I’ve had mixed experiences here within a week. The weekend chef is great, cooks a fantastic steak. The weekday chef is terrible, overcooks your steak and undercooks the chips. The front of house staff were understanding and did not charge me for the poorly cooked steak meal. I happily paid for the perfectly cooked steak meal a few days beforehand.

It was OK. Not particularly excellent. The pork spare ribs felt slightly dry. The sauce tasted good but could be slightly more savour. Also had seafood chowder for one lunch. If there is an option to spice up a bit it would be perfect. But overall a great family restaurant. It is the best place I recommend in Hokitika.
We have ordered seafood chowder, Moroccan lamb salad and roasted pork belly. The chowder was great, lamb was a bit too oily. Service was great tho, and atmosphere we came in the Sunday evening and it wasn't overloaded. Would recommend if you want a nice dinner
Good atmosphere and friendly staff. We ordered chicken nuggets & fries and chowder, quite a good choice for afternoon snacks.
Absolutely delicious food. I had the Moroccan Lamb Salad and my wife had the Vegetarian Burrito. Both dishes were beautifully served and very tasty. Great service too. Would recommend very highly. We will be back

We ordered the renowned Whitebait Pizza and another pizza (unfortunately, the name slipped our minds). The Whitebait Pizza lived up to the hype — it was unlike any pizza we’ve had before, a true West Coast experience. The crispy, golden crust provided the perfect base for the delicate flavor of the whitebait, and it was topped with just the right amount of seasoning to enhance the fish without overpowering it. It felt both simple and sophisticated, a perfect tribute to local ingredients.
The second pizza was equally impressive, with fresh toppings and a well-balanced flavor. The crust was thin and crisp but held the toppings without becoming soggy, a mark of a well-made pizza. Both pizzas were generously portioned, ensuring we left satisfied.
Atmosphere & Service
The atmosphere at Fat Pipi is casual and inviting. We sat outside, enjoying the seaside air and the laid-back West Coast vibe. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. They even checked in to see if we were happy with the whitebait pizza since it’s such a specialty item — a nice personal touch.
Price & Value
We found the prices reasonable, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. The pizzas were more than enough for two people, and we appreciated the thoughtful preparation. The unique nature of the whitebait pizza alone makes it worth the visit.
Final Thoughts
Our experience at Fat Pipi Pizza was fantastic. The combination of a relaxed vibe, local flavors, and great service makes this place a must-visit in Hokitika. If you’re in the area, definitely give the Whitebait Pizza a try — and maybe write down the names of all the pizzas you order!

Really Good Pizza, Liked sitting out the back near the beach to see the sunset and take some photos of the drift wood Hokitika sign near by while waiting. Benches might need to be bolted down a bit better though.
The staff was very friendly during the order process. There are many options available, as well different sizes. The pizza was quite tasty, but what was bothering was that inside it was so cold. It was uncomfortable to really enjoy the food while it was so cold, and therefore the atmosphere was not great.
The please and service were nice enough. I was recommended this restaurant by many people. I was quite disappointed by the pizza. The pizza dough itself you can tell is pre-made or frozen. Which really took away from what could have been a really great pizzza
Awesome experience! Loved all the quirky art work and decorations. The pizza is fantastic. Lots of flavour, and loaded with toppings. Would highly recommend.

Fat Pipi make one of the best pizzas I have ever eaten - and I have eaten lots of them all around the world (including many in Italy ;)
Thin and crisp base and baked exactly to the point. You can taste the high quality ingredients even in the base! And further, they have THE BEST vegetarian pizzas I ever had. "The punk" is such a nice, funky but fitting combination of toppings, you can tell the people of Fat Pipi do it with thoughts and love. "Amigo" is also very nice. While many other restaurants just throw random vegetables on their "veggie" pizzas - they do it differently here! Shame it is so far from my home. And if you wondered - no - I don´t get paid for this review ;)
I've eaten here over a number of years when visiting Hokitika and without fail the food is fantastic. Freshly made, good variety of options and the staff were very friendly. I would always recommend a visit to Fat Pipi Pizza when friends / family are traveling to Hokitika

Great staff. Very nice and energetic. We got “The Beef” full and “The Chicken” half as well as coffee. Price was on the high end but the sandwiches were excellent and very tasty. The chicken was ordered without cheese and they offered to add more meat as a replacement so very happy with that offer. Highly recommended.

