Outback Bar And Grill is a popular dining spot in Coober Pedy, South Australia. Located on Hutchison Street, this restaurant offers a diverse menu with options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. From roasts to pastas, burgers to schnitzels, the restaurant has something for everyone. In addition to daily specials and vegetarian choices, they also serve a delicious Greek-style lamb salad that stands out from typical outback fare.
Stopped by Outback Bar & Grill while passing through Coober Pedy, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip! The food hit the spot — hearty portions, cooked just right, and perfect after a long day under the outback sun. What really made the visit stand out, though, was the service. Our waitress (wish I’d caught her name!) was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and full of local charm.

🌅 Great Spot for Breakfast and Lunch in Coober Pedy Dropped in for both lunch and breakfast during our stay, and each visit impressed us. The food was consistently delicious—fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. Breakfast was just as tasty as lunch, and the coffee? Absolutely spot on. Friendly service rounded out the experience. Highly recommend if you’re in town!

The best yiros meat I’ve ever tasted in my life!! Pork ribs were delicious too. Great vibe, very friendly and welcoming. So pleased overall :) Came back for breakfast!! Was delicious and the juice was yummy

What a find! The Outback Bar & Grill in Coober Pedy is a fantastic spot with delicious Greek and other food options. The Greek salad with lamb was absolutely amazing! Having visited Greece last year, I can honestly say the flavours are so authentic – it took me straight back there. The staff were super friendly and happily catered to our gluten- and dairy-free needs. We loved it so much we came back for dinner and tried the Greek pizza — also incredible! Highly recommend.

Great for what it is, great people fast service. Meals were better than expected and overall you’re in Coober Pedy, it’s pretty darn good. Crispy skin salmon, Rib eye, chicken snitch’s, pasta and pizza all good overall.

I would call it the best restaurant in Coober Pedy. The dining environment is very good and the food is perfect. The chips are the best I've had in Australia. Of course, the pizza, burgers, pumpkin porridge, drinks and beer are all good. We always have lunch and dinner here every time I come Coober Pedy. Highly recommended

Fast food restaurant
John's Pizza Bar & Restaurant, located in the remote town of Coober Pedy, Australia, is a popular spot known for serving some of the best pizza in the country. The friendly staff and short wait times make it a great choice for pizza lovers. Their menu offers a variety of classic and unique options, including Native Pizzas featuring kangaroo meat and chicken with cranberry.
The pizzas were excellent. Well cooked with very generous additions. The staff were helpful and the service was quick. The capricciosa and meat lovers were superb and the spaghetti with mushrooms and shaved parmigiana very tasty.
Brian N — Google review
Exceptional pizza. Excellent service. John's pizza restaurant is probably my favourite place to eat at, in Coober Pedy. The pizzas are huge and generously topped. Lots of flavours to choose from, so something for everyone here. Service is excellent and rapid, we waited a very short time for our meal and it did not disappoint. This place has the potential to become a franchise, it really is that good. Lovely outdoor seating and eating area, as long as the flies leave you alone.... 10/10.

I'm a little torn with this review. Was it's as good as other reviews say it is, NO but does it warrant a bad one,No. I'm being gracious with the stars. This place has a nice out doors seating area or sit inside and eat. The service it's self was good, nice ppl but it took over 30 mins to get our pizza's unfortunately. I didn't look like there were that many ppl in front of us waiting for Pizza, in fact there was no one getting served when we arrived. The food, I got a half meat lover and half BBQ chicken and my mate got a coat of arms. He said the coat of arms has a nice blend of kangaroo, Emu, cranberry and cheese. The meat lover was very nice. Unfortunately the BBQ chicken was lacking the chicken. The flavour was ok, the roasted veg was nice but something was missing besides the chicken. Would I return, maybe.
Ruidz — Google review
Didn’t expect to find pizza this good out here! Stopped in by chance and ended up with one of the best pizzas I’ve had in ages. Satay chicken’s a winner. Good feed, friendly crew.

Coober Pedy is world-famous for its opal mines 💎, but there’s another hidden treasure that every traveller must experience—John’s Pizza! 🍕🔥 This place is nothing short of a paradise for pizza lovers from all around the world. The large pizza is huge. We had to get a medium box to take home the balance. The ingredients are fresh and generous. Terrific pizza.

The pizzas were very good, but the wait time was unbelievable. The place was overcrowded with customers during that time (around 8 pm) awaiting their orders for pick-ups as well as dining-in. Most tables were occupied inside and outdoors. So we decided on takeaway. Paid for the order, went to the motel, had a shower & coffee. Then we came back and collected the pizzas after "One Hour" as advised.

Great place if you visit Coober Pedy. There's a free museum with a lot of interesting information and a paid tour which we would highly recommend. Our tour guide Zoe was great. She had plenty of information about living underground and opal mining even adding in some really interesting and funny personal stories. We also rented UV lights here to go noodling in the public pit. The next day we came back to hand back the torches and to let them have a look at our rocks (some had a bit of opal). His explanation about what we found and what we could do with it was great as we had no clue what we found exactly. All in all highly recommended this place if you're in Coober Pedy!

This is a Must-visit attraction in Coober Pedy. Everything you need to know about Opals is here in this beautiful museum cum opal jewellery store. The entrance to the venue is free. There are guided tours with informative movies which operate 2-3 times daily and need booking. There's a huge amount of rich history of opal mining, works of traditional arts, paintings, depictions of cultural heritages and so on... exhibited everywhere you look, from showcases to all the walls of this underground museum. There's a jewellery shop located within, which sells varieties of opal jewelleries, paintings & souvenirs, etc. Incidentally, there's also a coffee machine located inside the jewellery store area, where you can grab a quick coffee/tea while looking around. But there ain't any toilets/wash rooms inside this venue. So when you arrive here, make sure you are not in a Rush! Thankfully, there are a few emergency exits though 🤣

I dare say every person who comes to this quirky town will visit this museum, and so they should, it is a lovely experience. For the life of me I will never understand why they don’t charge for entry, no one would blink to do so nor complain after! There is a tour that you must go on. We had the delightful Zoe who described her childhood, school, work, home, partner and general life here. It was. privilege to hear the absolute inside knowledge into growing up and living in this town. An excellent way to spend 2-3 hours.

Excellent museum and a must visit when in Coober Pedy. There's lots to see and interpretation to read as free entry. There's also a great mine tour and rooms of a traditional, and modern dug out. Our guide was very informative and it was fun to hear about how 80% of the population live in dugouts. We also did the Old Timers Mine tour and these complemented each other and were quite different. Very enjoyable. Our 4 kids loved it!

Great place to learn about the history of one of the nature’s greatest creations in the world. Very interesting place and very lovely kind staff. Special thanks to our lovely Museum tour guide (her name starts with “Z” 😉) She explained so many interesting things about Coober Pedy & Opals and we instantly fell in love with that dry red desert 🏜️. The people we met were very friendly and so kind.. Already decided to visit back and hoping to see those beautiful nice friends and places again.. Thanks again for such a wonderful hospitality & welcoming us warmly.. - from T’gon Vic- 😇

Well set up museum related to history of Opal production with plenty of free parking. Nothing free about their product range though with highly elevated prices for just about anything in their Opal and Jewelery shop. The Lady shop manager is a most unfriendly person, not well suited to her role Great for a look but I would look else where in town to secure your Gem purchases. Tour bus drivers have always enjoyed comissions here, how ever this occured under previous management but is quite possibly still the case. Go for the free of charge displays but look more towardsshops like "Opalios and Star Opal" for great Opal , fossil and Jewelery purchases.

