Ilwaco is a small harbor town at the mouth of the Columbia River, known for its working marina and easy access to both river and ocean fishing. It serves as a gateway to Cape Disappointment State Park, where you’ll find dramatic coastal cliffs, beaches, two historic lighthouses, and Lewis and Clark interpretive sites. The town itself offers a compact waterfront with galleries, eateries, and seasonal markets that highlight the region’s maritime and fishing heritage. Its location on the Long Beach Peninsula also makes it a convenient base for exploring nearby dunes, trails, and Pacific beaches.
With favorites like Port of Ilwaco, Serious Pizza +, and Cape Disappointment State Park, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like At The Helm Hotel & Waterline Pub and Serious Pizza + so you can get the best taste of Ilwaco while you’re here. Nature & Parks
Historical landmark
Cape Disappointment State Park, located at the mouth of the Columbia River in Washington, spans 1,882 acres and offers a diverse range of natural attractions. Visitors can explore two historic lighthouses, scenic trails that traverse various ecosystems including beaches, dunes, and forests with ancient trees. The park also features the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center which recounts the famous expedition's history. Additionally, remnants of Fort Canby and eight miles of forested hiking trails are available for exploration.
We had a great time camping here. We stayed in site C 167 it was a really nice spot with a quick pathway to the beach. (166 & 167 would be 2 great spots together) The campground was pretty full but stayed relatively quiet. Clean restrooms but a bit small for the amount of people it had to service. Lots of great hiking trails throughout the campground. 2 lighthouses & lots of great history to see & read about. I would definitely recommended Cape Disappointment if your looking for a beautiful campground with lots to do. Also it's a great place to bring your bike & dog.

Don't miss this beautiful park, especially on a sunny and clear day. The views of the mouth of the Columbia River and Pacific Ocean are delightful. The Lewis and Clark Museum does a wonderful job of describing the journey they took and challenges they faced, the movie is well done. There are restrooms in the museum and picnic tables in several areas. Enjoy!

Went here for the first time recently despite our many previous visits to the Long Beach peninsula. We had our Discovery Pass (either get a $10 pass or better yet get the $30 annual pass) so we explored all the "nooks and crannies"of this special and unique park including Cape Disappointment Light House, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Bell's View Overlook, Beard's Hollow Overlook, and Waikiki Beach! Plenty of parking throughout the park on our trip during a Thursday in early August. The weather was nice and cool but definitely windy in some spots along the coast.
Quincy R — Google review
This place is definitely worth visiting. I hiked the North Head Trailhead, which is 3 miles out and back with an average of a 500ft elevation gain. It is a moderate trail, with a lot of increases and decreases along the way. The forest views are stunning and from one vantage you can view the sea. I also did the easy walk out to North Head Lighthouse, and guests can book to stay in one of the former keeper’s residences. I did not get to hike out to Cape Disappointment because parking is very small at the trail head. I think there is another way to access it by trail, but after 4 hours of hiking, I was all set. I would say get there early to park if there is a specific place you want to visit and if you aren’t camping already in the park. I will be back! I have to get to Deadman’s Cove and Cape Disappointment.
Jennifer A — Google review
A pretty substantial campground with a variety of types of sites (power, water, yurt, etc.). Many of the sites are rather open and lack privacy if you plan to use a tent. We had a really nice fire pit with a convenient way to raise and lower the cooking surface. Be prepared for potentially strong cold breeze off the ocean and racoons rummaging around in the morning.
Josh — Google review
We came out for a few days to hike and go to the beach and I've wanted to come here since I was a kid. We brought our dog who is kind of old so we couldn't do the longer trails. But we did a few short ones and met a lot of other cute dogs :) the lighthouse gift shop was a little over priced but we still got a little sticker and poster to bring home. Really wonderful walk. And it wasn't too busy because it was overcast.

Cape Disappointment State Park is an absolute gem on the Washington coast. The park offers breathtaking scenery everywhere you look, from dramatic cliffs and dense evergreen forests to sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia River. The park is very well maintained, with clean trails, well placed signage, and public restrooms that are impressively clean. Parking and access are straightforward, and the park is easy to reach by car, making it convenient for a day trip or a longer stay. One of the highlights is the sunset. Watching the sky transform into shades of orange, pink, and purple over the ocean! Whether you’re cycling, walking, or taking in the lighthouse, Cape Disappointment is perfect!