Wonderful ambience, great range of sandwich options in two sizes (half loaf $12 and full loaf $23). I chose the coaster and it was absolutely delicious. So pleased we came here.
These sandwiches are fantastic. I tried the half Italian and it was so good I ordered a second sandwich and tried the half New Yorker. Both had the perfect ratios of bread to meat to toppings to sauce. Portion sizes were great and the local kiwi we were sitting next to commented on me ordering a second one and said “we don’t often see someone who isn’t filled by just one”. We will absolutely return if we are ever in Hokitika again.
Always thought “how good can sandwich taste” and boy… this place showed me how good sandwiches can taste 🤣 Bought two halves (Chicken and Coaster) and it was enough to fill me and my husband’s stomach. Bread was soft, vegetables blended in really well and nicely with the meat. It was really good!
Great service and sandwiches. Staff were kind and offer to split our half sandwich for us for ease of sharing. The tea was unique and quite memorable part of our short visit to Hokitika.

Not the friendliest to tourist I supposed and the fish portion was kinda small (not sure if it’s cause of the type of fish we got). It was quite oily as well and the batter wasn’t as nice as some others we tried.
The best fish and chips we’ve had in New Zealand. Good portions of fish, good batter and the blue cod tasted fresh and meaty. Chips were good but…still not as good as a UK chippie. This seems to be a NZ chippie theme, they’re like McCain oven chips. We took a short walk up the road and ate on the stationary boat, overlooking the sea. Perfect.
Food was great, cooked well, and very tasty.
The service was a tad on the slower side, and they were somewhat busy, so wait time was long too, but we filled in the time with a walk down the side of the river.

Do not buy a burger from this place. I had a cheese burger and chicken burger. Cheese burger was disgusting! Gagged and spat it out straight away. The “meat” pattie was absolutely disgusting. It was either off or dog food. Mind you, I don’t think I’d even feed it to a dog to be honest. Chicken burger was severely lacking in anything good. Chicken burger was literally one chicken pattie, some lettuce that had turned to mulch and a tiny bit of onion with a quarter squirt of tomato sauce. Will not be going back to this place again

We had a fantastic dining experience at EastEat Chinese Restaurant in Hokitika. We ordered Kung Pao Chicken, veggie fried rice, fried squids, and fried pork & prawn dumplings, and everything was absolutely amazing! The flavors were spot on, and each dish was cooked to perfection.
Surprisingly, they charge $3 for chili oil, but I would highly recommend getting it—it adds a fantastic kick and enhances the flavors even more. We also ordered small portions of rice and noodles to accompany the dishes, and they complemented the meal perfectly.
The food quality and taste exceeded our expectations, and we left extremely satisfied. Highly recommend this place if you're in Hokitika and craving delicious Chinese food!

Ordered Beef Hofun, Prawn Fried Rice, sizzling Chicken satay, chicken nuggets and prawn twisters.
The flat noodles is a bit hard and not as good as the other Chinese restaurants.

Food is good, we are missing Asian food after being 8 days in NZ. We need ordered sweet and sour pork, stir fry chicken oyster sauce, beef fried rice had the nice wok hey(can hear the high heat wok working) and the braised beef noodle is awesome, broth is yummy with tender beef. We are so happy with the meal.

This place deserves a superb review. As a Chinese, food was so authentic and there’s wok hey taste!! Simple dishes like mapo tofu and fried eggs with tomatoes were already so amazing. We were craving for Chinese food and the food here have exceeded our expectations. Portion of food was a lot too. Felt that we have over-ordered for 2 people. The staff were very sincere and friendly. Highly recommend this place for good authentic Chinese food.
Was the only place serving lunch at 14:30 so we went for a lunch to this restaurant.
Had very nice pan-fried pork and veggie dumplings. Beef brisket stew with tomatoes and a portion of steer fried chicken in oyster sauce. All food was good or very good. The spicy sauce they had went very well with the noodles and dumplings. The portions were generous.
For the service you would have to ask for things (e.g. water) and there seems to be a slight language barrier, but, overall, we were very satisfied.

They have menu with many options for meals. Staff is nice, food is brought up quickly with fresh taste. I see many people coming to take away. The restaurant space is comfortable, clean, on the table is decorated with flowers. Lovely!