In Coober Pedy, South Australia, the Big Winch 360 offers a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors. It features Australia's first permanent 360 Circlevision cinematic experience, immersing guests in Outback culture with captivating visuals and surround sound. The complex overlooks Coober Pedy, providing stunning panoramic views of the town and the Breakaways. Originally built in the 1970s by Klaus Wirries, it has become a popular attraction and meeting place.
A lovely spot to enjoy the sunset over Coober Pedy. The recently opened bar and restaurant is nice and the team working are all friendly and helpful. The menu is well priced and worth checking out. Plenty of on-site parking and a great view over the township. The shop inside has a beautiful collection of painted zébra stones to sell.

This is truly one of those hidden outback gems where the kitchen staff/head chef & owners all come together. The food/service/pricing is next level. Spoke to kitchen crew to personally thank their efforts- all so happy and friendly. Sunsets are next level.

Very average food, staff were ok not too overly friendly. The atmosphere was great and seeing the view is fantastic also, great sitting area outside. Good shop to buy some souvenirs. Toilets are very dirty.. also no prices for drinks so have to keep asking.
Sam S — Google review
They smashed it out of the park. After visiting a couple of opal minds and at a loose end on what to do next, we popped into the Big Winch. Views of the town were fantastic, so I wasn’t expecting anything special. I ordered the laksa and Carola ordered the steak sandwich. The laksa was creamy and fragrant, the chicken succulent and the noodles perfectly cooked. I requested a sambal on the side which gave my dish that added kick. On asking would you like to share, there was none of it. I couldn’t fault the food, service and view. Coober Pedy is literally in the middle of nowhere but this place is well worth a visit if you’re passing through.
Andy M — Google review
Easy to park, staff very pleasant, our egg and Bacon were delicious, you even received a little brownie with your coffee ( yum). The shop had lots of variety of clothes, soft toys and souvenirs. There was various seating, from booths, little tables for to or long ones for groups. There was outside seating, but as the wind was very strong, it wasn't that pleasant with all the dust. If you like my reviews please follow us around Australia 🇦🇺.

The cheesy garlic bread was absolutely amazing definitely worth the 16$. I’m pretty sure I traveled to a different planet when I had that cheesy piece of heaven. Just when I thought it couldn’t get better my burger with the lot came out. Biggest burger I think I’ve ever had yet I still probably ate it the fastest I’ve ever eaten a burger. The mix of different flavours is incredible very well made. Not sure who the chef is but that man needs a raise. My chips were also gold and crispy with the perfect amount of salt. Will definitely come back this place is so good. Definitely leaving a tip

Came to watch the sunset while on a quick stop over on the way to Uluru. I ordered the works cheeseburger it was bloody amazing. My partner ordered the steak and that was good too for starters. I’d recommend the cheesy garlic bread as it was to die for. Views over coober pedy were stunning. Would recommend 100% if you’re visiting.

Dinner with a view—and a side of existential joy Stopped by The Big Winch for dinner and left wondering if I’d just eaten my way into a higher plane of existence. We ordered the pesto pasta and the grilled chicken burger, which I’m convinced were cooked by someone who made a blood pact with the flavor gods. The pesto pasta was so good I briefly considered proposing to it. Fresh, herby, and just the right amount of garlic to make you question your relationships. The grilled chicken burger? Juicy, crispy, and stacked like it was trying to win a bodybuilding competition. I took one bite and forgot my PIN number. Washed it all down with an Asahi and a Guinness, because why choose between light and dark when you can have both and pretend you’re sophisticated? The staff were legends—friendly, fast, and didn’t judge me when I tried to lick the plate. Bonus points for the view: you can sip your beer while watching the sun set over a landscape that looks like Mars if Mars had better hospitality. 10/10 would eat here again. Might even move in.

BIG4 Stuart Range Outback Resort offers a casual and unassuming stay with comfortable apartments, a pizzeria, playground, and BBQ facilities. The new management team has received high praise for their exceptional service and willingness to go above and beyond for guests. Visitors have highlighted the resort's awesome pool, well-maintained amenities including a camp kitchen and BBQ area, as well as the helpfulness of the manager in assisting with repairs. Additionally, guests have enjoyed outback tours organized by the resort.
A Great Place for Families – Exceptional Service! We had a wonderful stay here as a family. The place is clean, tidy, and ideal for a peaceful getaway. We initially booked a campsite for 2 nights. Unfortunately, on the first night, strong winds tore through our tent in the middle of the night, forcing us to move into the common area for shelter. The next morning, we approached the reception to see if any rooms were available. That’s when Clarissa came to the rescue! She went above and beyond, juggling room availability and somehow worked her magic to secure two rooms for us. What truly stood out was her kindness and willingness to help—she even arranged an early check-in knowing we had been up all night. Thanks to Clarissa’s efforts, the rest of our trip turned out to be warm, comfortable, and stress-free. We’re incredibly grateful and highly recommend this place to anyone—especially families!

A perfect stop in the SA outback on the way to Uluru. Staff are very friendly and incredibly helpful. Amenities are clean and very impressive. Plenty of showers and toilets, laundry facilities and an amazingly appointed camp kitchen and rec area. Sites are huge, and there's a great playground for kids, plus a gorgeous resort style pool with lounges under shade. So much to explore in Coober Pedy too.

I've stayed at this park many times when I've been working as a teacher in Coober Pedy. The rooms are comfy, clean, and well appointed (smart TVs are highly desired when travelling nowadays for sure). Also, the pool is great and heated(!!) This is really important for me as I love swimming but hate the cold. The entire park is really well maintained and set up, plus, the staff are always amazing, friendly, and helpful and I'm always happy to see them again when I arrive in town. A great place to stop when crossing through Coober Pedy!

I cannot express how wonderful the management of this Park has been. Clarissa and the whole team have gone way above for us as we had an issue with our car and it needed to be towed but they helped us store and move our caravan, gave us a lift to the airport and were just incredible in their help. The facilities are fantastic too - the pool is awesome, the playground great for the kids and bathrooms super clean. It was an easy walk into town and felt safe and secure. Oniste Pizzas and drinks were yummy too. Thank you so so much

Had a great time. We got the unpowered site for 40$ for two people. Showers are free but are limited to 5 minutes. Kitchen has everything but you’ll need your own plates and pots. Staff were so nice which is not common for the big4 in my experience. For camping it’s the best and cheapest. For room it’s cheaper the underground hotel if you want to experience something different.

We booked in here to camp a few weeks back. The manager was so helpful with us. We had to cancel our second (pre-paid) night due to extreme wind, and she was so obliging in helping us make other arrangements. Not a single complaint on their side, great customer service! Couldn't have been happier with the outcome, and would definitely book here again.
Bill P — Google review
We stayed in one of the two-bedroom cabins and were really happy with it. The view from our room was incredible and each night we’d sit and watch the sunset over the red dirt, it was just beautiful. The pool was lovely and the park itself was great overall. It’s about a 15-minute walk into town, though we chose to drive as it was a bit too hot to walk.

