The Aragonese Castle of Otranto, dating back to the 15th century, is a massive fortress with chambers, halls, and tunnels that visitors can explore. Situated by the sea in the picturesque seaside town of Otranto on the southeast coast of the Salento Peninsula, this castle offers panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea. Its Renaissance military architecture features a pentagonal plan and powerful bastions.
Very cool castle. You have to pay to see the exhibit and to see the inside, touring the grounds is free.

Off season with no exhibition was a steal @€3 Great view point and information displays inside. We entered on the morning session and was pleasantly surprised at the small numbers and big opportunities for images.
Jonn S — Google review
Visiting the Aragonese Castle in Otranto was a wonderful experience. The art exhibition was truly fascinating – the painter drew inspiration from the prehistoric cave paintings of the Otranto area, and the works beautifully reflected that ancient spirit. There was also a captivating display of objects from the local caves, dating from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic period. A perfect blend of history, art, and culture in an impressive setting.
Iuliana D — Google review
It was a dull, rainy day with no sunshine until we stumbled upon the Aragonese Castle of Otranto. From the castle, we enjoyed scenic views of yachts and the shimmering sea. Inside, the lively atmosphere was filled with seafood restaurants, souvenir shops, and beautiful trees. A perfect spot for a half-day excursion. There’s a large public car park about a 10-minute walk away, with meters operating even on public holidays.
Petite C — Google review
The castle was beautiful but sadly it wasn't kept clean. There were bird feathers and papers on the floor. The dust on the artworks was sad to see.
Donna M — Google review
I haven't visited it inside, but from the outside it looks impressive and beautiful.
Kat K — Google review
The castel of otranto and walls inclose the old city which dates from the 1500,s is a wonderful imposing structure which has many walk ways and view points to see, inside you can visit the turrets, and theres many rooms with artworks, the view fron the very top is amazing which you can see otranto fully, not very busy so is relaxing, the old town has many shops, bars and has a turkish eastern europiean feel to it, with narrow streets and cobble stone walkways. Plenty to like, and night life has many clubs and bars. Cost 12 euros to vist but children are free. Great exlerience.
Antonio F — Google review
The Aragonese Castle in Otranto was built during the Spain rule in late 15 c. It occupies a commanding position above the old town protecting the harbor entrance. It's a classic turret castle with a moat around it. Great views of the old town and entire bay from the tower

Cava di Bauxite

Scenic spot
Cava di Bauxite, also known as the Red Lake, is a captivating quarry lake located near Otranto in the Salento area of Puglia. The turquoise water of this emerald green lake is surrounded by striking red rocks and offers a magical and enchanting sight. While it's not suitable for swimming or extended visits, it's worth stopping by to take some extraordinary photos and enjoy a short hike with views of the unique red soil landscape.
Interesting, nice-looking spot to walk up to. Usually not too crowded. There's a lot of free space in the parking lot (500 m, 3€ fee). There is not much to do here (no infrastructure shops, etc., just nature, as you expect). Overall, it’s worth it to go there and admire the scene and rich colors of bauxite.
Mirosław D — Google review
Beautiful place, colours lived up to expectations! Lucky to see it when it was very quiet. Refreshments sold at entrance, very glad of the freshly squeezed orange juice and water after we arrived by bike. Unforgettable experience, would highly recommend 👌
Sara L — Google review
Cava di Bauxite offers spectacular, Martian-like views. There’s a car park conveniently located about a nine-minute walk from the main attraction, with a €4 entry fee. Be prepared for your shoes to end up looking like they’ve battled a giant wad of gum! It’s wise to bring an extra pair of shoes and a laundry bag for your muddy footwear.
Petite C — Google review
Interesting spot for cool pictures and a pleasant hike with a view. It’s usually not too crowded. The red soil makes it rather unique. A short hike down to the water and you feel part of wild nature with lots of frogs and different types of birds. Plenty of parking available. Can be part of an itinerary of spots on the east coast of Puglia to visit in one day.
AM — Google review
What a rip-off. Looks nothing like in the pictures. Non-existent signage. Parking costs 4 euros. Don’t waste your time. There are way more beautiful places to visit in Puglia.
Karina M — Google review
It's very pretty, yes. But, when you get there it is surrounded with signs and barriers saying Private Property and Keep Out. It couldn't be less welcoming. To see the lake you have to climb over or around the barriers. And yet this place is advertised everywhere as a yop tourist attraction. Very bizarre.
Caroline H — Google review
Arrived an hour before sunset. It was too late to see the colors. It was in September and parking was 4€. It’s badly indicated. Use satellite maps view to find paths to the place. You need to take perpendicular path around halfway between parking and sea. You can’t see the colors of the water if too close or after sunset. Plan to be there around noon or at least few hours before sunset.

We visited in Oct, fantastic place .. well worth seeing… lovely walking area.. the colours of the scape was out of this world

Otranto's marina, known as Porto di Otranto, is a well-known coastal town in the Salento region. Along with Gallipoli and Leuca, it stands out as one of the most famous seaside destinations. The historic city envelops the marina, allowing visitors to explore its ancient walls and meander through narrow streets that lead up to the impressive Castle. During summer, these charming alleys become bustling with tourists who flock to admire its beauty.
Otranto The coastal towns on the Adriatic in striking distance of Lecce are famed for their beauty, history and beaches and Otranto is right up there at the top of the list. The drive there is easier thanks to modern road connecting this coastal resort to the main north/south dual carriage way joing Bari in the north passing Brindisi and Lecce ultimately to san leuca at the most southerly point of Puglia and arguably Italy where two seas collide, the Adriatic and Ionian. You might wonder what all the fuss is about on your approach to town centre but whether driving or walking as you drop to sea level you are not disappointed. To the north the crescent bay rises to wonderful vantage points above the safe, sheltered sandy beach laid out in front of bars, cafes and restaurants. Fishing boats and the marina fill the southern side of the bay, nestled below what is a fairly extensive and interesting old town crammed full with the castle, of course, cathedral, of course, ramparts and winding narrow streets full of shops and cafes, in buildings from a long gone past. It’s a wonderful, bustling seaside resort, meriting it’s reputation as a must see location. The town centre beach is lovely and in summer it is one of several in Puglia that is truly accessible to all. There are wheelchair accessible paths on the beach and lifeguards are on hand to assist wheelchair users and individuals with other mobility or sensory issues to enjoy the beach and indeed the water, literally taking individuals out of their wheelchairs and in to the sea using specialist floatation devices. Within striking distance of Otranto you can easily reach well known towns, beaches with famous rock formations and rugged coastlines, Andria, the two sisters and the poesa hole in the rocks giving access to the water and other caves to explore. Should you visit Otranto? Of course you should if time allows, you will not be disappointed ✅ See my blog,,,, Puglia reviews ricensioni

Cathedral
Church
Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata is an 11th-century cathedral in Otranto, Italy, known for its unique blend of Romanesque, Byzantine, and early Christian architectural styles. The cathedral features a crypt containing the remains of martyrs and ornate floor mosaics that cover the entire interior. The highlight is a vast 12th-century mosaic depicting biblical scenes and mythological imagery, including a stunning tree of life balanced on the backs of two elephants.
Like every single cathedral, basilica and church I have visited in Italy, the Cathedral di Santa Maria in Otranto is fantastic. First consecrated in 1088. Highlights inside the Otranto Cathedral include the well preserved 12th Century (1164) mosaic floor/pavement, and the chapel of martyrs where you will find 3 large glass fronted panels showing the limbs and skull bones of 800 or so local Christians killed by invading Ottoman Turks in 1480....look very carefully at the middle panel....are those 6 bullet holes in the top of the skull of one poor individual? Or are they something else? May they all rest in peace. But please make sure you also visit the Cathedral Museum right next door. For a modest 5 euro entrance fee you can marvel at many of the cathedral's religious and artistic treasures ......including a gold thread decorated-silk 17th Century bishop's cloak, a exquisitely embroided 17th Century artisan's dress, silver altar adorations, 3D stone reliefs, and a full map/composite of the mosaic floor inside the cathedral. What a privilege. Grazie Otranto ......Stewart from New Zealand

