human creativity, the need for human expression rolled up into a simple walk. We learned there are thousands of petroglypths out in the surrounding lava fields. Saw some wild life on the walk including mongoose & pacific golfen-plover. It is a flat easy walk. Can accomodate wheelchairs or strollers. Plenty of free parking roadside. * Check out the photos
Richard C — Google review
Amazing place to visit. Kind of a sketchy walking path once your past the laid out examples. You would not want to be caught after dark trying to find your way back. Still, it was worth it.
Steve M — Google review
We walked the out and back 1.4 mile trail late in the day. The temperature was warm but not overbearing. The trail is partially shaded. Wear good shoes because it is unpaved and there are lots of loose lava rocks. Large interesting collections of petroglyphs. It is close to a very nice shaded beach park with picnic tables and grass.
Mark M — Google review
Super cool hike, about an hour round trip. Starts off hot and flat, rises pretty quickly into a thick mesquite forest.
Anthony J — Google review
Puako is one of the richest collection of picture writings on rocks ("kaha kii") on the islands. It is so unusual to walk among such precious masterpieces that you usually see in museums behind glass in secured environment. Here they blend in with nature in their place of birth close to magnificent beach and forest. Early Hawaiians did not read or write but they expressed themselves with more than 3,000 petroglyphs at Puako alone. Some meanings of them are a mystery, that are believed to be astronomical navigation maps or encode religious messages.
Andre K — Google review
Super cool experience. Sad that some people defaced some rocks by chiseling their own letters, but the signs are very educational and it's phenomenal to be witness to the history that was there. So glad they preserved the site!
Pris L — Google review
We started the trail from the beach parking lot. It was about a mile and a half round trip through. There are plenty of large thorned plants throughout the walk, I wouldn't recommend slippers. It is somewhat shady but can get very hot, so plan ahead if you have kids. We had a great time, and the actual petroglyphs were very cool and interesting.

Shopping
The Shops at Mauna Lani is an open-air mall featuring retail stores, dining options, and a 4D movie theater. There are also twice-weekly hula shows for entertainment. The grocery store has a wide variety of food in their deli and grab-and-go cases, as well as an attached liquor store. A nearby cafe offers tasty shakes, while Tommy Bahamas is located on the opposite end.
Really nice and it's a long the walk to the pool. Bar, restaurant, shops, etc.... Awesome free art to see along the way.
Kyle J — Google review
Shops close too early. It's 5:40pm and only three or four are open. The show at 7pm on Monday and Thursday is to attract people here, but if the shops are closed, we can't shop.
Lupe S — Google review
Great grocery store with prepared meals to grab and take to the beach!
John S — Google review
The grocery store is very nice, has a great selection of food in the deli and 'grab-n-go' cases. There's an attached liquor store. There's a cafe with good shakes nearby. Tommy Bahamas at the other end. The shops are very expensive though, some of it is pretty high end stuff but most of it you can buy for cheaper at the local farmers markets. There's a fun 4D theater located in one of the shops, each film is about 5-12 minutes so it's a nice short break from the sun and heat. We wondered through Kozy's Tiki Palace, he had lots of cool art work and we didn't get to stay for the show but he does a comedy/ magic show every night, I think it'd be worth checking out.
Michelle P — Google review
The Foodland and Tommy Bahamas are great reasons to visit this center. Theres also a good coffee shop and a nice juice place. Unfortunately, many of the remaining retail spaces here are vacant and the rest are almost variably selling indistinguishable, ubiquitous island wear. Come for the food but don't expect much else.
Molly W — Google review
I took the shuttle bus to The Shops at Mauna Lani. Had a Pog smoothie and a Maui surprise muffin both pretty good at Kimobean. The prices were reasonable. I also went food shopping at Foodland Farm. They have a pretty nice selection on wine. It's a small strip mall but conveniently located.
Sylvia C — Google review
Some great shops available here. I visited foodland and kimobean coffee repeatedly, and did so on bikes from the nearby Mauna Lani Bay Resort. Poke bowls at foodland are fantastic and far more affordable than what's available at the resort. Kimobeancoffee has delicious muffins and scones. Buy local.

