The Khajuraho Temple complex is a group of sandstone temples dating back to 950 AD, adorned with intricate carvings. The temples are not enclosed by a wall and are built on a platform, providing an open walkway around them. They are oriented east to west and consist of an entrance porch, hall, vestibule, and sanctum. These ancient structures showcase the excellent architecture of ancient India and have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
"An Architectural and Cultural Gem" Khajuraho Temple is truly a masterpiece of ancient Indian architecture and artistry. The intricate carvings and sculptures are breathtaking, telling stories of life, spirituality, love, and devotion in the most detailed and graceful way. The craftsmanship is so fine that even after centuries, the details remain sharp and mesmerizing. The temple complex is well-maintained, clean, and surrounded by peaceful greenery, making the visit serene and enriching. The light and sound show in the evening beautifully narrates the temple’s history, adding to the experience. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates history, culture, and timeless beauty. The Best time to visit is during winters and monsoon. Avoid in summers.

In here there are around My visit to the Khajuraho Temples was one of the most memorable travel experiences I’ve had in India. The moment I entered the complex, I was struck by the beauty and calmness of the place. The temples are not just historical monuments, but living art carved in stone. Walking around, I couldn’t stop admiring the intricate sculptures—some showing daily life, some spiritual themes, and of course the famous erotic carvings that Khajuraho is known for. They are so tastefully done that it feels more like a celebration of life and human emotions rather than something shocking.

--- The Khajuraho Temples, located in Madhya Pradesh, India, are among the finest examples of Indian art, architecture, and culture. Built between 950 and 1050 AD by the Chandela dynasty, these temples are renowned worldwide for their intricate carvings and unique blend of spirituality and sensuality. Originally, about 85 temples were constructed, but today only around 25 remain, preserved as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The temples are dedicated mainly to Hindu deities like Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi, along with a few Jain shrines. Their architectural style follows the Nagara school, with lofty spires (shikharas) symbolizing the cosmic mountain, Mount Meru. The most famous temples include Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, Lakshmana Temple, and Devi Jagadambi Temple. One of the most striking features of Khajuraho is its sculptural art. The walls are adorned with thousands of detailed stone carvings portraying gods, goddesses, celestial beings, animals, and everyday life scenes. The erotic sculptures, which often attract attention, actually represent only about 10% of the artwork. They are symbolic of the celebration of love, fertility, and the union of human and divine. Khajuraho is not just an architectural wonder but also a cultural treasure, reflecting India’s openness, creativity, and spiritual depth during the medieval period. Today, it remains a major tourist destination, attracting visitors from across the globe. ---

The Khajuraho Group of Temples is a breathtaking blend of spirituality, art, and ancient Indian craftsmanship. Each temple narrates stories of devotion and life through its stunning stone carvings and Nagara-style architecture. The lush gardens, serene lake, and peaceful ambiance make it a perfect retreat for history and culture lovers. Well-maintained premises, helpful staff, and nearby local markets enhance the visitor experience. Truly, Khajuraho stands as a timeless masterpiece of India’s glorious heritage.

It's very well maintained and worth the visit once in your lifetime. The history comes alive from the sculptures. A guide is needed to understand the sculptures and vaastu concepts properly. The only con is that there's no proper guide available. It's mentioned in the entry that audio guide is available but the visitor facility is permanently closed so you won't get it. The QR codes are also destroyed from the description panel so you can't access the written info.

Aadivart Tribal Museum in Khajuraho is a surprising gem that showcases the rich tribal art of Madhya Pradesh. The museum offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives, beliefs, and craftsmanship of the region's seven major tribes. Visitors can explore replicas of traditional houses, sculptures scattered throughout the grounds, and captivating displays of modern and traditional tribal art. Maintained by the Department of Culture, Madhya Pradesh, this educational attraction provides insight into how these communities live and utilize their natural resources.
Must visit when you come to khajuraho. Learn new knowledge about tribes in india. They make this so fun so adults and kids can enjoy their time in this museum. I just wish they can maintain it very well: like the building , restaurants and restrooms should always be clean so people from local and foreigners can have good time and memories here.

Aadivart Tribal Museum showcases traditional tribal houses, tools, and daily life, beautifully presenting how lifestyles have evolved over time. My favourite part of the museum was the gargantuan 3D wall illustration that tells the story of the life-giving river Narmada. At the center of the room stands a striking tree installation made of rope and traditional materials, enhancing the space remarkably. There's also a gallery displaying tribal jewellery and tattoo traditions. The museum is set amidst greenery and offers a calm, serene vibe. Entry fee is ₹20 for Indians. Photography is not allowed unless you purchase a ₹100 ticket per mobile or camera. A small cafeteria inside offers affordable snacks.

One of best Museum I have ever seen conserving the tribal culture, art, traditional instruments and architectural designs. A must visit at Khajuraho. Keep at least few hours time if you are interested in Gond and Bheel artforms...and life of the indigenous people of Central Indian landscape.

Very beautiful open-air museum of the life of indian tribes. Totaly must see when visiting Khajuraho. It is further from the city centre, and little bit hidden, but it is worth a visit. We have arrived at 8PM, when it was dark, but the buildings are nicely spotlighted. It is seen that the museum curator put a lot of thinking and effort in the exposition.

The Archaeological Museum Khajuraho, located just 800 meters from the Western Group of Temples, is a renowned attraction in Khajuraho. Established in 1910 to preserve loose sculptures found around the temples, it boasts over 1500 sculptures reflecting Hindu and Jain traditions. Managed by the tourism department, this museum offers a close-up view of an excellent collection and provides insight into Chandelas' history.
The museum is conveniently located pretty close to the western group of temples (shared a wall with Lalit Temple View Hotel). You can get through the museum in almost an hour. It has 3 galleries along with an open area. I’d recommend going through the museum before visiting the temples as it provides context.
Akash B — Google review
Try to visit this museum when it’s very hot outside and after you see the temples. I was able to see up close the sculptures and the explanations of each God, and description of the sculptures. It’s really worth the time to visit.
Titi E — Google review
You will find the sculptures with name tags in the classified galleries. You can identify and relate with the images you have seen in the temples.

What a Museum it is. A must-visit place if you’re a seeker of knowledge and appreciate beautiful sculptures as that is all this museum holds - All stone sculptures which look surreal. You can watch and learn from them up and close details and descriptions of each article are rightfully provided. The museum was clean and tidy with good amenities like cold drinking water, a sitting area, and clean washrooms. The tickets for the western group of temples are valid here (same-day tickets only) & the vice-versa Cost- 35₹ online, 50₹ offline for Indian citizens No charges for photography.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The monumental group of Khajuraho was brought to light by T.S Burt, a British engineer in 1838, and then work was carried out in detail by the study of Alexander Cunningham, between 1852 and 1863. It is believed that the nomenclature of Khajuraho is due to one of its gate which was ornamented with two golden Khajur trees (date palm) as per one tradition. A recent study highlight that celestial nymph has a scorpion (Khajur) on her thigh which mark the passion, possibly therefore the place was named Khajur-Vahaka or Khajuraho. During the Janapada time, the region was part of the Vatsa kingdom and then it came under the Mauryan supremacy which is known from Asokan rock edict at Gujjara in Datia district. However prior to Chandella the region has witnessed the rule of Kushanas, Nagas, Vakatakas, Imperial Guptas, and the Pratiharas. According to Chandellas and other contemporary records, the land was known as jejakbhukti or jejakabhukti, with a few derivative variants like jejahuti, jajhauti and jijhauti in Chandellas times. Mahoba inscription delineate the genealogy of Chandella dynasty and refers that the kingdom has been named after king Jeja. The earliest inscription of king Dhanga dated to 954 CE suggests the occupation of Khajuraho by the Chandella rulers. Alberuni in 1022 CE speak of the region as Jajahuti. The Madanpur inscription dated to 1182 CE refers the territory as Jajakabhukti or Jajakamandala. THE MUSEUM With keen interest and initiative of W.E. Jardine, the then political agent of Bundelkhand, the loose sculptures and other cultural edifices were collected from the ruined temples and preserved in an enclosure by means of which laid the foundation of museum in the year 1910. This thoughtful collection confined to be known as Jardine Museum. However, the present museum was conceptualized in 1952 after the Archaeological Survey of India took over charge and named it as Archaeological Museum. The preserved and display antiquities are primarily associated with the Chandella's, a powerful medieval dynasty who predominantly ruled over the region around Khajuraho anciently known as Kharjura-Vahaka and was religious capital city. The nucleus of the museum was a large collection of Brahmanical, Hindu, Jaina, and Buddhist sculptures and architectural parts of the temples. A good number of well carved sculptures are exhibited in the present museum, in a modern display concept. The New museum building is constructed near circuit house to display more number of antiquities. It consists of six galleries proposed for sculptures and architectural member. The antiquities are ranging from 9th to 12th Century CE, and throws significant light on social-cultural aspect of the region.