Cape Disappointment quickly became one of our favorite camp spots since our first visit a few years ago. There is so much to explore and experience - from camping practically right on the beach (tent, yurt or trailer), hiking one of the many trails, exploring its historical background through trails and the interpretive center, nature exploration and just breathtaking views, to being just a short drive from Long Beach and Astoria and all they have to offer. Worth a visit or a stay!

It's a short hike to the currently operating ligthhouse. You pass by the keepers residence (which I believe is something you can book), and the gift shop. The view at the lighthouse is spectacular. We were there on a windy day...hold on to your hat! The hike is much easier that the one to cape Disappointment Lighthouse., a good alternative for light house viewing.

Pretty lighthouse atop a bluff overlooking the water. Excellent vantage point to look for migrating gray whales. Easy walk from the parking lot, past beautiful lighthouse keepers lodging.
Kevin V — Google review
Great working piece of history. Guided tours at the top explained a lot about the history of the coastal area, shipwrecks. On a clear day you can sometimes see whales off the coast of Long Beach. Nice walking trails and picnic tables and benches throughout the park. Cute little gift shop.
Jessica M — Google review
What an incredible place to be at sunset. I've lived in the PNW my whole life and had never been here. We arrived at sunset and its hard to even describe how beautiful this place is and the history is fascinating. I would love to stay inside the lighthouse or one of the buildings surrounding during a severe storm.
Evaa B — Google review
Beautiful and well maintained lighthouse. The views are stunning. It would have been nice if they allowed public access to all the buildings. I recommend the visit, specifically if you are doing the Cape Disappointment trail.
Michael F — Google review
I always love a stop at North Head. Fabulous views. Part of the year you can climb to the top and hear some of the history of the lighthouse. Beautifully maintained.
Eva B — Google review
This is a beautiful lighthouse and grounds. You can rent the light house keepers houses for a stay! This is a working lighthouse. We were hoping to see a fresnel lens. That, however is at the Columbia Maritime museum in Astoria. You do have to go in the lighthouse and get on a visitor list to go upstairs. Not too long of a wait, and views are spectacular! Ver much worth the drive.

It was a bit of a walk but it was well worth it the view was absolutely breathtaking, dont forget to visit the gift shop, the clerk was extremely nice.

Great food, amazing service, and beautiful location. The servers are friendly and the drinks are creative. Highly recommend their fish tacos- those taste amazing with real fresh fish in there. The clam chowder soup is fab. The chicken tenders were prepared very well and had generous serving size. Highly recommend this place if you are visiting g Cape Disappointment State Park.

Amazing clam chowder, satisfied my craving. The views are amazing here. Great customer service. Highly recommend !! We asked to check out their hotel room for potential stay in the future and it is now in our to-do list, super cute and cozy.

What a great brunch! Excellent service. People are incredibly personable. I loved the salmon spread and the locally sourced clams in the clam chowder. I am so pleased to have dropped in. Do call in advance if you want to sit outside to place your name on their list.

Our family stopped by after visiting the Lewis and Clark center The food was great. The chowder, salad, and sandwiches we had were delicious and they had a nice selection of local beers on tap. Nice view of the marina and surrounding coast. Also had some really unique shirt/sweatshirt designs

BOMB FOOD!! This place has a little bit of everything!! We DEVOURED the clams in butter and garlic sauce! Perfect starter! DONT SKIP THE FISH TACOS! They have fresh fish of the day for the tacos! This day it was Cod and WOW so flavorful! The smoke salmon dip with homemade pita chips was also delightful!

Stopped to eat here. The Salmon Mac was delicious! My friends enjoyed their orders too, and the service was great.

09/02/24: Wonderful meal. Friendly service. Clam chowder is cooked to order. Burger and tuna melt were delicious. Tuna melt came open faced topped with tomatoes. No complaints.