49 Black Sand Beach, located on the Kohala Coast, is a unique destination due to its status as the only black sand beach in the area. Accessible through a gated private community off of Honokaope Pl, this public beach offers uncrowded and serene surroundings. The volcanic bay near Mauna Lani Resort features a small crescent of black sand surrounded by lava rock cliffs at Honokaope Bay.
A peaceful, private black sand beach to relax and swim for a couple of hours or half a day. Recommend bringing parasol (as it gets super hot), chairs and drinks to hydrate yourself 🏝
Esther H — Google review
Small but beautiful black/gray sand beach in private area with limited parking. Very few places with shade, which is why we moved to another beach. The partially rocky constellation seems to be great for snorchling and it's not windy, so an umbrella will hold.
Janina — Google review
We stumbled upon 49 Black Sand Beach by total surprise — and what a hidden gem! It’s located inside a gated community near Wailea on the Big Island, and they give out daily parking passes based on the limited number of spaces, which keeps the beach peaceful and uncrowded. We loved how private and serene it felt. We walked along the black sand shoreline, dipped our feet in the clear water, explored the lava rocks, and admired the gorgeous homes perched up on the cliffs. The lady at the gate was so kind and helpful, and the entire experience was just perfect. If you’re looking for a quiet, scenic black sand beach on the Big Island, this spot is absolutely worth visiting.
Tricia J — Google review
Small beach, but very few people (probably because it's rather difficult to get to). The black sand is beautiful and there's even a nice shaded area by the cliff side. If you're on this side of the island and are looking for a peaceful black sand beach I would highly recommend this one.
Kyle M — Google review
Great quiet beach, looks more like salt and pepper sand to me. Snorkeling was awesome, we saw so many varieties of fish and it was clear. Lots of rock formations to swim around but protected area so you don’t feel the movement of the ocean. They have shower to rinse and bathrooms.
Golden G — Google review
Beautiful beach, bring your snorkel gear too!
Cherisse P — Google review
This is a gated beach and both times we tried the parking was full 4th time in the way to airport we finally got it!! It’s totally worth the attempts, they have only ~17 parking spots. it’s very beautiful. Looks like a steep deep beach today meant for those very comfortable in the ocean water. The sand gets very hot, wearing the water shoes can be useful. They close before sunset. It was a very windy day and there was choppy water warning everywhere.
Sandhya P — Google review
Great place for snorkeling. Although the parking is limited, if you get there early, you can get a spot. The reef at the beach has a huge variety of coral and fish, and there are a family of dolphins who always seem to be out in the cove and will interact with you if you swim near them. There are restrooms on site. As others have noted, the black sand gets really hot so wear your beach shoes. note: while this is a great beach for snorkeling, it is not great for little kids to swim in since the drop off is immediate once you are in the water

Naupaka Beach Grill is a poolside eatery at the Westin, offering an array of creative bar bites, poke bowls, sandwiches, craft beers, and cocktails. Visitors have praised the delicious food, relaxed atmosphere, stunning views, and excellent service. While some found the Caesar salad overdressed and the poke bowl different from traditional ones, others appreciated the fresh and tasty menu options. The grill also offers daily drink specials for $10.
With the mixed reviews, I was a little apprehensive about eating here. I shouldn’t have been. Yes, it is a little pricy and it did take a couple of minutes for them to seat us, but it was well worth it. We were not staying at this property, and we wanted to see it anyway. Our server was gracious and gave us some very good recommendations. The view was amazing (the photo that includes the pool was from our seat; the beach photos were from about 20 feet away, on the other side of the pool deck). The coconut shrimp was a great start, and plenty for both of us. The barbecue ribs were so tender that the meat fell off the bone, and there was no need to hold the ribs with my fingers (or get BBQ sauce on them!). For dessert, the Tartufo was very good (and I had no idea what a Tartufo was before this). All in all, a great experience. We will definitely be back the next time we are on the Big Island.
James N — Google review
We got there and immediately got seated the strawberry daiquiri was really good! I got the coconut shrimp for the appetizer it that was super good! Than I got the famous spicy fries and those were super good! The only bad part is that it smelled like chlorine being the fact that it's right by a pool but overall it's a good place to have dinner!
J S — Google review
This is a resort, so your expectations should align accordingly. We ordered poolside from the adult pool. While the drinks on the menu are definitely overpriced, the convenience makes it worth it. The margarita of the day is a must-try—and it’s $5 off from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.! 🍹 We enjoyed mango one day and lilikoi (passion fruit) the next. The Mai Tai is a classic Hawaiian choice 🌺, though the drinks could be a bit stronger. There are some great light bites to enjoy poolside. We especially loved the hummus plate. 🥕🫓 The views can't be beat! The service was kind and prompt, making the experience even more enjoyable.
Tara K — Google review
Despite the nice presentation, the food here doesn’t live up to the hype or the price. Portions are small, flavours are lacking, and the dishes leave you feeling unsatisfied. While there are some vegetarian and vegan options, they’re quite bland and not at all filling. On the upside, the service was friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is pleasant. Unfortunately, that’s not enough to justify the steep cost.
Kyle P — Google review
Poolside restaurant at the Westin. The food is hit or miss, and they got some small things wrong on our orders (regular fries vs. sweet potato). I would not recommend this place unless you are already staying at the hotel
Joe — Google review
Are bartender was Bruce very entertaining made great drinks. Add a Mai Tai a rum punch there are sweet potato chips are the bomb diggity the food was very delicious but I forgot to post pictures because I was so excited when it came out had the Pokey stack it was phenomenal highly recommend
Sumrhot — Google review
The food is bland, literally no flavor (there is not even any salt or pepper on the potato mac) and severely overpriced. This is what you get when you order the veggie and pita hummus plate that costs $14. We spent $60 for two people on a lunch that did not even satisfy our hunger. Do not spend your money here.
Alexis M — Google review
My wife and I stayed at the Westin Hapuna Resort and went to this restaurant twice. The location is excellent, but the staff were extremely unfriendly. They never came by once during our meal, and even after we finished, no one came, so I had to go to the front desk to ask for the check. Even then, it took another 10 minutes before it finally arrived.

