The National Palace of Pena, located in Sintra, Portugal, is a 19th-century Romanticist palace situated on a high rock and former monastery site surrounded by parkland. The palace was commissioned by King Ferdinand II as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family and was designed by Prussian architect Ludwig von Eschwege. It features a mix of architectural styles including Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic, and Neo-Renaissance.
great place! i would recommend to book an early time slot to tour the castle inside, it gets very packed inside. you can also just buy the park ticket and still walk outside and see the promenade, architecture, and cool spots while saving the money.
Lexie P — Google review
A nice monument, the visit of which means several lines of waiting and a considerable number of people. We bought tickets online for a specific time that was still available. You need to buy at least 1-2 days in advance if you want a specific time. We took a tuk-tuk to the palace and it was a nice ride with a short commentary on what we passed and a recommendation on which exit to take from the garden. We went back by HOP-ON HOP-OFF bus No. 434 for 13.5 EUR. We took advantage of the shuttle bus offer from the entrance gate of the complex to the castle. According to the time slot on the ticket, you join a queue and essentially complete the entire tour of the castle in this queue. As Central Europeans, I am used to a different form of commented tours of monuments, but I understand that this is not feasible with such a large number of people. I will not comment on the exterior or interior of the palace, because there are thousands of photos for that. However, the extensive park situated in the hills is beautiful. The network of paths and paths is breathtaking and there is always something to admire. We kept walking downhill to the exit by the pond with the Duck House along the path marked by the castle tower. There was a bus stop at the exit.

Loved the experience of visiting this place from Lisbon. Great architecture. Must visit when in Sintra. Views from the top are majestic, probably on a clear day, the sunset would be perfect. Recommend buying tickets in advance 3 days to get extra 15% off. Please plan your travel and accordingly book
Vinay G — Google review
The structure is amazing. It is a combination of romanticism, moorish, and gothic architecture. Going inside the rooms Was ok, but not necessary. There is very little customer service in the park. Be aware, you cannot drive to the top. It is illegal. You should park at the bottom of the hill and take a ride up. This is an issue. Well worth the visit, the communication leading up to the visit wasn’t clear.
Tony R — Google review
Certainly chilly weather at the palace compared to Lisbon. Dress warm. Take the shuttle transfer ticket as well along with the ticket since the palace is about 30 minute uphill walk from the entrance. After seeing lot of places, chose to see only the exterior. Took about 2 hours from start to finish.
Miraj M — Google review
Great place (even better on a blue sky day) Colors are interesting, even inside is not luxurious, we enjoy the cozy vibes of the place. And if you are an Instagrammer there are good points and views for pictures. TRANSPORTATION 1st Recommendation: take a Tuk-tuk (golf car), even it is 20.euro per person We went up walking, and half way, we still have at least 30.mins more way up. TICKETS it seems the tickets are slightly more expensive online, but at the machines at the entrance you have a slot, and you might end up waiting 1 hour or more. FOOD there is a cafeteria, inside (a couple of tables with view and less crowded) Outside, it is nice too, and gets a little busier on a sunny day.
Daniel P — Google review
Amazing place and viewpoint. Buy ticket in advance or go with a random GetYourGuide tour to pass the lines. It's alot of people at the scene! You can visit only the exterior or the interior as well (separate line). There's a cafe and shop at the top.
Hanne H — Google review
We visited Pena Palace in September and it was a great time to go, far less crowded than summer, with short, fast-moving lines. The views from the palace are absolutely stunning and the atmosphere is full of friendly, welcoming people. Going with a tour is definitely the way to do it. We booked with Buendía Tours that left from Rossio Square, and our guides, Miguel and Victoria were outstanding: knowledgeable, organized and engaging. The tour was very kid-friendly, and even families with babies had no issues. Highly recommended for a smooth and memorable visit.

Historic Sites
The Moorish Castle, constructed in the 10th century, sits atop a cliff in Sintra and offers breathtaking panoramic views. It played a significant role during the Reconquista and was built during the period of Muslim Iberia. The castle is part of the beautiful Sintra-Cascais Nature Park and is surrounded by other historic sites such as Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and Convent of the Capuchos.
It’s not as extravagant as the Pena Palace but it’s still worth the trip. The walk is narrow and it’s very windy but the view is stunning and you can see other landmarks poking out from the trees as you walk along the wall. You’re only walking around the wall and there aren’t as many people so it can be a quick visit although I would still recommend that you but the tickets ahead of time.
Scott L — Google review
It was a very cool experience being able to visit this castle. Breathtaking views and well preserved ruins. However, we did bring our toddler and there were some parts where I felt a little unsafe because he could fall off a wall or I could fall easily while holding him
Jasmin W — Google review
Excellent hike with excellent views. One of the oldest and rarest intact castle in Europe. There are multiple ways to the top. You can hike or you can take a car. Hike is faster and cheaper but make sure you bring your camera and a bottle of water.
Batalia122 — Google review
Be prepared for a hard climb. Don't trust taxi and tuk-tuk drivers. You'll still have to walk up; it's impossible to drive up. Visit only in good weather; rain will make it incredibly slippery, and clouds will prevent you from seeing the stunning views of Sintra and the surrounding area. Many other castles and palaces in the Sintra area are also visible from here. Stunning!😍 During the season, it's better to buy tickets in advance, but carefully calculate the time; the climb may take longer than you expect, and if you buy a timed ticket, you won't make it in time.
Anastasiia — Google review
Worth visiting if you travel to Sintra. Can be quite energy demanding as there are lots of stairs and can be quite steep. Recommend to take transport to and away from the spot. We arrive in the afternoon and no need to wait.
Wing L — Google review
Getting here was a bit complicated. Google maps made it complicated and we walked up from our parking spot. We did see tuktuks coming down but not sure how to go up. We drove here since it did take 40 mins instead of 2 hours by train from Lisbon. We bought our tickets in advance online. But you can. Purchase them near the entrance. The climb can be intense but 100% recommend for the views and history. Just make sure you're wearing shoes with good grip in the event it rains or the fog comes in. Some areas, the ground can be uneven, so make sure to watch where you are walking. Some castle walkways can be narrow and there can be a risk of falling. I do recommend some sort of railing. This can be difficult without ruining the experience. I do recommend checking in with the public to see what works best before implementation. Loved it. Would come again. Thank you for the experience!
Natalie M — Google review
Be warned, you need a certain level of fitness since it’s a hike. Loads of stairs and walking. But reaching the top made it all worth while! The view was breathtaking and no words could better describe. Buy tickets at least 3 days in advance for a 15% discount

Amazing panoramic views of Sintra and Pena Palace ! But be prepared: it’s a lot of walking and stairs, with uneven paths and steep sections. If you love history and don’t mind a workout, you’ll enjoy it. Bring comfy shoes and some water!

Quinta da Regaleira is a fascinating early 20th-century palace and garden complex located in Portugal. Originally purchased by the eccentric millionaire Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, it was designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini, showcasing a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline architectural styles. The estate is adorned with hidden symbols related to Templar Knights, Masonry, and the Rose-Cross.
Quite possibly my favourite place when visiting Lisbon/Sintra. Stunning spectacular castle with a mysterious gothical feel. Interior is lush and intricate attention to detail. Every angle of the palace brings a different aspect and feel. Statues leading up to the main entrance are ethereal. Grounds are vast and beautiful but can get a bit lost with some dead end trails. But all part of the exploratory feel with the well and underground tunnels making this so worth a visit. A must-do!
Nilvanta K — Google review
Simply breathtaking! History at every step. 100% worth a visit. The price is very reasonable for the size of the entire area you can walk through! Subtle modern finishes. Toilets at every step - modern and clean. Beautiful, decent cafe - no waiting. Prices very reasonable. Completely satisfied!
Jakub F — Google review
While it's not as large as some of the other palaces, the grounds are beautiful and full of things to explore such as caves, towers, waterfalls, viewpoints, and side trails. Also it's walking distance from historic center, which makes it a convenient visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and would highly recommend.
Alex K — Google review
The gardens and palace are mad! I loved the atmosphere, very Hobbitesque. Weather wasn’t great but that just made all the vegetation more luscious. It was my favourite part of Sintra, better than the Pena Palace in my opinion
Sarah M — Google review
Great place to visit. Be aware no parking. You can park down the street at the Charming Purple boutique hotel. You don't have to pay but you need to spend at least 5 euro for anything in theirs restaurant. Great place for food. They have a shuttle to the castle for 6 euro per person there and back. They can take you to the National Palace of Pena. Amazing place cost is around 30euro per family. We'll worth it.
Martin S — Google review
Beautiful palace with a really interesting garden to explore. Worth the visit and take your time exploring. Don't rush it so you can enjoy all the little Hidden paths and caves
Nicholas M — Google review
Gorgeous and unmissable ... if every palace in Sintra had a title, Quinta da Regaleira would surely be the most mystical. Easily accessible on foot from the town center, this palace, though relatively small, is so richly decorated that it almost resembles a theatrical set. Its architecture stands out in the Sintra landscape. Built at the beginning of the 20th century in the purest Romantic tradition, it is the brainchild of two men: the businessman and Freemason António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro and the Italian architect Luigi Manini. Quinta da Regaleira is brimming with esoteric symbolism and references to mythology, alchemy, and Freemasonry. Indeed, Carvalho Monteiro was a man fascinated by mysticism and the occult sciences. The interior is a jewel of craftsmanship, from floor to ceiling, but the most interesting feature is actually the garden. Designed as a labyrinth of caves and secret passages, each path leads to an unexpected discovery, much to the delight of the curious. One of the most impressive is the "Initiation Well," a 27-meter-deep spiral staircase descending to an underground cavern. This well was once used for initiation rituals, symbolizing the descent into the depths of consciousness and spiritual rebirth. Quite an experience ! After exploring the bowels of the earth, climb back up to the top of the Regaleira Tower; a superb view awaits you !
Enjoy L — Google review
I first came across this spiral staircase on Instagram and instantly added it to my must-visit list 🌀 Seeing it in person was even better than I imagined — it completely gave off those Gothic architecture vibes I love so much. The dramatic curves, the shadows, and the intricate design details were just mesmerizing. I had the best experience exploring the place, taking my time to admire the craftsmanship and the atmosphere around it. It’s one of those hidden corners that truly feels like stepping into a piece of art — mysterious, elegant, and a little cinematic. If you’re a fan of architecture and aesthetic spots, this one’s a gem worth visiting. I can totally see why it’s become such a viral spot online — it’s even more magical in real life ✨

Praia das Maçãs, located in the Lisbon District, is a charming sandy beach that stands out for its easy accessibility. Unlike other beaches near Sintra, it lacks dangerous stone cliffs, making it safer for swimming. Visitors can reach this picturesque destination by taking a unique old tram ride. The area also features a delightful town and an array of eateries overlooking the sea where visitors can savor local produce and enjoy the serene atmosphere.
Beautiful calm beach where you can feel the vibes of ocean and enjoy both swimming and surfing. Easy and affordable to reach by Bolt or Uber from Sintra.
Zoya K — Google review
Great sandy beach, massive waves so not the safest for small children, but fun for those who are swimmers. Make sure to check out the archeological site just up from the beach, it's not well marked so easy to miss.
Lyndsey B — Google review
A small beach within a very pleasant environment. It was known for its rough and freezing waters, not so freezing anymore... and that is its main threat. At week-ends and in the summer time huge crowds overpopulate the place which then risks losing its charm and traditional quietness.
Jorge B — Google review
A peaceful sandy beach in a charming little village — such a lovely surprise. I ended up here by chance and instantly fell in love. Praia das Maçãs is not just a beach — it’s a great starting point for beautiful walks. You can head to Azenhas do Mar, hike toward Cabo da Roca, or explore the cliffs near Praia Grande. Sunset views are stunning, and the whole area feels calm and welcoming.

