Arlington in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Arlington, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Arlington, Vermont is a classic New England village set between the Green Mountains and the Battenkill River, known for its covered bridges, pastoral views, and historic charm. It was longtime home to illustrator Norman Rockwell, and visitors can explore local sites connected to his work and the town’s colonial-era roots. Outdoor enthusiasts come for fly-fishing on the Battenkill, hiking nearby trails, and enjoying fall foliage or winter scenery without big crowds. Its location between Manchester and Bennington also makes it a peaceful base for exploring southern Vermont’s shops, museums, and scenic byways.
With favorites like BRONWYN on Battenkill, Norman Rockwell Exhibition, and Equinox Mountain, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like BRONWYN on Battenkill so you can get the best taste of Arlington while you’re here. The Historic Arlington Covered Bridge is a picturesque gem nestled in the charming town of Arlington, Vermont. Spanning the serene Battenkill River, this well-preserved structure offers stunning views and serves as a perfect backdrop for memorable moments, including weddings and artistic endeavors. Visitors can enjoy a delightful day by picnicking on the grassy areas nearby or taking advantage of public parking to access the river for swimming or fishing.
A beautiful bridge crossing a river in VT that passes a cute little white church. It’s the scene people paint about and plan weddings at (for real). If you are planning a drive in VT make this a stop. There a a bunch of covered bridges in VT so this could be just one stop on a fantastic covered bridge adventure through Vermont.
Charlie M — Google review
One of Vermont’s historic covered bridges, well preserved, with parking, and a rope swing for those that just have to jump in and enjoy the Battenkill River. Less than 10 minutes from Manchester this is a must see item when in the area.
Joseph C — Google review
very beautifully situated in a mountain valley just a few short miles from the New York border! The world famous Battenkil runs underneath the covered bridge just a rock throw from Norman Rockwells house!! Amazing Experience!!! Highly recommend!

In the Middle of nowhere and I love that. Scenic drive to get to it and whoever loves water, will love this. It was beautiful and cool because you can drive thru it. It's a working bridge.
Ang — Google review
Beautiful covered bridge and swimming hole! Crisp clear water. Small sandy beach and sand/gravel bottom. The deepest part is up stream of the bridge at the river bend. Also a little bootleg rope swing there. Nice public parking and day use area for picnics on the grass. Respect the locals. Don’t litter.
Cyrus F — Google review
Very nice bridge on a quiet section of the stream. Great for fishing or launching inner tubes for a float.

Pretty spot. Peaceful. You can walk down to the water on either side.

Raft trip outfitter
Big Big on the Battenkill Kayak and Tubing offers an exciting river adventure for groups of all sizes. The cool, fast-flowing water provides a thrilling experience with beautiful views along the way. The owner ensures a smooth experience by providing clear instructions and prompt pick-up and delivery. Despite encountering some minor issues with rafts taking on water, the sturdy equipment held up well against potential hazards like trees and rocks in the river.
Thank you for wonderful courtesy ride. Water was little chilly at beginning but soon warm up. It was shallow in some parts . It still nice floating on battenkill river. Happy that i went.

Read the confirmation email carefully to get the meeting location. We were temporarily lost, but host was very responsive via cell phone. Great day!
Damian S — Google review
This place was super cool. We had a great time and great weather. The river was flowing fast because of all the rain. The entire trip was only like 90 mins but it was a lot of fun. We were flying down the river. Everything was easy to get to and we were picked up in a van by Kirsten right away. The drive back was very short. This was the highlight of our trip. We had a blast and would do it again. Highly recommend!
T.J. G — Google review
We had a wonderful time paddling and floating down the Battenkill with 2 adults and 5 kids ages 8-14. The kids had so much fun, the views were so beautiful, and the river was clear with a gentle flow that pulled us along. The owner made it so easy for us, we just parked and we’re shuttled to the river and then back to our car. She was friendly and very helpful. Highly recommend!
Jessica B — Google review
Unlike some others, I found the owner very courteous. She was unwilling to accept a reservation for two canoes until the last minute as the Battenkill was running high and fast; I very much appreciate her concern for safety related to this. However these photos are of the canoes that were set out for our use at the launch site. One has a large tear in the outer layer, in front of a large crushed section. The other obviously appears to be more patch than original canoe. I advised her that was unacceptable and she returned us to our car and did arrange for a refund on the spot. They do appear to have lots of new tubes for rent, but until they replace their current canoes, I advise against renting canoes that are grossly unsafe.
Michael P — Google review
Floating the Battenkill river was lovely, but would use a different outfit for rafting/tubing. Our family made a group reservation and showed up on time. Maybe they are too thinly staffed which is causing them to be super stressed - but without explanation, the owner was unusually rude and rushed. During our orientation, she dismissed questions about where to get out of the river, or about safety - even from our kids. She pointed us in the direction to walk to find the tubes saying “it’s too far for me to show you." After rafting, when we got out of the river and walked up to designated pickup point, she was “agro” accd to our kids, basically yelling at us and insisting we pay extra because we had used a few floats of a different type that we hadn’t paid for. There was no signage at the place we had walked to to pick up our floats and get into the river with no supervision. If there is a different charge for certain floats, it would make sense to post prices and also tell us during the orientation not to use certain floats - they all looked like single person flotation devices to us. The owner refused to let us board the shuttle back to our cars until we agreed to pay more, telling us in a very combative way she refused to drive us back and she wouldn’t give us back our car keys unless we gave her more money. Super unprofessional and somewhat scarring after a beautiful time on the river. Our kids are still upset with how she treated us and a little freaked she was so threatening. Guess the silver lining is it spurred a conversation about how to handle this kind of bullying and intimidation if we ever encounter it again. Do not recommend, especially for families - we are shocked this outfit is still in business when there are other options.
Aileen L — Google review
Had a great day on the river, party of 8. Water was cool and fast, views lovely. Owner prompt in pick up and delivery, gave instructions on where to get in and out. Had one small raft which took on water with one adult/one child on board, but was easily fixed by switching a lighter child to raft and Dad/son to larger tube. Happily did not have any tubes popped by multiple trees/rocks along river, they were nice and study and well filled. Would help to have some sort of sign for where to park, glad others were standing around in swim suits waiting when we arrived so we were sure we were in the right place.