Khajuraho is one of the first historical place where a museum is not required. History is already alive at the temples. The museum has the same statues from the temple but you can see them up close. Most of the status are in good condition and you can understand them from the provided descriptions. No separate ticket is needed, the entry is free with the Western group of temples entry ticket.

The ASI museum at Khajuraho is a must visit. Located at a 10 mins walk away from the western group of temples, you do not need to purchase a separate ticket if you already have one for the temples. The museum is located on the ground floor and shuts at 5.30pm. The galleries are divided base on the deities. It takes about 30 mins to view the entire museum. There is drinking water and toilet facilities as well. I only wish they also had a publication counter like other museums.

The Khajuraho Western Group of Temples is a collection of ornate 11th-century temples built during the Chandela dynasty. This complex includes famous temples such as Lakhmana Temple, Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, Devi Jagdamba Temple, Chaunsat Yogini, Chitragupta Temple and Matanageswari Temple. These temples are known for their exquisitely intricate sculptures and stunning architecture.
Western Group of Temples: An absolute architectural marvel and a must-visit heritage site in India. The carvings on these 10th-century temples are incredibly detailed, showcasing not just religious themes but also glimpses of everyday life and cosmic philosophies. The Kandariya Mahadev Temple, in particular, stands out with its towering spire and mesmerizing sculptures. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the audio guides or local guides help bring the history alive. Come early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and cooler weather. Wonderful architecture, well maintained lawns. The archeological site is far better than other sites. It is worth to visit. However, one day seems sufficient for Khajuraho visit if you are not willing to visit nearby places.

Group of Khajuraho temples are a heritage site attracting thousands of Indian and foreign tourists. We were really amused by the elegant, beautiful, picturesque, and carved temples located in Khajuraho. And when we came to know the purpose of building these temples during the Chandela dynasty by the Kings, we realized how open our Hindu culture was and which believed in all round education of even taboo areas to all the strata of the societies. The Khajuraho temples are divided into different groups- western group, southern, and eastern, out of which western group of temples is the primary site and occupies mainland temples of significant importance. It usually takes around 2 hours to complete a detailed lookout of all the temples and its carvings from outside and inside. I would suggest one should keep your fear aside, ignore the smell of bats/bats in the hidden insides of some of the temples, and go for a detailed lookout of the carvings on walls to get a real perspective. The temples offer great clicks to visitors. Besides, a visit during sunset adds to the beauty of the temples with colorful cloudy backgrounds at times. The temples close at 6 pm and you are escorted out of the campus by security post the closing time. These temples were the highlight of our Bundelkhand region trip and you will be able to cover all the western, eastern, and southern temples within 4-5 hours. One should not miss your lunch or dinner in the restaurants situated in front of the western group gate i.e., Marwadi bhoj and Flavour's cafe which offered delicious and affordable food with a good variety.

Mesmerizing place to experience spiritual and cultural mixture with ultimate ecstasy. According to my personal experience one should visit here in second half of the day because before that it become too hot to roam around. Gardens here adds up beauty ofgtgis place.
AMIT S — Google review
Spread over large acreage, group of temples, are beautiful buildings. Access is on payment of entry fees by scanning code at the gate. Having survived over a millennium, these 10th Century temples built of sandstone and granite are crafted with finesse and imagination. Statues are in a manner integrated into architecture whereby elephants appear to be shouldering beams and weights above. Gardens in between temples are maintained and curated to provide a great scenic beauty. Temples in this compound are Kandariya, Jagadambi, Paravati, Visvanatha, Nandi Shrine, Chitragupta, Pratapeshwar, Lakshmana. In absence of pujaris and daily puja rituals access to inner sanctum is easy. Scan codes give description of each temple and therefore a guide is on your mobile. Indian Oil Corporation involvement in maintaining premises is noteworthy. Light and Sound show is held at this location. Explicit statues are a few, and mostly vandalised. Despite guards, young visitors climbing to get closer is always an irritating sight.

An absolute treat to the eyes if you love architecture, artisans those days knew something we don’t. A must visit place indeed magical🤌🏻
Soumya T — Google review
The carvings on the temples depict everyday scenes of a human being, both men and women. From intercourse to meditation, everything has been depicted. Sculptures depicting intercourse is only a tiny fraction of all that you'll see over here. There are several temples dedicated to different gods and goddesses in the entire complex. The Lakshmana Temple is perhaps the most visited temple, while the Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the largest one in Khajuraho. There's a Shivlinga inside the Kandariya Mahadev Temple that's still worshipped in today's date. To cover all the temples and carefully look at the carvings on the walls, you would need more than a day, to be honest. However, you can visit the main temples and go with a tourist guide who can explain the importance of the place. It usually takes 3–4 hours to explore the place with a guide and the entry fee is 35 rupees per person for Indian nationals.

The Kandariya Mahadev Temple is a stunning example of Hindu architecture, located in the Khajuraho Group of Temples. It was built between 950 A.D. and 1050 A.D. by the Chandella rulers as a tribute to Lord Shiva. The main tower, symbolizing Mount Kailash, is surrounded by over 80 smaller spires and the entire temple is made of sandstone with a granite foundation.
Review: The Kandariya Mahadev Temple is truly a masterpiece of Indian architecture and devotion. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it represents the height of Chandela dynasty art and craftsmanship. The intricate stone carvings, detailed sculptures, and the overall symmetry of the temple are absolutely breathtaking. Every corner tells a story — from divine deities to scenes of daily life, all carved with incredible precision. The temple is well-maintained, and the surroundings are peaceful, allowing visitors to feel a deep spiritual connection. Sunrise and sunset views here are mesmerizing, especially when the temple glows with golden light. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates history, art, or spirituality. Tip: Visit early morning to avoid the crowds and experience the divine atmosphere in calmness.

Stepping into the Khajuraho Group of Monuments is like entering a sprawling open-air museum, where every inch of sandstone tells a story. Far from the imposing forts found elsewhere, these temples emerge gracefully from lush gardens, initially appearing modest until you draw closer and their true grandeur, etched in intricate detail, becomes breathtakingly clear. This UNESCO World Heritage site, built by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050 CE, is a profound testament to ancient Indian art, architecture, and a remarkably holistic view of human existence. The architecture itself is a marvel, primarily adhering to the Nagara style of North Indian temple building. Temples like the magnificent Kandariya Mahadeva, the largest and grandest, are characterized by their soaring shikharas (spires) that mimic mountain peaks, symbolic of Mount Meru. Each structure is a complex assemblage of interconnected halls, including the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, mahamandapa, and various other chambers, all meticulously planned and executed. The transition from the naturally lit exterior to the cave-like ambience of the sanctum creates a deliberate spiritual journey for the devotee. However, what truly sets Khajuraho apart are its sculptures. These are not merely decorative elements but a cinematic window into a world long gone. The temple walls are profusely carved with anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic motifs, depicting a vibrant tapestry of sacred and secular themes. There are gods and goddesses, celestial beings (apsaras and sura-sundaris), musicians, dancers, warriors, and scenes from daily life – potters shaping clay, hunters stalking prey, yogis in trance. And, of course, the famously explicit erotic sculptures. These aren't isolated curiosities but are woven seamlessly into the narrative of life, celebrating love, procreation, and fertility as integral aspects of human experience and spiritual awakening. They are a powerful expression of kama, one of the four aims of Hindu life, presented not in isolation but alongside scenes of devotion and philosophical contemplation. The Western Group of temples, including Lakshmana Temple and Kandariya Mahadeva, are generally considered the most impressive due to their scale and the sheer volume and artistry of their carvings. The Lakshmana Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is particularly striking with its two prominent bands of sculptures depicting battles, hunting, and graceful female figures. The overall impression is one of harmonious integration, where the sculptures are not merely additions but are inseparable from the architectural design, creating a rhythmic flow across the temple surfaces. A visit to Khajuraho is more than just sightseeing; it's an immersive experience that challenges preconceived notions about ancient Indian culture. It prompts contemplation on the intertwining of the sacred and the sensual, the divine and the human. To truly appreciate the depth and intricacy of these stone manuscripts, one must slow down, observe closely, and allow the whispering stones to tell their tales. The best time to visit is undoubtedly during the cooler winter months (November to February), when the pleasant weather allows for comfortable exploration of these timeless masterpieces.

Lost in Khajuraho’s timeless beauty, where history whispers and art finds its voice. A masterpiece etched in stone — not just a journey to escape life, but to touch its ancient soul. Each step feels like walking through a thousand years of living poetry.

A small temple dedicated to Lord Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It has simple carvings, not as detailed as other temples in Khajuraho. The place is quiet and not crowded, making it a nice spot for a relaxing visit.

