Rothenburg in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Rothenburg, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval towns, with intact city walls, half-timbered houses, and cobbled lanes that feel frozen in time. Visitors can walk the fortifications, climb the town hall tower for sweeping views, and explore landmarks like the Plönlein and St. Jacob’s Church with its famous altarpiece. The town is also known for its year-round Christmas museum and shops, as well as traditional Franconian cuisine and local wines. Its compact size makes it easy to experience on foot while still offering plenty of museums, viewpoints, and historic squares.
With favorites like Medieval Crime Museum, Historik Hotel Gotisches Haus Garni, and Hotel & Restaurant Reichsküchenmeister - Das Herz von Rothenburg, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Glocke A. u. K. Thürauf and Eiscafé-Pizzeria Italia so you can get the best taste of Rothenburg while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Plönlein, meaning "Little Square by the Fountain," is a picturesque landmark in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, situated at the intersection of two popular tourist routes. This iconic area features charming half-timbered houses, a small fountain, and cobbled streets lined with shops. Plönlein has been prominently featured on travel guides and even served as inspiration for the medieval European setting in Disney's Pinocchio.
What a beautiful and magical town! We have visited Rothenburg ob der Tauber twice in the last 5 years. It holds a special place in our hearts. Stay the night if you can to enjoy the quiet and beautiful scenery away from the day crowds, especially if you visit in the summer or for the Christmas markets. If you want a picture here without the crowd, go in the early morning or late evening.

It's a lovely place to visit if you're in the area. We stopped there on our trip from Munich to Paderborn. It's well worth a day trip, and a pleasant place to spend an evening. There is ample parking around the old town, which we recommend; it's easy to park and then walk. The old town is beautifully preserved and very attractive. There are many nice restaurants and cafes. One thing to keep in mind is that most shops are closed on Mondays.

The most photographed place in Rothenburg. Postcard views. It's like being in a fairy tale. You could film here.

This is a cute landmark of this city. This is where the social media pics get generated. I would recommend in order for you to be alone in this pic, either have a camera that can delete extra peeps on ur pic or show up on a day where there are not many tourists around, so a cloudy day or at night.

I returned to Rotenburg on the Romantic Road for the first time in 47 years ago. The townscape remains the same as it was back then, a medieval walled town, and the enchanting scenery is captivating. The German Christmas Museum has a wide selection of Christmas-related souvenirs and is a must-see. It also has many wonderful sights, such as Plönlein, Market Square, St. Jacob's Church, the city walls, and the Gärch Blacksmith Shop, making it a town worth visiting at least once. However, it is now extremely crowded with tourists, and it feels as though the simple atmosphere of the past has been lost.

Plönlein – Rothenburg’s Fairytale Corner Plönlein is a picturesque spot that feels like stepping into a storybook. This charming intersection, with its half-timbered house, cobblestone streets, and medieval towers, is one of the most photographed places in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It’s a peaceful spot, especially early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Whether you’re snapping photos or just soaking in the atmosphere, Plönlein is a must-see for anyone visiting this beautiful town.

It reminds me of a map in counter strike. Take a day trip here hy driving all the way from munich. Beautiful old town, however it gets quiet after 6pm and became a ghost town and dark 🤣

The Medieval Crime Museum, located in the enchanting town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, offers a fascinating glimpse into the darker side of history. This unique museum showcases an eclectic collection of medieval torture devices, legal texts, and art that vividly illustrate humanity's past transgressions. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing criminal proceedings from investigation to sentencing during medieval times. Among its chilling artifacts are notorious instruments like the Iron Maiden and various punishment tools that reveal the harsh realities of justice in that era.
They got enough things to show, would probably take you a good hour or more depending on how fast you are going through the things. It was 6.50€ for students and I think around 9.50€ for adults. For a person who likes to know more about how things were back then it would be interesting. One great thing is that almost all the things in the museum has an english text so it is definitely tourist friendly. Some of the things are replicas and some of them are real. They have a huge collection of torture devices and things that are related to criminals back then. Would recommend it if you like these types of museums!

In a town full of history, there is this very complete museum of medieval torture which has an amazing collection of old "law" books and explains with great detail and the help of objects how "justice" was applied at the middle age. The way out is well displayed, no worries, you won't get lost.

Great place for history lovers to spend few hours getting to know law and punishment history in the city through the ages.Very interesting exposition, great artifacts, loads of information. Really worth a visit.

The receptionist speaks good English. The place is well maintained and all article history is also written in English. They have clean toilets as well inside. The exit although is very confusing, they need to add more signs for exit.

The German Christmas Museum, located in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, is a nostalgic museum that opened in 2000. It showcases over 5,000 exhibits tracing the history of Christmas celebrations from the 4th century to the mid-20th century. The museum features familiar and long-forgotten Christmas paraphernalia and displays local Yuletide customs' evolution over the years. Additionally, it has a popular shop selling an overwhelming variety of stunning Christmas ornaments and decorations.
I enjoyed the Christmas museum inside the Kathe Wohlfahrt store. Descriptions of the exhibits are in English and German. It was interesting to see the way ornaments have changed and the different tree toppers, cards, santas, etc.
K W — Google review
Very small museum. We were the only people there and I can understand why after seeing the display. The shop on the other hand, was crowded. I wouldn't recommend spending money to see the museum. Just save the money and buy something from the shop instead. No toilets for customers available in the museum or the shop.
Daisy A — Google review
I didn’t visit museum but the shop is most impressive one I have ever seen on the topic. Number of the toys and decorations is overwhelming. The shop itself is much more expansive than you would think initially, resembles a maze. You can move only in certain direction to get back to the exit. Essential experience visiting Rothenburg.

What a stunning place! Kathe Kohlfahrt brings joy all year round here at the Christmas museum! Loved learned about the origins of my favorite holiday.

Amazing place!!! Outside was +33 degrees by Celsius, and in the one moment you step in the absolute Christmas feeling. Gorgeous, I don’t know such another place in Europe, in addition the town as it self is like small fairy tale town. Kids very absolutely happy! Would like to come back in winter time.

Great museum full of historical Christmas ornaments and other items. Much of it is behind glass panels to protect it, but this can make good pictures a little difficult. This museum is located within a HUGE Christmas store (be prepared to spend some $$$ lol!)

Käthe Wohlfahrt - Weihnachtsdorf is a must-visit destination in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. This flagship Christmas shop offers an enchanting experience with its magical decor and beautiful ornaments. While some may find the Käthe Wohlfahrt brand to be mass-produced and overpriced, it remains a popular spot for tourists seeking German souvenirs such as Christmas ornaments depicting scenes of Rothenburg and traditional German pretzels.
A store that will make you feel like it's Christmas all year long! The decorations are beautiful, the variety of Christmas toys is beyond imagination. You can easily pass more than two hours at Käthe Wohlfahrt and not feel bored. The interiors are stunning - it's like they recreated a Christmas village inside! The prices are very expensive, so we didn't buy anything, but were very happy that we visited this store. It was like a museum visit!
Mariam H — Google review
I absolutely love this Christmas store! 😍 I could spend all day just walking around taking it all in. It really does feel like walking into a Christmas dream. I purchased a pyramid from them and had it shipped home. They have a friendly and accommodating staff.
Deanna W — Google review
Amazing shop, just huge and full of fantastic decorations for Christmas. So many things to see in here. And there's a Christmas museum next door too. If in the vicinity, this is 100% worth a visit.
Gail — Google review
We were told by friends to make sure and stop by the Käthe Wohlfahrt store. There are actually 2 stores, a smaller one and the large, 2 story shop. We found so many beautiful and unique Christmas decorations. Everyone working there is kind and very helpful. They will ship items purchased back to the states and the cost is reasonable. A great store to get souvenirs and Christmas decorations.

