Park
Queen Elizabeth Park is a charming family park with various attractions for all ages. Established in 1877, the park offers a delightful experience for visitors. It features children's play structures, a duck pond, and a mini-golf course. The Hosking Garden showcases beautiful blooms, while majestic trees add to the park's allure. Visitors can enjoy activities such as train rides, paddle boating on the lake, and feeding ducks and deer.
Fabulous park! One of the best parks we have been to I think ❤️ the children absolutely loved it and the train and the lake is just great so much to do. Great fenced in safe area for little ones etc. The flying fox could do with a bit of maintenance though I think it was pretty loose when we were there but that's really the only constructive criticism I've got.
Laura M — Google review
Beautiful winter day spent at Queen Elizabeth Park after camping nearby. Stopped here for breakfast and a roam around. Pleasantly surprised by the deer park and abundance of bird life around the lake. Good place to relax on your trip.
Louis — Google review
This is a charming little park with a lake and a miniature railway (not running the day I visited) there is also a children's play park and a cricket green with a grandstand. Amongst other items of interest are a "Tuna Circle" (Tuna in Te reo Maori is an eel not a fish) and a rather crude statue entitled "thinker". There is also the preserved stump of an enormous tree which was around a hundred years old when struck buy lightening which forced its demise (I only photographed one half because the other had been vandalised with graffiti).
Bernard S — Google review
What a beautiful park, would have loved a park like this when I was growing up! Enjoyed feeding the red deer and fallow deer oats and carrots and the cakes and coffee from the cafe were delicious.
Helen C — Google review
The train wasn't running :( Deer park was good was always Am glad the swing bridge got Re strengthened (walking part) but the netting could have done with a tidy up but understand they not gonna replace it as people like to put Paddocks on it. Wondering when and if the park is going to have a refresh. And the ice cream truck was out which was nice since it was a nice sunny day
Kelsi H — Google review
beautiful park with some crazy ducks you can watch, deers on the other side of the bridge and on some days even a miniature train 😊

Great walk around the park, pathways going off in several directions so lots of options

As a founding member and dedicated participant of ConArt, I highly recommend visiting this exceptional destination in Wairarapa. Located at the heart of MASTERTON's Arts Precinct, the gallery and working artists' studios are open from Wednesday to Sunday, showcasing a diverse array of top-notch artwork created by talented local artists. The collection encompasses various forms such as garden art, wall art, jewelry, pottery, woodwork and more.
I enjoyed meeting the artists and bought a beautiful painting from special artist Lindy McClachlan. Aratoi Museum has such a lovely display currently and is always interesting.

A wonderful range of quality crafted art by Wairarapa artists'. A very high standard. Very well priced. Garden art, wall art, jewellery, pottery, wood and more. The containers are a work of art and such a great concept..

Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History offers a diverse range of exhibits, showcasing the region's history with Māori artifacts alongside contemporary artwork. Visitors can also enjoy a tasting at the cellar door, which sells honey and olive oil. The museum features an impressive collection of art, including works by local artists like Natasha Cousens. Housed in an old church, this small yet intriguing space is free to enter and always has something new to offer.
Popped in on passing through town and happened upon the Rita Angus exhibition on opening night. A well worth visit.

We went into the gift shop with the purpose of buying a gift of something local for our out of town friends, but the 2 ladies sitting at the desk were sure to announce the second we entered the door way (3.50pm) they would be closing soon. Obviously they were in too much of a hurry to go home than serve customers. It was a disgusting experience, I will never return.

The Masterton i-SITE Visitor Information Centre is staffed by a highly friendly and knowledgeable young lady who provides exceptional assistance. Trevor also had a pleasant conversation with Malcolm at the cafe next door. The counter lady at the center exhibits an impressive understanding of the area and possesses a great sense of humor, making her interactions enjoyable. This information hub serves as a starting point for mountain biking in Wairarapa, offering valuable recommendations from the helpful staff as well as useful literature.
Very friendly and extremely helpful. I came in with a bike problem and Sarah went out of her way to find someone who could sort out the problem. She has great regional knowledge and I highly recommend this i-Site.
Andrew B — Google review
Sadly, Lisa, who was so knowledgeable and helpful, no longer works at the Masterton i-site. The current staffers were not very helpful, resourceful, or motivated to assist me with my questions about getting a Snapper card, or using the train to Wellington, taking the local buses, or finding coach tours. So I went to the Masterton Library, where the ladies there were eager to assist and be useful. The library hours are more accommodating and they don't close for a long lunch, either. Get current and correct information from the gracious locals at the cafe next door, the Museum, or New World folks, and avoid the i-site staff.

