The National Museum and the Château de Pau is a captivating 14th-century castle museum that also serves as the birthplace of King Henry IV. The site boasts opulent interiors adorned with tapestries and artworks, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich history. Situated in Pau, France, this medieval fortress turned Renaissance castle provides breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
Impression palace in Pau where Henry IV was born. Sits on a hill over looking the city. The tour is only in French but they have cards in English in each room. The history was fascinating and the original furniture and other items were wonderful to see

Is a beautiful small castle with a lot of story. It can only be visit with a guide so be aware of this before going. The place is pretty to spend an hour in there. The outside of the castle has a garden and áreas to walk and visit too.
Vero C — Google review
It's cool, and quick to see, but a big part of the castle is not accessible.
Francisco F — Google review
Beautiful house to look round, a sign in English in every room, the guide that takes you round is all in French but was still excellent! And good value at 7 euros per person
Tryphena P — Google review
It's a great chateau! We would have enjoyed it more if there were a guided tour in English. We could not visit the chateau without a private tour, and they were all in French. I speak Portuguese and Spanish, but that didn't help at all while trying to understand the guide! I want to learn French so I don't miss anything like this again!!! The staff was great and I highly recommend the visit!
Carla O — Google review
Nice for a guided tour. Refurbished in the 19th century. Birthplace of Henry the 4th.
Silvio K — Google review
The castle exterior is fabulous. Unfortunately, we were unable to tour the inside as we did not know that the first Sunday of the month is free entry and they had reached their maximum at 4:00 pm. No doubt it would have been a great visit.
Feisty G — Google review
Renewed castle nicely equipped with newer and older furniture, tapestries, curtains. Nice to see. Admission is 10 eur and only in guided groups (app. 10-25 people) but all guidance is in French. There are plaques with basic inscriptions in French. English and Spanish.

Musée Bernadotte, situated in the heart of Pau, France, is a captivating museum dedicated to the life and legacy of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. From his humble beginnings as the son of a prosecutor in Pau to his remarkable journey to becoming King of Sweden and Norway, the museum offers an intriguing insight into his life. Visitors can explore the story of how Bernadotte rose through military ranks during a time of great upheaval and eventually ascended to the Swedish throne.
(Translated by Google) Unfortunately only seen from the outside but it was impressive to find where the Swedish royal family came (Original) Hélas vu uniquement de l'extérieur mais il était impressionnant de se trouver où est venue la famille royale de Suède
Nicolas P — Google review
I went to this unique museum on a Saturday morning and had the entire place to myself. Yes, the displays are old-fashioned and dusty, but this adds to the quirky charm, and the museum deserves to have a lot more visitors, not least because of the extremely enthusiastic curator who is more than happy to share his encyclopedic knowledge of Swedish royalty and Napoleonic battles with you (if you speak French). It is testament to the story of one extraordinary man, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who came from fairly humble origins in Pau and went on to be one of Napoleon's most successful generals and was invited to become King of Sweden - and also of his descendants, the House of Bernadotte - artists, poets, musicians, reformers, some of whom went on to become crowned heads of various European courts in their own right. The top floor is pretty much laid out like a typical home of the period, with lovely examples of furniture from the Béarn. On the ground floor there is a collection of Swedish art from the early 20th century, including by two women artists who were pupils of Matisse. The museum closes over lunch from 12 - 2pm, and is incredibly good value - just 3 Euro admission.

