Johnston Ridge Observatory is a visitor center located near the summit of Mount St. Helens, which offers interpretive displays, ranger talks and a gift shop. It is named after scientist David Johnston who was killed by the mountain's lateral blast. The observatory provides stunning vistas of the crater with smoke rising from it, showcasing the unique nature of this mountain.
I was absolutely amazing, it’s a shame that you cannot make it all of the way to the observatory. The photos of Mt Saint Helens are the two parking lots between mile marker 40 and 50.
Todd J — Google review
Hiked up to the observatory from the lower parking lot and Hummocks trail starting point. Only way up to the ridge is via the Boundary Trail. Sandy single track winds it way up the ridge with amazing views of Mt. St Helen’s and the lower river basin. Took 2.5 litres of water each person on a 34c day temp wise. The total trip was just under 4 hrs and 16km. I found poles handy for descending. Bear poop in the area but we did not see any.
Aaron M — Google review
Hummocks Trail to Boundary West Trail and you can still access this beautiful place. Feels apocalypic, we were the only ones up there for at leest an hour. Nature is taking over, lots of plants on the parking lot and outdoor theatre. Views of the mountain are amazing. Worth the 10 mile hike!

I recently traveled here and it was amazing. Mt. St. Helen's is in bird's-eye view. There is a gift shop on sight if you wanted to purchase some goodies from your visit here. There is plenty of parking and a coffee stand if you wanted a good cup of coffee and a light refreshment. The walk up is really nice and paved. There are also hiking trails available. I would highly recommend going here.
LunaWolf — Google review
Beautiful spot to get a good look at Mt Saint Helen's, good for all ages an abilities. Once you park you'll have to walk up a hill to the center, but it's all paved ect an wheelchair accessible. There's a little loop that is paved, but has some rough spots. We hiked up to Coldwater peak, was cloudy so couldn't see a lot but was beautiful. Got to hangout with a couple goats while we had lunch
Mark A — Google review
Got there Sunday, just as they were closing (6pm), but had enough time to get some souvenirs. The prices were fair, and they had a nice selection. The views were spectacular! We got some beautiful photos. The roads are well maintained, with some great pulloffs. Keep in mind that they're dark, steep and windy, so don't stay up there too late. This was a "bucket list" item that SHOULD HAVE BEEN on my list - do yourself a favor and put it on yours!
Patricia V — Google review
Amazing views of the crater! On a clear day you can see the smoke rising and the growing nature of this unique mountain. There are many trails and walkways in summer. In winter its a long hard hike and careful planning as its around 14 miles round trip. The road is gated just after the Coldwater lake, hence the walk will be long and will need snowgear in winter. Either way in all seasons its amazing!
Neo X — Google review
This is an awesome place! We have been there two times. The volcano is beautiful. There is a movie, which could be better. Seems out dated and poor quality. There should be more about a David Johnston. Love when the curtain opens!! Nice hiking trails. Beautiful scenery all around. A great experience!!

A hidden gem...a bit of a drive to get to, but worth the effort. Usually, a reservation is needed to tour the Gardens. We showed up with no reservation; we met the owner, Ellie and her husband. Very friendly and welcoming. Ellie gave us a personal tour of the Gardens, after, she allowed us to go back by ourselves and take all the pictures we wanted. Picturesque, whimsical, vibrant, colorful...a Gem! There's no charge to tour the Gardens. The Owners also have a AirBnB available on the property. It is Charming, Cozy and it looks very comfortable. It offers an outside shower under the trees, a hot tub and a sauna. There are also two double Hammocks outside. Idyllic!

