Trip to Chimborazo was excellent! Or guide, Fausto, was excellent. He was very nice, spoke great English (and French) and he was unbelievable friendly. Probably the most memorable post of our trip!

Produce market
Mercado La Merced is a must-visit in Riobamba, known for its delicious pork dishes and the famous salt juice. The market also offers colorful mestizo crafts at the Red Square Market. Riobamba holds the title of 'the city of the first' due to its historical significance as the site of various pioneering achievements in Ecuador. Visitors can enjoy elegant surroundings and friendly locals while savoring tasty fritada, a slightly spicy dish priced between 2.
Ir you feel like trying out some tradicional Ecuadorian food you won’t be disappointed! Great so have some Hornado (roasted pork)
Oscar B — Google review
Pro: This is a great place to visit is a good representation of the Ecuadorian culture with the main products Fruit juice with Esther and Ice of the Chimborazo, test great, and after the delicious Hornado or Roasted pork. Cons: Be really careful when you buy the Hornado, when somebody enter in the Hornado place start a really theatrical offering of Hornado test sample if you accept one be ready to be deceived if they think you are not Local, or tourist. Because first if you ask they will be offer a really overpriced and not full product , please look around and compare the quantity there are offering you for such overpriced product, if you look a difference claim immediately for a fair Hornado amount, because some people here are not honest, Happened to me I recuest a 5 dollar product and received a half portion on comparation the another locks like local Who recuest a 2.5 dollar portion. What's happened with this, I am already living here for 2 months and will not comeback to the Merced Market, I will look for another place to eat Hornado and of course the honest people working on here will be lost credibility, and of course customers, because a lot of people like me show Merced Market as a just One visit place.
Yanko — Google review
It's a small market with lots of restaurants. The food is nice but they sell quite aggressively. Haha
Estela Z — Google review
Unfortunately, this is not the same place I knew few years ago. It's a kind of scary go to this place... The prices are very high and the dishes are not delicious anymore... So, be careful, before order, establish the real cost for the meal you are asking for....
SeventhBeatle — Google review
Terrible place. Only one type of (disgusting) roasted pork (literraly 20 sellers sell the same thing), and they cheated us on the price twice : They first announce a price, and then raise it of 50 cents when you have to pay after the meal). Don't go there
Kirian G — Google review
Very interesting experience. Pig or Hornados en espanol is the main dish but I was happy to find a juice stand among all the cooked pigs and enjoyed some celery juice with pineapples.
C. M — Google review
A place where you can eat some of the traditional plates in Riobamba call Hornados, but is a noisy place you will find the experience very interesting, but for me the best hornados are in Valle de los Chillos the restaurant is call Dieguitos.
Patricio A — Google review
The market of La Merced is a very typical place of riobamba with a personality of its own in which they make a pork know in Riobamba as "Hornado" very delicious. They also prepared natural fruit juice with ice from Chimborazo volcano. If you are lucky you can find a volcanic stone in your natural fruit juice!.

Parque 21 De Abril is a must-visit in Riobamba, especially on Saturdays when the bustling market takes over the streets. The variety of products available is impressive, from livestock to artisan crafts. Even if you can't make it on a Saturday, there are smaller markets throughout the week offering fresh produce and local goods. For stunning panoramic views of Riobamba and its surrounding volcanoes, head to the hilltop where the park is located.
Nice park, good view over Riobamba
TM — Google review
A nice spot in an otherwise pretty dismal city. Good views of El Altar volcano and the mural was one of the nicer we have seen in Ecuador. Seems to be a bit of a lovers park as eager couples were cuddled up thru out the park. Bit trashy but still quite pleasant.
Tim T — Google review
Garbage and It was dirty at some places. There are no security in the park (and in the city). A lot of shady people, small city with a strange vibe. Be careful.
ÆTelekom — Google review
The park is raised just above the surrounding city so there are great views in all directions, including towards Chimborazo. I agree it doesn't feel very safe with a camera as there are very few people around even on a Sunday morning except for an occasional loitering man. Below the park towards the church there were market stalls and more activity.
V C — Google review
Now this is the park that really need some love and maintenance. From this park you can really get some great view of Chimborazo and Volcano Tungurahua in the background of the beautiful church.