Extremely unhappy with our cuckoo clock purchase after visiting Rothenburg. After receiving it and using proper instructions to carefully hang the clock, the pendulum stops two minutes before the hour randomly. I sent several emails to them with not having a live person to call and nothing was done. They responded at first but when the questioned was asked about mailing it to the location they recommended for repair they have not answered back. It is in two huge boxes and to mail it would be an expense. Then there is the cost of the repair that can run into money. It has a warranty but with no response it appears it’s under our expense for a brand new clock that was close to 1,600 dollars. They also mailed the package to the wrong street address then postal service made it almost impossible to receive and said it might get mailed back after waiting for almost two months for the delivery. Fortunately four daily trips to the post office saved the pkg from getting returned to Germany. Never buy a clock from this company. I can’t even use it at this point until it is repaired. I’d give zero stars if I could.
Lynn S — Google review
Truly something special. Can’t get over how big this store is, just keeps going and going. I thought we might make it out unscathed, but right towards the end we spotted the perfect nativity scene. Had them box it up and send it back home. Couldn’t have been easier.
Dennis P — Google review
This place is an absolute wonderland for all things Christmas! It's a massive store filled with every possible item you could need for decorating during the holiday season. From ornaments and lights to wreaths and garlands, they have it all. The centerpiece is a giant, beautifully decorated Christmas tree that truly captures the festive spirit. The whole store is Christmas-themed, creating a magical atmosphere that makes you feel like you've stepped into a different world. It’s the perfect spot for Christmas shopping, whether you're looking for unique decorations or gifts. A must-visit for anyone who loves the holiday season!

Hotel Eisenhut is a charming accommodation nestled in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Housed in 16th-century buildings, this warm hotel offers a delightful dining experience at Agnes Stuberl and a cozy piano bar for unwinding. Guests can also relax in the patio garden while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
Both the place and the personnel are simply FANTASTIC!! From the time that my daughter and I walked into the hotel, we felt that we were being treated like special guests. Service at the reception desk was both friendly and extremely efficient. The person who took care of our check-in provided prompt and courteous answers to all of our many questions. We knew right away that this was a very special place! Both of the rooms we had reserved were outstanding. Both locations faced the magnificent Tauber Valley… and they were H U G E ! Beautiful amenities were included in each of the rooms. The breakfast buffet which was offered on the next morning was also outstanding. There was an excellent selection of fine foods…. more than enough for anyone! The wait staff was kind and courteous and attentive to the special needs I have with some limited mobility. We tend to travel a great deal, but both my daughter and I cannot recall a nicer hotel experience ever!!!!!! Danke, Merci, Gracias, Thanks!
KEN S — Google review
The room was beautiful and clean, and it fulfilled my request. House keeping did a great job. There was no air conditioning, but the fan was sufficient at night with the cooler temperature. I’ll definitely be back if the receptionist’s customer service improves. The only negative was the rude receptionist woman with glasses. I politely asked her one question, and she immediately gave me a side-eye. Welcoming guests politely is part of her job, not showing attitude. That’s not how you do business. And since it’s not her hotel, she probably doesn’t care whether guests return or not. I had planned to have a drink or meal at the hotel, but because of the receptionist’s rude attitude, I didn’t bother. One bad staff member can really impact your business.

Amazing hotel all around. The rooms are fantastic,...request floor 3 for the views. Best location right in the middle of everything. We walke out the door and were in the center of it all. Great place to sit an have wine or beer and snacks. The restaurant is lovely with great service!
Nicole F — Google review
It's a stunning hotel, decorated in an historical style that feels very authentic to the town itself. The room we stayed in was very spacious with a comfortable bed and beautiful bathroom. Staff at reception were helpful and the parking was a bonus. The breakfast was an additional charge (it stated it was included on booking.com at time of booking) and it was a disaster. Most of the hot food was empty for the duration of breakfast so we didn't get any. We basically paid €20 each for a saucer (yes a saucer because they didn't put bowls out) of musli and a croissant. Would definitely recommend getting breakfast elsewhere. We did raise this with reception who gave us a small box of chocolates. Also there are no tea/coffee facilities in the room but reception were able to give us a flask of water. Would stay again for location and beautiful surroundings.
Lorraine C — Google review
This hotel is in the perfect location and central to everything you would see and do during your stay. The rooms were spacious with enough space for all our luggage. The staff were very friendly and helpful. This hotel does include parking however you do need to contact the hotel in advance to reserve a spot since they have limited space. We were not informed of this and ended up having to park about 10-15 min walk away in a public lot and had to pay. It wasn't too expensive though. The bathroom was the only downfall as there was no counter space in the sink area for your makeup or toiletries. The shower was not a shower but a bathtub with a shower handle. There was a foldable wall to help keep the water in however it wasn't great and we ended up flooding the entire bathroom floor and had to go to the front desk to ask for more towels to clean it up. The water pressure was great though. I would recommend this hotel again though since you cannot beat the location.
Veronica M — Google review
Mixed feelings about this hotel. Overall not good value for money. The location is perfect, but given how small the town is, I suspect that’s the case for most hotels. Parking may be a challenge if you don’t contact the hotel early, we had no issues. The service was mixed, some helpful staff and others not very attentive at all. Housekeeping was poor even putting aside the cleaning every two days. Most importantly. Photos of the rooms are very misleading. We ended up in an old and run down annex in the building opposite the main hotel. The walls were paper thin and bathrooms outdated. The heating was also permanently on high, which became quite uncomfortable. Suspect if you have a lovely renovated room, it’s a great experience!
Hde214 — Google review
Hotel Eisenhut has a fantastic location right in the center of town. I will say that the configuration of the rooms is a bit different due to the fact that it was 4 large homes made into a hotel, but we loved the history of it. The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were large and comfortable and as I said, exceptional location. Highly recommend
Lauren O — Google review
This hotel was a beautiful historic place to stay during our visit to Rothenburg. The staff were very kind and spoke a few languages, which helped me. I speak English and some German. The hotel is located right off the town square, which is where we attended the Night Watchman tour. We didn't eat meals at this hotel, because we wanted to explore and dine around town. The building itself is old and felt old - but in a good way, a nostalgic way. It felt like a maze finding our room, which whisked us even more into that medieval mindset. I would stay here again. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that my room had no standing shower. That was a new experience for me!

Nestled in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Glocke A. u. K. Thürauf is a charming hotel housed in a historic 13th-century building that exudes character and warmth. Guests can indulge in a delightful breakfast before exploring the local area or savoring hearty meals at the hotel's inviting restaurant, which boasts an authentic stube ambiance complete with natural oak furnishings and lovely floral accents.
We spent two pleasant nights at Hotel Glocke. Our clean room with a balcony was located on the second floor in the 'new' wing. We slept well in the quiet room and comfortable bed. On the same floor, there’s also a lovely outdoor terrace for hotel guests. The hotel breakfast is generous and not busy, thanks to the spacious dining area. A definite big bonus at Glocke is the indoor parking space included in the price. However, the garage may not have space for late arrivals. The hotel’s location couldn’t be better—right next to Plönlein on the main street. Even arriving at the hotel by car through the stunning medieval town of Rothenburg is an unforgettable experience. One evening, we also enjoyed a good dinner at the hotel restaurant. The staff were friendly and helpful. We found the hotel’s pricing reasonable considering the location. We would gladly stay again!

Stopped there for a tour lunch, which was great. Cabbage roll with a meatloaf-ish thing inside which was really tasty with a side of delicious mashed potatoes. Finished off with a caramel mousse dessert to finish it off. Good place for lunch and wine!

Location is phenomenal and was really grateful for the locked garage that is only for guests! Neat room and experience. However, the rooms are super quiet and there are no fans or heat. No amenities provided (except shoe sponge and shower cap) and there’s a cost to water in the room. Showers are difficult to use also. Breakfast had options.

I didn't stay in the hotel, I had a meal in the restaurant. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The menu has some lovely dishes on it. Reasonable price for the location.

I was at this restaurant as part of a travel group with our wonderful guide Doro. She is vegan and can therefore not eat the standard meal with Schnitzel or Krautwickel. When she asked for something else, she was offered a salad or plain pasta with pesto, which she gets offered every day there as she told me. She asked the waiter if she could get 2 bananas and some peanut butter instead to get some proteins but that was rejected. I felt so sorry for her as she ended up having coffee and water since she didn‘t want to eat the same salad again. I don‘t understand why the Restaurant is not able to get a vegan Schnitzel, which I saw in the Supermarkt in Germany or something else. I assume that they are charging the tour company a full meal for her which is a scandal! Not happy at all with this behaviour and it made me really angry. If I come back to Germany, I will definitely not eat here again.