BINCHOTAN BAR & GRILL is a popular spot known for its excellent service and delicious food. Visitors have raved about the attentive staff who catered to their needs, ensuring a memorable dining experience. The menu offers a wide variety of options, including authentic Japanese dishes and delectable desserts. Guests have particularly enjoyed the smoky flavor infused into the dishes from the Japanese coals used in cooking.
We had a wonderful dinner. Jimmy was excellent and helped us with a food sensitivity and finding great options on the menu. Our waters and our drinks were always full. A really great dinner out on the patio on a beautiful night. We had the Volcano roll and a grilled seafood dinner for 1 to share. I asked for an inspired Manhattan cocktail with Japanese whiskey and it did not disappoint.
Jonathon D — Google review
The wait staff were great, the food not so much. We were sick all night after eating here. We all had a bit of eachother dishes. No one finished their meal. Gotta be blunt since this place is $$$. We could have grilled and made better Udon ourselves and have had much better sushi rolls. Even if we hadn’t gotten food poisoning, this place is off our list for good. Looks good enough to eat but so disappointed to have gotten ill from eating it.
Jennifer M — Google review
TLDR good for nice dinner in a pinch but there are other better options on this side of the island. Takoyaki were OK, lacked flavor a bit and not as much octopus in them. Volcano Roll delicious. Bincho Roll also very good, and would order again but not the best Waygu I had in the area (CanoeHouse Waygu Tataki was 2x better). Sashimi Set high quality fish. Grilled Kanpachi SO good, I went back and ordered it again. The fish itself is so soft and moist. The mushrooms add incredible flavor and texture. A little pricey (~$60) for the portion but not unheard of for the area/hotel. Atmosphere was just weird....super empty. No one inside either time we went around 7/8pm. Outside was quiet and we ended up being one of the only people out there.
Ella D — Google review
Ordered some sushi rolls To go to enjoy in my hotel room and pretty disappointed with the smoked kanpachi roll. The menu did not say it had cucumbers in it nor that it was deep fried. When I called to confirm the staff sounded confused and then all they had to offer was “I’m sorry.” I expect better customer service for such a high end place, at least offer to make me a different roll. If I had known it was deep fried I would not have ordered it.
Wendy W — Google review
Beautiful scenery great place to have dinner if you’re staying at the Fairmont orchid or not. Our server was Jacob and he was very friendly and nice and knew a lot about the menu. We had the Collar fish, curry, Volcano sushi, Bao Buns, and the best matcha lava cake! Easily the best dessert I’ve had in years. Looking forward to dining with Jacob and Binchotan again in the near future.
Penelope K — Google review
We had dinner here one night during our stay on the Big Island. Food was pretty good; well seasoned and solid portions. The service was exceptional. Jacob, our server, went out of his way to accommodate dietary restrictions and was an engaged, enthusiastic person who made the dining experience that much more special. Would recommend!
Asad A — Google review
Visited on our first night. Food was delicious. We the salt and pepper lobster, crispy tuna rice, udon, and the $95 grill experience Was a delightful experience and service was great! Would recommend to try it, but felt like it lacked anything that made it memorable for me (personally). Nevertheless, still a great place
Jason V — Google review
I’m not going to lie, I’m very perplexed by the relatively mediocre rating of the restaurant. I always keep an open mind and I’m glad I did. My husband and I dined there this evening to celebrate our honeymoon and The food was spectacular. We ordered the Tuna Crispy Rice, chicken karaage, pork gyoza, crab and corn croquettes, hot rock wagyu beef and several delicious cocktails. The food was extremely well executed and was delicious beyond our expectations. Accompanying sauces really elevated the plates of food. Our server was great- friendly and informative. It took a little time for him to get to our table but he checked in and apologized for the wait. It’s clear they are short staffed and servers are doing the best they can to manage it. Once he got our food and drink orders in he was on his game and made sure we were well taken care of. The initial service was a bit slow, but everything else made up for it. Cocktails were delicious. The bar menu has an amazing chart of their drinks as far as light vs heavy/boozy, fruity vs sour and where each cocktail falls on that “roadmap”. This place is much better than the 3.6 I’m seeing at the time of my review. Be patient and check it out. You won’t be disappointed. I hope to go back before we move islands. PS: their breakfast buffet is amazing. You can find anything you want.

Amazing experience! They have a separate vegan menu with well planned out options. We were celebrating our anniversary and our server Tremaine even ensured the kitchen made us a vegan option for our complimentary desert. 10/10 would return and recommend to everyone. Time your visit so you can watch the sunset from your table.

