Flea & Street Markets
The bustling Analakely Market in Antananarivo is a must-visit for both locals and tourists. This vibrant market offers a wide range of everyday essentials such as meats, vegetables, fish, fruits, and spices. Visitors can also explore the market's colorful stalls to find an array of curios, souvenirs, textiles, and trinkets at affordable prices.
Amazing, authentic African market. The sights, sounds, and scents are a feast for the senses. I had a local guide with me who helped to engage with the vendors and offer insights and history of the culture. Everything and anything is sold here...fruits, vegetables, meats, grains, clothes, toys, housewares, souvenirs, etc... No trip to Mada is complete without exploring this market. Pickpockets are part of the adventure - keep your head on a swivel, have someone watch your back, don't bring visible valuables. Check out Erik The Adventure Nerd on YouTube.

Fun African and authentic experience. The market stretch for many blocks and in many different directions. Most vendors do not act aggressively or harass passerby but appreciate and warmly welcome you when you shop or view their shop. Keep your hands on your pockets to be careful that nothing gets taken from you. Market gets extremely crowded.

I went for the fresh produce and local artifacts. That part was great. Lots of useless stuff from China etc. Probably best to go with a local guide or at least a driver as public transport not easy

Had read all the warnings about thieves and pickpockets, so was super vigilant. Backed up against a wall for security to take a photo - had my small camera literally ripped out of my hands. Don’t take anything but a few notes well hidden.

Historical place
Rovan' Ambohimanga is a captivating historical site nestled about 24 kilometers northeast of Antananarivo, Madagascar's capital. This centuries-old fortified royal settlement stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Merina people. The hill features well-preserved remnants of precolonial homes and tombs of significant monarchs, making it an essential symbol of Madagascar's past.
A must visit if you are near the capital. UNESCO heritage protected. Traditional kings building next to more modern (18c) queens palace. Still favourite with the followers of the old traditional religion where one wants to talk to ancestors and offer a sacrifice! Amazing experience. The entry gate to the sacred hill is worth a visit too
Irina S — Google review
Although very far from Antananarivo city centre if you have to visit one historical site in Antananarivo then make this Rovan' Amohimanga Palace a priority visit.Declared a UNESCO Heritage site this Palace complex has most of its original structure intact. Also the view of Antananarivo from this Palace Watchtower is breathtaking.
Rudolph F — Google review
It is a UNESCO world heritage. It is the king's palace from 1800s and has queen's summer house from 1900s. The summer house has gifts from different countries such as mirrors from Queen Victoria of England, french cristal ware and wallpaper from Japan. The ticket for foreigners costs 10000 and for local costs 400. I recommend visiting the place with a guide as there are not many written explanation. Has nice panoramik view at the top.

A UNESCO Heritage Site. Comprises a royal city and burial site, and an ensemble of sacred places. The Royal Hill was the burial ground for its sovereigns; built in the 15th century and was set up as a fortified political capital and royal palace during the reign of King Andriantsimitoviaminandriana in the 18th century.

Tsarasaotra Park, also known as Parc de Tsarasaotra, is a hidden gem located in the industrial zone of Antananarivo. Despite its urban surroundings, this wildlife reserve is a vital sanctuary for endangered bird species such as the Madagascar little grebe, Mellers duck, and Malagasy pond heron. The park's name translates to 'a good place to live,' particularly for birds.
Well worth a visit if you're in Antananarivo.

Vakas Z — Google review
A beautiful park with a lot of birds and wold nature, the big issues are that there are no indicators in park for alleys, and in a portion of the park people build up their houses, so while admiring the nature and birds you can end up on someones property

Pleasant walk around this park - visit early in the morning or late afternoon and bring a long lens for the many, many birds that live here. The northwest corner of the park has homes, but the rest is an oasis of nature in the middle of a crowded city. I believe this is the largest cathedral in the city. It's a very beautiful structure and the interior was nice. I did not manage to inside the cathedral as there was a wedding ceremony ongoing. Looking from outside it did look well maintained. There's a very large statue of Mary but to get a good shot you'll need to get it from the bottom of the stairs leading up to the church. The neighborhood seems safe to walk about. It's on the way to the Rova Palace.