Oliver's Bar & Restaurant in Coober Pedy has been highly praised by visitors on multiple occasions. It is particularly lauded for its flavorsome Indian cuisine, complemented by an impressive selection of beers and wines. The restaurant is family-owned and exudes a welcoming atmosphere. Well, it’s about the food. There isn’t a huge choice in Coober Pedy on a Tuesday night, but this place was excellent. We had two great curry’s. Really good guys behind the counter. PLEASE, if you head to Coober, give this place a try. We’ve elevated Atmos because, although part of a Roadhouse, it was nice and clean.

🍽️ Disappointing Dining Experience Despite an Intriguing Name This restaurant, intriguingly named and featuring a menu centered around Indian cuisine, sadly didn’t live up to expectations. (No Italian food here.. 😊)The steak arrived overcooked and lacking any sauce, while other dishes—like the butter chicken and HSP—fell flat in flavor and freshness. The naan appeared to be store-bought, which detracted from authenticity, and although the chips were decent and the mango lassi was passable, overall the meal felt subpar. It gives the impression of relying heavily on pre-packaged ingredients. Regrettably, it’s not a spot I’d recommend for a satisfying or genuine culinary experience.

Stopped in Coober Pedy after many days on the road looking for something with flavour. Oliver’s Chicken Biryani was the special of the day and it was sensational. Best I’ve ever had. My partner had bacon and eggs which were very good. Great coffee and iced latte. Friendly service and clean.

Not a bad place to eat in Coober Pedy with friendly service. If you can get over that it is a roadhouse diner, it has a variety of meal options; the food is decent, well made with generous portions. It is also the only place where you can get some decent Indian meal options and mango lassi in town.

Talking about flexibility and giving the customer the experience, this place has it! I love garlic nan and mangoo lassi... the chicken vindaloo was very hot, tasty and delicious! Staff are also very friendly and nice 🙏🏼

Dinner and breakfast here….dinner was a great surprise to find something other than a hamburger or schnitzel (they are on the menu though) and had a great curry…early breakfast with bacon and eggs really hit the spot & the service is great too

Unassuming good eats. Given it doubles as a minimart at the back of the servo, that's what you need to expect re: atmosphere. Clean. Good service. Clean amenities. We had lunch & a breakfast here. Ordered 2 different curries & expected to get exactly the same with the cursory different veg chucked in. Instead each was distinct... & very tasty. Generous serves, presented well in balti bowls. Our breakfast of bacon & egg rolls were, again, generous on the bits that mattered. What more can a person want?

Today, I enjoyed the Big Breakfast here — the bacon was incredibly juicy and perfectly cooked. A few days ago, I tried their chicken biryani, which was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. Consistently great food and a wonderful experience!

Such a great place to explore and get insight into the old mining practices in Coober Pedy. Tours are self guided and there is lots to see and the interpretation is very interesting. Kids had a ball finding all the different spots and reading the signs etc. No good if you have mobility issues - there are a few very low spots too that require bending over to walk through. Very interesting to see the old dug out house all set up too. Gift shop on site and very friendly staff. We also visited the Umoona mine and it's with doing both as they are quite different experiences.

Great value for money and such a good way to learn about the history of Opal mining in Coober Pedy, while walking through a real underground mine. Owner very informative. Really enjoyed our visit and then fossicking in the pit out the front for our own little pieces of Opal. Highly recommend this place for everyone!

The Comfort Inn Coober Pedy offers a unique underground experience, as it is set in a former opal mine with cavelike quarters and an opal shop. Despite the hot weather outside, the rooms provide comfortable temperatures without air conditioning. The staff are known for their kindness and helpfulness, providing information about the local area. Guests can explore the interesting nooks and crannies tucked away in the hallways of this underground motel.
The underground experience - definitely the place to stay when in Coober Pedy. We stayed twice on a recent trip with the kids, the family room was spacious and tidy. Friendly staff, easy check in and overall a restful stay. Would highly recommend

Our group of 7 stayed in the family suite for a night during our Coober Pedy stopover. We Enjoyed our stay underground and had tons of room to work with in the family suite. Things could use a bit of updating and some additional lights could be good, especially in the bathroom. The kitchen had everything needed to cook a full meal and there was also a BBQ outside for guest use. After reception closed, we could still access the main part of the hotel as we had a separate exterior entrance for the family suite and thus had two keys, which was neat. The woman that checked us in and out was great and provided some wonderful tips for sights to see in the area.

Great location and is right next to a museum which I highly recommend going to. The kids will love it. The rooms here are massive, they have a kitchenette which is great. The room has a fan or two. The bed is super comfy. There is also a communal laundry inside. The ppl are lovely and if you are arriving after hours it was very easy to get keys and find your room. There is breakfast, I think it was about $20 pp and the there is a cafe/coffee shop inside too. I would stay here again.

What a great nights stay at a real underground hotel. The reception was so welcoming and friendly and the advice on local attractions, knowledgeable and helpful. The rooms are amazing! The services and level of comfort you’d never expect from an underground room. From an immaculate bathroom to the super comfortable bed. Everything you need is provided to offer a perfect nights accommodation and a true CP experience.

I have stayed here twice. It is great insofar as it provides an interesting underground experience and is good to explore. However, it needs upkeep - there was a smell of bad water or sewage, the outside carpets were worn and unattached, our bathroom door jammed, the entrance lock gave several patrons grief, switches weren't intuitive, or did not exist, and one gave a beep but appeared to do nothing. We are advised that there will be a charge if things are not washed up, but no plug is provided for the sink. We had a queen sized bed and two singles, but one chair. We couldn't find a switch for light in one room. 🤔 And that costs a pretty penny. Improve standards or charge less.

Oasis Tourist Park is a great park. Friendly, helpful staff. Clean amenities blocks, laundry etc and great you can walk to town. Our mining and town tour with Edi was terrific. He is very knowledgeable about Cooper Pedy and he took us to his own private dugout to show us what living in a home underground is like. A great tour!!

After having my motorbike breakdown outside town, I had an absolutely awesome stay at the Oasis Tourist Park in Cober Pedy. Fiona & Siban in the office could not have been nicer or more helpful, & the owner George looked after me like we were brothers. Their hospitality and kindness was exceptional, and part of me was sorry to say goodbye. I went on George’s “Town & Underground Mine Tour”, and his “Sunset Tour to the Breakaways” which was a truely unique experience. This town has a wonderful & eclectic array of colourful characters. I’d highly recommend everyone spend a few days in Cober Pedy, and experience life in this parallel universe. It was a truely wonderful experience.

Older style caravan park in Coober Pedy..just near the drive-in. Staff were helpful and welcoming although they allocated me a corner powered site right next to 3 other guests making it difficult for all 4 of us to move our vehicles...odd as the place was only half full! Showers are $1 per 7 minutes but it was hot/good pressure but has lots of cobwebs.

We stayed 3 nights at this lovely caravan park in Coober Pedy - very central to everything - Very clean amenities. We did both of the tours offered and George was a fantastic tour guide - heaps of local knowledge, lots of laughs. He arranged for our group to have a wonderful meal at CKs (really recommend the food here was amazing) and even drove me back at 10 pm when I left my bag behind - something he did not have to do. A true gentleman.