First off, the atmosphere is 2nd to none. The beauty of the sunset over the ocean while drinking a citrus cocktail was surreal. The service was fantastic. Everyone was attentive and incredibly kind. We ordered the dry aged Ribeye (medium rare), and the lobster rice. The ribeye was char crusted which made it crunchy on the outside. I feel that this took away from the dry aging. Dry aged meat usually melts in your mouth. This was overcooked and kind of tasted burnt on the outside. The mashed potatoes that came with it were cold. The lobster fried rice tasted like the lobster mixed with white fish out of a bag. The sweet potatoe rolls and butter were fantastic! That was one of the most amazing parts of the meal! We spent around $200 and felt that the food was a little under whelming. However, we would come back for the atmosphere and to try something different.

I spent my birthday night at this amazing place, and I loved it right from the moment we handed our car over to the valet. We were greeted by a stunning view of the property and the house. The hostess welcomed us and gave us a perfect overview of the menu. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere, and our food arrived in a timely manner. Everything I tried was phenomenal. I can honestly say this is the best food I’ve ever had, and I’ve been to many places. This experience truly stands out, and I look forward to coming back for more.

We came here for our anniversary dinner and loved the experience, especially getting to watch a beautiful sunset while dining. The service was excellent, and we really enjoyed the fries they were super tasty. The watermelon poke bowl was refreshing and a nice surprise. Dessert was just okay, and for the main course we had to request a custom vegetable fried rice since the vegetarian entrée options were limited. Overall, a memorable evening with great service and a stunning view, though we’d love to see more vegetarian choices on the menu.

We always save a night for this place. Well worth the drive from Kailua-Kona. Food is special occasion worthy. Lovely tables just feet from the beach, set on a green meadow. The service is attentive. My ribeye was scrumptious. Hubby ate all his mahi and then helped with my 12 oz steak. Mushrooms and mashed potatoes round out the plate. The scallops appetizer was so yummy! The tiny mushrooms and asparagus and sauce complemented the seared delicious circles. Tiramisu and crème were our chosen desserts. I missed taking a photo of the mains, sorry! There was a bit of kerfluffle because it rained and we had to move.

I made a reservation two weeks in advance for our wedding anniversary and specifically requested a front-row table. At the time, many seats were still available, but the restaurant ignored my request and seated us in the middle. Of course, that really affected the mood of the evening. Do not recommend Kona Prawns.

Went here a bunch at our stay on the resort and everytime it was great. Nachos, tacos, sandwiches, beer - all exactly what you want in a beachside bar. Staff was super friendly and attentive.

This was the perfect experience! We came for their private dinning experience on the beach and let me tell you it was absolutely worth it! The food was amazing, the services was fantastic, and the atmosphere was unbelievable! The ube bread was to die for as well as the orchid cosmo but you better save room for dessert as the Kona coffee tiramisu really was the cherry on top!!!

HāLani is a hidden gem nestled within a stunning resort, where the ambiance and service truly shine. Guests rave about the exceptional staff who go above and beyond to make everyone feel special, even if they aren't staying at the resort. While some dishes like the mixed green salad and Brussels sprouts received mixed reviews, highlights include the delectable lobster mac and cheese that left diners wanting more. The beach surrounding HāLani is breathtaking, inviting visitors to explore its beauty while enjoying their meals.
Wow!! If you're looking for gorgeous atmosphere, beautiful views, great service, and delicious food... make you3 reservation now! My husband and I made a 6 PM dinner reservation to celebrate our anniversary on a Tuesday - restaurant about halfway full. Service from all staff and our waiter was very friendly and attentive. -Seared Halloumi with Pistachio Pesto & Arrabbiata -Calabrese Pizza made with their in-house Balloon Bread dough -Cacio e Pepe -Bottle of white wine (couldn't recall the name, but it was light, refreshing, and hit the spot) Food was SO delicious! We ended up ordering a second pizza because it was so good! Would highly recommend for a nice meal and for any special occasion or just because!

This is a food review only. The atmosphere is great. Ate here for dinner on my third and last night. The bread was soooo delectable and chewy. 🤤 I ordered the wagyu steak and it was way too chewy, rather than melt in your mouth, and there wasn’t a lot of flavor. It would’ve been better with some marinade. I would skip it if you’re looking for a good steak.
Nicky — Google review
The atmosphere and views are spectacular, especially around sunset time! The service was very friendly and all the food was delicious. Definitely recommend getting the trio of dips and a couple servings of the ballon bread to share! I had the skirt steaks with bravas, both of which were season nicely and tasted wonderful.
Cristofer V — Google review
Spectacular and beautiful views with a stunning atmosphere however the service and food was completely lacking for this upscale resort. Our group of 7 were seated right away but were then left sitting for nearly 15 minutes before being acknowledged, our server admitted that they were ready for the weekend and they seemed overworked. The signature cocktails were nothing special especially for the price (you can get much better drinks at the Rum Shack). We ordered 2 breads but only received 1 and had to ask twice for the second. I ordered the Ahi steak and was delivered not a steak but 7 small slices of Ahi on top of Orzo. A family member asked for a spicy sauce and had to wait 30 minutes before it arrived. Needless to say this restaurant was an extreme disappointment for service and food.

