Sights & Landmarks
Castles
The Queen's Palace is a historic landmark that was used as the residence of Imerina and Madagascar rulers during the 17th to 19th centuries. It provides breathtaking views of Tana, especially during sunset. Visitors can take a guided one-hour tour of various palaces in the complex, including the church and memorials. The palace's ship-like construction style is an interesting sight to behold.
20,000 Ariary for the entrance and a must visit if you come to Antananarivo to understand the History of the Queen and the Colonization of Madagascar by the French, very impressive and must visit
Abdullah B — Google review
Worth the visit. The building it self tells a story. The exhibits are few and simple. The information in films and digital exhibits tells very simplistic and selective history of Madagascar all the way to its Independence, but is a good introduction for those no familiar with the the last three centuries of Monarchy, Colonial Times, and the struggle for independence of this fascinating Island. The site offers one of the best views of Antananarivo.
Vicente S — Google review
Beautiful palace and place to learn about Malagasy history. However it is a pity that they burned it some years ago so most of the place is renovated. Small museum inside about kings, queens, Madagascar and some nice items. Amazing view from top of Antananarivo as it is at the highest point of the city.
Miguel S — Google review
Very nice place to visit, certainly to recommend! Everything described in malgasy, french and English. A guide is good to give you some more background to the things, but not really necessary.
Roland G — Google review
Quite a nice view. And a 20000 entry fee for a short visit is fair enough. A short visit is plenty of time to walk around the recreation of the historic buildings. There are some interesting historic artifacts inside some but there's not much left of original architecture after the fire in 1995. You may find a tour guide helpful if you want a longer tour. Beware. No photos allowed inside buildings- dunno why they don't want people sharing the interesting stuff but whatever.
Remer J — Google review
It was exceptional. I went in 2019 before the renovations, and it was alright. Now, since the renovations, it is SO much better. It's like a museum inside, and the guide was a huge help. Very knowledgeable, and the history of Madagascar really comes together. I recommend going with the two hour tour, because there's so much to see. It's too bad they don't let you take pictures inside, because there is some really beautiful stuff. Although, if we were allowed to take pictures, it would have taken 4 hours.lol
Rubel S — Google review
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this palace. It costed inr 360 rupees. The guide was too good with his explanation about the displays. The views are great as you can see. Worth visiting.
Ganesh S — Google review
Be careful of non official tour guides! I can say that museum is one of the highlights of Antananarivo. It shows and gives you more closer picture about political situation in Madagascar. Photos from some reason are not allowed inside of museum. It is easy to visit as it is walking distance from downtown, but you have to go up hill. It was rebuild after the fire, so many things are replica. Entrance is 20 K for two hours visit. Watch out of non official tour guides as we got scammed at the end. We had a tour from 3-5 pm ( at the end of the opening hours) so it was not crowded. Our guide finished a tour in a back yard where his friend join us and they asked 50 euros for a tips. Friendly guide at the beginning of our visit turn out in very unpleasant guy. We gave him 30k (10k was to cover his ticket - locals have reduced price) and we managed to leave the site but we felt unsafe on our way back to hotel as we knew he had a another friend at the entrance of the gate which we met at the first place. Luckily we came to hotel without any issue but that incident left bitter taste of Antananarivo.

Specialty Museums
The Madagascar Photography Museum in Antananarivo is a must-visit for photography enthusiasts and history lovers. It showcases a remarkable collection of photographs depicting the rich history of Madagascar, from pre-colonial times to independence, as well as daily life scenes and city landmarks. The museum also offers six short documentaries about the country's cultural heritage, presented in three languages. Visitors can explore various themed photo exhibits and enjoy a temporary photo exposition in the garden focused on environmental conservation.
One of the best Museums in Madagaskar.... interesting, creative, Inspiration, wonderful Green garden , great Atmosphäre. A must for echt visitors! And a must for each madagassy!!!! Go!!

It talks about water purity and transparency, the essential qualities of perfect water, and It is dedicated to preserving Madagascar's photographic heritage and aims to encourage Malagasy people to embrace their history. The museum features exhibitions of vintage photographs as well as themed video screenings The gardens of the Museum of Photography offer spectacular views of the city of Antananarivo. There was a guide, she was very helpful and very explicit. Hats off
Michael K — Google review
Lonely planet defines it as the best Museum in town. Probably exaggerated, but a wonderful spot with great views and old architecture, plus some content to understand the history of this country. But is just a small villa, with two rooms for exhibition and three for projections
Giulio T — Google review
Small but interesting museum with many videos explaining both the history of Malagasy photography and the temporary exhibition. On the top floor, the exhibition in well designed. I would have liked to have also a permanent space with old photos of Antananarivo and other main cities. Great view of Antananarivo from the top floor.

Changing photographic exhibitions with permanent documentary films about Madagascar in a two floor very interesting building worth visiting.
Vicente S — Google review
They have six short documentaries about Madagascar and its cultural heritage, made up of historic photographs in 3 languages. In addition, there's also a number of photographs on display on the walls with explanations. A small souvenir shop (beautiful postcards!), a temporary photo exposition in the garden (environment conservation) and a lovely garden restaurant. Great views from the hilltop. Overall worth a visit.

Arboretum
Tsimbazaza Zoo and Botanical Gardens, established in 1990, is a combined zoo and garden that features a museum showcasing tribal carvings and skeletons. It is an enjoyable destination for those who wish to view animals and the diverse flora of Madagascar without leaving Tana. The zoo houses over 14 lemur species within its premises, which are enclosed. Visitors may choose to roam independently or hire a guide like Bruno, who is knowledgeable about the zoo's offerings.
Great place to know Madagascar in Miniature. They have many local Animal. Although unfortunately I wonder why They don't have FUZA. It's so many in Madagascar but they can't capture a couple for Tourists see from close range. The Zoo Keeper can make the Eagle and the Lemur making noise . Even greeting us. Very funny.

