Winton in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Winton, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Winton offers classic Queensland outback scenery, with wide horizons, red dirt landscapes and striking jump-up mesas. It’s a major hub for dinosaur enthusiasts, home to the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum and near the Lark Quarry dinosaur trackways, one of the world’s best-known sets of fossilized footprints. The town is also closely linked to Australian culture and history, with the Waltzing Matilda Centre and connections to early Qantas stories. Visitors can combine museum visits with pub culture, starry night skies and drives through the surrounding Channel Country.
With favorites like Tattersalls Hotel, Australian Hotel Winton, and Waltzing Matilda Centre, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Balamara Bakery and Australian Hotel Winton so you can get the best taste of Winton while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Australian Age of Dinosaurs, located in Winton, Queensland, is a not-for-profit organization that operates the Museum of Natural History. The museum hosts annual dinosaur digs and runs Australia's most productive fossil preparation laboratory. Situated on the edge of a "Jump Up," the museum offers stunning scenery and architecturally brilliant buildings that blend seamlessly with the landscape. Visitors can explore recreated scenes featuring small dinosaur stampedes and gain a deeper understanding of Australian dinosaurs through interactive and engaging experiences.
This was fantastic. We did the 3 tours. First, the Stampede place, then the Canyon tour and Laboratory tour. We had a guide telling us all about the stampede in a river bed, and then we were allowed to walk around the mini canyon with real-life statues, which were fantastic and then a guide to tell how they collect, preserve and clean the fossils. Well worth the visit.
Cherie C — Google review
What an awesome experience. Checked out the laboratory and watched the volunteers cleaning the fossils. Great informative guide. Visited the river stampede and listened to the fabulous interpritations from the guide and imagined the Dinasours walking along. Then walked the valley with the life like models. A perfect day and great facilities for the dog to stay
Ian T — Google review
We absolutely love the Australian Age of Dinosaurs. Highlight was watching and then chatting with the volunteers exposing the fossils. So cool. Actually, everything about this was cool. Make sure you book - the tours are very busy and you cannot visit without a booking.

We took our three kids out to do the Dinosaur Trail, including the Australian Age of Dinosaurs. We had our reservations about the whole trip being worth the 2500km round trip for us from Cairns via Cobbold and Townsville. So far this place makes the whole drive worth it alone. What's even more incredible is that they haven't even built the Australian Museum of Natural history yet. This place was amazing at the time of our visit alone. It's going to be absolutely mind blowing as soon as the museum is built. I believe the addition of the museum will make Winton a must visit town for anyone visiting Australia. We'll just have to come back as they're clearly hard at work making this place even more spectacular right down to ancient vegetation. The attention to detail and architecture is impressive as it compliments the natural beauty of the Jump-up. It's hard to pick a favourite part of this attraction. The aim of our trip was for a scout project. The Laboratory was extremely informative and ticked all the boxes necessary. Everyone there is a volunteer and super friendly. They answered all our questions and it wildly exceeded our expectations. A great place to volunteer for a retirement! The art work is amazing also and makes for great photo opportunities. We walked out with a massive collection of dinosaur stuff. The only draw back is that I didn't know about the star gazing tour. If I'd known I would have booked a head. It was sadly booked out on the day. So that was disappointing. Apart from this amazing!