Beautiful place with gorgeous views. There was a cat wondering around the restaurant and I thought that was so sweet. The appetizer portions were a bit small for the price but everything tasted great. Go around sunset.

Besides the food being delicious, I actually had fun lol. Our server, Cody, was the absolute best. He was so sweet and was talking to us and took a photo for us and just being so nice. We went our first night there, we got 2 rounds of drinks, the bread balloon, a Kekela greens salad, Harissa Chicken kebabs, and a sweet toffee cake w/ macadamia nuts. Everything was so good! My friend got this drink called the Poni Punch and I was obsessed. Our server, Cody, had given us some nice recommendations on places to go visit and he told us we should come back tomorrow night and get some more drinks. Of course, we went back haha. That second night, we sat down in the section Cody was serving and he remembered the drink I liked (Poni Punch) and let me know that it would be on the house! I was so happy hahaha. We also got breakfast our last day there and honestly, the Ube pancakes were the best thing I've ever eaten. AMAZING!! Needless to say, we loved the experience. We felt so welcome and had so much fun on top of the food being great.

Beautiful location and ambiance. Great food and presentation. Service was great too. Great place for a special dinner

The best part about this place is the service and the atmosphere, the restaurant is located inside the resort, the service is top notch, they made you feel special even thought I didn’t stay there. The food is okay, ordered the mix green salad (average), prawns on the side (average) Brussels sprouts (below average), lobster Mac and cheese (very good). The beach is amazing, they let us walk around the resort it is so beautiful, would definitely come back and stay here next time.

For day 2, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with Kalahuipua'a Historic Park, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Puako General Store. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Nature & Parks
Kalahuipua'a Historic Park is a preserved area within the Mauna Lani resort in Waikoloa, featuring ancient ocean-fed fish ponds, petroglyphs, and lava tubes. The four-acre fishponds were once abundant with fish for royal consumption. Visitors can take a 1.5-mile stroll through the lava field and winding paths around freshwater ponds teeming with jumping fish. It's recommended to explore the park respectfully and be mindful of its local significance.
Long, hot walk on an asphalt path through the collapsed lava tubes takes you to the "tickle pool" where cute little fish suck off your dead skin. Try hard to not laugh! Nice refreshing cold water to sit in. Then you can continue to the eel pool and beach.

Loved the trail to the old fishing ponds. The trails lead the beach 🌴.
A W — Google review
Very pretty! Initially, the trail was hot, but interesting with lava tubes and info boards. But it ended in a beautiful beach with fish ponds. Worth the walk.
Bob C — Google review
This historical park is in the middle of the beautiful Mauna Lani resort complex which is open to the public. There is free parking at the trail head along with restrooms and picnic tables. A smoothly paved trail winds through the lava past numerous archeological sites of interest. Interpretive signs explain the fascinating history. You can continue walking to explore the stunning emerald green fish ponds and islands.

4/28/2025 (Mon) There’s a cave in Kalāhuipua‘a Historic Park that’s said to be a spiritual power spot. At a certain time of day, when the sun is directly overhead, light shines through a hole in the rock ceiling and bathes the person standing below in a glow — creating the appearance of an aura. The ceiling isn’t as low as I expected, and it’s easy to walk to the back, but it’s quite dark inside, and the ground is uneven with large stones, so you have to step carefully. It was cloudy on the day I visited, so I didn’t get to see the aura effect, but the cave still felt mysterious and beautiful.✨️
Yulily — Google review
The views in this park are so stunning. Get yourself ready for a dip in a nice calm beach. No waves here, the beach is located behind a hill and it’s very calm and super chill. There’s grass at the beach too and overall just above and beyond experience.
Lena M — Google review
This place is a little gem! Gorgeous views at all parts of the journey. If you like lava fields and lava tubes this is a place for you. Not into those but would rather enjoy time close to water. With the ocean and fish ponds this place doesn't let you down. A great place to spend the afternoon. Beach access is also available for those who want to spend time at the ocean. Highly recommend visiting this place if you are on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Shannon E — Google review
This historic park presents a picture of the ancient Hawaiian living place. The lava rocks surrounded the cave where they lived, and the ocean is not far from the cave. When you enter the small cave, you could feel and imagine how they lived here before. If you travel with the kids, they could learn a totally different life style of them compared to modern life. I would recommend any family travelers. The rest room is at the parking lots.

Kalahuipua'a Fishponds

Nature preserve
Kalahuipua'a Fishponds are a group of ancient fishponds located at the Mauna Lani Resort on the Kohala Coast of Big Island. Out of the seven historic fishponds, Kalahuipua'a is the largest, covering 4.6 acres and supporting fish to this day. The ponds are surrounded by palm trees, creating a serene and beautiful atmosphere that reflects Hawaii's natural beauty.
These fish ponds were beautiful. They had all kinds of fish that entertained me and my family. We saw beautiful pufferfish, I'm pretty sure some trigger fishes, and some fish that could jump out the water! The water is nice and clear for looking into the ponds too so seeing the fish isn't too hard
Ludvig E — Google review
Fish ponds are great., getting there was not so easy. The Google map direction will lead you to a gate with no public access. Instead you need to enter via the historic park if you drive. We were on foot via the ancient foot trail. We need to figure it out via satellite image ourselves. Besides the first blocked gate, the Google map directed us to another path that is for registered golfers only…

An amazing example of how humans have impacted their surroundings. In this case it has led to 7 serene fishponds with a fairly easy hike around equally awe inspiring nature. Dotted around this area are the reminders of a bygone era something that rightfully caused me a great deal of contemplation.