Additionally, guests can purchase unique merino wool products such as hats and original T-shirts from the on-site shop. Absolutely loved our trip to this museum! Beautiful way to understand more about the shearing process and tradition in NZ. We will be back for sure!

Piece of history. Very dated, but interesting little museum. Not just about wool and sheep, there's other surprises too like steam engine. There's se interactive exhibits. Also there is fire brigade history museum to look at too although it is much smaller than other part of museum. Kids had fun checking everything out.

(Translated by Google) Nice little place to watch traditional crafts, try out the shearing tools, feel the different qualities of wool and watch competitions in videos. It is advisable to ask for a sheep shearing demonstration in advance and attend these dates or go with a larger group and ask for a demo. The hats or original T-shirts made of merino wool, which you can buy in the shop, are also interesting. Awesome park but needs an up grade and add more thing new to the park. Needs lighting for the dark nights to glow up in the night like Disney World. It would keep it name as one of the great parks around the bottom of the north island. I would say it needs cleaning water sprey and a pain to brighten up the castle of Masterton then lights from ground up all with in the playground 😍

A great playground at QE2 park Masterton. Over the road from the Masterton town pools, next door to a mini putt and close to the Park Island Miniature train where rides are still only one dollar. Bring bread for the ducks and deer or something for the eels in the park lake. Cafe and supermarket nearby. Spend a day at the park

Masterson park is awesome all round, Great park for all aged kids, Then there's the Mini Golf that merges with the park, a huge green for family's to sit and eat while kids play, The new sn awesome Skatepark across the green, The quaint stream that runs through to the big duck pond, where there's a few spieces of bird calling it home, plus lurking underneath is our awesome eels, the kids love seeing them in the stream on there journey to the pond, there is a small train ride for kids that goes round the pond and also there's a small boating business that hires out paddle boats to paddle round the pond and feed the swans an ducks, its really sweet and fun for the kids and each entertainment option around the park that's the pool included its all fairly priced, which is great as we all know its getting more an more expensive to be able to do the added adventures, most families for anything really big we have to travel to wellys or palmmy an here the movies an bowling is to getting really up there, so It's great there's still a few options for us at home, wairarapa's city, Hopefully can keep upgrading for the youth.. and the parents that are big kids 😄

We received a Pad Thai, Chicken Skewers and Satay Sauce through the deliver easy app locally. The Pad Thai was horrible, no taste, almost tasted like the chicken and noodles had been boiled, thrown into the takeaway container with no flavour. It was white, the noodles and chicken, you'd expect a lovely Pad Thai sauce with a brown glaze throughout but no sauce, nothing. Sorry but it was frickin terrible.

We are confident to say this is by far the best Thai restaurant we have tried in New Zealand. The dishes tasted very authentic. Entice Café & Catering in Masterton is a must-visit spot for those with a craving for both sweet and savory delights. Whether you're exploring the Shear History Museum, Aratoi Museum and Art Gallery, or -Site visitor center nearby, this café is an ideal stop from breakfast to afternoon tea. Additionally, they offer catering services for various events including weddings and business functions.
We were on our way to Golden Shears for the very first time and had been given a voucher to spend at Entice Cafe while in town. Arriving at noon on a Saturday with Golden Shear right next door having their break for lunch, we expected to walk into a crowded cafe with stressed out staff. Boy were we in for a shock. Yes there were not many free tables BUT the staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and happy to see us. We ordered drinks, omelette and Eggs Florentine. Everything arrived quick and hot and delicious. We loved out lunch thanks. But we loved the welcome even more.