Cape Roca, located in Colares, is a picturesque viewpoint within a national park. The area features a lighthouse that houses a tourism office and offers stunning views of the ocean. Surrounded by the lush greenery of the Sintra Mountains, this historic village provides a tranquil retreat while being conveniently close to Lisbon and other nearby villages. The estate's history dates back to the 1960s when Baron Bodo von Bruemmer renovated the property with great care.
It's an endless, elusive feeling to stand at the westernmost point of Europe. The view is beautiful, definitely worth a visit. Buses run frequently, and there are places to shop, eat and drink not far from the lookout. It's also worth taking a walk along the hilly slopes to the Ursa beach (just to the top of the hill), from where the view is even more spectacular. However, this path is not paved, so be careful in very windy weather.
Marcell B — Google review
Amazing place! It really gives you the vibe of the end of the world. Feels so unreal to be here. Definitely should visit! Note the wind could be quite strong here and a bit chilly even during the summer. And do be careful don't fall down the cliff (not all the places have safety nets). Very lovely to take a walk here, definitely want to visit again.
CHIN — Google review
I must say this place is amazing and most beautiful. Do you know europe as a continent end here on the west side of it. Here there no shops and anything much so be prepared. Overall it’s worth the visit, many people come here with camping cars and stay nearby. But the best part is you can even visit Sintra which is nearby and you can even go with the bus. Also, for your safety many people walk on some places which they should not but you take care.
Gaurav R — Google review
A pleasant location near to Lisbon. It has great views of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the westernmost point of Sintra Mountain Range, mainland Portugal and continental Europe. It is very easy to get there from Sintra. You can take public transport that takes around 50 minutes from the Sintra station. We took a bolt (App taxi) from Sintra and it took around 25 minutes costing roughly around 10 euros.
Indrajit G — Google review
Unforgettable. Breathtaking. The moment you'll memorise forever. One of the reasons to visit Portugal is to meet sunset at the edge of the Europe. Tip: to avoid crowded spots and make good picturd, step a bit to the left from main observation point.
Zoya K — Google review
Stunning viewpoint that is the west-most point in continental Europe. It’s a must visit if you come to Sintra since it’s only about 40 minute bus ride. The roads leading up to it can be winding but the view is worth it. My one advice is to bring a jacket or wear warm clothing because it’s much colder than you would think. It’s very very windy and it can be foggy. We had to wait about an hour to fog to clear up and the waiting definitely paid off.
Scott L — Google review
Visiting Cabo da Roca was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my trip to Portugal. Known as the westernmost point of continental Europe, it offers breathtaking views that make you feel like you are standing at the edge of the world. The combination of dramatic cliffs, the endless stretch of the Atlantic Ocean, and the fresh sea breeze creates a magical atmosphere that is both calming and awe-inspiring. The drive to the cape is scenic, and once you arrive, the view is absolutely worth it. The lighthouse adds a charming touch to the landscape, and the monument that marks the location makes for a perfect photo spot. On a clear day, the horizon seems endless, and the crashing waves below remind you of the raw power of nature. I especially loved the walking trails around the area – they give you the chance to explore the coastline from different perspectives. It can get windy, so carrying a light jacket is a good idea. The sense of peace and vastness you feel here is hard to put into words. Overall, Cabo da Roca is a must-visit for anyone exploring Portugal – a place where nature, history, and beauty meet perfectly.

O Loureiro

Restaurant
O Loureiro is a family-run restaurant known for serving top-quality fish at great value, right by the beach with stunning sea views. Visitors have been pleasantly surprised by the exceptional food quality, even for seemingly ordinary dishes like french fries. The seafood with rice dish has been particularly praised for its excellence, and the overall dining experience is enhanced by the spectacular ocean view. Despite not being cheap, the prices are considered reasonable given the fantastic taste and good service provided.
Food was amazing, tasted like homemade and hood spices. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Place was clean and comfortable. Would like to return soon. Went with my Grandma and it was easy to get to, I parked a little far but only a few steps and a ramp. She is 82 and slowly she made through and loved the place and the view. You might be able to drive someone to the door of the restaurant and then go after parking, very easy. Super recommend!!

The truth is that the experience in this restaurant has been a shame. The waiter having free tables had us standing without offering us a drink or anything to snack on for 35 minutes in front of the dirty table, although we can think that he was busy and that he really couldn't do anything else. Ok. After waiting to be seated we waited another 25 minutes for our order to be taken. When we ordered, we ordered a salmon skewer with vegetables, which was not bad at all, and two cod with all the illusion of being able to eat a good cod in Portugal. When the cod arrived, the smell was very strong, the texture was bad, and the truth was that it could not be eaten. After asking the waiter if the cod was fresh he said yes when at the end of the meal when he took the plate away because we couldn't eat it a bit, and it was whole without even asking us if we wanted anything else, he came back from the kitchen and told us maybe It was a little older cod... However, when we say we're leaving without eating, he brings us the bill and tells us that we have to pay for the cod. So after the anger we had, we paid and left the place. I never write negative reviews of any place, but the truth is that after paying almost €70 and not eating, I had to say something.

Fantastic fresh fish and seafood, either grilled or cooked in other traditional ways. The feijoada de choco (cuttlefish bean stew) is to die for!!! Staff always kind, helpful and smiling. Very good price/ quality relationship too. In one word, genuine! I wrote this review five years ago, I’m still a regular at this restaurant, and still haven’t had a bad experience. Food is always good, staff is always friendly and helpful, and homemade deserts keep getting better. I’ve read a few negative reviews and cannot recognize any of what is said. Love this place!

Tascantiga is a laid-back restaurant located in the historic center of Sintra, offering a modern twist on traditional Portuguese tapas. The chef, Vitor Paes, puts a creative spin on classic recipes, serving up dishes like confit pork cheeks with mushrooms, fried cuttlefish with aioli, and codfish cakes with olive puree and ham powder. The restaurant also offers outdoor terrace seating where visitors can enjoy their meal while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
We had a lovely experience at Tascantiga in Sintra! We arrived about 15 minutes before they opened and were lucky to get a table on the beautiful terrace with a great view. You order by ticking boxes on the menu - which is fun - and the food was absolutely delicious. We had the Tuna Steak and the Steak Burger, both full of flavor and beautifully cooked. The portions were generous - which you definitely need during a day exploring Sintra. The staff were very fast, friendly, and welcoming. Highly recommend this spot for a quiet, relaxed and tasty meal in a stunning setting!

Amazing food and atmosphere! If you’re in Sintra, it’s a must try. My personal favourite was the octopus blades which comes with grid shallots as garnish and it tasted amazing. My other fav was the pro cheeks and it was so tender and juicy! If what we had at dinner is any indication, I’m sure the rest of the menu is also amazing!

Efficient services. Lots of tapa to choose from. We enjoyed the food. The sausage is a bit too salty. The potatoes wedges are flavoured and are served with mayonnaise and ketchup. The mayonnaise is good. The seafood salad has shrimp, octopus and mussels. The octopus is well cooked and we love the texture. Good to recharge ourselves after visiting the Quinta da Regaleira.

Amazing tapas! One of the best highlights of my trip to Lisbon. Great flavours and variety. To expect a queue at peak hours but it’s worth the wait. The port tonic was delicious! Their octopus, calamari, wings were good. Pumpkin petit gateux dessert is a must with their cheese ice cream.

Despite being located in a prime tourist spot, Tascantiga served some impressive tapas. The wait can be long (up to an hour) during peak season, but we were lucky to wait only 10 minutes for a table. Their table turnaround time is quick because the food comes out pretty fast. This is a great place to get lunch during a day trip to Sintra and Pena Palace.

Restaurant
Xentra is a restaurant with excellent food and service. It has a very clean atmosphere, no smell of grease or kitchen at all and good prices.
It is highly recommended to believe in and try the all you can eat. You can choose from a great selection of fresh buffet food. A glass of drink is included with the service. Whether alcoholic beverages or soft drinks. 15 euros for the whole thing, well worth it. The place is nice, the bathrooms are clean, the service is friendly and polite. Thank you.

Best lunch deal in Sintra In a super touristic city, this free buffet is the best option for “on a budget” travelers. The food is good and the whole deal, including drinks and dessert, makes it the best value you can get in the touristic center. If you’re traveling in group, even better. Each ones makes their own plate and everyone is happy. Highly recommended.

We had the €15 buffet. They had lots of dessert, choices, and many meat choices as well. They had different kinds of sausages, some pork and some other meats. There was also a pasta dish and rice. there was also a large salad bar to choose from and other kinds of small salads. It included a drink and my family enjoyed it.

Food was everything good!!! But restaurant looks very empty. €15 for buffet and 1 drink. Very affordable price. Underrated…

Food could be a bit more variate, but still it tastes amazing! The desserts are really good. The lady that served us was very nice and helpful all the time! Great cheap place to eat.

€15,- all in buffet, including wine/beer/softdrink/water. Price -quality very good. Even pasta was not overcooked, fresh saladbar. Great deserts. Once again, great value for the €15,-. Friendly staff.

Probably the most cost efficient meal in the area including a drink. I do wish there was additional hot Portuguese dishes but it is good as it is.

I like the food, cod fish, pork chops, verious salads, desert ( cheese cake was good, not too sweet) fresh oranges. It's good value comparing nearby restaurants. Even include one drink, I had a glass of red wine. 13 eur per person. Highly recommend.

