Beaches
Hokitika Beach Sign is a must-visit landmark in the charming town of Hokitika, located on New Zealand's South Island. The town offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, with stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and breathtaking sunsets. While many visitors come for the magnificent gorge, there's much more to explore in Hokitika.
If you are staying in Hokitika, it is definitely worth it to have a stroll at this beautiful long beach. Especially around sunset is a great time to come here as this beach is orientated to the west. The beach is very clean. The sign of Hokitika in wooden sticks is super iconic.
Stephen — Google review
Absolutely awesome beach! Clean sand, clear water, and a super relaxing vibe. The sunset was stunning and the whole atmosphere felt peaceful and refreshing. A perfect spot to unwind — loved every moment ☺️
Arjun B — Google review
Hokitika’s beach is rugged and beautiful, lined with rocks, crashing waves, and plenty of driftwood shaped by the sea. The highlight is the famous “HOKITIKA” driftwood sign, a creative landmark and a must-stop photo spot. Walking along the sand, you’ll find driftwood scattered everywhere and may even try spotting pounamu (greenstone), treasured by the Māori as a protective stone. It feels like a small treasure hunt, adding charm to the stroll. We also noticed locals arranging wood and stones into messages like “HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025,” giving the beach a creative, personal touch. The best moment comes at Sunset Point, where people gather to watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea. The driftwood letters glow golden, the sky turns deep orange, and the atmosphere feels calm yet unforgettable. A must-visit stop on New Zealand’s West Coast.
Vincent L — Google review
Sign needs fixing but still nice stop. War pillbox was even better to see.
Exploring M — Google review
Such a cute set up of the sign, beautiful to have some food in the car park or sit on the rocks and enjoy the scenery.

Amazing, magical Oceanside village! Visited in the winter.

Cafe
Stone Oven Bakery Cafe & Asian Grocery Store, formerly known as Preston's Bakery, relocated to Revell Street in 2005 and underwent a name change. The establishment prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients to create handcrafted pastries and savories for both locals and visitors. The cafe boasts a charming old-style ambiance with a bakery on one side and a sit-down eatery on the other. Customers can enjoy flavorful coffee and an array of bakery pies and pastries.
If I get the chance when in a new town, I would check out the local cafe or bakery. I was lucky because this establishment had both. From the number of locals and tourists,I could see its popularity. Ordering my usual big breakfast, I knew what to expect from my past experiences. Everything I ordered was fast, hot, and delicious 😋 . Staff were excellent and efficient at clearing and taking orders for the next patrons. Atmosphere and cleanliness was spot on.
Tai R — Google review
We visited Stone Island Bakery after reading its positive reviews. It is a bright and welcoming bakery with an enthusiastic team. The bakery offers a selection of freshly baked goods, although the shelves were not fully stocked when we arrived-likely due to being busy-including breakfasts, pastries, and a variety of breads. Unfortunately, this is probably the lowest rating we have given an establishment during our 10-day stay in New Zealand. Our food took a long time to be served, and we were still waiting for our coffee after finishing our meal, while other guests who arrived after us were served promptly. The creamy mushroom soup we ordered was more starchy than creamy and tasted processed. The cheese scones were served with cream and preserves. The only saving grace was the mushroom and cheese toasties and the coffee. The bakery is popular and can get busy, its probably better to grab something to go than to dine in.
Hock C — Google review
Got the pasty and butter cookies. Pasty was okay. Butter cookies were really nice with fine crumbs, similar to Asian style that use icing sugar instead of regular.
Paul C — Google review
Amazing little café, food was a decent amount, bread on the breakfast is a good size. Definitely recommend this place will be coming back

Absolutely love the Stone Oven Bakery Cafe in Hokitika! They have a fantastic range of food, both from the cabinet and the menu – something for everyone. The staff are always welcoming and super friendly, which makes the whole experience even better. The location is great with plenty of seating options, whether you want to sit inside or enjoy the vibe outside. Highly recommend the Bacon Buttie – it’s a must-try! And the coffee? Top notch. Definitely one of my go-to spots when in town.

Thickest softest bread I've ever had. The food was amazing and large portions. The coffee was so good we also got a take-away too. The staff were very friendly too.
Teena C — Google review
Great food, got a steak and cheese pie and a cream donut first visit....Unlike most Auckland bakeries...their pies actually has steak pieces in it...not just a little cheese and some gravy.....The cream donut....that was the best cream donut I have ever eaten...it's worth going to Hokitika just to try one, loads of cream, jam in the entire inside of the donut, and the donut its self....fluffy, yet chewy, with a slight crisp outer that is covered in what tasted like a cinnamon sugar....The next day I had bacon and eggs on toast...Thick, perfectly toasted toast, eggs and bacon cooked perfectly....and I had 2 cream donuts..The service was friendly, polite and professional.....the bakery is clean and bright. The plates and cutlery were spotless....A true 5 star place.

My daughter had a wonderful birthday. We are so thrilled with our lovely evening. Fabulous waitresses, delicious food, a wonderful atmosphere and other customers sang Happy Birthday to my daughter. It really meant a lot to all of us. Thank you to all of the staff and other customers there tonight. 🥰😃

I’ve had mixed experiences here within a week. The weekend chef is great, cooks a fantastic steak. The weekday chef is terrible, overcooks your steak and undercooks the chips. The front of house staff were understanding and did not charge me for the poorly cooked steak meal. I happily paid for the perfectly cooked steak meal a few days beforehand. Good spot for a drink at the end of the day. Dine at your own peril. Plenty of indoor seating. Some outdoor seating. Dog friendly outside.
Steph W — Google review
It was OK. Not particularly excellent. The pork spare ribs felt slightly dry. The sauce tasted good but could be slightly more savour. Also had seafood chowder for one lunch. If there is an option to spice up a bit it would be perfect. But overall a great family restaurant. It is the best place I recommend in Hokitika.
Luis L — Google review
We have ordered seafood chowder, Moroccan lamb salad and roasted pork belly. The chowder was great, lamb was a bit too oily. Service was great tho, and atmosphere we came in the Sunday evening and it wasn't overloaded. Would recommend if you want a nice dinner