Parque Guayaquil

Park
Parque Guayaquil, also known as Parque Abril de 21, is a hilltop park in Riobamba offering stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes. It's easily accessible by bus from Quito and Guayaquil. The park features a children's playground, colorful artwork and statues, and even a water park. While it's a great place for families to spend time during sunny days, caution is advised at night or during rainy weather due to safety concerns.
My girlfriend and I visited the park on our second evening in Riobama. The park is big and was clean during our visit. There was an national election scheduled the next day so the mood was festive. There were rides for kids and boy scouts at the band stand. There is even a water park in the park. We loved the artwork and statues that were quite colorful.

Is a great and Beautiful park, Called Parke Infantil. Unfortunately after somany years, I can see how bad become due the lack of maintenance, the great Small lake, become empty, with out the Magic of its colour lights, and no place for rent boats This time was at 7 am and be surprised because this park was full of people making exercise, dancing. Nestled just north of the serene Laguna de Colta, the Primera Iglesia Católica del Ecuador, also known as María Natividad de Balbanera, holds a special place in history as the first Catholic church established in Ecuador back on August 15, 1534. This modest yet charming church features an altar crafted from large stones and is adorned with vibrant flowers surrounding a small statue of Mary.
Just north of the Laguna de Colta stands the first catholic church of Ecuador, founded by the conquistadores on august 15, 1534. The very simple church has an altar built from large stones where a sea of flowers always adorns a small Mary statue. In clear weather, the beautiful white peak of the Chimborazo can be seen from here. It is certainly worth pausing your trip here.

It's a very nice place for someone interested in Religious and historical monuments. The souvenir store has plenty of options, including some beers! We got bracelets, the design has been worked. It's the best opportunity to give a pray, you can get candles right outside, at the entrance.

(Translated by Google) Well, what I tried were the lunches. They have excellent seasoning, an affordable price, a good atmosphere, the place is large and they play ambient music at a low volume so that everyone can hear each other. I think the only thing that fails a little is the attention, I think that when they treat you kindly and with a smile the food is better enjoyed, it is the only recommendation I could make. Also, I think they should be open to having a more varied clientele, because people in wheelchairs cannot access the place. Now most places are pet friendly because pets have become part of the family, they should also take that into account. (Clearly, always taking care that pets are not going to be dangerous) (Original) Bueno, lo que yo probé fueron los almuerzos.

I have traveled extensively in South America for over 6 months, and I can confidently say that Al Tiesto Kitchen & Grills offers the most exceptional dining experience. The shrimp soup and Ecuadorian filette dusted with quinoa were incredibly delicious and generously portioned. The service was outstanding, with the chef and owner, Luigi, personally coming out to engage in conversation. Luigi's extensive training in NYC and his experiences living in various countries lend a unique flavor to his dishes.
Tasty and fresh food prepared for you from scratch. The chef is second to none, has traveled the world, and is very engaging in a conversation. If you have a chance, introduce yourself and ask how many countries he has visited! The food is prepared fresh, so expect a wait.

The chef and owner, Luigi, came out to talk with us. He was trained in NYC and has lived in many other countries, so his food has the taste of many different places. The restaurant doesn't look fancy but the food is the best!

The food did take some time before it came out but it was nothing crazy and it absolutely was worth the wait. Meat was cooked perfectly and they were good portions. Would definitely recommend!

This restaurant could be a surprise or a fiasco depends on how lucky you are. Lets begin with the facilities: a kind of castle under expansion - construction at the moment. It is big but w/ few parking lots. Food: Arrived late for lunch, hungry for a salad and something else but they didn't have any salad available. I have a very sensitive stomach to sauces and spice so I needed to ask the sauce serve apart. One of the waiters told me that the chef was a little bit stubborn and doesn't like to serve dishes w/o sauces. Asked for the first salad it my choice: order accepted. 5 minutes later waiter said it wasn't available. Same think happened w/ other choices. My sense tells me that the chef simply denied to serve us any salad because of my initial request. Finally we order : 1 sprite, 1 beer one fish croquette (very good in taste w/ a kind of Asian ginger sauce) . Total : $12.62 Service definitely could improve. ☆☆ Prices high for local standard☆☆ try hotels nearby.

