(Plaza Chica) Plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra

Nestled just a block north of the bustling Plaza Grande, the Plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra, affectionately known as Plaza Chica, serves as a charming retreat in Patzcuaro. This vibrant square is adorned with lush trees and colorful flowers, creating an inviting atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. At its heart stands a statue honoring Gertrudis Bocanegra, a local heroine of Independence who played a pivotal role in her community's history.
My favorite town in Michoacán alongside Morelia. This plaza has some of the best local Mexican food I’ve ever had for the best prices I’ve ever seen in a popular town. Beautiful, old, historical, and romantic setting with a humble local vibe. I recommend the birria de borrego, tacos, tamales, enchiladas, and various soups.

This is a beautiful square in a beautiful city. We loved getting to visit patzcuaro, michoacan. And if we are ever in the area we would definitely go back.

Loved it this are vendors on a street corridor in Pátzcuaro Michoacán in Mexico but they are very clean, delicious food, prices are very reasonable.
Edith P — Google review
We were just passing through the city and stopped to do some shopping and get a agua fresca. We happened to be there the day of the Corpus Cristi celebration parade.
Jennifer R — Google review
Very old, historical. (Read up on the history). Plenty of seating. Shady and sunny areas. Traffic passes around all sides, but not too distracting. Well keep. Clean.
John P — Google review
Like every time I have the opportunity to visit, it is a pleasure. Great atmosphere, awesome cuisine and many dishes to choose from. Love their people, very friendly and welcoming to everyone. It's definitely one of the. Must go places.
Jorge L — Google review
Great place to hang out and people watch.

Nice little plaza in Patzcuaro. Usually, it is busy, likely because there is an entrance to the market. The market is worth a visit. You might find vegetables and fruits, say Europeans like me, have never seen. The prices are very decent, if not to say low. In addition, the market has lots of Cocinas Economicas, with good quality food.

La Surtidora is a charming Mexican and Latin restaurant located in Patzcuaro, offering delicious traditional cuisine in a quaint setting facing Plaza Vasco de Quiroga. The ambiance is delightful, with the option to dine outdoors or indoors amidst shelves stocked with various items for sale. The menu features delightful dishes such as Uchepo and Swiss enchiladas, along with options for special diets.
We stopped at this restaurant by chance, knowing nothing much about it. What a surprise!! Our server was amazing considering our poor abilities to speak Spanish and his somewhat limited ability in English. His recommendations for dinner items was perfect. The food was delicious. Our drinks were great. The coffee and desert (carrot cake) was a great finish to a very enjoyable evening on our very first day in Patzcuaro Mexico 🇲🇽

The food we order has great flavor. All waiters were wearing face mask I guess as precaution. The service was excellent 👌. This is a great place to rest and also have a cup of unique coffee which they also sell.
Lilia E — Google review
My favorite restaurant in Patzcuaro Michoacán Mexico. Located in the central square and close to everything downtown. The food is a mixture of traditional Michoacano foods and international cuisine. The staff is amazing and the chef is excellent! The atmosphere is casual, upscale, and calm.
Sean G — Google review
Inside the restaurant is classic colonial architecture with a rich ambiance. Outside on the sidewalk sitting under the arcade overlooking the plaza is just perfect. We tried their Michoacán specialties and enjoyed the exploration. Service is relaxed so don't expect to be in a fast food environment but the staff are cheerful and attentive. No credit cards! Highly recommend a visit.
Michael C — Google review
Quick service, nice ambience, great location, tasty food, good portion size and not too expensive. Despite being vegetarian, we found adequate choice of sopa tarasca, corunda con raja y queso and spaghetti. The lemonade was fantastic as well. Greatly appreciate that all waiters wear mask, face shield and gloves. Clean toilets. Cash only.
Krithika M — Google review
It’s good, nice place to eat, chat, and have breakfast. The view is nice for people watching. Variety of wines and drinks.
DudeIMaBEAR — Google review
Is fine the place is beatiful with the old furnitures , but the service is awful, including the fact that they don’t accept credit cards, the food is regular…
Ivan N — Google review
The location is great and the selection of drinks is even better anywhere from coffee and chocolate to tequila and charanda. You can also find traditional food and desserts. Stop for a coffee or a drink and a cigar right at the edge of the Plaza. The price is right but the place gets crowded and service can take a bit long.