Pizza restaurant
Restaurant
Fat Pipi Pizza is a popular eatery located in Hokitika, New Zealand. It's known for its delicious pizzas and opens at 5 PM. The cafe has a diverse menu that attracts guests after visiting nearby attractions like Sock World & Sock Knitting Machine Museum. It's ranked as one of the top cafes and coffeehouses in the area, offering a great dining option for visitors exploring the cool little town of Hokitika.
During our visit to Hokitika, we dined at Fat Pipi Pizza, and it did not disappoint. This cozy little spot has earned quite a reputation, and we were excited to try their offerings. Food & Menu We ordered the renowned Whitebait Pizza and another pizza (unfortunately, the name slipped our minds). The Whitebait Pizza lived up to the hype — it was unlike any pizza we’ve had before, a true West Coast experience. The crispy, golden crust provided the perfect base for the delicate flavor of the whitebait, and it was topped with just the right amount of seasoning to enhance the fish without overpowering it. It felt both simple and sophisticated, a perfect tribute to local ingredients. The second pizza was equally impressive, with fresh toppings and a well-balanced flavor. The crust was thin and crisp but held the toppings without becoming soggy, a mark of a well-made pizza. Both pizzas were generously portioned, ensuring we left satisfied. Atmosphere & Service The atmosphere at Fat Pipi is casual and inviting. We sat outside, enjoying the seaside air and the laid-back West Coast vibe. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. They even checked in to see if we were happy with the whitebait pizza since it’s such a specialty item — a nice personal touch. Price & Value We found the prices reasonable, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. The pizzas were more than enough for two people, and we appreciated the thoughtful preparation. The unique nature of the whitebait pizza alone makes it worth the visit. Final Thoughts Our experience at Fat Pipi Pizza was fantastic. The combination of a relaxed vibe, local flavors, and great service makes this place a must-visit in Hokitika. If you’re in the area, definitely give the Whitebait Pizza a try — and maybe write down the names of all the pizzas you order!

Really Good Pizza, Liked sitting out the back near the beach to see the sunset and take some photos of the drift wood Hokitika sign near by while waiting. Benches might need to be bolted down a bit better though.
Ben R — Google review
The staff was very friendly during the order process. There are many options available, as well different sizes. The pizza was quite tasty, but what was bothering was that inside it was so cold. It was uncomfortable to really enjoy the food while it was so cold, and therefore the atmosphere was not great.
Stephen — Google review
The please and service were nice enough. I was recommended this restaurant by many people. I was quite disappointed by the pizza. The pizza dough itself you can tell is pre-made or frozen. Which really took away from what could have been a really great pizzza
Matthew L — Google review
Awesome experience! Loved all the quirky art work and decorations. The pizza is fantastic. Lots of flavour, and loaded with toppings. Would highly recommend.
Dawn G — Google review
Delicious pizza, friendly folks, nothing more you can ask for.
Gabriel — Google review
Fat Pipi make one of the best pizzas I have ever eaten - and I have eaten lots of them all around the world (including many in Italy ;) Thin and crisp base and baked exactly to the point. You can taste the high quality ingredients even in the base! And further, they have THE BEST vegetarian pizzas I ever had. "The punk" is such a nice, funky but fitting combination of toppings, you can tell the people of Fat Pipi do it with thoughts and love. "Amigo" is also very nice. While many other restaurants just throw random vegetables on their "veggie" pizzas - they do it differently here! Shame it is so far from my home. And if you wondered - no - I don´t get paid for this review ;)

I've eaten here over a number of years when visiting Hokitika and without fail the food is fantastic. Freshly made, good variety of options and the staff were very friendly. I would always recommend a visit to Fat Pipi Pizza when friends / family are traveling to Hokitika

It's a popular spot for both locals and tourists, especially after visiting nearby attractions like Sock World & Sock Knitting Machine Museum.
Hands down one of the best fresh sandwich I ever had. The bread is freshly made, and all the ingredients are locally sourced and very fresh. The sauces and seasoning are great. We really enjoyed them. Would strongly recommend it. Enjoy all!

Great staff. Very nice and energetic. We got “The Beef” full and “The Chicken” half as well as coffee. Price was on the high end but the sandwiches were excellent and very tasty. The chicken was ordered without cheese and they offered to add more meat as a replacement so very happy with that offer. Highly recommended.
ODIN — Google review
Wonderful ambience, great range of sandwich options in two sizes (half loaf $12 and full loaf $23). I chose the coaster and it was absolutely delicious. So pleased we came here.
Fiona B — Google review
These sandwiches are fantastic. I tried the half Italian and it was so good I ordered a second sandwich and tried the half New Yorker. Both had the perfect ratios of bread to meat to toppings to sauce. Portion sizes were great and the local kiwi we were sitting next to commented on me ordering a second one and said “we don’t often see someone who isn’t filled by just one”. We will absolutely return if we are ever in Hokitika again.
Jordan L — Google review
Great service and sandwiches. Staff were kind and offer to split our half sandwich for us for ease of sharing. The tea was unique and quite memorable part of our short visit to Hokitika.
Paul C — Google review
Fresh bread, freshly sliced ingredients and delicious combinations. I travelled from Aus to Christchurch to Hokitika to Frans/Fox and all the way back and made sure to hit up this place both times I passed. I ordered the beef the first time and the Italian (my fiancé ordered the chicken) on the second visit. I am devastated my new favourite sandwich shop is 2500km away. Make sure to visit these guys on your way past, they do not disappoint.

Dulcie's Takeaways, nestled in the scenic West Coast, is a must-visit for seafood lovers. While they don't have a traditional menu, you can indulge in delightful options from nearby eateries like Saigon Star Vietnamese Restaurant and Savoury Japan. Picture yourself savoring their renowned fish and chips—fresh blue cod with a crispy batter that truly captures the essence of New Zealand’s coastal cuisine. The generous portions make it an ideal choice for a casual meal by the sea.
Best fish and chips we have ever had. Crispy batter on the fish and delicious chips. Just amazing.
Penny F — Google review
Not the friendliest to tourist I supposed and the fish portion was kinda small (not sure if it’s cause of the type of fish we got). It was quite oily as well and the batter wasn’t as nice as some others we tried.
Kah T — Google review
The best fish and chips we’ve had in New Zealand. Good portions of fish, good batter and the blue cod tasted fresh and meaty. Chips were good but…still not as good as a UK chippie. This seems to be a NZ chippie theme, they’re like McCain oven chips. We took a short walk up the road and ate on the stationary boat, overlooking the sea. Perfect.
Genevieve S — Google review
Food was great, cooked well, and very tasty. The service was a tad on the slower side, and they were somewhat busy, so wait time was long too, but we filled in the time with a walk down the side of the river.
Daryl L — Google review
Best fish n chips I've had in a looooong time. The fish was thick, the chips were so nice. Sat in the car, on a rainy evening at the beach, with it wrapped in newspaper like the good old days ❤️ Daughter had a vege burger and liked it too
Sarah M — Google review
Disappointed in the size of the blue cod for the price, chips were good. Not very tourist friendly atmosphere, the staff felt standoffish and weren’t helpful in navigating the menu. Received an eye roll after asking to buy ketchup as an after thought when we collected the order.
Izzy A — Google review
Do not buy a burger from this place. I had a cheese burger and chicken burger. Cheese burger was disgusting! Gagged and spat it out straight away. The “meat” pattie was absolutely disgusting. It was either off or dog food. Mind you, I don’t think I’d even feed it to a dog to be honest. Chicken burger was severely lacking in anything good. Chicken burger was literally one chicken pattie, some lettuce that had turned to mulch and a tiny bit of onion with a quarter squirt of tomato sauce. Will not be going back to this place again
Michael A — Google review
It's great if you loved everything fried! We tried the blue cod, hoki, wedges and fries, and being small eaters, my partner and I could have done without the fries. Not much of a difference between the blue cod and hoki in my opinion, except the texture was finer for the blue cod.

