The National Museum and the Château de Pau is a captivating 14th-century castle museum that also serves as the birthplace of King Henry IV. The site boasts opulent interiors adorned with tapestries and artworks, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich history. Situated in Pau, France, this medieval fortress turned Renaissance castle provides breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
Impression palace in Pau where Henry IV was born. Sits on a hill over looking the city. The tour is only in French but they have cards in English in each room. The history was fascinating and the original furniture and other items were wonderful to see
Winter B — Google review
Is a beautiful small castle with a lot of story. It can only be visit with a guide so be aware of this before going. The place is pretty to spend an hour in there. The outside of the castle has a garden and áreas to walk and visit too.
Vero C — Google review
It's cool, and quick to see, but a big part of the castle is not accessible.
Francisco F — Google review
Beautiful house to look round, a sign in English in every room, the guide that takes you round is all in French but was still excellent! And good value at 7 euros per person
Tryphena P — Google review
It's a great chateau! We would have enjoyed it more if there were a guided tour in English. We could not visit the chateau without a private tour, and they were all in French. I speak Portuguese and Spanish, but that didn't help at all while trying to understand the guide! I want to learn French so I don't miss anything like this again!!! The staff was great and I highly recommend the visit!
Carla O — Google review
Nice for a guided tour. Refurbished in the 19th century. Birthplace of Henry the 4th.
Silvio K — Google review
The castle exterior is fabulous. Unfortunately, we were unable to tour the inside as we did not know that the first Sunday of the month is free entry and they had reached their maximum at 4:00 pm. No doubt it would have been a great visit.
Feisty G — Google review
Renewed castle nicely equipped with newer and older furniture, tapestries, curtains. Nice to see. Admission is 10 eur and only in guided groups (app. 10-25 people) but all guidance is in French. There are plaques with basic inscriptions in French. English and Spanish.

Fresh food market
Produce market
Halles de Pau is a vibrant and diverse food market located in Pau. The ground floor features a fresh market offering a wide variety of local produce directly from the producers. Upstairs, there is a food court with an impressive selection of high-end businesses serving Asian, Italian, and Bearnese cuisine, as well as delicatessen counters. The space is well-organized to ensure compliance with Covid-19 safety measures.
A gem in Pau, this market offers a fantastic selection of local and high-quality products. From fresh produce to artisanal goods, the variety is impressive and reflects the region’s rich culinary traditions. The vendors are friendly and knowledgeable, making the shopping experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors!
Olivier B — Google review
Les Halles de Pau is a large 2-storey building that houses markets, both permanent and daily. Half of the lower floor is a farmers- market with fresh foods from the farms. The lower floor of the other half also has fresh foods but includes lots of lamb(especially now at Easter), fish, beef, pork, duck, cheese, wine and sweet treats like chocolate and macarons. Upstairs, above this section, are eateries, including tapas, and an oyster bar, among others. Today, I had tapas and tried my best french. The servers where you order and pick up, were super nice. The one woman who didn't speak English grabbed her colleague who did. Oh, and the food was très bien! The poulet mariner (marinated chicken) and potatas bravas were delicious! And as the name says, tapas, dishes to share. The amounts were very plentiful!
Rae G — Google review
Some of the most delicious food I’ve ever tasted. The tapas are to die for! The macarons, ice cream, and baked goods are all superb. The selection is tremendous! I’ll have to go back for a longer stay to sample more next time!
Kristin O — Google review
A really nice permanent indoors market with fresh, local produce sold directly from the farmers. Organic vendors, fresh flowers, cheeses, honey, cured and fresh meats, wines, baked goods… Lovely restaurants upstairs serving good quality food at very reasonable prices. Overall a nice cultural experience.
Amber S — Google review
Outstanding selection and options. A beautiful very modern Food Hall on the lower floor and an outstanding Food Court on the upper floor. HIGHLY recommend to visit!!
Brent M — Google review
Nice, neat and clean fresh product market. Has restaurants on the top floor. All a little pricy.
Quintie B — Google review
A wonderful selection of fresh and prepared foods. Great place to have a grazing lunch!!!
Brian H — Google review
Really nice market, a lot of cheese and local produce. Beware that all the food places close at 14:00, even though the market itself closes at 15:00.