A good park and only a short work into town. The location was perfect as we could walk to most of the locations of interest. There are only limited sites with water which costs an extra $4 a day so book early if you want to connect. If you miss out, you can ealily fill your tanks in town for a small cost. I was a little disappointed that you've got to pay extra to use the BBQ and kitchen areas as this would normally be included when paying for full price sites. Irrespective, I would definitely stay here again of I return and would recommend it to others purely for its location.
Nathan — Google review
Unfortunately, I cannot say this was a great caravan park. The place overall felt worn down and needed some TLC. Facilities were dirty, we stayed for 2 nights and I don’t think the toilet/shower block was cleaned the whole time. One shower was unusable as the coin machine was broken. The plug in the camp kitchen, the rubber had worn away and therefore not holding water, which I found funny as they are very big on not wasting water. The washing machines were terrible! Did not wash my clothes thoroughly. The other party we were with used a different machine and the same outcome. Clothes still smelt and marks (not stains) didn’t wash off. I think with a bit of money and time the place could be a real hit!

The gallery showcases stunning paintings and sculptures depicting scenes from Best's life in Coober Pedy, while also housing a rare collection of Aboriginal art and artifacts.
Fantastic gallery with gorgeous aboriginal art. We got to see artist-in-residence Tommy Crow painting, and greatly enjoyed chatting with him. Nice selection of opal and locally made healing balms as well.

we paid 20$ for 2 after cuddling a joey for 1-2minutes. Which was absolutely amazing! However the owner randomly said that was it for today. Because of the heat the other animals didn’t come out. Just felt like a scam to be fair. Not sure if i would recommend.

A thrill to watch Tommy Crowe paint his amazing artworks. So quick with the brush and so skilled. Seemed like lovely guy too, who gave us a laugh. Your pamphlet Tommy was an interesting read of your life and work. Judy thank you for our time with TK the Joey and Blossom who enjoyed her snacks and your talk to allow us to understand better your work at the orphanage and how they came to be rescued by you all. I liked that it was a controlled setting and not for too long, with the best interests of the Joey & Kangaroo first and foremost. Well worth the visit for both the art and wildlife encounter.

Josephine’s Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage is a located in the heart of Coober Pedy, offering visitors a unique blend of art, culture, and wildlife conservation. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, thanks to the passionate owner who dedicate the time to both the gallery and the orphanage. The gallery itself showcases a stunning collection of Aboriginal art, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the region. But what truly sets this place apart is the Kangaroo Orphanage, where visitors have the chance to interact with rescued kangaroos. The orphanage cares for baby kangaroos that have lost their mothers due to accidents or other unfortunate events. Its possible to feed them and learn about their rehabilitation process is heartwarming and educational. The dedication of the owner to the wellbeing of these animals is truly inspiring.

Donation base to cuddle a joey. My 5 year old son used his $2 he got from trading his opals at Tom’s opal mine for the opportunity. Was very disappointing the cuddle only lasted a min max. Very quick. Maybe it’s not to distraught the joey. Wish the lady was clear on this or else I would have told my son to save his money.

Wonderful place with aboriginal art and visiting artist. A fine selection of didgeridoo and boomerangs and best of all, the kangaroo orphanage and an opportunity to feed kangaroos and cuddled a joey. Josephine and Terry are doing such valuable work with the wildlife and this is a wonderful way to share with the public
Desiree C — Google review
Jo and Terry, who run this place, are the most wonderful people with the biggest hearts. Apart from running a gallery full of wonderful Aboriginal art and selling some opal jewellery (this is Coober Pedy, after all), they also run a kangaroo orphanage - but they'll take in any injured wildlife. They hold kangaroo talks 5.30 pm Mon-Sat, gallery opening hours depend on traffic and season. The lovely Judy also helps out with running of the gallery and caring for the joeys. There's $10 ($5 child) admittance charge but donations are very much appreciated as they don't get any government or other funding and all their money (just like any other wildlife carers in Australia) are spent on the kangaroos. Terry has an amazing knowledge of the Aboriginal art so if you want to learn a thing or three, ask him! Definitely a must if you're in Coober or just passing through!
Paja P — Google review
Great selection of art and opal jewelry at a fair price. If you're an animal lover, definitely plan to do the kangaroo feeding. Bookings are required. The joeys are adorable and there's just something about feeding wasabi peas to kangaroos that you won't want to miss!

Opalios was absolutely my favorite shop in Coober Pedy! The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming — even if you don’t make a purchase, they still offer you a small gift and take the time to explain everything about opals in great detail. I bought a stunning opal necklace here as a birthday gift to myself 🎁, and every time I wear it, it brings back such lovely memories. I had such a lovely experience picking and purchasing my opal ring. The 2 ladies (owner and her daughter) were so helpful and informative. I wanted an opal mined in Coober Pedy and they helped me pick a unique ring and were able to give me some background on it. A very authentic experience. Not at all pushy and happy to let me take my time and have a think. They even let the kids pick a little gem each. Everything was very well priced and they have a big selection of stones and jewellery. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend, what a lovely experience! We really wanted to buy our daughter some opal earrings, but seeing as she’s only 7 and we live in a Caravan, we don’t think they’ll last long so we didn’t want to spend a fortune. We had been into several jewellery stores today and most people weren’t very inviting as we had a 5 and a 7y/o. Which is fair enough, we’re not their target audience 🤣. Here our kids were made to feel welcome, they got some free rocks and there was zero pressure to buy anything. They also had great prices and beautiful looking pieces. Thanks again to the lovely lady who served us!

The Serbian Orthodox Church in Coober Pedy is a remarkable underground place of worship, offering visitors a unique experience. Built in 1913 by Eastern European immigrants, it showcases intricate rock-wall carvings and a stunning vaulted ceiling. The largest underground church in the town, it provides an authentic glimpse into local culture and traditions. Visitors are encouraged to leave a donation for upkeep and can also light candles for an additional fee.
Definitely worth a visit while in Coober Pedy. It is a couple kms outside town and open 24/7. Entry is a $5 donation into an honesty box. It is a small underground Serbian Orthodox church but the beauty and dedication to create a lasting monument to Serbian tradition and culture in such a remote place is awe-inspiring. This was one of my highlights during my travels. It's something not expected that I won't find anywhere else.