Don't mistake this palace with the restored Queen's Palace further uphill. This place is a total rip-off, with nothing inside. It's just a messy, empty hull with a few placards on Madagascar's independence that you can read about online.
Randy L — Google review
Interesting place. We were talked into using a guide but we found it really wasn't necessary. Enough signs to tell a story. Worth the visit.
Diane A — Google review
Really cool Malagasy building with informative displays and knowledgeable guide. 40,000 to get in. They said you need an official guide. He will look for a tip and a chance to guide you around the other palace past the post office up the hill. I used another guide for that to spread the tip money around.
Steve L — Google review
Very few artifacts on display inside a couple of small room, really not much to see, not well preserved, no organization. As soon as you arrive, there are a lot of local "tour guides" who are not actually licensed guides who swarm up to the car who then try to coerce money out of you however they can. They'll keep telling you that they need to split the money between them and they need to save the money, wants euros or US dollars instead of the local currency (ariary) so they can get more, and it's not easy to leave until you pay them A LOT more than what they should guide (based on what the hotel and local driver told me). The driver was scared to tell me that they were asking for too much since these fake local "guided" would get mad at him later. The whole country is full of people who try to trick, beg, or coerce money out of you. Beware. I won't be going back and will let my friends/family know not to visit. The lemurs are not worth with dealing with the humans there.
Chloe ' — Google review
Well, the place has been restored and it's great to see it in real... Actually, it's like the palaces we see in movies... :-) and it's would be awesome to visit the rooms upstairs but it's not yet possible for now
Toky R — Google review
The Palace interior was being renovated when I was there. There are a limited number of exhibits but they are made fascinating if you have the right guide. My guide was "Tahina" who expertly explained the artifacts in excellent english (he speaks 5 languages). The weirdest exhibit was a small diorama of monkeys dressed in victorian guide at a party to represent the Malagasy people. It was presented by Napoleon to the Malagasy people as some sort of joke but they kept it all this time. You are asked to give the guide something after the tour. I asked my guide if he could help arrange a car and driver. He ended being my guide on a 12 day trip through southern Madagascar and did a great job. Ask for Tahina as your guide. I had a different guide at the Queen's Palace and he wasn't half as good.

Very good. “European restaurant” is not fair, since there is a fusion with local food. The duck with Foie grass was pretty local, as ingredient and interpretation (in a positive way). The relaxed atmosphere around the pool is also great.

We ate on the first floor restaurant. Nice and cosy. Extensive menu plus specials on the blackboard. Service was excellent, portions generous and extremely tasty. Two courses for 2 people plus water and 3 cocktails came to £23. Only complaint was that I had no room for pudding! If we had more time we’d definitely be back.
Louise R — Google review
The food was really good, but for a restaurant of this reputation the waiters need to learn that the clients are paying customers and not their enemies. Our waiter Alberto was fine and did a good job. But the lady in the bar short hair and glasses. Was incredible rude. I made an allergic reaction to spice and began sneezing uncontrollably, I used the napkin provided by the restaurant. The lady arrived after the factory with paper napkins and yelled at me for sneezing on the other napkin, as if I was a clairvoyant knowing I was going to sneeze. After we told her the irrationality of her argument, she went to their colleagues and mock me by sizing a few times over the dinner. I have never seen that on a restaurant before. Really left us an extremely bad memory of what at that point a good evening.

An institution in Tana! Coming here since many years. Also the hotel is recommended! The food though is consistently delicious, fresh ingredients, creative food design and superb taste. Even great value for money, as you can tell since it's always full, lunch or dinner. Keep up the good work, team Sakamanga! 😋😜✌️