The Vamana Temple is a must-visit for anyone exploring the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. It offers a glimpse into the rich artistic and religious heritage of India, showcasing the unique blend of spirituality and artistic expression that characterized the Chandela era. This temple dedicated to the Vamana form of Vishnu, is situated about 200 m. to the north-east o the so-called brahma temple. It is nirandhara (one without ambulatory) temple, consisting on plan of a sapta-ratha (seven-projection) sanctum, vestibule, maha-mandapa with lateral transepts and entrance-porch, of which only the plinth has survived. Its sikhara is unencumbered by any subsidiary sikharas and is embellished with a fret-work of chaitya-arches, contrast to the developed local temples, erotic scenes are absent here, except in the subsidiary niches of the proof-pediments. It is also noteworthy for showing over the maha-mandapa a peculiar roof known as samvarana which is characteristic of the medieval temples of western India. The absence of the dhammilla- type of head-dress on the sura-sundari figures indicates that the temple is later than the Kandariya, the sculptural types and style of which it continues. This temple is, therefore, assignable to circa 1050-75. (Information from ASI)

The Vamana Temple in Khajuraho is a lesser-known yet captivating part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s Vamana (dwarf) incarnation. Key Highlights: 1. Architecture: Simple but elegant design with intricate carvings showcasing apsaras, deities, and mythical scenes. 2. Atmosphere: Peaceful and less crowded, ideal for those seeking solitude. 3. Location: Situated in the eastern group of temples, around 2 km from the main town. 4. Best Time: Visit early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the carvings in natural light. Tips: • Exploration Time: Requires about 30-40 minutes to explore. • Nearby Attractions: Combine with visits to the nearby Javari and Brahma temples. • Essentials: Carry water and wear comfortable footwear for walking. The Vamana Temple is a serene spot that highlights the understated charm of Khajuraho’s rich heritage.

Raja Cafe Restaurant is a well-established Indian dining spot known for its leafy garden courtyard and diverse menu of cafe-style dishes. Situated near the hotel Siddhartha, opposite the western group of temples in Sevagram, Khajuraho, this restaurant has been catering to tourists for nearly 40 years.
Heaven sent option right in front of the actual Western group of temples at Khajuraho. We toured the temples between 9:45-12:00 pm. The weather was pleasant enough, but of course sunny as hell. Imagine coming out of the sun into the AC and getting served chilled beer. An absolute treat. Good food options, very conveniently located, and tourist friendly. I asked them to refill my bottle and they did with chilled RO water. Served me RO water without any fuss.

Located just opposite the exit point for the Western group of Khajuraho temples. Went for both lunch and dinner. At first the prices seems a bit expensive, but the portion size is huge. Tried honey sesame chicken for starters and chicken pizza. Both were good. Huge and more than enough for 2 people. Also, had fresh lime soda, in which they provide a whole bottle for soda. For dinner, tried carbonara pasta. Again huge quantity, creamy and delicious. Chicken sizzler was also good.

While coming here, first of all you should know that Khajuraho is a village and food served in restaurants here is basic except hifi resorts n hotels. Don't compare with a tier 1 city. Keeping this in mind Raja cafe is the best cafe among the category. Service here is good. We were the first visitor and they switched on the AC without asking for. The paranthas were ok ok, with need of more stuffing. English breakfast was very good. Cold coffee was good n made of thick milk. It's just beside the union bank ATM, a few metres away from the exit gate of the temples. Highly recommend to come here.

It's very convenient and easy as it is the only one with terrace and looking straight into the temple. Nothing too special and food was not amazing but you pay for the location and it has western menu that fits everyone. Wifi was not working Food ok just ok Coffee not great Clean place though Quiet atmosphere

It has only a few tables with temple view and they're mostly occupied from the evening. Otherwise the seating area is nice there's outdoor plus indoor. The roof top seating has a very steep and tiny spiral staircase. The food is nice better than the rest of the cafes in the area but the service is pathetic. They take forever to bring anything.

The views and the top sitting is amazing but the food quality is a bit low. I got a molded bread so i hope It’s not healthy and they use old raw materials.

Shiv Mahima Restaurant in Khajuraho is a fantastic spot if you're looking for good food that doesn't break the bank. It’s run by a lovely family who make you feel like part of their own. Vicky and his parents are incredibly kind and always go the extra mile to make sure you’re comfortable. The food is just amazing—we ended up having breakfast, lunch, and dinner there! Yes, it takes a bit of time, but that’s because everything is cooked fresh and is super healthy. We tried dishes like Kadhai Paneer, Plain Roti, Cutlet, Aalo Paratha, Aalo Pyaaz Paratha, Mixed Paratha, Aalo Gobhi Sabzi, Boondi Raita, Soyabean Butter Masala, French Fries, Malai Kofta, etc, and they were all delicious. If you go, definitely try the Aloo Paratha, Boondi Raita, and Cutlet. Huge thanks to the family for their wonderful hospitality!

Kalinjar Fort is a captivating destination that beautifully intertwines history, spirituality, and nature. Nestled atop the Vindhya ranges, this ancient fortress boasts impressive stone walls and gateways that have withstood the test of time. As you explore its grounds, you'll encounter intricate carvings, ancient temples, and stepwells that showcase remarkable architectural artistry. The fort's elevated position offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape—a reward for those who brave the steep ascent to reach it.
Kalinjar Fort is one of those places where history, spirituality, and nature come together beautifully. Perched on the Vindhya ranges, the fort has an aura of strength and mystery, with massive stone walls and gateways that still stand tall. Inside, you’ll find ancient temples, sculptures, and stepwells that reflect both cultural richness and architectural brilliance. Every corner seems to whisper stories of battles, dynasties, and faith. What makes Kalinjar Fort truly special is the peaceful vibe it carries despite its historic battles. From the top, the panoramic view of the surrounding plains is simply breathtaking, especially during sunrise or sunset. Walking through the fort feels less like visiting a monument and more like stepping into a living legend of Bundelkhand. It’s a hidden gem for history lovers, explorers, and anyone who enjoys soaking in the grandeur of the past.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Kalinjar Fort, and it was truly a fascinating experience. Perched high on the Vindhya range, the fort offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The climb to the top is a bit challenging but absolutely worth it for the sense of history and the stunning scenery. The architecture inside the fort is awe-inspiring. From the massive stone gates to the ancient temples like the Neelkanth Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, every corner has a story to tell. The carvings and inscriptions are remarkably well-preserved, reflecting the rich heritage of the Chandela dynasty. I was particularly intrigued by the underground water reservoirs and secret passages, which hint at the fort's strategic importance. What stood out most was the peaceful atmosphere. Despite its turbulent past, Kalinjar feels serene and spiritual. It’s a place where history, mythology, and nature beautifully converge. However, I do wish the site was better maintained in parts, and that there were more guides or information boards to help visitors understand the historical context. Overall, Kalinjar Fort is a hidden gem that deserves more attention. It’s perfect for history enthusiasts, trekkers, or anyone looking for a quiet, meaningful escape.

🏯The fort of Kalanjar is situated 90 miles to the west-south-west of Allahabad, and 60 miles to the north-west of Rewa. The fort stands on an isolated flat-topped hill of the Vindhya range, which here rises to a height of 800 feet above the plain. The lower part of the ascent is tolerably easy, but the middle portion is very steep, while the upper part is nearly perpendicular and quite inaccessible. The main body of the fort, which lies from east to west, is oblong in form, being nearly a mile in length by half a mile in breadth. At the north angle there is a large projecting spur nearly a quarter of a mile square, which overhangs the town; and on the middle of the southern face there is another projection of about the same size, but triangular in shape. The distance between the extreme points of these two projections is nearly 1 mile. The whole area is therefore considerably less than 1 square mile, while the parapet walls are nearly 4 miles in length.

Vishwanatha Temple (1002 CE). The Vishwanatha Temple, is third largest temple of Khajuraho Temples, stands on the north-east extreme of the Western group of temples. Architecturally, the temple falls between the other largest Lakshmana and Kandariya Mahadeva temples. A precursor in design and ornamentation to the Kandariya Mahadeva, this is one of the finest and best preserved temples at Khajuraho. ARCHITECTURE Among the Khajuraho temples, Visvanatha temple is the finest and best preserved example of Chandella architecture and is dedicated to the Lord Shiva. It used to be a Panchayatana shrine but now, out of its four subsidiary shrines only two. ie. Northeast and Southwest exists. The structure shows all the elements of a developed temple including the mukha-mandapa (entrance porch), mandapa, maha-mandapa with transepts, antarala and grabha-griha enclosed by an inner ambulatory with transepts on the sides and rear. The basement niches and the three banded sculptured wall displays some of the finest carvings amongst which is a unique depiction of the dancing Saptamatrikas, the Seven Mothers. Inside, depictions of a mother with a child, a woman with a fruit in one hand and a parrot in another, a surasundari playing the flute and another painting her foot, are quite unique. HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS King Dhanga was great ruler and builder. He annexed many new areas and expanded his territory. He made Chandella as powerful as the Pratihara and discarded tutelage to them and title himself Maharadiraja. The Mandapa inscription refers to the dedications of two Lingas, one made of emerald and the other of stone in a towering temple of Shiva Marakateshvara built by the Chandella king Dhanga in the Vikrama year 1059 (1002 C.E.) although, only stone Linga survived in the temple. There is no doubt that the inscription refers to the Visvanatha temple. As per the inscription, the architect of the temple was Sutradhara Chhichchha, who was well versed in Vishvakarma architectural tradition. Rishabam Temple /Nandi Temple (1002 CE) Facing the Vishwanatha Temple and on the same platform, this temple enshrines a colossal statue of Rishabam, the bull mount/Vahana of Shiva. The Rishaba is measuring 7' 3" in length and 6' in height. The polished monolithic sculpture of yellow sandstone is represented wearing a garland decorated with mani bandha (alternating diamonds and roses).

the Kashi Vishwanath Temple are generally positive, highlighting the incredible energy, the beauty and spaciousness of the newly renovated corridor, and the overall cleanliness. Visitors frequently praise the improvements to the complex, which includes new walkways, auditoriums, and guest houses. Some reviewers also mention the importance of visiting the nearby Kaal Bhairav temple to complete the pilgrimage.