Amazingly beautiful church. The mosaic floor is beautiful!! I recommend it to everyone!
Ferenc S — Google review
I’ve rarely been so intrigued by a cathedral! 🤯⛪ The massive mosaic floor is absolutely fascinating — and at times, even a bit funny. It really gives you a sense of how little people knew about the world back then… and it’s wild to think it was all created by a single monk. The chapel containing the bones of 813 martyrs is chilling yet strangely mesmerizing 💀🕯️ The large crypt, with its forest of columns, feels both impressive and peaceful 🏛️ A definite must-see in Otranto!
Thibaud — Google review
This sacred space is unique. Learn about the floor beforehand, and then you will know about it when you visit. It is a whole mosaic floor following ancient techniques. It is a miracle that it was not covered with a new floor in the s XVII.
David ( — Google review
This is an amazing fit of architecture and art. It also does not feel heavy, not putting you down.
Valery Z — Google review
The artwork on the floor is unique, I have never seen a mosaic so big and so well preserved. The only ones that I remember are inside of Venice’s San Pietro (but geometrical shapes) and inside of Constantinople’s Hagia Sophia (but not so well preserved). It is definitely a must if you visit Salento. So much underrated.
Decebal T — Google review
Here is a place where you can see how ages ago people learned of the Bible. The mosaics told the story of the tree of life and the division of Heaven and Hell. Having survived the conversion to a Mosque and back most of the frescoes were destroyed... butfor some reason they left the images of Mary... and a few of Christ on the cross.
János S — Google review
The Cattedrale di Otranto combines a Byzantine and Romanesque style. It was built by the Normans. Nearly 800 civilians and clerics were killed by the Turks who had besieged the town. Their bones are arranged inside the chapel. There are impressive frescoes and mosaics. In the basement, there is the crypt with plenty of columns with different styles of capitals and materials. A priest who met spoke Grico!

The seafood restaurant Retro Gusto, in Otranto Italy, serves meals of excellent quality at reasonable prices. The atmosphere is lively and the staff are eager to please. Special touches such as the use of Bialetti coffee cans to add flavor to dishes make this a very pleasant experience.

We glad to spend our time in this wonderful restaurant. We have great opportunity to taste exceptional flavors in elegant ambience!!!
Dan M — Google review
Hmm there are certainly other places in Otranto with a much more attractive setting (tables outside are on a fairly busy and unattractive road). The food was only OK. I did not get the Michelin-level wow factor. Style over substance comes to mind. Looked the part but the flavours just not there. I think on one dish they may have forgotten to bring salt and olive oil which was sorely needed! And service was pretty charmless. Overall underwhelmed and a wasted opportunity to try somewhere more authentic and atmospheric in lovely Otranto.
Sophie G — Google review
It’s a shame that this restaurant is recommended by Michelin. Expensive dishes with no flavor at all. We ordered a shrimp pasta that tasted like seawater, and the shrimp were tiny. A completely tasteless meat dish. All four dishes we ordered were bad. We really got pissed off. The only positive aspects were the wine and the service.
Clara L — Google review
Fantastic dinner. We had the full Italian dining experience: appetiser, primi, secondi, and dessert. The wine was fantastic; the pasta and fish courses were perfect and the tiramisu was the best we had in Italy.
Reuben A — Google review
Visited the Michelin recommended @retrogusto_otranto for lunch, and their house made pasta was amazing! I love how simple and beautiful the presentations are, and they tasted super flavorful and chewy. Really enjoyed the fish as well. Very fresh and well cooked!
Vicki — Google review
Beautiful food and professional service. Fresh seafood and beautiful presentation. The Antipasti menu is particularly interesting in my opinion - some dishes that were not seen in other restaurants. The seasoning for all dishes is perfect whilst keeping the freshness of seafood. Really delightful dining experience and we’d hope to return again during our stay in Otranto.

Great experience at Retrigusto Restaurant. The dishes were well presented, and the seafood was fresh and delicious. I particularly loved the dish of the day, pasta with dentice, and the seafood salad. Everything was complemented by a bottle of white wine. My friends ordered a risotto al nero di seppia, which was equally good. The restaurant is 200 meters away from a parking area and a 5-minute walk from the historical center of Otranto. Highly recommended!

Public beach
Spiaggia dei Gradoni is considered by many as the best beach in Otranto, known for its powdery white sand and clear, calm waters. It's conveniently located just a short walk from the town center and offers both free beach areas and a small lido for rentals. Families with kids will appreciate the shallow and tranquil waters, making it ideal for a day of relaxation or snorkeling. The beach also provides easy access to nearby cafes and restaurants.
This is a public beach that has these large steps that are great to just setup your towel and hang out for the day. Easy access to the Borderline Cafe which has great food and is always playing good music. This is a great beach for family with kids because the water is very clear, calm, and shallow. It is also a great place to go snorkeling. If you are standing on the beach and you look out towards the left you will see a line of rocks not too far out. It is really fun to snorkel around these rocks and see all of the fish just below the surface. The water is significantly deeper on the other side of the rocks but you can still see a lot of you only stay on the one side.
IndyKevin317 — Google review
Well, this was well worth the visit. My husband is gluten intolerant and 70% of the menu can be made gluten free. The food was tasty. Prices and service were super. Great bathrooms, clean and neat.
Sanna G — Google review
In reality, the beach does not appear to function as a free zone. Beginning as early as 7:30 a.m., a local company sets up umbrellas and sunbeds along the first and second rows, even though they remain unoccupied. Unlike the two neighboring beaches—which are clearly designated as paid areas—this stretch is presented as a “free zone,” though in practice it does not feel that way.
Kat K — Google review
Magnificent view😍 tranquil, calm and simply beautiful🔆 the water is sooooo clear and clean😊 plenty of good (and average) places to eat nearby. Public restrooms are available but not clean☹️ makes for a great family day out. If you’re visiting Lecce, this is only 45min ride on the bus so it’s definitely worth the visit👏🏻