The Serbian Orthodox Church in Coober Pedy, officially known as the Church of Saint Elijah the Prophet, is an extraordinary underground sanctuary that beautifully merges faith, culture, and the ingenuity of its community. Carved entirely into sandstone between 3 and 17 meters below the surface, this church is a must-see for anyone visiting Coober Pedy. 🕍 Architecture & Atmosphere Built in 1993 by Serbian Australians who settled in Coober Pedy as opal miners, the church was constructed underground to escape the region’s intense heat. The interior is a marvel, featuring a 30-meter-long nave with a 7-meter-high ceiling, all sculpted directly from the rock. The sandstone walls are adorned with intricate bas-reliefs of saints, and a stained-glass ceiling window bathes the space in a warm, ethereal glow. The glass iconostasis adds a unique touch to the sacred space. Visitors often describe the church as serene and awe-inspiring. One reviewer noted, “The simplicity of the church emphasises the incredible amount of work done to create this beautiful space in a very short time.” 🙏 Experience & Accessibility The church complex includes a community hall, parish house, and religious school, all carved underground. While the church is active, services are currently limited due to the difficulty of securing a resident priest. However, the site remains open to visitors, with an entrance fee of $5 AUD. Parking is available on-site, and the church is easily accessible via a gently sloping corridor. 🌟 Final Thoughts Whether you’re drawn by spiritual curiosity, architectural interest, or the unique underground setting, the Serbian Orthodox Church in Coober Pedy offers a memorable and moving experience. Its combination of cultural heritage and natural beauty makes it a standout attraction in the Australian outback. 📍 Address: St Elijah Dr, Coober Pedy, South Australia 5723 🕒 Opening Hours: Daily, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM 💰 Entry Fee: $5 AUD 🚗 Parking: Available on-site 📷 Photography: Permitted inside

Me and my partner had an amazing experience at CK Confectioner Filo! We ordered the Pork Adobo and Katsu Chicken, paired with a Dirty Chai and an Iced Coffee, and everything was spot on. The Pork Adobo was tender and flavorful, with that perfect balance of savory and tangy. You could tell it had been slow-cooked to perfection. The Katsu Chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, served with a delicious sauce that complemented it perfectly. The Dirty Chai had just the right amount of spice and espresso kick — such a comforting choice. The Iced Coffee was smooth and refreshing, not too sweet, and a great pick-me-up. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the cozy atmosphere made the whole experience even better. If you’re craving authentic Filipino food with a modern twist with affordable price, this is the place to be. I’ll definitely be back to try more from the menu! Highly recommend! 10/10 !!!

Went to this place twice same day. First got coffees to go, after checking out the menu, l decided to come for lunch. Flat white was amazing, but unfortunately iced latte was tasty quite burnt. The food was delicious, we had Korean fried chicken and Philipno bbq pork fried rice. I enjoyed the food very much. Cafe itself was very quiet.

A unique experience beneath the surface! Had a great time at Class Underground in Coober Pedy. The place itself is something special—an atmospheric spot that really captures the underground charm of this town. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. The food was decent—nothing over the top.

We ordered a solo hot pot with meat and sour pork soup. But the raw chicken meat they gave us was already spoiled. At first, my wife smelled something bad, and I thought it was because of the spices, and then we tried to boil it for 10 minutes. But when we ate it, it had a rotten smell and taste. And the sour pork soup was very sour; we've eaten sour soup before, but this soup was too sour. When my wife left the place and before getting in the car, she vomited.

Popped in for a late lunch. I had the Tocilog and husband the Korean fried chicken. Korean chicken wasn’t like the authentic stuff but nice none the less. The Tocilog was delicious. Had a really good smooth as well. We could sit undercover upstairs with the dog which was nice to get out of the sun.

If you are planning just one meal at Coober Pedy, the chilli prawn pasta at Opal Inn Saloon Bar is it. It was so good, I had it again on night two here. Great bar staff and service too.

What a lovely place, the staff are wonderful our room was lovely, clean, tea, coffee a fridge with milk in. But best of all I met Leanne she is a star, I asked her for directions to the bottle shop which is part of Opal Inn and it was a 2 minute walk but there was a fair few local aborigines hanging around so she drove me there and back. What a lovely lady 😍 we've not tried the food yet, but it's got everything you need. Would highly recommend, great room prices too and you get the use of their sister hotel pool.

This 15,000-hectare park showcases striking sandstone tablelands with vibrant red and orange hues during sunset. Visitors can explore the ancient landscape on guided tours or with permits from the Coober Pedy Visitor Centre. The park is home to diverse native flora and fauna, making it a must-see for nature enthusiasts.
This is a must see when visiting Coober Pedy approx 20klms north, the best picnic stop, must take a phone or camera you will not be disappointed with your visit

It's absolutely stunning. Suggest you drive from Coober Pedy along the dog fence first and then onto the lookouts. The first allows you to grasp the size and sparcenest of the lands in front of you but, make sure you give yourself time to get to the 2nd lookout and watch the stunning changes in colour across the landscape but be sure to look up and if there are clouds this is where the magic happens. Simply stunning, and in my 40 years of remote travel, I have never seen anything similar. Highly recommended.

📸 Remote Beauty Worth the Drive This spot is perfect for capturing stunning scenic photos, offering a raw and untouched landscape that’s a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. However, be prepared—the access road is completely unsealed and can be tricky to navigate. A 4WD is not really needed, but recommend to reach the location safely, especially if you’re planning a trip after rain or during dry, dusty conditions. Rugged, but rewarding.

Crocodile Harry's Underground Nest & Dugout is a must-visit attraction in Coober Pedy, South Australia. Once the home of the eccentric Crocodile Harry, this underground museum offers a unique glimpse into his life and the local opal mining industry. The dugout is filled with Harry's sculptures, paintings, and decades of visitor graffiti.
Well worth the visit. Everywhere you look there is something weird and wacky to look at.

$10 entry fee, a weird, crazy, wonderful collection of items. It was really fun to walk around and had a beautiful dog waiting to say hi to everyone

This place has seen better days. It now seems it's become someone's money spinner. Absolutely no information as to who/what/where Crocodile Harry is/was. $10 per person to look around a dusty/unloved/unkempt underground bunch of graffiti filled rooms was definitely not worth the money or the time. Find somewhere else to visit and just Google the information on this place.

If you see only one place in Coober Pedy, make it Crocodile Harry's!! This place is AMAZING! He was such an incredibly eccentric but interesting bloke. His cave home is a history piece and there would be so many happy travellers with memories of visiting this place. Their messages are literally all over the walls. Check it out!

Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Super interesting that's like no other place you've been to before. Make sure to take cash for a donation for entry. Also take a permanent marker to sign your names on the walls. Out of all the places around Coober Pedy this was the most interesting we visited.

Beautiful, full of arts. No need to buy tickets, just an honesty box inside the premises and you can put the entrance amount to the box. No guide, guard or anybody. The google map would guide you to the place, keep cash/ change in hand to put into the honesty box. So beautifully kept. Totally worth the visit.

Definitely worth a visit. Had just exploring the somewhat untouched dugout. I read that Harry passed away in 2006, there are still clothes In drawers, utensils, photo albums of Harry and the girls he slept with. People leave things there but don’t take or trash the place. Their guy was clearly an obsessed predator so I’m sure what to think about it.

Churches & Cathedrals
The Catacomb Church in Coober Pedy is a remarkable underground place of worship, originally built by Greek Orthodox immigrants in the 1950s. Carved into the hillside, it offers a unique sanctuary for reflection and peace. With a seating capacity of around 100 people, it remains cool throughout the year without any air-conditioning system. Visitors appreciate its serene atmosphere and often find it worth comparing to other dugout churches in the area.
We arrived on Sunday morning just as the pastor was opening it. He very kindly gave us a little tour and described some of the features. The church is simply furnished, but the atmosphere was pleasant. It is dug out completely through the side of a hill, and even in summer I'm told the temperature is mild.