I originally posted a negative review because I visited a not-so-great location of GL. I saw the response of the owner which informed me about a fire that has been taken place. It's only fair to wait and see how they will come back, so I pause my opinion and wish them lots of good luck to rebuild the original store again.

Museums
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau is a small yet impressive museum that offers free admission to its visitors. The museum boasts a collection of paintings and sculptures dating back to the 15th century, featuring renowned artists such as El Greco, Jacob Jordaens, Zurbaran, Breughel the Elder, and Peter Paul Rubens. Louis la Caze's generous donation in the 1800s significantly contributed to the museum's remarkable assembly of works.
One of the best museums I’ve ever visited in my life and I’ve visited a few in big cities. It was so well organised and so packed with gems ! The booklet in English they prepared was fantastic and it was a good guide to walk you through the museum. I spent 3 hours there and I would’ve spent more! The team was friendly and hospitable and the best thing, museum is free. Incredible! They could charge 10 euros and I’d still pay to go in. Bravo to the city for making this available to the public for free and bravo to the team for keeping the place so well organised! Very impressed and I’ll definitely go back again.
Matthew K — Google review
Pretty good collection, with some big names like Rubens, Bruegel, Degas, El Greco and a few more. It's a small museum, 1h/1h30 is enough to see it - in that sense it's enjoyable. Also the entry is free and the staff are nice
Francisco F — Google review
It was a hot afternoon in Pau and I came in not quite sure what to expect. What a treat! Free for starters. Quiet (such a contrast to the galleries in London). Amazing permanent exhibition and - a total treat - seeing the work of one of the masters of photography, Robert Doisneau (a special exhibition). Very friendly staff who did all they could to deal with my schoolboy French. A very good (small) guide in English to illuminate some of their major works.
David C — Google review
This is an excellent well curated art museum with works from the 1600s through the twentieth century.
John A — Google review
I cant believe that this caliber museum has free admission. Small diverse collection with some very incredible gems.
Raven A — Google review
It fantastic that the small towns has got galleries ✌️✌️ I totally enjoyed it and ladies were kind … the only downside was that 2 of us - we both got lost - the building is a bit confusing if you’re there first time so I was trying to follow the green arrows but they just took me around - please, mark the exits ;-)) The colour glass was great✌️✌️
Natália — Google review
The entrance is free. Small but interesting. There are couple of grande masters paintings, Rubens and Degas, but the rest are not so well known. Like some, I would say impressionist, there.

Scenic Railroads
The Funicular in Pau is a historic railway that has been operating for over a century, connecting the lower and upper parts of the town. It runs from the train station to Boulevard des Pyrenees, offering stunning panoramic views of the mountains along the way. This free service has been available to visitors since 1978 and is popular among locals as well. The short 3-minute ride is perfect for children and offers a unique way to travel between the city center and the train station.
It was a fun activity to do since we were so close to centre. It reminded me of a train that operated using water and pulled the trains in opposite directions. Here as one went up the other went down. They have a little history in it at the bottom near the big train station in Pau. We just rode it because it was there, looked cute /antique and free!!
Ilynn M — Google review
What a fun way to get from Pau train station to the upper part of the city. It takes you directly to the Chateau de Pau and wonderful restaurants and shops. And there is no charge?
Susan T — Google review
This is a wonderful old for Nicola train. It doesn’t go particularly far, but it is free to ride on and runs every five minutes or so. It takes you from the lower area of the city near the train station up to the upper part of the town a fun thing to do
G M — Google review
Free transport between the city centre and the train station in Pau... But not the usual way. The Funicular is a historic piece of art and worth a ride, even if you don't need to go to the station! The cabins quickly fill with people and the two trains set off, meet in the middle and touch down at the opposite end. The view from up here to the mountains is spectacular too!
Pascal B — Google review
Awesome. It is worth the wait and money.
R A — Google review
Not much to see at the bottom, but why miss a free ride on something that is part of history and free? Not much of that around! It leaves every 5 or so minutes and the trip is not more than than 3 or 4.
Quintie B — Google review
I'm from Brazil 🇧🇷 I loved the experience! It's free to go up and down, you just need to be aware of the schedules.
Luiza V — Google review