Museums
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau is a small yet impressive museum that offers free admission to its visitors. The museum boasts a collection of paintings and sculptures dating back to the 15th century, featuring renowned artists such as El Greco, Jacob Jordaens, Zurbaran, Breughel the Elder, and Peter Paul Rubens. Louis la Caze's generous donation in the 1800s significantly contributed to the museum's remarkable assembly of works.
One of the best museums I’ve ever visited in my life and I’ve visited a few in big cities. It was so well organised and so packed with gems ! The booklet in English they prepared was fantastic and it was a good guide to walk you through the museum. I spent 3 hours there and I would’ve spent more! The team was friendly and hospitable and the best thing, museum is free. Incredible! They could charge 10 euros and I’d still pay to go in. Bravo to the city for making this available to the public for free and bravo to the team for keeping the place so well organised! Very impressed and I’ll definitely go back again.
Matthew K — Google review
Pretty good collection, with some big names like Rubens, Bruegel, Degas, El Greco and a few more. It's a small museum, 1h/1h30 is enough to see it - in that sense it's enjoyable. Also the entry is free and the staff are nice
Francisco F — Google review
It was a hot afternoon in Pau and I came in not quite sure what to expect. What a treat! Free for starters. Quiet (such a contrast to the galleries in London). Amazing permanent exhibition and - a total treat - seeing the work of one of the masters of photography, Robert Doisneau (a special exhibition). Very friendly staff who did all they could to deal with my schoolboy French. A very good (small) guide in English to illuminate some of their major works.
David C — Google review
This is an excellent well curated art museum with works from the 1600s through the twentieth century.
John A — Google review
I cant believe that this caliber museum has free admission. Small diverse collection with some very incredible gems.
Raven A — Google review
It fantastic that the small towns has got galleries ✌️✌️ I totally enjoyed it and ladies were kind … the only downside was that 2 of us - we both got lost - the building is a bit confusing if you’re there first time so I was trying to follow the green arrows but they just took me around - please, mark the exits ;-)) The colour glass was great✌️✌️
Natália — Google review
The entrance is free. Small but interesting. There are couple of grande masters paintings, Rubens and Degas, but the rest are not so well known. Like some, I would say impressionist, there.
Ilya S — Google review
What a cute little museum! With first class art: El Greco, Degas, and many others. Tour de France exhibition at the moment with bicycles from early 20th century. Very helpful and friendly staff! A must if you are in Pau.

Located behind the Cueillette de l'Aragnon in Pau, La Foret des Vert'tiges is an adventure park offering over 100 tree games including the giant Tarzan jump. It's a great place for families to enjoy climbing trees and zip lining, especially on hot summer days when the shade from the beautiful forest provides relief. The park is perfect for kids aged 6-16 as well as adults, with creative routes suitable for all levels of ability.
Good atmosphere, friendly staff, appropriate difficulty level, attractive facilities are organized and cost-effective, highly recommended!

It was a very great experience Specially for our little one 3 years old who is usually afraid of everything 🤭 this time he was super adventurous and intrepid and he had a very beautiful experience he didn’t wanted to leave even with the rain coming. I think is a nice way to introduce kids to the nature and giving them the opportunity to become more confident. We highly recommended this place. We will come back definitely 💯

The story is interesting and well built, it has been a very nice experience. (Translated by Google) Great! However, upon arrival I had some doubts as a single adult with 3 8-year-old girls. The instructor was exceptional, I really appreciated her teaching skills and her patience with the many (sometimes surprising) questions from my little dolls. We had a great time, the girls were really into it, a real moment of play 🤩 Another adult would have helped during the game, 2 adults and 2 children is ideal 🤩 (Original) Super ! The Funicular in Pau is a historic railway that has been operating for over a century, connecting the lower and upper parts of the town. It runs from the train station to Boulevard des Pyrenees, offering stunning panoramic views of the mountains along the way. This free service has been available to visitors since 1978 and is popular among locals as well. The short 3-minute ride is perfect for children and offers a unique way to travel between the city center and the train station.
It was a fun activity to do since we were so close to centre. It reminded me of a train that operated using water and pulled the trains in opposite directions. Here as one went up the other went down. They have a little history in it at the bottom near the big train station in Pau. We just rode it because it was there, looked cute /antique and free!!
Ilynn M — Google review
What a fun way to get from Pau train station to the upper part of the city. It takes you directly to the Chateau de Pau and wonderful restaurants and shops. And there is no charge?
Susan T — Google review
This is a wonderful old for Nicola train. It doesn’t go particularly far, but it is free to ride on and runs every five minutes or so. It takes you from the lower area of the city near the train station up to the upper part of the town a fun thing to do
G M — Google review
Free transport between the city centre and the train station in Pau... But not the usual way. The Funicular is a historic piece of art and worth a ride, even if you don't need to go to the station! The cabins quickly fill with people and the two trains set off, meet in the middle and touch down at the opposite end. The view from up here to the mountains is spectacular too!
Pascal B — Google review
Awesome. It is worth the wait and money.