Being at the garden is treatment for my soul. There is a sense of balance and well being. The land speaks to me here. It is loved. The stay is relaxing and feels like home. The bungalow is comfortable and brings a sense of peace. The hydrotherapy circuit is relaxing and leaves me feeling relax and ready to sit and mediate or take a nap. To truly just focus on myself and what my body is needing in the moment. The owners Ellie and David are amazing and always available for questions.
Beckey C — Google review
My husband and I spent two GLORIOUS days here! David and Ellie are beautiful souls who kindly greeted us and walked us through some special instructions for our stay. We immediately loved their energy and felt their love for the space they created and the vision they have for their guests experience. The gardens are spectacular and a perfect setting for walking meditation, this experience is made even more transcendent when preceded by indulging in a hydrotherapy circuit. The sauna, hot tub, cold plunge and outdoor shower are all A++! Multiple times during our stay we found ourselves in awe of the obvious massive amount of love, care and hard work it took and continues to take for this dream of creating a private healing and meditation oasis to become a reality. Every stone placed, flower planted, pathway laid out. Truly inspiring! Our short stay at Stillmeadows garden retreat exceeded our expectations. If you’re looking for a place to unplug to recharge, look no further. We’re already planning our next visit. Thank you David and Ellie for creating such a sacred space and for sharing it with others. Many blessings to you both.

Great little place to stop and talk to Bill about the mountain. Bill and his crew do a great job presenting the observations of the catastrophe in this area and applying it to others we see around the world. Solid, scientific answers for layers and fossils worldwide based on actual observations from the mountain that anyone can study! Good presentation and wife assortment of books and materials. Also took a trip with Bill up to the mountain and despite a rainy, cloudy day we got a lot of information and great fellowship from the day. Planning to head back later in the week when the weather is supposed to be better. Really appreciate the time spent here. I don't know how they operate with such low rates for tours and things!

Loved this little hidden gem! Great place to take the kids and learn about how God created our world with science. They show real science about why our Earth isn't millions of years old. Volunteer was amazing and did a great job explaining things while also letting us explore on our own! We took our kids 5, 7, 9 and had a great time exploring fossils. The other side went over Mt St Helen's eruption and how it explains dating. We will go back to really dive deep into that side!
J K — Google review
Nice collection of fossils, and an exhibit on Mount St. Helens' eruption and how it relates to the Bible and evolution. There is a video that is shown and a book store as well. The person at the front desk is very knowledgeable and friendly and the museum is free.
Gergely K — Google review
Mr. Bill and volunteers are awesome. He has a loving heart for God, His creation. Small museum but full of treasures. Great place to learn more about creation, and science.
SD R — Google review
The Creation Center offers a different perspective than what a lot of "secular scientists" have come to accept. While I'm not opposed to people holding the beliefs offered here, actually reading what they have in their exhibits is a stretch on the data they have. Some of their conclusions feel like a high schooler changing the meaning of a source in their term paper to support their thesis. This museum is informative, but I found it more useful to learn about how creationist scientists approach evolution than actually learning about what they believe. One example: they claim evolution cannot be real due to the lack of transitional fossils between species. There are several fossils which arguably could show species evolving (Lucy comes to mind). Separately, fossils are rare due to the several sets of conditions which need to happen in order for fossils to form. By not acknowledging this, they present a false argument on the side of "secular scientists" which is much easier to dismantle. It's not very scientific on their end. The staff I interacted with were very kind and pleasant to interact with.
Vivian K — Google review
The Mount Saint Helens Creation Center not only provides information about the history of the eruption of Mount Saint Helens, but it also provides scientifically validated information regarding the creation of the Earth that is in harmony with the Bible. Kids and adults of all ages will enjoy the displays and the history.
Linda S — Google review
We had a class field trip to Mt. St. Helens through the excursion experience with the Mt. St. Helens Creation Center! It was absolutely amazing. The beginning presentation was so interesting and informative. The driving was a tad much, but it was well worth the effort. Visiting all the sites was a wonderful display of God's power and creativity, just breathtaking. The tour guide, who's also the centers director, was so knowledgeable! You could tell he loves Jesus and wants others to know Him by showing the geological evidence that supports scripture. Time and time again, he referred back to scripture. It truly was a wonderful time. We will be back. Thank you!
Rachel S — Google review
Absolutely worth your time if you are willing to do some reading or actively ask questions. Those who do not actively engage may not get very much out of this place. There is an excellent video that is worth watching. They also do day trips on/around the mountain.