Top place to go too, it's a must , so much info about Dinosaurs No dogs but dog cages supplied on other side of car park Great display with very knowledgeable staff, did the Ultimate tour Amazing centre in their outback station Nice Cafe in reception with great views. Little buggy bus takes you up through hill to outback station Best tour you can do. You can split the tour up, we did one part in the avo, next part morning so it wasn't too long for dogs to wait. Ring up to make the split arrangements, very friendly staff. Well recommended!!
Manuela K — Google review
The third stop on our family adventure of The Dinosaur Trail, after the Flinders Discovery Centre and the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede. We loved our time at the Age of Dinosaurs (2 ad + 2 tweens). The guides were all friendly and knowledgeable. Facilities were clean, and the selection of gifts and memorabilia was good. The Dinosaur Canyon tour was done very well, telling a nice story of the history as we walked. We booked our trip 6 months in advance, and ended up with tour times that didn't actually exist, in an order that wasn't recommended due to the temperature increasing throughout the day. This meant there was a little confusion when we arrived, but the staff were helpful and sorted it out quickly. Better signage in the carpark would be great to make sure people don't go to the wrong place first, but other than that, it was an absolutely fantastic day and experience.
Danielle Z — Google review
Great spot, dig site, dinosaur bones, seeds, fauna, rock formations, all fabulous. So glad we visited, and spent some time there. The lady in the Laboratory doing the fine detail on items found, was amazing. Sorry I can't remember her name, she's a very talented lady ,degrees etc.! Loved her knowledge, and enthusiasm, discussed queries and had a very informative conversation about life in the area, dinosaurs, opals etc. Would love to have discussed around a fire pit over a glass of wine. The only negative I have is the number of people going thru the Laboratory at one time, which means you try and listen to the guide, and try and see what she's talking about. Very interesting information.
Sue H — Google review
The facility is amazing and we booked the full tour. We all really enjoyed the dinosaur footprints, such an incredible experience! The only downside was the long waits between the three parts of the tour, which made it drag out a bit. We ended up leaving early as we had to get on the road to the next town. Overall, an awesome place, but the tour could definitely run a bit smoother.

The Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, Australia, is a modern facility that pays homage to the beloved Australian ballad "Waltzing Matilda" by A.B. Paterson. The center features interactive exhibits, a cafe, and a theater for visitors to immerse themselves in the story of the swagman as told in the iconic song. With a cost of $3.
Interesting, educational and goes well beyond the song and Banjo. The rock photography exhibit was brilliant. The architecture was interesting, especially the downpipes.
MxR I — Google review
Lovely museum about how the Matilda came about. Lots of videos and displays to watch and read and listen too, a few things learnt I never knew - Also has a big museum complex about life in Winton and the region and how people lived over the last century, some of that interesting, some not so - Cafe closed Monday’s - Souvenir shop had a few trinkets
David H — Google review
I absolutely loved this place, now with the story and history of this great song in my head, I'll forever be moved every time I hear it played. The history & display of the outback life at the centre is excellent as well. Highly recommend, take your time to embrace the whole experience.

Very interesting story about the song. Lots of memorabilia to see Expensive to get in $35 adult $30 concession

Positively brilliant. A beautiful tribute to Australian history. A “must do” for everyone. Give yourself a couple of hours. There is a good cafe right there as well.
Helen S — Google review
Really great. Indoor and outdoor exhibits and a big range of topics covered. We spent almost 4 hours there, so good value. Good affordable Cafe as well.

Great centre, lots of information about Winton and surrounds. Really disappointing that the coffee shop only stocks long life milk - and didn’t tell us this when we ordered. It doesn’t matter how good the coffee is - long life milk has a strong taste that spoils the coffee. We would have been back 2 or 3 times over the next few days otherwise. Cakes were great.

Beautiful information centre, staff members Grace and Zoe were absolutely fantastic and couldn't do enough to help with information and local knowledge. Lovely cafe at the centre, exceptionally well priced for a tourist destination, food and service was great.

Bar
The Tattersalls Hotel, located on the street corner, is a popular pub where people can gather and socialize. The establishment has a raised veranda under which patrons can sit and enjoy their drinks. It opens early, attracting both locals and tourists who engage in conversations at the open bar. The hotel is highly regarded for its impressive meals that are not only large in portions but also delicious in taste.
Fantastic bar and good food. I travel around Australia a lot for work and came across this spot in Winton, QLD. Pub with a lot of character and welcoming atmosphere. Serves good food and quality Guinness. Excellent service. Wish there were more pubs of this type in every town through Australia. I would recommend to anyone passing through.

Had dinner here while visiting for work and ordered a rump steak with veg and chips which came out quite quickly. Food was delicious and portion sizes were very generous. The only downside was we were swarmed by flies while eating.
Dallas M — Google review
Fantastic dinner meals! Large serves and all delicious! It was a busy night so there was a wait but it was well worth it! Also a lovely atmosphere sitting outside. Crumbed steak was sensational with chunky mushroom sauce.