Best inlet beach on the Lecce coast. Pure sandy bottom, beautiful blue lagoon. Entrance is pricy, though, via adjoining camping site at €15 a person including kids 2+. No foot access possible.
Sergio S — Google review
Quite “suspicious” that the only hotel that gets money for access has now wastewaters where used to be a stair that allowed free access to the beach, right? Leaking waste waters to the beach where everyone swims… doesn’t look quite good, right?
Filixlan H — Google review
The only way to get to the Baia Mulino d’Acqua is trough the hotel borgo Mulino d’Acqua and it costs 15€ per person. There is no other way to get there and you have to swim to actually see the grotta. It’s recommended to take shoes for the sea because there are a lot of stones. Also take your googles to see where to step. There is only a small beach left on one side of the grotta.
Irene A — Google review
YOU CANNOT REACH THIS PLACE BY CAR. The photos you see are from people who took boat tours or who visited before the paid access was closed last year. If you drive to this destination you will find locked gates and private property signs. I did manage to reach the sea from here, by walking back up the road and down the first dirt road through multiple olive groves and farm fields and bushes to reach the cliffs. Then from the cliffs you can see the bay but cannot get down to it. I walked further down the trail to a place where I was able to enter the water and it was nice, but there is no beach, the trail is hazardous, and requires going through thornbushes.
Alyssa S — Google review
Total rip off. It is no beach. It is a nice walk (not reachable by car). There used to be a walk way which is destroyed and not useable. The walls have collapsed - so there is no beach anymore and a lot of rubbish
Victoria Q — Google review
Amazing landscape but is not possible to access the bay from the top by foot. There is a private bath at the parking spot but you have to pay 15€ just for entering and descending, giving you a green bracelet from the bordering residence.
Serena — Google review
Very very nice beach, but it comes at a cost: 15 euros to give to the camping resort that you have to cross in order to get to the beach
Sebastian C — Google review
I highly recommend NOT to go there. The beach is a mess and definitely not worth 10€

Overall we had a nice experience: - 🍝🐙FOOD: the Polpo in pignata was delicious & the Tubetti cozze & pomodori. However the tagliatelle alla ricciola were very average and they lack of flavor. - 🍽 SERVICE: The staff was very friendly & kind of fast to serve, however we did not appreciate that they were so much in hurry to serve the tables that they transmitted to us the rush & the main waitress was not even wearing the mask properly (just having it below the chin allá neckbeard configuration). - 💶PRICE : We honestly found the prices too high for the quality of some of the dishes & the service. In bill included the coperto 3€/person and we did not even get the bread.

He recommended us his favorite wine which was a fantastic choice . The food was excellent. Overall it was a great experience to be looked after and not being considered as another tourist

We saw this place on Trip Advisor but I’m never too sure. Well, we got to the restaurant, extremely friendly and offering advice, and the food was perfect. Service brilliant .. and a side note, we asked for wine recommendations and we ‘trusted’ them. We had a wonderful glass of white with our starter, and a fantastic bottle of primitivo of their recommendation. There were 2 on the menu, and when we got the bill, it was the €25 bottle and not the €70 bottle! Note: they can’t take tips on credit card so bring cash - they deserve it!

A gem in the Otranto old town. Food was excellent, wine also was local and good. We had tuna tartare for starters, octopus and linguine with red shrimps. The waiter was beyond perfect, you could see, that he just loves what he is doing, even recommend us some exceptional local sightseeing places to visit, that we wouldn’t know by ourselves. 100% recommend!

"Il Cantico dei Cantici" is a charming restaurant located in the heart of the old town, making it a perfect spot for people-watching while enjoying a meal. The friendly and helpful staff provide excellent service throughout the day, ensuring that guests feel welcome and relaxed. The menu features delicious dishes such as orecchiette, octopus with potato, and robust gnocchi with tasty sauce.
No problems here. Frisa peasant starter. Excellent octopus with potato . Gnocci robust tasty sauce. Good humoured staff. Recommended.

Restaurant in the middle of the old town. Service all day. Friendly staff and a good price/service relation.

one of the best spots in town. the owner is truly one of the nicest, kindest people and her waiters are really friendly and helpful. the orecchiette were a trifle undercooked but overall, it was a good place to get lunch and people watch. i stayed for quite a while and they never rushed me off even though they could have used my table.

It maybe an unfair reflection, but I did feel they saw the tourist coming. The first dish I requested was not available, fish of the day was recommended which I went for. My husband ordered a primo and second plate, they did not tell us the fish of the day was for two. My husband had his secondi dish when the fish of the day arrived and got served onto two plates. It cost nearly 50 euros for the fish, by itself. Dearest meal we have had by far.
Eve H — Google review
Good food and decent service, but the portions are quite small for a price that is quite high. The fish in the fish of the day with pasta included two little pieces, a total of 4 bites.

Ordered the lobster pasta (25 euro) and shocked at how little meat there was! (And don’t get me wrong, I’ve eaten lobster a number of times before and I know there’s never lots of meat, but this was ridiculous with nothing even in the claw). I showed the waitress and she sent over the manager who raised her voice at me in italian. I don’t know what she was saying but she obviously did not care. She then walked away! My husband had the lasagne and a side salad which had seen better days. The only good thing? The pasta was al dente, but then again that’s a standard in Italy anyway. Lastly, poor hygiene with no soap in the toilet. Poor poor poor

Food is ok but the owner is really rude. She didn't like that we've ordered only first course (prime piatti) which usually is cheaper than the second course. And after being rude with was, a big group got in the restaurant and she brought us the check so she could have more space

Seafood restaurant
Classe 80 is a charming, high-end eatery that offers locally sourced fish and seafood. Situated in close proximity to the historic center, this popular restaurant attracts diners looking for an upscale dining experience without inflated prices. The cuisine is known for its freshness and creativity, with a variety of raw options available. Patrons can enjoy dishes such as tuna and baked whole fish, all of which are highly recommended.
We went for dinner with my wife and our two kids. We were greeted very warmly and seated outdoors. While it might not be the best view in Otranto—there’s no sea or historical sights—the setup is cozy and inviting, with a perfect selection of lighting. The knowledgeable waiter showed us the catch of the day and the fresh fish available. We started with mackerel served with banana mayonnaise, which was absolutely delicious. This was followed by lobster paccheri that was to die for, and we concluded with a salted caramel mousse with millefeuille and oats—simply outstanding. The prices were very reasonable, and I had the best dinner of my five days in Otranto here.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed a lovely dinner on the patio of Ristorante Classe 80, a charming fish restaurant. Luckily we came early enough so we could still get a table, because, as the evening progressed, the restaurant quickly filled up with customers. The service was very friendly and professional, although their English is limited. I really liked the fact that the waiter showed us the freshly caught fish, so we could pick whichever fish we liked. The food was excellent. After sharing some antipasti with my boyfriend I had octopus as a starter and lobster as a main course. I finished off my meal with al lovely pasticciotto.

Excellent freshly prepared fish dishes. We chose Carpaccio and Fish in Salt Crust with fresh vegetables from the 'Catch of the Day'. Everything was prepared with great love. Francesco and the service team are very sympathetic hosts. We will come back!

We had a very good time. The fish is very fresh, the dishes are creative and the quality is absolutely there for the modest price. Good service compared to the average Otranto’s offer. Definitely recommend.

Touring from Australia, looking for high quality, great tasting food was not disappointed. Service was also outstanding. The food was tremendous: the fish was fresh, great flavour, pasta cooked perfectly and the we tried some local wine which complimented the seafood. The tiramisu was also a highlight. Highly recommend!

Day 2

Off the beaten path
For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Baia dei Turchi. Not quite as popular as Aragonese Castle of Otranto, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

Baia dei Turchi is a hidden gem nestled within the stunning Oasis of Alimini Lakes in Puglia, Italy. This picturesque beach, known for its soft white sands and crystal-clear waters, offers a tranquil escape surrounded by lush pine forests. Although it requires a bit of effort to reach from designated parking areas, the reward is well worth it. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere while lounging on the beach or exploring secluded spots along the coastline.
Beautifully Sandy beach with nice water color. Excellent choice for a beach day in Puglia, because in Puglia you will find very few beaches with sand. This one is nice!

Super sandy beach on the Puglia coast with crystal clear waters. There is a walk into it, but you can avail of the shuttle and parking for €10. There is another carpark for €5 but without the shuttle. We actually walked out as there was a large crowd coming out at the time. Beautiful beach, with small cliffs to provide shade. Our kids loved it.