Restaurant
Restaurante Nortada is a highly recommended dining spot in the Colares area, known for its fish and seafood offerings. Established in 1979, this family-managed restaurant upholds the values of its founders by providing excellent service in a warm and welcoming environment. Guests can enjoy stunning ocean views while savoring fresh fish caught in the wild.
INCREDIBLE. Seated above the ocean and a beautiful walking path, with manicured lawn and natural flowering ground cover running down the hill. The staff were excellent, ever present and attentive, but not intrusive. Open to answering all questions and providing excellent input on dishes and desserts. On recommendation, I got the shrimp with the coconut milk sauce and rice, which was beyond expectations and very reasonably priced. I ordered the chocolate mousse for dessert, but the staff also provided a sample of the coffee layered cookie cake to try, which resembles pumpkin pie and tastes like a cookie-graham cracker dessert. The views and ambience are unparalleled and I was fortunate to arrive during off-peak times, having the place nearly to myself, and the sun room window open to let in the fresh sea air. I HIGHLY recommend this place. Topping it all off is the beautiful drive in and out to reach it. Wonderful day trip stop after Cabo de Roca and Praia Ursa.

The food was good but for me the taste was ok. The ingredients were fresh. We ate Fish with rice was good and the lobster risotto. We also had the sea bass with puff pastry and that I think was the best. the Padrón Peppers were also fine. The service a little slow but the waitress was nice. The view is amazing if you can get a table close to the window!

I recommend this place 100 times over! Starting with the stunning view and wonderful atmosphere, the lunch here is delicious. We tried a variety of dishes — tuna, octopus, oysters — all incredibly tasty and beautifully presented! The staff were friendly and attentive. Dining by the ocean is a true pleasure, especially when the food is this good 🥰

One of the best, possibly the best in the area. Extensive menu. Freshest ingredients. Great service and reasonable prices. Suffice to say that over the last 3 years we have dined here more than 20 times. We are looking forward to the next time. Personal Thanks to Hector.

Absolutely phenomenal place with great service good pricing, quality food, very fresh seafood as well. The place is on top of the hill just next to the beach and you can see the sea from it. The view is absolutely scenic and beautiful and the staff is extremely friendly highly recommend it.

Restaurante Nortada is a cozy, inviting spot with great food and a stunning view. The atmosphere is relaxed yet vibrant, the dishes are delicious, and the service is friendly and efficient. The place is STUNNING ! The view, atmosphere at all, service and, of course, incredibly delicious dishes (+quick serving). Repeated our visit 2 times and when we will be in Portugal next time 100% will visit again. Also breathtaking sunset view.

Day 2

Northwest side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with National Palace of Sintra, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Azenhas do Mar Viewpoint. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

The National Palace of Sintra, dating back to the 11th century, showcases a remarkable collection of tiles and features intricate courtyards and rooms. Situated amidst lush greenery and hunting areas, this historic palace holds over 1000 years of Portuguese history and was favored by many monarchs due to its proximity to Lisbon. The Coat of Arms room is a must-see among the unique chambers within the palace.
This is a very nice and peaceful place. Not so popular and advertised like the other favorites in Sintra but definitely worth the time. I like it's simplicity, originality and modesty. The garden is outstanding from any angle. I definitely recommend this attraction!

Very interesting place! But in our case it was incredibly crowded... But its a cool place too visit! Lots of different types of architecture. It will take 1,5-2 hours normally, but if its very crowded then 2-3 hours. The walk is quite steep, take that into account, to have a decent endurance.
Karel L — Google review
We decided to walk to the palace to see it up close and enjoy the views. We went as far as we could without waiting in line to go inside. We felt the view and walk was worth the price of the ticket. €9 for seniors. While many people bought the double ticket we were ok doing the outside trip. The traffic the las several kM was crazy in mid Obtober. Near the entrance gate there is a shuttle bus for anyone who wants to avoid a steep walk.Bathrooms at gate and gift shop.
Michael M — Google review
This palace is nice, many rooms and areas to visit and views form the balconies and gardens of the hills and another castles in Sintra. A lot of history to be told here and a nice walk through all the facilities. Nonetheless, I take out 1 star for the elevated price, in my opinion too much for what is has to offer. They take advantage of tourists and it is clearly overpriced. Another star out because several rooms had all the items (furniture, statues paintings) covered in plastic for restoration, but they did not mention this at the entrance and all the same charge full price in the ticket. Shame on them.
Trachemysta — Google review
A royal residence that feels both grand and lived-in. The National Palace of Sintra blends centuries of Portuguese history with Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline architecture, all crowned by its iconic twin chimneys. Inside, richly decorated halls, intricate tilework, and panoramic views reveal the taste and power of Portugal’s monarchs, while the kitchens and living quarters hint at daily life in another era. Compact enough to explore in 1–2 hours, yet full of fascinating details, it’s a perfect starting point before diving into Sintra’s other palaces and gardens.
Florin A — Google review
After visiting the PenaPalace we were not expecting much from this. But it was so interesting and gorgeous! It is totally worth a visit and is rather an unsung attraction that others should participate in.
Linda E — Google review
Wow factors and some meh. Still worth the visit. The palace is a bit empty in furnitures so the rooms need a bit of imagination. I would've liked to know more when each part of the palace was built or added. Big plus for moving and storytelling characters in screens. Gardens are pretty and the main hall was amazing.

A marvel not to be passed up. Wear comfortable shoes and be ready to be blown away...driving is a bit of a challenge as roads are steep and winding and free parking is available and can be limited on weekends due to large crowds. Plenty of taxis in area if not driving....just beautiful...

Nestled in the heart of the Sintra forest and Moon Hills, Capuchos Convent, also known as the Cork Convent, is a must-see destination when visiting Sintra. Built in the 16th century by ascetic monks following the principles of poverty, this compact Medieval convent used cork to line its small spaces. Despite being abandoned since the 1830s, wandering through its ruins still exudes an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
The Capuchos Convent was one of our favorite places during our time in Sintra. I bought tickets online in advance from home (you get a discount buying in advance), and we pre-reserved our Uber rides to & from the site which made transportation easy. We got tickets for opening time (9 am) and on a Monday (to avoid weekend crowds). We arrived just before it opened and we were the only ones there. We actually got the entire site to ourselves for an hour and a half! We were able to take our time, take tons of photos and enjoy the peacefulness and tranquility of the site. It was magical for us. Really gave us a glimpse into the meditative serenity of why the Friars built and lived there. You really get a sense of nature's magic. As we were leaving, there were several tour groups of people arriving and coming in .. I don't think we would have had the same magical experience we did if we had been there the same time as tons of people. My suggestion - go on a weekday and go early!!
Lindsey K — Google review
The Convent of the Capuchos, located in the Sintra Mountains, is a small 16th-century Franciscan monastery built by D. Álvaro de Castro, known for its simple architecture perfectly integrated into nature. Constructed among boulders and lined with cork, it reflects the Capuchin friars’ ideal of poverty and humility, who lived there in seclusion and contemplation. After the dissolution of the religious orders, it was abandoned and later restored, now managed by Parques de Sintra and open to the public. Its mystical atmosphere, the blend of stone, wood, and vegetation, and its profound silence make it one of Sintra’s most unique and inspiring sites, ideal for those seeking to capture the connection between spirituality and nature.

Such a magical place. We bought tickets for a night guided tour. It was amazing. It was beyond our expectations. Even to get there was an adventure.I think everyone owes this place a visit just to see monks humble lifestyle and their respect for the nature. Beautiful and sad at the same time. Guide Bertrand was very passionate and interesting. Highly recommended.
Ksenia H — Google review
I almost hesitate to review because I don't want too many people to visit! It is truly a magical place, kept in wonderful shape. They put great effort into restoring and preserving the historical nature of the place.
Theresa B — Google review
Minimalist and mossy, this site is the opposite of palace grandeur. Low doorways and tiny cells tell the story better than any plaque. It’s quiet, shaded, and contemplative—one of Sintra’s few truly peaceful stops. Not flashy, but if you like places with atmosphere and restraint, it sticks with you.
Beatriz C — Google review
Incredibly quiet, atmospheric and humble hermitage dating from 1560. The site is fed by natural springs and many of the tiny rooms, cells, stairs and narrow corridors used by the Capuchin Franciscans are excavated in the rock. A really beautiful place to visit and a must see!
Chris K — Google review
It is breathtaking beautiful. A beautiful and peaceful place one created for prayer meditation to honor God so unlike your everyday convent evident by the humility in which, it is evident, the friars leaved! As you walk through the facolity you are transported to a different time, a period... a way of life different than ours. It is a place i recommend people definitely visit!
Susan R — Google review
My favourite place in Portugal so far, admittedly only three days in. Incredibly atmospheric, set amongst moss covered boulders and trees in an isolated spot. It felt like a scene from a fantasy novel. Cork bark used for shutters, doors, frames, benches, boulders bulging out of walls. Remnant decorative features including a skull and Cross bones! A must visit.

Nestled in the Sintra Nature Reserve, the Park and Palace of Monserrate is an extravagant 19th-century mansion adorned with Moorish, Gothic, and Indian architectural influences. The Neo-Gothic mansion is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens featuring a diverse collection of ferns and captivating follies. Visitors can explore the opulent interiors of the house before strolling through the lush gardens.
One of the most beautiful palaces and gardens I ever visited and I am a fan. The carving on the walls inside takes your breath away. The room with 12 muses busts is the most beautifully planned. I am in love with the garden layering and planning, you can see how much work went into making different areas and styles look so organic together. Great place for nature and art lovers. No times slots booking needed. Hop on and hop off buses run until 18:30, park clothes at 19:00. Make sure you can spend 2-3 hours here as the area is huge and the hill on the way back are steep. But it is so much worth your visit, I promise!!

One of the most impressive Botanic gardens I've ever visited. Very amazing rare trees, monkey puzzle tree for example and a redwood sequoia. And many others. Also huge ferns. And they have an amazing collection of cacti. I also recommend to use zoomguide to get to know the park better while you walk there. The castle in itself is tiny, but it's all worth it, it really made me think of the Alhambra

Beautiful place. If you want to have fun exploring a palace/house without the mass amounts of tourists like Pena Palace, this is your place. Beautiful gardens to hike through. Signs are lacking a little on the garden trail, we ended up a service road heading down to the next village. If you want to walk directly to the Palace, veer right once you walk through the entrance after a couple 100 feet.