This is a combination of a zoo and a botanical garden. I wouldn't say it's the best place I've ever visited, but if you're already in Antananarivo and want to see some interesting animal and plant species, it's worth a visit. The entrance fee is affordable, but it's important to note that the animals are kept in very small and enclosed spaces. However, if you're looking to take a walk and enjoy beautiful plant species and a scenic lake, you might find this place quite enjoyable.
Ivan L — Google review
All zoo's are meant to be education centres for wildlife viewers and Tsimbazaza zoo although poorly maintained does give visitors a close up view of Lemurs and a few other birds and reptiles. Before visiting a National park a visit to this zoo is beneficial. The zoo has a excellent " Natural History Museum " next to it that has original fossils and skeletons of extinct Madagascar species.
Rudolph F — Google review
Zoo is so small , please support zoo & any one can buy animals and support by adding to zoo or visit
Wael M — Google review
Very dilapidated place, with some very unhappy animals. The level of care is way too low. Also the rubbish and plastic waste is obscene! It's apparent that the team have no incentive or will to care for the animals or the gardens.
Tim M — Google review
Unfortunately, quite poor garden, suffering animals in unsufficient conditions, mess and rubbish all over the garden, damaged plants and trees (marked and scratched by visitors), many empty spaces, dead animals (I saw 1 bird and 1 chameleon). Well, don't expect standards like in developed countries. Artificially created biotopes have a nice idea, but the reality will bring disappointment..
Martin N — Google review
The best about it the guide, check out Bruno he's fun, informative and passionate. The zoo is small but had over 14 types of lemurs. This is a caged zoo, but a good place to start learning about what to expect.
Kamal K — Google review
It's a fun place if you don't want to get out to one of the national parks or reserves and just see some animals and the variety of plants Madagascar has right here in Tana! Locals basically go in for free, we opted not to have a guide and just roamed around on our own. We had a fun time on their manual ferris-wheel... it was a person jumping on it and pulling it down by force, so fun!

Lisy Art Gallery is not your average art gallery. It showcases a wide array of handcrafted items from local artisans in Madagascar, including paintings, wood carvings, woven mats, shopping bags, decorative boxes, and specially designed containers.
Spoilt for choice in all things to remember Madagascar with. From baskets, to aluminum, zebu horn to wood, stone trinkets … they’ve got it all … even the foodstuff vanilla, baobab. I left with a lot of things and the prices were decent. Highly recommended!!!
Aisha H — Google review
This is more of a tourist shop where you can buy handicrafts of Madagascar, vanilla and other delicacies of the island. Nothing special, plus I found the vanilla and vanilla products too pricey. It's for sure, not a gallery. I would go again but I would buy my vanilla sticks from real groceries or open markets.
Marios T — Google review
Many souvenirs and hand craft could be found here with good quality and price. I bought many things here at the end of my trip and observations of many shops all around Madagascar. No need to negotiate about the price.
Sadegh T — Google review
Probably the best souvenir shop in Tana. Love it!
Amber S — Google review
Big variety of crafted items. All priced and credit cards welcome. No doubt it is cheaper buying in the market but it’s a nice environment and they also support people in rural areas from where they obtain their wares.
Marita K — Google review
All you need to buy in Madagascar & next door there is a spice shop/ rum/ fresh Vanilla pods. Very friendly n helpful staffs. We ordered a taxi a whole day to wait for us.
Irene D — Google review
Nice shop that sells beautiful handicraft to good prices. They also had fresh vanilla! The place to go for all your souvenirs and gifts.
Noemi S — Google review
Very diverse and good quality gift shop ranging from raphia products (table mats, baskets, bags, boxes etc), through T-shirts (Carambole and Maki brands I guess) and zebu horn products to woodwork, paintings and some metal decoration items. There is even a food section so they practically have everything you might consider as "Malagasy handicraft".

Cute café in the garden of the museum. Amazing views from the hill. Extremely nice staff, speaking English. Lovely deserts, there was a piano player. Prices a little high but all meals looked extravagant and worth it. There's a vegetarian menu but nothing sounded like a full meal. Had the gnocchi starter with blue cheese sauce which was super tasty but small (a starter). Guests smoke outside which is a little annoying but seems normal in Tana.

Lemur Park is a tranquil botanical garden that features a lemur habitat and offers guided tours, a restaurant, and a gift shop. Many of its lemurs were once pets and are accustomed to humans but still maintain their distance. The park provides ample opportunities for visitors to capture remarkable photographs of these curious animals while they freely move about the grounds. It is recommended that visitors arrive early in the morning when the park opens at 9 am for an optimal experience.
Amazing park with very good guide. You can see a lot of different species of lemurs, Baobab tree, trutles, bamboo, national tree of Madagascar, also their restaurant is so good especially the coffee with the condensed milk and the caramelized banana and also the gift shop have a lot to offer for reasonable prices

One of my favourite animal experiences ever! Jonathan was very insightful and a knowledgeable guide. We saw so many different types of lemurs and the biodiversity is incredible. Would definitely recommend! It was cash only when we were there so be prepared to not have any phone service or ability to pay with card.

Our first day I Madagascar and we wanted to take it easy. This was a perfect place to start. Lovely reserve, well kept with great flora and lemurs in the wild. Our guide was very knowledgeable, not just about Lemurs, and everyone was outstandingly friendly. Very big portions of tasty food too and a nice gift shop.