Got the butter chicken and garlic naan. Tasted like tomato chicken, lack in flavour and lack in meat. $6 garlic naan lacked in flavour also, tasted like plain naan with bits of garlic scattered on it. After I told others about it I was told that Priya has gone downhill which is a shame as I did enjoy coming here many times ago. Hopefully Priya will get better again, fortunately my toddler will enjoy the tomato chicken.

Good food and service. Started off with chai and samosas. The chai was strong and samosas were crispy and tasty. Veg jalfrezi and paneer butter masala had a balanced taste and freshness to it. Great experience overall.

3 consumers 1 review Consumer 1 - Extremely flavorless butter chicken, quite disappointed. Lots of water pooling up at the bottom of my bowl, have not had this issue before. Consumer 2 - Ordered the chicken Tikka misala was seriously average verry bland and have never had a garlic nann bread taste like a budget white bread with the smallest hint of garlic was over priced and massively disappointing I love curry but can safley say I will never visit this establishment again. Consumer 3 - waiste of money threw $30 in the bin should of cooked my own curry

Great place for dinner, relaxing atmosphere. There are an open terrace and inside tables available. It was 3 of us and we've ordered catch of the day and chef-cooked steak, the fish was a bit dry, fries were lacking seasoning, bit the steak was amazing. To summarize it's a great place to have meat but not for seafood. Not the worst experience

Serendipitously dropped by here for dinner as the other place we had intended to go was full. The food was good - lamb had no gamey smell, and the meat and seafood platters were plenty for sharing, at a very reasonable price. We definitely expected to pay more because it was a hotel’s restaurant, but ended up paying less than we did in other restaurants during our trip. The service staff were also very friendly and attentive to our needs. Great experience overall!

Seafood chowder, mussels and catch of the day were absolutely delicious. There’s room for improvement for the apple crumble - crumble was not sweet enough and apple not sour enough, it would also be better without the whipped cream.

Thatcher & Small is a trendy and popular restaurant in Hokitika that offers a unique interior space with comfortable seating and stylish decor. The menu features delicious food, including the highly recommended Eggs Benedict and their namesake beer on tap. The staff are hospitable, providing attentive service in a clean and tidy environment. While the prices may be considered somewhat high, many find the experience to be worth it.
We are tourists who come here for a quick breakfast, don't expect much in terms of food taste or space here. However, we were pretty surprised with the interior space decorated in a very unique style, each corner is a special style. The store has a large space, comfortable seats, they even decorate the floor. Here's suitable for chill out at all times of the day,Yeah! The taste of the food is also great. Unfortunately we didn't have time to enjoy the drinks and many other dishes on the menu. We will back next time. See you!

Very nice thank-you. Food was delicious 😋 beautifully presented and very tastie. Best restaurant in Hokitika. Definitely go and enjoy the experience. Outdoor seating and a great slice and cake fridge.

Coffee is great, food was great. Service rubbish. Took them over 30 mins to make a muesli, asked twice where it is and they kept saying it’s coming. We had people come and go sitting all around us ordering meals eating and leaving while we sat waiting… just admit it you forgot our meals

Went there for a late breakfast. Eggs Benedict! Staff were very nice and the food very delicious. Never had better eggs Benedict. The flat white was good, just a hint too bitter for my taste. But saying that, I usually have heaps of milk in my coffee. I definitely recommend this cafe. One of the best we have in Hoki! Prices are ok. Not cheap nor expensive!

Trendy new restaurant in Hokitika. Service was very attentive, the food top notch, and their namesake beer on tap was delicious. Enjoyed the ambience and overall experience. Food is pricey, but I am yet to find anywhere in NZ that isn't, but this was worth the expense.

We stopped in for coffee and a cake mid afternoon. What a brilliant place! Great look and feel with really nice folks serving. Coffee was awesome and cakes even better. Was very cool they had small size options for the cake as it was great to choose big or small servings. Worked well for my wife and I. Would love to try something from the main menu in the future. It looked great too.

The eggs bennies at Stella Cafe were delicious 😋 As were the smash avocados on toast. We would recommend Stella's for breakfast, brunch and lunch. The live bee hive was an added cool item to the place!

Had a wonderful meal here. The staff were so hospitable. The food was fantastic. The service was great. The Cafe was clean and tidy. Obviously a popular place as it was very busy. Only downfall.....it's not in Tauranga. Make the most of it NZ.

One of the best meals I’ve had travelling along the West Coast. Amazing presentation, attentive service, delicious flavours and beautifully plated. An unexpected gem in Hokitika and while I don’t usually eat in the same place twice I would have if I stayed more than 1 night.

All the dishes was wonderfully prepared. The presentation is great and taste even better. Kudos to the chef. The service staff was warm and friendly. We had dinner followed by breakfast the next day. The clam chowder was especially superb.

Kitchen Hokitika is amazing. We had the bbq ribs and the fish tacos, and we couldn’t finish either of them. The food was delicious and the atmosphere cheery. Great place for solid kiwi tucker.

While I cant say I've visited every eating establishment in Hoki, after eating at "Kitchen" I'm not sure I need to. What a great place ,has a nice vibe about It, and the food ,oh the food, so good. I had the stuffed Kumar, just delicious.

Nice spot and very friendly staff. Food and coffee came out and was beautiful. Adults thought it was really tasty but the kids thought it could have been better. Overall a great way to start the day.

After a quick scout around town this is definitely the most buzzing place at 2pm on a Wednesday on a drizzly Winter day! Highly rate the seafood chowder and pate. Lovely and cosy inside and lovely staff! Easy 5 stars!

Started with morning coffee which was excellent. Came back for an evening meal. Well presented and very tasty. Jim is a very friendly welcoming host and run this hidden gem well. I would recommend booking for weekends as this place will hopefully do well.

Loved this amazing kitchen. Staff were super friendly and accommodating. The place is deceiving when u walk in it seems small but there is so much space even upstairs. Loved the brick walls, bookcases and art. The food was like fine dining but at reasonable prices. Best coffees. We went for breakfast and dinner. U gotta go here when you come to Hokatika. We had the fish and the steak.

Day 2

Southwest side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the southwest side side of town. Start the day off with West Coast Tree Top - Zipline South Island, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Hokitika Westland isite Visitor Information Centre. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Located in the South Island, West Coast Tree Top - Zipline offers a thrilling experience amidst nature. Visitors can explore a 20-meter-high canopy walkway over mature rimu trees and enjoy panoramic views of the coast, lake, and forest. The site features a spiral viewing tower, cafe, and souvenir shop for visitors to relax and take in the surroundings. Additionally, there is a 425-meter double zipline that provides an exhilarating adventure through the treetops.
Great walk around the tree line, I have vertigo so was a challenge for me and the walk way does have a bounce to it. But the views are a must see. The walk should only take around 45 minutes but could be up there for more time. Especially going up to the top of the tower, which anyone who loves adrenaline and thrilling activities can zip line from the tower down to the entrance for a extra cost, This was not for me and couldn't even attempt the tower climb due to my vertigo. But a must do if your in Hokitika, West coast.