The room was amazing, top floor, corner unit with a spectacular view of the Plonlein. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. The bedding was comfortable, albeit the lack of air-conditioning meant you must rely on evening breezes to cool the room. The breakfast was large and varied, with many options reflecting local flair.

It is part of the initiative led by Dieter Gallus, the president of the association. The hotel's restaurant attracts international guests who come to enjoy regional cuisine.
The Rote Hahn is the best out of 5 restaurants I've tested throughout the last week. Very attentive and friendly staff. Immediately brought water for my dog. Immediately got a stool for my little baby. Only was able to raise my hand to the shoulder before someone came to my table to service my order. Loved it! Great crowd.

Mexican restaurant was amazing! The best I have had in my 9 months in Germany. The tacos were delicious. I loved the strawberry margaritas and the churros. So many different tequilas and the menu gives an in depth description of each one.

Lovely hotel, perfectly located in the center of town. There’s ample amount of parking spaces and you can find everything you need near this place. Only downside of this hotel is slow WiFi, but everything else is well maintained. Family friendly and cozy place to enjoy your family vacation.

One of the best spots to go to in Rothenberg for good food in a great setting. Staff was very friendly! The wurst platter was my favorite and lots of good spaetzle. Good prices. Very happy to have stopped here!

Day 2

Southwest side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the southwest side side of town. Start the day off with Castle Garden, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to St. Jakobskirche. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Castle Garden, also known as Burggarten, is a serene wooded garden located on the western side of the old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It offers colorful flowers and wonderful views across the surrounding countryside. The garden is situated on the grounds of a medieval fortress that was ruined in 1356 by an earthquake, leading to its eventual sale to the city for quarrying stone to repair Rothenburg's fortifications.
Don't miss it! Walking by the Rothemburge odT city is amazing. Visitling Castle gardens keeps the vibe and immerse yourself in history! Sunset looks especially beautiful and provides a wonderful view of the surrounding valley

We spent three days in Rottenburg am Neckar and one of the highlights of our visit was definitely the Castle Garden, or Burggarten as it’s known locally. We stumbled upon it while exploring the upper parts of the old town and it instantly became one of our favourite spots to just slow down and enjoy the moment. We took a relaxed stroll through the garden, taking in the fresh spring air while admiring the colourful flowers starting to bloom all around us. The garden is peaceful with a few benches scattered around, perfect for sitting quietly and soaking in the panoramic views over the valley and surrounding town rooftops. We loved listening to the birds – it felt like they were putting on their own little concert just for us. One thing that really stood out was the series of stone sculptures representing the four seasons – a quirky little detail that adds some character to the garden. There’s also a small historical touch with a memorial stone remembering the Jewish community that once lived here, which made us pause and reflect for a moment. The garden itself isn’t huge and there aren’t really any café facilities right there, so it’s best to grab your coffee or snack in town before heading up. We found that early mornings or late afternoons were the quietest times, especially if you prefer a more peaceful experience without too many people around. All in all, a visit to Rottenburg wouldn’t feel complete without spending some time in this lovely green space.

One of the Rothenburg highlights, castle garden is a must-see part of the town visit. Beautiful views of the countryside and lots of hiking trails below medieval walls.

Fantastic place with a nice view over Taubertal. The garden blossom was not so good during our July visit. I guess it will blossom more in May.

Lovely gardens offering something of a refuge from the hordes of tourists, of course they are here too, but not in as great numbers on the day we visited. Lovely seeing a plethora of Butterflies on the Buddleia.

Very beautiful gardens that are placed on a rocky outcrop. These gardens are nice for a stroll around and sit. There is ample seating, bins and even toilets. A good place for a picnic. You can also access paths that make there way down to the valley floor. If you enjoy a walk I recommend these. Also at the end of the gardens is a lookout platform that really lets you appreciate the area.

Castle Gate, also known as Burgturm, is a significant entrance into the castle grounds that connects to the Market Square. Following the destruction of Castle Hohenstaufen in 1356, efforts were made to fortify the West side of town, resulting in the construction of an enhanced Castle Gate completed in 1460. This gate features a drawbridge and other defensive measures.
One of the main gates of the old city. Near the gate it's a lovely park. Don't forget to see the face without a mouth on the outer wall.

Beautiful gateway between the old town and the big garden. Very relaxing area with excellent views and benches to get some rest from sightseeing. Great mood lighting during and after sunset.

I was not super impressed with this castle area. The only thing I enjoyed was the view over one wall (the view was very distant) and the garden area they have there. I was super disappointed by the ‘panoramic view’ which was just a forest.. the tower and entry way buildings are gorgeous but if you don’t have the time, don’t waste it walking in the park- it’s nothing special.
Jayde M — Google review
This gate leads you to an area that overlooks a countryside that includes bridges and rolling countryside views. Make a point to come here and take pictures. There is also a free bathroom nearby. Remember to look up as you are taking pictures, there is a tower above the arch of the gate.

If you want to see one of the highlights of this so-called romantic road, you have to see this medieval fortress, definitely! Built in 11th century (by the numerous counts of Rothenburg) located above the river Tauber. Old timbered houses, astronomical tower clocks, christmas market, craft houses, medieval shows, criminal museum etc...this is a perfect place to explore! I have been here several times along with family and friends from the US!

Historical market square
Market Square, also known as the Councillors Tavern or Ratstrinkstube, is a must-visit attraction in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. The tavern's front facade features an astronomical clock that puts on an hourly reenactment of a famous scene from history. Nearby, the town hall with its stair tower serves as a starting point for exploring the town and offers a popular viewing platform for panoramic views of the old town and its surroundings.
We have visited Rothenburg ob der Tauber twice now. Once in October 2019 and again in December 2024 for the Christmas market. What a unique and magical place! Highly recommend staying the night if you can as there are far less people around after the day visitors leave. Take the Night Watchman's tour, walk the medieval wall (it's incredible!), visit the Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas store and museum, see the medieval crime museum, walk the burggarten...so much to do!
Deanna W — Google review
If you get the opportunity to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Market Platz is just one of the many lovely parts of this well-preserved Bavarian medieval town. Great for a casual stroll! Take the opportunity to stop for coffee and cake or something stronger, admire the architecture, and people watch! There are plenty of places to choose from. Visit the shops, including the Käthe Wohlfahrt shop selling year round festive decorations.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a treasure trove of history and culture, with the majestic Town Hall standing as a testament to its architectural splendor. As you wander through this enchanting town, you'll encounter landmarks like the St. Georgsbrunnen, which showcases late Renaissance artistry. Dive into Rothenburg's rich cultural scene by exploring the Medieval Crime Museum and the delightful Christmas Museum that celebrates festive traditions year-round.
We stayed three days in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and one of the places we naturally kept coming back to was the lively Market Square with its impressive Town Hall right in the heart of it all. We were lucky enough to experience a local festival during our visit, and the whole square was packed with people enjoying live shows, music and great food from the surrounding cafés. The atmosphere was contagious – locals and visitors sitting side by side, soaking up the vibe. The Town Hall with its stunning Gothic and Renaissance architecture really stands out and feels like the heart of the town. One of our favourite little moments was watching the famous clock on the Ratstrinkstube building chime on the hour, complete with its moving figures – it’s one of those things that makes you stop and smile. We also climbed the Town Hall Tower, and although the climb is a bit of a workout with 220 steps, the views over the rooftops and the Tauber Valley are absolutely worth it. We found the square to be the perfect place to start or end the day, whether grabbing an early morning coffee or joining one of the popular evening tours like the Night Watchman tour, which kicks off right from the square. It can get busy, especially during events, so early mornings or late afternoons felt the most relaxed. Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or staying a couple of days like us, the Market Square really captures the spirit of Rothenburg.