Lovely location, food was expensive & disappointing. Lemon slice was so sweet I couldn't eat it even with the very tart plain yoghurt. Its card said it came with cream or yogurt, which I had to ask for as it was just dumped on the plate & handed to me. Did not enjoy the nachos, very, very dry, not enough sour cream & way too much cheese, seasoning, salt, chives or parsley would have made it slightly better. It wasn't worth what I paid. Coffee was average & bitter. No raw or coffee sugar available (I don't do white sugar in coffee). Won't be back.
T W — Google review
Entice is my go to for coffee - it’s always consistent and made how I like by all the girls. The Friands are my little takeaway treats and when I’m feeling hungrier, the Chicken Ciabatta in the cabinet is always my pick, soooo yummy! The new menu is pretty good too, always love their brekkys. A place where I’ve always been able to take my children too, really handy having both stair and ramp access. The patio is lovely with a good view of the park on a sunny day.

Good coffee (large 5.20$). The small lemon slice cost 5.30$ so slightly on the expensive side. ==== Visited again 22-10-20 Mushrooms with salmon 22$ and a flat white 5$ . Taste was ok size was small I’d say. ==== 24-10-20 Raspberry friand with coffee 11$ .. definitely expensive I’d say.

Friendly helpful and accommodating staff! Drinks came quickly and food was delicious! A little bit loud inside but still a pleasant experience!

I ordered the Entice Breakfast and large mocha with soya milk. I would describe the whole breakfast as average. The bacon was a bit over cooked making it unpleasant to eat. The egg was not runny and I explicitly asked for it to be poached and runny. I did not enjoy my eggs over cooked. The coffee was also average. There is nothing special about this breakfast and I would not order it again.

The Farriers Bar & Eatery is a versatile establishment in Masterton, offering a combination of a pub, bar, pizzeria, and restaurant. It has been recognized as one of the best dinner spots in the area and is highly regarded for its delicious food and efficient service. Located at 4 Queen Street, it's a popular choice among locals and visitors alike.
We came for dinner on a Tuesday night. It was lit up and welcoming as we arrived. The service was friendly and welcoming to match, the meals (especially the burgers) were large and tasty, the kids had something to colour in and a suitable menu. The decor was consistent with the farrier theme and nicely done. Would happily repeat. For where it sits in the dining out market, it delivered well.

Service good as was atmosphere. My concern was asking for a gluten free pizza advertised on the menu, but initially the chef refused to cook the pizza, didn't want to take responsibility. In the end he cooked it, unfortunately it was quite bland.

Superb place for a drink or meal with friends and family. Took the kids here and while they enjoyed their kids menu I was flabbergasted at the sheer size of my chicken burger. Thankfully it was delicious, as was the kids pizza. Spacious and modern - spotted at least four separate areas to hangout - I can imagine the place is heaving when busy, and based on the quality of the food and service I’d say that happens pretty regularly. Even the toilets were awesome!
Nirmal G — Google review
The food was great when it eventually arrived. The service however was poor. They've just opened another bar next door which uses the same kitchen and chef, so the service is not great. People with reservations arriving at 6.30pm were told there would be an hour wait for food. Rather go to Lone Star!

A truly special place to visit to see our native wildlife being cared for and released back to the wild. Good food at the cafe, a cute gift shop add to the experience. You can get a guided tour or walk yourself. Stay to see the long finned eels get fed and birds being fed. Worth the drive. You can donate or sponsor if you want to help this important work.

Amazing, fun, and so worth the price! Super impressed with the size of the center and the openess of the facility. They have maps for you to explore on your own, or you can have a guided tour. I spent a few hours just wandering, and saw the most incredible birds. My favorite was the kaka circus, they responded as I whistled to them! Highly recommend!
Alex P — Google review
The motorhome parking was excellent with very clean amenities. The guided tour was interesting, but self guided would have been fine. Some of the birds in aviaties needed patience to spot, but the free flying kaka, kakariki, karearea, kereru and tui were wasy to spot and mostly used to people so easy to photograph.
Julio R — Google review
Well kept place where you can learn a lot about New Zealand birds, and the efforts put into conservation and breeding, to prevent certain species from extinction. They have several aviaries and a kiwi house, where the birds are kept on an inverse night/day schedule. The building is very dimly lit with red light so you will need a couple of minutes to adjust, but we saw a kiwi up close!