Crystal clear water with incredible fine white sand. We arrived around lunch time and still managed to find some space on the free beach. Bring sandwiches and water to avoid the constant queue at the only small bar. Plenty of parking with free shuttle near the beach, park in "Da Marco" €5.00 for the whole day 10 minutes walk from the beach. Bring time and peace, to relax, one of the most beautiful beaches in Puglia on the Adriatic coast.

Spiaggia Alimini is a stunning beach located near the Alimini Lakes in Puglia, Italy. The area is a natural reserve with two lakes surrounded by dense forests, making it a haven for migratory birds. The beach itself boasts over 5km of fine sand and clear waters with a mesmerizing green-blue hue. Visitors can rent canoes from the lake shores for a tranquil exploration or take leisurely walks amidst the dunes and pine trees.
Probably one of the best if not the best beach in the area. The waters are very clear and have that green/blue amazing colour. There are several beach bars in the area that you can get a sunbed and between it has space if you are using your own umbrellas. The food is brilliant with the usual italian quality. The only problem would be to find a parking space as it can get very busy and it has limited spaces.
Ioannis — Google review
Lovely beach, I imagine it’s really busy in the height of summer as there are a lot of umbrellas on the sand. If you aren’t renting one I think you have to sit in between the slips of each company. There are lifeguards but the water is shallow & warm in mid June. You can park for free in the forest behind, so all in all a lovely place to come, especially as most other places are rocky this beach has actual sand, a rarity in Italy.

Came here in October. Tourist season long over, the sun shining as beautifully as ever. This is one of the prettiest beaches I have seen in Europe. If at all possible, come here when the crowds are gone and explore. There are far more magical corners to be found if you are willing to take a walk...

Icon Restaurant Otranto, situated at the heart of the historical center near Otranto Castle, is widely renowned as one of the city's top dining establishments. The restaurant offers a popular tasting menu and an excellent value a la carte selection featuring upscale dishes crafted from local ingredients. Guests can expect exceptional service and a delightful culinary experience with well-composed plates bursting with carefully chosen flavors. The high-quality wine pairings further enhance the dining experience.
If you in Otranto, I highly recommend visiting Icon, if you reading reviews, you might think this doesn't look like maybe the most traditional Puglian restaurant - but I can't recommend this more, the most delicious meal i've had since being in Puglia, with beautiful ingredients and the perfect flavours. I had tried many seafood dishes during my stay, however this pasta with Burrata and tomatoes couldn't of been more perfect. Don't underestimate how delicious this dish is!
Lori M — Google review
It would be worth a trip to the beautiful Otranto just to have a meal at Icon! It was our best meal in Puglia, and it's a lot to say when you're eating in Salento. As soon as we got our Campari spritz, we knew we were in the right place. Turns out there's a Campari spritz -- and there's a Campari spritz! We had a plate of delicious grilled mixed vegetables (preceded by a gourmet amuse-bouche on the house) and a beautiful fish spaghettoni dish (everything as much a feast for the eyes as for the palate), but were treated so royally as if we ordered feast. The hospitality of our waiter, Mattia, was simply out of the ordinary; he literally made us feel like we were family (and I'm using the word literally in its proper sense here). Our only problem was that all this made us sad to leave -- but we'll be back in Salento in the spring, and the thought of having another meal with Matias on this gorgeous sunlit terrace is what makes life good.

Excellent restaurant! Icon is cozy, charming restaurant in an amazing location, just by the Castle of Otranto. The staff is friendly and helpful. We got there late in a rainy night when they were about to close, but the staff and the chef were happy to keep the place open for us. We were the only guests that night and the whole experience was incredible. The staff recommended a surprisingly good local spicy white wine, the starters and main dishes. The food was delicious. We strongly recommend!

I loved dining and relaxing at Icon! The food was amazing and the interior is tastefully decorated. The service is impeccable - Roberto and Roberta were so kind and friendly and they even made a birthday cocktail with a candle for my birthday! I ate here regularly during my stay in Otranto and was always welcomed with a smile and warm greeting. The restaurant is comfortable and I appreciated the air con after a day in the heat. There is also a balcony where you can eat while taking in the sights. The seared Tuna and Octopus tapas were my favourite dishes. Castello Aragonese is adjacent to Icon restaurant and it was bliss to sip on wine with such a fantastic backdrop. I will definitely be back when I return to Otranto. A presto! - Gina

Michelin-like experience here in Otranto. We enjoyed literally everything - the view, music, atmosphere, staff and especially food and their mind blowing wine list! Never miss it then in town. Fried fish was my top - reminds me childhood near the see. The place made our day - 12 of 10!!

Visited back in September 2023. Extremely whacky meal. Strange tasting menu. Ordered one vegetarian tasting menu, one pescetarian tasting menu. Of the 10 dishes, 2 were reasonable. Of the 5 in the veggie one, 2 were the same, which was confusing at best. Would advise not to visit, but got the feeling that was the fault of the owners and chefs, not the waiters who were doing their best. Plenty of good restaurants nearby.

This review is for the paid art exhibit in the tower. First, the tower has been beautifully restored. It wasn’t clear from signage that what you’re actually seeing is a temporary art exhibit. There wasn’t much to it and it’s very dark inside, so hard to read the limited interpretive material. For 5 euros per person, I was a bit disappointed.
M S — Google review
From the moment we entered, the employee at the reception was unfriendly, arrogant and showed a lot of attitude. Since I have already learned my lesson regarding tourist rip-offs in Puglia and since the employee only gave us a sheet o paper to read about the exhibition, with no photos whatsoever, I peeked into the main – and obviously only – exhibition room, simply to get an idea how big the exhibition is. It seemed to consist of only one room. My suspicion was later confirmed when reading other reviews. I then asked the employee if he could tell me what the exhibition is about and if there are photos of the works of art to be seen. He tried to find some facebook page about the artist. My rating is not about the exhibition which I obviously have not seen, but about the unprofessional and unfriendly Torre Matta »Museum«.

Historical landmark
Ipogeo di Torre Pinta is a unique circular underground structure with the shape of a cross, built by the Messapians in supple limestone. It has served various purposes over the millennia, from tomb to place of worship. The main tunnel and cave were constructed by the Messapians, while monks extended it during medieval times. Although its exact purpose remains unclear, it is believed to have been used as a pigeonry at one point.
A highly recommended place with sufficient free parking. To visit, you first have to ask for the key at the reception of the restaurant and accommodation house. The lady there is incredibly nice, and we chatted with her for a long time. Then she showed us the way. From the accommodation, you have to walk downhill for about five minutes until you reach the locked gate, which you can see in my photos, and which you open with the key. Then you walk through a tunnel... impressive - see photos. The tour only takes a few minutes, depending on how many photos you take. When we returned, we were offered coffee and cake... as I said, a highly recommended place.
Harald E — Google review
Small, but interesting place. You have to go to the restaurant and the lady gives you the key for some donation. It was worth to see.
Dora F — Google review
the place is suggestive, you can visit it for free but we found it appropriate to stop for lunch. the service was fast and they were very kind to me as I am a vegetarian and welcoming towards my dog, which however is not a given. the family who welcomed us is trying to revive an ancient place in Otranto located on their land, which their father/grandfather had discovered and a Milanese architect recognized nationally, at least this is what we understood from the stories and information on the web. after a short visit with a free offer we opted for a quick lunch and had to leave, but I will certainly be left with the memory of a place that deserves to be known by as many as possible
Daniele D — Google review
It is cool, but you must go through the B&B for the key and they make you pay. The lady is very nice, but ushered us into the restaurant and we felt obligated to get something small. We ended up paying 15 euros for the tunnel and a 2 bite cake, which was unexpected.