What a treat!! They make a delicious margarita here and the food is really good. We visited several times while we were in Winton and the gentleman behind the bar remembered our drink order! Love that the entire menu is AU / NZ products. I highly recommend a visit.

The food and service are very good. They pour a fine Guinness. The young barman would be the most friendly, energetic and competent I’ve ever seen. He even remembers your drink when the place is heaving with customers. Highly recommended.

Great Pub Meal , 1/2 serves on some dishes for us oldies , Pet friendly outside, 👍

Tattersall Hotel normally a good feed but after waiting 50min for 2 steak sandwich(we didn’t event want chips)having to ask staff where they were and getting them with cold steak and onions straight out of fridge NOT GOOD. Husband went in to complain and the one taking the orders didn’t really want to know about it. Only reason ate them after removing very cold onion was we paid $50.00 for them and after waiting so long we were hungry

Arno's Wall, located in Winton, is a unique and quirky attraction that showcases the creative imagination of Arno Grotjahn. This modern wonder of art and architecture stretches for at least 70 meters and reaches a height of two meters. Constructed from concrete and rock, the wall is adorned with an eclectic assortment of household items such as vintage car parts, typewriters, kitchen sinks, motorbikes, and more.
An attractive little park that offers some shade from the fierce sun with a wall studded with many and varied items. It’s fun to see just what is in and on the wall, from wheels to engines, the odd sewing machine and many other items. It’s good that people like Arno are celebrated. No toilets, bins or water but it does lead onto the North Gregory Pub.
Paul S — Google review
They profess that every motor was displayed in the wall. We looked for a rotary engine and couldn’t find it. Hopefully they open the back of the wall up one day, so we can see more of it. We enjoyed the experience and recommend paying a visit.
Suzanne C — Google review
An eclectic gathering of all the things you probably shouldn't use to build a wall, artistically used to build a wall, good on ya! Cracker of a job, only reason it isn't 5 stars is it is a wall(I saw a shed through the wall, could be wall and shed, that would be 5 stars)
Luke E — Google review
Quirky, eccentric and free Art installation. Well worth visiting. The adjoining park is green, shaded and peaceful.
Karen N — Google review
Bit past it's prime. Adjacent park needs attention
Michael W — Google review
“This wall contains every engine from the start of mankind up to now.”- Arno Grotjahn. WHO is Arno? Arno was born in 1930 and spent his youth as a merchant seaman travelling the world. He immigrated to Australia with his wife Rita from Bremen, Germany, in the 1960s. Located behind the iconic @northgregoryhotel Arno’s Wall is a wonder of modern art and architecture. Displaying the collection of junk he culled from the town dump over the years, the wall is filled with lawnmower parts, boat propellers, vintage typewriters, plaster figures, copper pots, sewing machines, and a complete early model Holden 🤯 What was his inspiration? His inspiration for the wall came from a nine month stay in Rome working part time at the Vatican. Be sure to check this spot out when you’re in Winton! 🤙🏼🖤 @m5_adventures

Nice little art deco wall
Dennis P — Google review
It's a wall with all sorts of "stuff" stuck into it. Apparently the brain child of a local. Though I was not overly impressed with the wall, I have to say the park it is constructed in is beautiful. Had it not been raining at the time I would have liked to have spent more time there.