Paradise and Hell + Beautiful, well-maintained park with 8 different species of lemurs. Competent and friendly staff, and the guides speak English. There is a café and a souvenir shop. - The road is HELL! From Novotel (29 km away) it took us 2.5 hours one way, a total of 5 hours on the road because of traffic jams.
Akiria A — Google review
I think if you come to Madagascar / Antanarivo you really should consider coming to this privately owned park where the mission is to look after lemurs (often relinquished from private owners). The lemurs here are quite habituated to people and can be viewed up close without a cage. In the wild they can be considerably more elusive. The guides are knowledgeable and conduct tours at your pace. It's a bit out of town, but spend the time, take on the fresh air and make a day trip. There is a deck with a restaurant and drinks
Melvyn K — Google review

Before coming here, I had already seen some animals in several nature reserves, but this place was still very enjoyable. The bustling Analakely Market in Antananarivo is a must-visit for both locals and tourists. This vibrant market offers a wide range of everyday essentials such as meats, vegetables, fish, fruits, and spices. Visitors can also explore the market's colorful stalls to find an array of curios, souvenirs, textiles, and trinkets at affordable prices.
Amazing, authentic African market. The sights, sounds, and scents are a feast for the senses. I had a local guide with me who helped to engage with the vendors and offer insights and history of the culture. Everything and anything is sold here...fruits, vegetables, meats, grains, clothes, toys, housewares, souvenirs, etc... No trip to Mada is complete without exploring this market. Pickpockets are part of the adventure - keep your head on a swivel, have someone watch your back, don't bring visible valuables. Check out Erik The Adventure Nerd on YouTube.

Fun African and authentic experience. The market stretch for many blocks and in many different directions. Most vendors do not act aggressively or harass passerby but appreciate and warmly welcome you when you shop or view their shop. Very good. “European restaurant” is not fair, since there is a fusion with local food. The duck with Foie grass was pretty local, as ingredient and interpretation (in a positive way). The relaxed atmosphere around the pool is also great.
Giulio T — Google review
We ate on the first floor restaurant. Nice and cosy. Extensive menu plus specials on the blackboard. Service was excellent, portions generous and extremely tasty. Two courses for 2 people plus water and 3 cocktails came to £23. Only complaint was that I had no room for pudding! If we had more time we’d definitely be back.
Louise R — Google review
The food was really good, but for a restaurant of this reputation the waiters need to learn that the clients are paying customers and not their enemies. Our waiter Alberto was fine and did a good job. But the lady in the bar short hair and glasses. Was incredible rude. I made an allergic reaction to spice and began sneezing uncontrollably, I used the napkin provided by the restaurant. The lady arrived after the factory with paper napkins and yelled at me for sneezing on the other napkin, as if I was a clairvoyant knowing I was going to sneeze. After we told her the irrationality of her argument, she went to their colleagues and mock me by sizing a few times over the dinner. I have never seen that on a restaurant before. Really left us an extremely bad memory of what at that point a good evening.

Loved their food! I was not ready for the experience as I was thinking of a more casual dine. However, tried their duck and the thin layer of fat was perfectly cooked which is mostly rare in restaurants.

Amazing place! Really good exceptional food at very low prices (for foreigners at least) in a very colonial and classy atmosphere. Very friendly and attentive staff. A very good experience overall

Had an awesome dinner. The trio of fish carpaccio is amazing. The service is excellent.

I’ve eaten well all over the world (highlights: Bogota and Tbilisi) but this place put Tana squarely on the map for me! Delicious Magret de Canard the last time I was here, then tonight the tuna and calamari was sublime!
Kevin P — Google review
We had diner at this restaurant after trying Varangue and Kudeta, hoping it's pretty close to the others. It was a disappointment though. We had the meron with cheese and lasagna. The meron was old and oily, with a pregnant fish smell and the lasagna was below average, basically tasteless. Besides this, when asking to pay with credit card they insisted a lot of times that they charge an extra 5% for cc fees, something the other restaurants don't charge. Also the prices are pretty much the same as the other 2 restaurants, but the quality is not even close. Besides all this we both were pretty ill after this dining experience, but i can't say for sure it was the food.

The atmosphere is great, feels like old, food quality is great, their specialty is the Soufflé, it is really awesome

Great food. Tartare de poisson is excellent (better than the competition), chocolate mousse amazing, great maigret de canard, shrimps and fries. Four stars because I've had better carpaccio and steak in Tana, ... will come back. Service was great too. Good job!

Nestled in the heart of Antananarivo, Sakamanga Hôtel is a vibrant boutique hotel that perfectly blends style and comfort. Guests can unwind in chic rooms while enjoying access to a luxurious spa and an inviting courtyard pool. With three delightful restaurants on-site, there's no shortage of culinary options to explore. The hotel boasts free WiFi, ensuring you stay connected during your travels, along with reliable hot water for those refreshing showers after a day of adventure.
This hotel has a lot of character, very practical rooms, big and includes everything needed. Excellent breakfast and dinner. It is worth spending time watching the exhibition of the historical artifacts on the walls (although an explanation in English would help). Very good hotel in the middle of Tana.