This ancient fishponds blow my mind! So beautiful and amazing one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen. Roaming around them you get lost in such beauty and awe. Well maintained and up-kept. Do yourself a favor and stroll thru here. The history and story of the area is fascinating.

I would define this fish ponds as the palm tree heaven. The ponds are surrounded by a lot of the palm trees, and you definitely can tell that "I am in the Hawaii." Beautiful and calm place! Besides, you could meet very special fishes from this ponds. When you put your feet in the ponds, the fish will come and touch your feet. It's like a hidden jem in this ponds!

Mauna Lani Sea Adventures offers an unforgettable experience aboard the Winona, a 50-foot Polynesian style sailing catamaran. The vessel is U.S.C.G. Certified and can accommodate up to 49 passengers, making it suitable for both large groups and intimate gatherings. With a 3/4 covered cabin area, guests can enjoy protection from the sun and wind while still taking in the beautiful views through large viewing windows.
We had a great time snorkeling with Chris and his crew on the catamaran. Towels, snorkel gear, flotation devices, snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) are provided. Snorkeling in this area is pretty cool, and we got to see dolphins from the boat. Also had an up close encounter with an octopus too. If you get seasick easily this trip should be fairly manageable for you as this side of the island has calm water. Would highly recommend!
Sara B — Google review
The great debate of taking off a star for this not being an actual sail was a tough decision, but with such a fantastic crew and an all around incredible experience, I'll keep it. The Winona does have a sail, but it's never raised during this tour. While that is somewhat disappointing, the crew was very attentive and provided outstanding service of unlimited beverages (my son had 10 non-alcoholic drinks) and unlimited chips or nuts. A very relaxing tour along the shoreline with stunning views of the crashing surf and surrounding mountains. We saw a few humpback whales and flying fish during the sunset tour. Highly recommended and hope this tour keeps going elsewhere after January 31st. Many repeat customers who come year after year and even locals show how highly appreciated this experience is.

Real short boat ride to dive spot with amazing diving where a manta ray was getting cleaned and Dive Master Steve found octopus at both our dive spots. 2 divers in our group have used this business multiple times and we will be going back to Mauna Lani Sea Adventures again too.

This devastatingly beautiful beach is made of chunky white coral. While a poor choice for swimming, it is very popular for sunbathing and picnics. There are many tables in the shade with functional charcoal grills. A modern bathroom with an outdoor shower is close by. Plenty of free parking. I even saw a couple of fishing poles propped up. The water is many impossibly vibrant shades of turquoise!

One of my favorite coastal hiking trails to go hiking. You feel so remote. I start here at the beach park where the black lava rock and bleached Coral give an otherworldly scene. Follow the trail north as long as you desire you will find secluded places to watch sunset and tide pools. Keep hiking and you’ll discover one of the most amazing coast lines you’ll ever see. It makes you really feel out in the middle of the pacific. I’ve included pics from two different times, 2023 and 2015

We spent over $40 on two sandwiches, two cookies and 1 bag of chips. No drinks. The beef on the roast beef sandwich was so tough we couldn’t chew it and it was tasteless. The chicken wrap was mushy. Hale Kai Restaurant is a casual poolside spot at the Fairmont Orchid hotel, offering Hawaiian favorites with ocean views. The restaurant doesn't require reservations, making it convenient for travelers. Guests appreciate the swift service and delicious meals, such as the Ono fish and fish tacos. While the location provides a nice ocean view, it may not be ideal for watching sunsets. Diners enjoyed dishes like fresh catch tacos and found the service to be excellent.
This is a great bar with a casual dining experience. One of the best scenic sunset viewpoints in the area. It is located poolside next to Brown’s in the Fairmont Orchid they don’t take reservations but you simply put your name on the waitlist and they will text you when your table is ready. I try not to eat at hotel restaurants as I love to venture out, but we were starving! Plus, the Ironman triathlon was taking place so the roads were a mess and I didn't want to deal with it, so here we were. ATMOSPHERE: They're located poolside, oceanfront, and 100% outdoors. A towering, thatched-roof bar that would look right at home in the Bahamas sits up front. Regular table seating spills out onto a sand floor, something I'm not fond of. There were a few umbrellas for shade. Naturally there were a few flies & gnats pestering us but that's a given being that you're outdoors. FOOD: Caesar Salad The dressing was really good; creamy and on the savory side. Burger This was really good and worth the price. The patty was thick and juicy with a nice sear, and cooked perfectly to my medium liking. The two strips of bacon had a nice crunch. The natural cut fries were thick and salted with chunky sea salt crystals which gave it a great flavor and was visually appealing. Two yums up! SERVICE: We were seated immediately as the place was empty on this Saturday afternoon around 3pm. Our server was friendly & professional, and checked on us often. OVERALL: A bit pricey, great food, views, and service.