Winton Roadhouse Cabins & Caravan Park

RV park
Winton Roadhouse Cabins & Caravan Park offers a variety of accommodation options, including lawn tent sites, powered campsites, and self-contained cabins suitable for couples, families, and larger groups. The park features spacious grounds with a pool and shared amenities. Guests can enjoy nightly entertainment by bush poet Gregory North during peak tourist season. Caretakers Glen and Colleen provide friendly service to ensure a pleasant stay. Despite ongoing renovations, the amenities remain clean and convenient to use.
"Under the shade of a Coolabah Tree" is exactly the sort of camp-site that will greet you at this wonderful little oasis in the outback. That and the T-Rex outside the office. With 3 adults in our group, in a swag and rooftop rent, $55 per night was the charge for the site and that's the best bang for the buck in outback Queensland. This place, while small, and just on the edge of town, has the cleanest bathrooms I've seen for a demountable. Having a refreshing dip in the pool after driving through 32°C sunshine was a thrilling surprise. Colleen and Glen we're awesome hosts and arranged a 'happy hour' every afternoon at 5pm. We planned just to break the drive here , but ended up staying longer just based on the park and the friendliness of the place. Winton is well worth exploring and I recommend a week here and a thousand bucks to do it properly. Everyone must checkout the dinosaur centre and the Waltzing Matilda centre and museum of Bush Poets. The Truck Museum is right next to the park and is also excellent. This place is a must visit. Oh, and the sunsets you get to see from the park are next level.
Frank H — Google review
Quiet and shady sites, clean facilities some issues with faulty power outlets, luckily I had a long lead! The poetry night (every night) is essential. Overall one of the best parks I’ve stayed in on this trip
Ian W — Google review
A lovely caravan park. Amenities were good, although more hooks on the back of shower doors would help. Water smelt discusting, had a smell of sulphur from artesian bore. Recommend to bring bottled water. The bush poet was great and very entertaining. There are a few shops in town, although too far to walk there. Plenty to see in the area.
Jan S — Google review
We were overall happy. The staff at the caravan park were very friendly and the park offers a great atmosphere. Price was pretty good. The thing that let them down was the road house. We went there for brekky after reading the menu supplied and the attendant did not want any brekky orders. She said "no orders today unless it's easy"- We left and had breakfast elsewhere
Beth R — Google review
Such a great place to stay. Absolutely lovely caretakers/managers of the property. Thanks for your help and info and good chats. The accomodation was extremely clean and tidy. All our gear was wet from a massive storm so we turned our cabin into a clothes line. So close to the centre of town, even though it's on the outskirts of town. Easy drive to the pub or pic theatre. There is a machinery museum just next door And plenty of other things to see and do in town. We liked the town.
ALLROEDS A — Google review
Very friendly. Happy Hour and at 7.00 pm a performer put on a show in the common area. His name was Gregory North... He was fabulous... Haven't laughed like that for ages. He does a different show every night. Thanks Winton... Loved our stay
Linda T — Google review
A wonderful caravan park which is in a quiet location with excellent facilities and the poet/comedian each night just adds to the great character of the park. Floor mats in the shower an added bonus when ch is extremely rare so well done 😁
Dean B — Google review
Nice little caravan Park. Site are small but manageable. Staff went above and beyond as I had car problems and racq couldn't get there, so the lady from reception (can't remember her name, sorry) got her husband who is a diesel mechanic to come and help sort the issue out. This is the kind of outback hospitality you just don't get in the cities. This alone is why I would stay here again. The park is also kept kleen and tidy.

The Musical Fence in Winton is a unique and free musical playground located behind the Diamantina Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum. It offers various percussion opportunities and is known as the world's first permanent musical fence installation. Designed by composer and percussionist Graeme Leak, this one-of-a-kind attraction has drawn visitors from around the world who enjoy playing it. The fence features acoustic resonators that amplify sounds when struck or when affected by wind, providing a fun and interactive experience for families.
Fun and Quirky Stop! The Musical Fence in Winton was a fun little stop on our way out of town. It features a range of interactive instruments made from recycled materials, and the Winton sign nearby makes for a great photo op. A quirky and creative spot that’s worth checking out! Just a tip—go earlier in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat, as there’s not much shade.

Very interesting and a little fun. The bonus here is the steel laser cut qantas sign. Do yourself a favour and return here for sunset

Winton is a quirky town full of interesting and strange sights. This is one of them. The Muscial Fence is Australia's and the World's one and only musical fence. I wouldn't say that it is a fence per se, but a bunch of quirky farm & tin stuff made into musical instruments. I had a play of course. Located just a five minutes walk from the Roadhouse Caravan Park where we stayed and behind the truck museum, it also shared the paddock with Arvo, a replica of the first plane flown by Qantas. The actual Qantas Museum is located in neighbouring town Longreach, a couple of hours down the road.