Located as a part of the Sugar Shack in Vermont. This was an interesting find on our way through Vermont while exploring covered bridges. Walk into the Sugar Shack and turn right to find lots of prints and history surrounding the famous artist Norman Rockwell.
Charlie M — Google review
Fun little exhibit for fans of Norman Rockwell. It's small but really cool to see inside Sugar Shack, which, is also a good place to shop for reasonably priced Vermont maple syrup.
Wayne C — Google review
The SUGAR SHACK is "the" place to visit in Vermont. No trip is complete without a tastey maple ice cream and fresh cider donut sandwhich or a waffle with lightly flavored maple ice cream and BURBON maple syrup drizzled on top.Kim, the owner, is a wealth of information on the process of making the maple sap magically transform into syrup. There is a decent sized shed on site that houses the mysterious device that converts raw sap into sweet flavored liquid. Sap can not been stored and needs to be cooked when collected. The Pinterest worthy reciepe and process is explained in educational details on location. Kim's husband fills each bottle by hand and secures the tops. It is a fun and educational stop for children. The stores is filled with delicious goodies, warm hoodies - sweats -fleeces and the ever popular " I'D TAP THAT" shirt line. There are fun items for kids of ALL ages. Free hot cider greets you upon arrival, Fresh gourmet cheeses and goodies are too tempting to pass up! Norman Rockwell was a native. Who used over 200 local residents in his famous art work. There are individual pictures of the men, women and children he immortalized with their individual stories and photos for each illustration he did.His stories literally COME ALIVE for you. The exhibit is FREE and prints and souvenirs can be purchased.Great for home schooling and field trips during these Covid times ! Picnic tables are available outside. You will be delighted when you stop in. This is NO ordinary tourist stop during your fall foliage trek. This is an AMAZING learning experience and PURE JOY for your taste buds. Children get excited to learn when an artist pictures come alive for them with personalized stories. Heck, they might even be interested in crossing the coveted bridge and seeing Norman Rockwell's home near by!! You can purchase products on line or through their Face book page. There are lots of items you can only get in store as inventory is always growing with new items added. However you order, be sure to tell them. "AMY" sent ya!

I loved that this was a free exhibit and gave a lot of information on Norman Rockwell. Most, if not all, of his prints are available to see and read the story behind it. There is a movie that you can watch, but we did not. Plus its located inside the Sugar Shack where you can stock up on syrup and other goodies!
Sarrah L — Google review
I don’t even know where to start! First: this place is a small shop tucked away and well worth the drive! Second: all of the employees were super kind and helpful! Third: the food/snacks...ok the syrup first, the dark and very dark were our favs. Absolutely amazing! Smoked cheddar was by far the best tasting smoked cheddar I’ve ever had. Maple taffy was so perfect. The maple glazed cookies were to die for, why did we only get 6?! We haven’t tried everything yet. But it all looks and smells so amazing. Highly recommend if you are traveling though or anywhere near the area make the trip here and buy some local made products and foods!

We stopped at the delightful Sugar Shack several months ago to view their Norman Rockwell display...We were impressed by the exhibit and the selection of Vermont made products...We chatted with the owner and promised her a replacent of the worn Saturday Evening Post cover...We delivered it last weekend during a foliage drive...The owner and her husband are a very hard working couple that enjoy their shop & patrons...Definitely worth a stop or a drive...Be sure to get a donut!
Donald H — Google review
Exhibit is in Norman Rockwell's home town. It's inside a gift/maple syrup shop and features Norman's photos of many local residents. Worth a stop if you like Rockwell's work. They also have great apple cider donuts that are addictive.