The Queen's Palace is a historic landmark that was used as the residence of Imerina and Madagascar rulers during the 17th to 19th centuries. It provides breathtaking views of Tana, especially during sunset. Visitors can take a guided one-hour tour of various palaces in the complex, including the church and memorials. The palace's ship-like construction style is an interesting sight to behold.
20,000 Ariary for the entrance and a must visit if you come to Antananarivo to understand the History of the Queen and the Colonization of Madagascar by the French, very impressive and must visit
Abdullah B — Google review
Worth the visit. The building it self tells a story. The exhibits are few and simple. The information in films and digital exhibits tells very simplistic and selective history of Madagascar all the way to its Independence, but is a good introduction for those no familiar with the the last three centuries of Monarchy, Colonial Times, and the struggle for independence of this fascinating Island. The site offers one of the best views of Antananarivo.
Vicente S — Google review
Beautiful palace and place to learn about Malagasy history. However it is a pity that they burned it some years ago so most of the place is renovated. Small museum inside about kings, queens, Madagascar and some nice items. Amazing view from top of Antananarivo as it is at the highest point of the city.
Miguel S — Google review
Very nice place to visit, certainly to recommend! Everything described in malgasy, french and English. A guide is good to give you some more background to the things, but not really necessary.
Roland G — Google review
Quite a nice view. And a 20000 entry fee for a short visit is fair enough. A short visit is plenty of time to walk around the recreation of the historic buildings. There are some interesting historic artifacts inside some but there's not much left of original architecture after the fire in 1995. You may find a tour guide helpful if you want a longer tour. Beware. No photos allowed inside buildings- dunno why they don't want people sharing the interesting stuff but whatever.
Remer J — Google review
It was exceptional. I went in 2019 before the renovations, and it was alright. Now, since the renovations, it is SO much better. It's like a museum inside, and the guide was a huge help. Very knowledgeable, and the history of Madagascar really comes together. I recommend going with the two hour tour, because there's so much to see. It's too bad they don't let you take pictures inside, because there is some really beautiful stuff. Although, if we were allowed to take pictures, it would have taken 4 hours.lol
Rubel S — Google review
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this palace. It costed inr 360 rupees. The guide was too good with his explanation about the displays. The views are great as you can see. Worth visiting.

Be careful of non official tour guides! I can say that museum is one of the highlights of Antananarivo. It shows and gives you more closer picture about political situation in Madagascar. Photos from some reason are not allowed inside of museum. It is easy to visit as it is walking distance from downtown, but you have to go up hill. It was rebuild after the fire, so many things are replica. Entrance is 20 K for two hours visit. Watch out of non official tour guides as we got scammed at the end. We had a tour from 3-5 pm ( at the end of the opening hours) so it was not crowded. Our guide finished a tour in a back yard where his friend join us and they asked 50 euros for a tips. Friendly guide at the beginning of our visit turn out in very unpleasant guy. We gave him 30k (10k was to cover his ticket - locals have reduced price) and we managed to leave the site but we felt unsafe on our way back to hotel as we knew he had a another friend at the entrance of the gate which we met at the first place. Luckily we came to hotel without any issue but that incident left bitter taste of Antananarivo.

This place is a paradise for meat lovers as it serves a delightful array of red and white meats accompanied by salads and rice.

I loved how you just kept being brought different meat options until you lowered the flag that the put on your table! I really enjoyed eating snake, crocodile and beef, chicken and pork. The shisha is not good at all so dont bother wasting your money on it. Ughhh...

All-you-can-eat African barbeque restaurant (similar to Brazilian Churrasco). Meat selection includes lamb legs, lamb chops, chicken wings, spare ribs, beef heart, beef tongue and snake meats. The meal includes French fries, mango pickles, and condiment sauces. The meats were okay - I found many of the meats were a bit heavy on black pepper which covered the meat taste. After you finished, they brought grilled pineapples as “dessert.” The service was excellent, the waiters spoke English brought the requested meats, frequently checking if you need anything and helped me find and negotiated taxi fare.

While some have noted occasional inconsistencies in food quantity and quality, many visitors highly recommend trying their delicious pasta and pizza, as well as the homemade limoncello.
Excellent Italian restaurant. Very nice interior where you are welcomed by friendly staff. English speakers. A good choice of dishes and pizzas, with an extensive wine list. Also non alcoholic cocktails served (no non alcoholic beer however). The food is delicious, and beautifully presented.

it was our first time trying out this restaurant and we came out with smiles on our faces and very satisfied ! the decor is great, the staff are smiling and happy to help with our questions and the food is top notch ! i had a mozzarella, rocket, mushroom and olive calzone, which i absolutely loved. and my partner had the 4 Formaggi pizza, he kept saying how light and airy it was ! we both loved the fresh tomato sauce, made to perfection. you can taste the quality of the produce in each bite, we highly recommend ☺️

Probably one of the best pizzas i’ve ever had. Felt a bit like in italy as one part of the restaurant looks like a pizza oven. Service was great, highly recommend!!
WissenmachtH — Google review
Classic Italian restaurant. The further you go into the back rooms, the more intense the feeling of being in Italy becomes. Some tables have hooks for storing handbags, very attentive. Why some other tables were built from Euro pallets is probably only clear to the architect. Unfortunately, annoying Eurotrash music ruins the whole beautiful 'Italien' ambience. The prices for the menu shown at Google you have to multiply with 1,15 as of December 2024. The service is very attentive and noteworthy. The food, on the other hand, is of standard level (even the obligatory pepper mill is of no use). I would have liked some bread with the quite ok octopus carpaccio (as an Italian, it should be easy to bake in the pizza oven), the Pizza Alla Pescatora was surprisingly 'clear' in terms of toppings and taste. The spicy oil was absolutely helpful in this case. Conclusion: in Europe it would probably be one of many, but under local circumstances it is certainly a very good choice