The area is located at the rear of the Winton industrial area and provides a selection of bespoke musical instruments to play. It is also one of the best spots for a sunset viewing and photos. There are no amenities here.

The Australian Hotel in Winton, located opposite the North Gregory Hotel, is a highly appealing dining destination with its impressive menu and outdoor ambiance. Diners can enjoy a satisfying shared pepper calamari starter followed by substantial half rack of ribs or flavorful seafood risotto. The meal concludes on a delightful note with a rocky road mousse. Visitors are astonished that such quality food can be found in this remote location, especially when compared to the disappointing offerings in Longreach.
My partner Danny and I recently stopped off at The Australian Hotel for a breakfast on our way through to the outback. We met the owner and Tracey the cook who were super lovely. The food cooked by Tracey was delivered cooked to perfection, and you can really see the love delivered on the plate. We highly recommend dropping into this friendly spot for some great food and coffee if you're ever travelling through Winton anytime soon!

Ordered the pepperoni pizza which came out quickly, unfortunately made with pre-made frozen bases that are dense, ate 3 pieces but it wasn’t great. I thought I’d try something else so went for the chicken schnitzel with mushroom gravy, the chips were over cooked and did not taste very nice, the schnitzel crumb tasted stale and a bit chewy, chicken was pretty dry. Unfortunately it just wasn’t the place for me. Cool old pub though with plenty of seating and friendly staff.

5/10, pizza was ok, I Ordered "home made" rissoles, very poor portion, rissoles 0/10 mash is from a packet. $30 for horrible "home made" food!!! $10 for a cup of chips. Service was 10/10 very friendly but the food needs attention. 5 stars for service, 2 for food!

Dropped in for a Friday night dinner, pizza. Really disappointed with the waitress. She mixed our order up with another table so we waited 57 minutes only to be presented with a pizza my wife could not eat. The waitress admitted she was at fault and promised we'd receive the replacement, correct, pizza within 10 minutes. Too much like Faulty Towers! Of well, now for a glass of red while we wait. To her credit, the pizza did arrive in the 10 minutes.

I have resided in Winton for 7 months, and I can confidently assert that The Winton Hotel offers the finest cuisine in town. Their Chicken Breast adorned with Dijon Sauce, bacon, and avocados provides an explosion of flavors that is incredibly satisfying. The beer garden presents a visually pleasing atmosphere with its illuminated setting, allowing patrons to unwind after a busy day. Additionally, the bar boasts a large television screen where one can watch sports events.
Great food and a really friendly team looking after you. It's definitely worth a visit for a meal when you are in Winton.

Staff were friendly and beer prices were what we pay in Ipswich. Menu was simple and food amazing. Outback Chicken was cooked to perfection and endless salad bar was a nice surprise. A must for anyone going through Winton.

Located a bit out of town, this pub is well worth visiting for a meal. Generous portions and cold beer. Even had Coopers Pale Ale! Escape the crowds at the town pubs and give these guys a go.

Kevin and Jo were so welcoming during my stay at the Winton! Very accomodating, the rooms were warm, cozy and the communal bathrooms were neat and tidy! A 2 min walk From a wonderful coffee shop the Lost Poet and 5 mins from the main strip in town! Highly recommend!

Rembered all the photos on the wall of the Winton Devils, this used to be in the main street at the Australian Hotel, glad all the photos have been moved. The bar man was great 👍

The rooms are absolutely gorgeous. The bed is very comfortable. The rooms are tastefully decorated with black and white decor the showers are clean and hot and the water does Not smell like bore water thanks to The cooling tanks. The meals are second to none with generous portions And the freshest of produce. The staff Makes you feel Like you are family. For such a historical hotel the atmosphere and experience is something everyone should experience. I would highly recommend staying here Kev and Jo are wonderful hosts.