Lighthouse Punta Palascìa, also known as Faro di Punta Palascia, is a 19th-century lighthouse located at the easternmost point of the Italian peninsula. It can be reached by taking a scenic circular walk through orange and olive trees from Otranto. The trail offers stunning views of the sea and leads to the tiny cove of Porto Badisco.
Finally made it to the stunning Azzurro Coast! Visiting Cape Palascìa and the Faro di Punta Palascia, Italy's easternmost point, was a breathtaking experience. This iconic lighthouse is the first place in the country to welcome the sunrise each day, and witnessing it in person was truly magical. The beauty and tranquility of the surrounding landscape, combined with the significance of this location, made it an unforgettable visit. Saluti

A truly impressive and geographically fascinating landmark. What struck me the most was the “acoustic curtain”—a unique mix of pressing silence and the constant hum of the sea. Be prepared though: the access road is both long and consistently steep. Still, it’s absolutely worth walking all the way down to experience the full atmosphere.

The lighthouse inside is currently closed to visitors, but the view from here is beautiful. There is a military building here. There are no designated parking spaces, you have to be careful where you leave your car. A gravel path leads down to the lighthouse on foot. It is very windy in this area. In good weather you can see the Albanian coast.

At the easternmost point of Italy there is one of the five lighthouses protected by the European Union. It is the Lighthouse of Punta Palascia. It was designed in 1863 by the engineer Achille Rossi, when the Italian government drew up a program of lighthouses, which refused the ministerial model for lighthouses of the fourth order. It was abandoned in the 1970s, however, it has been reopening since 2008. They say that on New Year's a lot of people visit the area to see the first dawn of the year, because it appears there before the rest of the country. Nice view!

Long walk down, we went there to watch the sunrise, but unfortunately it was really cloudy. Great viewing point. Only negative point is that the mystery is kinda diluted by the military camp which you have to walk past. Also, no real parking places, you just have to park you car on the side of the road.

This fast food restaurant Friggitoria Otranto - Torrematta is a great place to go for a quick bite. Their fried courgette flowers, stuffed with ricotta, provola and basil, are the star of the show. And their pittule of course! Lovely place, everything is so tasty!
Stopped here for the fried calamari and shrimp (mixed) and the fried calamari, and 2 beers on a hot day! Paid €32 for everything which was pretty high but seems to be the going rate in this tourist-y area so we aren’t too bothered. It’s run by a friendly mother and daughter in a small kitchen and it wasn’t crowded at all. (I imagine in the summer months when there are more tourists, things could get a little slower / backed up in the kitchen as everything is made fresh) The fried seafood was excellent; the batter was crispy and light and didn’t feel greasy. The seafood was really fresh and delicious— a squeeze of lemon was all we needed. (I didn’t see any other sauces provided). Would definitely come back in the future!

Lido 2 Laghi is a beautiful beach with a small restaurant offering sandwiches and drinks, as well as a pizzeria nestled in the pine forest behind the beach. It's known for its good location and quick coffee options next to the public beach. While some find it a little expensive, many visitors consider it the best place to be, appreciating its picturesque setting and overall charm. However, there have been reports of dissatisfaction when paying by card at this establishment.

The Masseria Bandino hotel, situated in a building from the 1700s, was once a support for pastoralism. It has become the dream come true for owners Mimina and Roberto. Set amidst lush greenery, adjacent to a 5-hectare pine forest, this hotel offers views of the port of Otranto. In this rural atmosphere, there is a cuisine that blends local flavors with creativity and imagination.
This is really an amazing place very close to Otranto! The family room is big, breakfast really complete and the pool was the best! The nature around is like a dream! They have a very fancy restaurant but we did not make use of it, also the Spa looks amazing! The best of all was the service of Valentina! She was so amazing when we had a small issue making sure we had the best service ever! She is really a star! I would definitely recommend this accomodation!

We book a room on the first floor, but they gave as the second floor. When I told them this is not what I booked, they told me this was an upgrade.I told them I don't want the upgrade, but they said there are no other rooms. They want you to pay in advance, so when I told them I don't like the place, there was no option to leave. They offered to help with our luggage, but they ware just looking at as when we were making our way on the stairs. If you like to look at a stone wall on your vacation, this is the place to stay!

Very nice surroundings, the nature present at every step, the staff was friendly and experienced. The breakfast was so tasty, with local and good quality products. You should give the SPA a try. The outdoor pool is amazing, although we couldn't swim at that moment.

For day 3, we recommend exploring the southeast side side of town. Start the day off with Porto Badisco beach, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Spiaggia della Punticeddha. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

A beautiful and quiet pebble and rock beach. We parked in the town and walked down, there are a few parking spots available right next to the beach. It’s quite small, but plenty of spots and the water is beautifully clear.
Zena V — Google review
Porto Badisco is a small cove that feels like a secret, even though it’s no longer unknown. The water is absolutely pristine, perfect for snorkeling, just bring your goggles and dive into a world of underwater beauty. But be warned: it’s freezing. Seriously. Probably due to an underwater spring flowing into the bay, the temperature here is noticeably lower than anywhere else along the coast. It's refreshing... or a shock to the system, depending on your mood. Either way, you won't forget your first dip. Now, about that chiringuito right in front of the cove, let’s just say, avoid it like the plague. Prices are way out of proportion, and the charm doesn't quite justify the cost. Better to pack your own food and enjoy the natural setting without the side of sticker shock. In short: beautiful spot, unforgettable water, questionable bar. Go for the swim, stay for the scenery and bring a towel and some snacks.
Robean W — Google review
This ”beach” is amazing for snorkeling! I went here in the afternoon when the UV was low to snorkel and swim. We saw so many fish! It’s really easy to get there, I don’t really understand why people find it hard to get down to. There’s an asphalt road going to it. The beach is extremely small, so don’t go here for being on the beach. There are plenty of places to get into the water aside from the beach though, so you won’t get sandy feet. Once in the water there are quite a few rocks so if you have sensitive feet, you may want to use watershoes. Again, we saw so many fish it’s crazy, can’t recommend it enough.
Fabian K — Google review
The water is beautiful. There is no sandy beach there anymore as you see in google maps. There is pebbles and rocks there. Make sure to bring swimming shoes if you don’t like standing on rocks barefoot. Still worth a visit. Could be tricky in high season to find parking if the carpark up the hill on main road is full.
Denton N — Google review
It is a natural cove with a beautiful emerald green sea. Unfortunately the beach is no longer there after heavy rains destroyed it. The beautiful cliffs remain and, alas, even some rubbish here and there. Spectacular sea, small charming bay, no beaches. A place to visit absolutely. From the parking lot you can reach it on foot in a few minutes. There are no establishments, everything very Wild. Highly recommended!!

Fantastically fresh seafood in a proper family restaurant frequented by the locals, which is always a good sign. You can pick your lobsters and crabs still alive from a tank: you don't get much fresher than that!

Located near Otranto Castle, Chiesa di San Pietro is a cross-shaped Byzantine church with uncertain origins, possibly dating back to the 5th century. The present structure is believed to have been built in the 10th century. Visitors are greeted by a person willing to share the church's history and answer questions. The well-maintained church boasts unparalleled charm and courtesy from its managers, inviting visitors to admire its frescoes and soak in its magnificence.