The Catacomb Church in Coober Pedy is a remarkable testament to human ingenuity and spiritual devotion, uniquely situated within the opal-rich landscapes of South Australia. Carved into the sandstone during the 1970s, this underground Anglican church offers visitors a serene and contemplative environment, shielded from the harsh desert climate. Upon entering, one is greeted by the church’s minimalist yet profound design. The natural rock walls, subtly illuminated, create an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence. Visitors have noted the church’s simple decor as “truly beautiful,” drawing parallels to the ancient catacombs of Rome . A highlight for many is the warm hospitality extended by the church community. Personal tours led by the reverend or knowledgeable members provide deep insights into the church’s history and the broader context of Coober Pedy’s underground lifestyle . These interactions enrich the visitor experience, offering a personal touch that resonates with many. The Catacomb Church stands as a symbol of adaptation, reflecting how the residents of Coober Pedy have harmoniously integrated their spiritual practices with the demands of their environment. It’s more than just a place of worship; it’s a cultural landmark that encapsulates the resilience and creativity of its community. For those exploring the unique subterranean world of Coober Pedy, the Catacomb Church is an essential stop. Whether you’re drawn by faith, history, or architecture, this underground sanctuary offers a profound and memorable experience.

Catacomb Church of Coober Pedy Visited on 5/6/2019 On a sign board it says the church is "named after the Catacombs of Rome, where early Christians buried their dead and met undisturbed in times of persecution. Catacomb Church is an underground church dugout, with seating capacity around 100 people. It is cool all year round, without any air-conditioning system, except an electric pedestal fan. When it comes to oxygen supply, the church has simple ventilation shaft built into the rock to keep air flowing from the outside into the hall below.

Absolutely fascinating story of a woman's survival and how she positively thrived in what must have been a male dominated, tough mining town. Kudos to her! And the stylish and imaginative home she designed and built stands as a testament to her strength and free spirit. 💜

Loved Faye’s!!!! The tour guide was fabulous, the underground home and adjoining mine told with the personal story of fabulous Faye in the raging 70’s along with accompanying photos provided a brilliant experience. We were a family of mum dad and a 7 year old and each one of us thought it was a top notch experience. We would highly recommend getting to see this while you are in Coober Pedy. Motel
Mud Hut Motel offers unpretentious accommodations in mud buildings, some of which come with kitchenettes. Guests appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, as well as the clean and spacious rooms. The motel is known for its accommodating attitude towards pets, making it a great choice for travelers who don't want to leave their furry friends behind. While some rooms may have maintenance issues, overall it provides a comfortable and inviting place to stay after a day of travel.
Outstanding stay at the Mud Hut Motel! We couldn’t have been happier with our stay! We had a family room with our two dogs and our child, and it was absolutely perfect — clean, comfortable, and wonderfully spacious. The room had everything we needed after a long drive, and it felt so welcoming and well cared for. The staff were incredibly helpful and kind, even though we arrived after hours. They made check-in so easy and went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. The location was also fantastic — close to everything in town but still quiet and relaxing. It’s not easy to find pet-friendly accommodation that’s this spotless and well-run, and the Mud Hut Motel exceeded all our expectations. We’ll definitely be staying here again next time we’re in Coober Pedy!
Steffi H — Google review
We stayed here for 3 nights. This motel is located close to most major attractions in Coober Pedy. There are service stations, restaurants, pizza shops and one supermarket close by. The room was spacious, clean, and tidy with clean, comfortable beds. There was good hot water and room heating with parking space provided right in front. Late/ after-hours self check in was hassle free for us with room keys kept inside a safe (information for obtaining the keys provided via text). The only negatives during our stay were: 1) Water was leaking from the side of the bathroom washbasin, emanating from the hot water tap and dripping on the floor (while using the water only). We tried to contain it by placing towels around the sink. The bathroom also looked a bit dated and could do with some upgrades. 2) The room fan blades had a layer of visible dust. I'm glad we didn't have to use it being in winter. Overall, this motel is pretty good for a comfortable/relaxed stay in Coober Pedy.

🏨 Comfortable Stay in the Heart of Coober Pedy A great place to base yourself while exploring Coober Pedy! The rooms are clean, comfortable, and well-equipped with handy amenities like a microwave, fridge, and kettle—everything you need for a convenient stay. The ever-present dust is part of the outback charm, though, so just embrace it with a smile. 😂 All in all, a solid and cozy spot to recharge after a day of adventure. Oh and be on the lookout for the friendly resident Cat .

Had a very comfortable 3-day stay at the Mud Hotel. The room was spacious, clean, and nicely set up with everything we needed. The bathroom was spotless and well-equipped ,much better than expected, especially for a small outback town. The bed was comfortable, and the overall setup made it easy to relax after a long day of exploring Coober Pedy. Check-in was smooth with the key box system, and the location was perfect just a few minutes’ walk from shops, restaurants, and main attractions. It was quiet at night, and everything worked perfectly. Really happy with the stay and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Coober Pedy!

The room was spacious. The only problem was that some of the ceiling lights were very dim. Other than that, there was nothing negative. Everything was clean and the room had all that was needed for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed our stay.
Douglas C — Google review
Clean and tidy, with individually controlled heating and cooling in each room. The room had two power strips with USB ports. There’s a friendly cat at the property. The only issue might be the room’s door lock — it occasionally gets stuck. Sometimes it’s hard to get out, and other times hard to get in. Also, the way the lock is installed raises a slight security concern.

Welcome to Coober Pedy

4.6
(223)
As you approach Coober Pedy from the south, you'll spot the iconic 'Welcome to Coober Pedy' sign on the left side of Stuart Highway. This spot is a favorite among visitors for snapping photos to share their arrival in this unique opal mining town on social media. To avoid crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or at sunset. The area is an expansive open space with no shade or shelter, so be prepared for hot and windy conditions.
Spent 2 nights in Coober Pedy and am I glad I did! What a magical and down to earth place. Loved the cultural mix this town has from various folks who came here to try their hand! There are so many lovely folks operating businesses, tours and services. The landscape around is outer worldly - I can see why many movies are shot here. The sky is amazing day or night, morning or evening it’s alive with colours. If you ever have the chance to visit - do it!
Keran M — Google review
A must-stop photo op when arriving in one of Australia’s most unique towns! The Welcome to Coober Pedy sign is more than just a road sign—it’s a symbol that you’ve officially arrived in the opal capital of the world. Located just at the edge of town on the Stuart Highway, it’s the perfect place to pause, stretch your legs, and snap that iconic photo with the big Coober Pedy truck and the arid, outback landscape in the background. The sign itself features a massive old mining truck perched on top, paying homage to the town’s rich opal mining history. It’s bold, quirky, and unmistakably Coober Pedy. There’s usually plenty of space to safely pull over and park for a quick photo, and it’s a great spot to take a breather after a long stretch of driving through the South Australian outback. Whether you’re entering or leaving the town, the sign gives you a real sense of the adventure and resilience this place represents. I also appreciated that the area around the sign is well-maintained, with clear visibility for both day and night photos (especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset when the sky turns orange and pink). If you’re documenting your outback journey, this stop is essential. Don’t miss it!

