Parque Terra Nostra, located in Furnas Valley, is a historic garden and botanical paradise dating back to 1775. The park is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and thermal baths, offering visitors a serene and rejuvenating experience. The lush greenery and expansive grounds make it easy to lose yourself in the natural beauty of the surroundings. The park also features a small lake with a cave where visitors can sit back and marvel at the wonders of nature.
A Truly Magical Experience at Terra Nostra Garden Visiting Terra Nostra Garden was one of the highlights of my trip to the Azores. The garden is absolutely stunning – a perfect blend of natural beauty, botanical diversity, and peaceful ambiance. Every path leads to a new discovery, whether it's a centuries-old tree, a quiet pond, or a vibrant collection of flowers from around the world. The thermal pool is a unique experience on its own. The warm, iron-rich waters are incredibly relaxing and surrounded by lush greenery, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The facilities are well-maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Very bad experience at Terra Nostra. Almost €35 for two people for such mediocre services—I've never seen anything like it anywhere else. We arrived in the early afternoon after ordering two “1-day” tickets online. Why can't you buy tickets for just half a day? Then we took a tour of the park, which is indeed magnificent. We decided to finish with the baths. That's when our afternoon turned into a real disappointment (we had driven almost an hour for this...). It was impossible to unlock the lockers in the changing rooms, if you can call them that, as there were no cubicles or privacy, so you had to change in front of everyone. We tried for a long time with our two phones. We decided to give up so we could still have time to bathe, leaving our belongings to one side, and then, surprise... we were told that the park was closing at 4:30 p.m. Why wasn't this mentioned in the reservation summary email or on the tickets? So we weren't able to enjoy the baths. In conclusion, give this place a miss. They try to be fancy, but the quality of service doesn't match. There are other baths that are much cheaper, much prettier, and have longer opening hours, such as Caldeira Velha, which we went to the next day and which are much more worthwhile.
Fanny C — Google review
Botanical lush gardens and amazing iron rich hot pools. We luckily arrived early to enjoy the hot pools. It was a magical experience. Everything was heavenly apart from the locker awful system they have that costs 5€ and depends on your phone being sufficiently charged:-( the changing rooms were not comfortable and the shower was cold which was odd considering the high temperatures of the hotspring pools. That said, I would clearly recommend and come back.
Elsa H — Google review
The garden is layed up very smart in different sections with themes. Views, atmosphere and the feeling in park is great. Remember to reserve enough time as the park is not small and to see all some distance needs to be walked. Additional time is needed for the thermal bath that is included in the entrance fee. The one central pool is just ca. 1 m deep. Water temperature is pleasant around 35 C degrees. Lockers for clothes cost 5€ extra and the reservation/payment system is a catastrophe.
Erkki S — Google review
Beautiful place with nice thermal pools and a lush garden of exotic species. If you book tickets in advance and come to the park having already put your swimsuit on (and swimming shoes), you will save extra time as you won't need to go through the changing rooms. You can get changed and store your stuff under one of the benches surrounding the main pool. Don't forget to take a shower before and after bathing. The little pools near the main pool are smaller but cozier, with the water being much warmer. I would recommend those over the main pool. Don't forget to take a small bag to store your wet swimsuit and towel. The park has all the necessary amenities, such as showers, toilets and lockers. After the bath, you can stroll around the park. I would recommend taking a picture of the map at the entrance so that you can follow it closely when visiting the gardens and not miss anything. Enjoy!
Lucas O — Google review
October low season was a perfect time to visit, with plenty of room in the thermal pools. We didn't find the main thermal pool to be that warm, and opted to use the smaller pools, which was significantly warmer. The overall park was truly a sight. I'm sure even more beautiful in the summer months, when the flowers are in bloom. Parking: There is no parking past the gate. Find free parking on the streets. Fees: Entry fee and locker fee. Change Room + Locker: 5 Euro for the QR activated lockers. I was worried after reading all of the reviews of people having so much trouble with paying online. I had data service, so I had no issues paying online and receiving my locker code. You need your phone with you to open and close the locker. So you'll have to keep an eye on your belongings when you go to the pools. I watched as a group of girls attempted to pick-pocket my jacket that was hanging with my towel. There are also no private change rooms in the women's locker. There is a shower area and toilet stalls (where people ended up changing in).
Adrienne T — Google review
Beautiful, tranquil, yet close to many activities such as the calderas & c nter of town. The thermal bath on last cation is an amazing place to relax & wind down. The bar on property serves excellent drink like a smoking Boulevardier. This was a perfect get away I highly recommend!