Cute little store that exhibits his work. It's called the Sugar Shack you can't miss it. Don't forget to pick up some Maple syrup that is made by the them as well..it's yummy! You can sample the different unique syrups!

Great mountain top drive. Many locations on the way to take scenic photos. The mountain top has amazing views and details to read. The best time to visit is during summer.

Absolutely stunning drive with views that take your breath away! The road is smooth and safe, and each overlook offers an incredible perspective of Vermont’s beauty. The summit is peaceful and unforgettable—100% worth the trip!

Amazing view. There are bathrooms in the building on the top of the mountain. The top is quite windy and cold, there are 2 tables inside the building, we brought our lunch. There are some tables outside too.
DaDa — Google review
Fantastic views as you climb and at the top but it might smell like something's burning as you come down the mountain. That would be your brakes or somebody else's brakes. If you don't know how to engine brake, highly recommend learning before you descend!
Peter — Google review
The drive to the top was on a wide and well maintained road with several scenic spots to pull off. At the top, there was a building with multiple viewing decks and several quiet spots to sit and take in the views. There were also trailheads leading on various hiking paths. This was an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon.
Mark W — Google review
2nd time here. Well worth the ride up for the views and history. Bring layers of clothes like hats, mittens and gloves in fall and winter as it is windy and cold.

Amazing views!!!! The chapel inside took my breath away.... I will be bringing my friend to sit in this chapel and enjoy the mountain

Drive to the top and arrive at the pavilion for a breathtaking view and learning center. Interesting history about the monastery. I feel like 90% of people don’t know there is a trail behind the building, but it’s not for anyone with bad knees. It’s about 10 minutes but it does go up and down.

BRONWYN on Battenkill is a charming restaurant and bar located in Arlington, Vt, offering a blend of German-inspired cuisine with Vermont's local produce and craft beer. Chef Tim Wiechmann showcases his cultural heritage through hand-crafted sausages, pork schnitzels, traditional noodles, Riesling sauerkraut, and giant fresh baked pretzels.
A must stop. German food mixed with diverse choices. German drafts and local Vermont ipas. Decor is unique with high backed that look to belong in castles. This is a fun place you can hide in a corner or participate in lovely bar conversations. Friendly service excellent food. Easy parking.

We had a fun evening at Brownyn. The server was hilarious and made our experience entertaining and enjoyable. They offer a variety of beer with three size options. The pretzel was tasty although the mustard had more horseradish than we like. The pork schnitzel is all of the hype and more. Absolute perfection. The bratwurst and potatoes were tasty as well. This is a must when in Arlington.
LC B — Google review
Honestly some of the best loaded potato’s I’ve ever had. The schnitzel and curry patty were okay. The burger was good. The ice cream Sunday. was really good and the chocolate mousse was OK.
Will M — Google review
Super delicious German food in a beautiful space. Inside enjoy the dark stained wood with high backed chairs or benches. Outside looked like great outdoor seeing - like a bier garden. They're currently decorated up for October fest 9/20-10/24 or something. The food was definitely phenomenal. We took advantage of the 3 course prix fixe menu and enjoyed the beet salad, fried pierogi, schnitzel, sausage with spetzel, mousse and donuts. All of the food was fantastic.
Avram G — Google review
Attended their Octoberfest celebration so it was a busy weekend but they should staff accordingly. There was no dedicated hostess. & it seemed a bit chaotic. The best thing we did was sat at the bar waiting for our table and shared a huge giant homemade Bavarian pretzel with delicious maple butter - a definite must! I felt like I was back in Germany! Unfortunately, I did not care for the homemade Bratwurst. And was very disappointed when they ran out of ice cream to put on the homemade strudel with apples and raisins, which was fabulous. What restaurant runs out of vanilla ice cream? Especially during an Octoberfest weekend!! And half of the music they played during dinner was American songs - a bit disappointing! I would highly recommend the beef brisket with German potato salad and red cabbage!!
Ryan G — Google review
So happy to have found this place when looking for something new before attending a play at Arlington Commons. Food tastes were amazing - every single bite. German food is my heritage, and the chef's minor Vermont adaptations make everything wonderful. Will definitely return!

Went in with a low expectations since we were in the middle of nowhere but left with a lot of surprise!! Good atmosphere!! It was packed with local people as well.

I absolutely loved my experience at Bronwyn. I used to come here a lot when it was Chauncey's, so my expectations were really high when I saw this replaced it. Needless to say my expectations were exceeded. Bronwyn has delicious, authentic German cuisine. They have a lot of great options on the menu, and I chose the bronburger. This wonderful burger had beef brisket, slab bacon, aged cheddar, sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard, and cucumbers on a delectable German bun. Everything blended together very well and tasted so delicious. It was no surprise to hear this restaurant is chef owned. I also like that they added a large back patio with plenty of seating and a stage. The atmosphere overall was very pleasant, the service was excellent, food was exquisite, staff was friendly, and prices weren’t too bad. I have nothing but great things to say about this place. I highly recommend going to Bronwyn for a wonderful, authentic German meal.