Delicious food, fine quality, excellent service. Highly recommended! Enjoyed this place so much. Here again! Very delicious food! We will come back for sure!

Extremely expensive. Paella for two barely feeds one. Not enough rice limited amounts of chicken. Seafood shrimp look great but are served with the whole shell and head still on. Taste great but very little food. We would not go there again which is probably why we were the only table there at 7:30pm.

Sangay National Park is a stunning destination that showcases diverse landscapes, including tropical rainforests and glaciers, as well as two active volcanoes. The park offers tranquility and beautiful lakeside beaches for relaxation, away from the crowds. It is home to indigenous species like the mountain tapir and Andean condor. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking mountain views and serene surroundings while taking in spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
The most beautiful national park of the country. Hard route but, highly recommend! The best mountain landscape of the country. Amazing sunrises and sunsets. Be careful with your physical condition and the weather before going!

Beautiful landscape and not yet overrun by tourist. We visited the park with a local guide from Alausí and came by car to take a walk at the beautiful lakes. The view of the mountains was breathtaking and the calmness of the place was amazing. Be sure to bring lunch so you can strengthen yourself after the hike but take your trash with you :)

Beautiful but heavy walk to El Refugio. Expect lots of mud on a narrow path after heavy rain. The refugio is primitive but has a magnificient view at the area.

What a wonderful place! The park is beautiful with its lakes, the indigenous people, the animals and especially the tranquility. It is nice to relax in the "beach" directly at the lake and enjoy the view and the sun (when it's shining). It is not so crowded and very clean as well. A special place with a wonderful atmosphere! I would always visit the park again when I'm close by!

With its outstanding natural beauty and two active volcanoes, the park illustrates the entire spectrum of ecosystems, ranging from tropical rainforests to glaciers, with striking contrasts between the snowcapped peaks and the forests of the plains. Its isolation has encouraged the survival of indigenous species such as the mountain tapir and the Andean condor.

On the northeast side of the Parque Pedro Vicente Maldonado is the catedral de San Pedro de Riobamba, the main church of the diocese of the same name. This Roman Catholic church with its simply designed interior is mainly notable for its Baroque facade, decorated with many medallions. After the old cathedral was destroyed in 1797 by the most severe earthquake in Ecuadorian history (8.3 on the Richter Scale), the current church was built between 1810 and 1835. The cathedral, especially the facade, is one of the finest examples of Plateresque architecture and with a mix of indigenous and colonial elements.

Villa Bonita Hostel in Riobamba is a highly recommended place to stay. With its well-equipped kitchen and complimentary wi-fi, it offers comfort and convenience. The hostel boasts affordable rates starting from USD20 for a private room. Guests can expect exceptional hospitality from Vanessa and her family, who go above and beyond to ensure their visitors' needs are met. The cleanliness of the hostel is unparalleled, with daily deep cleaning routines.
The owners David and Vanessa are so nice and incredibly helpful for everything you want to do in Riobamba. I got a lot of tips from them about visiting El Altar and Chimborazo on my own and they can also help you organize a guided tour. The hostel itself is stunning, with beautiful decor and being super clean. The included breakfast is really good and the shower gets really hot which was fantastic after my hikes. Rooms very spacious and clean. They have some gear rental (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, rubber boots) as well, which was a big plus for El Altar! Super happy about their laundry service as well - clothes clean and folded after only 3 hours. Thanks tons for everything! Hope to be back!

The room rates are reasonable, and the value for money is impressive, especially given the cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. In summary, Villa Bonita Hostel offers a cozy and inviting environment that makes you feel right at home. It’s definitely a place worth recommending to anyone visiting Riobamba.

