Castle
Historical landmark
Perched on a hilltop, Castell de Santa Bàrbara is a 9th-century Muslim castle offering guided tours and housing a history museum. The journey to the castle takes you through the charming streets of El Barrio Santa Cruz, an old neighborhood with colorful Mediterranean tiles and potted flowers. The castle's dramatic position overlooks Alicante, where it has played a significant role in the city's history since its founding.
Visiting the Castle of Santa Barbara was a highlight of my trip to Alicante. Perched on a hilltop, the views of the city and coastline are absolutely breathtaking, providing a perfect backdrop for stunning photos. The castle itself is rich in history, with well-preserved structures and informative displays that give insight into its past. Exploring the various towers and ramparts was a fascinating experience, and you can really feel the weight of the history as you walk through the ancient walls. There are some shaded areas near the trees, offering a peaceful spot to relax after wandering through the fortifications. I recommend going early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy a quieter experience. The entrance fee is reasonable, and there’s plenty of space to explore. Overall, the Castle of Santa Barbara is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and architecture, and it offers a unique perspective of Alicante from above.

We came "early"around 11 o clock and we were standing on the quay more than an hour on the bloody sun. No any shades infront of the elevator. The view from the castle is amazing. The road is really slippy you should wear a comfy shoes. There is a note who has a peacemaker there have to be aware!!! The road down was long, because the elevator it wasn't working. The elevator ticket price is 2,80€/person

This was a very enjoyable visit to the Castell de Santa Bàrbera. You enter the castle via a long tunnel before reaching a lift that takes you up to the summit of the mountain where the castle is located. The views are amazing and you enjoy a bird's-eye view of Alicante and the sea. There are various levels and it is all very walkable. However if you have walking difficulties or wheelchairbound then it could be a challenge to reach parts of the castle. There is a lovely gift shop to buy a momento of your visit. This is also a fantastic photography moment to be enjoyed.

Visiting Santa Bárbara Castle was an incredible experience! The moment I reached the top, the view took my breath away, a perfect panorama of the sea, city, and mountains all in one frame. The castle itself is beautifully preserved, with a rich sense of history in every corner. I loved walking through the old stone paths, exploring the towers, and just taking in the peaceful atmosphere. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause and appreciate where you are. Whether you’re interested in history, photography, or just want to enjoy a stunning sunset, Santa Bárbara Castle is absolutely worth visiting. I left feeling amazed and grateful for the experience.
Samiul A — Google review
The views of Alicante from Castillo de Santa Bárbara are absolutely stunning, especially at sunset. It’s the perfect spot to watch the city and coastline turn gold as the sun goes down. It’s very peaceful and romantic, making it a great place to unwind and take in the beauty of Alicante from above. There are also tables and hiking trails, so you can have fun climbing up through the city and then sit down and enjoy a meal in a quiet, cool spot.
Abedi G — Google review
Must do when visiting Alicante. If you’re not walking up Mount Benacantil, it only costs you 2.70 EUR pp to go up by elevator. Santa Barbera offers you tons of lovely views, from every corner of the castle. Absolutely amazing. There’s a couple of little musea inside, some bars and a gift shop. I’ll def visit again and stay for a longer period of time.
Stef N — Google review
Easy to hike to and I recommend to do that to see the fantastic views. The castle is free and no ticket needed. Plan to start your trip at around 16/16:30 so that you won’t miss the golden hour for the sunset
Yixin M — Google review
If you’re visiting Alicante, don’t miss the chance to explore this stunning historical castle perched high on the mountain. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking — you can take in the entire city skyline along with sweeping views of the coast. It’s the perfect mix of history and scenery. Getting there is easy: you can either take the convenient lift from the city side or enjoy a 15-minute walk up the hill if you’re feeling active. Once at the top, there’s a charming little spot to grab a drink and relax while soaking up the view. Whether you’re a history lover, a photography enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful place to unwind, this castle is well worth the visit. Don’t miss it!