Very nice hotel and general accommodations. Nice park in the area with the natural Springs. The only negative is that its remoteness makes it hard to do things like tourist shopping, and limited restaurant choices. Overall great experience.

Visiting the hot geysers in the Azores was an unforgettable experience! The sight of the steam rising from the earth, surrounded by lush greenery, feels almost otherworldly. The natural beauty of the area combined with the unique geothermal activity creates a truly mesmerizing atmosphere. You can even feel the warmth from the geysers as you walk around, adding to the magic of the experience. It’s a perfect spot for nature lovers and anyone looking to explore something different. Definitely a must-visit if you're in the Azores!

Super fun, small museum about micro-organisms! Admission is €2.50 for adults, €1.50 for seniors and students, and free for people with disabilities. Payment is cash only. Despite my background in studying micro-organisms, I still learned some new things. The museum is interesting for both adults and children. There are all sorts of interactive features, such as a VR headset that lets you explore the inside of a bacterium, and various touchscreens and iPads with fun information and games. We spent about half an hour to forty-five minutes there and really read and tried everything. If you move through a bit faster, you’ll probably be done sooner. At the end, I bought a cool bag with the text: “You can’t B.cereus!” – highly recommended! The staff were also very friendly. They even prepared a new microscope slide just for us, so we could get an even better look at the bacteria!

Intriguing place! I really like that this place is very well preserved. There's a nice park around where you can enjoy ice cream while watching the water boiling. Occasionally a bit smelly but still very cool place!

Small science research center which has a lot of information on bacteria and micro organisms that live in the hot springs. Cost €1.50 per adult to go into the science centre. We had a guided tour from one of the researchers for free which was fascinating and then got to have a look around the rest of the exhibit. It's only small but really interesting and the guide was very engaging. Definitely worth the €1.50 go inside.

Great stop to see natural hot springs in action. The museum was closed when we were there but a walk around the springs which are free to tour, are worth the stop.

(Translated by Google) Attention Spaniards 🇪🇸👇🏻 ✅ Positive aspects: It's right in the center of Furnas and is one of those churches that, without being very touristy, is well worth a stop. It has a white facade with dark stone details that make it very photogenic, and inside it's much larger than it appears from the outside. It's very peaceful, with beautiful stained-glass windows and hidden corners like the baptismal area or the confessionals embedded in the wall. If you're around the lake or strolling through the center, this is a stop that adds a lot to your visit. ❌ Negative aspects: It's not always open, so you may only see it from the outside. Also, it's not very well signposted, so if you don't go looking for it, you might not even realize it's there. 🌐 Overall rating: A very beautiful church that adds a unique touch to your walk through Furnas. It doesn't take long to see and is worth stopping for a few minutes if you're in the area.