'worth a detour' (as Michelin would class it) stunning collection of frescoes of different eras. Should have taken a photo of the opening hours posted on the door (sorry) but changed somewhat from photo amongst these reviews - now €5 admission with entry to Diocesan Museum too (or vice-versa) but only cards taken at church (by guardienne just inside door). Detailed (loan) guide to frescoes in several languages available.

We looked from the doorway, it was absolutely beautiful, but a small one room building (some photos on maps are of a different bigger church). 5 euros seemed a bit much with currency exchange in mind for this activity given the size. Also some people were turned away an hour before the sign outside said it would be closed.

Definitely worth a visit. The church is as impressive as the story when the Turks conquered the city and killed all the men and boys in the village, along with the 800 people who gathered at the church and resisted to change their faith to the Islam. Also they where killed… Their skulls and bones are still displayed inside the church…

Spiaggia della Punticeddha is a beautiful bay that offers a tranquil atmosphere and calm waters even during waves. However, it's important to note that visibility in the water can be limited to less than one meter during windy conditions. Accessing the sea requires descending a ladder carved into the rock, leading directly into the crystal-clear waters. The landscape features fascinating overhanging rocks, making it an ideal spot for less experienced swimmers.
We were already tired from a full day of swimming and sunning, but glad we decided to make one last stop. A brief walk along a dry dusty path opens onto a stunning vista of turquoise waters with very few people. Feels magical and secret. You can jump in from a rock or walk down to the beach from a set of hidden stairs carved into the cliff. Along the coast were calm shallow waters easy to swim in.

To access the sea you need to go down a ladder carved into the rock and at the end you enter directly into the water. Ristorante Terrazza San Pietro is a relaxed eatery with an outdoor area and a cozy terrace that showcases local seafood and pasta dishes. It offers one of the finest meals in the vicinity, served by extremely professional and courteous staff who provide excellent recommendations. The appetizers include incredibly delicious aubergine, while the fresh orecchiette with hearty sauce leaves patrons satisfied.
From the moment we arrived, everything about this restaurant was exceptional. The atmosphere is elegant yet relaxed, with beautifully set tables and attentive staff that made us feel genuinely welcome. The food was absolutely divine. I had the orecchiette in a creamy tomato sauce topped with freshly grated cheese — a comforting, rich, and perfectly balanced dish that I could eat every day. The burrata starter, served with arugula, tomatoes, and a sprinkle of herbs, was heavenly too. Every detail, from presentation to service, was flawless. The staff was friendly and efficient, and the whole dining experience felt smooth and enjoyable. Whether you're a foodie or just looking for a great place to eat, I can’t recommend this place enough. A must-visit!

Perhaps one of the best meals I've had in trip. The service was extremely professional and courteous, with excellent recommendations provided by the staff. The aubergine was exceedingly delicious in the appetizers and the orecchiette was so fresh! The sauce hearty and made me content. The staff's recommendations for dessert for spot-on. The dessert was so good that I didn't crave any gelato after dinner!

We had a delicious meal! The pasta was the best I’ve ever tasted! The staff were incredibly friendly, and it was such a lovely spot to sit and relax. The wine that was served alongside was absolutely perfect!

Tested out a lot of the restaurants in the vicinity of centro. We had the best pasta here hands down. GRAN TORTELLI AI CROSTACEI CON CREMA DI SCAMPI E GRANELLA DI PISTACCHIO (Must-Have if you like creamy pasta + the filling is a delight) SPAGHETTI AGLIO, OLIO, PEPERONCINO, GAMBERI E BOTTARGA (if you like it hot, garlicy and smooth) Also one of the few restaurants that asked if we wanted our red wine chilled. Recommend.

Great food and service here - we arrived very late for lunchtime service but were still made to feel very welcome and comfortable - we had a superb meal of fresh fish and potatoes cooked to perfection. There was a lovely breeze on the upper level, well shaded and so provided just the right setting.

VIAPUNTA7 Tapas Restaurant is a top spot to savor local cuisine in Otranto, away from the touristy areas. The restaurant offers tapas-sized dishes, allowing guests to sample a variety of flavors and then indulge in their favorites on subsequent visits. With its stunning sea view, VIAPUNTA7 serves up fresh ingredients and creative flavor combinations in beautifully presented dishes.
Great spot for an aperitif in the shade overlooking the water. Generous portion sizes, very tasty food. Service is prompt and it was a great place to sit overlooking the water after a day at the beach.

We had such a lovely dinner here. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed evening. We ordered a full fresh fish with seafood—everything was beautifully cooked and full of flavor. It was our first time trying sardines with parmigiana and zucchini flowers, and they ended up being the highlight of the evening—absolutely delicious! Everything felt fresh, local, and made with care. Highly recommend for anyone looking for real, thoughtful food in Otranto.

What a great find. A beautiful restaurant/tapas bar on the waterfront in Otranto. We ordered 6 different tapas dishes plus a semi freddo to share and everything was excellent. Federica the waitress was so friendly and the food was first class. Alici fritte, horse stew (which was surprisingly good 🐎) mussels, prawns 🦐 and bruschetta. 10 out of 10

We had the most amazing lunch at ViaPunta7 today. The tapas is wonderful. Afraid to say we didn’t get any photos of the food as it got demolished as soon as it arrived. Not only wonderful food, but in a superb location overlooking the bay at Otranto. We were looked after by the lovely Veronica and Tommy who could not do enough for us. You can find it behind the old church at the opposite side of the beach from the Costello. I cannot recommend this place highly enough for a relaxing lunch or romantic supper.

Amazing experience! We happened by this evening and stayed for dinner. One of our best meals in Italy!! Great service. Fabulous ambience. The stuffed zucchini flowers were delicate. The sautéed greens perfection. The semifreddo was unbelievably delicious! On a quiet street. Lots of Italians dining here so we felt removed from the honky tonk tourist spots.

Fabulous restaurant offering a diverse range of tapas, pasta and fresh seafood. Views across the beach to the Adriatic in a great setting. Service is excellent- a special commendation to Cristof who was very attentive, assisted us with our dining choices and was a pleasure to converse with...recommend highly!

Restaurant open for lunch, the receptionist was really unfriendly, perhaps because we didn't speak Italian (but we did speak English). The second server was nicer, the setting was magnificent above the beach, the food was good, the presentation simple, but it's not necessarily worth returning specifically, at least not for our chosen dishes.

AVOID We had an awful experience - the service was terrible - we booked in advance and so turned up on time - they then had a mini argument in front of us about where we should sit…We were the ignored for 25 minutes - ordered drinks and some starters - arrived promptly and tasted good - the waited and waited to order mains - managed to flag someone down and then had a question on what the fish was in the fish main - threw them into disarray and had to wait until the main serve r could say. It was sea bass 🤣🤣. Ordered a main and a glass of red wine- waited and waited and waited after 30 m in utes we asked after the red….apologised and said it would be out shortly -then asked what did we order again…glass of red came then after 60 minutes I asked after the main course - we’d been in the restaurant over two hours at this point and people were being served around us… asked again said two minutes…then it appeared - it was raw the prawns were grey and the fish still very cold maybe even frozen in parts - we’d waited over an hour - by this point I was like this is ridiculous - thought I’d raise it with the lead waitress - well this was a mistake - berated I. Italian - it’s off the bill, it’s off the bill - no apology for the delay or the experience - absolutely embarrassing and no recognising they could have given us food poisoning - I’m not a complainer - look at my reviews - but I’d say avoid avoid avoid you have no idea what you’ll be getting and so many more amazing places to enjoy

Lido
Seafood restaurant
Atlantis Beach in Otranto is a charming bathing establishment nestled in a natural inlet with white sand and clear blue waters. The shallow depth of the sea makes it perfect for families with children. Equipped with umbrellas, sunbeds, and deckchairs, this lido ensures privacy even during peak seasons. Visitors can enjoy a private swimming zone, kids' play area, and indulge in raw seafood at the on-site restaurant.
This was a fantastic meal and experience! The food was excellent and the view from the front porch was breath taking. All the sea food was daily catch. Wonderful!