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Ascensor del Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante is a fantastic way to reach the historic fortress without the strenuous climb. This smooth and quick elevator ride transports visitors directly to the summit of Mount Benacantil, where they are greeted with stunning panoramic views of Alicante's cityscape, coastline, and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea. The experience is not only scenic but also budget-friendly, as accessing both the castle and elevator is free.
A great trip to the top of the castle, with the most amazing views. Cafe and toilets. You may have to queue for the lift up to castle, but it’s well worth the wait. Price for entry was €2.70 ish, but we got in free as ‘seniors’!! There seemed to be less queues to go down in the lift at the Castle level, as I think most people took a toilet break (level 2) so queues were longer there.
Sheila W — Google review
Absolutely brilliant place to spend a couple of hours. It's free to access but if you want to use the lift it cost €2.70 (can only pay by card). A few refreshment areas within the castle selling drinks and ice cream. Well worth a visit!
James H — Google review
You have the option to go up the castle via the side walk (not very hard but neither easy) or take the lift (you need a ticket). If you go up via the park you can go down without the need to buying a ticket - pretty convenient. The lift is the best option for a hot or rainy day, or with limited mobility.
David K — Google review
When visiting Alicante, it is essential to set aside half a day to explore this castle, and all its history, which is rich and varied. You will have the opportunity for an incredibly beautiful view of the city and the sea. We recommend from the bottom of our hearts.
Bogdan L — Google review
The elevator up to Castille de Santa Barbara is access from the beach side. Cross the road towards the castle and you will see the entrance. The cost of the elevator is only a few euros per person well worth the spend. Take the elevator up, then do yourself a favor, and walk down through the tiny Pueblo (village) Barrio de Santa Cruz.
Sean R — Google review
Fantastic views across the city of Alicante. Get there just before sunset to watch it setting in the West. We visited for a Wine tasting session in the evening, very popular so need to book well in advance.
Cliff B — Google review
The view is nice. There’s an elevator from the beach side — the ride costs €2.70.

History Museums
The Archaeological Museum of Alicante, housed in the old San Juan de Dios Hospital, is a cultural gem showcasing over 80,000 artifacts that vividly depict the diverse civilizations that have influenced the region. The museum offers a blend of permanent and temporary exhibitions focusing on field, urban, and underwater archaeology. What sets this museum apart is its modern approach to presenting archaeological findings using cutting-edge technology. It's not just about traditional showcases; there are interactive activities and videos explaining archaeological methods.
Absolutely amazing medium sized museum, with lot of interactive screens and a lot of prehistoric and Iberic and Roman period of the region. The only fault is that half of the museum explanations isn't translated in English.
Jelena P — Google review
Although we have been here many times we try to visit whenever they have a special exhibition on. These vary through the year and are exceptional. The permanent exhibits are great too so if its a girstbtime or a second visit I would highly recommend it.
Mark H — Google review
Very well organized museum, the permanent area is showing the old Hispanic and Mediterranean history, plus a multitude of objects found around Alicante. Interesting and a good stop to enjoy.
David K — Google review
It is well organised and informative place. Staff very friendly and helpful. Tickets are not expensive. Few minus was English was lacking in some areas especialy where you could press on screens. Several areas were made accessible to the blind people, but again this was only in a few places not throughout the museum which it would great idea to keep for those people. There is nice coffee shop with seats. So if you don't like visit museum you can enjoy cup of coffee or fresh orange juice in a shade under big autralians huge trees. Solution for everyone

We had a wonderful visit to MARQ in Alicante yesterday. The building is beautiful, and the park in front is lovely. We attended a candlelight concert and truly enjoyed every moment – such a magical experience!
Michaela V — Google review
The full size dioramas of archeological digs on land and sea were impressive. The normal side of the museum was well laid out and had interesting exhibits. The interactive displays had text in different languages, including English. The ticket office wasn't in the most obvious place and the signs were misleading. It is the building on the right and the automatic door entrance is round the corner, not visible from the main gate.
Alan H — Google review
Yet another visit to this incredible museum which has won awards for its forward thinking and versatile exhibitions. This time we went in March 2025 and the exhibition including information about Hannibal crossing the Alps. Fascinating to see the coins of 218 BC one showing an elephant! This museum never disappoints. What an incredible experience today as the Terracotta Warriors exhibition draws to an end. The staff were helpful and couldn’t have been more friendly. A striking and memorable day.
M J — Google review
The expositions are interesting and the entry fee is very affordable. What I was missing is a description in English at the exhibit - it is Spanish and French. In theory one can try to use the web page but this is neither practical nor fast or convenient. If you can accept that you mostly see the exhibits for the deer of like 4-5 Euro per adult then it is worth seeing if you have time free in Alicante.