The Visvantha temple, enshrining a Siva-linga, is among the finest temples, of Khajuraho with all the elements of the developed temple-type, viz. entrance-porch, mandapa, maha-mandapa with transepts, vestibule and sanctum enclosed by an ambulatory with transepts on the sides and the rear. Like the Lakshmana temple, it was a temple of the panchayatana variety, but of the four subsidiaries only two survive— in the north-east and south-west corners. Architecturally this temple comes midway between the Lakshmana and the Kandariya-Mahadeva and its importance lies in the fact that it anticipates the Kandariya, which marks the culmination of the central Indian building-style. Three sculptural bands of equal size on the facades of the jangha (wall) and the representation on the basement niches of the seven Mothers with Ganesa on one end and Virabhadra on the other are peculiar to this as well as the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple at Khajuraho. Even the sikharas of the two temples are essentially similar in design, though that of Visvanatha is appreciable simpler, showing fewer minor sikharas. This temple has indeed the most proportionate sculptures with admirable poise and balance, which include figures of sura-sundaris and couples, erotic or otherwise. A long foundation inscription fixed in this temple states that two Sivalingas, one of stone and the other of emerald (after which the temple in named Marakatesara) was enshrined in this temple, built by the Chandelle king Dhanga in A.D. 999. (Information from ASI)

Matangeshwara Temple This temple faces east, enshrines one of the largest Siva-Lings of North India. Shiva is called as Matangeshwara and one of the living temple of the Khajuraho temples. This is situated by south of Lakshmana Temple. This has one of the largest Shiva Lingam, of North India measures 2.53 m and one meter in diameter. ARCHITECTURE At the centre of the small sanctum hall, a huge pedestal supports a colossal Shivalinga. Symbol of the procreative energy of Shiva. The basement mouldings and the jangha have similar designs and are fairly plain. With a simple structure of a Vimana, A flag on its pyramid shaped roof Indicates that it is still in use for worship. It stands on a lofty platform and shows a grand elaboration of Brahma temple on plan and design. Internally it is in square shape and externally cruciform and has a grand stepped pyramidal roof. The temple has devoid the exuberant sculpture and ornamentation, which came to be a hallmark of the developed Khajuraho temples. HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION The temple is ascribed to the fifth Chandella ruler, Harshadeva. It is believed that he died before he could complete its construction and to commemorate him the structure was converted to that of a Vimana, indicating that it was a swargarohan (funerary) temple dedicated to Shiva.

Great food, specifically of the South Italian variety. While we did visit this during off season, the food was prepared to order and fresh. The simplicity of Italian cuisine means that the taste and quality of the raw materials cannot be hidden behind spices and condiments. I'm happy to report that the place indeed ensures high quality vegetables and oils, evident from the taste and depth of flavour. My only critisism - the price was high, considering that there are buses and cabs blaring deafeningly loud horns to the point that I had to shout to keep my conversation going. So yes, the atmosphere is as good as a roadside stall. But 10/10 marks on the food.
Selenium G — Google review
Average food. Prices are on a little higher side for the quantity of food provided. We ordered egg based carbonara and ravioli. Carbonara had some good taste due to Egg in the sauce but ravioli sauce was just tomato puree.

I must say this is a good place for food. Very tasty food with great service. I have ordered pasta and chicken, I loved that food. If you are travelling to khajuraho then you can stop here for dinner or lunch. Near Khajuraho temple. Indian and Italian food are there with good taste. But I must say this is an expensive place and normally with pasta every restaurant gives bread. Here we had to buy bread with pasta and 2 slices of bread that cost me 225rs. Which is too much for bread and this should be free with pasta.
Piyali D — Google review
A pretty decent restaurant with a great view. It is hardly a two minute walk from the Khajuraho temples. Sitting is great and are hygienic specially during Covid. Their pizza is of decent size and tastes good. Their pizza base crest is ultra thin and crispy. Cannot compare it with the big pizza companies like Domino's and pizza hut, but yes it has its own desi style. You must try other options as well. They have pretty good menu.

A beautiful cafe it was. The food was good, ambience was good but the best thing about this cafe was the staff behavior. I would love to visit this place again if I am in Khajuraho ever..
Soumava G — Google review
The coffee is great and the price is commensurate with the price/location. Didn’t try the food. I was the only person at the restaurant, and the service was excellent. The cool breeze on the rooftop is much appreciated. Gets a bit noisy from the honking from vehicles on the street, because, India.

The Javari Temple in Khajuraho is a must-see attraction known for its intricate design and beautiful shrine surrounded by divine figures. Despite being named after the landowner, it is believed to be dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple's extraordinary architecture, located amidst lush greenery in the eastern part of Khajuraho, features exquisite images of men and women on its walls and pillars.
This temple dedicated to Vishnu, is situated about 200 meters to the south of the Vamana temple. It is a small but well-proportioned nirandhara temple, consisting of a sanctum, vestibule mandapa and portico. It is a gem of architecture and is indeed remarkable as much for its ornate makara-torana as for the slender and soaring outline of its sikhara. The carving and the three bands of sculptures on its outer walls are as rich as on the larger temples. Generally, it resembles the Chaurbuja temple and is datable between circa 1075 and 1100. (Information from ASI)

Javari Temple (1075-1100 CE) The temple dedicated to Vishnu resembles the Chaturbhuj Temple and likewise has no pradakshina. Except the sanctum shikhara that has been restored, the temple stands intact and is the smallest among the developed Khajuraho temples. Circular frames, crowned with a diamond, arch the niches in the lower row of the walls, a unique feature of the temple and the ornate four looped makara torana embellishes the entrance. HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS This temple is also one of the oldest temples of Khajuraho. Historians believe that this temple may be constructed by Chandella rulers during 1075-1100 CE.
Veludharan — Google review
Constructed in the 1075-1100 century AD, the proportionate structure of this temple has a sanctum sanctorum, antarala, a mandapa and a front pavilion. This temple is adorned with exquisite Makara-torana and beautiful spire. The outer walls of the temple are adorned with beautiful sculptures which are engraved in three rows. This temple is one of the most ornate temples in the eastern temple chain of Khajuraho. Apart from this, other featured bear similarity to the pre-medieval temple structure of central India.

Part of eastern group of temples but completely ignored. Trash and smell everywhere. Not safe to go as it's very quiet.

The Javari Temple in Khajuraho, India, is a remarkable testament to the rich cultural and architectural heritage of ancient India. As part of the renowned Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple stands as a proud symbol of the artistic brilliance of the Chandela dynasty. Constructed between approximately 975 and 1100 A.D., the Javari Temple is a stunning example of the Nagara style of temple architecture. Despite being one of the smaller temples in the Khajuraho complex, it possesses an undeniable charm and elegance that captivates every visitor. The temple's intricate carvings and sculptures showcase the high level of craftsmanship that has made Khajuraho famous around the world. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and the sanctum houses a beautiful statue of the deity. The exterior of the temple is adorned with detailed sculptures, each telling its own story, depicting various aspects of life, mythology, and divinity. The ornate shikhara (spire) of the temple adds to its grandeur, reaching towards the sky as a symbolic connection between the earthly and the divine. The peaceful ambiance of the Javari Temple, combined with its historical significance and architectural beauty, makes it a must-visit for anyone exploring Khajuraho. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an admirer of art and architecture, or a spiritual seeker, the Javari Temple offers a profound experience that is both visually and spiritually enriching. Javari Temple is a hidden gem within the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, offering a perfect blend of history, art, and spirituality. It is a site that will leave you with a deep appreciation for the timeless beauty and cultural legacy of ancient India.