This is a place where you can walk while looking at the great view from high trees. It is a place where you can walk along the course made at the top of the tree (about 25 meters high). If you go up a little past the ticket booth, you will see the tree top walking starting point, and it takes about 20 minutes to look around the entire course. The course is not long, but you can see the great view from high up and see various birds in nature. (It is not easy to find or see.) There is an observation deck at the midpoint of the course, and if you go up to this observation deck, you can see the sea across the forest. Overall, the great view and the unique experience of walking on a tree top are great, but since these courses are 25 meters high, the installed bridge shakes a little every time you walk, so if you have a fear of heights, I recommend you think again, and you do not necessarily need a reservation for this experience. There is no problem even if you just go without a reservation.
Edward F — Google review
We got a deal online, so ticket price was halved, so we did zipline & walkway combo. All the staff were SUPER helpful and friendly. Zipline was fun and felt very safe with all the checks .
Carol J — Google review
We had a great time here. Very quiet as out of weekend/holiday so cannot comment on how it would be the other side of that coin! Clearly signposted from the highway, Friendly and helpful staff. The walk was great, lots of education along the way if you can handle the heights for long enough! Climbing the tower was great too with exceptional views, we even timed it to watch some people do the Zipline (which looks awesome by the way, next time!!). Would very much come back and my girlfriend who has vertigo, enjoyed it too.... The walkway was as solid as you could hope and she appreciated conquering her fears enough to experience being within the tree canopy. Well worth the trip and money
Brendan F — Google review
It'd be better on a clear day but a foggy forest isn't too bad. Quite pricey for a walk but the staff were friendly and overall felt very safe.

Month ago I decide to move in the west cost and had big issue with the weather the day after, impossible for me to reach the location due the red allert and strong wind all way long the road from Christchurch, I’ve asked the owner gently for a refund due the issue or at least an agreement for some money back, no answer from him, didnt really care about my issue and just kept the money… well if this is your way of approaching with the clients… I understand business but an answer back to try to figure it out the issue would have been more then enough for me… but looks like the owner doesnt really care about it

I honestly don’t know how this place I still open, i was there last week and the service is bad, slow, disorganised. The curly haired young man was understanding and the other staff were unbothered. The wait for food is overly long and when our order arrived it was wrong and the whole place feels like it runs on excuses rather than effort. If you want to waste your time, money and patience, this is the place for you. Although there is a lovely view down the river.

Sunset Point

Sunset Point is a must-visit destination in Hokitika, New Zealand. It offers stunning views of the sunset and provides a tranquil atmosphere to enjoy the natural beauty. The area is well-maintained and has interesting historical significance related to shipwrecks. Visitors can take leisurely walks along the coast, indulge in delicious local food, and even bring their dogs for a stroll. However, it's important to be cautious around the water due to strong currents.
Beautiful place to spend sometime watching the ocean. The sea is a bit rough so not recommended to leave kids unattended. Plenty of people fishing in the area, but you are free to mind your own business. It seems to be a nice place to watch sunset, but we were there during daytime so I do not have anything to say about the sunset.

After a rainy and grey day, sunset point turned into a surprisingly beautiful gift of a sunset. Fantastic rugged beach filled with stones and black sand to enjoy the gift of a magnificent sunset.

Nice vibe of sunset revellers (human and wildlife). Limited parking, I can imagine no chance during holidays but worked for us on Sunday night Lots and lots of driftwood
Brendan F — Google review
Popular spot to stop to eat dinner/ lunch in the car. Also lots of dog walking. Whitebaiters trying to catch whitebait. A good walking track above the beach. Sunset was awesome.
Shirley D — Google review
It is one of the best places to view sunset. I brought my wife here to view sunset as a present for her on our anniversary. Initially, we wanted to buy takeaway from Dulcie's nearby to have a bite while waiting for the sun to set. Unfortunately it was closed. It seems like a nice place for the local to walk their dogs and have a stroll here.
Eric T — Google review
Windy but relaxing scenic attraction, personally think this is way better than the famous Hokitika Beach Sign. Here you can enjoy the undisrupted view of Hokitika River, the beach and the ocean, more importantly, the crowd here is way lesser. There's a shipwrecks memorial, also makes it a great photography location. Lots of parking available, wheelchair accessible toilets available as well.

The Hokitika iSite Visitor Information Centre is a one-stop shop for comprehensive and impartial information and booking services for Hokitika, Westland, and New Zealand. Visitors can get assistance with accommodation, activities, attractions, and travel bookings. The center's knowledgeable staff are praised for their helpfulness and good knowledge of the town. They can assist with making reservations over the phone as well.
We initially went in 18/2/2025, spoke to Kaytee who was very helpful & offered suggestions/ideas. We went back again and Kaytee was busy so we were dealing with another lady. Unfortunately, she wasn't as familiar with the planned booking so Kaytee stepped in. We found Kaytee to be very helpful & are glad we dealt with her. Overall, this iSite is good. Note that they recently moved & it was a bit confusing as the signage is still up at their old site (across the road).

Nestled in the heart of Hokitika, Clocktower Cafe is a delightful spot that promises to kickstart your day with its exceptional coffee and warm atmosphere. Known for its friendly staff and inviting ambiance, this cafe opens early, making it an ideal pit stop for adventurers looking to fuel up before exploring the stunning West Coast. Guests rave about their poached eggs on toast—a perfect breakfast choice!
Wonderful all day dining experience. We had lambs Fry for breakfast it was delicious. Or daughter had scrambled eggs cooked perfectly. Coffee was exactly how we like it. Highly recommend a visit and a meal
Mimpi H — Google review
I was on another pie reviewing mission ans I travel throughout NZ and I specifically drove to Hokitika to come to the Clocktower cafe because someone recommended it to me saying that had great pies. These are good quality pies, however they’re not the best pies I’ve ever had. The pies certainly are the authentic NZ homemade style pie, but with fairly generic flavours and small selection of flavours. With that said, I chose a steak and blue cheese, because it was the most unique pie flavour option. The pastry was perfect. I felt they had the pastry of the pie on point. It couldn’t be better. The steak inside the pie was slight dry, but not to an unbearable extent. The ratio of steak to gravy was perfect, the pie wasn’t too sloppy, and the gravy enhanced the flavour. The blue cheese was a great contrast of flavour. My only critique with regard to the cheese was that the cheese was only on one side of the pie, so one side of the pie was just the flavour of a steak pie. Thankfully, it was the second half of the pie that had the blue cheese and it was a lovely pop of flavour to end my pie consumption moment. The cafe itself is quite big, the decor is slightly dated in my opinion, but the cafe is fairly busy so I assume it’s popular with locals. The service from staff seems good. However, I was there when it was busy, so waited at the counter for a while to be served, and then waited quite a long time for my coffee. Overall I think this is a solid choice for a pie if you’re passing through, but no award winners here.