Not to far off the beaten path. A quick 10 minutes off the freeway, I'm glad a stopped. The building was closed but I was able to walk behind the building to the boardwalk over the Lilly pads for a very scenic view. It was s flat short full circle hike. Was able to take some great pictures!

This visitor center is a good place to start if you’re coming down from the north side on I-5. The very welcoming staff at the information desk can help you plan your visit. The outdoor area, an accessible .6 mile trail and restrooms, are free to the public. Indoors, a small but well curated museum is open with $5 admission. Kids 6 and under are free, but honestly the material is best suited for grades 3 and up.

We arrived at the perfect time—just before three large buses of visitors pulled in! That gave us a peaceful window to explore the lakeside trail and take in the views before heading into the interpretive center and gift shop. The staff here are always so friendly, helpful, and incredibly knowledgeable. You can tell they’re passionate about the area and its history. We appreciated how accessible everything was, and parking was a breeze when we arrived around 1:30 PM. The center itself offers a great blend of information, interactive displays, and a well-curated gift shop. It’s a great stop for anyone wanting to learn more about the 1980 eruption, local ecology, and the mountain’s ongoing story. Highly recommend timing your visit mid-afternoon if you want to avoid the crowds

I remember coming here as a child and have fond memories of seeing the displays and especially the "lava hole". Coming back as an adult, I remember how awesome the facility is and building is! Very cathedral like and awesome hand carved reliefs around the structural posts. Cool Japanese tile throughout. It's no wonder this is the most or one of the most visited Park centers in Washington. I got to help with some exibits and it was an honor to be there. Well worth the visit.

A cute little visitor center and museum for Mount St. Helens. We went on a rainy day so it was pretty empty. Grabbed a few souvenirs and walked through the wetlands behind the center. It was a beautiful and easy loop and made the stop worth it!
Julia W — Google review
No pass was needed for the visitor centers we stopped at, there is electronic pay meter for the picnic area and boat ramp at Coldwater Lake, can use America The Beautiful pass for these areas. Bountiful information and hands on activities even the kids will enjoy! Go in the theaters and watch the show giving insight into the eruption. The road to Johnston Ridge is closed due to washed out bridge and roadway, says repairs may be done by 2027 or 2028. We were here on a cloudy day so could not see the Crater. This was at the science and exploration center for Coldwater Lake. Beautiful views and easy drive even towing our 5th wheel RV.

A great place to start your visit to Mount Saint Helens Volcanic Monument. There are historic descriptions of the indigenous First Nations that populated the area, scientific displays, educational movies, and a comprehensive exploration of the events leading up to the May 18, 1980 eruption.

Loved this cozy little campground! The sights are a little close together, but there's enough foliage to block The view for the most part. There are clean bathrooms and a shower, along with potable water.

We were lucky enough to get a site last Saturday evening for the night. It was a great camp ground, we can't wait to plan a trip there and stay for more than 1 night. The gal that helped us at the Ranger Station was so nice and very helpful. I didn't get her name but the initials on my receipt are KW, she spoke with a great accent and was just the nicest, helpful person for someone that had never been there before and was asking several questions.

We're a family of 6. We really enjoyed our stay. There's not a lot of privacy but the amenities are worth the fees. Hot showers, clean bathrooms and a park. Everything is very well kept. We had 1 large tent and 2 smaller ones at site 21 and had plenty of room.

We stopped here to see views of Mt St Helens but it was so foggy/hazy you could barely see it. We purchased some souvenirs and were about to leave and were telling our disappointment to the Ranger/worker and they suggested driving about 30 minutes more to Toule to the Forest science center. Thank you so much for the information. It was spectacular!

Had a great time camping and checking out Mt St Helens Visitor Center nearby from the connecting trail. The sites and bathrooms were in good shape.