Park
Parque da Grená, located in Sao Miguel, is a stunning nature park with five kilometers of paths through an 18-hectare wooded area. The park offers a variety of activities such as canoeing, biking, and family strolls amidst diverse plant life and incredible landscapes with historical significance. Visitors can explore the Salto da Inglensa waterfall at the top of the slope and climb 633 steps to reach a viewpoint overlooking the waterfall and valley.
Beautiful park to have a walk or go explore the waterfalls. Paths are with multiple difficulties and the scenes are amazing. You can also have a nice picnic inside. Entrance is 10 euro per person. Parking fee is 3 euro per person. If you want free parking you can find on the other side of the lake and walk around 1h until here
Razvan — Google review
A wonderful trip, it truly feels like stepping into Jurassic Park. The entire route is flawlessly prepared, with walkways, staircases, and clearly marked paths. The climb to the final waterfall is quite challenging (600 steps), but it’s manageable for adults. The area is well-developed, yet it still retains the soul and raw beauty of the place. There is also the option to relax in a jacuzzi or soak in warm water tubs located on-site.
Szymon S — Google review
It is a wonderful place - must see! 10 EUR per person for entrance - worth it! The park is more hiking then just walking but the trails are very well prepared. The main waterfall may not have as much water falling but the views and nature surrounding it compensate it fully. You can swim in waterfall pond number 6 - beware water far from hot, it’s probably around 15’ Celsius (good change vs. Hot baths in the bottom of the park). If you prefer not to take the full trail and focus around waterfalls and canyon itself - which is enough due to over 600 steps to the main waterfall you can cut the trail down to north side following points 1, 2, and 6 on the way down to experience it fully.
Maciej K — Google review
At first we were surprised that entering the park required a fee. By the time we finished our visit, we felt the payment was absolutely worth it. The park is very well maintained, easy to walk and navigate, with many interesting spots, and you can easily spend two hours there. At the end of the trail, a surprise was waiting for us, we discovered two hot tubs for 2–4 people with a changing room, perfect!

Amazing park, you must visit. The entrance fee per adults was 10 eur. The ticket machine wasn't working at the time of my visit to the park. So I bought a ticket at the near bar. In the park you have a lot to see, also you can walk in a circular path. There are different waterfalls, tons of greenery, also you can see live animals (rabbits, pigs, etc.). I recommend walking shoes, since you will have to walk all the time on the forest terrain and some parts can get pretty steepy very fast.
Marko I — Google review
A beautiful and refreshing nature escape Parque de Greta is a must-visit for nature lovers. The park offers a variety of scenic hiking trails where you can explore lush forests, walk alongside rivers, and discover stunning waterfalls tucked into the landscape. It’s a peaceful and immersive experience—perfect for a half-day adventure. Walking under the tree canopy and listening to the sound of running water makes you feel completely connected to nature. Everything is well maintained, and the views are just magical. The only downside was the woman at the bar near the ticket area, who was unexpectedly rude and unwelcoming. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it was a sharp contrast to the overall warmth of the park itself. Still, the natural beauty more than makes up for it. Highly recommended!

Restaurante Vale Das Furnas (Parque De Campismo) is a highly recommended dining spot in Furnas, known for its delicious stew and traditional Azorean sweet, Bolos Levedos. Unlike the crowded touristy restaurants, this place offers a more authentic and satisfying experience. Visitors praise the tasty food, generous portions, reasonable prices, and friendly service. Despite being busy, the staff handles large parties with grace and professionalism.
What a unique experience! We were pretty excited to go eat a cozido. We didn't make a reservation, but there was enough food to accommodate us - we went for dinner a Monday night. The place was a recommandation, and it did not disappoint. The cozido was very fragrant and tasty. Take one plate for two, they make big plates! The bread (delicious) basket is also big! We also took the simple salad, that came without dressing whatsoever. I found out after that we could have asked for oil and vinegar 😊

We called and made a reservation for corzido around noon, though I'd recommend doing so 24 hours prior Serving staff completely ignored us at first, but once we had stood around for long enough, we were seated. Bit more of a culture thing, I think, coming from a professional kitchen myself. We ordered corzido for two, and my father ordered a soup of day with bread as well. Drinks took a bit to arrive, but after that, food was timely. Corzido was brought out first, a heaping portion, and when asked wgere our soup was, the server admitted he forgot, and brought it, then we asked for tge bread and hed forgotten it too. He was absolutely charming and sweet, I really enjoyed his easy smile and honesty, and it was a fond, fun experience, no trouble at all. The food was great. A little low on salt and spice, but that's how corzido is supposed to be, and it does admittedly let every element speak for itself. I loved the yams especially, and the beef was my favourite. My father preferred the pork. The soup was a carrot cream soup, and though I don't like cream, i can admit it was nice. The bread basket was massive for just one person, had to be a whole loaf haha. We shared it with a French couple sitting beside us

One of the top recommendations when in Furnas is to try the local Cozido das Furnas (stew cooked in the hot thermal underground). I really enjoyed this dish and this restaurant gives HUGE portions. Me and my spouse got a 1 person serving to split and we had leftovers (3-4 total servings). It comes with lots of different kinds of meat, yams, potatoes and cabbage. It has a smokey and somewhat sulfuric smell. It comes with rice on the side that I think was cooked in a broth and was good. Definitely worth trying. The soup of the day was a fish soup which was also delicious and very affordable. The menu and reviews say reservations are required for the cozido since it is a set amount they cooked. I called the day before and they told me no reservations needed so that was confusing. Maybe because I was not here during the peak tourist season (I came at the end of May). I would call the day before to confirm though. I came around 3pm, close to the lunch closing, and it was not busy and did a walk in.