Good value for money. Staff was kind and service was fast. The atmosphere was a little bland.
Zayed P — Google review
Very disappointing experience unfortunately. The food was very below par for what we paid and the coffee was poorly made. Having a staff member discussing her friends affair at the table next to my family including young children made the meal uncomfortable.
Dan B — Google review
Without doubt, the best coffee I had on the West Coast and super friendly staff. The Clocktower Cafe opens early for your caffeine fix if you are off out to take photos, catch a fish or set off on an adventure. I can also highly recommend the poached eggs on toast as a tasty way to set you up for the day!
Fergus B — Google review
Passing through town and looking for somewhere for a decent breakfast and coffee? This place is great! Great pies also.

these are all of food we ordered. we waited 40 minutes while the Cafe is not busy. we have asked the staffs twice about the time to serve the food. finally, the lady said this is Cafe, not food serving Place, customers have to spend lots of time to wait for the food.this is awful answer for us. They are not respect people. Strong not recommend to this Cafe.

Chinese restaurant
Easteat Restaurant, also known as 唐小厨, is a delightful culinary gem located in Hokitika that promises an authentic taste of Chinese cuisine. This charming eatery offers a menu filled with flavorful dishes that transport diners straight to the heart of China. The Mongolian Beef stands out for its perfect balance of spice and flavor, making it a must-try for those who enjoy a bit of heat. Additionally, their dumplings are simply delightful and add to the overall experience.
We had a fantastic dining experience at EastEat Chinese Restaurant in Hokitika. We ordered Kung Pao Chicken, veggie fried rice, fried squids, and fried pork & prawn dumplings, and everything was absolutely amazing! The flavors were spot on, and each dish was cooked to perfection. Surprisingly, they charge $3 for chili oil, but I would highly recommend getting it—it adds a fantastic kick and enhances the flavors even more. We also ordered small portions of rice and noodles to accompany the dishes, and they complemented the meal perfectly. The food quality and taste exceeded our expectations, and we left extremely satisfied. Highly recommend this place if you're in Hokitika and craving delicious Chinese food!

Ordered Beef Hofun, Prawn Fried Rice, sizzling Chicken satay, chicken nuggets and prawn twisters. The flat noodles is a bit hard and not as good as the other Chinese restaurants. Service is good. All the rest of the food is good. Has an outdoor sitting so is good for when you have a dog with you.

We were craving for Chinese food and the food here have exceeded our expectations. Portion of food was a lot too. Felt that we have over-ordered for 2 people. The staff were very sincere and friendly. Highly recommend this place for good authentic Chinese food.

Was the only place serving lunch at 14:30 so we went for a lunch to this restaurant. Had very nice pan-fried pork and veggie dumplings. Beef brisket stew with tomatoes and a portion of steer fried chicken in oyster sauce. All food was good or very good. The spicy sauce they had went very well with the noodles and dumplings. The portions were generous. For the service you would have to ask for things (e.g. water) and there seems to be a slight language barrier, but, overall, we were very satisfied. Not sure why the rating is so low.

Such a great room. The setting is relaxed, the bedding is ultra comfortable, and everything was as expected. Wandered up to the restaurant for dinner and had a delightful meal. Couldn’t fault a thing. No stairs for old knees and the rental car enjoyed the more than ample car parking spaces - no chance of any dents.

Just had the strangest experience here. We are staying nearby and had read the excellent reviews of the restaurant. I tried calling to see if the restaurant was open for dinner but there was no answer; so we decided to take the short drive. We were essentially stopped at the door and told that the restaurant was “full”— even though there were many open tables visible. In fairness, we were dressed very casually, so maybe we weren’t dressed according to their dress code. But as someone who worked in hospitality for many years, it’s quite simple to tell someone kindly that they are not dressed appropriately. Being met at the door and hustled away was an unusual and rather offensive experience.

Great dinner at the restaurant. We started with drinks on the terrace, overlooking the field with lovely alpacas, all the way to the ocean. Then dinner, which was very nice. We ordered the lamb and the fish of the day. It tasted very nice, the wine suggestion was great, and the service was warm and very welcoming. We loved it and would warmly recommend it!!! Enjoy all!

A very kind mother/ daughter duo. It’s a small business and it feels good to support the local economy. You can see the sea and mountains in the background. Glow Worm Dell in Hokitika, New Zealand, is a natural wonder just a short walk from the road. It offers an easy opportunity to witness the incredible glow worms native to the area. The small area requires minimal walking and provides a chance to see these amazing little creatures come to life. Visitors are advised to bring a torch for the short walk through the dell at night. The glow worms are often described as beautiful fairy lights and can be seen almost immediately upon entering.
1 min drive /14 min walk from our hotel , parking place available right next to the entrance. We went at around 10pm . 30s walk to see hundreds maybe thousands of glow worm. Fantastically wow New Zealand experience❤️😍❤️😍🤩😍 Wonderful time spend( think we only stay for 20 mins ?) easy to access good for all age (18-90). To make sure not disturb the wildlife , we only bring 1 red light touch which point only on floor & use briefly for walking within our group. Highly suggest keep super quiet to respect the nature & other tourists & guests on site also taking pics .

As it was our second time seeing glow worms, after taking a tour on the north island, it was fabulous to see that this place shows glow worms in a natural environment and completely free! Just 1 minute walking from the parking, and you already see the amazing creatures. We came back when it was daylight as well, and was amazing to see how the environment is that they live in!
Stephen — Google review
Visited during the day to check out the place and then at night to see the worms. It only takes 2 to 3 minutes to find the glow worm at the end of the track. Switch off the lights to see them. It's pretty cool. Don't miss this spot if you're in the area.
N K — Google review
A lovely free attraction to stop off at and gaze upon some glowworms. A lot of people seem to go unprepared and shine their phone torches in search of them, but complete darkness or an infrared head torch is best. However, there is a BETTER alternative that you can visit by the Woodstock Hotel if you have the time. If you park up alongside the road and walk a few meters up, there is a sign to your right that points to a hidden glow worm dell. This one was much quieter, and it didn't have the fences that obscure photography. However it is important to be responsible and respectful of these creatures when you visit. You do have to duck under a small entry way to find them, so be mindful if you have any mobility issues.

Great little roadside attraction. Interesting to see in the day and night. I would recommend trying both. This is an undercut rock formation supporting a glow worm habitat. Amazing contrast at night between the glow worms and the Milky Way.

Need to go when dark. Feels like your in a fairy grotto! Its beautiful. 🧚‍♀️🪱🌿
Andrea B — Google review
A bit faint, but totally magical with glowworms surrounding you everywhere! But you have to come after nightfall to see them, of course. If you can, I recommend stopping by first during the daytime to see what everything actually looks like and then returning once the sun has set. Easy to find and well marked. Best bonus: Totally free too! :)

Discover the enchanting glow worm world at this hidden gem – it's free and fabulous! Stay as long as you want, capture your favorite moments, and soak in the magic. Plus, the nearby Seaview Lodge & Backpackers campsite has a convenient 2-minute walking track to this glow worm spot, making it a breeze to explore.