We dined here in April 2023 on a rainy evening and both my husband and I ordered the crab and shrimp mac and cheese! Wowzers! So good!!! So much flavor and loved the presentation!! I'm pretty easy to please on presentation though - ha. I was between two cocktails offered on the menu, so I let the bartender choose for me and boy was it fantastic! Everyone dining around us was enjoying their drinks and food, wasn't a face without a smile in the restaurant. We are looking forward to visiting again! High and low tables and bar seating options. Indoor and outdoor seating. Lovely view! There was a young toddler with a couple while we were there and it was completely pleasant, so I could this being family friendly.

Love the port, especially on Saturday market days. Lots of shops, good eats and the location is a great place to relax, walk the pets, and enjoy the coastal weather. Definitely stop into the local artist shops! Some amazing work there. We’ve bought a couple original pieces from artists there.

Nice marina area, great for a stroll. A worthwhile visit. Interesting shops and art galleries. Couple of nice inns and restaurants as well. Good place to book a fishing excursion or buy fresh catch. Stroll through town and visit an other shops and the museum, check out the pottery if you get a chance. Lots of history in this lil town.

We went here on our way to Long beach...decided to check out the Saturday market. Very cool vibe, nice people, beautiful view

The exit to the open ocean. The most dangerous place a little further is the place where the river flows into the ocean: there are big waves there, and boats can capsize.

Beautiful day out today. Took a nice walk along the port. Will be even better to come back during the season and after covid when everything is open again.

One of the best fishing ports on the West Coast but those who run it do not seem to realize it's a fishing port. There is nowhere to clean a fish in this entire port. Other parts close by have multiple fish cleaning stations

At The Helm Hotel & Waterline Pub is a charming boutique hotel located across from the port, offering cozy and casual accommodations. Guests have praised the warm hospitality and spacious, well-equipped rooms with thoughtful amenities like a wine fridge and filtered water. The on-site Waterline Pub provides a pleasant dining experience with delicious food, including homemade chips, and a selection of local beers. Visitors also appreciate the stunning views from the terrace and the welcoming atmosphere of both the hotel and pub.
The wife and I stayed here during a trip up the coast a couple of weeks ago. I will say I've stayed in a couple spots in and near illwaco now, and for a small fishing town, this place is luxury. If you are someone accustomed to a little more fancy and staying in this awesome little town, this is your place. Whoever put together the rooms did a great job. Each room is a little different with its own touch. The upstairs rooms are a little more spacious. The complimentary beer or wine on arrival is an awesome perk. I wish I remembered the gals name who took care of us, but she did great getting us booked unannounced, helping us get situated before the hockey game started while also running the restaurant.
Kalai C — Google review
Highly recommend! Upon arriving we were greeted with a smile and offered a glass of wine, beer or cider. We stayed in Elena N, a beautiful corner room full of windows that let in a lot of natural light with wonderful views of the harbor. Ilwaco is a small marina with mainly offshore fishing charters so don’t be surprised when you hear a few starting up to motor out. The bed was luxurious, we left the windows cracked for the ocean air. Breakfast was served promptly in room and perfectly delicious. Waterline Pub in house has a fabulous menu and outdoor seating with a fire pit, we enjoyed the seasonal offerings. This is an adults only hotel so keep that in mind when booking.

We stopped in to have lunch while at the Saturday Market. We got there when they were opening and had to wait a few minutes on the patio to get service and that was fine. The waitress was very sweet. My sister is gluten intolerant so she was asking about substitutions to a dish or two but we were told the chef prefers to keep his dishes by the recipe so she opted not to eat which was unfortunate. The food was really good but it did take over an hour to get it. This is the second time we've been there and it does take time to get your food so be prepared for that. Sitting on the patio is nice because you can people watch and have a cocktail while you wait. I've never stayed in the rooms yet but we were in town for our brothers wedding and they stayed there so they must like the rooms. I did hear they didn't get there breakfast in the morning as they expected not sure why.