Mexican restaurant
Restaurante El Patio is a popular dining spot located in the heart of Vasco de Quiroga square, offering a taste of local regional cuisine from Morelia and Patzcuaro. The restaurant is known for its well-prepared dishes and great service. Visitors can savor traditional Michoacan platters, unique tacos, fresh salads, and delicious mole with distinct flavors.
Restaurant Review: El Patio It's on the south side of Plaza Grande in Pátzcuaro. This restaurant has been here since the last century. The food has always been good, but we were told they have a new chef, so we went to check it out. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience: good service, nice atmosphere, delicious comida.

Really excellent food with attention to detail. Transitional menu work very high quality... Beautiful salad, rich tamalitos, and some of the best hot salsa we have had. Highly recommended!

Food was okay not the greatest. Michoacán’s mezcal isn’t my favorite, I’d stick to Oaxacan mezcal.

Great spot to eat local regional food from Morelia and Patzcuaro. Everything was clean, well made and the service was also great. I ordered a Mole. It wasn’t my favourite mole of all time but it was great. This mole isn’t as sweet as the mole poblano actually it isn’t sweet at all you will taste chili and other flavours first.

The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud is a historic Catholic church located on a hill that was once a pre-Hispanic ceremonial site. The interior is adorned with captivating artworks, intricate decorations, and stunning stained-glass windows.

Casa de los Once Patios, situated in the charming town of Patzcuaro, Mexico, is a must-visit destination. This historic architectural marvel boasts eleven captivating courtyards, each with its own unique theme and allure. Adjacent to Casa de los Once Patios lies the Santa Caterina de Siena convent, now home to numerous artisans showcasing the cultural richness of Michoacan through their work.
We came in early on Christmas day, before the crowds. Best decision we ever made. Authentic ponchos, beautiful tapestries, placemats, and copper and silver ware from around the country. Vendors are polite and not pushy. Additionally, there is a miniatures store that is by far the gem of the patios. They don’t allow photos, and I didn’t realize it until I already took the video. Stop by there and just absorb it all.

Ron M — Google review
Loved this place with lots of little artisan shops. The building itself is a 2-story colonial, built around 11 patios and courtyards which in turn are lined with individual shops and studios of many different artisans. I purchased some textiles as well as a gold leafed copper bowl. Patzcuaro is all about artisans and this is a great place to see a variety of them.
Michael B — Google review
It's a beautiful place, where you can take amazing photos. The only thing I think I didn't like too much was the fact that there are a lot of local stores and I think it's more commercial than cultural.

Breathtaking views after the rain stopped, friendly wild dogs, amazing stair climb if you want to, otherwise the drive up is relatively easy. Stupid hours though. We were there until at least 8 pm. without being run off, but we were told it was closed by then.

Amazing place indeed! Due to some road construction work, needed to leave car and walk the last 2 km to reach here. Beautiful stone path with fantastic views of Patzcuaro lake throughout! Carry water. Take sunglasses or hat. Wear comfortable shoes. Optional to climb the 422 steps to the upper viewpoint which has not much of a view, just good exercise from all the stair climbing!

Pizza restaurant
Located in the heart of Patzcuaro's downtown, Restaurant Bigoli is a fabulous establishment with an incredible chef. The pizza they serve is truly delectable, and their home salad offers a delightful blend of flavors. The pasta dishes are loved by children and the live music performances featuring opera singers create an unforgettable experience. A visit to this restaurant is a must, as their breakfast options are equally delicious. While the menu variety may be limited, each dish is expertly prepared and presented.
Delicious breakfast. It's menu variety is small but every dish is well served and prepared.
Javier G — Google review
My drink was lovely and presented beautifully by the waiter. My lasagne however was very poor. It was a wet lump in the middle of the plate topped with watery mince over the top. There was no topping, no extras and not even a tiny garnish. I’m not sure this lasagne even touched a tomato. No care was taken with making this plate. They charge 205 pesos for that one big spoon full of food.
Vie — Google review
The pizza here is a stone oven style pizza with a nice crunch to it and great flavor. The breakfast here is equally as excellent and does not disappoint. The only thing lacking here is service. Our wait staff didn’t write down our order either time we went and messed up the order both times we visited. Hoping they can write things down in the future so as to not have this issue as the food was excellent.
Brandyn H — Google review