The National Kiwi Centre, located in the heart of Hokitika, is a wildlife center and freshwater aquarium showcasing native New Zealand animals. Visitors can witness the country's famous national bird, the kiwi, along with other unique creatures like the tuatara and giant eels. The center offers a special nocturnal house where guests can observe these fascinating animals up close. Additionally, there are opportunities to see West Coast creatures such as whitebait and crayfish.
Great place to stay entertained and busy! Loved all the tropical fish, NZ eels, NZ fish, kiwi, etc. You can even catch your own crayfish and release them back to their enclosure. Such a fun experience loved every second.
Brodie B — Google review
This was our only time that we were able to see the famous kiwi bird in New Zealand, and it was amazing! The rest of the centre is nice, but mostly oriented to children I would say. When we were there, there were some school groups there, and definitely fun for them. It was nice, but not sure if it was worth the price.

Went here with my partner & 3 year old. Great wee activity & place to visit especially while raining outside. Lots of interesting things to learn inside & our highlight was feeding the eels. The staff are lovely & kind. All look so happy to be there with positive energy towards each interaction! I would recommend this place to others
Kayla S — Google review
There is no more than the kiwis and all the introductions are so interested. We saw both of the kiwis and they are more cute than I imagined! Plus, feeding eels that needs courage was an amazing experience! The staff are so nice and patient. It was a wonderful day.

The male staff member behind the counter was very friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic! Really cool experience seeing a kiwi up close. I enjoyed myself and thought it was well worth the money. I highly recommend it!
Bradley W — Google review
This place is an absolute must! Definitely go at feeding time. The eels are really cool to feed and give a little pet after food time. The staff were great and very welcoming. Karen did the eel and kiwi feeding with us and has a wealth of knowledge about them. She provided us with some really awesome commentary. A lot more to do inside than I thought. Well worth the money. Highly recommended.

Must see for tourists. Very interesting experience with not just Kiwis on display. We only saw 2 kiwis, but many other species. Then there is feeding the eels, good fun for kids.

Front desk staff were great. Feeding time is the best time to go. Heardand watched a kiwi call and it made my day. Eels were massive and I can't remember the turtles name but he was a real character.

Nestled in the heart of Hokitika, the Regent Theatre stands as a testament to community spirit and dedication. Originally built in 1935, this stunning art deco venue has undergone a remarkable restoration over the past decade, thanks to the tireless efforts of local volunteers and experts from across New Zealand. Today, it serves multiple purposes: showcasing the latest films with cutting-edge digital projection and surround sound, hosting live performances, and functioning as a town hall for various community events.
Very sweet little cinema, super nice staff and very cozy. I was never in a cinema which had a room like a living room… 😍. Acoustic and sound was super as well as the screen.

When seeing the pictures of other reviews, I never expected that our movie would be displayed in a room with just a few sofas. Regardless, it was a very fun experience to watch the new Final Destination movie in this vintage-style theatre. It was like being transported back in time. Great experience!
Stephen — Google review
Gorgeous old theatre, a great place to play music if you are a musician or band on tour and passing through the west coast of the south island! Their greenroom below the stage was the best of our tour in the South Island with Jackie Clarke. Passionate and helpful custodians too... you'll love having a yarn! Good coffee and scones at the cafe too.

Great Cinema, lovely staff. Two Cinemas, one small with comfortable armchairs and sofas and the other large with old fashioned Cinema chairs. Popcorn, ice cream, the usual drinks and lollies available. Well worth it if your stopping in Hokitika.

This nostalgic theatre attracted my wife attention during our visit to New Zealand on the 28 July 2023 while we pass through Hokitika. She was amazed that such theatre still existed in such modern times and went in to have a peek. She ended up buying coffee and a scone before we headed towards Lewis Pass towards Hanmer Spring. She regretted that we did not stay long enough to enjoy this place by watching a movie here to reminisce the good old time.
Eric T — Google review
Cute classic old school theatre. Friendly staff, good coffee. My son watched his first ever movie in a theatre here , Paddington in Peru. He loved it. The best part I liked is that it's a classic theatre so not too loud and bright like the new theatres are. They can be quite frightening for a child. But this was good. Wanna watch a movie on the west coast , come visit :) and one last thing. Good butter popcorn 🍿 why watch the movie without it ? Enjoy

Absolutely loved our stay at the Hokitika Fire Station boutique accommodation! From start to finish, everything was spot on. The pre-arrival communication was excellent – we had all the check-in details well ahead of time, which made arriving super easy and stress-free. The location couldn’t be better – just a short stroll to the main street with all the lovely cafes, shops and restaurants. It’s such a convenient base for exploring Hokitika. Plus, the parking was great – plenty of space and right outside, which was a bonus. The rooms were amazing – spacious, stylish, and full of character with lovely touches that made it feel really special. The shower was brilliant too – strong pressure and plenty of hot water, which is always appreciated after a day out exploring. Honestly couldn’t fault a thing. Highly recommend if you’re heading to the West Coast. We’ll definitely be back!

Loved our stay here. We stayed in the wheelchair accessible apartment, which was perfect for us all and the features needed for wheelchair use. Location is great. Apartment has beautiful finishing touches, check in and use of all features super easy. Would have loved to stay another night and if I am ever back in the area will be sure to stay again. Highly recommended!!

This accommodation is outstanding. We stayed in the downstairs Chief Millard room with a lovely little outdoor area for your morning coffee in the sun. Everything in the rooms was so beautiful and lots of great touches, like the coffee machine. Bed was very comfy and the apartment was so warm. Service was amazing and they treated my partner to one of their T-shirts for his birthday. Definitely recommend and would stay again when back in Hokitika
Tracy K — Google review
Great restoration, fantastic location. Liked the room decor (Chief Millard). Two areas I would suggest for improvement: deadbolt on room door to further secure against unauthorized entry, and moving the bed to the living area instead. The bed in Millard was right at the door and staircase to the upper floor, and every step, movement up and down the stairs at night and in the morning woke us up. We could also hear the conversations in the hall.

Bonz 'N' Stonz Carving Studio offers the opportunity to design and carve your own unique jewelry piece under the guidance of a renowned local artist named Steve. Visitors have praised the accommodating hosts who were able to cater to a group of seven, including five children. The studio also accepts online orders and can mail commissions anywhere in New Zealand. Customers have expressed their satisfaction with the personalized service and the enjoyable experience of creating their own carvings.
We had a fantastic time carving jade. Richard was a great teacher who allowed us time to pick through all the rough pieces before shaping. We ended up with two pieces which we both treasure. I would heavily recommend the jade carving if you have a morning or day to spend in Hokitika.

Absolutely incredible! I came to bonz and Stonz because someone recommended it. I designed my own piece and even though it was very complicated for a first timer, I received such excellent help. Everyone (especially Steve and Richard) was so incredible, the whole team was just so nice and very knowledgeable.