Cool tower you can climb up to see sky view of the town. It is only 4 Euros but it is 200 steps on steep ( like >45° stairs or almost ladders) FUN and definitely worth it!!

Rathaus in Rothenburg is built in composite style of Gothic section and Renaissance addition. Its tower is a popular tourist climbing spot with spiral staircase leading to viewing platform. Rathaus was spared major destruction in WW2, so it is historically authentic.

St. Jakobskirche, located in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, is a remarkable Gothic basilica with two towering spires that date back to 1485. The church is renowned for its high altar and religious artworks, including the exceptional carved wooden shrine in the gallery. Visitors can capture stunning photos of this Gothic masterpiece, especially from a side street where picturesque roses in the foreground create a charming contrast against the aged stone of the church.
Beautiful church, a must see! The architecture is simply amazing. The altar is beautiful both in the front and the back! In fact the whole town of Rothenburg is rich in culture and history! How it has been rebuilt since the war. What touched me most were the Stumbling Stones, small brass plates being put in the ground outside the places, from were Jews were taken and sent to concentration camps. Amongst all the beauty and history cannot forget the horrors human beings inflicted on other human beings in the name of color, caste, class, religion, etc.

One of the many churches on on of the many pilgrim routes to Santiago the Compostella that pilgrims would visit in Medieval times. Dedicated to the apostle St James who's grave is in Santiago. The church was built in the 14th and 15th century and concecrated in 1485. Behind the organ on an upper floor is the beautifully carved Holy Blood altar carved from u painted limewood. It shows the Last Supper and contains a relic of the Holy Blood. On the other side of the church is the main altar where there is woodwork showing the twelve apostles.
Seimen B — Google review
Beautiful church, especially when watching and listening to a choir concert. My son performed here with about 100 kids and it was amazing. Literally brought tears streaming down my face. The feeling of being surrounded by music and seeing the church full of people, it was just magical.
Andrea M — Google review
An interesting, but plain church. I would not say it is particularly special, and there are numerous and far better examples in Europe that far exceed this in terms of relics, artwork, and interior architecture. In fact, it is quite simple in comparison, and you are unlikely to spend much more than 10 minutes there. It is, therefore, all the more surprising that they CHARGE visitors a FEE to visit, which was a first for us. Whilst I am not saying this does not exist elsewhere, I have yet to experience this in our visits to any other church or cathedral in Europe.
Jamie C — Google review
Quaint little cathedral in the heart of the medieval village. It's beautiful and the staff are kind and more than willing to share their wealth of knowledge of the church and windows and blood alter. It's so peaceful inside and of course if it's blistering hot outside it's worth the few euro to take a break in the cool stones of the church

This ended up being one of my favorite meals on my recent trip to Germany. Rothenburg has many restaurants to choose from, but I would highly recommend this one! The prices are good, the service was friendly, and the food was delicious. The kasespatzle was excellent, chanterelle soup was good, and they make a great burger. I also shared a bottle of franconian wine that was really nice. On top of all that, the inside of this restaurant is a work of art, detailed carvings everywhere you look. It was really special.

Delicious German dishes with generous portions — we had schnitzel with fries, a thick beef burger with egg and salad topping, and creamy macaroni and cheese full of flavor. The house beer on tap was smooth and paired perfectly with the food. The ambiance felt like a true old German tavern, with beautiful wood carvings on the ceiling, walls, tables, and chairs showing amazing craftsmanship. A great place to enjoy good food and atmosphere!

Went here to eat. Food is reasonably priced given its location near the main square. Food was okay to good, I recommend getting the meat loaf with side of potatoes since that was the most tasteful- better to skip the potato balls since they don’t have much flavor 😶 Potato balls genuinely surprised me— never encountered food that actually had 0 flavor. I don’t know if that’s what the Germans intended. But, overall, good choice to eat if you really want to eat at the main square 🥔

The location of the place was really good, good spot to take a drink, we ordered a sausage and fries but for my personal opinion I really don't like it. I went to this place in Ocotber the weather was starting ti get a bit cold and they keep it really warm with heater in the chairs.

This review regards the restaurant only: food and wine is quite average as for Polish standards (Polish cuisine is a hybrid of Slavic and German), but at the same time, due to the restaurant's prime location, it's overpriced. Overall, nothing special and not really worth it.

Greek restaurant
The restaurant Delphi, now under new ownership, offers a pleasant dining experience with an average interior. The waiter, although courteous, emits a noticeable tobacco odor and frequently coughs. The food itself is delightful; it is recommended to try the diverse assortment of meats and fishes on the menu. While declining the owner's offer of complimentary shots due to personal alcohol abstinence, it was still appreciated. If in Rottenburg again, considering revisiting this establishment would be worthwhile.
Good value for money. Greek style mixed grill and a German style schnitzel. We arrived short before closing of the kitchen, but they were still happy to serve us. Efkharisto!

Central location, average food. The Schnitzel felt pre-made, gyros was fresh. The service depends on the waiter you get: the owner/chief of staff is extremely friendly, talkative and professional, the younger staff however rather unfriendly.

This place was excellent!! Once they knew you weren't trying to just use the restroom but were going to sit and eat, they were very friendly. The stuffed meatball (more like a cheese filled meat patty) blew my mind, it was so good!! We were all happy with our meals. And of course, in traditional Greek hospitality, a shot of ouzo for everyone to finish the meal.

From the moment we arrived, this hotel felt like something out of a movie. The design, both inside and out, is absolutely stunning, with incredible attention to detail that makes every corner feel special. It’s a place that truly captures beauty and charm in the most elegant way. The on-site restaurant is fantastic—delicious food at very reasonable prices. As a vegetarian, I was especially impressed by the great selection of options, and the portions are very generous. Customer service here is outstanding. We really liked the place and asked if there were seats outside. We were told no, only that there might be some in another area (though the answer wasn’t very clear). It turned out there were free tables inside, but the waitresses attended to a couple who arrived after us. We ended up waiting over an hour for our food, which was the biggest issue. That said, the food itself was excellent.

Day 3

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Gallows Gate. Not quite as popular as Medieval Crime Museum, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

Gallows Gate, also known as Galgentor, is a tower and gateway fortification dating back to around 1600 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This historic gate was part of the town's medieval fortifications and offers a viewing deck with stunning views over the old town. The name 'Gallows Gate' comes from its proximity to the gallows that once stood nearby.
Beautiful gate you can walk up the walls and walk around, would definitely recommend before entering the town. There is parking right outside with election vehicle charging.

A beautiful Historic place. It's worth visiting the small but elegant city.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a cute, little charming town stuck in the mideval times. You definitely have to take a stroll around the old wall and then walk through the little alleys and enjoy the architecture stuck in time. Specially during Xmas it's really amazing with the lights. I think this city looks amazing anytime if the year you visit.
Mary L — Google review
The entire city is walkable and filled with historical buildings and land marks. Plagues provide information on many of the buildings. Guided tours are available. Many shops and restaurants are scattered throughout.
You N — Google review
You can go up via the staircases to reach the top of the walls, but not all the way up to the top of the tower. From there, it's a really good starting point for a walk along the walls. And it's sheltered too, so it's perfect all times of the year.
Chung — Google review
Great sites and this part of town is definitely friendly for walking. There are lots of shops and things to do. If you are going here set aside a lot of time to get everything in
Sergeants S — Google review
This town is really beautiful, better explore the town by foot, just park your car outside the wall as there is big parking space along the wall.

Cafe Einzigartig, also known as Cafe Unique, is a charming spot in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany. This vintage cafe offers a cozy and whimsical atmosphere that feels like stepping into someone's living room. It's an ideal place for a hearty breakfast or a light lunch. The cafe is famous for its seasonal drink, the Grapefruit Lillet spritz.
This is a perfect little coffee shop in a perfect little town. The atmosphere is quite warm and pleasant and welcoming, every corner is perfectly decorated and cozy and you can even buy the “decoration” for home. We really had a good time and had an amazing coffee and crumble apple pie with vanilla custard - brilliant pairing… Absolutely recommended if you visit Rothenburg!!