This was definitely a highlight of our trip to Lisbon. It is an absolutely stunning building with a beautifully intricate decor, not particularly large but very grand all the same. The gardens were absolutely beautiful. Anyone who is keen gardener or just loves gardens then this is an absolute treat. There was no queue to get in and we were so glad to bypass the Pena Palace which had hoards of people queueing. I highly recommend a visit.
Nuni R — Google review
Not the most popular sight in Sintra but we enjoyed this the most. Perhaps because it was not as crowded as the more popular sights. we got to enjoy the gardens especially and the exterior of the house. Took the public bus 1253 from Quinta da Regaliera, less than 10 minutes away in a mini-bus that blasted away Mamma Mia and the whole bus singing to it. What a trip!Bought tickets onsite as we weren’t sure we would make it in time. Definitely worth a visit.
Bianca P — Google review
Beautiful palace, it is a nice construction, tgat has been nicely restored, but the interior is rather empty (they want to recover the items that once were inside but those were sold in auction years ago, thus it may be quite difficult). The surroundings of the palace are also beautiful for a walk. I went myself a with my mother 77 years old, and she had some struggles walking around the park. The path is steep at some points, with plenty of stairs. Walkable for a normal person, but difficult for those with reduced mobility. Some areas may also be slippery. She fell once, and luckily she didn’t hurt herself, but it is something that people should take into account. Definitely the park is not visitable with wheel chair, although the lower part of the palace could be accessed. Inside the park there is a tea shop to sit and relax. The park itself gathers plants from many different parts of the world, very beautiful to see. Also mindblowing how plants can grow when left in nature. Finally, I would say it is worth getting an uber from Sintra, as we did this on the way there, and it costed 8€. On the way back we took the bus that goes slower (also very full!) and we paid 5€ x person (this was after 16h, I heard that if you take it before during the day, the cost is 13,5€, but then you can hop on and hop off at the different stops. This was informed in our accommodation). I would recommend the visit.

🏛️🌿🇲🇽📸 Visiting the Monserrate was an unforgettable experience and easily my favorite historical site in all of Portugal. The self-guided tour was incredibly well organized, complete with an audio program and fascinating archival photos showing the original state of the mansion. The gardens are absolutely stunning, with plant species from all over the world. As a Mexican, I especially appreciated the beautifully curated Mexican garden — the size of the cacti and other plants was genuinely impressive. I highly recommend prioritizing this over other nearby attractions. There’s plenty of parking available, but do keep in mind that Sundays are free for Portuguese residents, so it might get busy. I visited on a rainy Saturday, waited a bit in the car for the weather to clear, and ended up having the entire mansion to myself. Did you find this review helpful? ❤️

Azenhas do Mar Viewpoint in Portugal offers a breathtaking view of the meeting point between land and the powerful Atlantic Ocean. The picturesque setting features small blue-edged houses perched on cliffs, with the sea crashing against the rock wall below. The drive to this viewpoint is as spectacular as the destination itself, with winding roads offering stunning scenery. While it's a bit far from Lisbon, about a 2-hour journey via Sintra and then by bus, the experience is well worth it.
Beautiful place where the town on the cliff meets the ocean. It for sure is a hidden gem on the west coast of Portugal! The parking lot of the Viewpoint has many parking spaces, but the lot entrance is hidden and could be easily missed! The entrance is more visible if driving south on the road!

Restaurante Azenhas do Mar is perched on the cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the picturesque village below. The emphasis here is on fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese flavors, promising a unique dining experience. The whitewashed walls cascading down the cliffs create a stunning approach to the restaurant. While some may find it a bit pricey, the atmosphere and excellent service make it worth a visit. Visitors can enjoy delicious dishes like vegetarian risotto and chocolate cake while taking in the fantastic sunset view.
Hands down the best seafood we’ve ever had! Everything about our experience was 5 stars. The staff, view, ambiance, drinks and especially the food were outstanding! We plan on going back again this week to try the Blue Lobster and the chefs desert special. If you are in the area, you should stop by even if it’s for a drink and appetizers. We highly recommend the Tuna steak and ceviche. You won’t regret it and if you are there for the sunset, you will enjoy your dinner even more. Call for reservations if you can plan ahead so you get a good seat near the window. 🥂

We came here for lunch last summer and overall enjoyed our experience. We actually couldn’t finish all our food. Food was good but didn’t wow us except the barnacles—very fresh and delicious(it was our first time eating it). The price was on the expensive side but I think part of that is the amazing view. Overall it was worth the 1 time experience. We had a fantastic experience at this seafood restaurant. The ingredients were fresh and full of flavor. We ordered the tuna steak, which was served on a bed of caramelized onions with a fried egg on top, accompanied by crispy French fries. We also had a side of mixed sautéed vegetables — everything was absolutely delicious. For dessert, we tried the chocolate cake, which was the perfect way to end our meal. The menu has plenty of interesting options, and we’ll definitely be coming back to try more! The service was excellent — the staff were polite, attentive, and we didn’t have to wait long for anything. Inside, the atmosphere felt like being on a ship, with the sound of the ocean and a gentle breeze swaying the hanging lanterns. It was such a lovely and unique experience.

A restaurant with excellent view and good food (usually, the food in a restaurant with beautiful scenery may not be delicious or may be particularly expensive). This really surprised me. There is a very friendly and lovely waiter. He is really humorous, which greatly enhances our dining experience.

Definitely one of the best seafoods that you can have and I highly recommend this place. The restaurant has a stunning view over the ocean. The staff were helpful and friendly to educate us on the options in the menu. I was particularly impressed by our server (Valentino) who was comprehensive and quick in all steps of our experience (intro to menu items, timely serving, and bill calculations).

This place is in a great location with great views, but unfortunately the food was a major let down, either they need a new chef or something needs to change. The food especially the cod fish we ordered was super bland...it had no taste what so ever, and was primarily full of bones. The portion sizes of the dish were ridiculously small too. I wouldn't bother eating here for what you pay for.

Nestled in the charming village of Azenhas do Mar, Água e Sal is a delightful culinary gem that offers an array of fresh fish and seafood dishes. Although it’s not directly by the water, this restaurant captures the essence of coastal dining in Portugal. Opened by the son of a local restaurateur, it serves up mouthwatering specialties like grilled lobster and succulent prawns, alongside traditional favorites such as fried fish with garlic rice and aromatic herb butter limpets from the Azores.
Had the rosbife, and it was excellent—tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The service was friendly, and the overall atmosphere was warm and inviting. A solid spot for a good meal in Azenhas do Mar!

I would like to start with wonderful olive oil. The turbot fish was amazing, it came in perfect shape, the outer parts were juicy and jelly. Even though the mussels were small inside, they were very delicious. Small shrimps with garlic were delicious. Baby potatoes and boiled vegetables along with fish were the color of the meal. Served with tempura green beans, tartar sauce and basil sauce. It was the best I've ever eaten. We chose 2023 Soito white wine to accompany it.

Really enjoyed the shrimp soup, and the cod thing. But not too much on the mousse, probably my own taste bud doesn't suit the taste.

Pastry shop
Cafe
When visiting Sintra, be sure to indulge in the local delicacy known as Queijadas da Sapa. These delectable little cheesecakes have been a Sintra institution since 1756 and are crafted by hand in the traditional manner. Made with cheese, eggs, milk, flour and sugar, these fluffy pastries are a must-try when exploring the town's culinary heritage.
It is a very small cafe with tasty pastries and desserts. It is also very close to the Sintra train station. The local taxi driver who drove us down from the mountain was also recommending it.
Arda T — Google review
I really enjoyed stopping at this place. Absolutely loved the cappuccino! The staff was very friendly too. I found the queijadas a little too sweet for my liking. Loved the other pastries. The staff was friendly too.
Reni A — Google review
A traditional place with a cute terrace and good looking pastries. I tried the traditional queijada and I didn't expect it to be that good! So sweet but with an intense flavor, I really recommend it! It's small but perfect for a sweet treat.
Rocio Z — Google review
Friendly guy behind the counter. I needed to go to the toilet, and very understandably he said I could if I bought something. I chose their ‘specialty’, a small cute pastry which is very tasty indeed! Interior is absolutely charming and beautiful, they seem like a place with heart that exists for a long time and has a classy vibe. The other pastries looked really amazing and high quality too.
Flora R — Google review
Various options of desserts from the traditional queijada to almond cakes… The pity is that you have to ask what are the cakes as they do put description…

Quiet a nice bakery and the staff there were also super friendly

We stoped here on our way out of Sintra. We had the best toast here. We ordered it to go but we had to eat 1/3 right away. When you order it to go open the lid or it will go wet from steam. It is made with lots of butter ham and cheese plus oregano on top is great. Don't hesitate and get some.

This place is amazing and incredibly affordable. Not a tourist trap, but a genuine Portuguese restaurant! We had starters, main dish (mine was fish and fries), wine, water, dessert and coffee for only €12,50 (as part of yellow cab tour). Great crew, fast WiFi and tasty food. Highly recommend it :)

We're in B&B 5 mins walk away from this small local restaurant. It was an obvious choice and a good one, lovely staff, excellent Portuguese menu, well cooked, well seasoned with a carafe of house wine for 4 came to a very reasonable €60 including tip, if you're passing or in the area this is a good choice.

For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Búzio. Not quite as popular as Quinta da Regaleira, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Praia das Azenhas do Mar, also known as Praia das Maçãs, is a hidden gem off the beaten track near Sintra. The beach is small and often empty due to strong currents, but it offers a natural saltwater pool perfect for families or those seeking calmer waters. Visitors can enjoy stunning sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean and witness dramatic waves crashing against the rocks. For a more relaxed experience, there are options for cocktails and light meals nearby.
One of the best places to reach the Atlantic Ocean. Great views, some options for food and drinks nearby. It’s definitely a must if you’re around!

A must see village and beach (with tidal pool for swimming). The village and its white house’s on the hill side are spectacular. From the other side the steps up look line hard work. The day we visited the beach the beach was closed (red flagged) due to the heavy surf.

Praia das Azenhas do Mar is absolutely stunning! The view of the ocean crashing against the cliffs is breathtaking, and it’s the perfect spot to relax, take in the scenery, and breathe the fresh ocean air. The little village perched on the cliffs makes the view even more magical.

Seafood restaurant
Restaurant
Búzio is a renowned upscale restaurant located in Colares, offering a traditional Portuguese dining experience with an extensive wine selection. Specializing in fresh seafood, the restaurant's proximity to the sea provides an ideal setting to savor its high-quality cuisine. While not the most budget-friendly option, Búzio is praised for its delicious mariscadas and well-executed meals. The elegant ambiance features crisp linens and attentive wait staff, although some minor service aspects may vary.
I went to this restaurant many years ago, after many years I can visit it and it doesn't disappoint, the food was excellent. shrimp curry was delicious. There is a huge variety of seafood and fish.
Hugo M — Google review
1. The service is rude and doesn’t speak proper English even tho they present as they do 2. The food was somewhat okay…octopus was covered in oil so you could taste oil much more than the actual octopus, grouper was too salty, but potatoes were good and the oysters were quite good too. 3. They brought starters without even asking - this is rude. We then said we don’t need them. 4. We asked for grouper and salad and the waiter brought fish with salad and potatoes which we didn’t order.. 5. Too long until came to take the order even tho the waiters were casually walking around.. without even looking at us. have no clue what are those good reviews, probably they are nice to you if you are local only. Do not recommend this place.