Javari Temple Falling under the Eastern group of Khajuraho temples, the Javari temple is considered one of the most significant structures on the site. Built between 1075 and 1100, Javari Temple stands on a high platform. The name Javari is believed to be derived from the one-time owner of the land, because there is no deity bearing this name. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Javari Temple is quite popular amongst tourists. The temple is constructed between 1075 and 1100 CE and displays the ancient Khajuraho architecture. The sanctum of Javari Temple contains a four-armed idol of Lord Vishnu, though it is now broken and headless. The various sculptures on the walls of the temples depict men and women in various postures

Dulhadev Shiva Temple, also known as Duladeo Temple, is an ancient Hindu shrine located in the Southern Group of Khajuraho Temples. Built between 1000 and 1150 CE, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features intricate carvings of Apsaras and other ornate figures.
Duladeva Temple (c. 1100-50 CE) This Shiva temple is locally called as ‘Duladeo’, refers to a local tribal myth of Dulhadeva who, like the corn spirit, is wedded and slain amidst marriage celebrations, as part of fertility rituals. A Shiva temple, the iconography on this temple shows some distinctive traits. The octagonal hall of the maha mandapa has the largest diameter (18½ feet) among all the Khajuraho temples. The Ashtavasus are depicted with crocodile mounts instead of the usual bull and the curls of Dikpalas, Yama and Nirriti form a stylised fan shape. Though highly ornamented, the sculptures become repetitive and lack depth. This is also the only temple where figures are depicted wearing ornaments on the forelegs. HISTORY & INSCRIPTIONS This is the last temple in the chronology of Khajuraho temple, built in about 1130 CE, constructed by Chandella king Madana Varman. The temple displays a marked change in its sculptural style from the earliest temple figures in sharp and angular posture.

Much quieter and less crowded, which gave a peaceful atmosphere to soak in the beauty. The Dulhadev Temple was the highlight for me — elegant carvings and a serene ambiance. It’s a great place to sit and reflect without the bustle of tourists. While not as grand as the Western Group, it’s definitely worth visiting for its spiritual vibe and unique charm.

Temple on the east corner of the Khajuraho group of monuments - peaceful and usually without much crowd. The sculptures on the outer walls are just as beautiful as the other monuments, each one telling its own story. Definitely worth a visit if you have time in your itinerary

Duladeo Temple, also known as Kunwar Math, is Khajuraho’s youngest Shiva shrine, built between 1000–1150 AD Situated by the Khodar River in the southern complex, it features a grand octagonal mandapa with twenty apsara brackets A unique linga with 999 mini‑lingas equals 1,000 circumambulations in one go

Dulhadev Temple is also known as Kunwar Math. This is the newest temple among the Khajuraho temples. This east facing temple is dedicated to Shiva. This temple is built on the Nirandhara style which is without circumbulatory path. This temple has sanctum-sanctorum with huge sikhara, antarala, mukhamandapa, mahamandapa. Some influence of Deccan and West Indian temple art is seen in this temple. The temple has a shikhara with three projections having rows of miniature shikhara. The Maha-mandapa of this temple is very ornate and octagonal, on which 20 brackets have been made in which the statues of Apsaras were installed. There are many such decorations in the Dulhadev temple that differentiate this temple from other temples of Khajuraho. The Gandharvas, Apsaras and other idols displayed in the temple have been made commonly in similar fashion. The river-goddesses have been depicted on the door way of sanctum sanctorum. Among other statues, goddesses, deities, gatekeepers etc. are also seen in this temple. This temple was built in Circa 1100-1150 AD.

Total Disappointment! Paid ₹260 for chowmein that tasted below average, with a portion so small it could barely fill a child. Food overpriced, service painfully slow, ambience pathetic (ACs were dead), and to add insult – they charged ₹30 for a ₹20 Sprite. Never again! 🚫

We went very early morning and ordered puri bhaji. We asked about the portion size and they said one plate won’t be sufficient for two. So we ordered two plates and seriously it was too much for one person. 5 pooris with a very tasty aalu matar bhaji. We loved it but couldn’t finish and it was way too heavy on the stomach.

Visited there on 11Nov2023.The hotel looked good from outside so we went in. But it was a dhaba style restaurant. It was already 9.30pm and we had no other option so we ordered the food. Food was just ok and rates were unjustified . Washroom and handwash areas were really bad. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel in Khajuraho. The rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable, offering everything we needed for a relaxing stay. The staff was exceptionally kind and helpful, always ready to assist with a smile. The location was also great – peaceful yet close to the main attractions. I had a lovely stay at this hotel. The staff were incredibly polite and attentive, making the overall experience feel welcoming and comfortable. The rooms were clean, and the amenities were well-maintained. However, I did find the food to be quite expensive considering the type of hotel it is. While the quality of the meals was decent, the pricing felt a bit steep compared to other options in the area. That being said, it didn't take away from the overall pleasant stay, but it's worth noting for future guests.

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Parvati Hill. Parvati Hill is a verdant 640m mount in Pune, offering a serene getaway amidst nature. The hill features stairs leading to a summit with panoramic views of the Sahyadri hills and the cityscape. It is adorned with several Hindu temples nestled amid lush green forests, creating an ideal setting for hiking and exploration.
Parvati Hill is one of the best places to visit in Pune for peace, nature, and great views. The short 20-minute trek is easy and enjoyable, perfect for a morning or evening walk. The view of Pune city from the top is amazing, especially during sunrise or sunset. It’s a calm and spiritual spot, great for photography and quiet time. It can be a bit crowded on weekends. Overall, it’s a must-visit place to enjoy nature, history, and a peaceful vibe. Note: Parking can be challenging for cars
Pravin — Google review
My weekend gate-away, still in the heart of the city and not too far from wherever you live in Pune. This place is full of history, divinity and culture. The museum has its history stored neatly, the temples are still gorgeous, trees shower you with seasonal flowers and the beautiful view from above makes every step you climbed up, worth it. There is so much in this small hill that one can never guess. But great for morning walks/small climbs and some oxygen away from the crowd. It’ll still be crowded on weekends. We all love this place and will keep coming here till our knees give up❤️
Laxmi G — Google review
Parvathi Hill in Pune offers a serene escape from the city's chaos. Entry is free. Street parking is available. The hill isn't difficult to climb, and the scenic views from the top are awesome. I visited on a weekend, and surprisingly, the crowd was manageable. The climb is a great way to stay active while enjoying nature's beauty. If you're looking for a peaceful retreat, a spiritual experience, or a quick workout, this hill has something to offer.
Ajin T — Google review
Location is great there is also a museum next to temple, also there is a shop on the hill top you can have tea and some snacks. Place maintenance is little poor. Note: there is no car parking, so you will have to park your car on the road then climb up.
Amit — Google review
This is one of my most favourite places in Pune! This hill houses two temples and is also the resting place of one of the Bajirao family members. The walk up isn't very easy as there are 100+ steps but the beautiful temple and the views around will simply take your heart away. There is a small cafe up there but nothing great. The sun temple has another floor that you can climb for 20 Rs. The place also has a museum that has loads of old artifacts and Mughal coins to look at. You can't click pics of the museum but I'm sure there's lots to absorb being up there This hill is one of the highest points of Pune. A must visit to all Punekars and non Punekars !
Nyesha S — Google review
I went with my brother and my friend for an evening stroll after having our daily 5pm coffee. We didn't expect it to turn out this good, we were planning to visit some other place but unfortunately (fortunately tbh) the entry was closed and we thought "let's give parvati hills a shot". Like they say unexpected journeys reveal the best destinations, it was true. If you're going, go after 5pm. You can see the cotton candy skies or autumn fire skies if it's not cloudy or rainy. But night view remains the same. It's mesmerizing. You wouldn't want to blink when you're adoring the view. You'll feel like you're in a movie(major la la land vibes or perks of being a wallflower vibes). Then you'll think "almost forgot that this was the whole point".
Kai — Google review
Parvati Hill is a beautiful blend of tranquility, history, and nature. It is one of the highest points in Pune, offering a spectacular view of the entire city. The sunsets here are truly a sight to behold. This hill is home to several ancient temples and a museum showcasing artifacts from the Peshwa era. The climb up the hill is made easy by a set of well-maintained stairs and isn't too difficult. Parvati Hill is a popular spot, especially in the mornings, evenings, and on weekends, despite the crowds, the atmosphere remains peaceful and serene. There is no entry fee to climb the hill, and parking is also available. it's a perfect spot to spend a peaceful and memorable time with family.
Amisha K — Google review

Nestled in the heart of India, the Khajuraho Railway Station serves as a gateway to this UNESCO World Heritage site, though it has limited direct connections to various cities across the country. Travelers can hop on the Khajuraho-Hazrat Nizamuddin Express from New Delhi, which offers a scenic journey lasting approximately 10 to 11 hours. For those looking for more options, Mahoba station is just 75 km away and connects Khajuraho with additional destinations.
Small railway station. We have to board Vande Bharat to Delhi...& I must say that this is one of the cleanest railway stations in India. I also appreciate the staff who maintains platforms. No traffic jams outside & no rush of passengers on platforms. Delighted to see the facilities there. 💖💖