This is a restaurant that operates as beach restaurant during daytime and gets fancier for the nighttime. We have been there for dinner. Mostly seafood but you can have some other dishes too. Not the perfect service, meals are above average. Kind of overrated.
Levent K — Google review
Atlantis Otranto is a lovely spot with direct access to the sea. Families with small children will especially appreciate the natural pool, which makes it easy for parents to keep an eye on little ones. The umbrellas are set quite close together for my taste, but that seems to be the standard. The on-site restaurant serves excellent food, though it leans toward the pricier side; fortunately, the bar also offers plenty of more casual options. Overall, I’d recommend it, particularly if you’re visiting with young children

Aleksandra R — Google review
We came here especially to eat their fresh raw fish. It's not freshly prepared. What I mean is that we ordered the large raw seafood plate and it arrived at our table in minutes. One might argue ... excellent service but for me it was already prepared to be rushed out and the quality was poor. If your mussels are truely fresh, when you squeeze your lemon on them they swell up a bit. Plus we found sand in some of them. Not great. Also the other appetisers we ordered didn't seem over priced and poor quality. The wine was nice as was the second plate of pasta again nice but that's all. The kids menu was 9€ and all you got was pasta in tomato sauce so again for me that was over priced. They could have included a dessert for the kid. Best part was the dessert which was ice cream covered with some local alcoholic beverage. The waiter was nice enough but the manager/owner seemed anxious and up tight and one point chased a stray dog out of the diner. All in all....well I'm writing this while sat on my hotel toilet waiting for either wind or...😐 🤔

We found this place on a Sunday in April 2022 for lunch. Quite busy at the time, and we were without a reservation. But we were served. There was no menu with pricing. The fish was good. the pasta was undercooked. No one came to ask about the food quality. Generally bad service. But this restaurant has a Michelin ranking!! Figure that. And the bill was 90 Euro's for lunch. Not worth the value.

Excellent dinner (the burrata ravioli with shrimp were life- changing) and nice servers. The view and location can't be beat. Only downside were abundant but harmless bugs that were active right at sunset (they said it only happens when it's hot). It bothered some people and they went inside to eat...we stayed outside and covered our glasses and it was fine, even if a bit distracting.

Lovely location but service was very slow considering it wasn't that busy, and there are only two toilets (one for men, one for women) which led to queues even when the restaurant was only half-full. My food was generally good but the others I was with said theirs was average.

In particular during the religious solemnity of San Francesco da Paola, which falls on April 2nd but whose feast is celebrated on a Sunday in May on a date that varies from year to year, the feast opens with the procession that starts from the hill of Martiri and arrives at Porta Terra where an ancient rite dating back to 1600 is repeated: the mayor of Otranto delivers the key to the city to the saint, the same key that the mayor of the time delivered upon the arrival of the wooden statue, created by the Venetian school. Monuments & Statues
As you approach the enchanting old town of Otranto, take a moment to soak in the beauty of the piazza adorned with white stone and the striking "Monumento agli Eroi e ai Martiri Otrantini del 1480." This poignant monument pays tribute to Saints Anthony Primaldo and his fellow martyrs—813 brave souls who met their tragic fate on August 14, 1480, at the hands of Turkish forces led by Gedik Ahmet Pascia.
The monument stands in the center of a huge square in the old town of Otranto. Most of the stories I heard here refer to the siege of the city by the Turks - the same is true with this monument. All the known names and surnames of the inhabitants who defended the city were engraved on its boards. There are not many of them, their memory has faded over the years, but maybe thanks to this statue we will be able to remember these few chosen ones. During a several-hour trip, I had the opportunity to learn a little more about the history of the city. I saw the citadel, which at one time was both a school and a prison 😁, I saw the thick walls of the city; holes from which cannons were fired; Cannonballs decorate the entrances to some shops. I also recommend entering the cathedral, where one of the side wall is decorated with the skulls of defenders, murdered by the Turks. Apart from the historical aspect, the appearance of the city is also impressive. The characteristic white color is so typical for all Italian cities. However, the views from the city walls to the sea are unique. Directly below them there is a very long promenade where people sunbathe on blankets and swim in the pure, transparent sea. Maybe there is not enough sand for complete happiness, but everyone wanted to dip their feet in the water 🙂 In cafes you can eat ice cream, drink iced coffee, or bittersweet Chinotto. I recommend getting lost in the narrow streets of Otranto :) Personally, it is the most beautiful city in Puglia.

(Translated by Google) This monument, which stands in a beautiful square overlooking the sea, commemorates the events of the Battle of Otranto in 1480 and the tragic events that unfolded during its sacking by the Turkish invaders. A very sad event for the city, especially since Otranto never recovered. The Turkish army, which landed right near the beach now known as "Turkish Bay," sacked this thriving city with such violence that it reverberated throughout the courts of Europe. Without going into the macabre details of the brutality of the Turks' actions, this monument commemorates the 800 inhabitants who were massacred.

Azienda Vitivinicola Tenuta Merico offers a warm and friendly welcome to visitors, with the owner, Daniele, opening up the cellars for tastings even when closed. The vineyard is known for its high-quality wines and has an interesting story behind it. Visitors have praised the hospitality of the hosts and their willingness to accommodate special requests such as separate plates for guests with allergies.
We really enjoyed the different wines and the host of the day! She told us a lot about the process of making wine and the different grapes. We really recommend this tour! (We took tour 2, where food was included and was very delicious) Greets Nicolas & Manon

Amazing experience. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic history of the family business from our guide. Wine was excellent and the food was just as good. Very generous lunch and servings of delicious wine. We had to bring a few home with us.

My friends and I booked your number 2 at this winery and had the most wonderful time! Elizabeth was so kind and accommodating and an all around incredible host. Our one guest has a gluten allergy and before the tasting they went to the kitchen and made her a separate plate just in case. They were amazing! On another note the farms surroundings are beautiful and the restaurant in the property has been the best place we have eaten in the province. 10 out of 10 recommend!

We had an amazing time at the Azienda Vitivinocola Tenuta Merico. The place is beautiful, our guest Elizabeta was really friendly and enthusiastic with the wines. Very good explanation and tasting. The wines are quite great and have a very good price! Besides that, the food that is served to pair with the wines is excellent as well!

Wonderful winery. We showed up randomly during harvest season and they were kind enough to seat us and give us a real tasting. We tried five different wines including a negroamaro and a primitivo and a blend, as well as a negroamaro rose. Our house was very informative and helpful and she gave us platters of cheese and snacks for free! The wine was delicious and affordable and the location was beautiful. I think they could build out their tasting area more and make it more of a customer friendly experience but all in all it was a fantastic experience that felt very authentic and special. There is a large field of "wine mothers" eg wine grape shoots right next door which was also very cool. Highly recommend stopping by here for great hospitality if you're in the area.

