Park
Nature & Wildlife Areas
La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park is a stunning eco park in Costa Rica, featuring five cascades and a wildlife sanctuary with jungle cats and monkeys. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails through the lush surroundings and encounter various animals like toucans, red macaws, butterflies, and even a tapir. The park offers beautiful scenic views but requires proper footwear for walking and some physical effort due to the extensive trails and stairs leading to the five waterfalls.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens blew us away! We did not have this on our original itinerary but decided to go the day prior to leaving CR and was so glad we were able to fit it into. It was truly one of the top highlights of our entire trip. The entire staff there is so pleasant and helpful. We got up close with vibrant toucans, playful monkeys, and even saw big cats like jaguars —all in a beautiful, well-maintained sanctuary. The trails through the forest were lush and peaceful, leading to five absolutely stunning waterfalls. Each one had its own charm, and the views were incredible. Be ready for stairs, but it’s so worth it. This is a must-visit day trip from San José! Arrive early, wear good shoes, and don’t miss the buffet lunch—it’s surprisingly good!

The gardens are beautiful with a ton of varieties. Stairs and pathways are very manageable. The sanctuary has a good variety of animals, native to Costa Rica, felines, fox, sloths and monkeys. All 3 varieties of toucans native to Costa Rica are there also. Butterfly garden is beautiful and informative. Reptile building has a huge variety of snakes. The grounds are very easy to walk around.

It's sad to see the animals in their "cages". When I visited, they were mostly sleeping. I hope they get enough stimulation in their environments, but it didn't seem so. There was a good variety of animals to see. My favorite part was the waterfalls. I wish there was a trail to get to them that was more rustic, not just walking on paved road and stairs, but I guess their audience requires this easier access. The buffet was quite limited for the price.

We accidently found this park. We were leaving the volcano and desperately needed a bathroom so we stopped here. Best accident ever!! We ended up buying tickets and we're absolutely blown away by this park! It is massive and well maintained. Trails everywhere. One of the best things we did in Costa Rica.

I recommend to visit the lapaz garden when you finish your trip in costa rica. It is the opportunity to see the animals you didn t spot in the wildlife...for me i saw toucan birds and jaguar that i didn t see in the national parks...it is not a zoo, the animals you will see are rescued, it is difficult to release them in the wildlife. I enjoyed my visit, it is clean, well oraganized...the buffet is good, the garden is very nice and the waterfall are amazing and not difficult to reach them. Easy level.
Carine A — Google review
La Paz Waterfall Gardens was a mixed experience for me. The waterfalls themselves were absolutely stunning; well worth the visit for their beauty alone. However, I was a bit disappointed that the animals were not in their natural habitat. It felt more like walking through a zoo than experiencing a true nature park. If your main goal is to see the waterfalls, you’ll enjoy it, but if you’re hoping for a completely wild and natural experience, it may not meet your expectations.

You really have to want to go here to get here but if you like hummingbirds or waterfalls or butterflies, you want to go here. We have been here multiple times, this was our first visit during rainy season. Go during rainy season if you get the chance, it really makes the place feel totally different and in a very authentic rain forest, jungle way. By the way, buy the lunch option, they have a great buffet.
Bruce C — Google review
Amazing park to spend the day walking through the animal exhibits and taking the waterfall trails. They have a big variety of birds, butterflies, reptiles, a few monkeys, ocelot, puma and jaguar. All rescued from different situations and none taken from the wild. The food at the restaurants is good. The waterfall trails are in good shape and take you very close to the waterfalls. The price as a tourist is quite high in comparison to what you pay to enter a park in Canada but I would say worth the money regardless.

(Translated by Google) Excellent place for a short walk, with trails near the river and a variety of species of mushrooms and flora, we did not have the pleasure of seeing a Quetzal, however, it was a very nice experience, highly recommended. **actual review of reserve below** When you follow the signs to the car park (4*4 advisable), make sure you follow the track on foot over the rickety Bridge and down to the right of the house, where there is the map and box of sticks are under a shelter. When we arrived there were no people around, only four large Barking Rottweilers... And two confused looking cows. No signs from carpark until at the shelter, this threw us the first time but glad we pushed on. As a family of four with a 4-year-old and an 8 year old this was the perfect distance and level of challenge. You do need sturdy shoes (and water proof as there's a stream) but once you're in the reserve the signposts are very clear. We saw monkeys in the trees and amazing crickets disguised as leafs. We turned back after the waterfalls as the kids were tired but really enjoyed this quasi rainforest.

(Translated by Google) Getting to the reserve is easily possible by car, an SUV is not necessary and parking spaces are available. Entry costs $10 per person, card payment is not possible. The trail is about 2 KM long, which takes about 2 hours (if you walk at a leisurely pace). Sturdy shoes are required as the wet floor is sometimes quite slippery, otherwise there are a few steps up and down, but it's quite easy to walk. Unfortunately we didn't see anything other than a few small birds, but it was still pretty nice.

(Translated by Google) You can call to reserve. The trails are beautiful, full of water and life! It is NOT a tour, it is a self-guided walk using the signs. It is advisable to arrive early or at night if you are adventurous to try to see tapirs. We got lost halfway through and we didn't get to the church, but we also had little light. Hey, the entrance costs 5 thousand colones.

(Translated by Google) Nice experience. The trail, which is well signposted and easy to navigate, is short, about 3 km, but they are going to extend it another 2 km. Very well taken care of by Jackeline. Recommended (Original) Bonita experiencia. (Translated by Google) As for arriving at the reserve, it is a very large and quite steep hill, it is recommended to go in a high car or at least 4x2, since to enter the cendero you have to pass a part that is loose rock and stone of river, it is not much, but it is better to avoid. As for the trails, they are beautiful and you walk a lot along the river bank, the bad thing is that they are not very well maintained and very slippery since it is very humid, with many steps that are quite large and a little complicated, if you don't get to the chapel and take the exit I recommend you go with a lot of patience since the way down is HORRIBLE. That would be my experience. Greetings...... Saludos......

Families can savor delicious meals, from a phenomenal chicken rice dish to perfectly seasoned steak, all complemented by refreshing drinks. We were trying to grab lunch before heading into La Paz waterfall park, what a great surprise here. Great food, nice staff

Great place with wonderful food and ambience. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The quality of salads and fresh produce is amazing. Definitely recommend to try their strawberry smoothie. They make it from fresh local strawberry and it is to die for. My son loved their kids pizza and we enjoyed a variety of traditional Costa Rican dishes all of them really yummy.

My family had dinner and breakfast the next morning at the restaurant and it was all so delicious! The drinks were yummy, the chicken rice dish was phenomenal, and the steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The breakfast was amazing. They have a goat cheese they make that is the perfect complement to the eggs, rice, beans, and ham. All this is experienced with the mountains and jungle right outside the window.

Excellent Costa Rican, and a lovely manager who was happy to speak English or let us try our limited Spanish. Good recommendations made from the menu and we all enjoyed our meals. Very welcoming, we'll visit again if we are back in the area in the future 🤩

After seeing so many strawberry stands on our way to La Paz waterfall I was feeling serious fomo. I mean, strawberries grown in that volcanic soil, oh my~ When we saw Tipico de Vara Blanca we finally gave in and stopped for a quick jugo de fresa. The waitress did her best to understand our limited Spanish and the restaurant as well as the bathrooms were very clean and welcoming. Bonus points for the cool garden sculptures!