I tried to enter the Casino de Pau tonight at 10pm to play poker. Although this is not written anywhere on their website that you cannot enter without, I have been asked an ID, which I presented and got told that this is not a valid ID. I have been playing poker in many casinos around the globe and this is the first time ever that I got asked an ID to enter a casino and second that my Federal and valid driving licence is not an acceptable ID. The staff was absolutely not helpful, unapologetic and they were rude. This behavior is unacceptable and is certainly giving the impression of an amateur and sloppy business !

Absolute aanrader als je in de buurt bent en 4 uur kan uittrekken om de 18 holes te spelen!

The dining experience at Les Pipelettes was truly exceptional. The five-course meal was a delightful and eye-opening journey, showcasing the creativity and elegance of the culinary team. The use of edible flowers and unique combinations of textures added an intriguing twist to each dish. Notably, the incorporation of seaweed in both the opening and closing courses brought a refreshing flavor profile. Both fish courses were delectable, while the lamb course stood out as one of the best ever had.
Excellent food, friendly owner, you can feel that the food is prepared with love for details. We were told where ingredients comes from. The dishes looked amazing and were delicious.

This place was wonderful, and very accommodating to people who speak very little French. We would recommend to anyone looking for creative and delicious foods highlighting fresh local ingredients.

The meal was excellent- five courses, each a delight and discovery. Beautiful and elegant. Creative use of edible flowers, intriguing combinations of textures. I loved the use of seaweed in the first and last course. The two fish courses were delicious, and the lamb course was some of the best I have ever had. The dessert course was incredible- strawberries were amazing, exquisite, in both the sorbet and the little tart. Portions are appropriate for the number of courses. Good wine selection, with at least one half bottle offered. I would go back in a heartbeat.

This delightful pastry shop offers unparalleled croissants that are regarded as the best encountered thus far, accompanied by friendly service from the amiable owner.
I tried this bakery in Les Halles first and found the baguette to be one of the best I have ever had in my life. I went back to this location every day the next week to try the pastries and have the baguette again, and it was all insanely delicious. I will never forget it! 😋 The prices are also very reasonable.

We were in Pau for three days. And every single day I ended up getting something here and every single day they served delicious pastry and deserts. AND they work on Sundays too! from the early morning! There was a 7people line before us and every customer was asking tons of questions, but girls managed everything just smooth and quick.so in 5 minutes I was sniffing from the bag in my hands the most pleasant morning smell-smell of freshly baked croissants. Thank goodness this place exists!

Musée Bernadotte, situated in the heart of Pau, France, is a captivating museum dedicated to the life and legacy of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. From his humble beginnings as the son of a prosecutor in Pau to his remarkable journey to becoming King of Sweden and Norway, the museum offers an intriguing insight into his life. Visitors can explore the story of how Bernadotte rose through military ranks during a time of great upheaval and eventually ascended to the Swedish throne.

I went to this unique museum on a Saturday morning and had the entire place to myself. Yes, the displays are old-fashioned and dusty, but this adds to the quirky charm, and the museum deserves to have a lot more visitors, not least because of the extremely enthusiastic curator who is more than happy to share his encyclopedic knowledge of Swedish royalty and Napoleonic battles with you (if you speak French). It is testament to the story of one extraordinary man, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who came from fairly humble origins in Pau and went on to be one of Napoleon's most successful generals and was invited to become King of Sweden - and also of his descendants, the House of Bernadotte - artists, poets, musicians, reformers, some of whom went on to become crowned heads of various European courts in their own right. The top floor is pretty much laid out like a typical home of the period, with lovely examples of furniture from the Béarn. On the ground floor there is a collection of Swedish art from the early 20th century, including by two women artists who were pupils of Matisse. The museum closes over lunch from 12 - 2pm, and is incredibly good value - just 3 Euro admission.