The coffee was good and the cakes were also very nice. I liked the slices of cakes because they weren't very sweet.
Malina A — Google review
We've wanted to get here for a long time, but somehow we couldn't. The reason was that it was always crowded. But last weekend we somehow managed to get in. We ordered a second and third course and coffee. First they brought us coffee and dessert, and then 20 minutes later the second and third course. Guys, there's nothing supernatural about this, just serve in order: first salad, then the first course, then the second course, and then dessert. I advise the day manager to just work with the staff. Guys, if you want to get good coffee, then you just need to take it from someone who has already received a good rating, here on the site. I trust these ratings. You have a good machine, I specifically looked. Which means the coffee should be good. I deliberately leave a bad rating so that the manager will notice. By the way, the service staff has nothing to do with it, the staff tried. The day manager should just explain how to do this. Overall, a solid four and I will definitely give this rating in 2 weeks. A bad rating now is just to get the establishment's management to pay attention to it.

It was very packed and busy but the waitresses remained very friendly and helpful! Our lil one was super grateful to get the last piece of cheese cake that he was praying for! Our cakes and drinks were all very yummy! And it's sooo beautiful in here! Always trying to come whenever we are here in Rothenburg, but you don't always get lucky! 😉

Style before substance The cake was claggy and not so fresh. Breakfast Tea was good. Service slow. Staff busy talking to each other instead of dealing with customers.

Super cute and dainty place!!! They had a handful of vegan/vegetarian options which we really appreciated! We got the bread with 2 types or vegan spreads (both spreads were absolutely delicious), a vegan choco chip cookie, and a vegetarian onion cake! Everything we ordered (including the coffee) was really good! Waiting staff were really friendly and attentive too!! Would definitely go back to this cafe when we visit Rothenburg again ☺️👍🏻👍🏻

The dark chocolate Schneeballen I had is good. Not too sweet. It is made by cutting shortcrust pastry (Mürbeteig) into strips, weaving them into a ball, then deep-frying until golden brown and dusting with powdered sugar. It is crispy on the outside and crumbly on the inside, resembling a snowball—hence the name. This dessert is over 300 years old.

Very nice place that sells delicious bread and pastries. There is upstairs seating. You order your drinks and food in the shop downstairs. The food is then put in a small elevator and transported to the firts floor where the drinks are added and served. You can only pay with cash at this place.

After wandering around this tiny slice of storybook heaven, its time for the 🇩🇪 tradition of Kaffee und Kuchen (Married to a German, it is all about the beloved Kaffee und Kuchen🤣)My man had been unbelievably patient accompanying me to the morbid Medieval Criminal Museum for hours and with 4 tiers of exhibitions, its time to reward him with a little pick-me-up or else risk a meltdown!😂. You can't come to this quaint town and not have a Schneeballen, I did not get the traditional one that is usually beautifully dusted with sugar but the Nougat Creme caught my eye, I am naturally drawn to anything that looks chocolatey and rich, it is in my DNA. It was splendid and the generous square of Sauerkirsch Streuselkuchen deserves and honourable mention too. Order downstairs, enjoy them upstairs. Cash only. Service: We were warmly greeted and served.
Angelina C — Google review
Food was okay but nothing special. Cash only! No milk alternatives. We ordered half a litre of water, which was served in ONE glas, that's usually used at village festivals. Overall, the place is stuck in a past and not in a good way.
Ricarda — Google review
Nice atmosphere, cozy bakery. There are tables upstairs to enjoy your time there. I ordered an original Schneeball and that is good combined with a drink, because the taste of the original wasn't moist like a cake, for example. Schneeball was fresh, delicious and crispy. However, due to insufficient table assistance, I gave up waiting to do another order (long wait even to pay!). Staff wasn't friendly and looked a little bit annoyed. Good price. Next time I am gonna buy to take away.

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Romantik Hotel & Restaurant Markusturm offers a unique blend of history and comfort. Housed in a 13th-century toll house, this charming hotel is adorned with antiques that reflect its rich heritage. Guests can enjoy delightful meals at the wood-paneled restaurant or opt for room service during limited hours. The hotel boasts beautiful views from its terrace and garden, along with complimentary Wi-Fi to keep you connected.
An absolutely adorable place to stay. Staff is very helpful, accommodating and friendly. They have a great command of English as well. You can experience the history just by admiring their furniture and display. Down the hall on the second floor they had an old doll in a crib which creeped me out a bit but it adds well to the ambiance! They offer German-style breakfast with plentiful bread, cheese, salmon with fresh fruit. They also have a friendly cat that walks around greeting guests- so precious. Since we booked with an infant, they had a diaper pail, and a crib already set up, in addition to a baby bed. The hotel is right next to one of the towers so when you peek your head out the window (depending on which side of the building you got) you can observe its detail. Although we didn’t use this service, the morning of your check-out, they can bring your car, load the luggage and drive it back to the parking lot so you can spend the remaining time to explore the wondrous town. It is also located at a pretty central area that gives easy access to everything you’d like to see. We’d love to come back!

My Wife and I had a wonderful experience staying here in mid April 2025. Extremely pleasant staff that was very attentive. It is located in a great location that is a conveniently short walk to everywhere you'll want to go in this charming town. The restaurant at this hotel was incredible. Excellent food and service! Their staff was even kind enough to valet our car and retrieve it for us upon checkout which was greatly appreciated. We would recommend this hotel to anyone and would love to return one day!

Historical hotel that definitely complements the atmosphere of the old part of Rothenburg op der Tauber. This hotel locates in the most magnificent part, where everything is shrouded in history and centuries of various events. It is incredibly convenient that in a 5-minute walk you can park your car in the hotel parking area (but do not expect to see beautiful parking markings and smooth asphalt, park randomly on the surface covered with rubble and grass among the ruins of ancient walls 🤭). But in any case, it is closer and better than city parking outside the old town. The administrator at the reception - a wonderful nice woman, allowed us to choose the room ourselves and willingly advised which walking route is better to choose. Spooky creaky stairs, parts of stone walls and old pieces of furniture add magic entourage to the hotel. But our room was furnished more or less modernly. It was at the top floor and there was very hot (in June) despite it was a fan above the bed. The only disappointing thing was the tiny narrow blankets that were difficult for an adult tall person to cover himself. But also blankets smelled very bad, as if they had been used since the construction of the hotel 🤣 For my opinion prices per night for such kind of rooms are in a way too high, but of course you pay not for comfort but for location. Do not expect the self grabbing buffet for breakfast, the waiter will bring you everything in tiny portions, but I think that the 2nd portion should not be a problem if required. Breakfast costs only 10EUR/person. In general, I have a good impression of the hotel and very friendly staff. But if you are a city dweller accustomed to comfort, I think you should look for a more modern hotel with all the amenities.

We had a fantastic stay here. The staff are friendly and seem very happy to be working here; always a great sign. The hotel feels family-run. You pay for the location, which is absolutely magical. Rooms are beautiful; modern with some antique pieces. We had a deluxe family room for four of us with a spacious bathroom and changing area. Breakfast is only 10e per person and they were well-able to accommodate our child's food restrictions. The children loved having hot chocolate and waffles for breakfast. We also enjoyed the large chess set at reception.

Large rooms. Great location . Friendly and professional staff. But it’s the quality of the food and dining experience that sets the Markusturm apart from the other fine restaurants we ate at during our visit to Rothenburg . Besides an exquisite consommé (which was perfectly clear, flavorful, and had small, light dumplings), my duck breast was cooked perfectly with a light balsamic honey glaze. The menu changes with the season, but the care and quality of execution remains at the top. Don’t miss it.

Very nice hotel.  The staff were exceptionally nice and friendly.  It's in a great location to walk to everything in old Town.  Our room was great, large, good size bathroom.  As we have experienced several times on this trip,  there is NO elevator.   We were lucky the hotel had a colleague who took our bags up and back down for us.  The Wi-Fi was only so-so in the rooms, but was good down in the lobby.  Breakfast was our only disappointment.   Having been used to a buffet where you can choose what you want,  they were set up a bit differently.   They had bread on the tables  as well as juice and condiments.   We could order an egg any way we wanted it.  They brought out a tray with salami, Parma ham, 1 slice boiled ham, 1 slice of cheese, packaged cheeses, 1 mandarin orange and some grapes and a plate of smoked salmon.  We were free to pick up yogurt with a little granola/ fruit on top.  We don't eat much of what they brought out, and we hate wasting the food.   We didn't want to make a fuss so thank goodness for the peanut butter that we never leave home without.  It was very good on one of their rolls.  They do have a restaurant for dinner but we did not eat there.  It was a great hotel and would highly recommend staying there.  Loved Rothenburg as well!