Very fresh seafood and great steak combined with an excellent selection of wines and first-class service. Also, the deserts were just amazing! They showed a lot of care for my son and did even let him hold some of the life lobsters. Thanks for a great evening!

Great seafood and shellfish, we had a great lunch , the service was slow and having young children did not seem to make a difference for us. But the food was delicious

This restaurant was recommended by our tour guy João and it was definitely a great choice. We enjoyed every meal here including the curry shrimp with almond rice 10/10, the garlic shrimp with garlic rice was so tasty and good. The fish soup is a must so much flavors in it. Definitely would try this place again.
Darshanie D — Google review
First of all the food was amazing. The chefs did an amazing job for everyone and we couldn’t ask for a better meal. Unfortunately the service lacked behind when they for example gave a wrong dish to one of our guests, and forgot to bring out the wine until after the food was out. Lastly, the acoustics were very good in the restaurant.
Sofus T — Google review
I loved this restaurant. You can tell the chef owner takes her craft seriously. The large kitchen is well organized, the restaurant contains live tanks with crabs, lobsters, and a display of fresh fish and seafood. The lunch was fabulous. And the steak grilled on a hot stone at the table was unique and I really enjoyed cooking my own steak. Fries were awesome as was the salad. Octopus was tender and delicious.

Outdoor Activities
Praia da Adraga is a stunning North Atlantic beach located near the town of Almocageme, Sintra in Portugal. The picturesque inlet features a sandy shoreline, rock formations, and clear waters. Visitors can enjoy exploring the area and playing on the beach, although it can get crowded during hot summer months. There is also a secluded adjacent beach that is easily accessible by foot.
Really nice sand beach, that is not so easy to reach, since the path is through the overpopulated village, with a lot of cars, and the beach has only one parking. If you expect comfort, restaurants and any all the amenities of standard city beaches, this is not for you. But if you want secluded beach, with big waves and beautiful sunset, than this beach is the right thing for the end of the day.
Srdjan M — Google review
Amazing beach! Cost us 17 euro for a bolt ride from Lisbon to get here in 2025. Water cold, big waves and interesting caves to explore. Washrooms and restaurant on site. Highly recommend coming here.

Getting here isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely worth it! We took a train from Lisbon Rossio (€2.8 one-way ticket) to Portela de Sintra, then bus 1254 (€2.6 one-way ticket) to Praia Grande, and finally an Uber for about €6. The whole trip took around 2 hours, but the beach is stunning: wide, scenic, and with amazing ocean views

Great beach with parking lot right in front of entry. Very scenic, due to rocks and arch (quite some instagram activities). Walkways ease access e.g. for disabled people. Shower to wash off salt water and/or sand available. Restaurant for drinks or lunch/dinner. Public restrooms available as well.
NordWind&Fire # — Google review
This beach is a truly beautiful place right on the ocean. The view is absolutely stunning, and there's plenty of space for everyone to relax, enjoy the scenery, or take a dip in the water. There's even a spot right on the beach where you can grab a bite to eat or enjoy your favorite drink.
Paweł J — Google review
Nice but really windy and kind of difficult to get to and get out. If you are a tourist and is planning to get there and leave by uber I would recommend another more accessible beach. Not really a good spot to swim as well
Patricio B — Google review
Secluded local beach for some peace and quiet. Worthwhile to spend half a day and just relax. Difficult to reach unless you have a vehicle or hire a tuktuk/shareride. There is a carpark by the beach as well as public toilets and a restaurant. Sand grade is 8/10 with a darker golden brown colour. Sea water is clear and no seaweed when I went which makes a perfect beach. Although the Atlantic Ocean is freezing (15-17 C) in contrast to summer temperatures (close to 30 C) in July. If you want calm waters and white sand, head south to Troia

Praia da Aroeira is a stunning beach destination that attracts both locals and tourists. While some beaches in the area are easily accessible with amenities like restaurants, cafes, and parking, Praia da Aroeira offers a more untouched natural beauty. The beach boasts beautiful views from the cliffs, but getting down to the shore may be challenging due to steep and slippery paths. However, for those willing to make the effort, it's a rewarding experience surrounded by beautiful countryside and friendly locals.

A beautiful viewpoint for watching the sunset. There is a path that allows you to go all the way down to the beach, though we decided not to. Parking is available along the road. In our opinion, the view here is even better than from Cabo da Roca.
Natalia P — Google review
The path is steep, but not so difficult if you watch your step and don’t rush. There is no sand on the shore, just pebbles, so if you’re looking for a more inviting place, choose Ursa a few hundreds meters to the north. It’s much better, but there will be more people of course.

So incredible place! Strong wind and incredible view from high mountain. But many tourists here so you need to find place to take the pictures. There was a small road beside the main way, access there and you can have a better checkin point. Can only park 2-3 cars there so you should look into it from the highway first.
Nicky V — Google review
Beautiful place, the view is imazing. It is impossible to drive the car till the end of the route shown by googlemaps. You need to walk the last 400 meters to the cliff. But then it is very steep and windy. This is not a place for children or small kids. But for adults it is a must to visit. The water is perfect. The meadow with the flower is breathtaking. You may take perfect pictures.

From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly kind and welcoming - especially the lovely gentleman who served us. The food was absolutely amazing, and the all-you-can-eat style meant we could enjoy as much as we wanted. Since it was my birthday, they even surprised me with a few freebies, which made the night feel extra special. One of the coolest things was their hot stone gimmick, where you can cook your own steak right at the table - it's not only delicious but adds a really fun atmosphere to the whole experience. Everything about this place was perfect, and I honestly couldn't recommend it enough. Definitely a 5-star experience!

Adega das Azenhas is a renowned restaurant located in a centuries-old former winery, offering traditional Portuguese cuisine with premium ingredients. It's a favorite among locals, serving generous portions of home-style food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The rustic decor and lack of TV create an authentic dining experience. Despite its popularity, securing a table can be challenging, so booking in advance is recommended.
Wow what an experience, we got to try every Portuguese food. The Barnacles were something new to me and they were surprisingly very nice, I could have eaten a lot more but had to save space for the main dish which was the duck rice, it is a big portion and very filling but tasty. The calamari strips were a good starter. The various desserts were great 👍 overall a fantastic restaurant. Reservations are a must and the waiters were friendly.

I can’t confirm all the good reviews. Come here for the food (only the fish - the other dishes were disappointing). The view is amazing, you can see waves splashing against the coast from your seat. However, the staff was quite rude. The waiter was condescending and tried to be funny. Not professional at all - we felt uncomfortable. A year or two ago this place was great, but I can’t recommend it anymore.

Great food in an absolutely gorgeous setting! The staff is also amazing. We had a little incident with our 4 year old daughter, who got sick while we were there. Our waiter, Marcos, was an absolute gem. He tried to make our daughter feel better by giving her a balloon, helped us clean up and set her up for a nap in her stroller, giving us blankets. We were really touched by his kindness and professionalism. Our dinner was amazing and the view is stunning. Definitely recommend this place.

Incredible meal with an unbeatable view of the sunset, either reserve or come a little early to snag an ideal spot on the patio. The food here I pricey but justified based on the location, quality of the food and the service provided. Our server Nuno was fantastic, super friendly and gave amazing recommendations. The beef tartare was interesting, a very balanced dish that was honestly quite surprising. The scarlet shrimp paella was fantastic, super deep shrimp flavour and the scarlet shrimp themselves were unbelievable soft, the juice from the head pours right out, to elevate the rice that much more. Clams were also good with some really fantastic bites but I don’t think this is my preferred style of preparation. Not pictured was a chocolate mousse dessert that was also very good.

I got goosebumps from the sunset. Portions are big, generous, tasty. This experience was very enjoyable. The communication in English is available, so don't worry about language if you're a tourist from another country. I recommend coming here with family. One dish is more than enough for one person, but if you have leftovers, you can ask the staff to pack them for you. Also, I highly recommend the goat cheese salad and the craft soda.

Awesome service and proper wine portions! The staff was attentive without being intrusive, and the atmosphere made the whole experience even better. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for quality dining with great view

Stunning location on the beach, a really friendly vibe, with excellent fish and local specialties. Our waiter Jao was excellent. We had a fantastic lunch.

Came here for a Linner starting at 4 PM. The setting right on the beach is spectacular. The octopus was among the best I have had, including substantial travel in Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The small clams and the mussels were also excellent. Most interesting was the Burrata. , which came with an interesting pesto sauce. We had a 3 1/2 year-old and one and a half year-old grandson with us and they were very accommodating. Highly recommend.

Great service and super tasty food! The fish was filleted right at our table by the manager herself — such a nice touch. Everyone from the receptionist to the waiters was super friendly and attentive. Loved the vibe, the view is absolutely stunning, and it’s just the perfect spot to wind down and enjoy the evening. Would totally come back!

Located at an impressive 488 meters above sea level, the Sanctuary of Peninha is a Baroque chapel and early-1900s palace situated on a rugged outcrop. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic coast and the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Originally a shrine for Christian pilgrims seeking fertility, it was later expanded into a summer residence before being acquired by the Moon Company. Plans are underway to restore its historical significance and former beauty.
Haven’t been there for a while and it really surprised me! Beautiful scenery (specially going uphill from Malveira da Serra and a lot to explore on the top of the hill from the old monastery to many walks. Found out that semi wild horses and cows were introduced there in 2022. Was very nice to see them and explore around even with the fast changing weather.

Portugal offers lots of opportunities to be close to nature. This time, we decided to explore Sintra with company called Greentrekker for a Sunday walk in the nature reserve. We saw enchanted forest with big stone formations, best views of the valley and ocean, and even visited centuries old woman monastery. Our guide was amazing, passionate about nature, environment and I really loved it. We saw lots of people doing trail running and cycling. Amazing place

Best view in Sintra. Worth visiting
Daniel — Google review
You can reach this place through the most beautiful hiking trails crossing through deep forest, magic little ponds and panoramic high ground. This is, in fact. the mountain of Sintra plunging into the ocean, at the westernmost point of Europe, where Cape of Roca meets the sea. In the area there is a colony of semi-wild horses brought here from the northern tip of Portugal. They are "garranos", a very resistant type of mountain small horse acting like natural bush cleaners and thus helping to prevent the ignition of wild fires. Commanding 360 views from the top.

Best views ive seen in my life. It takes a lot of time to get up (by car only) but it is definetely worth the time. Very windy and cold

This is a great view point from the western edge of the Sintra mountain about 30 min drive from major Sights. If you like 180 and 360 views this is the place. It can get windy so keep that in mind. Pick a sunny day and you wiling regret it.