If you want a low key yet beautiful and accommodating hotel, this is the place to be! Beautiful woodwork all throughout. Beds are extremely comfortable. Sauna and hot tub are cedar and so relaxing! We spent a whole week there and had the hotel to ourselves! No other guests. It was quiet and peaceful. The owner comes in every morning and makes a delicious breakfast. The restaurant on the ground floor has delicious food and drinks. The hotel has a no kids policy. It is quiet and clean. The towels are nice and thick. The showers are awesome. 10 out of 10 we will stay here again!
Amber M — Google review
My husband and I stayed here over the weekend and overall had a decent experience, though the first night was a bit rough. We stayed in the Prowler room. Pros: -Smooth check-in and check-out -Noon check-out time (love it!) -Great showers with plenty of towels in hotel room -Complimentary breakfast delivered to your door -Room had TV and decent Wi-Fi Cons: -No lock on the bathroom door, and had a door stop because it doesn't stay open on its own -Only one physical room key (even for 2 guests) -Broken window that wouldn’t close -One bedside lamp was out -No peep hole on the door -Fireplace had no oil -Noise from the downstairs kitchen carried through vents after quiet hours (especially frustrating when trying to sleep) The restaurant downstairs had a friendly atmosphere. We were also given a complimentary cider, wine, or beer for being hotel guests. We were seated quickly Friday night and food came out fast, though we had to wait quite awhile for silverware. Staff were very apologetic though. The grown-up mac and cheese was okay, just very oily. Staff seemed overwhelmed when a large group arrived, and wanted to be seated and served outside due to the inside being full. We later overheard some tense arguments from the kitchen staff about it around 11pm (Workers yelling at each other about not feeling appreciated and wanting to walk out during dinner service). The hotel desk workers should not be wait staff as well. It seems to make it difficult for them to be fully attentive to hotel guests and customers of the restaurant. In the morning expect noise around 4am from people going fishing. We had our window open for fresh air and it got pretty loud. The next morning (Saturday) was not as loud....or I was so exhausted I slept through the noise. The kitchen noise wasn't as bad Saturday night and it stopped around quiet hours luckily. It’s a charming spot with potential, but be prepared for a few quirks and noise depending on the night. It's a laid back hotel/pub restaurant. Not a 5 star hotel in my opinion.
Hanna — Google review
This is a rustic and comfortable hotel. Located across from the Illwaco harbor. We had a large room with a very comfortable bed. A full breakfast is delivered to your room. There's a bar and restaurant on the first floor, good food and an extensive drink menu. We enjoyed our relaxing stay - the hostess was very helpful.
Wayne O — Google review
I recently stayed at At the Helm hotel and have reached out to management about my concerns but have not received any response. At check-in, we were told the windows in our room were damaged and could potentially fall off if used, which made the room feel unsafe. The hotel is advertised as child-free, yet that evening there were children in the upstairs viewing area who were able to see directly into our room. Guests should also be informed that while children may not stay overnight, they are still allowed on the campus. I was in my nightgown at the time and felt very uncomfortable due to the lack of privacy. Guests should definitely be informed if their room is visible from the outlook area so they can take precautions. We also specified no meat at check-in, but were served a breakfast containing meat. It seems dietary preferences aren’t always communicated to the kitchen. Additionally, the room lacked teas and fresh cream as advertised on the website, which was a letdown. To add to the inconvenience, we received a phone call after 10 p.m. with the entrance code because it wasn’t provided during check-in. Receiving such important information so late was frustrating. These issues affected the overall quality of our stay. I hope the management will take these concerns seriously to improve future guests’ experiences.
Julia S — Google review
Unfortunately, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I've had, despite some redeeming qualities. The front desk staff were kind and courteous, but they were clearly overwhelmed; they were also responsible for serving as bar staff, which left them stretched thin during busy periods. Our room, which was guaranteed for a 4:00 p.m. check in, wasn’t ready until nearly an hour later. That delay set the tone for a frustrating stay. Throughout the night, we were repeatedly disturbed by people walking the hallways and even trying our door handle, possibly mistaking our room for another. It was unsettling and disruptive. The noise from the room above us was relentless; it sounded like heavy boots stomping around almost hourly, including at 4 a.m. Presumably, this was from guests preparing for early fishing trips, which is understandable, but the lack of insulation made it impossible to sleep. The toilet and plumbing noise from the room above us was shockingly loud, waking us every time it flushed, which was often. To top it off, the TV didn’t work at all. Even after following the provided instructions for navigating the "no connection" screen, nothing fixed it. Between the late check in, the hallway disturbances, the noise from above, and the unworkable TV, it ended up being a completely sleepless night. We were really looking forward to this trip but left feeling exhausted and disappointed. I would recommend staying elsewhere unless significant changes are made.