I’ve eaten well all over the world (highlights: Bogota and Tbilisi) but this place put Tana squarely on the map for me! Delicious Magret de Canard the last time I was here, then tonight the tuna and calamari was sublime!
Kevin P — Google review
We had diner at this restaurant after trying Varangue and Kudeta, hoping it's pretty close to the others. It was a disappointment though. We had the meron with cheese and lasagna. The meron was old and oily, with a pregnant fish smell and the lasagna was below average, basically tasteless. Besides this, when asking to pay with credit card they insisted a lot of times that they charge an extra 5% for cc fees, something the other restaurants don't charge. Also the prices are pretty much the same as the other 2 restaurants, but the quality is not even close. Besides all this we both were pretty ill after this dining experience, but i can't say for sure it was the food.

This is a combination of a zoo and a botanical garden. I wouldn't say it's the best place I've ever visited, but if you're already in Antananarivo and want to see some interesting animal and plant species, it's worth a visit. The entrance fee is affordable, but it's important to note that the animals are kept in very small and enclosed spaces. However, if you're looking to take a walk and enjoy beautiful plant species and a scenic lake, you might find this place quite enjoyable.

Very dilapidated place, with some very unhappy animals. The level of care is way too low. Also the rubbish and plastic waste is obscene! It's apparent that the team have no incentive or will to care for the animals or the gardens.
Tim M — Google review
Unfortunately, quite poor garden, suffering animals in unsufficient conditions, mess and rubbish all over the garden, damaged plants and trees (marked and scratched by visitors), many empty spaces, dead animals (I saw 1 bird and 1 chameleon). Well, don't expect standards like in developed countries. Artificially created biotopes have a nice idea, but the reality will bring disappointment..

Very nicely decorated place having in mind surroundings where you need to fight with beggers to come to the entrance of this Bistro. I had really, really high expectations, we only ordered espresso and icecream. I don't know what type of people usually come here but to pay for one scoop of icecream 8.500 aria is just way to much. But OK, that wasn't a problem. My problem is that 2 months ago I have been in Tuscany, Italy, ate their gelato, scoop had the same price but it was like 1000 times more delicious ice cream. And in Italy they give in one scoop two different ice cream flavors. Same is in Croatia. In Iran I payed one scoop 1.000 aria and flavors were much more richier. 3 espresso and 6 scoops we payed 76.000 aria (15€). Way too much. Big dissapointment. And about location, there is no view on city, you are surrounded by some green wired wall from outside world, you feel like on some isolated island. I don't know about their other food, but what I have seen in passage on my way out pizza didn't look like italian napoletana or romana, but maybe that could have been better choice. Overall all 3 of us are not satisfied neither with quality, neither with prices. The only good think Bar is superbly decorated, Antananarivo authorities must deal woth powerty so this bar eoth fancy name Le Buffet du Jardin can really be in Jardin, opened to people.

The only place in two weeks of Madagascar where they tried to cheat us on the bill. We were a large group of 20 people and they tried three times to steal on the bill: put a dish twice, put a higher price than the one in the menu for two dishes. Never happened before in Madagascar and I hope it is an isolated occurrence. The food was just average, nothing out of the ordinary and prices aligned the location 😀. The service was reasonably fast for Madagascar, taking into account we ordered by phone two hours before arrival.
Felix E — Google review
Everyone be careful!! !!!This is a cheating restaurant!!! Especially foreigners!! When we asked for the facture, he gave us a wrong one (147,000ar), i found out and ask him to change. We ordered World Cola and the waiter (the man in photo) deliberately changed it to Coca Cola 12,000ar which is doble of the price of World Cola. Then the dessert is also a trap! They will offer you a plate of different cakes without telling you one is 20,000ar for a lemon tart. Their manager cannot speak English, so he only listened to his staff, who told him my son ordered Coca Cola not his fault. Please ALL beware of this restaurant!!!