I loved eating at this spot during my stay at the Fairmont Orchid. There’s no requirement for a reservation, which I appreciated since I was jet lagged and was not certain about a dinner time for myself early in the trip. It has a great view of the ocean. The food came out fast and each meal was delicious! Jackie was my server each night, and he was awesome. The service was swift, fun, and he had great recommendations. Had Ono fish the first night and fish tacos the second night. Food was fresh and very tasty. Definitely recommend going here!

Celiac safe! Our servers, Iryne and Cherrish-Anne, were phenomenal, very knowledgeable, and very helpful in accommodating a safe meal for my wife to eat. The Thai Green Salad was her favorite and the Lobster Fried Rice was something we both loved. They actually made it gluten free for her! Our favorite spot at the resort for the ocean views and great cocktails! Thank you for the pleasant dining experience!

We stayed at this hotel multiple times and we always go to this place for our first meal coming to Big Island. It could be our bad luck, the young man who took us in wasn't friendly at all. All I did was asked for a shaded area and I asked nicely. He looked very grumpy. My husband said thanks man after he took us to our table. I said perfect. The guy just walked away without acknowledging us. What's up with that?! Thanks goodness our server was very nice. The food was ok. Their salad was not as good as the ones I tried 7 years ago and I'm still hoping they improve. Checkin on Wednesday 4/23, around 1 PM.

By day, guests can enjoy sunlit vistas, while at night, the ambiance is transformed by a mesmerizing fire pit and tiki torch glow against the ocean backdrop. The menu features fresh farm-to-table meals such as Shokupan Pull Apart Breadbuttered and Grilled Whole Keahole Lobster.
Incredible food and wonderful experience for a family dinner of seven adults. We were sat outdoors on the patio for a 715p reservation made via OpenTable two weeks earlier. Reservation was confirmed via text 24hrs in advance. On arrival we were seated pretty much immediately with the table already ready and waiting. My family enjoyed drinks, appetizers, main course, and desserts. Our waiter was very helpful and friendly. There was no feeling of being rushed or hurried in our decisions or dining. While we were too late in the evening to enjoy sunset, dining was still very enjoyable in the night air and there was more than enough light provided with lamps. The snap peas and sashimi appetizers were particular standouts that everyone enjoyed. I would highly recommend CanoeHouse for anyone looking for a very nice, and memorable dining experience on their trip.

The CanoeHouse was an absolutely amazing experience. We had the pleasure of being served by Ian, whose warmth and hospitality truly made our evening unforgettable. He was welcoming, attentive, and added such a personal touch to our dinner. The food was exceptional!! Hands down the best we had on our entire trip. Every dish was beautifully presented, flavorful, and the quality was unmatched. And the view at sunset? Simply breathtaking. It made the whole evening feel absolutely magical. This is now our go to dining spot whenever we're on the Big Island. Don’t hesitate. Make a reservation! Thank you for such a beautiful and memorable night, Ian. We will absolutely be back!

Stopped by for my birthday dinner with the Hubs and loved the setting and atmosphere. Refined, lively, with a touch of relaxed Hawaiian vibe it was the perfect place to be seated outside on the terrace with dimmed lights. Although I did find it slightly too dark but it was still romantic and a lovely table. Service was professional and Engaging. Felt very celebrated but also gave us space to have a nice dinner. As far as food goes, the daikon salad is a must fresh and crisp just perfect to open up the palate. Star of the evening was the grilled lobster. Rich in flavor covered in spiced coconut sauce, delicious. We found the steak a bit underwhelming nothing special. All in all, great spot to celebrate something nice or just come for a evening out.

Without any doubt this was our best restaurant experience on the Big Island. The staff were friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is beautiful with tables set to overlook a lawn and lounge areas within steps of the ocean. Our waiter, Michael, was knowledgeable and took great care to ensure our evening was enjoyable. The food and drink were excellent, American fare with a Japanese twist. The swordfish and amberjack were seasoned and cooked to perfection. My only regret is that we did not discover this place until the end of our trip to Hawaii. Highly recommended.

DEFINITELY do not miss the Canoe House!!! It was our favorite dinner on the island. The view is spectacular, sitting in the open air, watching the sunset, it's absolutely gorgeous!! Our server, Billy, was friendly and provided excellent service. The GRILLED WHOLE KEAHOLE LOBSTER was thee BEST lobster I've ever tasted. It was tender beyond belief, plentiful and worth the $95 price tag. It was easily accessible in its shell, moist, cooked to perfection and the chef accommodated a different delicious coconut curry type sauce given I have allergies to Gluten and Dairy and didn't resonate to the spicy accompaniment. The carrots were ordinary and a bit too hard, we don't recommend them. The roasted chicken was tender, a mix of dark/white meat served on the bone. It was tasteful, however, not worth the price tag. The mango sorbet was enjoyable and the Canoe House sundae was unique and absolutely delicious!! Constructive feedback would be to create additional options for individuals like my spouse who are non fish/seafood or beef eaters. Given, the Lobster and the ambience was out of this world and the service exemplary, we will definitely return on our next visit!!