Great place for dinner, relaxing atmosphere. There are an open terrace and inside tables available. It was 3 of us and we've ordered catch of the day and chef-cooked steak, the fish was a bit dry, fries were lacking seasoning, bit the steak was amazing. To summarize it's a great place to have meat but not for seafood. Not the worst experience

Friendly and accommodating staff. They hear and follow all dietary guidelines. All food ordered was very tasty and you can see the sea from the window. We only hope for better prices but apart from that we are very happy we chose to eat there!
Serendipitously dropped by here for dinner as the other place we had intended to go was full. The food was good - lamb had no gamey smell, and the meat and seafood platters were plenty for sharing, at a very reasonable price. We definitely expected to pay more because it was a hotel’s restaurant, but ended up paying less than we did in other restaurants during our trip.
The service staff were also very friendly and attentive to our needs. Great experience overall!
Seafood chowder, mussels and catch of the day were absolutely delicious. There’s room for improvement for the apple crumble - crumble was not sweet enough and apple not sour enough, it would also be better without the whipped cream.
The catch of the day is great! The fish is really fresh and tasty. However, it would be better to tell us how to enjoy the stone grilled beef.

Thatcher & Small is a trendy and popular restaurant in Hokitika that offers a unique interior space with comfortable seating and stylish decor. While the prices may be considered somewhat high, many find the experience to be worth it.
We are tourists who come here for a quick breakfast, don't expect much in terms of food taste or space here. However, we were pretty surprised with the interior space decorated in a very unique style, each corner is a special style. The store has a large space, comfortable seats, they even decorate the floor. Here's suitable for chill out at all times of the day,Yeah!The taste of the food is also great.
Unfortunately we didn't have time to enjoy the drinks and many other dishes on the menu.

Coffee is great, food was great. Service rubbish. Took them over 30 mins to make a muesli, asked twice where it is and they kept saying it’s coming. We had people come and go sitting all around us ordering meals eating and leaving while we sat waiting… just admit it you forgot our meals
Went there for a late breakfast. Eggs Benedict! Staff were very nice and the food very delicious. Never had better eggs Benedict. The flat white was good, just a hint too bitter for my taste. But saying that, I usually have heaps of milk in my coffee.

Trendy new restaurant in Hokitika. Service was very attentive, the food top notch, and their namesake beer on tap was delicious. Enjoyed the ambience and overall experience. Food is pricey, but I am yet to find anywhere in NZ that isn't, but this was worth the expense.
We stopped in for coffee and a cake mid afternoon. What a brilliant place! Great look and feel with really nice folks serving. Coffee was awesome and cakes even better. Was very cool they had small size options for the cake as it was great to choose big or small servings. Worked well for my wife and I. Would love to try something from the main menu in the future. It looked great too.
The eggs bennies at Stella Cafe were delicious 😋 As were the smash avocados on toast. We would recommend Stella's for breakfast, brunch and lunch. The live bee hive was an added cool item to the place!

The Woodstock Hotel, established in 1870, is just a short drive from Hokitika and continues to be an integral part of the community. This historic hotel now offers modern accommodations and delectable meals, along with its own craft brewery producing a diverse range of handcrafted beer and cider. Guests can savor their meals in the beer garden overlooking the picturesque Hokitika river and enjoy stunning views of the Southern Alps.
Absolutely fantastic spot for campers. Free to park at, just register at the bar from 16:00 during winter. Food is 10/10 & the home brew beer etc are excellent too. Toilet available to use throughout the night also! Beautiful gorge just 25 mins up the road. Thanks very much team!!

Highly reccomend. We went here on a Tuesday night when there’s 2 for 1 the price of 1 meal deals. Efficient service and great meals. Free camping out the back. Nothing special but a flat parking lot is all you need after a great meal. Highly recommend a stopover for a night.

Month ago I decide to move in the west cost and had big issue with the weather the day after, impossible for me to reach the location due the red allert and strong wind all way long the road from Christchurch, I’ve asked the owner gently for a refund due the issue or at least an agreement for some money back, no answer from him, didnt really care about my issue and just kept the money… well if this is your way of approaching with the clients… I understand business but an answer back to try to figure it out the issue would have been more then enough for me… but looks like the owner doesnt really care about it
We came here for dinner and ordered a cake for dessert. Unfortunately, we were charged for two cakes instead of one, which caused unnecessary confusion. On top of that, the food itself wasn’t very good and the Duty Manager was unhelpful and unfriendly, making the experience even more disappointing. Make sure to check your bill carefully if you decide to visit.
We were recommended to come here for dinner. Was a Tuesday so was a wonderful treat to have 2 for 1 main meals. Food was amazing, service perfect, can't fault - definitely recommend. We will be back!
I honestly don’t know how this place I still open, i was there last week and the service is bad, slow, disorganised. The curly haired young man was understanding and the other staff were unbothered. The wait for food is overly long and when our order arrived it was wrong and the whole place feels like it runs on excuses rather than effort. If you want to waste your time, money and patience, this is the place for you. Although there is a lovely view down the river.
Very welcoming friendly staff, good beer on tap and could stay in our campervan over night once we registered with them. Would be my local watering hole for me if I was frequenting the area more for sure.