The menu features delicious local dishes such as Romazava, pork with lacquered onions, and spicy sausages. Guests can enjoy their meals in the lovely garden or indoors, where they may be treated to live piano music on Sundays.
I ordered the zebu, cooked for 10 hours with potatoes, and I must say it was absolutely delicious and packed with flavor. The meat was tender and rich, making each bite a true pleasure. The drinks we tried were also fantastic, complementing our meal perfectly. Each sip was refreshing and well-crafted, enhancing the overall dining experience. However, there was one aspect that could use some improvement: the brownies. Unfortunately, they were quite dry, which was disappointing after such a wonderful meal. A little more moisture or a richer texture would elevate them significantly.

Well...I had expectations as I came from the Princess Bora on Sainte Marie. But... It's a nice place, they did a great restauration job and created a good, relaxing atmosphere. The service did a good job, too. But the food disappointed me. The waiter recommended the zebu steak and so I did. The redwine-onion sauce was delicious, but just too less for a sauce lover like me. Half of the steak and it was already gone. I ordered mayonnaise and got remoulade, which is not a bad thing as it was also delicious. But the steak...the meat quality was bad, several tendons and hard in some places, too. The experience of eating a great steak got destroyed, I gave approx a third of the meat to the cat next to me. Very sad as it was my last Dinner before I need to attend my flight back to Europe. And yes, I totally agree to one of the other opinions here: you should add information about possible food allergies on menu. Fifou, the owner, manages several Restaurants/Hotels in Europe, he usually has to know and take care as with the price point here, this restaurant definitely aims to tourists, business people and wealthy Madagassi. So here is big room for development.

Food quality is good but it's now quite overpriced, service can be slow, waiters don't check on tables often enough. Fruit juices and cocktails are extortionate. I had catch of the day, fries and vegetables and it was all very nice except the tartar sauce which was not good.

Ambohitsorohitra Palace stands as a striking symbol of Madagascar's political history, showcasing impressive architecture that captures the eye. Although it is one of the city's well-preserved landmarks, access to this heavily guarded site is restricted, and photography is prohibited. Interestingly, the palace no longer serves as the official residence for Madagascar's president; its significance has shifted since a military coup in 2009 led to increased tensions surrounding this historic building.

Nestled in the vibrant Mahamasina district of Antananarivo, the Barea Mahamasina Stadium is a stunning venue that can accommodate up to 40,260 spectators. Recently renovated, this national stadium boasts modern turf and tracks, making it an ideal spot for both football matches and athletic events. During my visit, I stumbled upon a practice session for an exciting match between Madagascar and Ghana. The stadium's architecture is impressive, reminiscent of world-class venues found in places like Doha.
Totally renovated. This is the national stadium of Madagascar right in the heart of Antananarivo. Looking fabulous. New turf and tracks. Very spacious and gorgeous. Also has training field just by it. There are basketball courts outside of the stadium. Clean environment and a good place to watch a game or come play basketball.

Domestic airport
Ivato International Airport has recently undergone significant improvements, with a dedicated international arrival and departure building that offers a less crowded and more efficient experience. The airport now features walkways connecting the planes to the building, eliminating the need for stairs and exposure to outdoor weather. Additionally, escalators have been installed inside the building for easier navigation. The new baggage area represents a substantial upgrade from previous facilities. Travelers can expect smooth check-in procedures and fast immigration services at this newly built international terminal.
Much better than the old terminal, ample seating, but limited options for food and drink (Halal Food not available) no smoking area as well

A beautiful, clean and modern international airport of a small African state. I was pleased to find that there were places everywhere to charge my mobile and the WiFi was good and strong, unlike many other airports

Take note that their own local currency, the Madagascar Ariary, cannot be used inside the airport after passing the customs. Only EUR and USD are accepted.

Ivato International Airport exceeded my expectations in every way! The modern terminal is sleek and efficient, with friendly staff and a seamless check-in process. The airport's design is stunning, with plenty of natural light and comfortable seating areas. I loved the local touches and artwork on display, which added to the airport's charm. The staff were helpful and courteous, and the airport's amenities were top-notch. Departing from Ivato was a breeze, and I'll always look back on my time here fondly. Highly recommend!