Coober Pedy was a quick trip through to pick up some Opal Earrings and a quick ride around town. There are some very quirky places there. I was blown away with the mounds around the town. It looks like termite holes all over the place.
Donna D — Google review
There’s a quirky, almost post-apocalyptic feel to the town: rusted car parts turned into sculptures, opal shops lining dusty streets, and the haunting beauty of the Moon Plain and Breakaways just outside town. Don’t miss a tour of the opal mines or a sunset over the Breakaways—it’s like watching the Earth change color. Coober Pedy isn’t polished or glamorous. It’s raw, authentic, and wonderfully weird. Perfect for adventurers, photographers, or anyone looking for something truly different.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this unique and captivating destination, and I must say it exceeded all of my expectations. From the moment I arrived, I was immediately taken in by the charm and intrigue of the place - there is so much to see and explore! One of the highlights of my visit was the fantastic photo opportunities that this location offers. I found the setting to be absolutely picturesque, and I was able to capture some truly stunning photos. What's more, I was delighted to find that the area was not crowded, allowing me to easily find parking right beneath the main attraction. It provided me with a sense of tranquility and peacefulness that I truly appreciated. While there may not be an abundance of activities to partake in at this spot, I found that to be part of its allure. It allowed me to truly unwind, relax, and take in the beauty of my surroundings. I recommend stopping by, especially if you are passing by in your car - it's definitely worth the visit!

Riba's Underground Camping & Caravan Park is a pet-friendly site offering both powered and unpowered sites. Visitors can enjoy flexibility in choosing their parking spot, free hot showers, and beautiful desert landscaping. The park is conveniently located just a short drive from town. Guests can also take an authentic mine tour and explore the underground TV room with free WiFi. The friendly hosts provide clean facilities, including showers, toilets, laundry, and washing machines.
My husband and me travel the Stuart Highway and arrived at Riba’s after a long drive through the hot desert. We booked a powered site on the website without shade due to the size of our Van, and were super happy when the owner offered us one of the taller shaded spots instead. The prizes are really fair, the campground is lovely maintained (we loved the cactus gardens) and the bathrooms are very clean. We slept extremely well and felt peaceful so close to nature. It was a true highlight for us to be here! The underground tent sites looked spectacular. If we travelled by tent this would have been such a special place for us to camp.

Canadian traveler. Arrived here twice for a round trip to Uluru. First time nearly ran out of diesel on the way in, reception gave me some options if needed which was appreciated. On my return trip, I wasn't able to book a powered site, but they were able to hook me up when I asked while checking in. Online booking was straightforward and trouble-free. Facilities are decent and well kept, I like that the sites were somewhat at lower level to keep the wind down. Area felt safe and quiet. Never camped in this environment before, but it was a positively unique experience. I would definitely recommend this park!

A very cool place to camp and was great to tick off my bucket list. Above ground it's a pretty standard outback caravan park with good facilities. Camping underground is a cool experience. Beware, if you're camping underground it's eerily quiet but anything you do makes alot of noise and there is lots of other campers around you so you'll need to be quiet and whisper, as it feels like night down there all day! Not good if youre claustrophobic! But awesome none the less!
Jack L — Google review
Excellent campsite. So good we stayed twice! Unpowered site has two options: under the stars or underground. We did both. The underground is wonderful for constant temperature and no wind. An experience you have to try. Above ground you get to enjoy the sounds of the desert, and the stars. For tents, be aware the ground in both locations is compacted sand with pebbles. Recommend a tough groundsheet and drill-in pegs (outside, no pegs needed inside if it’s a free-standing tent). Amenities are excellent: the camp kitchen has shade cloth sides to protect from flies and the wind. Gas stoves and grills work well. Bathroom clean and showers strong. Towels dry in minutes in the sun and wind on the clothes line out the back. TV room is surreal, set deep into the rock. It’s cozy and a great temperature any time of day. And sunset/sunrise you can enjoy from the easy to access lookout. Overall highly recommended

Unique campground a little bit out of the town centre. Service was friendly and the facilities were clean. Unluckily for us we experienced an extremely windy night in our rooftop tent, luckily it didn’t blow off. Thanks for having us!

Nestled just outside of Coober Pedy, Riba’s Camp Underground is a rare find. We arrived minutes before reception closed and were still greeted and guided to a wide, shaded powered site. Booking was effortless, the desert night sky unforgettable, and the on-site opal mine tour led by the owner blends knowledge and charisma into an experience you simply shouldn’t miss. Belgian cheers, Laura & Tim

Would definitely stay again! Amenities are exceptionally clean, sites are spacious that you are not camped on top of each other, staff are helpful and friendly! We also attended the underground tour and had a fantastic time!

Opal City Chinese Restaurant is a popular dining spot in Coober Pedy, Australia. Located in a town known for its underground lifestyle and opal mining, this restaurant offers a diverse menu that caters to locals and visitors alike. With only two gas stations, two grocery stores, and a handful of hotels in the area, Opal City Chinese Restaurant stands out as one of the top dining options.
Really tasty, fresh meal! We were the only folk in the restaurant tonight, but given top quality hospitality on a quiet night. The meals were perfectly sized and filling. Not sure why others have said their meals were small, perhaps they're use to a massive serve of chips... Anyhow, we were overwhelmed by the lovely service and delicious, authentic meals! Thanks for having us.
Gabrielle — Google review
Spent a good $80 on dinner after driving all day and the $19 omelette was not even half a plastic container- it is daylight robbery! All chicken dishes were beef, and I wish I researched before we walked there. Horrible experience- go anywhere but!
Seranna J — Google review
Pricy and taste terrible. I’m from China, this is the most horrible Chinese food I ever eat in my entire life. They fail every detail in the worst way.
Henry — Google review
Not a fan at all. Satay beef sauce was chunky and resembled a oily thick gravy. Beef was tender though. Fried rice was ok but again very oily. Service left alot to be desired - they stood in kitchen peering through curtain saying yes can i help you. Waiting area was boiling hot. Honestly there are significantly better places to eat at. Opal city chinese restaurant please lift your game.
Daniel J — Google review
Food was adequate for its price, small portions, not exactly sure how it passes hygiene standards, with the 3rd world country toilets, felt dirty when we left, owner was plainly rude, watch out for the bouncer cockroach at the front door....he was bloody massive. Definitely will not be back
Tania C — Google review
The vegetables were fresh and the meal was tasty but portion sizes were disappointing . We bought takeaway and both of the containers were not filled properly . We paid for a large rice and only just a little over 3/4 full. They could do better .
Janne M — Google review
The food was good. We had fried rice and prawn with seasonal mixed vegetables. Staff were friendly. We didn’t get knives to cut our food??? Nice overall
Arella N — Google review
2 stars is generous. No atmosphere, no flavour, no customer service skills. As dine in customers we give them 10/10 for comedic value, was like being in a skit from Fawlty Towers. Our bill was more like a donation. Felt sorry for their other customers, like us, all out of towners, no locals, wonder why.

SunsetViewDiner, located at the Italo Australian Miners Club, offers a memorable dining experience with breathtaking sunset views over Coober Pedy. The restaurant is known for its delicious Italian dishes like lamb shanks and beef schnitzel, all made with fresh ingredients. Visitors can enjoy the friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices while savoring their meals at the wooden bar or outside bar area.
Good food, friendly service, live music and a great view of the sunset over town. Drinks are exceptionally well priced. Menu pic was taken in Sept 2022 so prices may have changed. You don't have to be an Italo Australian Miners Club member to eat here, it's open to everyone. Plenty of parking. They're not open every night for dinner, be sure to check.

Fantastic staff and food, don't forget to grab a drink from the bar and checkout the sunset.