I just had the most amazing Experience with Bonz n Stonz. I came in with an idea of a design and was told that it’s gonna be pretty hard for a beginner since the design was complicated and the stone might break. But Steve was a great teacher. It took us 6h and a lot of questions from my side but I walked out with the most amazing Necklace. The whole team was incredible whoever I ask got me an answer and help was alway provided. The atmosphere in shop was great, there was music playing, singing, coffee and great chats. Everyone was so supportive towards each other and their designs. Definitely one of the best things you can do on your travel. Thanks again for this incredible day.

This place cannot be recommended high enough and deserves all of the 5 stars! I started out with a nice Hei Matau for which I received excellent guidance. As I enjoyed it so much I also made Toki on the same day. In the evening I found some Pounamu on the beach a bit up north, and I had to get back and polish these pieces. I had a nice talk with Steve in the morning and decided to I make a nice stingray which turned out beautiful with all the helpful guidance! One of the best crafting experiences I ever experienced!

A top notch family activity. Great staff that helped with advice but let us do it ourselves. Cool results and a great activity we wouldn't have elsewhere. We unexpectedly ran into a friend from the north island here to.

Really enjoyed my time here. I was lucky enough to attend a workshop at Bonz n Stonz with Paul, he was very patient and helpful to me and my partner as we made our beautiful Pounamu necklaces. Amazing mural out the front of the shop representing our Maori culture. Tu meke
Chelsea — Google review
Creating my own pounamu at Bonz ‘n’ Stonz was one of the most meaningful and unforgettable experiences of my journey through Aotearoa. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and guided with warmth, care, and deep cultural respect. Thanks to T. and Steve, I didn’t just make a pendant. I lived a true Māori experience. They walked me through every step of the carving process with patience and passion, teaching me the meaning behind the shapes and the spiritual value of the stone. Jackie added the final touch by tying the traditional necklace binding with such care and attention, making sure everything was perfect. That moment truly sealed the spiritual value of the piece for me. The studio is a peaceful and inspiring space, and working with the stone felt almost meditative. Watching my design slowly take form, from a raw piece to a polished taonga, filled me with pride and gratitude. This is not just an activity. It’s a ceremony. A gift. A memory carved into stone. Ngā mihi nui to T., Steve, and Jackie for sharing your knowledge, your kindness, and a piece of your culture. I will carry this experience with me always.

Glass blower
Established in 1989, the Hokitika Glass Studio is a family-owned business that showcases glass-blowing skills passed down from Sweden and now practiced by local artisans. Visitors can witness the creation of stunning glassware at the working station behind the counter. The studio offers a wide range of blown and freeform glass pieces, each with its own unique story and process shared by the friendly owner.
What a wonderful shop this is. Many items have been purchased over the years, all unique. My husband has an ever increasing collection of penguins, yellow the latest. This time I bought a large platter, 2 tumblers, 2 cats and a shell. I have had items shipped, 2 red penguins made especially for our ruby anniversary, well packed and arrived safely. Kirsty and team, we'll be back!

Hokitika Glass Factory made a glass memorial for me. Kirsty was great to deal with and the Glass team did a great job incorporating the ashes.
Noel N — Google review
The glass pieces are absolutely beautiful and really well crafted, but I regret buying the set of 3 angel fish because of the terrible customer service. The staff were rude and unwelcoming, especially the older lady. It really takes away from the experience of purchasing something so special.
William C — Google review
I've seen other reviews commenting on the poor customer service, and unfortunately we've had the same experience. The three staff members deliberately ignored us from the moment we walked in and throughout the time spent here. Despite our obvious interest in their craft, the two male staff kept their backs to us the entire time we were there, and I had to repeat myself several times to ask them a question about their glass blowing (to which I received a one word reply without even a look in my direction). I understand that they are working, but the studio is set up in a way to actively demonstrate their trade and skills and if they don't want to engage with customers, I suggest that the open nature of the workshop should be moved behind closed doors. We were also quite unimpressed when the female staff member turned and walked away from us when we approached her to enquire about one of the items. It is a shame the staff are so rude and unwelcoming because the glass itself is actually stunning. The only reason we didn't purchase something was because of the poor attitude of the staff. I hope other visitors have a more pleasant visit.
Dwellster B — Google review
Lovely products, great to see the guys blowing glass. The woman behind the retail counter was cold and rude, though. I've heard that from a few people now. Something to work on.

Really rude lady working in the shop Saturday 14 June. A shame a popular attraction is tainted by an awful lady who needs to work on customer service. Perhaps in the wrong line of work. Won’t be returning unfortunately.

Korath Thai Cuisine is a popular dining option in Hokitika, New Zealand. Located close to the town's shops, it offers delicious Thai and Asian cuisine at reasonable prices. The restaurant has garnered positive reviews for its good food and hospitable staff. Situated in a historic town founded during the gold rush of the 1860s, Korath Thai Cuisine provides an excellent dining experience with its diverse menu and inviting atmosphere.

Dear H — Google review
I came in because of the reviews and want to support small local restaurant. When my order of vegetarian green curry came out, I was surprised about the liquidity of the curry sauce and stiffness of the vegetables served. I brought to the attention of the server and he summoned the manager, Rujira. She asked me what’s wrong with the dish, I shared with her my feedback. She wanted to see a picture of the creaminess of green curry that I had before from elsewhere. (What the heck if you are the professional?) She said that she can re-cook the dish to soften the vegetables and make the curry sauce creamier/thicker. I wanted to change to another dish or cancel it due to any possible backlash. She refused to change to another dish just for the reason that I don’t like it (it’s undercooked) or to cancel it as I know that they will not make it to par. When I had no choice, but to have them re-cook it, it came out to be half as much portion as before. (The second picture how the vegetables were still too hard that I had to set aside) She served the dish again and asked me if it’s ok. I said that I don’t know as I haven’t tried it yet. She literally rolled her eyes and walked away. I asked to bring I to go so I can cook some more at the place that I’m staying. If they want to live up to their reviews, they need to upgrade their craft. As an avid traveler and foodie, I consult heavily on reviews, I feel the need to share my experience with this restaurant tonight. As a customer, it was a huge disappointment. Furthermore, I would be personally ashamed of the manager’s/owner’s responses in handling customers feedback, either non-verbal or verbal. It is doubtful that the quality and customer service will improve to international-worthy standards. Best of luck to the manager/owner.

Absolutely worth the visit! Korath Thai Cuisine was super busy when we arrived – a great sign, and it didn’t disappoint. The staff were fantastic, handling the rush with a smile and great service. The menu has plenty of options to suit all tastes, and everything we tried was delicious. Highly recommend the sweet and sour – full of flavour and perfectly balanced. Takeaways were flying out the door, so clearly a local favourite too. Highly recommend!