Stone Oven Bakery Cafe & Asian Grocery Store, formerly known as Preston's Bakery, relocated to Revell Street in 2005 and underwent a name change. The establishment prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients to create handcrafted pastries and savories for both locals and visitors. The cafe boasts a charming old-style ambiance with a bakery on one side and a sit-down eatery on the other. Customers can enjoy flavorful coffee and an array of bakery pies and pastries.
If I get the chance when in a new town, I would check out the local cafe or bakery.
I was lucky because this establishment had both. From the number of locals and tourists,I could see its popularity.
Ordering my usual big breakfast, I knew what to expect from my past experiences.
Everything I ordered was fast, hot, and delicious 😋 . Staff were excellent and efficient at clearing and taking orders for the next patrons. Atmosphere and cleanliness was spot on.

We visited Stone Island Bakery after reading its positive reviews. It is a bright and welcoming bakery with an enthusiastic team. The bakery offers a selection of freshly baked goods, although the shelves were not fully stocked when we arrived-likely due to being busy-including breakfasts, pastries, and a variety of breads.
Unfortunately, this is probably the lowest rating we have given an establishment during our 10-day stay in New Zealand. Our food took a long time to be served, and we were still waiting for our coffee after finishing our meal, while other guests who arrived after us were served promptly. The creamy mushroom soup we ordered was more starchy than creamy and tasted processed. The cheese scones were served with cream and preserves. The only saving grace was the mushroom and cheese toasties and the coffee.
The bakery is popular and can get busy, its probably better to grab something to go than to dine in.
Got the pasty and butter cookies. Pasty was okay. Butter cookies were really nice with fine crumbs, similar to Asian style that use icing sugar instead of regular.
Amazing little café, food was a decent amount, bread on the breakfast is a good size. Definitely recommend this place will be coming back

Absolutely love the Stone Oven Bakery Cafe in Hokitika! They have a fantastic range of food, both from the cabinet and the menu – something for everyone. The staff are always welcoming and super friendly, which makes the whole experience even better. Definitely one of my go-to spots when in town.

The staff is really nice and the lobby was clean. However, the bedroom's bathroom was dirty when we checked in. It looked like black mold was in the shower. We had a 2 bedroom beachfront room. The view was beautiful! However the layout of the rooms was weird. You have to walk through one of the rooms to get to the bathroom. The beds were comfortable and the main rooms were clean. We ate at the restaurant in the hotel for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was not that great of food however their dinner menu is amazing! Their rack of lamb was the best rack of lamb I had while in New Zealand. Definitely eat there for dinner but maybe skip their breakfast.
We're grateful to the Chinese-speaking staff at the reception. Also grateful to the manager for her communication and understanding. We spent a wonderful night. Falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves was truly wonderful.
Stayed in Ocean View deluxe room on the second floor which had a balcony.
Hotel is right on the beach seafront, with stunning views to the sea .... absolutely beautiful sunsets.

The location is the best thing about this hotel. Just a hop across from the beach and shopping, couldn't ask for a better place.