Khajuraho railway station is located in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh and serves as an entry point for the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, medieval Hindu famous for their erotic sculptures. Between 950 and 1150, the Chandela monarchs built these temples.
Rajat M — Google review
A decent station with large space and cleanliness compared to its northern counterparts. Given the station is located on a off-route, it has very few trains for all-India tourists. Given the city is known for its beautiful, medieval temples, the entrance of the station gate resembles small temple tombs. MP Tourism stall and One District One Product stall are a few shop one must visit. The station could use a waiting room for AC1, AC2, AC3, and sleep class passengers.
Anshul S — Google review
Khajuraho railway station (KURJ) sits a few kilometers outside the main town, so reaching the temples usually requires a short taxi/auto ride. It’s a relatively small station with limited train connectivity compared to bigger nearby junctions like Mahoba or Satna. On-site amenities are basic—think standard waiting areas and a few small shops—so don’t expect many facilities. Plan transport in advance, especially for late arrivals, since services thin out after hours.
Nikk B — Google review
Khajuraho Junction, located in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, serves as the vital rail gateway to the world-famous Khajuraho Group of Monuments. This station handles around 3,000 passengers daily and is well connected by trains to major cities such as Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Kanpur, and Varanasi, making it highly accessible for travelers hoping to explore the historical and cultural treasures of the region. The station offers basic amenities including waiting rooms, cloak rooms, and small local shops selling maps, enhancing passenger convenience during their journey. The importance of Khajuraho Junction goes beyond mere transit; it symbolizes the access point to the exquisite medieval Hindu temples built by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1150 CE. These temples are renowned for their unique Nagara-style architecture and intricately carved erotic sculptures that showcase ancient Indian artistry and symbolism. The Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, includes 23 temples spread over a scenic landscape, featuring a high terraced platform, richly decorated sanctums, and towering spires representing Mount Kailasa, the abode of the gods. For visitors interested in history, architecture, and culture, Khajuraho Junction is the starting spot for an unforgettable heritage experience amidst the beautifully maintained temple grounds and their mythological depictions. The railway station itself is functional, with three platforms and daily connectivity by express and local trains, ensuring ease of travel for tourists. Whether visiting for spiritual exploration or architectural wonder, arriving at Khajuraho Junction promises an enriching gateway to one of India’s most treasured heritage sites.

I recently visited the Adinath Temple in Moheshkhali, and it was a truly memorable experience. This is a must-see spot, especially for those from the Hindu community visiting Cox’s Bazar. The temple area has a peaceful spiritual vibe, along with beautiful surroundings that make it worth exploring. We reached Moheshkhali by speed boat (Tk. 130 per person) and then hired an auto for Tk. 700, which took us around all the famous spots, including the temple. I only wish I had taken more photos to capture the charm of the area. Highly recommend visiting if you want to experience both spirituality and the scenic beauty of Moheshkhali.

A tourist friendly hindu temple with stunning sea and mangrove forest view. Propeller of a air based power plant make the view more cinematic. To enjoy the view you have to climb some staircase to reach the top of a small hill where the actual structure of the temple. Yes, It is a very good tourist attraction but a good thing to keep in mind that it is also a holy place for people believe in hinduism. Please do not engage in any activity that might insult the belief of hindu community.

This temple is situated on the top of Moinak hill. You need to climb lots of stairs but its definitely worthy. Once you reach the top, you will experience a beautiful scenario. Multiple shrines and full of locals praying and making offerings. It's very colorful and well worth a visit. The temple has an ancient history of its own. Popular place among the Hindu's.

The Chaturbhuj Temple, dating back to the 11th or 12th century, is a Hindu temple located in the Khajuraho temple complex. It was built by the Chandela dynasty and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is famous for its 2.7-meter-tall statue of Lord Vishnu with four hands, which gives it the name "Chaturbhuj."
Chaturbhuj Temple (1100 CE) Other than the Lalguan Mahadeva Temple, this is the only other west-facing temple. Similar in plan to the Javari Temple, the ambulatory, vestibule and the mandapa are missing and the entrance is really small. The conspicuous absence of erotic sculptures is quite unique. The sanctum has a sunken floor to accommodate the nine feet high massive image of four armed Dakshinamurti Shiva in such a way so that when the image is on the pedestal, the feet are on the same level as the doorway. One of the finest sculptures of Khajuraho, it is the only one rendered in the tribhanga pose. HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS Jayavarman The Chaturbhuja temple was constructed during the Chandela King Jayavarman’s time. In one inscription of Kalinjara, he voluntarily abdicated the throne and proceeded to the divine river to wash away his sins.

Chaturbhuj Temple in Khajuraho’s southern group, built around 1100 CE by the Chandela dynasty, honors Lord Vishnu. Unique for its west‑facing orientation and absence of erotic sculptures, it stands on a raised platform with a porch, mandapa, and sanctum. Inside is a majestic 9‑ft, four‑armed Vishnu idol.

One of the corner temples of the 4 corners of the Khajuraho group of temples - doesn’t see many people as it’s in a distant corner. But the beauty is totally worth visiting - from the main Shiva statue to the intricate stone carvings on the walls. A peaceful spot to explore without the crowds.

This temple is situated at a distance of 600 meters in the south-west direction of Jatkara villge, about 3 km from Khajuraho. This temple is built on the Nirandhara style and it is situated on a high platform. This temple has main gate, mandapa, antarala, sanctum-sanctorum and simple shikhar etc. On the outer wall of this temple, decorated statues and Gandharvas etc. have been marked in 3 rows. This is one such temple in khajuraho which lacks Mithun figures. The Chaturbhuji- Dakshinamurti (2.7 meters) of Shiva installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is very picturesque. In this statue, Shiva is presented in a tribhanga posture and the expression of the face of the statue is very gentle which presents the culmination of idol art. River goddesses Ganga and Yamuna on their respective besides maker (crocodile) and kachchapa (tortoise) are depicted on either side of the sanctum. The construction period of this temple is believed to be 1100 AD.

This is the farthest temple situated about 3 km. South of Khajuraho and 600 m south-west of the Jatkari village. It is a nirandhara temple of modest size similar to the Javari, and consists on the plan of a sanctum carrying a simple sikhara of heavy proportions, vestibule, mandapa and porch. The temple shows some notable features. This is the only developed local temple which lacks erotic sculptures. Although the temple is girdled round by the three usual bands of sculptures, all figures, except those of the vidyadharas in the top row, are stereotyped. The large (2.7 m high) image of four-armed enshrined in the sanctum, however is remarkable for its expression of transcendental clam and basis. The consort of Narasimha, figured in the northern niche of the sanctum façade, is also noteworthy. The temple anticipates the Duladeo in many features of plastic style and ornaments and is datable to circa 1100. (Information from ASI)

The only good thing about restaurant is the ambience. Food is just average. We ordered kadhai paneer, mix veg and daal tadka. Dall was ok with no tadka. Mix veg had lot of gravy and just paneer and carrot. Paneer padhai again had big chunks of paneer and the same gravy of mix veg. No spices or aroma besides the gravy which is being used multiple times. Since it has good ambience scope is definitely there but we were disappointed with food. Tried it after seeing reviews but not sure how people rated it so high