Really nice hostel to relax in, free breakfast although it was a bit early, decent location, hot water, nice beds, huge lockers although sometimes they don't have the key for the lock. I booked the Chimborazo climb through them which was cheaper than other agencies I've visited.
Guiping X — Google review
One of the best hostels we have stayed in on our trip through SA! The building and rooms are huge and beautiful, and everything is super clean. The owners are a really nice local family that organised a tour to Chimborazo that ended up being a highlight of our travels. They also speak English which was very helpful. Riobamba is a super safe and comfortable city with some great restaurants and a few nice breweries.
Mitchell L — Google review
We didn‘t feel welcome, the owner (women) was really arrogant. I don’t care what she will comment on this review, but that’s the way we felt. She gave us sh** because we only stayed 1 night and because we only speak very little spanish, even though she speaks perfect english. We never experienced that in Ecuador before. The breakfast is A JOKE, I don‘t know why everybody says it‘s great: bread, eggs and a banana. You could take some coffee, yoghurt and jam (the jam was in a big pot and I guess they scraped of the mold, because it tasted definitely moldy). The showers downstairs (which was the only one working properly, that‘s also what the owner told us to be fair) are see through. I know, there are other showers upstairs, but they are electric, so they are not good for washing long hair or/and wanting hot water. It was very loud in the morning because of traffic and from the other rooms as well. Their dogs jumped on us the whole time while we were eating. Didn‘t like the location of the hostel. Really overpriced for what you get. 2 stars, because it was pretty clean.
Magdalena S — Google review
Truly a wonderful hostel. Very clean, large comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, good location, good service, nice breakfast. Some little things made the experience even better, such as: free towels, free breakfast, little towels in the bathroom to dry your hands, a good bathroom to bed ratio. In general the decorations and attention payed to detail were just superior, I highly recommend this place!

As you step inside, you'll be captivated by the sight of skilled chefs tossing dough in the air and expertly baking pizzas in a traditional wood-fired oven right before your eyes. I got what I realized too late was essentially a cheese pizza. It was not good - puddle of oil on top, thick layer of cheese, crust was hard at first but became soggy. They told me it would take 30 minutes minimum to bring me the dish. My party already had their dinners half way. They did not even offer me a quick alternative. Simply didn't charge me for it. I had to walk across the street to grab a burger. The worst service I've ever received.

Nestled in the heart of Riobamba, Patrimonio is a charming restaurant that beautifully marries history with culinary delight. I feel so bad about giving this review. I have been traveling already 8 weeks in this wonderful country, and this is the first time I feel absolutely cheated. I felt personally insulted. The place looks amazing, the food not spectacular but definitely OK. when I received the bill I noticed an extra payment "varios" ! When I asked the personal as to the meaning, they had no answer and went to ask the manager, came back claiming it was for extra alcohol in my drink. when I stated that I should of been asked if I wanted any extra, no clear answer. Such a shame. Just 2$ that left me with a bad feeling ...

Dinner was good. But what I liked best was the atmosphere. The restaurant is in an old house with a Warming fire in the fireplace. First time I had been warm in Riobamba!

To be clear it is not a gourmet restaurant, it is a small family owned establishment and has those limitations so now you know. Definitely worth it if you are in a small group or alone. The atmosphere at night is amazingly cozy and welcoming. If you care about the history of the building it adds to the feeling. The proprietor is very nice and the food is good for what it is ($8-$14) Use the salsa. Really. Put it on everything. On the bread, on the meat, on your tongue, spread it on your chest, pour it into your eyes. Happiness is becoming one with the flavor.

Historic place. Absolutely gorgeous and you have a candlelight dinner. Food is very well prepared, served and very tasty. We sat next to the chimney, so was a very romantic dinner.
Jihna G — Google review
Looks lovely and the meat (when it finally arrived) was great but fries were cold. The waiter/owner was all smiles. All smiles for the 50 mi.utes we waited for drinks, 1.5 hours for the main dish (he forgot the entrada my friend had ordered) and for all of this he charged 19% servicio. Note the restaurant was busy but not too capacity. Off day perhaps.

Day 3

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like La Nariz del Diablo. Not quite as popular as Chimborazo, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 9 hours.