Gerlachschmiede is a charming and quirky building in the medieval town of Rothenburg. Once a forge and home to the local blacksmith, this curvy corner house adorned with colorful window boxes dates back to 1469. It's visible from the Tower Trail's covered walkway and is just a short walk away from Rodertor.
Totally unique and incredibly beautiful house that has different charms when viewed from the city walls and the ground. When the sun touches it it looks like the house came out right out of a fairytale! I got to take a closer look at the details from the ground - they are simply gorgeous. Crowded even when it was half empty, but a nice place to stop. The coffee was good, and the chocolate dessert was VERY good. There’s a bar with breads that I think is for everyone, and the bread was terrific. Very glutinous No obvious English-speaking staff, but they made ordering easy. Thanks!

Nestled in the heart of Rothenburg, Hotel & Restaurant Reichsküchenmeister is a charming family-run establishment that perfectly blends history with modern comfort. This delightful hotel features well-appointed rooms adorned with vintage flair, offering guests a spacious retreat unlike typical European accommodations. The property underwent renovations in 2015, enhancing its appeal while maintaining its historic essence. Guests can indulge in complimentary Wi-Fi and breakfast each morning before exploring the picturesque surroundings.
I had a truly pleasant stay at this hotel in Rothenburg. The room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable, and the meals were delicious and thoughtfully prepared. I also really appreciated the clean and relaxing sauna facilities, which were a great way to unwind after a day of walking. One small inconvenience was that there were no umbrellas available for guests on a rainy day, which made getting around a bit tricky. It would have been nice to have a few umbrellas at the front desk for guest use. This time, I stayed in a separate building, not the main one—I’m not sure if it’s officially called the annex, but it was also very clean, modern, and had an elevator, which was convenient. Everything felt well-maintained and peaceful. I’d definitely love to stay here again on my next visit to Rothenburg, and next time, I hope to try a room in the main building as well.

Fantastic hotel! So pretty and quaint in a lovely town, very near the main square. I wish we could have stayed longer than one night. I highly recommend staying here.

I had a lovely 2 night stay! The room was comfortable and i love the windows that open! The gentleman that assisted with car parking and my bags was great! Breakfast was tasty with a decent selection. Parking add 18€, if you want the ac turned on it’s 5€ per day. Also to note the hotel is right in the heart of the walled town so there is some noise outside, the windows block out a lot but if you’re extra sensitive keep note.

Great overall experience. The deluxe rooms are spacious and beautiful. The restaurant is excellent. Only negative is that the Weinstube was used as overflow for the restaurant and therefore we were denied entry when we just wanted to enjoy a bottle of wine. I have never been told that we have to eat a meal to enjoy a bottle of wine in a Weinstube.

This lovely old hotel in the heart of Rothenburg is just fabulous. Great service, great breakfast, easy walk to everything. And a spa that was worth the price of the room by itself. I couldn’t be happier with my choice. I will be back.

The Hotel is located near the center of the old town. Parking is located about 200 meters away and a shuttle is provided. The room was quite small and doesn't allow staying for more than couple of days. Breakfast buffet was good with lots of variety.

We didn’t stay at the hotel, but visited the restaurant for dinner- and we’re glad we did!! It was a busy midweek evening in early June, but they kindly managed to fit us in after we popped by (we’d only called to book about two hours before). Everything was excellent: the service, the food, the ambiance. They even welcomed our small dog to dine with us inside, which was a ideal for a nice restaurant. The highlight was the white asparagus soup, absolutely delicious. But everything else was too, as was the wine recommendations we asked the watier for. Thanks again to the team. We’d highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for a special meal in Rothenburg.

Highly recommended. Very friendly service and great food! Prices are fair for the quality and there is a lot of variety. They even sang a song for my mother’s birthday! Will visit again! One thing I would recommend is perhaps some bread and olive oil as people wait for food.

From the moment we walked in, we felt warmly welcomed. The atmosphere at Restaurant Michelangelo is charming and elegant without being pretentious — a perfect blend of comfort and class. The food was absolutely outstanding. Every dish we tried was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor — clearly prepared with care and fresh ingredients. You can taste the passion in the cooking. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the sauces rich and balanced, and the dessert? Simply unforgettable. Equally impressive was the service — attentive, friendly, and genuinely hospitable. The staff made us feel like honored guests rather than just customers. If you're in Rothenburg, this place is a must. We left full, happy, and already talking about when we’ll be back. Grazie mille to the entire team!

I’d say best food in town. Decent food, me and my wife enjoy it very much. However the serving time takes quite long and we only have 50mins because we did not reserve a table. People are coming in at 6pm. So i gotta finish everything in 30mins because it took long time for them to prepare. Nice food anyways!

Stopped in Rothenburg, during our road trip from Germany to Italy and back and had dinner at this restaurant, and honestly it was one of the most disappointing Italian meals we had on the trip. The place was overcrowded, which we thought was a sign of quality, but the food told a very different story. What was advertised as “authentic Italian” turned out to be mediocre at best — bland flavours, average presentation, and nothing that stood out. Even the drinks were disappointing — I ordered a beer and it came with a lemon wedge I never asked for (and hated). For the prices charged, the quality just didn’t match up. If you’re looking for real Italian food, this is not the place. Such a disappointment.

Eiscafé-Pizzeria Roma is a charming eatery located in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. The restaurant offers a delightful dining experience with its relaxed interiors and outdoor seating on a cobbled sidewalk. It's an ideal spot for those seeking an alternative to traditional German cuisine, serving up a delectable variety of pizza and pasta dishes. Guests have praised the establishment for its efficient service and delicious food, particularly highlighting the flavorful pasta options at affordable prices.
Chose the highest rating Italian restaurant in Rotenburg, it was really nice restaurant indeed. The pasta of the chef recommended with mushroom / prawns was EPIC! Salmon pasta was nice, and my whole family enjoyed the seafood pizza~ environment was cozy and each person was around 17-18euros. Oh, and I LOVE my hot cocoa 😍👌

Great food. The service is quite slow on Saturday 3pm. Otherwise a decent place to have some Italian food. Pasta portions are quite big so maybe consider having half of it. Also a good idea to get a reservation as some tables were reserved when we arrived and had to wait a bit to be seated.

Highly recommend visiting Eiscafé Pizzeria! All of the food was absolutely delicious and the portion sizes were perfect. The pastas are offered in ful and half sizes. Pizzas can easily be shared between two people if they’re not super hungry. Also, the bathrooms were very clean and nice sized - which is great. The ravioli bolognese is absolutely worth trying. The Hawaiian pizza was sweet but very good.

Cosimo was a fantastic waiter and helped guide us with menu selections. There were plenty of vegetarian options for me and steak options for the hubby. The food was delicious fresh vegetables with lots of flavor and brightness. Highly recommend this authentic food and the welcoming hospitality.

Could not get the attention of a server for the life of me. To top it off, there was a larva in my salad, and when I got a server's attention, she said, "It's because it's so fresh!" ...... Unbelievable.

We went here twice while staying in the town. First time we had bruchesca and pizza which was superb. My friend had his birthday and we searched the town for a special meal, but in the end we thought this was so good we'd go there again. The second day was shared antipasti, steak and a pasta. The Argentinan steak was so perfectly cooked I doubt anyone anywhere could have cooked it better, it was so succulent. The staff were so attentive, engaging and chatty it made for a great atmosphere on both occasions. It felt like you were eating with family. Loved this place and the meal made made my friends birthday just that bit more special. Thanks to all the team there.

