Charlemont offers easy access to outdoor adventures in the northern Berkshires, especially along the Deerfield River, which is popular for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and fishing. Berkshire East Mountain Resort provides skiing and snowboarding in winter, plus mountain biking, ziplining, and a mountain coaster in warmer months. The town sits on the historic Mohawk Trail, a scenic byway known for winding mountain roads and fall foliage views. Its small-town setting and surrounding forests make it a good base for hiking, camping, and exploring nearby state parks and reservations.
With favorites like Mohawk Trail State Forest, The Boathouse Galley, and Thunder Mountain Bike Park, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like The Boathouse Galley so you can get the best taste of Charlemont while you’re here. Berkshire East Mountain Resort is a popular destination in Charlemont, offering a wide range of thrilling activities year-round. The resort features the longest zip line in North America and boasts the Warfield Trails, which cover 540 acres and provide over 700 vertical feet of relief for mountain biking enthusiasts. Visitors can expect technical and diverse trails that cater to various skill levels. Additionally, the resort exudes a local charm with welcoming riders, good food, and a laid-back atmosphere at the base.
Spent a day on the Mountain Coaster and the Downhill Mountain biking trails. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. The experience on the trails and the coaster we a thrill. Lots of families enjoying all of the many activities in a really scenic place. Met lots of more experienced regulars who had been to other bike parks and they continue to come back here because it's really that good. I can't wait to go back. Highly recommend checking this place out.

We had a blast ziplining last weekend—three hours of fun and gorgeous scenery. Our guides were phenomenal—hilarious and super professional. We were safe, learned a ton, and laughed the whole time. We’ll be back for the other tour with faster, longer zip lines. If you’re driving from Boston or any distance, allow extra time; our ETA kept ticking up and it was worth the drive. With the mountain coaster, bike trails, and nearby towns to explore, we’re planning an overnight next time.

Went for the first with family and friends and we absolutely loved it, we did the scenic ski lift and the mountain coaster. Definitely worth the ride there, we’re from Springfield not too far. We will be back to do the bike rentals. We did eat there food was great and prices are decent, friendly all around staff. Views are breathtaking.
Annie F — Google review
This place was picturesque beautiful and staff here (for the most part) were friendly. Activities were all pretty much close to each other. I truly feel there should be more outdoor seating areas available, especially at the top near the scenic chair lift drop off. There is only ONE picnic table. The other down side is the signage. Some of the signage is really hard to see. There are some small square signs maybe 5 or 6" with directions or instructions of where to enter or what to do and you don't even see them at times. The restrooms were difficult to find. There weren't even ANY signs for those, until you were basically in front of them. The restaurant felt cozy, warm and roomy. Food was good. Nachos' appetizer serving size did not disappoint. Onion rings were DELICIOUS! Wings were basic. They have thunder mountain coaster nearby, zip lining, tree tail adventure courses, hiking and biking trails and across the way you can do white water rafting. The scenic chair ride is the only thing you can receive a wrist band for and utilize more than once throughout the day. If going on the mountain coaster, be prepared to wait in line. We were a half hour early and we had a good 2 1/2 hour wait before it was our turn. There must have been 60 people ahead of us. I really wish the mountain coaster offered photo purchasing opportunities. After all, before you take off up the mountain, they have you give a thumbs up to the camera. Good place for families and couples.

First time there. My boyfriend and I went to go to the Mountain Coaster as a birthday gift that he wanted and we both had a blast and he absolutely loved it! Then we went on the chair lift as well and saw good views of the mountain. Food and be Cream was good too! We would like to come back and visit again and bring family!

The zip lining experience was absolutely amazing! Me and my husband went for our 10 year wedding anniversary and it was an awesome experience. I felt super comfortable with the instructors and they made us feel safe and able to relax and have fun! The only complaint I have was we bought tickets for the mountain coaster and it opens at 12 noon. So we finished up the ziplining at 1215, packed a quick lunch and went to go wait in line, it wasn’t very marked or organized well for what to do and I figured since we bought tickets online and already signed the release we would be ready to go, but we were told (after waiting in the first line for 30 mins) that the next line was a 2 hour wait which was disappointing. We had to leave due to time constraints and had to forfeit our tickets. Had we known we probably would have put our names in the queue for the line THEN ate lunch. I just wish it was communicated a little better, the email did say there was a wait usually, but 2 hours is a little crazy. Overall the place is really cool, and I was impressed with all the outdoor activities they had there. Thank you again to the wonderful instructors for an awesome anniversary to remember!

Great resort for fun with family and friends! We just spent a day there in Fall and had a wonderful time with our kids (4 and 7 years old). We hiked from the top of the mountain, took the coaster and spent time in the tree house. They also have a diverse lunch menu. This resort is a huge hub for mountain bikers. We will definitely bike together with the kids!

