Andechs in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Andechs, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Andechs is best known for its hilltop Benedictine monastery, a centuries-old pilgrimage site overlooking the Ammersee with a richly decorated Baroque church. The monastery’s brewery produces well-regarded Bavarian beers, served alongside traditional food in its beer hall and garden. Visitors often combine a trip to Andechs with scenic walks through the surrounding countryside, including popular hiking trails from nearby Herrsching. The village’s rural setting and lake views offer a quieter alternative to larger Bavarian destinations.
With favorites like Kloster Andechs, Andechser Bräustüberl, and Kunst und Bier Skulpturenausstellung, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Andechser Bräustüberl so you can get the best taste of Andechs while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Andechs Monastery, also known as Kloster Andechs in German, is a hilltop Benedictine monastery and church that has been a center of pilgrimage for centuries. The monastery is renowned not only for its spiritual significance but also for its brewery, which produces some of the finest beer in Germany. Pilgrims flock to the monastery not just for prayer, but also to enjoy the famous beer served in the outdoor beer garden that can accommodate over 3,000 people.
An amazing place that blends Medieval atmosphere with traditional Bavarian feel. I deeply appreciated the chance to pay homage to the great composer Carl Orff. Unique brewery and wonderful food. Live music by highbrow Baverian orchestras. One of the ladies at the souvenir shop can be quite cranky though, if she needs to handle more than three. souvenir items at a time :)

A beautiful spot with rich history, stunning Baroque architecture, and amazing views. The on-site brewery offers traditional Bavarian beers, best enjoyed in the beer garden with authentic local food. The scenic hike from Herrsching adds to the experience. A perfect mix of culture, history, and relaxation

The reception staff behind the Wallfahrtskirche were very helpful. I was able to obtain some Klein Geld for the Wohnmobilstellplatz here. They could however not explain why the Chapel of Sorrows and Carl Orff shrine were locked shut! Said it never closes! At least 20 people were disappointed.

Its a whole experience even getting here, including an hour or so hike, but so very worth it. Our hike was beautiful, fall colors everywhere. The pilgrimage church is stunning, the scenery in the Bavarian hills is breathtaking, and the beer is some of the best we had in Germany. If you're staying in Munich or the surrounding area, you should go.
Tyler L — Google review
This place is known for its very drinkable beer and views over the surrounding countryside. I had a Schweinshaxe (crispy pork leg) and struggled to eat it with the potato salad and the red cabbage.
Bernhard K — Google review
Great place to have a quick look around and then enjoy beer and food whilst soaking up the amazing views. Easy to get too and well worth a visit.
Geordie A — Google review
Great beer and huge pretzels for the budget minded. Pork knuckles (Haxen) for the big appetite. The church is impressive. They also have virtual tours for enjoyment and historic viewd.
Wolfgang S — Google review
Easily accessible beautiful monastery with a beer hall, restaurant and open access to the brewery. Great place for pilgrims and beer lovers.

Sculpture
The "Kunst und Bier Skulpturenausstellung" is a project initiated by the Georg Zentgraf Foundation. Starting from 2017, Andechs Monastery has taken over the management of this project. The sculptures are displayed on Heiligen Berg for about three years before being sold, allowing approximately 1 million annual visitors to admire them. This exhibition is highly recommended and definitely worth a visit for art and beer enthusiasts alike.

Brewpub
Bavarian restaurant
Andechser Bräustüberl is a traditional tavern located in Andechs, Bavaria, Germany. This gaststätte offers a variety of delicious dishes including roasted pork, sausages, and homemade cakes following grandma's recipe. The tavern also boasts a beautiful garden where guests can enjoy their meals. One of the highlights of Andechser Bräustüberl is its monastery-brewed beer, which has been produced for nearly 150 years without interruption.
I arrived at 7:25 PM and was still able to order Schweinshaxn. The hall was lively with many customers enjoying their evening, even on a Thursday. The food was great, and the staff was very kind. Closing time was around 8:30 or 8:45 PM. It’s definitely worth a visit, though going before dark might be better to fully appreciate the historical surroundings.

The pork knuckle is huge. Seriously huge, like 3+ fist of mine. Nearly killed me. 9,5/10. It was crispy and crunchy. Brilliant. (We accidentally ordered a whole for me, without acknowledging its size.) The women put the cooked cabbage on a separate plate to not soak the pork. 👍❤️ My partner went deaf after overeating himself and he had to roll me down the hill back to the car. 10/10 we would repeat it. Not much warm food variety but they are good. There was a cold dish pult aswell with cottage cheese creams and fish aswell. The spezi is better in München, more orangy, more gradient colored. The steamed cabbage was splendid. The sweetened cumin cabbage is not my thing. I prefer it fermented, sour, pure. There was a waiter with a huge afro, he made me smile. He was constantly smiling. He seemed to enjoy his job and being there. Marvelous. Loved it. This huge hallway eating with 100++ people really impersonates everything, and there were many people eating. Barely free table inside. Outside almost no one. It was raining. But the guy's huge hair and constant smile really raised the mood. 10/10.

Great place to visit, get there early to get a table. On Sundays church services finishes about 11am so after that it starts to get busy. Prices are ok, but from November to March they do a winter beer only from keg! 🍺 Tours are available with AR headsets. The shop sells beer, glasses and bayerisch products. Parking and toilets are free of charge.

Always worth a visit, especially with bigger groups. My favourite beer and the pork belly/Wammerl is top notch. It would be much more amazing if they would provide a dark beer sauce with the meat dishes. Always disappointing without sauce. Selfservice!
M. H — Google review
Had a quick beer here, self service. Very busy indoors and had to sit outside, they are very prompt in clearing the table when finished which was appreciated. Delicious beer. They do accept card for food and drink orders which was appreciated.

Great biergarten if you've made the journey up to Andechs. For ordering food, you grab a tray and utensils and then tell the staff what you want. The menus are in both German and English. I had some sausages and potato salad and both were good. When you want a beer, you pay for it first at a counter by the glasses, then they give you a receipt which you give to the people pouring beers. The views from the biergarten are great. Nice rolling hills all around.
Brandon O — Google review
Great! 2 slices of pork, small pretzel, potato salad, and 2 sachets of mustard for just under 20 euros. Convivial and friendly.

Perfect place to stop during a cycling route They even have good deals for cyclists some days of the week Great atmosphere and view