Absolutely fascinating place. Totally worth visiting even on a very wet day. We didn't see all the birds but we were thrilled to see what we did. The kiwi were very active and close to the glass so it was possible to get a good look at these amazing little birds

So exiting for this place. There are many lovely animals to observe, some of them are so shy and usually hide from people, but that is the fun thing to seek them. This place also have many desserts and drinks to sell, fair price.

The Mount Bruce Pioneer Museum is an impressive institution with a reasonable entrance fee. It boasts a remarkable collection of historical artifacts relating to farming, culture, technology, and domestic life. The majority of these items date back to the mid- and early 20th century, with some even originating from the 19th century. Additionally, the museum includes a section dedicated to Nordic settlement in the region and features a replica Viking boat.
We loved this place ! It isn't Te Papa more like the countryside version of a museum so if you put aside a bit of dust and a few cobwebs your be amazed at the collection Henry has gathered over 49 years thank you for showing us around amazing job!
Sam A — Google review
Just amazing how many treasures are in this museum from electric truck to old gramophones to farm equipment. Well worth a visit.
Garry C — Google review
This is one of the funnest, funkiest museums I have ever visited! The proprietor, Henry Christensen, has been gathering artifacts for over 50 years, and the museum goes on for miles! Highly recommend this place for a visit - expect to spend an hour at least, worth every penny of the $5 he requests.
WesternSwingOutWest — Google review
Old school private NZ museum on someone's property. Cash only, no EFTPOS! Very dusty and ancient, it's not Te Papa so don't go in expecting it to be. Good value for the entry price of $5 an adult. Looks like it'll not be around much longer as it's not being maintained so visit while you can.
Jayce B — Google review
For only $5 in cash you can see almost everything you can think of our ancestors using in their day to day lives. The Owner, Henry, told us he had been collecting for over 50 years! I was blown away by the sheer amounts of things in the building, from old butter churners to washing machines to dog medicine from the 1920s! He even turned on the old gramophone and washing machines to show us which made my day! I wouldn't recommend bringing children here though, there are a lot of things they couldn't resist touching. Last of all, there are two rooms I wouldn't recommend going into- the 'library' and the top room up the stairs. I do not blame the owner at all as he is a very elderly man but there are a lot of trapped flies and rat droppings in there. The main rooms are clean (as clean as an old barn filled with stuff can be, maybe a bit dusty) but you can see the occasional rat poop in the corners. I hope there is a plan for this museum in the future. It has a unique charm to it and I hope it is preserved!
Emma — Google review
Sad state of affairs infested with rats droppings everywhere Hopefully they can raise enough money to build a proper facilty amazing look though tho. Asked for miney at the end out of the blue followed though area

Such an amazing eclectic collection of NZ household things, farm machinery etc etc. we loved the clutter, the meandering pathway and a surprise at every turn. So nostalgic.
Julio R — Google review
Awesome museum. Very reasonable entry fee, & there is a great collection of material artifacts related to farming, culture, technology & domestic life; predominantly mid- & early 20th century, and also some 19th century. There is also a section with a replica Viking boat, & historical documentation of Nordic settlement in the region. SPOILER the Vogel Government incentivised their migration to deforest the vast tract of bush in the Manawatu, site of the last documented huia sighting in 1907

Mawley Holiday Park

Holiday park
Mawley Holiday Park offers a range of accommodations, including units with private shower, toilet, and kitchenette. The park is conveniently located near Queen Elizabeth Park and Masterton Park, making it an ideal choice for sports competitions or family outings. Guests appreciate the spotlessly clean cabins and communal facilities as well as the friendly and welcoming staff. The park provides various facilities for both adults and kids to enjoy. Visitors also praise the reasonable pricing for their stay in self-contained units or ensuite cabins.
Powered sites are well spaced out and affordable. Male receptionist is super friendly & helpful. Bathroom/shower cubical was always clean (probs some of the best I’ve stayed in whilst touring NZ). Only downside was during our stay the main gates weren’t locked at night time so quite often had punters walking through the park but all in all a great stay. Unfortunately our trip was cut short but would definitely come back here again ☺️

Stayed in camper. Spacious sites, some with shrubbery between them. Very clean and modern individual shower and toilets. A short walk across the bridge into the town. I didn't use the kitchen this stay but it was clean and well equipped last time we stayed

Stayed with hubby and kids was ok except for dope smell coming from caravan most of the day nextdoor to washing machines and dryers shouldn't have to explain to the kids what it was young. staff were great

Three of us stayed in one of the bunk accommodation huts. It was clean and very comfy. As we were cycling through, it was easy to get to the supermarket and then cook good in the communal kitchen. It was peaceful at night and we enjoyed our stay. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Coralie N — Google review
Very tidy unit. They have a really good management plan for security around the park and allocated car pack who stay in the unit. The kitchen is slightly too small and too slow for a family of 4 to cook a meal. Other than that, it's a very nice play to stay.