I'm incredibly satisfied with the meal at Doña Paca Restaurante. The restaurant offers a delightful ambiance, with a romantic setting that includes a fountain and tree in the center of the outdoor seating area. They also have indoor seating options available. The service provided by the waiters was prompt and exceptionally friendly. Moreover, the food they serve is outstanding, prepared with great skill in the traditional Michoacan style. I will definitely return to this exceptional establishment.
The food was tasty and the service was incredible and it was still well priced for what it is. The garden is beautiful but it was chilly to sit outside

We have now eaten here twice and have been very impressed on both visits. The courtyard table area is a lovely space, the service is first rate and the food is fantastic. The menu offers a wide range of options from the local traditional cuisine. All the dishes have been very flavorful and unique from each other.
Greg D — Google review
This is the second time I have been at this restaurant. I appreciate the cozy and lovely atmosphere. The food is very good. I especially enjoyed the chilaquiles for breakfast. The coffee was delicious. I am Italian and people need to realize that in the Latin culture, such as Italy and Spain, when a waiter takes your order and then delivers your food they leave you alone and will not come back unless you ask them to. This is a custom in Italy and Spain, and I guess it is in Mexico as well. I prefer it to a waiter coming to you every few minutes asking "is everything ok?" while you have a mouth full of food. This place is very relaxing with delicious food. They give you time to enjoy a leisurely meal with family and friends and do not try to rush you out the door like in the US. I will be returning.

Restaurante Don Rafa is undoubtedly the most affordable choice in town. The overall quality of food in Patzcuaro is average, overpriced, and served in small portions. This unfortunate outcome stems from the influx of tourists to the area. For a safer option, Restaurante Don Rafa offers the best cuisine, which can also be found at local markets or street vendors.

I had chilaquiles verde the first time, and they were wonderful. Today I had chilaquiles rojos. They were still good, but not as good as the chilaquiles verde. Don Rafa looks like a small restaurant, that is until you go up to the second floor. Great location near Plaza Chica.
Ariel K — Google review
It is without any doubt the best value in town. Overall the food in Pátzcuaro is very mediocre, very expensive, and the portions are tiny. It is the unfortunate consequence of the huge flow of tourists to the town. The best food is to be found either in the markets or among the street vendors, but if you want to play it safe, this place is your best choice.

The staff at Restaurante La tradicion de Apatzingan were extremely accommodating to customers with strict vegetarian/vegan/plant-based dietary preferences, willingly adjusting the menu as needed. Despite the great view, service is very slow. We also asked the server to move an unused heater closer as it was a cool evening. He advised there were no working heaters available - then not more than 45 minutes later turned on the heater to provide another table with 2 heaters.... Food portions for pricing isn't going to give you the best value for your money. Average wait time when ordering a drink was around 20-25 minutes at a time. You're going to enjoy the street food a million times better.....

Nestled just around the corner from Hotel Casa del Naranjo, Lupita Restaurant is a beloved spot among locals, known for its extensive menu and laid-back vibe. Diners can choose to sit indoors or enjoy the vibrant open patio adorned with colorful decor and comfortable equipale chairs.
We only had a few hours in Patzcuaro and this restaurant came highly recommended, so we thought we would give it a shot. The service was excellent, our server was friendly and attentive and checked on us throughout the meal. Before we ordered we were given tortilla chips and a very fresh (and very spicy) pico de Gallo. It was excellent. We used to take getting chips and salsa for granted at Mexican restaurants in the States, but it is a rare treat here in Mexico. I ordered the Arrachera steak. It was accompanied with guacamole, beans, a pepper stuffed with panela cheese, and grilled onions. The steak was cooked perfectly and all of the sides were excellent. My wife ordered the coconut shrimp. They were delicious and so huge my wife couldn't eat them all (a good deal for me). Her shrimp were served with a Mexican rice. We hope to be able to spend more time in Patzcuaro and when we do, we will definitely go back to Lupita's.