La Nariz del Diablo, a historic rail network in Ecuador, offers a unique and thrilling journey from the Andes to the coast, showcasing steep terrain and breathtaking scenery. The train departs from Alausi, a charming town with shops and eateries. Onboard, passengers are treated to historical commentary in Spanish and English as they traverse the mountains. While some found it challenging to hear the guide's narration due to seating arrangements, others were captivated by the lush vegetation during April and May.
Hike it! You can hike it easily from Alausi by using the Mapsme app and following the trail. Bring water and sun protection plus they will probably have an entry fee next time as the booth is setup but unmanned as of September 2020. Awesome views as you follow the tracks from above. Enjoy!
Tim T — Google review
The train leaves out of Alausi, and it's fairly quiet, easy to walk around, shops and places to eat. Beautiful. The train itself was comfortable, with generally enough room, but not any to spare. The guide gave all historical information first in Spanish then again in English as we traveled through the mountains. I wasn't always able to hear her and she kind of hurried through it in rote fashion. No interest or enthusiasm. Depending on which side of the train you are on you may not be able to see. You are allowed to stand, but everyone was trying to get the same vantage point for their photographs, and that was frustrating and disappointing sometimes. There were two stops so people could get off and take pictures. The last stop had cultural dancing and hand crafted items for purchase as well as a restaurant/cafe which was pleasant. Overall I enjoyed it.
Bernadette B — Google review
Excellent for children of all ages! Make sure to get a conductor hat at the nearby market. The stop is a lovey cultural experience. Make sure to take it all in. You will want to be on the right side of the train as you head out of town to get the best views and get the best photos. Make sure to open the windows to avoid reflections in you photos and shoot at a fast shutter speed. Sit in the front or back corner of the cars for the best vantage points. Best time to go is the first excursion. Bring water, sunscreen, camera, and hat. If you arrive the night before get some great photos with the train without many, if any other, people in the photos.
Bejat M — Google review
It's a great train trip with great location and views, you will see one of a kind train trip at the mountain edge , with two stops that the first contain a viewpoint for photos and the second is a station with traditional dancers and a restuarant that offers snacks, drinks, breakfast or lunch as the time is . with some old types of houses and workshops like a museum or something like that. and the hole trip will takes 2 hours and, 30 minutes, 30 minutes to the viewpoint and there 15 minutes then an houre at the station and a few 30 minutes to go back to the station in Alausi
Ahmed T — Google review
Very beautiful mountain view and very comfortable train ride. The tour guide spoke perfect English. We took the morning train, from 8:00 to 10:30, and visited a museum at the final station, was very interesting. Also if you want, there are some nice shops around the train station, cheap price and very good stuff.
Tian M — Google review
Beutiful scenery, knowledgeable tour guides. Take a hoody or something worm if going early in the morning. But once sun comes out... you wish you had a tank top!. Website to buy train tickets needs a lot of work. But if you are on time at the front desk of the train station, they'll set you up fairly quick.

In 1899 the construction of a train connection between Guayaquil and Quito started. The construction of the first trajectory is progressing well until the builders encounter a literally and figuratively large problem: the almost vertical rock face of the Nariz del Diablo (the "Devil's Nose"). By constructing a zigzag track, the railway builders are able to overcome 490 meters of altitude at only a short distance. In 1997, stormy weather destroyed large parts of the railway line and its recovery progressed very slowly. The winding route between the stations of Alausi and Sibambe now serves as a tourist attraction. The slow pace, especially on the zigzag route and the magnificent view, make this fantastic ride so attractive. A must see destination!
Koen — Google review
Absolutely a MUST SEE in Ecuador! This was easily my favorite experience of visiting Ecuador. Go in April or May to see the vegetation at its best. I went with a tour group and we stopped at the Alausi train station to see Nariz del Diablo. In the middle of the ride we stopped at a small building with a cafe and small shop. There were also people dancing in a part of the little building and we ended up joining them. I attached photos and videos of the area. Breathtaking!

Nestled in the heart of Riobamba, the Basílica del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús stands as a stunning testament to religious devotion and architectural beauty. This unique basilica, characterized by its striking pink dome and Neoclassical design, was conceived after the Republic's consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The vision came to life through the efforts of Father Manuel Jose Proano and local residents who transported stones from nearby rivers for its construction.