Stayed in our motorhome on a powered site. Bathrooms and shower block is in need of a major refurbishment. Location is great. Supermarket and cafes close by.

Obviously not a nice place to stay bathrooms need work lawns not good gardens a mess looks like full timers can have ripped awnings nothing done was going to put good feedback on until we all heard abusive behavior against one of the young workers lovely young girl helpful but as again one of the messy full timers has verbally abused her when I went this morning the nothing has been done needs new management

MasterBowl is a lively entertainment spot where you can enjoy various activities like ten-pin bowling, bumper cars, and arcade games. It's a great place for birthday parties with its fun arcade games and exciting bumper car rides. Although the food might not be the highlight, the overall experience promises an enjoyable time for visitors.
Love it. We celebrated few birthdays here and enjoyed playing ten pin bowling. It is must for weekends public holidays or even if you wish to pick it up as a sport. Great place. Do check it out. Food is good too and they serve quite variety of drinks.
Pedja S — Google review
I first started bowling here. The crew is super friendly and nice. Darrin the lane owner has also given me some really good tips from the beginning which helps me building up my skills. They also run league too which maintain a very good spot to bring people together. Genuinely love this place!
S C — Google review
Run down and experience. Pin setting machines malfunction , Bowling balls are rubbish and most resemble rough rocks. video games in arcade area are also past there use by date.
Anthony O — Google review
Awesome... although I thought it was very pricey...it was worth it to see miss 3 and dad have alittle bonding time for fathersday. Food was nice n owners were nice too.
Ripeka H — Google review
We visited on a day that allowed us all in at children rates. The person on the front desk was helpful and friendly. Other staff were less so. They were not easily identified and reluctant to make eye contact in case we asked them for help. The lane we were first put on was faulty - it wasn’t resetting the pins and then the bowls got stuck in the return, and we spent a lot of time waiting to get it fixed until we asked to be moved lanes. The new lane had no issue but seating was broken and limited. But we didn’t spend a lot of money, it was busy and once we switched lanes we had a good time. We didn’t eat there and we didn’t play the arcade games so can’t comment on them. I would go back as it was enjoyable and $50 for a family was an ok amount to spend.
Amanda G — Google review
Expensive and very out dated but probably the only place to bowl in Masterton. The hotchips were delicious tho!
Sam R — Google review
A fun afternoon for a family group. Recommend you try it!
Kate L — Google review
Had a game of bowling which was great. The balls are a little old (not so smooth) but they did the job. 10 rounds and the kids were ready to go. We were then told about the arcade next to the alley. Our Kids loved it, some really old school games which felt new to them. $1 or $2 games. We ordered some hot chips and milkshakes which were awesome, the fries were a generous amount and the milkshakes tasted perfect just like they were back in the 80's. Can't wait to go back and maybe try the pizzas next.

Our regular Saturday coffee and fluffy venue. The staff are super friendly, the coffee is delicious, and the food is spectacular.

Don Luciano Café – A Masterton Gem Don Luciano Café is, without a doubt, the best café in town. The coffee is consistently high quality, and the staff are not only professional and friendly, but clearly passionate and knowledgeable about what they do. Being just a short walk from my workplace, I find myself visiting regularly in the mornings. While the pricing is on the higher side—for example, an iced latte sits around $8 compared to the $6 standard elsewhere—the difference in quality is immediately noticeable and well worth the extra cost. The portion sizes may appear modest at first glance, but they offer a well-balanced and satisfying amount. A special mention must go to the lady behind the counter, who is an absolute standout. Even during the busy morning rush around 8 a.m., she handles the flow of customers with calmness, kindness, and genuine interest in how your day is going. Her warm service adds something truly special to the overall experience. This café remains my go-to spot while working in Masterton, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for quality coffee, great service, and a consistently welcoming atmosphere.