Not much to see at the bottom, but why miss a free ride on something that is part of history and free? Not much of that around! It leaves every 5 or so minutes and the trip is not more than than 3 or 4.

While the atmosphere may resemble that of a football stadium, it is nonetheless an impressive experience. One noteworthy event held at Zenith Pau was jazz in school which was met with great praise.

The Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation offers a fascinating and educational experience for visitors interested in the history of the Second World War. The museum features a wide array of artifacts, including photos, weapons, and other items from this significant period. Visitors can benefit from guided tours by passionate volunteers who are dedicated to preserving the memory of those who sacrificed their lives during the war.
A fantastic museum that is led by extremely passionate volunteers! Incredibly interesting and well kept, and there was someone there who could do a tour in English, but the documents and signs are all in French with some German. All of the exhibits and displays are top notch!
Arielle S — Google review
The museum has a rich collection of rare objects related to the Second War period (from bikes from fugitives, to uniforms and guns). The highlight of the museum is the guided visit, which is conducted by passionate volunteer guides, prepare to answer any questions and happy to share their precious knowledge. The museum and the guided visit are free, but I recommend giving a generous tip to keep the museum activities alive. A point to be improved: the opening of the museum is restricted compared to other museums (example: it's not open on Sunday). However, the restrictive times are understandable, as the museum is mainly ran by volunteers.

I tried to enter the Casino de Pau tonight at 10pm to play poker. Although this is not written anywhere on their website that you cannot enter without, I have been asked an ID, which I presented and got told that this is not a valid ID. I have been playing poker in many casinos around the globe and this is the first time ever that I got asked an ID to enter a casino and second that my Federal and valid driving licence is not an acceptable ID. The staff was absolutely not helpful, unapologetic and they were rude. This behavior is unacceptable and is certainly giving the impression of an amateur and sloppy business !

Lots of fun to be had by all, different play zones adapted to different ages. Comfortable seating areas on the observation balconies. Staff were young and friendly. One star less due to the expensive prices and short time span to play, €16 for my daughter to have access to the main trampoline area and €2 extra to have access to the little children’s play area where my son was ( which cost €10) for 1 1/2 hours. All in all we had a fun but rather expensive outing.

For the price it's not that great if you are looking for a big screen. There is one theatre hall with a large screen, the rest are tiny for what you would expect a movie theatre to have. It's not that well kept and you feel like you are in someone's basement watching movies.

(Translated by Google) Disappointing experience in the witches' room. Very few puzzles in the end, quite simplistic, a room with a small extra room, we quickly got around. Compared to other escapes, it's very insufficient and not very fun. It's a shame. Edited following the person's very aggressive response: I don't like being mean, but this is even more disappointing. Go out a little, go and test other rooms, you will see that yours is clearly not great with its 4-5 puzzles chasing each other. In 1 hour it's very thin. And I didn't mention Hannibal, you're off topic. Too bad, I didn't want to give too bad a rating, but you create it for yourself.

With Caroline as your guide, you can expect to gain cultural insights, historical information, and a delightful sense of humor during your visit to Pau.
We had a fantastic day with Caroline. We were looking to find out more about our French ancestors and were interested in their lives in the early 1900s. Caroline absolutely delivered; she was extremely prepared for our specific interests, and was able to give us well researched answers to many of the questions we had about their lives. She used her networking to get us onto the grounds of a private residence where one of our ancestors was a gardener. I was very impressed with her knowledge and her passion. I would definitely use her again.