Hotel in the very center of the city. Took 40min to reach the airport on a Sunday. Paid 55 000, while hotel would charge 80 000 (unless you can share). Interior design is gorgeous. Haven't slept in such a good bed since a long time in my trip in Mada, would have loved to stay longer than a night. Loved the little soaps available in the shower. Buffet breakfast for 35 000 Ar, but there's also a delicious bakery next door. The rooms are by the pool but are actually super quiet at night, no noise of people having dinner or drinks right in front!
Sibarita D — Google review
I have stayed in Sakamanga 3 times until now and I would totally recommend it both for accomodation and for it's breakfast and dinner options. First of all walking around is like visiting a museum of Malagasy history and an art exhibition. The open buffet breakfast is worth the price they charge (around 7 euros) as it offers a variety of local and international savory and sweet options. They even prepare omelette on demand and the pool garden is a very relaxing are to have breakfast. There is an in house restaurant also offering local and international cuisine as well as daily specials. The hotel offers different room categories, smaller and low budget as well as bigger, artistically decorated ones. Internet WiFi connection is quite good for Madagascar standards, What'sApp video calls are supported with decent quality. Most important the personel there welcomes you makes you feel like home. Almost everyone speaks good English and those you don't still find a way to provide the best service. The third time I stayed was during the political unrest and demonstrations of September 2025. Due to that I had to change my schedule repeatedly. The Sakamanga team made me feel like home, feeling safe and comfortable despite traveling alone, renewing my room upon last minute request due to special circumstances. Even the maids were discreet since I had to work remotely from my room and politely adjusted the cleaning schedule to allow me having my meetings. There is a pharmacy right next door, a bakery, supermarkets 10-12 min walk, ATM near by and taxi area in the next corner.
Evangelia C — Google review
We had a suite with AC and it was excellent to have a full seating area in air conditioning, to be able to work on the computer and not get bugged by the bugs. We thought that since we had the room shut up since early afternoon, we didn't have to worry about mosquitoes, so didn't use the provided net. Big mistake. I got the most bites overnight that I've had in our whole 3 week stay in the country. The restaurant was overly warm with little air movement, but the food and service were stellar, for dinner. Breakfast was a haphazard affair, as it is usually a buffet around the pool, but this had to be moved inside, due to morning rain. Service was good everywhere, but especially friendly and fast for a late lunch around the pool. Even though there were demonstrations nearby, we didn't hear anything, nor felt unsafe, as we were nicely tucked away from the street.
Lisa J — Google review
This hotel has a unique atmosphere and an authentic feel about it however it was somewhat confusing to find your way around. The room was small with flying mosquitos everywhere. Yes there is a protecting net over the bed and a ceiling fan. Breakfast and dinner were good. The location is in a very busy street with lots of traffic, but you cannot hear this in your room.
Gil L — Google review
Very mixed feelings about this hotel. I booked a room for €45 for one night. The bed was comfortable, with thick blankets and good pillows, and I appreciated the mosquito net. However, the room had a strong smell of humidity, which was unpleasant. That said, the water pressure was good, and there was hot water. One major downside: around 6:30 AM, there was a lot of noise and vibrations in my room, possibly from a pump or machinery above. It made it impossible to sleep in, which was really annoying. The breakfast was delicious and, in my opinion, worth the price. You can enjoy it by the pool, which creates a cosy atmosphere. However, the pool itself isn’t really usable, it seems more decorative. There are no lounge chairs, and since the restaurant terrace surrounds it, you don’t really can or even want to swim or relax by the pool. I had a great massage — the masseuse was kind and professional. The only downside was that the massage room is located next to the stairs, so you can hear people walking and talking, which disrupted the experience. Finally, they didn’t accept Mastercard, only Visa or cash. You really don’t want to be forced to withdraw cash on your last day in the country, which was my situation. The woman at reception, with whom I arranged the payment, was not friendly and quite rude. That’s not how guests should be treated. Thankfully, the rest of the staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, I have stayed at better hotels in Tana and will not return.
Steffi D — Google review
You really do get what you pay for this hotel. It was truly deluxe room and we totally enjoyed our stay. The restaurant service left something to be desired but the pool service was good. All around recommended for the ambiance and beautiful antiques throughout the hotel.

L'Arrivage is a delightful eatery that offers delicious cuisine and excellent service. The delectable dishes are skillfully prepared, with the fish and zebu cooked to perfection. The chocolate dessert is simply superb. This charming spot provides warm hospitality, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all guests. The food is not only tasty but also beautifully presented. Don't miss out on trying their homemade Rhum, which is absolutely flawless.
We had several wonderful meals at L'Arrivage during our stay in Tana. The food & drink are delicious, the staff both friendly and professional and the ambiance is lovely. Yves, the manager, is a delightful host who will make sure your visit exceeds expectations. One of our party was sad to leave any sauce at all and debated licking his plate. Thankfully, he came to the right conclusion as he wasn't keen on getting a "terrible guest" review and being banned from returning.

Ate there twice while staying at the Hotel Palisandre. Greatly enjoyed the delicious fresh seafood. The host makes a special effort to make you feel welcome. Yves even helped us get in touch with the artist who created pieces for the restaurant.

A lovely restaurant specialising in seafood where they carefully curate their own ingredients. Everything looked and tasted fresh. Great atmosphere and service, and a very knowledgable and inviting owner. We had a great dinner here and the tastes were on point. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone staying in Tana. (Pictures of the shrimp cocktail and fish tartare, also ordered tagliatelle frutti di mare and chouxdessert, but didn't take pictures)

Haute French restaurant
Marais Restaurant Madagascar in Madagascar offers a remarkable dining experience, as it stands out among the few restaurants on the island. The establishment's decor exhibits meticulous planning and attention to detail. The staff is exceptional, providing impeccable service. The cuisine boasts fresh and top-notch ingredients, though some culinary techniques could use improvement. One instance of this is overcooking fish, resulting in a rubbery texture. However, the Chocolat dessert comes highly recommended for its exquisite taste.
Absolutely delicious! All the food was amazing. The place is very luminous. Although the café gourmand is not that great…
Doña E — Google review
Not sure where to start but this restaurant was quiet an experience. It started with the waiter who barely spoke English. I asked if they have a wine pairing to which I receive a reply: No. I asked a few times more because I knew that there is an option( at that moment they only brought us drinks menu, not food menu for some reason) and he declined it a few times more after which I had to ask him to maybe double check it with other colleagues. He did it and ofc there was an option. Wine tasting by itself was strange as wines did not really go along the dishes. We even had a funny moment where 2 of us were served the same wine and because bottle finished, the other 2 received completely different wine without any comment. Food overall is okeish but nothing I would remember or recommend ( we took 6 course menu) All foods were served without comments which we found a bit strange. They bring menu in the end of the meal before the bill but no one told us about it. The woman on the reception was very nice and some of the waiters were also helpful and accommodative. But for prize and food wise I would not recommend it