Henley Lake Park is a picturesque recreational park featuring a central lake surrounded by trails and picnic areas. The lake, about 3 kilometers long, offers opportunities for cycling, walking, or running around it. Families can enjoy picnics and kids can play in the designated areas. The park provides amenities such as toilets, showers with warm water, drinking water fountains, and rubbish bins. It's an ideal spot for walking, biking, kayaking on the lake, or even playing disc golf.
Perfect for cyclists and walkers. Several access options, Te Ore Ore Rd, Dixon Street or Colombo Road, they all connect on the circuit.

Great place to go for a walk. When with a group of other mums. Is pram friendly :) Parking is adequate. Would be nice if there was maybe a medium sized playground for kids to play on. And there was less duck poo on the path from what I remember when going for walks around when attending Lakeview school (over 15 years ago)

During a delightful encounter on the Picton ferry, I discovered The Pointon Collection in Masterton, a hidden gem for vintage car enthusiasts. This museum boasts an impressive array of 42 meticulously restored vehicles and motorcycles from the early to mid-20th century. The owner, Francis, is not only passionate about his collection but also possesses an incredible wealth of knowledge about each piece. As I wandered through the exhibits, I was captivated by the stunning craftsmanship of these classic cars and bikes.
Cash only, which we didn't know until we got there. Personalise tour, which was great. Good value. Do support these venues as it's all they have to keep them functioning.

Guests are welcomed by friendly staff who provide an informative and enjoyable tasting experience without any pressure to purchase.
We always get fabulous service from the team at Johner. Although we can’t visit during lockdown, the online deliveries are keeping us well supplied with excellent vintages. Arranging a special delivery for our son-in-law’s birthday went above and beyond. I can’t recommend them highly enough!! A 2025 update: Johner is still our favourite vineyard and it’s nice to be able to visit in person again. Kat is always friendly and helpful and we continue to be impressed by the service and, of course, the wines.

Well worth the drive down the gravel road to visit Johner Estate. We ordered some of the stunning Pinot Noir to be sent home , the delivery was only $10 and even though I vowed to ‘age’ some of the bottles , I have to confess that the photo reflects my inability to cellar Johner wines 😅

Audrey S — Google review
One of the best vineyards in the Wairarapa 😊 I have visited the Winery a few times now and it never fails to please. The owners are charming and friendly and welcomed us to a wine tasting that I couldn't fault. I loved the wine selection and it was difficult to pick out a few wines to buy. The whites are delicious and the reds are delectable but my favourite was their gorgeous sticky! It is a vineyard that is off the beaten track but the trip is worth it. 👌
Barbara W — Google review
Our first vineyard along the Wairarapa Wine Trail and it didn't disappoint. We met the lovely Kathryn who provided us with a tasting, at no cost. Johner Estate is set in an absolutely beautiful location, and well worth the trip. We tried five or six wines, which Kathryn, being easy to follow, was very informative of and she was very friendly. We made a purchase which was lovely. When we had finished the tasting Kathryn walked us out to our vehicle, chatting along the way and we met a nice chap called Martin. It was a really affectionate, down to Earth experience, with good wine. Our kind of place! @SALTYSKIM

It's a bit of a drive - but that's fun in itself. The rustic-style tasting room is light and airy and has great views across the vineyards. The tasting is comprehensive and the staff have always been accommodating and friendly, but never pushy. The wines are a real mix - some (for me) more miss than hit; others very good and worth buying by the case. And if you do buy a case (mixed varieties or otherwise) the discount makes the value even better, because all the wines are well-priced.

We were seated straight away from our booking. A while later, drinks order, then a wait to order mains. Mains took just over 1 hour to arrive and we had no service between taking our order and receiving it. The food would have been the worst i have had from here. Pork was so dry on top, and the entire meal seemed to have gone from a heat lamp to microwave to table. the other meal was so oily. my car has less oil than this meal. No follow-up for drinks or to see how our meal was. Table staff need to serve tables and not camp up in the kitchen area. we counted 5 staff just standing in the kitchen area for a good period of time. Now we know why we got no service. I will never go back again. Tonight's meal makes McDonald's taste really great even though its like cardboard.