We waited for a long time before anyone came up to us to take our order. The stew was very greasy. The blood sausage, tuna, and fried shrimp were mediocre at best. The best thing was the carrot soup, which was their soup of the day. This is definitely a tourist trap, so beware. Please also note that if you're interested in the volcano cooked food, you have to reserve it one day in advance. Overall, very underwhelming experience. Dirty bathrooms and overpriced.
Liuba M — Google review
I do not recommend this restaurant at all!! Don’t be fooled by the reviews tbh. We were waiting for minutes to ask about a table and no one from the restaurant came to ask anything, in fact when I tried to ask a waiter whether there was a table available she completely ignored me. They would walk by us and not and pretend we weren’t there. When I managed to ask someone about sitting, the man in particular was very uninterested in helping us and just told us it would be 1h waiting for a table. Surprisingly 15min later we were had a table and guess what? The food was not good, I ordered steak and it was so rough I couldn’t even chew it, the fried egg was burned and the cozido was incredibly bland.

Service is not super friendly, could be better. The stew was €44 for 2 people, but it can feed up to 3 easily. Stew was very tasty Would recommend booking in advance as we had to wait for a table of 5 for 1h

Ordered the cozido a day before as we thought that the experience would be worth it. We are Portuguese so know what the food should taste like. The meats were generous but very dry. Very disappointed and would not recommend ordering this dish ine way or another. Have something else such as the blood sausage and pineapple which was delicious.

Restaurante Tony's is a classic Mediterranean-style restaurant that offers traditional local dishes. It is advisable to make reservations in advance, especially for the popular traditional stew. However, walk-ins may also get lucky without a booking. The vegan vegetable stew is particularly praised for its savory and tender flavors. While not an extraordinary experience, it is a solid choice for sampling local cuisine, including pots cooked in nearby hot springs.
The traditional meat stew was not great. The beef is dry but we anticipated this and just wanted to try it out. The other squid is awesome, with the perfect source. We walked in without appointments and dishes were served fast. Also got friendly advice on the portion of food might be too much for two. Overall a really great experience.

This restaurant has a very modern and stylish interior, with clean lines and a comfortable atmosphere. Our tour guide brought us here for lunch, and it turned out to be a great choice. The meal included three courses, each nicely prepared and beautifully presented. The starter was a warm soup, simple but flavorful, and a great way to begin the meal. For the main course, we had a local specialty dish that is cooked using natural geothermal heat. I found that really fascinating—especially because earlier, on our way to the restaurant, we had passed through the park where this geothermal cooking takes place. It was so interesting to see how the heat from the earth is used for cooking, something truly unique to this area. For dessert, we were served fresh pineapple. It was incredibly sweet and juicy—one of the best pineapples I’ve ever had! I really loved it. To go with my meal, I ordered a glass of local beer, which was refreshing and matched perfectly with the food. The service was also excellent. The waiter was polite, spoke very good English, and was genuinely friendly and enthusiastic. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience with delicious food, great service, and a modern, pleasant setting. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.

This is a must try to experience the volcano stew in you are in Furnas. There is so much food with the package option and it includes drinks (wine and coffee too) and soup and dessert. It was an interesting experience. The food was good and plentiful, but had a unique flavor due to the way it is cooked. The Açores pineapple for dessert was amazing. They got really busy and at the end of was hard to get our check paid to leave.

We are very happy they were able to fit us in midday without a reservation and even more excited to get to sit on the patio and enjoy the weather. That being said, we went there 2nd September and I would highly recommend learning from our mistake and booking a reservation if you want to dine here. We ordered the meal for one of the Cozido to split for lunch and the passion fruit pudding for dessert. Both were delicious.

