Nature & Parks
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, located in the historic town of Cass, WV, offers visitors a nostalgic journey back to the era of steam locomotives. The park provides unforgettable train rides through vast mountain wilderness areas with three destinations: Spruce, Bald Knob, and Whittaker Station. The park features a gift shop and is perfect for families looking for an educational and scenic experience.
I love this place. The train ride up the mountain has some amazing views. The museum is small but packed full of old pictures with descriptions and lots of pieces to look over. I could spend a day in there reading over everything... and the workers on the train and the fella in the museum were happy to answer questions we had. Overall its an awesome experience being there.

We stayed in one of the Company houses after riding the Cass Scenic RR. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. The Company store and Shay's restaurant made meals and souvenir shopping easy. The houses are in need of repair, but they still provided us with a good night's rest. Our house was 3 bed/1 bath and was way more space than we needed. The bathroom was very small. Wi-Fi was good. Would recommend for those seeking unique adventure.

Not a single employee at the station was friendly. Not one. Acted as if the tourists were interrupting their day. Locals acted the same. Have never been in an environment and had such attitude. As much as it cost one would think they would have at least been nice. All folks on the train working were wonderful. Lunch stop was very cool. People in Durbin were nice.

Step back in time with Cass Scenic Railroad. The town of Cass is much like it was when it began. The trains are impeccable relics of their time. They will take you from the period station to one of the highest points in West Virginia, only accessible by the rail. Breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience...it's extremely popular, do you and your family a favor, make reservations for the summit ride, they occasionally book full. Btw- great food in the Depot restaurant.

An absolutely wonderful steam engine experience combined with Fall foliage – The perfect mixture of an exciting adventure and yet so relaxing at the same time. We met some absolutely lovely fellow passengers on this trip we’ll definitely keep in touch with. The staff were really helpful and good at what they did. . We were really impressed by the drivers/engineers/coalmen professionalism and the sense of enjoyment they brought to the day. Do go and see for yourselves!

We took 2 scenic excursions this week. The ticket staff person was friendly and answered my questions easily. The Bald Knob train was interesting, with beautiful views. It is difficult to hear the announcements on the train, the open air cars are noisy. Definitely expect soot and smoke on your clothes and in your hair! The Greenbrier Express was anticlimactic but a peaceful ride. The hostess' commentary was interesting and could be heard fairly well throughout our car. I recommend these excursions (especially the Bald Knob one) to anyone interested in steam trains, or just a pleasant afternoon.

Our family had a wonderful day trip to the Cass Scenic Railroad. We opted for the four and a half hour trip to the top of Bald Knob mountain and back, and we were not disappointed with the beautiful views! The steam locomotives are truly an amazing relic from the past, and riding on one is a privilege you truly must experience firsthand to appreciate fully! To think of how many times these locomotives have transported hundreds of loggers and all of the logging products through the century up and down these same unforgiving mountains gives you a unique perspective for sure. Be sure to give yourself some extra time to check out the Cass Museum as they have some excellent railroad items as well some clothing from the period. The staff running the train did an amazing job with courteous and professional service. Many of the staff are career workers and their knowledge and skills are a treasure trove of historical facts. These guys were fun to watch work! For your trip planning, be sure to take extra clothes for warmth and protection and perhaps an umbrella or two. The cars, although covered, are open-air (no windows or doors). You WILL occasionally get engulfed with black smoke and soot (sometimes with small pieces of carbon still a bit hot) from the engine when the wind does not cooperate, and you will get a bit dusty/dirty (all part of a very cool and authentic experience). The closer you are to the front of the train, the more you'll have to deal with the smoke, soot, and loud steam vents and whistle (children may need ear protection), but the more you get to watch a real steamer in action. The seats are merely wood, so bring a cushion as it is a long ride. I HIGHLY recommend this experience for anyone that is in decent physical shape (you will have to go up and down steep steps to board and disembark at each stop). Do not expect luxury - that's not what this trip brings. It's a genuine, old-fashioned train ride from another time. 🚂🛤🚞

This was really enjoyable. A bit long, but my husband and I were together so no problem. The only thing I saw was a lot of elderly having difficulty transitioning in the next town. It's not very sufficient if you have a disability. But my husband was like a kid in a candy shop. He loved the sound of the steam engine and horn.

This town is really cool! Make sure you take the time to tour around what is now a cabin/resort town, that used to be a logging town. They have restored 23 of the original buildings and now use them as cabins you can rent! Absolutely make sure you take a tour of the historical theater and watch the video of the towns history, it is super cool!

We had a great time on the steam train ride to Bald Knob! You don't get to see a working steam engine very often. My nephew absolutely loved the whistle!

Nestled in the charming town of Cass, Shays Restaurant is a delightful gem that captures the essence of home-cooked comfort food. This inviting eatery offers a warm atmosphere where you can savor classic dishes alongside some of the county's finest hand-dipped ice cream. With an array of flavors ranging from timeless chocolate and vanilla to local favorites like butter pecan and blackberry, choosing just one might be quite the challenge!
GREAT BREAKFAST!!! Theses wonderful people were so nice and patient even when getting so many other backpackers and campers at the same time! GREAT FOOD!

This is a very quaint place to eat while staying in Cass, passing through or just after a lovely train ride. I dined with 3 others in my party and everyone was pleased with thier meals. Party number 1 and I ordered the Loaded BLT and found it tasty. The Loaded part was added cheese and a fried egg, such a nice combination. This came with potato chips and a drink for 9.95. I found it reasonable for a tourist town but would have been better with fries and a pickle on the side. Party 3 ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce (16.95) with 2 sides and garlic toast, she raved about it all. Party 4 ordered the 2 pork chops (18.95) with 2 sides. Both 3 and 4 rated their meals an 8.25 out if 10. The price may seem high but the servings were generous. I gave mine an 8 because the mayonnaise ratio was perfect and the added egg was a treat. Dessert was ordered which consisted of chocolate cream pie and Cinnamon roll (3.50 each). Both were tasty. Cake was advertised on the menu but our server said there was none. Food came fast but it was late day and not busy. Please don't expect gourmet food, but pleasant service and lovely comfort food. Family friendly and make sure to visit the company store next door.

Got Bacon cheeseburger and side salad. I came right after Green Bank Observatory hike for 1.5 hrs so pretty tired and exhausted, and their salad was amazing. Burger also cooked really well, nice service. No A/C was a bit of a bummer but nice airflow cooled me down after couple of minutes.

Perfect way to end the train ride. Very clean. Great service. Delicious ice cream. We had the bacon cheeseburger and hotdog, drinks, and sides for $16 and change. Check out the store and museum after you meal. Fun place!

What a fabulous restaurant. The service was professional and prompt. I don’t remember the last time that I had a full conversation with my husband without any interruptions from anything or anyone. The food was scrumptious. I absolutely will be coming here every time we are in town.