For about 23 US a pie , the taste was not good and the food poisoning is not worth it. My aunt who lives in Ecuador got sick too from the pizza. If I would’ve known this, I wouldn’t have eaten any. Catholic church
San Alfonso Church, also known as the Temple of San Alfonso, is a stunning Catholic church located in Riobamba. The construction of this beautiful building began in 1872 and was completed in 1880 with contributions from the local community. The church is situated on Argentinos and 5 de Junio streets, next to the San Alfonso market.
(Translated by Google) TEMPLE OF SAN ALFONSO The Missionary fathers of the Most Holy Redeemer established themselves in Riobamba on July 15, 1870, in the convent and church of San Agustín. On May 4, 1871, the church collapsed and a small chapel was built for worship. In 1872, the construction of the Temple of San Alfonso began with the contribution of the Riobambeños in economic resources and carrying all types of materials. The work took 8 years under the rectorate of the priests Pedro Didier, Pedro López and Antonio Yenger. The architects were the Redemptorist brothers Vicente Lindner and Teófilo Richert. In 1880 the work was completed; The inauguration celebrations are solemn. The official consecration took place on April 17, 1881 and was presided over by the Apostolic Delegate Dr. Mario Mocenni. In 1905 the Redemptorites were violently expelled from the country; and through the management of a commission of Riobamba ladies, the gradual return of all of them is achieved so that they can continue with their pastoral and missionary mission. The church shows the neo-Gothic and Romanesque style of the time; It has walls, interior arches, rose windows and an iron roof; On the main façade there are two tall, conical, wooden towers. Inside, a beautiful altar covered with gold leaf stands out; paintings and images of great artistic value, the image of the Virgin of Perpetual Help and the statue of San Alfonso de Ligorio. Address: Calles Argentinos and 5 de Junio.

La Vienesa Delicatessen is a traditional spot in Riobamba known for serving the best hornado in Ecuador, accompanied by refreshing natural fruit juices cooled with ice from the nearby Chimborazo volcano. They also offer delicious crispy empanadas de morocho. The place is cash-only and offers a good menu featuring breakfast, sandwiches, and excellent coffee. Visitors can find an array of cheese, hams, and other products at this iconic establishment.
Lots of cheese, hams and other products. If you are from outside the "palanqueta" (bread) is their best. Breakfast are awesome too.

This place is cash only. I tried to use a debit credit card, and they don't take them they have a good menu. we ordered breakfast and sandwiches they were really good. I ordered a cappuccino, and it was a little bit bitter. I'm not sure if the coffee was good quality. our cashier was really slow and wasn't paying attention to our order. we had to repeat it twice other than that. If you're in the area, I recommend the sandwiches.

Honestly, I don't recommend it. Cafetería PONCHES & CREPES is a delightful culinary haven in Riobamba that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Visitors rave about the freshness and generous portions of their offerings, which include a variety of delicious crepes and savory empanadas. The ponche de canela stands out as a must-try, alongside sweet options like Nutella-stuffed crepes adorned with strawberries.
This was by far the best food we had in Riobamba! Absolutely everything was DELICIOUS and fresh, and the portions were quite generous. We had the ponche de canela, pizza + chicken empanadas, pizza crepe, chicken crepe, and a crepe with bananas, strawberries, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup. We loved every single thing we tried -- we were only disappointed we didn't have more time to try everything on their menu! The food was fantastic, but the service and kindness by the owners and staff was wonderful. Everyone was incredibly kind, friendly, and helpful, and it made us want to hang out there. They even gave us recommendations of other places to visit. We just loved them! This place is absolutely worth a visit if you're in Riobamba. Highly, highly recommended! The pics don't do the food justice. Also, they are great about mask-wearing and cleanliness, which made us comfortable.

Wow! This adorable little place is a true gem! My husband and I read some good comments about it and decided to check it out, and we're so glad we did. We got an empanada de carne, strawberry/Nutella crepes, and our first ever ponches. Everything was absolutely delicious! The empanada was flaky, soft, and crispy. The meat was super savory and flavored flawlessly. The crepes were fantastic. And the ponches—hard to put my finger on it, but they tasted like some kind of nostalgic bit of childhood, like a marriage between snickerdoodles and pancakes but in a drink form, like a warm and comforting hug! If a drink could be described as fluffy, this one would be. Amazing! On top of the outstanding food, the place was an endearing little nook with nice, calm music and the kindest owner, Alfonso. You could tell he really cares about giving his customers the best experience. 10/10 highly recommended!