The best meal we had on the island so far. The food is mid but the atmosphere and view are fantastic. The garlic fried rice came highly recommended, but it was a bit too salty for us this time. The grilled lamp chops and oysters are pretty good.

Absolutely fantastic experience! Every dish was original and bursting with flavour, we genuinely wanted more of everything. The service was top-notch, with friendly and polite staff who made us feel very welcome. I honestly have nothing negative to say about this place. We had a wonderful evening and will definitely be coming back!

This place is one of my top 3 restaurants on the island. The view is incredible. Also loved the atmosphere. Food and service were amazing! Highly recommend. They don’t take walk-ins so make sure you make reservations!

The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is a sophisticated beachfront property located on the stunning Hapuna Beach. It offers a range of amenities including an 18-hole golf course, three restaurants, and a spa. The resort provides a family-friendly atmosphere and all rooms feature private lanais with ocean views. Guests can enjoy the soft white sands of Hapuna Beach and relax at the hotel pool with cabanas and lounge chairs.
Good sized, clean room. Service everywhere has been exemplary and every staff member has made me feel so welcomed! Beach is stunning - there are towels available and copious beach chairs with umbrellas. Could also rent snorkeling gear etc which I thought was nice. The pools are sparkling and clean. The poolside restaurant/bar was also great - several good drink options to enjoy while taking in the beautiful beach views. Would definitely hope to return again!

Loved this resort. Quiet and peaceful. Sometimes it felt like we were the only people there. Pool is beautiful, grounds are very well maintained, and the staff is exceptional. The beach is gorgeous and very quiet. We stayed at 3 hotels throughout our stay in Hawaii, and they were the only ones to give us complimentary champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for our honeymoon. My one and only thing I wish they had was more food options. Given its location, it would be awesome if they had another restaurant on property. But that is minor. We would absolutely stay here again, and the big island has so much to offer! Don’t underestimate it!

My partner and I recently stayed at The Westin Hāpuna Beach on Big Island, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, the service was excellent. We booked an ocean-view room, and the turquoise color of the sea was absolutely stunning. The room was spacious, the bed and pillows were extremely comfortable, and the bathroom was very well equipped. We initially had a small issue with the hot water pressure, but it was quickly fixed by the staff. The beach was spotless, and the service throughout the property was outstanding. They provide snorkeling gear, and there are plenty of beautiful fish near the rocks on the right side of the beach — we even got to see a gorgeous green sea turtle! We had dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Meridia, and both the food and drinks were exceptional. Our rate included the breakfast buffet, which was varied and delicious. We would definitely stay here again!

We just checked out from our stay here and are sad to go because we had such an amazing stay. The resort is beautiful and the amenities are nice as well. Our room was spacious and while it was listed as a partial ocean view, I thought it was spectacular. We also encountered numerous staff who were so kind and made our stay. Jhene at check in was so kind and sweet and made us feel so welcome and at home. At Ikena every morning for breakfast, Marimar, Krystal, Ginger, and Maddie were a joy to see everyday and always had friendly and smiling faces. Charlie at the omlette station also was so nice to see every morning. The free guest laundry was a nice touch as well. All in all we would stay here again in a heartbeat next time we are on the big island.

Great location on Hapuna Beach! Very attentive staff. Reasonable room rates for the amazing views and access to the beach. Food here was the weak point here. They talk a great game but short on delivery for the high prices. Still a great value if you dont spend the entire time eating here.

The highlight stay of our 2-week trip to Hawaii. We got an amazing price, and in Sept the weather was beautiful every day. Meridia is a great restaurant, as is Engawa. The staff are attentive and plentiful, you never have to want for anything from when you arrive until you leave. The western coast of the big island has a lot of things to do and see, and you can take a few days to go inland to check out other things. We thought deeply and cant really fault much about the hotel besides small nits. We will almost certainly come back at some point, and we will recommend this hotel to others!

This resort is not a 4 star resort, and the reason's may not be what you think. The venue is great. The beach is great. They do not know their customer base however. Restaurants close at 9, and room service is done at 10pm. On a Friday night, it's dead at 7pm. And they don't care that people are on vacation, to sleep late and stay up late. If you head out on a day trip, you better hit the grocery store because even the towns close by are shut down by 9pm. The food is truly bad, and 3x the price of what we pay in LA or NY. Maybe it's a big island thing, but if you want to sit on the beach and get served, or stay up late and sit at a bar..this isn't the place. It kinda ruins how beautiful it all is because the food experience is so bad.

This hotel is in the perfect spot, with the beach access and the nice pools you do not even want to leave to hotel. The vibe is very laid back. We also enjoyed the restaurants on the property as well. Great experience and hope I get to come back again!