BARQ Restaurante is a charming cafeteria located in the same premises as the Alicante MARQ Archaeological Museum. It offers a variety of homemade food, tapas, rice dishes, pastries, and 100% premium Colombian coffee. The restaurant provides a lovely outdoor seating area where visitors can enjoy delicious food and drinks. The staff is known for their exceptional service and friendliness, creating a pleasant atmosphere for guests to relax before or after visiting the museum.
We had a coffee and light bite to eat here on the terrace before our museum visit. The waitress was very kind in helping us with the menu. The coffee was truly excellent. A lovely shady spot under the trees too.
Adrian T — Google review
We went to this place during midday The inside is ventilated, and well lit The bathrooms are for one person only, but I did not have any issues and they even had baby changing tables and special amenities for hindered people The food was great and arrived in around 15-20 minutes before ordering, although the menu would need a tiny bit more drinks i.e water/soda beverages, and the cheese they used for the burger wasn't very fresh I would recommend this, as the prices are reasonable for one or two visits as a tourist
Toaster K — Google review
The terrace is nice, just near museum. Food lower then average, not fair for the price. We had potatoes with meat - very tiny meat; grilled vegetables were OK, the grilled squid very oily. Not to come back.
Apostol S — Google review
The service was horrible, we arrived at 15 and the waitress came up to us 20 minutes later, after she already worked on 3 tables that came after us. I don’t know if that happened because we were the only Germans in the restaurant and she doesn’t like Germans or foreigners in general, but that’s not okay in my opinion. The coffee and the beer was really good.
T Y — Google review
The restaurant is on the site of the museum. Being on a Saturday the restaruant was very busy. A lot of dirty tables and staff were a bit overwhelmed so service was a bit slow. The food were not bad but the issue was the beef burger that I ordered - it was pink in the middle, which suggested that the beef patty was undercooked and raw. I'm not sure if in Spain this was acceptable but in the UK it was against food safety. I told the waiter but he didn't even apologise. He took it back to the kitchen so that chef could cook it more. Please don't expect fancy food and excellent service from this restaurant. It is just handy if you visit the museum.
Kevin M — Google review
I highly do not recommend this place! Ordered half a plate of appetizers and a couple of drinks. Drinks were brought immediately, while snacks were carried for a very long time. We finished our beer. during the calculation, it turned out that we were punched a full plate of snacks, although in appearance it was clearly not a full plate.
Elena O — Google review
Great food and very fast service.
Claudia S — Google review
The place is nice outside, but service is just a disaster! The waiter does not care about cleaning your table or bringing you the menu. That could be because of the lack of staff (I've spotted two waiters only), but it is definitely not guests' problem. They could have brought a snack as a compliment, but we were unlucky so we had to finish a bottle waiting for the menu. Maybe other time.

The best coffee flavor I’ve ever had! I had an iced latte with almond milk every single day — it was that good. Their pastries and cookies are amazing too. My favorite was the peanut butter croissant, but they also have ones with pistachio and chocolate. All of them taste like real homemade treats. It’s the perfect spot to grab a coffee and a sweet snack to take with you to the beach I will miss them❤️☕️

Blue loop is the best coffee you can find on the front line. The food is also brilliant. It reminds you of your favourite coffee shop that you miss when you’re in a new place. It’s like home :) I go every day and it’s especially nice to pick up some stuffed dates (seriously you have to try them) after a run. Friendly staff and a great vibe. They seem to have a loyalty card system if you’re staying a while!
Rachel W — Google review
Really good coffee with beans from Colombia and lovely vanilla notes! Edited after coming back: I ordered a fruit smoothie after seeing another guest get one, and it looked great. Instead of a full cup, I was given a thick smoothie that was only about 3/4 full. When I asked for it to be filled properly, the woman gave me attitude. A smoothie should be served full and with the flavor as it’s meant to be—not short and dismissive service. No place to sit down, purely take away

Restaurant La Ereta offers a unique dining experience with its creative Mediterranean cuisine and breathtaking city views. Located in the Parque de la Ereta near the impressive Alicante castle, this establishment provides a daily changing menu featuring Spanish and Mediterranean dishes. The tasting menu, complemented by expert wine pairings, promises an exceptional culinary journey. While the portions may not be large, the exquisite presentation and flavors make for an unforgettable fine dining experience.
We booked in for a 2.30 lunch, absolutely amazing restaurant, brilliant staff, food is perfect. One of the best places I’ve eaten in . great view over the city. 👌🏼