A truly unexpected surprise during my trip to Madagascar. We chose the chef's tasting menu and it was exquisite! Highly recommend making a reservation and treating yourself to this experience if you're visiting Tana.
Dana A — Google review
A great restaurant located at the top of the building. The chef's choice is a great way to go for the first timers. The wine pairing could be a little better but the last two wines were spot on.
Jeff S — Google review
We had a very enjoyable evening with a surprise chef’s menu and wine pairing. The food was flavorful and clearly prepared by a talented chef. However, we only found out the ingredients and wines after the meal, which we personally found a bit disappointing — we would have preferred to know during the dinner. That said, it’s a matter of taste. While everything was tasty, we felt the price-to-quality ratio didn’t quite match what we’re used to from haute cuisine in Europe. Still, definitely worth a visit — just don’t compare it too strictly to European fine dining.
Annika H — Google review
Truely a wonderful evening to remember. We ordered the 5 course menu with wines and some cocktails. As part of the experience we were given the „surprise“ menu. So we did not know what we actually got to eat. In our opinion the kitchen has its own madagassi take on every dish, which we really loved. The staff was extremely attentive and friendly. If you are into great food and wine the Marais is for you!
Niklas W — Google review
You succumb naturally to the Marais Restaurant experience. Malagasy local products deserved to be served this gastronomic way. A wide range of choice in the meat and sides cooked perfectly. Tender octopus is prepared in a creative way... it's almost lovely to have it displayed in a plate. Wine and dishes in a gastromy style service and It's wonderful to taste Malagasy zebu (beef) with matching grands crus. We especially appreciated the red wine selection and half bottles are available. Herbal tea special are just incredible and the choice among natural juice combination reflects the amazing range of seasonal fruits available on the island. Worth the price and the time to appreciate the meals. Fits to many occasions : a lovely dinner date, a formal business lunch, a pleasant family brunch on a sunday. Seat.. and enjoy !

For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Tana Water Front. Not quite as popular as Analakely Market, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Grand Café de la Gare

Brasserie
Grand Café de la Gare is a charming restaurant located near the central station in downtown Tana. The interior exudes a vintage café ambiance, and the attentive multilingual waitstaff adds to the pleasant dining experience. The menu features delicious local dishes such as Romazava, pork with lacquered onions, and spicy sausages. Guests can enjoy their meals in the lovely garden or indoors, where they may be treated to live piano music on Sundays.
I ordered the zebu, cooked for 10 hours with potatoes, and I must say it was absolutely delicious and packed with flavor. The meat was tender and rich, making each bite a true pleasure. The drinks we tried were also fantastic, complementing our meal perfectly. Each sip was refreshing and well-crafted, enhancing the overall dining experience. However, there was one aspect that could use some improvement: the brownies. Unfortunately, they were quite dry, which was disappointing after such a wonderful meal. A little more moisture or a richer texture would elevate them significantly.

Jasper Y — Google review
Well...I had expectations as I came from the Princess Bora on Sainte Marie. But... It's a nice place, they did a great restauration job and created a good, relaxing atmosphere. The service did a good job, too. But the food disappointed me. The waiter recommended the zebu steak and so I did. The redwine-onion sauce was delicious, but just too less for a sauce lover like me. Half of the steak and it was already gone. I ordered mayonnaise and got remoulade, which is not a bad thing as it was also delicious. But the steak...the meat quality was bad, several tendons and hard in some places, too. The experience of eating a great steak got destroyed, I gave approx a third of the meat to the cat next to me. Very sad as it was my last Dinner before I need to attend my flight back to Europe. And yes, I totally agree to one of the other opinions here: you should add information about possible food allergies on menu. Fifou, the owner, manages several Restaurants/Hotels in Europe, he usually has to know and take care as with the price point here, this restaurant definitely aims to tourists, business people and wealthy Madagassi. So here is big room for development.
T F — Google review
Food quality is good but it's now quite overpriced, service can be slow, waiters don't check on tables often enough. Fruit juices and cocktails are extortionate. I had catch of the day, fries and vegetables and it was all very nice except the tartar sauce which was not good.

Fondation H in Antananarivo, Madagascar is a new addition to the city's art scene, joining the pre-existing Hakanto Contemporary. The foundation is part of the country's efforts to establish a national academy dedicated to arts and culture. Visitors are impressed by the modern exhibition architecture and the display of Madame Zo's artworks, which include woven tapestries made from locally sourced materials like film cassette tape and metal.
Incredible. Sublime. Great space, gorgeous art, extremely helpful, multi lingual team on site. An absolute must visit for anyone living in or visiting Tana. Refreshing. Exhibit perfectly curated. It's simply a pleasure spending time there

World class, this contemporary art museum is a model for how to present art in a contemporary & relevant way. It’s in a beautifully restored historic building, right in the middle of the city, doors open to invite people in. The art is bright, bold & African, well curated but also clearly enjoyed by the stream of young people all enjoying it, posing for photos, chilling in the gardens. The staff are inviting & explain things nicely. I wish more African cities had museums like this!

Restaurant Les Artistes is a charming bistro that offers a delightful selection of snack-style dishes, including sandwiches and entrees, all reasonably priced. While the menu may be limited to just one page, each visit can bring surprises in flavor and presentation. The ambiance transports you to Paris with its cozy vibe, attracting many long-term expats and French tourists who appreciate the culinary offerings. Although the atmosphere could benefit from some updates in decor, the warm service always shines through with friendly smiles.
The food Is great!Every plate Is a Surprise. The service Is really food, ready in Every Moment. The only problem Is the atmposphere,I would reccomend to do a restiring to the furniture because it's a Little in the obscurity.Anither problem Is of the parking. Every day I don't wait to go to eat here!