I’ve never stayed at a 4 star hotel where I need to put a sign out for servicing. Next day we didn’t put sign out as we hadn’t currently left our room and the cleaner opens the door without a knock (and some of us weren’t dressed!) and just walked in! The room wasn’t clean, lots of dust - they seem to dust around everything.
Wifi is not great. And can’t connect your device to the tv.
Customer service at reception wasn’t helpful when I talked about the servicing of rooms.
When the cleaner came to the room the next day with towels to service we were leaving in 10 mins - I asked them to come back which I could tell really annoyed them.
I would avoid the restaurant for the price and the quality of the food. But also a $2.50 charge for a takeaway box! Ridiculous!!
Bit disappointed with our experience. Have stayed in years gone by and really enjoyed. This time we were given room that tradesman had been in and left bathroom in a mess. Reception blamed tradesman for not telling them he had left a mess! Sorry but onus is on staff to check and clean space after repairs have been done. Had to move to another room as no one on site to clean....no bath now. Room very dusty and getting tired. Maybe no one had used room for a while. Restaurant on site. Food ok. Great location.
I was prepared to hate this hotel as the most disappointing so far on our 5 week trip. It didn’t have any air con - it was a hot day - and we faced the prospect of having to lug exceptionally heavy cases up the stairs to our room. But to be fair some poor member of staff drew the short straw to lug the cases up the flight of stairs not only for us but for a tour group also checking in. I hope they pay him extra for such hard work!
The air con is apparently only in 2 rooms in the hotel, the penthouse suite. However once we’d got over the initial stifling room, we put the fan on and it eventually did its job. On the plus side the beds and pillows were comfy, the bathroom well equipped and the shower pretty good. I even had a plug near a mirror to dry my hair, something that even 5 star hotels can get wrong. This is really the best of the hotels in Hokitika and it was just for a night. Ocean views are amazing when you walk along the beach.

Got the butter chicken and garlic naan. Tasted like tomato chicken, lack in flavour and lack in meat. $6 garlic naan lacked in flavour also, tasted like plain naan with bits of garlic scattered on it. After I told others about it I was told that Priya has gone downhill which is a shame as I did enjoy coming here many times ago. Hopefully Priya will get better again, fortunately my toddler will enjoy the tomato chicken.

We came in just before closing on a public holiday and had one of the best Indian meals in New Zealand. We got the butter chicken and paneer kadhai and both were excellent especially the kadhai!

I was on another pie reviewing mission ans I travel throughout NZ and I specifically drove to Hokitika to come to the Clocktower cafe because someone recommended it to me saying that had great pies.
These are good quality pies, however they’re not the best pies I’ve ever had. The pies certainly are the authentic NZ homemade style pie, but with fairly generic flavours and small selection of flavours.
With that said, I chose a steak and blue cheese, because it was the most unique pie flavour option. The pastry was perfect. I felt they had the pastry of the pie on point. It couldn’t be better. The steak inside the pie was slight dry, but not to an unbearable extent. The ratio of steak to gravy was perfect, the pie wasn’t too sloppy, and the gravy enhanced the flavour. The blue cheese was a great contrast of flavour. My only critique with regard to the cheese was that the cheese was only on one side of the pie, so one side of the pie was just the flavour of a steak pie. Thankfully, it was the second half of the pie that had the blue cheese and it was a lovely pop of flavour to end my pie consumption moment.
The cafe itself is quite big, the decor is slightly dated in my opinion, but the cafe is fairly busy so I assume it’s popular with locals.
The service from staff seems good. However, I was there when it was busy, so waited at the counter for a while to be served, and then waited quite a long time for my coffee.
Overall I think this is a solid choice for a pie if you’re passing through, but no award winners here.

Without doubt, the best coffee I had on the West Coast and super friendly staff. The Clocktower Cafe opens early for your caffeine fix if you are off out to take photos, catch a fish or set off on an adventure. I can also highly recommend the poached eggs on toast as a tasty way to set you up for the day!

I have visited Hokitika Townchip three times and plan to return whenever possible. Their fish and chips are exceptional, with a wide variety of fish options as well as burgers. The cooked food is delicious, with perfectly golden and crispy chops. Service is efficient through a window to the street, giving it a charming food cart vibe. Overall, the service is excellent and the quality of the food is outstanding. On my next visit, I will definitely try one of their burgers.
So glad we happened upon this place as we strolled through Hokitika. This was the BEST fish and chips I've had since visiting Iceland, and that's saying a lot! Very generous portions. I thought the price was quite reasonable. Hot and fresh! Not much room to eat inside the shop, but there are picnic tables outside which we enjoyed.

Loved the name and play on words. Sadly the fish was overcooked and dry, and the chips lacked seasoning (this is subjective, however we were pleased to have packed our own salt). As many reviewers have mentioned, this is possibly the most expensive chip shop in the South Island. I don't mind paying extra for quality, and this is something the business can work towards.