This is nice place ~2 hours away from west of Boston in MA We went on Memorial Day weekend to do mountain coaster. They have once of the longest and adventurous mountain coaster with decent prices. We did twice but you can buy other ticket which allows you to do it 3 times. We also did chairlift and went up the mountain where generally mountain bikers start their trail. Small restaurant at the place was also good with some veg options. Other activities were also looking great at this place and I am sure even during winters this must be a happening place Recommended

Thunder Mountain Bike Park, located at Berkshire East, was originally a ski resort but has since evolved into a year-round destination offering activities such as whitewater rafting, ziplining, and mountain biking. The park offers clinics for riders to improve their skills and learn how to maintain speed on trails. Visitors have praised the excellent service and coaching provided by the staff, making it an ideal spot for both beginners and experienced riders.
I live in Queens, so obviously Mountain Creek is closer, but once you go to Thunder Mountain, you are ruined and can never go back to Mtn Creek. I stayed for four days, pitched a tent at the base of mtn, stopped off at my tent for lunch, walked to the nicely provisioned bathrooms and showers. Week day are cheaper and less crowded, Thursday and Friday were no line days, where as Saturday and Sunday you are waiting on line(5-10min). The trails are so well maintained and have something for all levels of riders. Best experience in the North East!!!

Thunder Mountain Bike Park is pure joy! Trail design is brilliant, with lines that link corner to corner and airtime that feels effortless. Everything was running smooth, lifts on point, and the crew on the mountain was friendly and helpful all day. The maintenance shows because my bike stayed quiet and the dirt felt dialed. Great vibe in the lot, easy parking, and clear signage that makes exploring simple. I ride a lot of parks and this is easily one of my favorites. Five stars and a big thank you to the Thunder team for the therapy session on two wheels!

This place is amazing. After all the rain we had recently I had to compliment the trail crew for their outstanding work. You can see the amount of damage that has occurred. But the trails that were open were fantastic and flowing nicely. Not the older days when the trails would be washed out the rest of the season. Thank you trail crew this place rules 👊🏼
William B — Google review
Thankful for the lifties, trail crew, patrol and all staff. Nothing but respect. Weekends get busy cause it’s worth the wait in lines. Know your level and stay focused. Trails are properly maintained and rated imo, back of the shack my personal favorite, followed by Billy badger. Appreciate you all, respect the other riders as well all want safe and fun days on the mountain

I absolutely love this place. Better than Highlands.. sorry, I said it. Kicks a$$ in the winter as well.

Great lift-service bike park, beer, food, bike rentals. All flavors of trails; green, blue, black, double-black, red..respect the trail ratings..they mean it..but great place!

This is very friendly place, cannot recommend enough! Staff is awesome, and welcoming. I am forever thankful to the gentleman, with long hair, unloading the bikes. He pointed out that the front axle is loose on my son's bike. It was disaster waiting to happen, but I fixed it in time. Big Thank you!

My partner is crazy about Mtn Biking. I am, far less skilled but I find it fun/enjoyable on the easier levels. This place has both. It was my first downhill park experience and I still love it. Convenient parking. Public restrooms. Food. Drinks. Gift shop. Nice staff. Nice guests. All around fun experience.

Nestled in the charming town of Charlemont, Massachusetts, Berkshire Pizzeria is a delightful culinary gem that promises to satisfy your cravings. This beloved eatery serves up an array of mouthwatering dishes, with a special focus on their delectable pizzas made from fresh ingredients. Whether you choose to dine in and soak up the cozy atmosphere or opt for convenient curbside pickup or delivery, Berkshire Pizzeria ensures a warm welcome for all guests.
Stopped in for a quick snack before hitting some nearby hiking trails and was pleasantly surprised by the overall awesome experience we had at Berkshire Pizzeria! We originally ordered our pie to go (thanks to the very easy online ordering system!) but were quickly talked into enjoying our food on the back patio overlooking mountain views. We snacked on delicious homemade chips and dip while waiting for our pizza (SO GOOD!! Get the chips!! Do it!). Now onto the pizza, the crust was next level! The dough is so fresh and you can taste the love in every bite!! You know the love of a fresh baked bread? Now just imagine that with pizza :) This place is only a stone's throw away from Berkshire East and next time we're on the chair lift, I'm going to order a pizza to pick up after a day of skiing!! First time visiting this establishment and it absolutely won't be our last. 10/10 would recommend if you're in the area and looking phenomenal pizza 🍕 And if you're like me, and have a great sense of humor, you might consider purchasing one of their 'How I cut carbs' t-shirts

A very friendly and welcoming local pizzeria! We had a lovely conversation with the owner, who kindly brought us some homemade chips – they were amazing. The pizzas were both large and delicious – we ordered two large ones, each combining five different pizza types. We highly recommend stopping by and enjoying the experience. Plus, there’s a river nearby where you can take a swim – a perfect spot for a relaxing break!