My wife and I contacted Caroline Barrow about being our personal guide in the Pau area. We asked her to research where my great-grandfather lived before coming to the US. On the morning of our tour, Caroline arrived at our hotel. We discussed our plans for the day and headed to my great grandfather’s town of Lembeye, near Pau. On our way through the neighborhoods of Pau, Caroline told us about the historic sights along the way. Out of the city and into the countryside, Caroline explained to us about the Bastides which was the type of the town of Lembeye. Caroline took us to the town hall and found the clerk’s office where she introduced us and explained what we were looking for. The gentleman in charge asked for my great-grandfather’s birthday, pulled out an old book, turned a few pages and there was a half page record of my great grandfather’s birth. We thanked him and Caroline suggested there was the cemetery a few blocks away so there we went. We walked around the cemetery and found a few large new graves with my family’s name on them but we kept looking. In the middle we found a small grave with an old headstone with my family name on it next to another old grave with my great-grandfather’s in-laws’ name on it. Thank you Caroline. That will be my story until I die. We then went to eat in a nearby town called Arzacq-Arraziguet. We ate at the Café Des Sports filled with local people where Caroline arranged for our table in the middle. We had at least a five course meal high-lighted by the chef’s award winning cabbage soup seasoned with a ham hock among other things. Everything was wonderful but I could have eaten the soup alone all day. We then walked around town and visited places and paths the pilgrims use which Caroline told us all about. We then headed back to Pau where Caroline took us on a private tour of the Palais Sorrento where we learned its history and of the owner’s courageous sister in law who along with her children and staff hid allied fliers and sent them on their way back to England. Did I mention that Caroline is fluent in both French and English and I don’t know what other languages. She is sweet, professional and knowledgeable and will show you the best time you can have. I recommend her anytime you are in the area. Bertrand and Gwyn Cassou

I met some very nice people with whom we chatted over a wonderful cake that our host had made himself. Caroline is full of anecdotes, you can tell she's passionate. (Translated by Google) I tested the tempting "Story Tea Time" concept with Caroline: an intriguing theme in a setting that is as charming as it is unique, all filled with knowledge collected by the Guide...without forgetting the tea and sweets of choice from our local merchants! Result: I went back a few days later, to another site (La Tisnère), and it was even more fantastic! In short, a warm atmosphere and anecdotes to remember. I recommend it to all gourmets: the quality/price ratio is excellent...but at the risk of wanting to go back!

Vincent picked us up from Pau, and took us hiking in the Pyrenees. He arrived on time and offered us some food. We walked to the "pic d'Escutets" from the saddle. It was a terrific walk, and Vincent is very knowledgeable about this area. On the trip home he offered to stop by to try cheese or wine, we chose the cheese. This day is a highlight of our trip to France.

(Translated by Google) It was during a short stay in Pau in mid-November to meet our student daughter that we met Vincent by chance. The recommendation for La Belle escapade came from the Tourist office when we were looking for an idea for a day hike to discover the Pyrenees. The weather looked very gloomy for this long weekend and without a car our scope of action was limited. In 24 hours, Vincent freed up a slot, came to pick up my daughter's accommodation with his van and took us on an extraordinary getaway for the day. After an hour and 15 minutes by car, we leave the rain for the Esoagno sun: breathtaking landscapes, a pace suitable for everyone, new equipment (bats, hiking shoes, hats for forgetful Parisians), fresh croissants, mountain cheese , hot tea to complete our picnic, without forgetting Vincent's kindness and availability for everyone. I highly recommend Vincent: any level, any age, adapts to your desires, your budget, knows the entire Pyrenees region well (French and Spanish side, among others). The icing on the cake: Vincent organizes itinerant stays, with bivouacs integrating walking, cycling, kayaking... all while mastering the logistics and transport of your belongings from start to finish. Ideal for eco-friendly holidays (far from smartphones and tablets) with family or friends. Well done. Gaelle / Paris (travel consultant). Bravo. Gaelle / Paris (consultant en voyages).