Cape Roca Lighthouse

Historical landmark
Farol do Cabo da Roca, also known as Cabo da Roca Lighthouse, is a historic landmark in Portugal. Built in 1772, it stands as the third oldest lighthouse on the Portuguese coast. Situated at the most western point of Europe, it offers breathtaking views of the coastline and powerful winds that add to its dramatic allure. Visitors can explore the towering cliffs and enjoy stunning sunset vistas.
Great place to watch the sunset, stop and chill a little bit. Don't hesitate and buy the pinapple cocktail. This will boost the vibe. If you cross the fence to go to the cliff near the lighthouse you can be finned, so go back down the road where fence ends and there you can go freely with a better view also without risk of getting a fee. Also more pathways to walk. Check the video posted.

The westernmost point of continental Europe! Beautiful lighthouse, incredible cliffs and stunning panorama over the Atlantic Ocean. You can also buy a certificate that you are in the westernmost point of the continent. 11€ don’t miss it. Plenty of parking around.

Pretty nice place. It has a bus stop that is connected to Sintra. It's very windy there so wear warm and wind resistant clothes. From this lighthouse you can walk to Ursa Beach for a very beautiful hike.

Breathtaking, stunning location at the westernmost tip of mainland Europe! Definitely recommend to visit when staying in Sintra area. There is also bus route that takes you here from Sintra.

It is said always windy! If you plan to hike down to the water, it is class 3.5 trail with rope climbing back. It is not exposed. The proper hiking shoes with drinking water are highly recommended. All of the round rocks were loose and moving. You will see great views beside the a water.

Faro do Cabo da Roca is an absolute gem and a must-visit if you’re exploring Portugal! The iconic red lighthouse adds a vibrant splash of color against the dramatic cliffs and endless ocean views. The scenery is nothing short of breathtaking—you can take in panoramic views of Azóia village nestled in the distance and the rolling mountains that surround it. The location feels both peaceful and powerful, perched at the westernmost point of mainland Europe. It’s a perfect spot for photos, reflection, or simply soaking in the natural beauty. Highly recommend adding this to your itinerary—you won’t be disappointed!

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Sintra, Casal Santa Maria is a charming family-owned winery that has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Founded by Baron Bodo Von Bruemmer after the loss of his wife, this vineyard began its journey in 1962 and has since blossomed into a beloved destination for wine enthusiasts.
Got there with no reservations, but we were super well hosted, tasted some wine, learned about the rich history of the place and its wine. We walked around after the staff showed us where to go and what to see on our own, with a glass in hand. The barrels and wine making areas are only showed in booked tours but having no expectations , it didn’t bother us at all, after all they don’t have infinite staff to show people the massive estate all the time. There is a gate and parking too :)

Rich history of the winery shared in an entertaining way. The grounds are lovely, especially the flowers. Had wine tasting and snacks.

When booking, I was mainly just interested in the wine tasting, but boy did the tour/history of Casal Santa Maria keep me on the edge of my seat. Don't bother reading about the history before coming--just enjoy the ride.
Isaac S — Google review
Left with a couple bottles of wine 🍷 and absolutely loved the dogs! 🥰 Cute, family-owned, winery. It’s small enough that the wine tasting occurs in the owner’s home, but in a section that functions for business/tastings. Great views of the town and ocean from all the glass windows. The owners are friendly and welcoming. We took a tour with Carlos as our guide. I really enjoyed learning about the how this winery started. The husband and wife who started the winery are grandparents of the current owner and the founder was 96 years when he started the winery. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 106! I’d say it’s worth the visit!

We had a welcome event for our wedding at Casal Santa Maria and it was absolutely incredible and the most breathtaking venue. It was the perfect event to kickstart our wedding weekend. Pedro, our tour guide, was enthusiastic and a fantastic story teller. Our guests (and us) absolutely loved him. The wine and appetizers served were delicious. We could not imagine a more perfect afternoon. Thank you so much to Helena for helping us organize the event and creating such a beautiful afternoon!!

We hosted the most incredible pre-wedding event at Casal Santa Maria! The whole team were so welcoming and so kind, and just made us feel so at home! They gave us a beautiful explanation of the history and story of Casal Santa Maria, and then we had some incredible wine and delicious canapés (and they can accommodate vegan!) and we played tennis in the sun! Everything was so perfect and we cannot recommend enough! Thank you so much 🍷🎾

A beautiful winery above in the mountains of Lisbon is Casal Santa Maria. The young winemaker knows stories about ancestors and the history of the origins of the winery. The beautiful estate surrounded by vines makes the trip. Rose, white and of course red wines of the middle class are produced here.
Markus F — Google review
Beautiful hidden winery. The quality of the wine is great, with a good variety on show. The tour was really interesting, and not just focused on wine making but on the incredible history of the property and the character who brought it back to life after it was abandoned in the 1920s. The staff were really friendly and helpful, the views are amazing, and they have a beautiful garden as well as the vines.

What a treasure! Delicious wines, full of flavor, crafted mostly in an old-world style. The tour was extraordinarily insightful, and was finished with a tasting of four different wines.
Garry C — Google review
Great wine tour for €30 per person which we thought was a bit expensive but the wines were well worth it. Booked ahead via email and had very prompt replies. The owner was very knowledgable and was fascinating to listen to. The wine region and maker seemed very unique to others we have visited before. No filtration was used during the wine process so the wines were vegan which very much suited my dairy intolerant wife!

Wonderful experience. The owner gave a history of the grapes in the region, excellent wines for tasting.

Monuments & Statues
Perched on a hilltop 426 meters above sea level, Anta de Adrenunes is an ancient arrangement of granite stones forming a small passage. This megalithic monument may have served as a burial structure during the Stone Age. The site offers stunning views of Cabo da Roca and the surrounding region. Accessible via a challenging path, it is well-preserved due to its remote location in Serra de Sintra.
Love it! If you want relaxation, meditation, amazing 😍 place to visit! There weren't many people! All is good 😊
Mariia B — Google review
Surprising pre-historical site well into one the most remote areas of Serra de Sintra. The access is not easy which makes for the protection of the site. Close to this spot you get yourself in the unusual and privileged position of seeing water both to your left and to your right (the ocean and the big estuary of the Tejo river before it reaches Lisbon) making you aware of being in the Lisbon Peninsula.
Jorge B — Google review
Unreachable. You park your car , walk uphill for 2 km, and there is no way to even get close to the site. I met many people on the trail, nobody could get near it. And they seem to be logging nearby.
Randy W — Google review
It is a structure made up of several stones, between which there is a passage about 5 meters high. This passage may have served as a collective necropolis during the megalithic period. It is located at the top of a hill that dominates the landscape around Cabo da Roca and the vast region that extends to the north of the Serra de Sintra. The access can be done following the road after Peninha, a path to the right of the road will lead to the hilltop where Adrenunes is located. Easy access walking 15 minutes on that path. Marvelous 360° views of the Atlantic ocean, cabo da roca, pena palace and morrish castle. Recent excavations done there revealed human made foundations on the structure, but the Anta itself is a natural monument that probably was used due to its particular shape and location that overlooks the westernmost point of Europe (cabo da roca).
Mr L — Google review
We visited on July 2025. We parked on a dirt road less than 1km from the site, since the gate was open. We saw some posts with red and yellow markers and then a sign for the anta, which gave us confidence we were on the right path. But then we missed the turn from the dirt road into the forested area. On Google maps, we could tell that we were going farther away. So, we turned back and barely saw a sign, which had been covered in vegetation. We poked around and found a trail about 0.3 km away as the crow flies. Only walkers (no bikes can get through), some downed trees, and the looped around it. Then we found it! Was cool.
Theresa G — Google review
Entrance: 38°46'34.1"N 9°27'47.2"W I would definitely use this path. Any other attempt would surely end in huge scratches on my legs and arms :) Its not easy to see by walking by.

Pensão Sisudo, located in Colares, offers a diverse Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on Portuguese and Iberian dishes. The restaurant serves a variety of grilled meats such as black pork and fresh fish, along with options like stuffed squid and tuna tataki for sharing. It's known for its great value lunch menu that changes daily. Visitors praise the warm service and delicious food, including pumpkin soup, cod in olive oil, and chocolate mousse.
Really great restaurant! Everything was very fresh and delicious! What we especially enjoyed was garlic shrimps (amazing!) make sure to dip some bread in the sauce and shrimp tempura (very good). Everything else was also great and the portions were generous. The atmosphere was super cosy and the service was friendly. Will 100% return to try other options on the menu. Thank you!

The best meal we had in all of Portugal. The food was so delicious, it tasted like home. We came here with our tour guide, who picked the dishes for us, and trust me, everything we tasted was so good and made with love. Do NOT miss out on desserts. The lemon pudding and chocolate mousse are to DIE for. If you’re visiting Sintra, don’t go for lunch anywhere else.

Pensão Sisudo is a really nice budget friendly guesthouse. The rooms are small but cozy and comfortable. Breakfast is really nice, breakfast is left in boxes in the kitchen, it includes a loaf of bread, chorizo, ham, cheese and butter. Also there are always great fruits, yogurts and coffee available. It is worth mentioning that the entrance to the guesthouse is very narrow and the stairs are really steep, so its not suitable for people with disabilities. The best part is the restaurant downstairs—it’s absolutely fantastic. Everything isl delicious, especially the octopus! Highly recommend visiting it. (But Its closed on Sunday evening) Overall, this guesthouse is a really nice budget friendly option for not demanding travellers!

An experienced tour guide brought us to this restaurant for lunch, on the way to Cabo da Roca. He got it right, the meal was delicious. Try the lime mousse dessert, it beggars belief. Small anecdote: We noticed a local VIP eating there, a successful big wave surver who lives in the region, which may indicate a place well-regarded by the locals. (Please note that this review is only about the restaurant, we didn't stay at the hotel.)

Excellent food at their restaurant, beef steak tataki was amazing. Accommodation was lovely too, small family run bnb with attention to detail. They really took care of us.

The apartment looked nothing like the photos. Strong, unpleasant smell that got into all our clothes. The restaurant Adega Vadia in Sintra is a great choice for Portuguese food. The quality of every dish was excellent, and the service was great. It can be a bit difficult to get a table, but it's well worth the wait.
Such a gem. I highly recommend eating at this special place. Quaint and cute. Delicious food. I had the prawns, rice, and salad. Wholesome, fresh, and hearty. Lovely service as well! Cannot recommend enough!