This restaurant is a real gem! We live in Germany for more than 10 years, and I must admit is very difficult to find a proper Italian restaurant. Well, this is definitely one exception! The food was simply amazing, the people friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant itself seems just taken from an old Fellini's movie. Absolutely 5 stars.

Spital Gate, also known as Spitalbastei, is a unique and friendly gate in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Its figure-eight shape and the inscription "Pax intrantibus, salus exeuntibus" welcome visitors with peace and salvation. The gate is part of the fortified walls of Rothenburg and offers a picturesque ensemble at its entrance called Plonlein. Visitors can walk inside the walls from the western end and explore the town's fortifications.
Very neat historical fortress structure. Impressive construction. Free to enter and explore.

A very interesting area, well maintained. Lots to see, the inside is dim, and you can walk through to see the roof vaulting and the cannon. The coverd walkway is my favorite part.

There is a very nice trip you can take on the castle walls that you can start from there, you get a nice view but the path is pretty narrow, would recommand it to anyone who just want to walk and see the city

Fantastic historical entrance to Rothenburg, with a massive gate and tower; there's a hidden staircase that allows you to get onto the 2nd and 3rd level's of the tower to explore how the wall used to be fortified.

Well preserved castle walls. For me it was interesting to see what is inside the wall - place for guns, carriages. Sadly I was tired to climb the tower. Has a little park between walls.

Located in the picturesque Taubertal, the Wildbad Evangelical Conference Center offers a peaceful retreat by the river. The historic spa complex resembles a fairytale castle and hosts conferences, concerts, and art exhibitions. Nearby, the Double Bridge marks an old trade route and is a great spot to watch the Torchlight Parade. This landmark provides a beautiful view of nature and the city, making it perfect for relaxation and contemplation.
A must see! The short hike down was easy and quite lovely. Beautiful trees and a marvellous running stream was a treat! A picturesque view of the double bridge is definitely worth the hike down, just outside the walled city.

It is bit far from Rothenburg, but it is worth it. I walked from Spital gate and it took about half an hour to get here. The bridge looks solid with double arched shape.

Feels like went back in medieval time. Worth visiting this place
Akash D — Google review
So, I wanted to see the river Tauber, a slight disappointment on that front as it looked more like a creek, and it turns a bend there, however, it lead me to this double bridge that’s a bit out of the way, around the corner so to speak, with very few people around if any. It’s located in the gorgeous valley the town overlooks from all sides, it’s the scenery of a breathtaking guest house there as well! It’s a valley so expect steep walks and of course a climb to get back, views and the greenery on the way is also so worth it.
Nada Z — Google review
Is just a bridge. The "double" part is a misnomer. It is an interesting bridge but it is mainly the area that is very pretty. Even if this brige is not to die for. I highely recommend doing a walk down and through this orchard valley. You can access it from mulitple points but if you leave out the castle gardens then you can go down pass the toppel house along the road, across the bridge and then back up to castle gardens. Its a nice easy work and will give you great feel of the farmland and valley.

Hans Georg Baumgartner, The Night Watchman

4.9
(309)
Tour agency
In Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the most memorable experiences is joining Hans Georg Baumgartner, also known as The Night Watchman, on his lantern-lit tours through the old town. From mid-March to December, he leads groups at 8pm in English and 9:30pm in German. The tour is family-friendly and offers a glimpse into medieval life with its historical anecdotes.
Top notch show that tours the city! 1 hour in length and costs $9 euro (as of 9/24). I can’t think of a better tour for the money I’ve ever been on and it was the highlight of the city. The night watchman stays in roll the whole time. Think about it as a one man play where the audience travels along throughout the city. It’s not a Q&A tour so save your stupid questions and let him do his thing. He is funny as hell and will give you answers to questions you wouldn’t know to ask. You pay at the end on an honor system which skips the formality of many tours and time. Dude makes bank, make no mistake, and you could stiff him, but don’t be that person. Appreciate that you don’t spend 15 minutes collecting money and policing the group.
Brandon V — Google review
Highly recommended. If you have the time, join the tour. One can learn much more about the city and visit hidden corners at darkness which makes the experience more charming.
Sandra R — Google review
First off, please stay a night in Rothenburg. It makes a big difference to your experience. This is a town worth savoring. We took the 8pm tour. What an awesome experience. We are normally not in tours as we like to build our own experience. This tour is absolutely worth it. Ours lasted about an hour. Our guide was very funny, knowledgeable and very friendly. We walked around city to 4 or 5 stops where he told us stories and facts about the city. Best of all was to learn about this ancient city that once was the 3rd largest in Germany and also very rich. All while enjoying a warm glass of wine from nearby vendor. Grab yours and do this tour!

Loved this tour! After sightseeing all day, our kids weren’t very keen on heading back out but obliged me and they were so happy that they did. All of our kids remarked that it was their favourite tour. The tour guide was funny, knowledgeable and engaging. You won’t be disappointed; it is a one of a kind experience and will be a wonderful part of your trip.

We stayed two nights in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and did the nightswatchman tour the second night. Our tour guide Harry was an absolute joy. He made our tour very entertaining and made us completely forget that it was pouring rain at the time. I highly recommend staying the night in town and doing this tour. This is one of the best upkept midevil cities in the world and it is all due to the fantastic residents like Harry.

Fabulous tour! Funny and our watchman did a great job with a large group, moved quickly but waited for slower members and spoke loudly so we could all hear. Big shoutout to our apprentice watchman, Brian! You were such a good sport and you can even sing in German! Huzzah!

This was one great tour and I recommend it to everyone who goes to Rothenburg. Our night watchmen were Mr Harry. He was very funny, and knew lots and lots of facts about Rothenburg. Honestly, it didn't feel like it was an hour long tour. Loved every bit of it.

Town Hall Tower

4.6
(227)
Historical landmark
The Town Hall Tower, a significant part of Rothenburg's defenses over the centuries, stands tall at the city's center. Its main function was to watch for fires and communicate with the city wall watchtowers. The tower offers stunning views after climbing 241 steps to reach its summit. Adjacent to it is the Old Town Hall, a Gothic-style building completed with a Renaissance structure in 1578. Exploring this area also leads to St.
Strongly recommended. For a small fee of 2.5€ you get to know the entire architecture of this medieval town. If you are able to climb all the way to the top, then an absolutely beautiful view of this gorgeous town waits for you. You can get the 360 degree view of Rothenburg, the way the city wall runs through the edge of the city, the different watch towers and churches, which I would say that everyone must experience. It is amazing to see how the city wall was laid out which still runs through the city. The climb is a challenge because, the stairs gets narrower and steeper as you move up but the panorama is absolutely worth it.
Animesh K — Google review
entrance 4€ and you pay at the top floor. you pass the gothic design stairs and then wooden steep one till you reach upper floor with immigration stories and then you wait at the desk on top till the roof is clear. here the tricky part you have to go up and down on narrow ladder and above you get the 360 view.
David A — Google review
Toss up between this & the Roderturm for a high up view of the town. Entrance 4 euros & you pay on the floor just below the outdoor balcony. Hatch to access the roof level could be a little challenging if you aren’t agile, see pic.
Toxteth G — Google review
Nice and easy climb. The view from the top is pretty good! And you can also see stork bird nests from the top! Tip by the “tower lady” who also gives you tickets for the top
Omer A — Google review
Definitely worth the long climb up. It was a super fun experience just to climb all the steep stairs and narrow passageways, and an even cooler view of the town and surrounding area.
Reagan L — Google review
Best view of the town!! 200 steps but fun!! Steep though
Don D — Google review
Don’t miss this spot if you want to see the medieval town from above! For only 2,5 euros you get a stunning panorama and a lot of adrenaline by walking on the narrow and steep stairs, making it definitely worth it!
Sonia S — Google review
Our tourist brochures and the information online all said the tower is open on Monday. I saved my climb until today (Monday) knowing the weather would be better than yesterday. I couldn't believe it was closed. No explanation, no apology. I leave tomorrow morning and am not in a position to be returning here whenever I want. Really disappointing.