Seaquest State Park is a fantastic place to camp in an RV, tent, or even a Yurt! It’s also a great place to have a picnic in the day use area, where there is a small playground, and swings. There is also an abundance of horseshoe pits (Discover Pass Required)! It is a short walk/hike to Mount St Helens Visitor center, and the Silver Lake Wetlands Trail. Which has beautiful views of Mt St Helens, and Silver Lake. There is even a tunnel going under the highway connecting the two, so you don’t need to play Frogger getting there! The campground has fairly spacious sites, fire rings, and pick nick tables on concrete slabs. I do have to say that there is little to no privacy between most of the sites in the RV loop, but for the price with full hookups it is worth it! The only downside that I truly saw is that the sewer connections are pretty high off the ground, so your standard sewer trellis is almost useless if you don’t want standing water in the line! The bathrooms are clean enough to use. In the RV loop there is one stall with a toilet and a shower in the men’s and women’s bathroom, which might be problematic during the busy season! There is a pay per use dump station, as well as drinking water near the exit of the campground…which is a plus if you didn’t have a full hookup site! There are many hiking trails around the campground and park area, most of which appear to be easy to possibly moderate, depending on your abilities. A WORD TO THE WISE, FROM MY UNDERSTANDING THE ONLY SITES THAT HAVE RUNNING WATER THIS TIME OF YEAR IS IN THE RV LOOP, AND THE REST OF THE SITES YOU HAVE TO GET WATER FROM THE POTABLE WATER AT THE DUMP STATION BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE HAS BEEN WINTERIZED! All in all, we had a wonderful relaxing time, and we will be back to this State Park!

Food was great, fresh, and plentiful. 3 meals and 1 appetizer was more than enough for a family of 5 with leftovers! We would return but it would be better if there was indoor seating.

We ordered the appetizer combo... obviously to go, as they don't allow dine in. We have ate there many times in the past and have had good food.. within the last few years after having continuous bad experiences, we keep saying, "we will give them on more chance." Not after tonight! Never again! I found a hair in my crab puff and my bbq pork felt like it just came out of the fridge and was super dried out!

We ordered the honey walnut shrimp, chicken chow mein -and the sesame chicken. With spring rolls also. First of all the portions were huge, enough for lots of leftovers. The order of spring rolls were supposed to be 4 but we had 6!! Even with my picky eater, he loved the sesame chicken. He’s 14 and can eat a lot , even so he had enough leftovers for a whole new meal. We all did actually, 3 of us. The noodles were spot on. My hubby really enjoyed the fried rice and even had seconds, still plenty for another meal. We live in Toutle and that’s definitely our new go to for chinese food! 😋

Service was good, the food was really nice and the portion sizes were huge! Great value for money, relaxing environment and friendly people made it a really enjoyable pit stop on the way to Ape Cave. Will def be back

We 3 stopped in August 9th 2025 on our way home from the Mt. St Helen's road trip, we were starving. We found this random restaurant not far off the highway. And went in and tried a bite to eat. The food was incredible. And so was the staff, the portions were good, hot, and delicious. If I am ever in that area again, I will definitely stop back in. Highly recommend.

The chicken fried steak, although huge, was chewy, the breading was gummy, and it had no flavor. They served it with all the gravy underneath the meat, so when you tried to cut it, it just slid and squished all over the plate. Not good. My spouse had an omelet, which he said was fine, but it was really skimpy on the cheese, considering it was a 3 meat and 3 cheese omelet. The cost of our meal for the chicken fried steak, an omelet, and 1 coffee was 51 bucks, not counting the tip. Not worth that. I was hoping for better.
Lisa R — Google review
Had the Salisbury steak (basically a hamburger smothered in gravy) served with small diced green peppers with mushrooms. A side of mashed potatoes, corn in its own dish, and a slice of bread with butter. Before the meal came out, they served a cup of soup. After the meal, they served a good piece of strawberry cheesecake. All that for just $22. I thought it was pretty fair

Great diner, great selection, prices are a bit high and like many other places, do not provide incentive to get the smaller portion ($1 off for half portions is ridiculous, someone needs to explain why that is such a common economic model in that area). Food is very good, flavorful, large portions. Chili is unique, very good in an omlette will have to try on its own sometime. Staff is friendly and tries to accommodate. Definitely worth going to for different meals in the same weekend. Music was great for people my age (classic rock).