I really don't understand the hype surrounding the Cozido das Furnas dish. While the cooking process is truly unique and fascinating—slow-cooked for hours underground using the heat of the Furnas volcano—the end result was very disappointing. I found the dish heavy and distinctly lacking in flavor. The meat was excessively fatty, and since all the ingredients are cooked together, they end up tasting uniform and uninspired. Essentially, it was just large, boiled pieces of unseasoned vegetables and meat. For me, it was one of the most unappetizing meals I've had. As for the restaurant itself, the experience was a good one. The service was excellent, and the food outside of the Cozido was as good as one could expect—I have no complaints about the establishment or the staff. Be aware that the restaurant is usually very busy, so a reservation is needed a day in advance. Photos: Cozido for 2 & soup of the day.

If you're in Furnas, trying the famous Cozido is a must, and I gave it a go at Tony's Restaurant. It was definitely an interesting experience, unlike anything I've tasted before, cooked right there by the volcanic heat underground! Before the cozido, we started with the soup of the day, a delicious potato soup with kale or cabbage strips, which was a warm start to the meal. The Cozido itself was good, with very tender meats and vegetables. However, a heads-up: one portion is absolutely huge! My dining partner and I shared one, and it was still way too much for two people – I think it would be perfect for three or even four. We paid 40 euros for one Cozido, which is a fair price considering its size and unique cooking method. I was also a little surprised that it seemed to lack much in the way of strong seasonings, being quite a simple, natural taste. But that's part of its unique charm, I suppose, letting the natural flavors of the ingredients and the cooking method shine. Throughout our meal, the waiters were very kind and attentive, which added to the positive vibe. The atmosphere was nice and lively, making for a truly memorable dining experience. Just remember, you'll need to make a reservation as it's a popular spot! Overall, it's a unique and iconic dish to try, and worth the experience in Furnas!

We had lunch there, we came with a reservation, but there was some free space. We had a bruschetta as starter, a cozido and lulas grelhadas. Everything was amazing, specially the lulas and the portions were very generous. They were fast to serve and the waiter was very nice. It costed 55€, worth the price we paid.

We tried the cozido and really enjoyed it, the flavours were great and the meat was very good. We booked in advance for lunch by calling the day before, which we recommend as it’s a popular spot. It’s a bit touristy, but the service was quick and the staff friendly. Would recommend!

The best food we had on our trip to London, Portugal and Azores combined. Highly recommend. We lucked out but best to have reservations. Try the native dish cooked underground. A flavor out of this world. Amazing value! Really could’ve shared one plate but we indulged 😅

Good price value place. We came here from a recommendation and it was a good decision. They have a wide variety of dishes, local and international. We ordered the cocido do furnas and it was a pleasure. We ordered it for 1 person and the it was very generous. I really believe a couple of people could eat from this dish. The staff were very attentive and quick. They spoke several languages. I really recommend you attend to this place and if you can, book before arrival.

Everyone in the Azores and online mentioned to try the cozido (but warned us that it was just ok) but it turned out to be one of my favorite meals of the trip! The fresh pineapple mouse was great too. This place gets very busy at lunch but staff was very friendly and moved as quickly as possible. Try to make a reservation if you can.

The feijoada is highly recommended! The pork bifana was just ok a bit chewy, but the burger was really good (not pictured because it disappeared quickly). Service was friendly and attentive. Better to make reservation beforehand.

Good food, highly recommend the bean stew and the cheese selection with the artisan bread. It’s a perfect spot to go to right after the bath as it’s conveniently right between the park and the parking.

Amazing place🔥. We ordered pasta, cozido, steak, tuna steak. Everything is very delicious😋. Special thanks to the friendly and polite staff🤝. It's better to reserve a table. We were lucky to find a free table. Many people after us didn't get in, everything was taken.