Quirky Fish and Chips spot, ingenious name. However, the food somewhat lets it down. The chips weren't well seasoned and the batter on the fish was a bit too thick. When you bite into the fish, you taste more of the batter than the actual fish. Fry vats evidently need skimming/filtering despite it being early in the morning. The blue cod were overcooked and dry, they likely would have appeared larger, been flakey instead of dry, and tasted better when they were at the correct done-ness. The rest of the meal was cooked fine, perhaps a seperate basket for the fish so you can pull them at different times? I dunno, but something needs adjusting because that was disappointing.

Just had the strangest experience here. We are staying nearby and had read the excellent reviews of the restaurant. I tried calling to see if the restaurant was open for dinner but there was no answer; so we decided to take the short drive. We were essentially stopped at the door and told that the restaurant was “full”— even though there were many open tables visible. In fairness, we were dressed very casually, so maybe we weren’t dressed according to their dress code. But as someone who worked in hospitality for many years, it’s quite simple to tell someone kindly that they are not dressed appropriately. Being met at the door and hustled away was an unusual and rather offensive experience.

Great dinner at the restaurant. We started with drinks on the terrace, overlooking the field with lovely alpacas, all the way to the ocean. Then dinner, which was very nice. We ordered the lamb and the fish of the day. It tasted very nice, the wine suggestion was great, and the service was warm and very welcoming. We loved it and would warmly recommend it!!! Enjoy all!
A very kind mother/ daughter duo. It’s a small business and it feels good to support the local economy. You can see the sea and mountains in the background. The rooms are spotless with all the necessities (organic soap, shampoo and more). The place has a lovely rustic charm while still being modern and very very well kept. We had dinner at Thatcher & Small on Easter Sunday and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. We’d made a reservation ahead of time (highly recommend doing so – it’s a popular spot!) and everything was smooth and well-organised when we arrived.
The menu is wide-ranging with something for every appetite – from smaller bites to hearty mains – and the drinks list was just as impressive. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure we were well looked after without ever rushing us. Our food came out in great time, and the portions were generous too. They gave us just the right amount of time between courses, which made for a really relaxed and enjoyable evening.
The garlic bread was absolutely delicious, and the steak was cooked perfectly – both are must-tries! There’s also a fully heated outdoor area which makes it a great option for larger groups no matter the weather.
All in all, a great spot for a special meal out – we’d definitely visit again!

Our experiences turned out to be two extremes:
Breakfast – good coffee and pancakes.
Dinner – the worst Beef Wellington: completely overcooked beef, soggy pastry, bland vegetables and mashed potatoes. The “fish of the day” was just as bad — slightly cool fish and cold chips. Even after I told the staff how disappointing our mains were, they didn’t react or even offer an apology!
We were a big group; some of our friends enjoyed their dishes like risotto and lamb…
Thatcher & Small in Hokitika was a great dinner choice. The place blends a cozy bar vibe with restaurant-quality food and modern décor that still feels welcoming. We started with their house lager, crisp and refreshing, plus Salt & Pepper Squid and Arancini — both perfectly cooked and flavorful.
For mains, the Pumpkin Risotto was rich and creamy with great texture, while the Lamb Shoulder was tender and well balanced with fries, salad, and mint yogurt sauce. The Beef Wellington and Fish & Chips were also spot on, with fresh ingredients and just the right amount of seasoning.
Food, drinks, and service were excellent, and the relaxed atmosphere made it easy to unwind. After dinner, we walked to the nearby beach and caught the golden sunset — the perfect end to the evening. Highly recommended if you’re in Hokitika.
We really enjoyed our visit. Trish had the Eggs Bene and was impressed, the homemade Rosti was the highlight, and a relief after the one we had a couple of days ago in Franz. I had Sushi Bowl which I also enjoyed but maybe the Pull Pork was a little dry. We also got a few treats from the cabinet which also hit the spot. The only comment is that maybe the Carrot Cake could be more cake and less icing, maybe hold the middle layer.

Seems to be the place to be in town. Decent food, we had beef Wellington which we liked a lot. Besides that nothing fancy but overall good place to go. For the kid I asked to replace fries for veggies, which they nicely did.
Delicious "breakfast for lunch" bene. Poached eggs over a potato pancake with bacon, spinach and mushroom gravy. The gravy is inspired! Great coffee, too.