I would not have discovered this gem of a place tucked away in the hills of Sintra had it not been for our local guide Marta. An unassuming restaurant which serves authentic Portuguese cuisine is highly recommended! I loved the veal croquette, the veal with pickled veggies, vegetarian dish of mushroom and peppers, the soup (made from local herbs) and being a fish-lover- the fish cakes! For dessert, the cookie cake is highly recommended. This is where I tasted my first Portuguese "beer-nut" (Lupin beans). The owner was attentive and you can eat as much as you like.

Untrustful staff not exciting dishes. Feels like my mum made quick dishes with left over ingredients. No recommend at all. Worst ever restaurant I ever visited in Portugal.

Really enjoyed the food and staff were super friendly. We got s table no problem on a weekday in winter but apparently on weekends or summer booking is required. Tapas vary in sizes so worth asking the staff if you should order extra portions of something you like the look of.

An absolute gem, tucked away near Sintra. The service was some of the best in Portugal. Very friendly and spoke excellent English. The tapas dishes, while small in size, delivered an array of fantastic and unique tastes. The trilogy of tapas (sausage, mushrooms, and croquette meat) was fresh and delightful. Pro tip: save room for dessert. The Cookie Cake was incredible. Both in texture and taste. Prices are more than reasonable. The music played (radio) was right on point: 80s pop/soundtracks. Would definately recommend. Cash only.

Restaurant
Moinho Dom Quixote is a charming and popular spot with a wonderful atmosphere. While it may be a bit challenging to secure a table due to its popularity, the attentive staff and top-notch food and drinks make it worth the effort. The place offers a lovely view, especially during sunset, making it an ideal location for spending an afternoon. However, some visitors have noted that getting the attention of waiters can be difficult at times.
One of our goals while in Portugal was to watch the sunset every night, and I saw a few reviews for Moinho Dom Quixote raving about the view, and, while you aren't facing the sunset directly, the overall atmosphere and view are top notch. The service is whatever--they are running around trying to deal with a fully booked restaurant, so you need to flag them down if you want another glass of wine (good luck getting spare napkins). The food is acceptable; it's hard to mess up a burger or potatoes. But really, the star of the night, and our trip in Portugal, happened to be the surprise acoustic couple playing songs in both Portuguese and English. They put on an amazing show for many hours on end; if it's like this every Friday night, this is a must visit.

This garden restaurant is an authentic place with fantastic ocean view, amazing atmosphere and great cuisine! We ordered leek soup and beef steak - both were awesome 👏 This place is usually very busy - you may have to wait or book in advance. Also local parking is very small, in case it’s full you may explore rad side spots down the road

What a place Moinho Dom Quixote!!!! Tucked away at the corner of the hill, Moinho Dom Quixote is a delightful gem that’s well worth the visit. Finding it feels like stumbling upon a hidden treasure, though parking can be a bit of a challenge—arrive early to snag a spot, as we learned! We waited about 25-30 minutes for a table for two, but the wait was absolutely worth it. We were lucky to score a fantastic table in the sun, which set the tone for a lovely experience. The service was solid—friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The menu isn’t overly pricey, making it a great value for the quality you get. Do note that it can get quite chilly in the evening, so don’t hesitate to ask for one of their cozy blankets to keep warm. The vibe here is fantastic, with a quirky, well-organized setup that’s both charming and inviting. The tables are thoughtfully arranged, and the decor has a whimsical, unique flair that adds to the overall charm. The beautiful garden is a highlight, offering a serene backdrop to your meal. The food? Simply incredible. Everything we ordered was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented—check out the photos for a glimpse of what we enjoyed! They also have a disabled parking space, which is a thoughtful touch, and the place is pet-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along. Overall, Moinho Dom Quixote nails it with its combination of great food, vibrant atmosphere, and quirky charm. We’re already looking forward to our next visit. Highly recommend!

Gorgeous location and restaurant. Such a pleasant surprise as we did not know much about the restaurant. There was a long wait for lunch on sunday but we got there early and enjoyed out view of the ocean with seats outside in the garden. Amazing experience! This was one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever been to, and you could even eat there! The service was friendly and personal. The food was amazing and the prices were good considering the popularity of the restaurant and the locally sourced biological products they use. Incredibly beautiful views and a wonderful atmosphere! Be prepared for a potentially long wait to get in, and parking can be tricky on certain days, especially during peak hours or weekends. However, once you’re seated, it’s absolutely worth it! The food is delicious, thoughtfully prepared, and full of flavor. The staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming, creating a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommended – a place where both the setting and the service make it truly memorable!

Great views. Great food. The service is slow and you have to ask 2-3 times if you want something from waiters, and be quite pushy. But this is likely irrelevant because of these stunning views, nice vibe and good food. I’d probably like to see some modern music playing on the background to have this modern vibe, like a lounge type thing. Very interesting to see this place at night.

Nestled near the breathtaking Cabo da Roca, Refúgio da Roca is a delightful haven for food lovers seeking a memorable dining experience. This charming restaurant offers an array of delectable dishes that highlight the rich flavors of Portuguese cuisine. From their hearty fish soup and savory rice with shellfish to perfectly grilled octopus and cod, every bite is a celebration of local ingredients. The unique grilling method using bay laurel sticks infuses meats with subtle aromas that elevate each dish.
What an absolutely delightful evening! The clams were hands-down the most delicious I've had in a year—perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor. My husband couldn't stop raving about the squid skewer, and for good reason—it was a standout dish. The wine complemented our meal beautifully, rounding out an already exceptional dining experience. This little gem is a true find, and we can't wait to return!

Great place to have grilled squid with Broccoli. Mine missed its head😁… which I’ve seen on other photos of the review. The setting outside is amazing. Friendly staff.

Very good food. We tried the Grilled sardines, grilled chicken and the grilled pork sausage and all of them were delicious in their own way. The chocolate mousse was also very interesting as it had been chilled to an ice cream consistency and was supposedly a local dish as well. As per my understanding, it's also one of the closest restaurants to Cabo da Roca.

Day 5

Keep it simple
For day 5, these 7 places should be enough to fill your day with something exciting to do in Colares. Start the day with Palácio e Parque Biester and make your way through the city to get to Quinta de San Michel, Vinhos de Janas. This should take about 8 hours of your day.

Palácio e Parque Biester is a charming old palace with beautiful gardens, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling tourist spots in Sintra. Unlike the more popular palaces in the area, it's not crowded, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. The tea house on the premises serves delicious and affordable meals, providing a tranquil dining experience away from the masses. The ticket officer provides helpful information for navigating the park and palace.
Literally a breath of fresh air when you are used to the other palaces. This is the way it should be when visiting such a place. We had a lovely walk throught the gardens, hearing the birds and sometimes being followed by some ‘cheeky’ cats. Lovely visit overall, would 100% recommend. It was our best palace experience that day.

Absolutely incredible palace. There was also no crowds around 5:30pm, and I had the whole place to myself. 10/10 recommend! Make sure to climb to the overlook view point as well for incredible views.

What a beautiful Garden! It reminded me for some reason about the beauty & the beast castle. I love how much effort was put in the garden and each individual section. It took us about 2 hours to look at everything and enjoy all the different view points and plants. Unfortunately some of the garden was closed off due to some fallen trees. But we most definitely will be back to explore the rest. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Magnificent place. Palace with full of knowledge and high taste of design. Perfectly detailed every centimeter of the palace and its yard. Yard full of trees and bushes. Worth to visit in any kind of temperature and weather.

The castle and grounds are beautiful. It was not crowded. The rooms are fully furnished and give you a great idea of what living there must have been like. The castle attendant, Milena, is marvelous, charismatic and was extremely helpful. I highly recommend visiting. Randy, San Francisco, CA

A delightful surprise. Beautiful interior wall paintings and carved wood. Felt like a home. The internal light (many windows), the views, the gardens were all magical. And the twist with the references to an interesting film was fascinating and suitably unnerving. Such good value and a welcome quiet oasis from battling the Sintra crowds elsewhere.

I think it worth 15 euro. It has a great views, you don't need to buy a bus ticket for it. You need 1-2 hours

Nestled in the forested mountain range of Sintra, this picturesque town is a must-visit destination just a day trip away from Lisbon. With over ten national monuments including palaces and ancient ruins, it offers a rich historical experience and stunning photo opportunities. The area is easily accessible by public transportation from Lisbon.
One of the most beautiful hikes I’ve ever done. Carry a rain coat even if Google says no rain, trusting your intuition. Probably my first hike when it was also raining. The mist covered the view. Yet, it was so beautiful. There is a cafe which sells water, soft drinks, chips and popcorn. Seemed to be dog friendly except for the mini museum. Wear comfy shoes. Took a bus to return after finishing the sintra palace and the Pena palace.

The Ticket office Pena Park is a must-see spot in the Sintra region, offering a botanical sanctuary and historical landmarks like the Castelo dos Mouros. The park is arranged on several hills, providing shaded areas and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can explore hidden gems and less crowded spots while taking their time to wander around. Accessible from Lisbon by taxi or from Sintra by bus or hiking, it's recommended to arrive early to avoid crowds during high season.
Do some research before you go and you will save yourself a lot of headache and wasted time. I didn't go inside but the grounds outside are worth visiting and exploring. Take your time and explore, there is more to see than at first glance.

Buy tickets ahead of time or plan to get a ticket then hike or drive somewhere rise and come back. 5:30 ticket with place closing at 6 dues not give enough time if it want to take your time or read about stuff.
Kevin M — Google review
Impressive place to visit but too many people during touristic season. Visit as soon as it opens. Not worth paying extra for bus ride up hill 450m unless you have reduced mobility.
Alen O — Google review
So overcrowded it's completely spoilt. You have to wait in line for 30+ minutes even for your 'time slot' with about 500 other people in there at the same time. You are herded through without time to view properly or take photos. There are so many people, photos are almost impossible anyway. There are many other palaces in the Lisboa region far superior and far less crowded.
Jo D — Google review
If you're hiking up and someone tries to pick you up, make sure you understand the cost up front and just say no even if they try to manipulate you into getting into their vehicle. Some driver mislead us and then wanted 30 euro (35.16$) for a 7 minute ride. He then tried to get us arrested for not giving into his scheme. Just a terrible experience that tainted the whole exhibit for us. We ended up giving him 20 euro so he could leave us alone. Listen to your gut if someone offers you something in this area. From what we've seen, they're not really trying to help you, but take from you.
VC — Google review
You're dropped by taxi/bus in the middle of nowhere to wait in half an hour long queues, just to buy tickets. When you eventually make it to the top of the queue, you'll find out that you have to wait another 3.5hrs to get into the palaces if you decide to buy a ticket. There was nowhere a sign to indicate waiting time!We had to get another tuk tuk ride to the bottom of the hill as waiting this long wasn't an option and walking downhill for an hour also wasn't an option because of safety. This place is a tourist hell and you should avoid it by any means otherwise you are going to drop money on taxis/tuk tuks to get nowhere, see nothing and waste your precious holiday!Terrible waste of time.
G M — Google review
Woeful lack of visitor information. Website is even worse. It’s the only attraction that offers a shuttle bus that does not take you to the actual destination. In short, take pictures from a distance and don’t let these cowboys rip you off.
Tom H — Google review
The service Is quite good. What is bad are all the buses and aggressive taxi and tuk tuk drivers. Busses stay on, filling the place with smoke and noise, while you are in line to pay for your entrance ticket. And they keep honking while the drives stay around smoking and polluting the air. I’m am really hoping the palace is worth this stress!