!!!This is a review regarding the New Years Eve party at La Ereta and not their usual dining experience!!! We chose La Ereta for our New Year's Eve dinner, hoping for a memorable end to the year. The restaurant certainly boasts a great reputation, and while the dishes we were served tasted wonderful, incorporating great ingredients, they didn't quite meet the level of creativity and flair we expected from such a renowned establishment. Service during the evening was a bit of a letdown. It seemed disorganized at times, and the staff often appeared unsure about the details of the dishes they were serving. We had to wait for them to check back with the kitchen multiple times, which disrupted the flow of our dining experience. Moreover, witnessing the head waiter reprimanding the staff multiple times within view and earshot of the diners was quite uncomfortable and seemed unprofessional. The ambiance after dinner didn't quite lend itself to the festive, celebratory mood typically associated with New Year's Eve. There wasn't much in the way of music or space conducive to dancing and socializing, though to be fair, we weren't expecting a lively party scene. Overall, while La Ereta offers tasty cuisine, the overall experience fell short of what one might hope for on such a special night. Based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend the restaurant for celebrating major events like New Year's Eve, though it might be suitable for a regular dining outing.
Marcel R — Google review
A lovely lunch. First and foremost, the view itself is worth the hike up to this restaurant, Alicante and the sea lay at your feet. The menu choice is either a 7 or 10 course menu. We chose the 7 course for 85 euros and weren't disappointed. The amuse bouche were inventive. A lot of thought and creativity went into the dishes. Several were very well executed. Only one was not to our liking, but overall, it was a very enjoyable lunch. The staff were friendly, which added to the experience. Next time, we might consider taking the wine pairing to add to the experience.
Charlie H — Google review
The food was absolutely excellent – a real journey through flavors. Each dish offered a unique taste experience and the degustation menu felt like a carefully crafted adventure. You can choose between a 7-course or 10-course menu, each accompanied by a thoughtfully paired wine selection. I truly appreciate the artistry and hard work of the kitchen team. They even prepared us a delicious vegetarian menu, which showed their great skill and attention to detail. It’s best to indicate all allergies and dietary needs in advance, since the preparation is so elaborate and adapting spontaneously can be difficult - yet they still managed to create something outstanding for us. While the culinary side was outstanding, the restaurant itself could benefit from some improvements. Our seating area on the terrace had some litter nearby, the toilets weren’t as clean as expected, and a bit of dust here and there distracted from the otherwise wonderful atmosphere. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone seeking a great immersion into fine dining. With a little more attention to cleanliness, the entire experience could easily reach perfection. Thank you for the unforgettable flavors!

Lucy — Google review
I went to La Ereta yesterday with my family. The restaurant has a beautiful view of Alicante. I am under 18 so I could not drink the wine pairing. La Ereta had almost no non alcoholic options, all they had was apple, orange and pineapple juice. And two types of sodas. I tried one of these juices and found them very disappointing. The food was not much better. Most of the dishes were just downright boring and was not to our tasting. The meat main course tasted good but was cold when we got it. The deserts however were very good. The waiters were very nice but it seemed like they did not know the menu and had problems when presenting the dishes. There was a large group seated inside and it felt like we were not prioritized when it came to the staffs and service. The bathrooms were on the other side of the restaurant from this large group so we had to squeeze our way past the staffs and other guests to get there. The bathrooms were also not exceptionally clean. Overall it was a disappointing experience and we expected a lot more from La Ereta. Based on my own experience, I would not recommend anyone else to eat here.

I visited Xiringuito Postiguet for a late breakfast since it was conveniently located near the beach. The staff members were extremely friendly and spoke fluent English, which is beneficial for non-Spanish speakers. The food was satisfactory, although some might find it slightly sweet, depending on personal preference. While I would typically rate this establishment a 4 out of 5, I am inclined to give it a higher rating of 5 due to the exceptional friendliness of the staff.
I was walking along the beach and heard the music....turns out it was a DJ spinning lovely deep house. I decided to have a pit stop, which ended up being 3! Beautiful Mahou IPA, served in ice buckets. The view, the vibe and the laid back service was perfect. I'll be back later!

In first place, I want to talk about the Dj. He was so focused in his job, I really enjoyed his music. Bravo👏🏼! Maybe a little bit too loud, what if you like good music, bass, and your drink/foods is perfect! Service: the young guy , was very helpful, and friendly!😊 Food; not big options for try but perfect also for a small dish if you are around. Was delicious 😋🐟🍤🍟 Sooo, I recommend to try :)👌🏼

Right on the beach, with your feet in the sand and you have drinks and snacks right here. It’s also at a very good price considering the location and what it would cost you in most other countries in Europe at the beach!… Staff Team was friendly enough and service was fast enough. Of course you should manage your expectations because you are not sitting in a five star, expensive, white gloves service environment, but this place is exactly what you should expect from a Chiringuito at a Spanish beach. Enjoyable in the afternoon sun.

We came here for a late breakfast as it was the closest thing to the beach. The staff was really friendly and spoke great English, which is always a big plus for those who don't speak Spanish. The food was decent, though a bit sweet but that's up to preference. Normally I would rate this a 4, but I'll bump it up to a 5 due to the super friendly staff.

Very nice beach bar where to eat and drink something. DJ set creating the right atmosphere to chill out. Cocktails are slightly expensive for Alicante, but the quality is good and location top. I recommend the club sandwich while the bocata n1 should have more prawns.