1315hrs on a Monday. 2 empty tables outside and only 5 or 6 occupied inside. We walked in to decide whether to dine in it out, the waitress passed us without a greeting. We decided to find outside and dart at a table. She came out to the terrace 3 times but again failed to acknowledge us.
Eventually we attracted her attention and requested menus to be told very sharply that we must go in and inspect the menu at the till. I asked how I was supposed to know that as there are no signs advising that is the system to be told it is always like that.
I questioned how I was supposed to know that without any information she shrugged and walked off.
We left. Not prepared to have such sullen welcome to any establishment. Simply not the customer service we have enjoyed throughout NZ.
It is very rare for me to walk out of a hospitality venue but this will never have a cent of my money.
It clearly states it is a restaurant and online menu shows formal meals alongside snacks etc but I didn't expect to find a fast food joint

This is the 2nd time I've got a salad. The 1st time they don't mix it. When I said what sauces they just made the salad so wet, that it was horrible.

We popped in on our South Island roadtrip after reading all of the amazing reviews and we were EXTREMELY impressed!
We tried the keto scrolls (so damn good that we inhaled them before taking a photo), custard slice, ginger crunch, and salted caramel keto cheesecake. These were some of the most delicious baked goods we've ever eaten.
Jo is also so lovely and friendly. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

We've travelled over 4,000kms through the North and South Island and this little Cafe has the freshest food we've had, made fresh every day, the coffee is great as well. Right beside the laundromat so very convenient for those that are travelling. Well done ladies 🥰
Moist and well spiced carrot cake + delicious brownie. We also had pies and i love that the pie has enough sauce inside and a good crust :)
The pies had the flakiest and buttery pastry. The fillings were also well seasoned and full of flavour. Great coffees too!
The locals favourite place to get coffee! Jo is the loveliest lady and it's a joy to start everyday with a great coffee and conversation. My daughter looks forward to her coco and cookie every morning 🌄 Family friendly, dog friendly, local friendly, and tourist friendly. 10/10
It seems to be quite a popular spot in the area for pies. We tried two pies with meat filling (one with lamb and one with venison) and both were tasty. Unfortunately, when we visited, no vegetarian savoury options were available. Friendly staff. It can also be a good way to make waiting for your laundry more enjoyable as the laundromat is just next to it.
Perfect place for a coffee/pie on the road- the lady was so friendly and helpful (gave great advice on Hokitika and the local area). The steak pie was one of the best we have had on the South Island.

One of the best meals I’ve had travelling along the West Coast. Amazing presentation, attentive service, delicious flavours and beautifully plated. An unexpected gem in Hokitika and while I don’t usually eat in the same place twice I would have if I stayed more than 1 night.

Kitchen Hokitika is amazing. We had the bbq ribs and the fish tacos, and we couldn’t finish either of them. The food was delicious and the atmosphere cheery. Great place for solid kiwi tucker.
We eat with our eyes and this was definitely sexy food! Flavors were incredible to match the beautiful food presentation. Coffee was hot and aromatic. Wines were well priced. And service always came with a smile 😊 Love this team!
While I cant say I've visited every eating establishment in Hoki, after eating at "Kitchen" I'm not sure I need to. What a great place ,has a nice vibe about It, and the food ,oh the food, so good. I had the stuffed Kumar, just delicious.
Just wow! having traveled around NZ and parts of the world and even working in hospitality for a portion of my life...This place is absolutely fantastic.the individuality of the cafe and all the beautiful details they have included in the food and cafe. I have never been to cafe with such fresh and delicious food. The staff are friendly and the environment is perfect. Honestly I could not recommend this cafe enough to anyone . It's sure to impress.

After a quick scout around town this is definitely the most buzzing place at 2pm on a Wednesday on a drizzly Winter day! Highly rate the seafood chowder and pate. Lovely and cosy inside and lovely staff! Easy 5 stars!
Started with morning coffee which was excellent. Came back for an evening meal. Well presented and very tasty. Jim is a very friendly welcoming host and run this hidden gem well. I would recommend booking for weekends as this place will hopefully do well.
Loved this amazing kitchen. Staff were super friendly and accommodating. The place is deceiving when u walk in it seems small but there is so much space even upstairs. Loved the brick walls, bookcases and art. The food was like fine dining but at reasonable prices.
Best coffees. We went for breakfast and dinner. U gotta go here when you come to Hokatika. We had the fish and the steak.

Amazing food last night. Me and my partner went for dinner. Great service and lovely people that worked there! Good selection of craft beer too. The fried cauliflower was incredible, tasted just like fried chicken!