Chausath Yogini Temple, located in Khajuraho, India, is a ruined Hindu temple that is part of the Western Group of Temples. Dating back to 900 AD, it is considered one of the oldest surviving temples in the area and has been designated as a Monument of National Importance. Dedicated to the 64 Yoginis, powerful goddesses in Hindu mythology, this ancient temple features a rectangular shape unlike other circular Yogini temples in India.
This earliest surviving temple in Khajuraho derives its name from the 64 (chausath, in Hindi) female goblins who attended the goddess Kali in her slaughter. There was a principal shrine at the centre that probably sanctified an image of the goddess herself. ARCHITECTURE This is the only temple in Khajuraho built entirely out of granite, the indigenous stone, the others being built with a combination of granite and sandstone or latter exclusively. Another peculiarity that marks this temple is that this is the only temple facing north, unlike the others that traditionally face the East. Thirdly, unlike the other Yogini temples that have a circular plan, this is a quadrangular structure. HISTORY & INSCRIPTIONS It is believed that this Chausath Yogini Temple, was constructed in late 9th century, by Chandela Dynasty.
Veludharan — Google review
Built in the 9th century this one is considered as the most old temple of Khajuraho. It was probably built by some other rulers (not Chandel) unlike the other structures on the premises which are all built by Chandel as the description of this one isn't found in any inscription. Contrary to any other 64 yogini temple, the layout of this one is rectangular while all others are mostly circular (even the old parliament of India is believed to be inspired by the Chausath yogini temple of Moraina) It was a group of 67 small temples 64 of yogini’s and 3 of goddess Brahmini, Mahishasur Mardini and Maheshwari. But now only 35 such temples are erected and intact while none has any idol inside it. It's advisable to leave this temple and cover the rest of temples in the premises cause of its distance from the other groups and also the current condition of it.
Satyendra S — Google review
Chausath yogini temple is accepted as the earliest temple of Khajuraho. This temple is known as pre-chandella period temple. From the paleographical study of inscription it is probably dated to the last quarter of 9th century. The interesting part is that none of Chandella inscription mentions this temple. This temple is situated on a stone outcrop to the south-west of Siva-sagarlake. This temple originally had 67 cells in rectangular form measures 103ft./60ft.of which only thirty-five have now survived. This temple is completely made of local found granite stone. The base of the temple shows very crude mason work. This temple is very unique, mostly the yogini temples found in India are of circular shape but it is of rectangular shape. This temple is accepted as probably the oldest yogini temple of India. Three sandstone sculptures of Brahmani, Mahishasurmardani and Maheshwari have survived and are now displayed in Khajuraho museum.
PRITHWIJIT B — Google review
The Chausath yogini temple is located inside the main khajuraho temple complex and there is no separate entry ticket for this other than the main complex entry fee. One can either walk to the temple from the ticket counter or they can take the erick which charges 5 rs per person. Originally supposed to be 64, only a few remain. Unlike other yogini temples which are circular this one is rectangular. Dont miss if visiting the western group of temples.
Patricia — Google review
The Chausath-yogini temple, made of coarse granite, is the earliest building at Khajuraho and is situated on a low granite outcrop to the south-west of the Siva-sagar tank. The temple has an exceptional plan and design. Standing on a lofty (5.4m high) platform, it is an open-air quadrangular (31- 4m x 18.3m) structure of sixty-seven peripheral shrines, of which only thirty-five have now survived. The shrines are tiny plain cells, each entered by a small doorway and roofed by a curvilinear shikhara of an elementary form. The shrine in the back wall, facing the entrance, is the largest and perhaps constituted the main shrine. A few simple mouldings on the façade are all the decoration that the temple displays, but despite its uncouth appearance and rugged bareness, it possesses an elemental strength and reveals some basic traits of Khajuraho style, such as a lofty platform and a jangha (wall) divided into two registers. Of all the yogini temples in India, this is the most primitive in construction and unique in being quadrangular and not circular on plan. The three surviving images, representing Brahmani, Mahesvari and Hingalaja (Mahishamardini) are massive and squat in form and are among the oldest sculptures of Khajuraho. The latter two are inscribed as Mahesvari and Hingalaja. They have been moved to the Archaeological Museum nearby. The evidence of the sculptural and architectural style, coupled with the early palaeography of the short labels on the images, indicates that the temple is probably datable to the last quarter of the ninth century. (Information from ASI)

The oldest surviving temple of Khajuraho, the Chausath Yogini Temple is a 9th century monument. In contrast to the circular layout of all other Chausath Yogini Temples of the corresponding period across India, this temple has a rectangular layout. Unfortunately the temple is lacking in maintenance and importance, mainly as it comes under the shadow of the famous Khajuraho sets of Temples. Still a place worth visiting in Khajuraho.
Ashok D — Google review
This temple is believed to be the oldest amongst the temples in Khajuraho. No date has been ascribed to this monument in the legend before the temple, but is is believed to have been constructed when the Chandela Dynasty first came to power in the region. There were 67 rooms out of which only about 35 exist today, the rest are in ruins. Yogini temples are generally circular shape in India, but this one is rectangular in shape. So it is believed to be the oldest Yogini Temple in India. Statues of Brahmani, Mahishasura Mardini, and Maheshwari have been recovered from this ste and are now safely ensconced in the Architectural Museum in Khajuraho.

It is the the most old temple in Khajuraho group of monuments. It made by grenite stones. It has no carving, no design on it. It's architecture was simple. It is the temple of kul Devi. There are 64 small Temple shape sturctures that's why it knowns as "chaushath yogini temple" .

This is the only local temple dedicated to Surya and is situated about 91 m to the north of the Jagadambi temple and 183 m south-east of an ancient (Chandella) three storied stepped tank, known as the Chopra. In respect of plan, design, dimensions and decorative scheme this temple closely resembles the Jagadambi and consists of a sanctum without ambulatory, vestibule, maha-mandapa with lateral transepts and entrance-porch, the last being completely restored above the original plinth. The octagonal ceiling of its maha-mandapa marks an elaboration over the square plan and thus appears to be relatively more ornate and developed than Jagadambi and may consequently be slightly later in date. The main image enshrined in the sanctum represents an impressive sculpture of standing Surya driving in a chariot of seven horses. Three similar but smaller figures of Surya are depicted on the lintel of the ornate doorway. The temple walls are also carved with some of the finest figures of sura-sundaris, erotic couples and gods including an eleven-headed Vishnu. The sculptures on this temple. as on the Jagadambi, approximate those of the Visvanatha in style. The same affinity is visible with regard to the architectural and decorative motifs. The Jagdambi and the Chitragupta temples are, therefore, stylistically placed between the Visvanatha and the Kandariya and are assignable to circa 1000-25. (Information from ASI)

Chitragupta Temple (early 11th century) The Temple faces east and belong to western Group. This temple is dedicated to Surya and the only Sun temple at Khajuraho. The reason for calling as Chitragupta Temple is not known. The sanctum sanctorum, enshrines a 4' 10" high image of Surya, the Sun God. Though similar to the Devi Jagdambi Temple, it is more developed and more ornate. ARCHITECTURE The development of Chandella architecture can be seen as the ceiling has evolved from being a square to an elaborate octagon. Nothing original remains of the platform and almost the entire shikhara is a restored one. But the walls with its three rows of sculptures depict some unique images. The dashavatara Vishnu with his ten heads representing his ten Incarnations, the ashtavasus and the somber looking siddhi Vinayaka Ganesha are quite unique. Also, depiction of the trinity along with their Consorts, Brahma Saraswati, Shiva Parvati and Vishnu Lakshmi, are extremely interesting and few of the very well preserved images are on a much higher level. What is very noteworthy is that the divine couples frequently appear along the same vertical axis. HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS It is believed that this temple was constructed during the same period of Sri Viswanatha Temple of the western Group.

The Chitragupta Temple is a prominent part of the Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya and dates back to the 11th century, likely between 1000 and 1025 AD. Architectural style and layout The temple is similar in design to the nearby Jagadambi Temple. It follows the typical Nagara-style architecture found in Khajuraho temples, characterized by lofty terraces (jagati), functional plans, and ornate exteriors. The temple features a sanctum (garbhagriha) with a circumambulatory path (pradakshina-patha), a vestibule (antarala), a large hall (maha-mandapa) with transepts, and an entrance porch. The central hall boasts an ornate ceiling, considered one of its greatest draws. Significance The Chitragupta Temple is unique in Khajuraho as it is the only surviving shrine solely dedicated to Surya. It provides valuable insights into the religious beliefs and artistic practices of the Chandela dynasty that ruled the region between the 10th and 12th centuries. The intricate sculptures, particularly those depicting everyday life, offer glimpses into the social and cultural aspects of that period.

Located in the Western Group of Temple Complex in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, Varaha Temple is a captivating site featuring an impressive idol of Varaha, the boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Crafted from sandstone, the sculpture is adorned with intricate carvings and holds a unique feature - when observed from a specific angle, it resembles Goddess Saraswati.
The Varaha shrine, built on a lofty plinth, is essentially similar in design to the Lalguan Mahadeva Temple, but is simpler and more modest. It is an oblong pavilion with a pyramidal roof of receding tiers, resting on fourteen plain pillars and enshrines a colossal monolithic (2.6 m long and 1.7 high) image of Yajna Varaha (incarnation of Vishnu) which is exquisitely finished to a glossy lustre and is carved all over with multiple figures of gods and goddesses. The flat ceiling of the shrine is carved with a lotus flower of exquisite design in relief. The shrine built entirely of sandstone is assignable to circa 900-925. (Information from ASI)