I have been through the international and domestic terminals. It is fairly clean, I like the wooded chairs in the waiting areas. All the basics seem to be covered, there are some food options. It is a small airport.
Pavel S — Google review
The ADEMA check in staff seem poorly trained . I arrived in good time only to spend 1 hour having my visa and onward flight booking authenticated . 5 long checks and 3 phone calls until they accepted me to fly. When I complained I was met by rudeness from the girl and her supervisor . Adding a photo of the rude woman as she would not give me her name for my complaint
Michael C — Google review
The main airport in the country, almost all international airlines are operating trips toward Madagascar to this airport, its location is good, very friendly and helpful staff, there is no duty free. The Airport is new, clean and well managed.
Abdelhadi B — Google review
A very new airport when we passed through it in 2023, 'Ivato International Airport' will need a lot of attention if it's not to depreciate rapidly. We travelled through via the business class lounges, which were alright (being new), but offered very little in the way of entertainment, international food, plus there was no alcohol. There was a nice photographic exhibition on the walls, which (from up-to-date pictures) I can see are still there now, a year later. Not sure if that's good or bad. Immigration, customs and boarding procedure were not that good; queues were long and disorganized. It's a very bad policy that you cannot use any of their own currency in the airport, which means that only euros and US dollars can be used. Madagascan currency cannot be changed to your currency, so be sure to do this outside. There was a 'hut' nearby that did this. Not the worst international airport I've been through, but the signs are there!

Transportation service
Cotisse Transport stands out as a premium option for travelers navigating Madagascar's scenic routes. While it may come with a higher price tag, the experience is generally more comfortable compared to other local transport options. They primarily operate from Antananarivo and offer limited routes, which can be a bit tricky if you're looking to travel between destinations without paying full fare for the entire journey.
Travel Tana 2 Tamatav 400 KM Benz Bus Comfortable
Basant O — Google review
I did the Antananarivo - Morondava road trip with this company, and I do not recommend it at all. It was supposed to be a 12 to 14 hours drive, and it went up to almost 17 hours. For this kind of trip, they should use the most comfortable buses, but instead of this, we had a very old bus, with no AC (30 celsius degrees or more for the whole trip), and dirty. At some points there was rain and the water leaked through the windows, a lot. Besides this, if you find a flight between these 2 cities on a date that fits for you, take it with no hesitation, don't take the bus. The road is in horrendous conditions, so bad that the bus can barely make more than 50km/hour in most of the ride. And in a bus as bad as this one, this can be the worst road trip experience.
Nicolas M — Google review
Cotisse Transport bus service office at Ambodivona in Antananarivo. Large well maintained reception room with bookings for buses going to different parts of Madagascar.
Rudolph F — Google review
I wouldn't go through this again. Just fly. However, if you want to go cheap and have a 10hrs+ to waste AND speak French fluently, yes, do Cotisse. But go for the Premium or VIP ride. This terminal has plenty of bathrooms. It also has a full cafe with actual croissants! My trip between Antananarivo and Toamasina was estimated 9hrs. Going out, it became 16hrs. Returning it was approximately 12hrs. The roads are tight and there's other full size tractor trailer traffic. The Cotisse terminal staff were as helpful as they could be despite the language barrier. It's a semi-professional operation. The drivers are the same. Good, reliable Premium and VIP vans. Swift, skilled driving; dry or heavy downpour. If you DO NOT ask for specific things, they will not tell you. Be annoying. Ask the question. Every business in this country is the same: they'll stare at you for 10hrs straight but are reluctant to communicate or give the customer information. They're not being rude, they just seriously don't know any better.
Daisuke I — Google review
The best in Madagascar But not the best at all Sometimes they cancel a trip But at least they call and try to give you a solution Very smaaaalllll sits and no other option many times Some distention like ‘ ambanja- diago - ambolibe - nosy be’ No option to take vip or premium some times Over all After 130 trips with cotisse You are the best But you need to improve
Eslam Y — Google review
Cotisse is one of the expensive/luxury Transport companies in the country. As usual in Madagascar, no WhatsApp works too much - anyway I attach the photo with phone numbers for inquiries. - They offer some routes from/to Antananarivo. If you want a route 'in between', sadly you'll need to pay full price even when not doing 100% of the trip; that's certainly one of the downsides of travelling by land in this country. (For example, we wanted to go to Ambositra, and then to Fianaratsoa. Tickets were 20.000 from Tana. But then, from Ambositra to Fiana, we would still have to pay the full 40.000, that's the initial price they charge from Tana to Fianaratsoa 🙈 that's just how it works on Madagascar). - They have three kind of cars, depending on the route (Lite/premium/vip). - Prices are not cheap, but the service was very good. It did depart on time! The car was not super comfortable (for example seats didn't lean back) but okay. The office was clean, with toilets, a cafeteria and wifi with vouchers (didn't work too much). - At the office we found only ONE staff member speaking English and he was very helpful and kind. Otherwise we'd had need to use translator (sadly we speak no french nor Malagasy; that's something we should improve for sure). - Highly recommended to buy tickets one or even two days in advance. The vehicles are small and have a few seats. You can choose them in advance and they do respect your place 💚 - At least in our Tana-Ambositra trip, we had one stop around 2 hrs after departure. So I assume they go without stopping all the way, but that's something you should ask beforehand.
Carola D — Google review
A lot of rumours about this company. Website contacts are not up to date. They never reply to emails in English. Unfortunately, there is no WhatsApp contact available. However, you can sort out everything at the place. This is a big taxi-brousse station with lots of information, help desks, ticket desks, coffee shops, restaurant, shops, toilet, etc. Our journey to Morondava was long (14h), but quite smooth. There was broken TV and no WiFi in the bus as promised. The best places to book are behind the driver. There are Cotisse offices all over the country. Some staff speaks good English. Do not get scammed by “tour operators” who just resell Cotisse tickets as private transfer with transfers to/from your hotel for 5 times the actual price.
I X — Google review
Very comfortable compared to all the other mini busses in Madagascar. Prices (for western hemisphere people) absolutely affordable. Driver made a Stop every 2 to 3 hours during the night. Only the non stop music was a bit bothersome. And I was sitting next to the door wich was leaking during a heavy rainfall. I was getting wet. But hey, thats Madagascar.