This place is one of the hidden culinary gems of NZ. It’s hard to believe you’re in little old Hoki when you see the beautiful presentation and taste the food these ladies produce in their tiny kitchen. Just had our second meal in 2 months, and it was sensational food, drinks and service on both visits. As a new mum with a baby in tow, the staff were great about having a wee one with us, and I felt really comfortable breastfeeding (something which not all establishments do well!!). This place needs hats... Cuisine if you’re reading this, I hope you visit soon
Popped in here on my wilderness trail, not knowing what to expect. I was blown away. The food and drink is some of the best I’ve had, plant-based or otherwise, and that’s having lived and having had quality plant-based food in Sydney, Vancouver, and Austin, where I now live.
Would come back to the west coast just to have the Baja Tacos and dirty tonic Gins again. Loved it.
Must post about the amazing place we found for dinner last night. Gatherer - a plant based restaurant and bar with wicked food and a great drinks and cocktail menu as well. Awesome staff make you feel welcome.

The food here is delicious. Something different .with the wole/ raw food approach Great coffee too. Funky eclectic place and lovely friendly staff.
Popped in for lunch on a Friday. Best gluten free food in the country. Every table was occupied, people waiting for tables, such is the high standard of food presented at this restaurant. Also encouraged to see 6 staff busy waiting on and cooking for the lucky patrons so great for the local economy. This is the best of the best.

Amazing food! We ordered the Golden Wok Noodles and a vegan green curry with rice and both were super delicious. The lady was lovely and cooked our food fresh. Would definitely recommend and come back! :)

Thai green chicken curry for lunch today was full of delicious flavour, noticably sweet carrots, tender chicken, plentiful green beans, broccoli and cauliflower. I would definitely recommend. Enough for lunch and save half for dinner. Medium spice was just perfect. Ready in 15 minutes. Very kind person operating the food cart.
Ordered 1 Thai Noodle Stir Fry and 2 Thai Curry Stir Fry (with Jasmine Rice) , but what we got is 3 Thai Noodle Stir Fry, which really dissapoint us 🙁. We informed the owner of the wrong order but he insisted that we ordered 3 Thai Noodle Stir Fry, which I don't think so cuz I am pretty sure my English is good enough for the food ordering process.
We also waited a really long time for our food but the food dissapoint us again, it tasted average and not authentic at all. 😞
Overall still worth trying but just don't order Thai Noodle Stir Fry and Thai Curry Stir Fry at the same time to avoid confusion and mix up 😊
Very nice and great suggestions! The cashew chicken was delicious as well as the pineapple fried rice! Dumplings were so good! I loved that everything was gluten free so I didn’t have to worry! Will definitely be visiting again!
So pleased I found this wee gem on my visit to Greymouth! Delicious and fresh, with wonderful friendly service, even though I was close to closing time. Dare I say, some of the best Thai I've ever had. I will definitely be back next time!
We saw this little store by chance as we were driving past. As Thai food lovers, we had to stop. Pon is extremely friendly and cooks excellent food. I wish we could eat there more often. An absolute recommendation! Sawasdee kaa from Germany.

A very lonely looking food stall… but by god my tastebuds weren’t lonely. Superb food and lovely owners. Would highly recommend for some tasty quick Thai food at a good price

My partner and I bought our lunch at the salad bar's first day of opening. Lots of vegan options including vegan cheese, dressings and brownies. Other dietary requirements also catered for. Will go back next time we're in town.
The soup and salad were delicious, fresh, nourishing, and wholistic. Service was kind and helpful. Though I ordered takeaway, the restaurant atmosphere was pleasant, clean, cosy, and safe. Really enjoyed the experience as a whole.

Dropped in on our way down to Fox Glacier. Loads of delicious salad options. We tried three of them in a large - all great! Good value small/medium/large $15/18/22. Nice to find some easy healthy options while on holiday. Plenty of goodness and flavour.
Can I just say… that was the most delicious cinnamon bun I think I’ve ever had. To the point I want to bake and gift that joy to my loved ones . Bit dramatic but true! Yummy salads, yummy local filter coffee and the yummiest hibiscus and honeybush beverage. This is a such a beautiful place focusing on local and whole food ingredients! Treat your tummy with the yummiest delights.
BEAUTIFUL salads! I was so pleased with my salad and the price is so reasonable. I finished off with a sourdough choco block cookie and that amazed me too. I Highly recommend this place, and 10/10 service too!