If you're in the Long Beach vicinity, I highly suggest checking out Serious Pizza for all your pizza cravings. The proprietor was serving us during our visit and was incredibly pleasant with our family. He informed us that they use the freshest ingredients available, which is evident in every delectable bite. Even my finicky 6-year-old son proclaimed it to be the best cheese pizza he's ever tasted!
We ordered 3 Family size pizzas and they were all delicious! The Italian was my favorite (it’s my go-to at any pizza place). The employees were busting their butts with non-stop to-go orders but took the time to be super friendly and customer service oriented. The crust is perfect for this style of pizza and I wish we had this place in Issaquah! Also, love the 80’s theme-:)
LiveLocalPNW — Google review
It has been a while since I have eaten here and the last time was awesome. High prices even then, but still good. Tonight, not so much. The calzone I ordered was burnt and extremely dry. It was supposed to be a 3 cheese calzone and only had ricotta in it, at least what I could see and taste. The dryness of the inside was like paste in your mouth. Very few ingredients were put in the inside. When I pay over $15 for a calzone, that's not a very big one mind you, I expect it to have more than just a few pieces of candaian bacon and mushrooms. I mean, come on. We are on the precipice of a Medieval, secular economy, meaning the common folk be broke and we are about to start foraging for food. Prices are too expensive as it is and when I want to take a night off from cooking, it sucks to pay so much for way less than par food. Sadly, I will not be coming back to this place. And of course, I ate what I could before waving the white flag because I'm hungry and spent the money on it. I'll just make my own from now on, screw that misery.

As someone that also owns a business I do not want to poop on their rating. This is more my experience and it can be used anyway it needs to be. My experience at Serious Pizza was pretty serious. The person making the pizza was having a time. It was obvious. So you have to let that go a bit. That said the main issue for me is there is no way this pizza was made Neapolitan style. In no way am I the pizza king but no. It literally felt like pizza from the airport. Also and this not uncommon but again my experience. Why do so many pizza places offer a small (8") pizza that is almost always made and tastes different than when a regular size is made. Again this is not uncommon but it comes across as not being on it. Also stuffed a 25% tip in the jar and not even a grunt. This was before the pizza was delivered and was done because I felt bad for them.

3/6/22 Delicious Salad and Pizza! I forgot the name of the pizza but it had amazing chicken sausage on it. I had planned on taking a photo but we devoured the pizza too quickly. I did get a picture of my delicious arugula, pear salad. The greens were so fresh and crisp, the dressing was very light. It was wonderful. Probably the best arugula salad I’ve ever had! When I arrived, I didn’t even need to call. I was a little early for my pick-up so I had planned on sitting in the car for a little while. A very nice man promptly came out to greet me and let me know that the pizza was running true to pick up time. He offered their special crushed red pepper flakes and told me about the process of making them. He told me about the quality of the sausage they use for the pizza as well. It was all simple and pleasant. I had to try to it see if it was truly as good as my friend kept saying it was. It was fantastic. The crust was divine. Not a single morsel went to waste.

The pizza here is absolutely fantastic. The staff are extremely friendly, and the owner walked around ensuring that everyone's food was to satisfaction, even going so far as to refill drinks. The decor is classy and the open atmosphere comfortable. There is also a nice, partially-enclosed outdoor seating area. A bit of a wait is always expected when grabbing made-to-order brick oven pizza, so the 20 minutes we waited wasn't too bad. The prices are about average for the area, but expect close to $25 for a more artisan 15" pizza. The clam chowder is also good, but note that it's made with whole clams, shells and all. The dining area and restrooms were kept clean, which is always an appreciated touch. Overall, we would gladly eat here again and recommend Serious Pizza to almost anyone.

Due to other peoples rating we decided to try their Hawaiian pizza. Unfortunately the crust had absolutely no taste and the top was a little burnt. Tasted worse than cardboard pizza. Won't be ordering here anymore .

The pizza here is delicious! We ate before I could even take a photo (see the half eaten cheese bread). The pizza is super thin crust, and you can only order small or large, but I would definitely recommend stopping here. They also have a dog friendly patio!