The dishes were above average and definitely far from authentic Thai cuisine. I wouldn’t recommend if you look for authentic Thai food. Portions were generous. The restaurant was very busy with takeaway orders. The alcohol menu was great and reasonably priced. Probably 3.5 out of 5 for us…

Subway is a casual eatery where customers can customize their own sandwiches and salads, featuring options that promote wellness. It proved to be a convenient choice for a vegetarian meal during a visit to Franz Joseph. Although the service was slow due to limited staff, the quality of the sandwiches made up for it. The employees were courteous and professional, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. Moreover, the store provided ample free parking facilities.
Delicious sandwiches as always, and friendly service at this Subway.

This is the 2nd time I've got a salad. The 1st time they don't mix it. When I said what sauces they just made the salad so wet, that it was horrible. This 2nd time was tonight and my partner asked for it to be mixed up. But no it was just put on layer by layer. I never order sauces. Not sure if I will have another salad there again.

Pretty rough. I travel for my job and always stop at Subway as I like everything about the food chain. This one was rough. Not clean - like building supplies and old equipment stacked up against customer tables, the place just didn't seem clean. The quality was bad, the lettuce was well and truly past the best before. A lot of ingredients not available because they told me they didn't order any. They wouldn't listen to me when I answered their questions and would put the wrong stuff on or miss fillings. I went twice during my trip and both times the sandwich was poorly constructed. As soon as I picked it up everything just fell out. I'm pretty sure the sub I had for lunch today wasn't folded closed when they wrapped it.

Thatcher & Small offers a delightful culinary experience with a focus on exceptional food, complemented by a thoughtfully curated selection of craft beer, Allpress Coffee, and enticing cocktails. The restaurant invites guests to savor the blend of Hokitika's history and contemporary sophistication. Visitors have praised the Beef Wellington for its tender meat and flaky pastry, along with perfectly cooked chips.
We had dinner at Thatcher & Small on Easter Sunday and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. We’d made a reservation ahead of time (highly recommend doing so – it’s a popular spot!) and everything was smooth and well-organised when we arrived. The menu is wide-ranging with something for every appetite – from smaller bites to hearty mains – and the drinks list was just as impressive. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure we were well looked after without ever rushing us. Our food came out in great time, and the portions were generous too. They gave us just the right amount of time between courses, which made for a really relaxed and enjoyable evening. The garlic bread was absolutely delicious, and the steak was cooked perfectly – both are must-tries! There’s also a fully heated outdoor area which makes it a great option for larger groups no matter the weather. All in all, a great spot for a special meal out – we’d definitely visit again!
Gordon S — Google review
Our experiences turned out to be two extremes: Breakfast – good coffee and pancakes. Dinner – the worst Beef Wellington: completely overcooked beef, soggy pastry, bland vegetables and mashed potatoes. The “fish of the day” was just as bad — slightly cool fish and cold chips. Even after I told the staff how disappointing our mains were, they didn’t react or even offer an apology! We were a big group; some of our friends enjoyed their dishes like risotto and lamb…
Hannah Z — Google review
Thatcher & Small in Hokitika was a great dinner choice. The place blends a cozy bar vibe with restaurant-quality food and modern décor that still feels welcoming. We started with their house lager, crisp and refreshing, plus Salt & Pepper Squid and Arancini — both perfectly cooked and flavorful. For mains, the Pumpkin Risotto was rich and creamy with great texture, while the Lamb Shoulder was tender and well balanced with fries, salad, and mint yogurt sauce. The Beef Wellington and Fish & Chips were also spot on, with fresh ingredients and just the right amount of seasoning. Food, drinks, and service were excellent, and the relaxed atmosphere made it easy to unwind. After dinner, we walked to the nearby beach and caught the golden sunset — the perfect end to the evening. Highly recommended if you’re in Hokitika.

We really enjoyed our visit. Trish had the Eggs Bene and was impressed, the homemade Rosti was the highlight, and a relief after the one we had a couple of days ago in Franz. I had Sushi Bowl which I also enjoyed but maybe the Pull Pork was a little dry. We also got a few treats from the cabinet which also hit the spot. The only comment is that maybe the Carrot Cake could be more cake and less icing, maybe hold the middle layer.

The food was lovely! Personally loved the Thatchers Bene, it was delicious. The pancakes were a little disappointing though.

Had dinner at T & S and it was fantastic. The service was the stand-out... very prompt. Possibly even a little quick, but you couldn't say they weren't attentive. Food was lovely... I had the chicken liver parfait... delicious. My wife rated the salt and pepper calamari, although maybe a little salty as there are capers in the dressing. I had the Beef Wellington... very nice and very well cooked. I feel the sauce could do with a little sweetness, but that's being very picky. My wife's lamb shoulder was lovely. Kids loved their meals. Hopefully we'll be back sometime!

Beautiful interior and nice spot outside. Lovely staff and great food if you include the cabinet selection and the menu as can be limited on vegetarian options.

Beef wellington was a good menu. However at $40, I felt that price point was a bit too high. The beef wellington was cooked to perfection but the size of protein was a bit too small. Being newer, it had slightly quieter atmosphere which was great. The space between the table was a bit too narrow.

GATHERER wholefoods & bar is a hidden gem in Hoki, New Zealand, offering sensational food and drinks with exceptional service. The staff are accommodating to families and create a comfortable environment for all guests. Visitors praise the beautiful presentation and taste of the food, which easily matches or exceeds trendy American restaurants. The interior is thoughtfully designed, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Guests also appreciate the good selection of craft beer and cocktails available at this plant-based restaurant and bar.
Amazing food last night. Me and my partner went for dinner. Great service and lovely people that worked there! Good selection of craft beer too. The fried cauliflower was incredible, tasted just like fried chicken!

This place is one of the hidden culinary gems of NZ. It’s hard to believe you’re in little old Hoki when you see the beautiful presentation and taste the food these ladies produce in their tiny kitchen. Just had our second meal in 2 months, and it was sensational food, drinks and service on both visits. As a new mum with a baby in tow, the staff were great about having a wee one with us, and I felt really comfortable breastfeeding (something which not all establishments do well!!). This place needs hats... Cuisine if you’re reading this, I hope you visit soon

Popped in here on my wilderness trail, not knowing what to expect. I was blown away. The food and drink is some of the best I’ve had, plant-based or otherwise, and that’s having lived and having had quality plant-based food in Sydney, Vancouver, and Austin, where I now live. Would come back to the west coast just to have the Baja Tacos and dirty tonic Gins again. Loved it.

Must post about the amazing place we found for dinner last night. Gatherer - a plant based restaurant and bar with wicked food and a great drinks and cocktail menu as well. Awesome staff make you feel welcome.

Beautifully delicious dining in a fresh rustic setting with super friendly and passionate staff. One of the best restaurants in the area and that includes much more than Hokitika.

The food here is delicious. Something different .with the wole/ raw food approach Great coffee too. Funky eclectic place and lovely friendly staff.

Popped in for lunch on a Friday. Best gluten free food in the country. Every table was occupied, people waiting for tables, such is the high standard of food presented at this restaurant. Also encouraged to see 6 staff busy waiting on and cooking for the lucky patrons so great for the local economy. This is the best of the best.