Going there many times. Food can be excellent or mediocre - depending on cook's mood. Service lovely with a smile. Many long term expats as guests. Ambiance bistrot . But what makes my dinner always a sucess is watching the jealous Birkenstock tourists when I show up there with my well-dressed, young companion. Instead of complaining about it, they should try to understand Madagascar.

Historical place
Rovan' Ambohimanga is a captivating historical site nestled about 24 kilometers northeast of Antananarivo, Madagascar's capital. This centuries-old fortified royal settlement stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Merina people. The hill features well-preserved remnants of precolonial homes and tombs of significant monarchs, making it an essential symbol of Madagascar's past.
A must visit if you are near the capital. UNESCO heritage protected. Traditional kings building next to more modern (18c) queens palace. Still favourite with the followers of the old traditional religion where one wants to talk to ancestors and offer a sacrifice! Amazing experience. The entry gate to the sacred hill is worth a visit too

The summer house has gifts from different countries such as mirrors from Queen Victoria of England, french cristal ware and wallpaper from Japan. The ticket for foreigners costs 10000 and for local costs 400. I recommend visiting the place with a guide as there are not many written explanation. Has nice panoramik view at the top.

A surprisingly simple Palace, in tact from before the French Colonozation and thankfully kept. UNESCO sites are always great. No pics allowed inside buildings

A UNESCO Heritage Site. Comprises a royal city and burial site, and an ensemble of sacred places. The Royal Hill was the burial ground for its sovereigns; built in the 15th century and was set up as a fortified political capital and royal palace during the reign of King Andriantsimitoviaminandriana in the 18th century.

Hardly a Palace as most people would think of it. A collection of a few huts with some basic items inside. Lovely views of the surrounding countryside though. 10,000 Ary entrance fee for foreigners plus 600 Ary for taking photos (outside only)

Tsarasaotra Park, also known as Parc de Tsarasaotra, is a hidden gem located in the industrial zone of Antananarivo. Despite its urban surroundings, this wildlife reserve is a vital sanctuary for endangered bird species such as the Madagascar little grebe, Mellers duck, and Malagasy pond heron. The park's name translates to 'a good place to live,' particularly for birds.
Well worth a visit if you're in Antananarivo.

Vakas Z — Google review
A beautiful park with a lot of birds and wold nature, the big issues are that there are no indicators in park for alleys, and in a portion of the park people build up their houses, so while admiring the nature and birds you can end up on someones property
Ioana I — Google review
Lots of birds including the rare Meller's Duck. Nice little place

Pleasant walk around this park - visit early in the morning or late afternoon and bring a long lens for the many, many birds that live here. The northwest corner of the park has homes, but the rest is an oasis of nature in the middle of a crowded city. You have to buy your ticket in advance (i.e. the day before) but you can show up as early as 6 am and have the whole park to yourself.

Have to pay 5,000 (about $1 or 1€) to enter park but can't go to monument. There's a sign that says 'tsy azo alweha" or "can't walk" and men there guarding it. You can't see it before they charge the entrance though Nothing else to see but there's play and workout equipment if interested.

Hotel Restaurant La Varangue is a tranquil lodging option that showcases a garden-facing eatery and accommodations equipped with complimentary internet access. The dining establishment, known for its refined ambiance and broad wine variety, serves a fusion of French and Malagasy dishes. Housed within a beautifully restored colonial property, the restaurant exudes elegance. In addition to this, it displays an assortment of antiques, including vintage cars. Guests appreciate the delectable cuisine and attentive service provided at this hidden gem.
Outstanding! The Interior of the restaurant is one of the most striking i have ever seen, even outside of Madagascar. The food was great too.
Erik P — Google review
When we checked out of the hotel, we settled our bill. On the way to the airport, we got a call that they hadn’t charged us for dinner and asked us to return. It is impossible to turn around and go back to the hotel and still make it to the airport if you’ve ever been in the city. We offered credit card numbers, we offered them to send us an email with a payment link, we offered to wire. They finally told us they would email us with wiring instructions. We thought it was behind us until we were sitting in the business lounge and two police officers came up to take one of us downstairs. The lady from the hotel had come all the way to the airport to get cash for the bill. It would have meant none of us could have left the country. Complete incompetence on the part of the hotel. Do not recommend coming to the city or to that hotel.
Dani W — Google review
La Varangue was incredibly tranquil right in the heart of Tana. The hotel itself has amazing decor, beautiful rooms, and the sun trap garden is an incredible place to simply rest. The restaurant offers easily the best food we had during our time in Madagascar... Plus there is an excellent doggo! But what really set the hotel apart was the service. It combines luxury service both in the restaurant and hotel, with the classic Malagasy welcome and kindness. For example, our flight was extremely early (0100 arrival at Nosy Be airport for a flight landing in Tana at 0505), and so I'd messaged to ask for an early check-in if possible. La Varangue (in particular Sandra) said they'd do all they could to facilitate. When we pulled in at 0600 (having had an extremely smooth transfer from the airport) we did not even need to step foot in reception as we were greeted by a porter with our room's key and seamlessly taken to our room for some rest. They even made the room up when we went out in the afternoon... And did this all for free! Thanks to Sandra, Stan and the whole team for a wonderful stay!

Enjoyed the antique collection in the hotel with beautiful terrace. However in the rooms we had no water on our last day and the shower dispenser was also empty. Curtains a bit dusty. Food beautifully presented. Recommended to those who want to explore the very busy town, but be aware difficult to get there during the day due to traffic jam. Be aware, staff has limited English so it hinders the service.