J W — Google review
It had been quite a while since we have dined at Lupita's, so it was time for a revisit. It was a very nice experience overall. My limonada mineral was perfect. Chips and salsa on the table were a much appreciated touch. I ordered the pozole which turned out to be the green style. This dish was good, though nothing to write home about. The pork in the dish was just the pure low fat carne with none of the other "interesting" parts of the animal you find in more typical servings of pozole in this region. Because of this, the dish lacked a certain amount of richness. My wife got the salmon and rice salad which she enjoyed quite a bit.
Greg D — Google review
The food and service are consistent. Nothing to Wow about, but haven't been disappointed, either. The trout with dill was yummy, and they have very good Chiles en Nogada around Independence Day.

The Museo de Artes e Industrias Populares, situated in Patzcuaro, Mexico, is a must-visit attraction that offers a glimpse into the art, crafts, and tools of the Purépecha people. Housed in a 16th-century building that was once an ancient university, this museum is a treasure trove of the region's cultural heritage. It features an extensive array of locally crafted objects and artworks that beautifully reflect the fusion of indigenous and Spanish influences.
Beautiful museum that’s well worth the entrance price! One of the museum workers even guided me around to each of the 12 rooms to explain the history of the town and Purépecha indigenous culture. Amazing art on display. I learned so much!

What an awesome place to spend the morning! There was so much history to see. Going here really shaped my initial (albeit rudimentary) understanding of Mexico’s past and history. I highly recommend visiting this museum. Download Google Translator or attend with a guide to get the full experience!
Charlye T — Google review
This excellent museum has no signs advertising what's inside and if its closed the ere is no way to know what is inside or what the opening hours are. This oversight is absurd and frustrating because inside were is a superb collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts and explanations (in Spanish only) of the history of this area. Someone needs to stick a sign on the door to do themselves a favor.

This place is a gem, bigger than you think it’s going to be, even a little archeological site out the back. Don’t forget to look at the floors? You do have to pay to go in but $60 MX is not going to break the bank. Oh and everything is in Spanish! so use google translate and learn a bit.

La Escalera Chueca is an adorable establishment that combines traditional and modern elements in its decor. The cuisine is delicious and reasonably priced, making it a great option for both meals and drinks. Their appetizer selection is impressive, and the breakfast offerings are flavorful with generous portions. The customer service is exceptional, ensuring a satisfying dining experience. While the menu mainly focuses on traditional regional dishes, it may not be as innovative as some other restaurants in the area.
Cute place, very traditional decor with a touch of modern! Food was very good and reasonably priced. We were there for drinks one night and their selection of appetizers is quite good. Breakfast the next day; large portions, tasty food and excellent customer service. 👍

Great space with quality food and service. Traditional regional cuisine based menu, but not as creative as some other places on the plaza. We enjoyed it.

Unfortunately I did not have a good experience. I ordered "pulpo a la diablo " that on the menu came in a bed of mashed potatoes with grilled asparagus. I received the octopus in a bed of rice, with broccoli and green beans on the side. I complained and they made it right but with some inedible, fiborous aspargus. The octopus was rubbery, realy unworthy of the $300 pesos asked for the meal.

Horrible experience! A piece of glass was in my Fathers dinner plate, luckily he was able to feel it in his mouth before swallowing. Also the chef tried to say that my Father put the glass there on purpose. Unbelievable.

The menu is extensive, with traditional and modern options to please all tastes. The facilities are charming, spacious, of good taste, combining modern with baroque and traditional. (Translated by Google) I loved the place, we ate in the doorway so I didn't see the interior. The place is very comfortable, the tables and chairs too. There are not many street vendors, you eat calmly and the food is very good. Among those of us who ate there we tried Tarasca soup, churipo and carnitas with guacamole. The churipo and the Tarasca soup are very good. They have no objection. The carnitas were good but when they started to cool they became very hard. Difficult to chew. They recommended the seafood molcajete. I only saw it on another table. It looked good. The treatment of the waiters is very good. Very attentive and friendly. I loved the place. Very rich coffee. No tienen objeción.

(Translated by Google) This restaurant is located at the south portal of Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, far from the busiest arcades and street stalls, which allows you to enjoy the terrace and relax. Inside, the place is also comfortable. The menu is not extensive, but it has the basics of local food and something more. A snack of cueritos that was seasoned with orange juice and pickled vegetables especially caught my attention. Something especially good. The charales are also extraordinary and the service is excellent.