Madagascar Underground is a popular hostel in Tana, known for its relaxed atmosphere and vibrant Mexican restaurant. The hostel offers simple dorms and private rooms, with a rooftop terrace for guests to enjoy. It's also famous for its locally brewed craft beers and delicious Mexican food like tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. Happy hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm-8pm offers 2-for-1 margaritas.
I really enjoyed this hostel. It's loud and lively at the right times and quiet and relaxing at the right times too. I was skeptical about Malagasy, Mexican food at first, but I enjoyed eating a zebu burrito, and breakfast was quite good too. Lastly, the staff were all very friendly and attentive, and I always felt safe and comfortable.

This is the best hostel in Tana. The rooms are expensive, but the staff is friendly and the atmosphere here is truly that of a hostel. The owners are a really nice and very helpful. They let guests use the kitchen and have a good dorm space. I recommend this place to anyone staying in Tana, but I also recommend getting out of Tana as soon as you can. The only normal option for staying at Tana. Still, dorms and rooms are very expansive as for what you get. Staff is helpful and knows English very well but the managers are very unpleasant. Spoilt for choice in all things to remember Madagascar with. From baskets, to aluminum, zebu horn to wood, stone trinkets … they’ve got it all … even the foodstuff vanilla, baobab. I left with a lot of things and the prices were decent. Highly recommended!!!

This is more of a tourist shop where you can buy handicrafts of Madagascar, vanilla and other delicacies of the island. Nothing special, plus I found the vanilla and vanilla products too pricey. It's for sure, not a gallery. I would go again but I would buy my vanilla sticks from real groceries or open markets.

(Translated by Google) A place that's enriching for its cinema and its library. There's a selection, but not enough in some sections (novels, for example). The security guards, especially the young one, don't know how to act as interfaces and lack courtesy. They need to be taught how to communicate, especially with the young Vazahas, who can indeed be quite abrupt. There's unfair treatment. Having to leave all your belongings in the lockers, when we have computers to work on, is ridiculous, while others, who have neither books to return nor computers, can enter with their backpacks. We've seen women, with small baskets completely open, who had to take everything out and carry everything by hand, and were assigned a locker right next to the restrooms, and closest to the ground (by the locker security guard, who had overheard the exchanges between the young woman and the young security guard). It's a shame; it could be an ideal place. The IFM also has other attractions: the terrace and the children's corner (although limited).

We contacted Madagascar Natural Tours only a week before we landed in Tana , Mr Harilala the head guy arranged a wonderful adventure including flying West to Morondova to see Avenue Des Baobabs and also driving East to Andasebe to see Lemur, Crocs and Chameleon. His team of drivers and guides did everything in their power to make our visit a success. The choice of hotels on offer including the Combava Hotel in Tana and Lemur Lodge in Andasebe was excellent. Madagascar is definately worth a visit .