Réserve Peyrieras Madagascar Exotic is a tropical zoo renowned for its diverse collection of native animal species. The park is particularly famous for its chameleons, lemurs, and geckos. Visitors can also observe snakes, frogs and other animals housed in cages throughout the park. While some may question the appropriateness of housing these creatures in captivity, it's undeniably fascinating to witness such exotic wildlife up close.
Amazing !! The tour guides are very patient with letting you take all your photos. The lemurs are close walking distance in the woods and they bring them bananas to make them come close to you. There is also a lot of beautiful neon colored frogs, geckos, snakes, and chameleons of all colors and sizes
Giovanna P — Google review
Mixed feelings about this one. Lovely because you have plenty of chameleons, geckos, snakes, frogs, butterflies… But they are locked in places, some of them are there for release (at least we were told that). So beautiful but sad for that.
Miguel S — Google review
They keep and feed lemurs and some reptiles in enclosures here. Which may rub some people the wrong way. I’m generally fine with the concept of zoos especially as a gateway to funnel people to be aware of and to contribute to conservation efforts. Anyway, saw a family of sifakas feeding(and got to feed them myself), and enjoyed a little lecture on the endemic chameleons of Madagascar while getting an up close look. Recommended.
Khidhir A — Google review
Very interesting reptile "zoo". It is not a reserve where you watch animals in the wild, but you get to see a lot of reptiles you can easily miss.
דרור ל — Google review
Ouuuu what a place? One can't miss this place while visiting Madagascar. It is a well maintained place where visitors can get a good glimpse of the exotic and unique chameleon species found only in Madagascar. What's more? Snake, frogs, geco, lemurs, butterflies, moths, unique vegetation. Don't hurry just give ample time to enjoy, gather information of the species as you won't be able to find one else where - it's MADAGASCAR. Just go for it!!!
PINAK D — Google review
The highlight here is definitely the lemurs, they are free, interactive, and you can even feed them. This part was truly special and worth experiencing. Unfortunately, everything else was disappointing. The chameleons and other reptiles live most (or all) of their lives in cages, even those born at the reserve. Considering the short lifespan of many chameleons, this means they spend nearly their entire life in captivity. The crocodile is kept alone in an enclosure, and frogs are also permanently caged. In reality this is more of a small private zoo than a conservation reserve, and visitors are not told this clearly before paying, except for the lemurs, which were the one part that truly felt free and joyful.
Tsur M — Google review
This place is truly special and not to be missed. The lemur, chameleon and other encounters are spectacular. Having said that, you need to understand that these animals are managed and not wild. The lemurs have been relocated there. The chameleons are in big open cages where they are allowed to roam and breed with the eggs being returned to the wild. It seems a positive trade-off to me.
John R — Google review
It is a zoo for reptiles, some frogs, and some habituated lemurs, 1 of which has lost an arm. On arrival I thought the reptiles had free access to a large aviary. This is not the case, they are kept in small cages within the aviary so they can get them out for tourists. It would be far more interesting if you had to find them in the aviary. The chameleons do have a large space, which was much nicer and fun trying to find them. There are also some fruit bats, which I think need releasing, because they don't have enough room to fly Knowledgeable guides Interesting to see and learn about reptiles which may be too hard to see in the wild. They say they release the ones they breed into the wild. However, the guides need to be more assertive to stop tourists handling or scaring the animals. One tourist threw leaves, I think they were trying to attract a lemur, but could see they were scaring it, they were also touching the lemurs for their photos. Another kept picking chameleons off branches to have her photo taken with them. On entry it clearly said tourists should not touch the animals, but the guides said nothing. The guides need to stop this.

Don't mistake this palace with the restored Queen's Palace further uphill. This place is a total rip-off, with nothing inside. It's just a messy, empty hull with a few placards on Madagascar's independence that you can read about online.

Really cool Malagasy building with informative displays and knowledgeable guide. 40,000 to get in. They said you need an official guide. He will look for a tip and a chance to guide you around the other palace past the post office up the hill. I used another guide for that to spread the tip money around.
Steve L — Google review
Very few artifacts on display inside a couple of small room, really not much to see, not well preserved, no organization. As soon as you arrive, there are a lot of local "tour guides" who are not actually licensed guides who swarm up to the car who then try to coerce money out of you however they can. They'll keep telling you that they need to split the money between them and they need to save the money, wants euros or US dollars instead of the local currency (ariary) so they can get more, and it's not easy to leave until you pay them A LOT more than what they should guide (based on what the hotel and local driver told me). The driver was scared to tell me that they were asking for too much since these fake local "guided" would get mad at him later. The whole country is full of people who try to trick, beg, or coerce money out of you. Beware. I won't be going back and will let my friends/family know not to visit. The lemurs are not worth with dealing with the humans there.

Well, the place has been restored and it's great to see it in real... Actually, it's like the palaces we see in movies... :-) and it's would be awesome to visit the rooms upstairs but it's not yet possible for now

The Palace interior was being renovated when I was there. There are a limited number of exhibits but they are made fascinating if you have the right guide. My guide was "Tahina" who expertly explained the artifacts in excellent english (he speaks 5 languages). The weirdest exhibit was a small diorama of monkeys dressed in victorian guide at a party to represent the Malagasy people. It was presented by Napoleon to the Malagasy people as some sort of joke but they kept it all this time. You are asked to give the guide something after the tour. I asked my guide if he could help arrange a car and driver. He ended being my guide on a 12 day trip through southern Madagascar and did a great job. Ask for Tahina as your guide. I had a different guide at the Queen's Palace and he wasn't half as good.

I believe this is the largest cathedral in the city. It's a very beautiful structure and the interior was nice. I did not manage to inside the cathedral as there was a wedding ceremony ongoing. Looking from outside it did look well maintained. There's a very large statue of Mary but to get a good shot you'll need to get it from the bottom of the stairs leading up to the church. The neighborhood seems safe to walk about. It's on the way to the Rova Palace.

It was a poster display of the history of pirates generally and in Madagascar. It's all in French but some nice photos. There are some models that were sweet. A very modest 3 rooms in a side street of Tana.