Seafood restaurant
Located in a small town in the province of Otranto, La Polperia is a relaxed seafood restaurant with a terrace that offers paninis. The menu features both raw and fried fish, as well as Mediterranean dishes. The service here is good, and the food is definitely worth trying out.
Very nice place with lot of fish specialties!. Awsome fish burger!

Really nice looking place with good and friendly service but unfortunately food was sub par. We were 4 people and none of us liked her/his food.
Pekka K — Google review
Such a shame to use plastic cups in 2025. We had different options of seafood fries as appetiser and they were really good. Then we moved to seafood sandwiches and for all the four different ones, it looked like something was missing (and they were small). About the service, they served three sandwiches out of four first, and the last one only after fifteen minutes. Probably the price is due to the location, but the feeling is that it’s not worth it.

The restaurant has nice terrace with a view. The waiter was also really kind, but food was a bit overpriced. You can get better foot for better price at other places that are around.

Can't really rate the food as we just went for a quick Aperitivo. Drinks were the worst we had so far in Italy, felt watered, complained and got another watered one, for a 9€ spritz, it has to be beyond perfect. Won't recommend.

People have spoken about how amazing Italian food can be well I have to start by saying you will 100% experience an extraordinary dining experience at La Bella Idrusa, Otranto Italy. La Bella Idrusa one of if not the best places I have ever been blessed to dine at. The food is not churned out for the numbers you will see waiting to access this fine dining experience. The food is defiantly made from the heart and the attention to detail head chef Mario goes to, to ensure guests receive the best quality local produce is second to none. Every dish Mario and his team prepares shows how passionate and committed they are producing exceptional food, which I have to say made every dish truly remarkable. La Bella Idrusa is the most welcoming restaurant I’ve been to, the hospitality is exemplary and the team do all they can to ensure you receive an exceptional dinning experience. Yes they are busy and at times, especially at weekends when there will be a huge queue outside the restaurant, you just have to ask yourself why? Just trust when I say it’s worth the wait. If you have a special function in mind and want a dedicated team to provide unbelievable food don’t be afraid to ask the team if they can accommodate your special occasion. I hope my pictures do the food justice. Thank you, Mario, Franco, Nadia, Marco, and the entire team at La Bella Idrisa. I will continue to share what a beautiful place Otranto and restaurant La Bella Idrusa are to visit.

in short: little taste for a lot of money! unfortunately the food quality was much below the stunning atmosphere. each dish we had (parmigiana, la bella idrusa, pizza balsamica) was lacking in taste & complexity. e.g. i've never had dried tomatoes or capers with as little flavor as here. the staff was friendly but too rushed to clean plates off our table in 30 mins.
Hayko R — Google review
Fresh ingredients, and you can taste it. We shared the swordfish carpaccio, pepper mussels and seafood pasta. Everything cooked to perfection and tasted great. No need for salt or pepper at all. Tiramisu was also good.

With all the great reviews and passing this place for a week now we decided to wait the 40 minutes and go for it. How wrong could we be as I have been on the toilet much of the night with diarrhea (my wife said the kitchen looked filthy when she had to wait for the toilet next to it). The hostess was very nice but like much of the staff overworked as we had to wait so long even with 9 empty clean tables. The place has an amazing position at the entrance to the old town with a view out to the harbour, so 5 stars for atmosphere. Locals seemed to get seated right away. The waiter came within 8 minutes (unlike another family we saw wait for 15 while we waited) to take our order but no smile or friendly conversation. He delivered some of the drinks, starter of calamari and salads with plastic packets of oil/vinegar (classy!) fairly quickly but then disappeared. Our wine we ordered never came. The mixed salad looked like something I was served in a school back in 1970, two hard tomatoes quartered with a few shavings of carrot on a bed of chopped cheap lettuce made many hours before. We waited and waited for 40+ minutes for our pizzas which when they came were mis-sold. The prosciutto was just a cheap cut of ham, damp and warm, not crisp on a watery passata sauce with no flavour, no reduction with herbs etc. The porcini mushrooms just tasted and looked like portobello shrooms so again mis-sold. The base of all the pizza were undercooked and soggy, soggy soggy cardboard, totally tasteless and not crisp. I have made many pizzas myself and this tasted like my first experiment gone wrong with the liquid from mushrooms ruining the pizza. We couldnt pay from the table but we had to go back to the hostess and pay and wait yet again. They were doing a lot of take away service which was causing delays at all the other tables I saw who had to wait and wait, many people longer than us. So poorly managed. And to make matters worse I have been on the toilet for much of the night due to cramps and some issues with the food so now I am paying again. It was not what I ate earlier in the day which is from a bakery (with no meat or fish) we have been going to all week. So far the worst Italian meal I have had in Italy with over ten visits in the last 35 years. Sorry I really wanted to like this place, maybe Mario the chef was on holiday. Just remember because something is popular doesnt mean it is good.
Chris D — Google review
We came here for pizza after seeing the Puglia Guys recommendation. I will say their recommendations are fab, but this time they really let us down. We had antipasti, pasta and a pizza and all were tasteless and poor ingredients. I can't believe I have now had genuinely bad pizza in Italy! I didn't know that was possible. This place is a tourist trap.

We opted for a lunch menu that included three courses, but unfortunately, it was a letdown. The portions were small( look at photo below for grilled fish) and the dishes lacked flavor. Despite being a three-course meal, it wasn't nearly enough to feel satisfied or full. Overall, it did not meet our expectations, and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Worst meal in our 2 week stay in Italy. Food was mediocre and service was abhorrent. Wrong food delivered the first time, each time we asked for something, be it another drink, check, or “take our payment so we can leave” the server would continually walk past us empty handed. Server spent more time trying to get passing tourists to sit down than attend to actual customers Only thing decent about this place is the view Wasted valuable time on a tour stop here

Il Contadino is a charming farmstay that offers comfortable cottages and an outdoor swimming pool. It also provides upscale dining options and wine tasting experiences. This place is truly remarkable, with its delightful cuisine, warm family atmosphere, and rich cultural ambiance. Guests will feel like they are part of a close-knit community during their stay. Additionally, the farmstay is conveniently located near a beautiful beach that offers breathtaking views. The spacious rooms are not only clean but also aesthetically pleasing.
I’ve been going to Il Contadino for over 15 years as it was discovered once on a windy day on the way to probably one of the best beach in the world at Baia Dei Turchi…..It is the best overall deal you can find these days considering the accommodation, location, food and the wonderful kind service provided. They have the best pool and never seen one that is as clean as this one to begin with…Then we got a two bedroom bungalow with AC in each room, full kitchen, linens and it was spotless. They also provide laundry services on request. The menu is outstanding with fresh fish every day and if you want something that is not on it ..just ask and they’ll make it for you. !! Breakfast buffet is included as well. Then, we asked what time was check out and the answer was “ what time do you wish to leave?”…How accommodating is that!! One note to conclude about the WiFi that could be a lot better as it is very slow but that’s pretty much everywhere in Italy once you’re out of the big cities. So thank you ! Thank you ! For your kindness and everything you provided…Specially that seafood carpaccio that is out of this world !! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ All the way ! See you next time

We used to come often to this place in summer because the food is really tasty. However, the experience this year was different. The woman at the cashier is very rude and completely not organized. We had to wait simply to ask for food take away for 15 minutes (she was speaking to a friend meanwhile). After that she informed that the kitchen is closed (was definitely opened as people were still coming). Very sad, but today they lost loyal clients. Rude behavior with clients is definitely not acceptable…