I just finished the 17-DAY MADAGASCAR NORTH & SOUTH WILDLIFE & CULTURE EXPLORATION tour with Madagascar Natural Tours. Thanks to Harilala, Lucas, and all of our other incredible drivers and guides along the way, I had an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience in Madagascar. From start to finish, everything was handled with care, professionalism, and a genuine desire to make our trip special. Harilala was incredibly helpful and accommodating from the very beginning. He worked closely with us to create an itinerary that included everything I wanted—and more. It was clear right away how knowledgeable and passionate he is about his country. His organization, trustworthiness, and good communication gave me confidence and peace of mind before we even arrived. Even after our 17-day tour officially ended, he kindly arranged accommodations for us and personally drove us to the airport. That level of dedication and thoughtfulness was truly above and beyond. Lucas was also a fantastic guide. He made sure everything went smoothly along the way and went out of his way to make our time fun and memorable. He was always checking in to make sure we were comfortable and happy. I can’t imagine what the experience would have been like without him. Despite the rough and bumpy roads in Madagascar, we always felt safe thanks to our skilled and cautious drivers. Every part of the journey—from parks and wildlife encounters to cultural experiences and local food—was well thought-out and executed with care. The accommodations that we stayed at also exceeded my expectations. Madagascar Natural Tours gave me everything I was hoping for: peace of mind, a real sense of adventure, new experiences, and memories I’ll carry with me forever.

Excellent and very professional experience with Madagascar Natural Tours! My mom and I only had 12 days for the trip so we created a custom itinerary to make sure to see the top sights, including rare lemurs in Andasibe, ancient baobab trees near Ifaty, medicinal plants in the national parks, and the pristine beach of Anakao. At each location we had the best guides, who really knew the plants and animals. All of our drivers were very safe - which was important for us as two women travelling abroad. The company founder Harilala is very friendly, accomodating, flexible and kind. We even had a last-minute flight delay and he was able to pivot impressively fast to ensure that we could still see what we'd planned! We also are vegetarian and he ensured we alway ate at places that had options for our dietary needs. If you are interested in nature, especially birds and plants, then this is the tour operator for you.

We have recently finished a 10 day tour of Madagascar in April 2025 using the operator “Madagascar Natural Tours” from start to finish it almost felt too good to be true, I have never met any one else from Australia who has been to Madagascar so we were very hesitant in whether it would be safe and had no idea how to organise a holiday there or what to expect. Harilala was extremely professional and communicative the entire way and answered every single (too many) questions of ours and made us feel comfortable and excited. He planned our itinerary just perfectly we listed a couple of things we had wanted to see - baobab avenue, lemurs and Nosy Be. He organised our whole itinerary, accomodation and flights for us so that it flowed seamlessly. He provided options in accomodation as we were seeking honeymoon style resorts. The hotels that he booked were beautiful, clean, great food and lovely staff! We had a few internal flights in our itinerary and it was so nice stepping off the plane and trusting that there would be a guide there waiting for us to get us to our hotel. The few times during our stay we had a question regarding our tour, Harilala would reply to our messages almost immediately and paid very careful attention to ensure we were happy and getting the most out of our tour. Using Madagascar Natural Tours took all stress out of the holiday / planning and allowed us to just show up and make memories of a lifetime! I would highly recommend this company to anybody curious to explore the incredible Madagascar! Particularly if you do not speak French, we struggled with the language barrier however all guides had amazing English which was such a relief. We can’t wait to come back in a few years time!!

Our experience with the conpany was very positive. They arranged custom tour for us in very short time frame and everything went smoothly. Our driver took very good care of us and drove us safely around Madagascar even though the roads are not in very good condition. They have english speaking drivers for those whi don't speak french. Owner of the company is very active on whatsapp and Facebook, so it is veey easy to get information about tours. Would recommend.

Great time, excellent tour guide and driver made Madagascar a must experience country. There's nothing in the world like Madagascar. The fauna, scenery, all sorts of life big and small cannot be found anywhere else. The lemurs were the cherry on the sundae. Stand up next to a baobab tree and experience the power of this unusual long living tree. Craftsmanship abounds in fiber, paper, clay, wood and other mediums. Our guide was filled with information and a career in the tourist industry equipped him to answer my endless questions! He was able to offer us an amazing opportunity to visit a small rural village and see life from such an intimate perspective and meet people who, despite limited resources, were happy and providing for themselves and family. One's average tour would not have given us this opportunity; this was a highlight in our trip. It's a once in a lifetime experience.