I am not satisfied with the museum. It is a pirates pictures museum. I saw just very few items that can belong to previous eras. Even the other available items are newly made.

I loved my visit to this place. Very educating history about pirates. I liked the effort to translate the documents to English but there is some inconsistency and wrong captioning in the some of the translated texts. I will give 5 stars if the documents are corrected.

It's a tourist trap. It has some interesting panels on Malagasy pirates, but don't come here expecting to get a very good understanding of piracy in the Indian ocean or to see artifacts. You will find neither. But, for 10,000AR (3USD), I guess I can't complain.

King Julien was not there. Wish i'd seen him. Ive never been here. Was very fun. 10/10

Good for an hour to walk through. It is mostly in French, but they gave us an English version to read by ourselves as we went through.
Sally W — Google review
Nice idea, but not really convinced of the pirate history of Madagascar. Only one artifact to been see, a cannon.

Nestled in the heart of Antananarivo, Hotel Niaouly offers a charming and unpretentious retreat for travelers seeking comfort and authenticity. With 22 well-appointed rooms, some featuring delightful balconies, guests can enjoy stunning views of the city. The hotel boasts a cozy restaurant named "La terrasse d'Ambohijatovo," where you can savor delicious meals at reasonable prices.
A comfortable and lovely hotel with an incredible view! The rooms in the lower part are dark (good for sleeping) but charming. The rooms above are airy and bright. Beautiful decor and lovely sitting areas on the terrace and by the tv. The staff was attentive and kind. Fetra, at the bar, was kind and made everyone feel welcome. Would definitely stay here again in Tana.

Very good budget hotel halfway between the Basse Ville and the Haute Ville, so it's a bit of a climb to get here. Views from terrace are spectacular though. My room was basic but very clean, and, considering the unbeatably competitive price, the place is extremely good value. Best thing about the hotel may be the fantastic restaurant, which serves sophisticated creations in a French/Malagasy fusion style, and is also extremely good value. Recommended.

Manager smoked inside at 08:00 am during breakfast. Had to eat with sigarette smells. Horrible! Other than that a nice hotel with friendly staff and great view over the city.
Stef — Google review
Great rooms - comfortable and with decent wifi. Good location and reasonably priced. We loved the rooftop terrace overlooking the city.

I didn't like the hotel. From the rooms that were old, shower almost didn't work to the struggles with breakfast that we must pay twice. The only advantage is really nice view. Isn't worth the money.
Martin P — Google review
Stayed here twice. Both times no hot water/barely a trickle of cold water in the shower. Restaurant has huge menu which suggests nothing is fresh. For food, go down the road to Le Petit Verdot. Which was delicious.

Really enjoyed our stay here. View from balcony over Trana lovely. Staff helpful and most speak some English. We stayed in one of the cheapest rooms, satisfactory and great price for those of us travelling on a budget. Loved the location, walking distance to most things (even if up and down a very steep hill)

Great value for Tana. Clean and decent rooms. The food is good and fairly priced too. The location isn't too central but it shouldn't take you too long to reach the main sights.

My spouse and I lodged at the hotel and dined at Le Chalet des Roses. The hotel was satisfactory, although during our stay we had a room with a view of the elevator shaft, which we found to be quite fascinating! However, the food at the restaurant was exceptional. While there may have been one side dish that didn't appeal to my taste, my wife enjoyed it. We noticed some negative comments about the service, but personally, we were pleased with it.
Rooms are comfortable with kitchenette and good bathrooms. Despite being in the city it is on a quiet street. Staff are friendly and very helpful (even helping exchange currency when we missed the closing time for the exchange office). There is an adjoining restaurant that has a nice atmosphere and good food.

Classic hotel in Antananarivo that has a lot of French feeling to it. The room is lovely and feels homey with little balcony looking over street life below. The restaurant and bar are pretty iconic with lots of greenery serving traditional Malagasy and French cuisine.

Seems to be a popular hotel among Europeans. Good location and nice staff. Very efficient breakfast serving. The restaurant was great. Very cozy interior and the food was tasty. They helped out creating a vegetarian dish based on the meat alternatives on the menu.

First hotel we stayed in after travelling to Madagascar. Had a huge room on the 6th floor, with a balcony overlooking the city. Fortunately they had a small lift to get my luggage up! Left too early for breakfast but ate in the restaurant in the evening. Enjoyed the Italian menu, and it was good value and much nicer than the next 2 hotels. Safe to explore the area ( at the time), although recent riots have changed that for the moment. Disappointed our plans had to change and we're not going back. Staff were very helpful

Wife and I stayed at the hotel and ate here. Hotel was plenty good (at the end of our trip when we stayed here we had a room with a window to the elevator shaft... how cool is that!?) But the food was great I thought. Think there may have been a side dish I didn't like but that's on me, wife thought it was good. Seen some people have a gripe about the service. Wife and I really liked it. They leave you alone till you get there attention, usually just by eye contact. And there was always someone out there ready to help. On the topic of the servers we usually had Cedra (?), really hope that's how you spell his name. I liked him! Seriously no complaints.

We booked through GASY'CAR's discount, so the offer to price ratio is very decent in my opinion. We've read that Wi-Fi quality was an issue. But, in our experience, the Wi-Fi signal is very steady throughout our visit. (We stayed in 505 room, close to the central stairs.) The service is good, and the room has nothing to complain about really. Probably would not stay again as this hotel is above our usual price range (budget) for hotels, but was a good experience.

Nice and well located hotel! The staff was always friendly and helpful! The rooms are clean, but you can hear noises through the wall. The restaurant was tasty (pizza), the breakfast very basic.

Amazing hotel with amazing restaurant. The rooms are complete (bathroom with towels, table/office, chair, window, very comfortable beds…) The vibe is very good. I recommend the “stracciatella ice cream” in this restaurant of Italian specialities.