Nestled in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Rothenburg Town History Museum offers a captivating glimpse into the town's storied past, particularly during the tumultuous Thirty Years' War. This medieval gem, with roots tracing back to the 10th century and a rich history marked by its strategic castle overlooking the River Tauber, flourished under notable leaders like burgomaster Heinrich Toppler.
In this Museum you will see almost everything about Rothenburg Town History, I especially interested in the dungeons part.

Small but interesting museum that focusses on the 30 year war from 1618 to 1648 that was mainly about religion, catholics vs protestants. There is a lot on display, mainly about the military actions and how the town was saved when the mayor drank a Master's tankard with 3,25 liters in one go. In the dungeon there are three prison cells and various torture tools

Käthe Wohlfahrt – Christkindlmarkt is a German company that organizes Christmas markets in Germany and other European countries. These markets offer a wide range of traditional Christmas decorations, gifts, and food. Visitors can explore handcrafted items like nutcrackers, incense smokers, and Christmas pyramids. The market in Bavaria is particularly charming with its medieval walls. It's known for offering an extensive selection of ornaments and gifts.
Kathe Wohlfahrt Christkindlmarkt is a Christmas store wonderland. It was a fantastic shop to explore in the lovely town of Rothenburg ob det Tauber. My wife loves Christmas and she was in absolute heaven. The store is massive and is beautifully decorated with mechanical toy displays, huge storefront market sets, decorated trees and scads of Christmas lights. Make sure that you have lots of time, as there is so much to see. They also have cuckoo clocks, steins and souvenirs. There is also a lovely red, antique, Christmas truck in front of the store. Lots of great photo opportunities here.

Exquisite Christmas items made with an eye for the enchanted feeling of the holidays. The craftsmanship and quality is first-rate; demonstrated by our annual display of a large advent house that is 55-years old and remains ever so unique. This heirloom was graciously given to my mother for working with Wilhelm at military/charity bazaars in the early 70s. We also have a 3-foot solid wooden nutcracker that has awed both children and adults at Christmas parties through the years. Truly one-of-a-kind Christmas decorations made by a special family owned company. Thank you for creating the memories!

Nestled in the charming town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Baumeisterhaus is a delightful restaurant that beautifully embodies the architectural splendor of the Renaissance era. Originally a master builder's residence, its intricately carved facade tells stories of prosperity and cultural richness from centuries past. As you step inside, you're greeted by a lively atmosphere filled with fellow travelers eager to savor regional cuisine.
I was prepared for a mediocre review… however! We had an exceptional time. They close a bit earlier than some might expect, but we seated right away during the busiest time of year! Our server, young man, was exceptional! He was very responsive and polite. Had the deer ghoulash and fish, a salad, and child schnitzel, beer and Schnaps after dinner. Everything was very good! The ghoulash was on a bed of spatzle - and the gravy was delicious. No room for dessert unfortunately - they looked great though. Exceptional.

This restaurant is nothing but a tourist trap. The food was extremely disappointing — the meat was so dry it was almost impossible to chew, and the flavor was bland and unpleasant. Clearly, they rely on location and tourists instead of quality. Definitely not worth the money or the time. I do not recommend this place at all.
Amelia L — Google review
We had a great experience at Baumeisterhaus. The service was warm and attentive, ambiance was good, and the food was great too. I'm puzzled by the poor reviews - give this place a shot if you're in Rothenburg! We had the Franconian roasted sausage with asparagus (spargle) as it was in season, and the Maultasche. The Riesling complimented the meal nicely.
Sharyl W — Google review
We had pork knuckle, the skin was a bit chewy. Dark beer was so smooth, not bitter.

Service was wonderful and the fastest I have seen in Germany. Probably due to eating early as we arrived around 1800. Food was good quality and generous portions. 2 jaegerschnitzel, cheese spaetzel and one kids schnitzel was good for 2 adults and 3 kids. The server reduced our order saying we originally ordered to much and she was right. We will definitely return on the next trip to Rothenburg!

Hostel Rothenburg ob der Tauber offers a mix of dorms and private rooms, with a complimentary breakfast buffet and a pool table for guests to enjoy. Situated in an old mill, it's conveniently located just a 10-minute walk from both the train station and the town center. While not overly lavish in amenities, the hostel provides free breakfast - a rare find in many German hostels.
I booked a shared room. Room was cleaner than expected. Bed was comfortable. Staffs speak English well. Wifi was satisfactory. Breakfast was included. It was the best part, they have lots of varieties for breakfast. Things to note: People who aren’t members of Hostel International, need to pay a bit extra cost with the rent. Check in counter is not always open, so if you’re coming at night, then please contact early. Things to improve: lack of power outlet in the room, and toilets are bit smaller for many people. Will I recommend it? Yes.
Abrar A — Google review
Stayed in the second building with a school group of 26, and for lack of a better term, it was apalling. There was no air conditioning and it was extremely hot; we had to keep the windows open and there were many loud people outside. There were also people running around and screaming in the halls at night, and it is very echo-ey so that woke us all up. The doors to the rooms were extremely finnicky and the wood they were made of seemed to be rotting; someone could have easily kicked in the door. The showers and bathroom smelled terrible, and there was mold in the showers. The showers were not at all private - there was a huge open window into them. The showers didn't have any sort of shower head, it was legitimately just a spout that, if you even barely turned on, blasted a painful jet of water at you. A group of boys in our group had an insect infestation in their room (they hadn't opened any windows, there were just bugs crawling through them). There were 50+ insects in each of the beds, under the pillows, on the floor and flying around. There was no one at the front desk and we couldn't reach anyone by the number listed, so we ended up rearranging rooms and some of the boys left to sleep in a hotel for the night. The common areas are also very creepy and deserted. The common area kn our building was the only place with WLAN and air conditioning, and there was an abandoned reception desk, a small coffee table and two worn, stained couches as well as another room with abandoned game tables and nothing to play them with (i.e. pool, ping pong, etc.). Overall for such a high price this place is absolutely terrible. Don't stay here, you'll be much happier if you spend your money and time somewhere else.

One of the worst hostels I ever stayed at. The prices they charge are insane and there are plenty of hotels in the city that are cheaper! For €75 a night I'd expect an excellent, top notch hostel. But instead it's a low quality place, that smells terrible. Wifi only works in common rooms and even there hardly. Just googling the weather forecast was already a challenge. The rooms only have 1 plug for the entire room, so not a chance you'll be able to charge anything. Breakfast is incredably basic and on top of everything, they charge you an extra €4.50 a night if you're not a member of their chain. This is, of course, not mentioned up front. I highly regret spending money on this place instead of a nice hotel and wouldn't recommend it to anybody. For €35 it would have been acceptable, but for this price it's absolutely terrible.

Absolutely disastrous stay. We booked a twin room with private bathroom, then the staff told us that our room is not in the main building, but 20m away from it. The second building is quite old and there were many disgusting insects in the room. There was no wifi in the room, which is promised by the hostel. Pillows are uncomfortable. And it can get very hot in the summer since there is no air con and fan. DO NOT STAY HERE.

Beautiful outside with a well kept inside. The breakfasts are nice, and the lounge is modern and clean. The bathrooms are very clean as well. One issue: the motion sensitive lights in the showers and bathrooms turn off too fast. Showering and using the bathroom in the dark is quite difficult. The staff did speak English and the food was great.

Insane price for the worst hostel experience ever. Just pay a little more to avoid this place, you will enjoy rothenburg much more. Trust me, it was so bad that I changed to another accommodation after 1 night. Room is not clean and not comfortable, no Internet, noisy at night.

This place is amazing. It was a short walk from the station and an even shorter walk from the main shops. The rooms were clean and well kept. The beds were nice and we were given fresh linens the moment we arrived. WiFi was free and made researching future activities that much easier. The staff spoke English and were very helpful. The showers were amazing the water pressure and heat were awesome. The breakfast was wonderful, plenty of options for beverages and food. This place is definitely a five star.

Beds and bathrooms were very clean and beds were comfortable. Lockers were in the room to store luggage safely. Large and free breakfast was very good. Laudry room and game room. Very comfortable atmosphere and within walking distance to the main drag of town.