We tried the famous Cozido das Furnas, a traditional Azorean dish cooked in volcanic steam. It was a unique and authentic meal, clearly prepared with care and tradition in mind. Although it wasn’t really my favorite dish personally; I found it to be more pork-heavy than beef, which isn’t quite my preference, it was still a great opportunity to try something truly local. The staff made us feel right at home and added a lot to the overall experience. Highly recommend Ja Se Sabe for anyone looking to enjoy Azorean hospitality and cuisine in a warm, genuine setting!

Tea house
Azores Essentials Lda., also known as Chalet da tia Merces, is a sustainable project that showcases local products from all nine islands of the Azores. They offer a unique brunch experience on the first weekend of every month, featuring a variety of island products. Additionally, guests can book brunch on other weekends with advance notice. The teahouse serves homemade cakes, Azorean cheeses, and locally brewed Gorreana tea.
We are so, so, so grateful to Paula for hosting us on our last night in Furnas. The seven course All Azores Royal Tea Meal was so thoughtful from start to finish. Paula is truly one of a kind - a great cook, a generous host, an excellent storyteller, and now, our friend. There were so many different things to try, and we particularly enjoyed the limpets, the sweet and sour stew, the incredible cheeses, veggies, and bean dip, all the different kinds of tea, and some unique volcanic wines. While it was the perfect way to say farewell to Sao Miguel Island, we almost wish we did it on our first day simply because we left knowing so much more about Furnas and the Azores than we did coming into it. We can't wait to come back and do it again (and the brunch, and the water tasting, and the tea tasting!). Thank you, Paula!

Wow, if you want an authentic tea experience like no other, this is a must. The building itself was beautiful, and Paula was the best host. She not only gave us an explanation of the building, and the history, but gave us so much info and insight into the teas! The teas were delicious and it was even better when we received the snacks, with a good and local assortment from the island. I would definitely say book this, even if you don’t like tea. You can tell they truly care about the culture of tea and how it impacted Portugal as a whole. The entire experience felt customized and personal. Thank you Paula!

100% recommend!! The experience is so unique! We had the All Azores Brunch and it was very special! Cheeses from the different islands, pork, tuna, eggs, teas etc. Paula, was hosting the experience and it was great! She is very nice and she explained and shared with us lots of facts and stories from Azores 💖

Absolutely incredible experience! My husband and I did this on our first day in Sao Miguel on our honeymoon and we learned so much about the azores. We did the geothermal brunch option and the food was good but the information and experience truly cannot be beat. If you ever wanted to learn something about geothermal activity and the history and culture of the azores I cannot recommend enough.
Meghan P — Google review
This is a must do! We had so many memorable experiences on the island, but the tea brunch was one of our favorites. Paula is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history, ecology, and gastronomy of the Azores islands. If you are only able to visit São Miguel Island, like we were, it was wonderful to at least have a food tour of the other islands. We did this on our last day in Furnas, but had we known how amazing it would be, we would have booked a second day to try one of the other experiences she offers. Make a reservation as these are private events and Paula does book up.

This is the best experience you can have on the island! We had the All Azorean Brunch and we tasted unique foods and drinks from the different islands and learned a lot of the Azorean history with it. Paula is an amazing host! Please note that you have different options of tastings to choose from and is with reservation only beforehand. Highly recommend, this will make your holiday the best!

This must have been the absolute best experience on the entire island. The food was amazing, the tastings, the explanations were all top notch! Paula offers a great variety of menus. We had the vegan geothermal brunch and honestly, for 35€ a person, it felt like a steal! She has made it her personal goal to offer traditional dishes that are naturally vegan and cooked with the utmost care and taste. We learned so much about the Azorean culture, the different tastes of water and tea to the level of chemistry even! We got to experiment with tea making with geothermal water. I can keep going on and on about how amazing this was and most of all, Paula is such a knowledgeable, kindhearted, warm person. If you’re hesitating, don’t. This will be the best thing you did on your entire holiday.

We spent 9 days between Madeira and Sao Miguel and of all the things we saw, did, ate and explored.. this was hands down the most amazing experience we had during our travels. We booked the geothermal tea brunch and Paula was welcoming and informative. The food was delicious! The grounds are beautiful and the entire experience gave us such an in depth look and appreciation for the history of Furnas. If we ever find ourselves in Furnas again, we will absolutely do this again!