I was told how good the view was from the Italian Club at sunset and how reasonable the prices were so I went there to enjoy both of the above mentioned. Met Mary, the one and only staff member of this club who was amazing. When the door opened it was about 44° . She had alot of sympathy for the melting city slickers and served us some icy cold beverages to revive us. While we were there Mary served us, and other patrons, quickly and efficiently, she cleaned and conducted many other tasks associated with bars. Mary even recovered a bottle of stolen plonk from a would be robber. Go there to meet Mary, oh and enjoy the view at sunset

Mines
Toms Opal Mine, also known as Tom's Working Opal Mine, is a renowned attraction in Coober Pedy, South Australia. Since 1940, this mine has been offering visitors an immersive experience into the world of opal mining. Guided tours provide insights into the history and process of mining opals from deep within the earth.
We had an amazing time at Tom’s Working Mine! Paul was a fantastic guide and storyteller, making the tour both engaging and memorable. Mila’s homemade scones at the end were absolutely delicious. A must-do for families with kids or couples looking for a unique experience. Highly recommend!
Shanade C — Google review
Cannot fault this place! If you love a good storyteller, Paul, the guide, is your man. He was so engaging and thoughtful with kids. Mindful of the duration of the tour but always trying to keep the kids busy, amused and engaged. Especially at the end when he was willing to trade some of the gems (or lack of) that they children had found. He’d teach them how to barter and was extremely generous with my two leaving them with a very sentimental treasure each. They (8&10yo) thought it was the best day of their holidays so far. They loved fossicking for the opals. Scones, cuppa and kids got poppers of flavoured milk or juice box with their scone. Twas’ a lovely, homely way to end the tour. The service from Paul’s wife and daughter was exceptional too.
Marta C — Google review
Great outing, get lots of info, very informative. Experienced miner does the tour Hardhat and UV torch supplied for tour. Do the tour, much more informative then the self guided one. Even the dogs could do the mine tour. Kids got special treatment, they even founds some opals with their special torches. After tour lovely barista coffee and scones, even glutenfree available. Lovely caring owners who make everyone feel welcome Great display of raw and polished opal. Great variety for purchase Best place to visit in Cooper Pedy!!
Manuela K — Google review
Excellent visit, and as a self guide type of guy I thought is was good value. Plenty to see for sure. To top it off they give a UV torch to use to spy all that Opal still in the walls and ceiling. This place feels as though it goes way underground, you come across the original shafts along the way, and some Carey on going down further. The machines on show must of made the process quicker but I bet no more enjoyable! A very good visit, with a spot of noodling to be had on the way out!
Paul S — Google review
Good experience and excellent story telling from the guide while visiting the mine. Drinks and scones provided after the tour. Decent opal souvenirs from affordable to the upper range (deciding whether to buy an opal or travel overseas). Whilst visiting the mine, there will be little opal bits for the kids to pick up. If you're visiting with kids keep them at the front, otherwise your kids will end up not being able to pick up any and well, you know what happens next. Noodling pit at the car park. Ample parking, toilet is at the entrance.
Louis K — Google review
⛏️ Authentic Opal Mine Experience If you’re curious about the world of opals, this guided tour is a must. Set in a real, working opal mine, it offers a fascinating inside look at the entire mining process—from extraction to the finished gem. The guide shares detailed, easy-to-follow explanations, making it both educational and engaging. Keep in mind, the tour ventures underground into enclosed and dusty areas, so it’s best suited for those comfortable in tight spaces. After the tour, be sure to check out the onsite shop for a great range of opal products and souvenirs—a sparkling way to remember the experience.
Meth H — Google review
This would be a most highly recommended place to visit, reasonably priced and wealth of knowledge, fantastic for kids also as they get to hunt for opal then sit down and do a deal to sell what they found, or keep. excellent tour.

St Peter & St Paul Catholic Church in Coober Pedy is a unique underground church that offers a different and intimate experience compared to traditional churches. The hospitable atmosphere created by Father Paul makes visitors feel at home, while the quaint layout and quiet ambiance provide a peaceful place for solace. Never met these folks before... rang up yesterday to ask for a bacon and egg sanga on toasted whole grain with a large VERY HOT cappo. 10 mins to spare. Turned up and it was all ready too go. The lady and her partner were really friendly so I gave them $20 bucks for their $15.50 bill. Went back to my car, as the flys were starting to bite and enjoyed a Very nice brekky , thankyou folks, I will support you into the future xo
Patrick K — Google review
This place was recommended to me by a local as it supposedly has the best coffee in town. First, I ordered a hot skinny cappuccino in a cup. However, I found it to be on the weak side. After having had the egg, bacon, and cheese muffin (very nice), I ordered another hot cappuccino, this time in a mug. It was much better, and with two shots of coffee, well worth the extra $0.50. There are also a variety of items for sale. Staff are friendly and prices reasonable.
Emmy S — Google review
I really wanna support local businesses so came to this little cafe. They have a beautiful front but unfortunately it’s the worst breakfast I’ve ever had in the last 5 years. Dairy free for me but this avocado toastie doesn’t even come with real avocado! It’s the cheap avocado paste from supermarket! And scramble egg is dry and fishy. Dairy free shouldn’t make so much difference to a meal. I’m not expecting a fancy breakfast in the outback but this meal is not acceptable for almost $20 pp. Not sure if they changed a chef or what. The food is absolutely different from what is in the reviews.
Judy Z — Google review
Great BLT’s, as the tomatoes, lettuce were fresh. The bacon was tasty, and they had plenty of sauce. Coffee was rich and flavoursome. Quaint location, with cute little yellow faced birds hanging about. Ladies working here were both friendly and quick with their service. Highly recommend.

The spaceship in Coober Pedy is a unique tourist attraction that gained fame as a movie set for the 2000 sci-fi film Pitch Black. It was used for external shots of the crashed transporter and has since become a popular backdrop for photos. Despite its current state, it remains an intriguing sight, especially for fans of the movies it appeared in.
If you have seen the movie you have to go there. The kids loved it too.
Peter T — Google review
I was not familiar with the film this was a prop out of (Pitch Black) but my partner was very excited to see this spaceship parked up in a random yard you can drive right up to in Coober Pedy. It is looking a bit worse for wear but if you know the film this will excite you!
J S — Google review
It was great to see this. Went and watched the movie again. It was bad. Lol

Space ship model build for shooting the movie pitch black is kept mear to Opal museum. Its good for taking pictures
Joshy M — Google review
Spaceship at Coober Pedy Visited on 5/6/2019 No, this spaceship has nothing to do with Australia's participation in space program, neither did it fall the sky. If you think you are at Woomera Rocket Park, you are wrong again. The space ship is the set used for the external shots of the crashed transporter in the movie Pitch Black, filmed in Coober Pedy. It was bought by a local businessman soon after filming was completed. Since then the spaceship is sitting outside the Opal Cave store, set in semi-Martian surrounding. It is a pity that a pop-up caravan from the neighbour is parked so close to Spaceship and spoils a good snap shot.

Nobody in the shop, old, guy looks homeless. Not very sure about hygiene. I can’t really review the food because I stepped out the moment I saw wha the shop looked like. A real mess. Not a single person in the shop. The sign has faded, and I feel it has fallen into disrepair. Not very friendly.