Perfect lunch spot. Berkshire fresh chips with sweet onion dip didn’t make the photos cause they were gone before I could get my camera out haha… but they were excellent. Great fast service and beautiful views on the back deck. Thursday’s special wings were worth a lot more than I paid. Great spot on a road trip through VT

Good place for a “pit stop” on Main Street (MA Route 2) in Charlemont, MA. We were traveling from Williamstown back to Worcester, and this seemed like a good place to have a bite to eat and a beverage. Good selection of American fare — pizzas, wraps, burgers, and various beverages. Indoor seating or on the elevated deck in the back. As of June, 2025, the building has a “For Sale” sign on it; so, who knows what will happen in the future. Parking in the front; direct access from/to Rt. 2.

First time at this pizzeria. Delicious cheese, sausage and mushroom pizza with a "just right" crust. Ate on their deck, which had am amazing view of a mountain top with a wind turbine on it. Placed our order at counter and cheerful staff served it to us outside--quick and easy. Prices compatible with like restaurants. Loved this restaurant and will definitely return.

My fiancé and I stop here maybe 1 time a year when we travel into the area. It is ALWAYS where we stop for dinner and everytime without fail the food is amazing! We always go for a BBQ chicken pizza and their homemade potato chips and dip, the only issue is the dip is sooo good you never have enough of it! The staff are always friendly and the outside dining has a beautiful veiw of the mountain and trees. No complaints! For sure one of our favorite places to dine!

Delicious pizza, friendly staff, and a cozy mountain-view deck. Fresh ingredients, great vibe, and pet-friendly — a must-visit in Charlemont!

We took our Girl Scout troop white water rafting and decided to drop in. We are so happy we did! The pizza was super yummy and they even had a gluten free option. The staff and Service was excellent. They have a lovely outdoor seating area with great views too. I highly recommend!!

Nestled in a quiet corner of Massachusetts, Mohawk Trail State Forest spans over 6,000 acres of pristine woodland. It offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking along the historic Mahican-Mohawk Trail and exploring trails like Bear Swamp Hiking Trail and Shelburne Fire Tower trail for more challenging adventures. The forest is home to rivers and streams ideal for fishing, while its well-situated campground provides a serene setting among towering white pines.
My family just got back from the Mohawk Trail State Forest where we spent 3 days camping. We had both a tent site and a cabin (the older kids still wanted to experience tent life). We had an awesome time. The grounds were immaculate, the staff was friendly. The bathrooms were the cleanest I have ever encountered in a DCR facility. The highlight of our trip was the guided tour of some of the tallest trees in the Northeast, our “interpreter” was Christian, he was incredible! Very knowledgeable, friendly, and you could tell he loves his job! We will definitely be making a return trip!!

Started at the parking lot and walked the edge of the stream down to the waterfall. It was a nice walk. We found out on the way back that there is a trail between the road and stream if you prefer that. Very nice views and it’s amazing to see all the different rock formations and how the water eroded them differently. It has a few different shoots and little spillways. Some of the pools were loaded with tadpoles. I would love to come check it out again when the waters higher.

Stayed with my sisters. Always loved it. Never had a problem. They don't worry about fires being 5 in high and they let you enjoy your camping experience

Drove past this state forest on the Mohawk trail, didnt enter the state forest but the drive was pretty with mostly yellow fall colors.

Buy a can of spray paint. The trail markings are horrendous. In most cases nonexistent. We got SO LOST. The parks admin should be embarrassed. Clean up your act. We come for hikes to enjoy the beauty of our land, not to be stressed out.

The Boathouse Galley offers a unique dining experience with great food and a stunning riverside setting. It operates as a food truck serving a variety of American fare, including fried oysters, fish & chips, burgers, and more. The outdoor seating by the river provides the perfect backdrop for enjoying delicious comfort food. While it may not be ideal on wet or cold days, it's highly recommended for its tasty menu items and scenic views.
Great little hole in the wall greasy spoon. I'm not sure if the outside dining is just temporary until the building gets remodeled. I would not recommend on a wet rainy cold day but on a nice day out worth the trip from wherever you are. I think most everything is fried.
Thomas C — Google review
Stunning spot to have some fried oysters, fish &chips burgers and more- I was worried that the quality of food wouldn’t match the scenery- but my fish& chips were just right ( and I’m a Cape Codder- know my seafood ) go! Till Columbus Day!

Lunch with a view! There are many burger and seafood options. Highly recommended.

Great food and a unique dining experience. My friends and I stopped here after ziplining at a place next door. Found a food truck operating like a proper diner on a grassy lawn (the menu had a nice variety of American fare) with rustic outdoor seating next to the river. The scenery was perfect after a day spent outdoors and the food was delicious. Loved it!
Michelle M — Google review
The food experience here is just so fun. It's great food truck food but with the added ambience of being on the river and seeing beautiful sites. Everything on the menu is tasty and the atmosphere is always great