Between its nostrils is the four armed Saraswati holding the Veena in one pair of hands. The highly polished monolithic image in yellow sandstone measures 2.5 m in length and 1.5 m in height. The ceiling of this temple is one of the finest with three rows of petals forming an elaborately carved inverted lotus. HISTORY AND INSCRIPRIONS Since this Varaha Shrine is just opposite to Lakshmana temple, believed to be constructed during the same period ie. Between 900-925 CE, by Lakshavarman of Chandela Dynasty. LEGENDS Facing the Lakshmana Temple, this temple depicts Vishnu in the form of Vishwa varaha, his third incarnation in which he took the form of a wild boar to rescue Mother Earth (Bhudevi) from beneath the ocean where she had been hidden by the demon, Hiranyaksha. The Varaha Temple at Khajuraho is a captivating site that highlights the unique blend of art, mythology, and spirituality found within the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. Located in the Western Group of Temples, this temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1986 due to its exceptional architectural beauty and its representation of the Chandela dynasty's cultural achievements. What makes the Varaha Temple stand out is the monumental image of Varaha, the boar avatar of Vishnu, enshrined within the temple. This colossal monolithic sculpture portrays Varaha in his purely animal form, a powerful symbol of the divine rescuing the earth from chaos. The detailing of the boar figure is nothing short of remarkable, reflecting the artistry and craftsmanship of the time. Every inch of the sculpture is adorned with intricate carvings, making it a masterpiece of ancient Indian art. The temple itself, though smaller in scale compared to other temples at Khajuraho, holds immense historical and spiritual significance. Its architectural style is simple yet elegant, perfectly complementing the grandeur of the Varaha image it houses. The surrounding complex further adds to the temple's charm, as it is part of the larger Khajuraho complex, known for its stunning carvings, serene atmosphere, and historical richness. The Shikhara this temple is pyramidal. Internally, this temple is square and rests on twelve pillars of granite. Sand and granite stones have been used in the construction of this temple. This complete temple is constructed on a small Jagati, a lattice has been constructed on the side wall of the temple. A four-faced Shivalinga has been established in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Since Brahma also has 4 faces, the temple is mistakenly called Brahma Temple. Originally this temple was dedicated to Vishnu as the idol of Vishnu is engraved on the lintel of this temple.
Veludharan — Google review
These temples are not merely monuments but symphonies in stone, where every surface breathes with life, emotion, and the divine artistry of the Chandela dynasty.”
Nilesh P — Google review
This temple with a simple plan and design and with the sikhara made of sandstone and the body of granite, occupies a fine position on the bank of the Khajuraho sagar or Ninora-tal. It is miscalled Brahma on account of a four-faced linga now enshrined in the sanctum, but must have originally been dedicated to Vishnu as shown by his figure carved centrally on the lintel of the sanctum-doorway. It is a modest structure, comprising a sanctum and a porch, the later now completely lost and the former roofed by a pyramidal sikhara of receding tiers of pidhas, crowned by a prominent bell-member. The sanctum is cruciform externally with projections on each side, and square internally, resting on twelve plain pilasters of granite. The projection on the east contains the entrance and that on the west is pierced with a smaller doorway, while the lateral projections on the remaining two sides contain plain latticed windows. Except for the bodly modelled figures of the Brahmanical Trinity on the lintel and Ganga and Yamuna at the base, its doorway is plain. Its jangha (wall) divided into two registers and standing on simple basement mouldings is also plain. Despite some difference in details this temple belongs to the same conception and early structural phase the Lalguan-Mahadeva with which it shares a common plan, design, ornaments and building material. It is consequently assignable to circa 900. (Information from ASI)

The temple is believed to be named after the Hindu Lord Brahma owing to the presence of a four-faced linga in the sanctum that represents the Creator of the World. However, historians are of the view that the temple was wrongly named, and it was actually dedicated to the Hindu Lord Vishnu. The reason for this belief is the presence of Vishnu's image on the lintel of the door of the sanctum. Adding to the marvellous architecture of the sanctum is a pyramid-shaped sikhara or apex. Constructed using sandstone and granite, the temple is beautiful and awe-inspiring.

We visited the shop this week during our trip to Khajuraho and were amazed by the: 1. The range of fabrics 2. The attentiveness 3. The eagerness to show and suggest -as per your requirements. 4. The very polite nature and patience of all the people in the shop. 5. The knowledge and the helping attitude of Mr. Rajrishi (Mr. Bobby), who went out of his way to suggest and plan for the places to visit. 6. And, the cherry on the cake - they get the garments stitched, (as per your size and design) within a few hours or at best the next day, and have it delivered to your hotel. Overall, a very satisfying, pleasant and a very very invigorating experience. Definitely, worth a visit and will sure recommend to anyone who would visit Khajuraho.

The store has a wide variety – from everyday wear to elegant sarees and unique home décor items – all at reasonable prices considering the quality. The staff was very courteous, knowledgeable about the weaves, and patiently helped me choose what I needed. What I loved most was the emphasis on promoting traditional artisans and sustainable fashion. Shopping here feels meaningful because it supports handloom weavers while bringing timeless elegance into your wardrobe and home.

Shramdaan is a captivating and distinct clothing store located in front of the eastern group of temples at Khajuraho. The establishment boasts an impressive interior design, while also offering live demonstrations by skilled weavers. With its reasonable prices, visitors can acquire high-quality garments that are handwoven with care. Notably, this shop is managed by a Not-for-Profit organization that generously supports local artisans.
This is located just outside the Jain Group of Temples in Khajuraho managed by 'Hathkargah' which aims to train the tribal population to learn the traditional art of weaving fabrics. Staff are courteous and helpful. There is also a trial room.

This is located just outside the Jain Group of Temples in Khajuraho. It houses both a space for exhibitions as well as a retail portion. Both are managed by 'Hathkargah' - which aims to train the tribal population in the State to learn the traditional art of weaving fabrics. The retail section is well arranged and the staff are courteous and helpful. There is also a trial room. However, I found the selection to be limited, and the merchandise to be expensive.

This restaurant, Zaheer Paratha & Lassi Corner, is renowned for its delicious and unique parathas. Unlike other high-end establishments, their parathas cannot be found elsewhere. Each paratha is enhanced with a special ingredient - love. When visiting Khajuraho, it is highly recommended to pay them a visit. In fact, they should consider expanding their business into a chain of restaurants dedicated to serving their exceptional parathas.
Here is the best paratha. Definitely go and try it. Also, great lassi. Lots of different lassi flavors and different parathas.

Great 30 types of Parathas and 12 types of Lassi. Very Affordable and one of the best delicacies in Khajuraho. This in Potato onion Paratha and Sweet Lassi ₹80 total. 5 Star from my side.

Do not judge this book by its cover ! The place is not fancy, doesn't offer too many types of dishes. Butttttt, it was one of the most yummiest parathas i have ever had. 😋❤️ This shop has varieties of parathas, diff kinds of lassi, pakoras and some common beverages. Our order 1. Aaloo pyaz paratha-yummy 2. Pyaz tamatar paratha- unique and crispy, must try! 3.Paneer pyaz paratha (takeaway ). My husband and myself had one paratha each, i loved the flavour so much that got another one for munching later on our drive. The ingredients for the stuffing were freshly chopped (onion, tomato, minced potatoes right after we ordered) also, there's something about the masala added in the stuffings- delicious! Lassi was good too. Do not miss this place while at khajuraho. The place was so crowded on Saturday night, and it was closed on Sunday, so went on Monday around 11 am. It wasn't crowded and we enjoyed every bit of it.

This place is beside the lake and it has a perfect view to watch while having your meal. I ordered special thali and the portion size was a bit smaller than the order places. I've got no complaints about the taste of the food as it was awesome. Pure veg restaurant i loved it ❤️
Kumarial S — Google review
The staff was nice, attentive but not hovering. A wide array of food on the menu. Very normally priced overall. We had a special Thali and 2 Aloo paratha's for ®220. The main room is up some stairs (no wheel chair access) and is glassed in. Roof top is shaded but open air and looks out over a stagnant 'lake'. Tasty enough food. I'd probably go back if I was in town longer.

It was one of the worst experiences faced. FOOD & service is also moderate. Even you have to order something if you use their glass or water. Even they use to talk like you didn't have any option once you got in... We were as tourist got treated this way... Please don't get fooled by infra n all #WORST EVER #UNPOLITE STAFF

Pathetic experience I ever had in Khajuraho. I have been through multiple restaurants and I found every restaurant great except this low grade restaurant. Food quality was bad and service experience was worst. They do not provide enough sabzi that you can't even eat 1 roti with it and if you ask for more they charge you. If you can't provide enough sabzi why do you offer 4 roti in one Thali? This was the only restaurant where I did not give any tip to staff!

Nestled in the heart of Khajuraho, Lala Ji Ki Rasoi is a delightful pure vegetarian restaurant that beautifully showcases the rich culture and art of Bundelkhand. With a cozy ambiance accommodating around 60 guests, this multi-cuisine eatery has quickly become a favorite among locals and travelers alike. The menu features an array of delectable dishes made from fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, ensuring every bite is packed with flavor.
We had the opportunity to try Bundelkhandi cuisine a couple of days ago, and we were delighted with the special thali we had ordered. They customised the meal for a vegan amongst us too. There were varieties of parathas and puris, along with side dishes, made with methi, palak, dal panchmel, baingan bhartha, kadhi (this was quite sour & salty), pickle & curd rice (this was pretty sour too). For dessert, there was a laddoo, made out of wheat flour. We also had mungodi, a deep fried snack made of moong dal, and it was served with a green chutney. It tasted good.

They use fresh ingredients and traditional recipes. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Try their Bundelkhand Thali & Lala ji special thali. It's all very good! And it's not expensive in a range of Rs. 300-400 per thali. If you're looking for a good vegetarian restaurant in Khajuraho, go to Lala Ji Ki Rasoi. You'll enjoy it!

Decent food at reasonable cost. Good location too. Although, khajuraho is not that big. This is still at a good location. Food is good too. We ordered paneer pasanda, roti, rice, garlic naan and aaloo Paratha. They also give enough salad. The service was good, but could be improved. The speed was a little slow, but again food is really good, especially the gravy in paneer pasanda. Th garlic naan was too soft and different from normal ones. But still I liked it. We didn't click photos but yes, bill is available.