Visitors can enjoy tasting sessions featuring a variety of wines such as Ramisco for red meats and Malvasia for fish and seafood.
This was our first time to a Portuguese winery and gosh, San Michel set the bar extremely high! We arrived not knowing that we needed to book a reservation ahead of time, however, Marta took time away from pruning and opened just for us. We had a wonderful experience and the wines were incredible. Thank-you Marta for giving us a taste of the incredilbe San Michel experience! Your kindness and warm welcome made the experience even more memorable. Highly recommend this winery for anyone interested in an intimate wine tour and tasting experience located in the beautiful countryside of Portugal!

My wife and I had an absolutely amazing time today, touring Quinta de San Michel! The gentleman who gave us the tour and tasting was exceptional! Sintra is an amazingly quaint town, and the trip from Lisbon is short and well worth it. The wine was amazing, paired with a yummy snack. We would highly recommend this experience, and hope to visit again, and see how this small yet mighty vineyard will grow and grow. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon. Mack and Milda

Had a wonderful time learning about Portuguese wine. A boutique family owned wineyard. Martha explained the wine making process and we got to see the wineyard, how wine is pressed, stored in the barrel and processed. Ended off with wine tasting from 3 bottles for 25€ per person. The wines we tasted were retailed at 26€, 24€ and 15€. Definitely worth a visit!

Visited this winery after a morning in Sintra and ended up having one of our favourite experiences of the holiday! Alex gave a really informative and interesting tour that was super accessible to people with all levels of wine knowledge. The wines were some of the best whites I've ever had and knowing the history of the region made it feel extra special. It's a bit remote so would definitely recommend getting an uber if you're coming from Sintra but overall is so worth coming a little further out. Can't believe it was so inexpensive as well, we would have paid double the cost!!

The whole experience is awesome. The wines are great (from Malvasia and Arinto grapes), the location is beautiful with a mesmerizing view to Serra de Sintra and the hosts are as friendly as can be (and great storytellers). If you are in the region be sure to drop by and enjoy. I will most definitely repeat.

Really happy with the food here, kept ordering their dish of the day, had their horse mackerel yesterday and the rabbit cooked in red wine and it was just delicious. It’s more like a simple home cooked meal and their soups were hearty. Will happily visit this place again when in the area

A traditional Portuguese restaurant with very friendly staff and a nice rustic interior. I would love to give a 5 star but as a vegetarian/vegan… I can’t. If you are an omnivore, I would highly recommend this establishment - my friend really enjoyed her meal. I understand that this is a local hub and I love that it’s not catered to tourists, so I don’t want to come off as trying to bring my Canadian-Vegetarian opinion to traditional Portuguese dining. However, I do want to share my experience with others who may be vegan/vegetarian. There are a few vegetarian items on the menu but all of them have egg. As à vegetarian who does not eat egg, I would not have gone here if I had known this. On the menu there is a soy sausage and a veggie burger. The veggie burger was sold out (unclear whether they stopped serving it or just didn’t have it in stock at the time) and the soy sausage had no further description available. When I asked about the soy sausage, the waitress said she didn’t know what was served with it and didn’t offer to find out. I felt bad asking so just went with it. It turns out it is served with a fried egg, which is the only form of liquid/sauce to go with it. The sausage itself was good and I could easily take off the egg but it would have been nice to know. It would also be great if there was just one vegan option on the menu. Again, I understand that this is a traditional Portuguese restaurant but it’s awesome if everyone has something to eat so that the meat eaters of the group can still enjoy the delicious seafood/meat that this restaurant serves! Other than this, there were just a couple things that surprised me. First, we were served olive, bread, cheese, sardines, and tuna to start. We never ordered it so assumed that it was included. There was nothing listed that said this would be an added charge. The bread and cheese was delicious but we didn’t eat the olives or tuna/sardines so it felt kind of unfair that we had to pay for it. Also, water was not listed on the menu as having a price so we also assumed that ordering water would be free (although we are aware that at many places in Europe it is not). These are just a couple things that would make the experience better. All in all, I really love the atmosphere and staff at the restaurant and appreciate that it is traditional and caters to locals. I would definitely come back if vegan options were offered.

Grandma's cod was delicious! The traditional dish of shrimps and bread was rather bland in taste. I was served a fantastic dry wine. The service was pleasant. I highly recommend this place. Quality/Price/Quantity ratio is very good.

We heard of Sopa d’Avó on a blog and glad we made it our lunch destination on our trip to Sintra. For 8.90€ each we got olives and bread, the soup of the day, one of three meal of the day options, and a beverage (which was basically 1/2 litre of wine each). I can appreciate why this restaurant may not be for some but we appreciated the authentic Portuguese dishes and experience. Our goal was to avoid the overpriced tourist restaurants that cater to North American pallets; Sopa d’Avó was exactly what we were looking for. It ranks as one of our favourite meals/experiences of our trip.

We were off to a great with pillowy bread, garlic olives, aged goat cheese, and sardine paté. Then came the breaded and fried cod in garlic and onions, which was served with excellent home-made chips and undressed salad...in a pool of oil. The cod itself was quite salty, as was the dish of scrambled egg in leeks and julienned potatoes. Their white wine was light and crisp. Portions were huge for its price; service from a young waitress was really cute (she was excited to tell us that Portugal was playing the World Cup last night).
Kitty L — Google review
For a place named after soup they only had one soup... They served the sheep cheese appetizer with paté, sardines and butter—I’m North American so this was weird for me especially since I don’t eat fish or pâté and putting butter on cheese also seemed odd so this wasn’t really appetizing but maybe this is a European thing that I’m just not accustomed to. I got the small steak with an egg, salad and rice. The rice was bland and the steak was really undercooked for my liking. Not sure why but my whole plate was drenched with water (maybe from the rice?) but it made everything soggy including the steak. I got the rice pudding (not sure what the Portuguese name is) and it was very delicious. Overall, as a North American this spot wasn’t my cup of tea but maybe I’m just not used to authentic Portuguese food. My 2 friends seemed to enjoy their food but also agreed that the the rice was pretty bland.

Café Saudade is a historic establishment located in the former Queijadas da Mathilde cheesecake factory, which supplied King Ferdinand II with its famous queijadas de Sintra. The café was meticulously restored using recycled and regional materials, preserving its authenticity. With vibrant decor reflecting Portuguese culture, it has been a beloved gathering spot for generations of Sintra residents since the early 20th century.
My husband and I stopped here for a quick breakfast on our day trip to Sintra as it's conveniently located close to the train station. We were seated at a back room as space was limited. My best memory however was the large portion sizes of the sandwiches 😀 which tasted great as well. The wait was a tad longer maybe because of the crowd that day but we enjoyed our experience anyway. We even overheard other people in the room express their happy shock when receiving their huge sandwiches as well and joined in for a laugh 😅

This is one of the best cafés in the heart of Sintra. They have great options, both food and drinks. I highly recommend the scones, teas, and milkshakes. The atmosphere is lovely, and the different rooms are beautiful, which is why it’s so popular with tourists. Parking can be tricky, but it’s definitely a must-visit spot for anyone coming to Sintra.

Came here for brunch and was so glad to find that they offer gluten free bread! So I had the sardine sandwich which was so good! Big portion too! The sardines went so well w the goat’s cheese, pickled onion and veggies. My partner had the chicken empanada (so much filling in that tiny pastry!) and the Travesseiro de Sintra. He said the empanada was really good but would have been perfect if they had heated it up. I went back and ordered a chicken salad to go for dinner. It was also really good. Generous portion and flavours went well together. It can get crowded and for good reason!

Café Saudade was the first place we stopped for coffee when we arrived in Sintra. The staff were friendly, the space was warm and inviting, and everything we ordered hit the spot. We had the Trio Saudade, a Café Saudade, and an XL latte — all really good. The food came out fast, the portions were reasonable, and the coffee was smooth and strong. The pastries looked 🔥 If you’re just getting into Sintra, this is a great place to start your day and take a breather before exploring. Simple, friendly, and exactly what you want from a cozy café.

First of all, the service was excellent. Our waiter explained how appetizers work in Portugal, was very welcoming toward tourists, and spoke good English. He also gave us some great recommendations. The pork cheeks were absolutely delicious — the meat was so tender it practically melted in the mouth. The portion was generous, and I asked to take the rest away, which was no problem at all. The waiter even suggested what the dish would pair well with at home. The only downside was that I wasn’t asked about the side dish — I would have preferred boiled potatoes instead of fries.

Went for Sunday lunch. The place was packed to the rafters. Very local feel and vibe. Quaint and traditional! The menu had many classics of Europe, but we stuck to Portuguese cuisine. We ordered the pork leg with chestnut and the granny's beef stew. Both the plates came with potatoes on the side. To drink, we ordered water and house wine! The plates were humongous, and there was no room for dessert. Finished with a cafe. Overall a great lunch experience! Sat for 3 hours plus!

Restaurant
Apeadeiro is a charming restaurant located in the serene countryside near Sintra. Set in a restored 19th-century train station, it offers a unique dining experience with a focus on traditional Portuguese cuisine. The menu features authentic regional dishes made from fresh, seasonal ingredients, providing guests with a true taste of the local flavors. Despite its popularity among locals and visitors alike, the warm and friendly service ensures that diners feel at ease while enjoying generous portions of classic Portuguese dishes and great wines.
I was visiting Sintra and asked someone in town where to go, he said this place cooks just like his grandmother. I got the grilled cod, which normally in the U.S. I would never order, but this was great. I realized all the cod of I’ve ever had has been frozen, but this was fresh, cooked perfectly, it’s like a different fish. Also the olives are the best! The staff was really friendly and even got me a dessert to go, even though I don’t think they normally do that, they just smiled and got it for me.

A Portuguese restaurant in Sintra. Recommend by the Arroz de tamboril (Monk fish rice), the taste was not bad, but not as good as the Arroz de tamboril in Lisboa, the rice taste more like a congee. Still overall the food was good. While the service and the environment were also great, give it a try after visiting Sintra.

The food was delicious especially the grilled fish (dorado). Garlic butter shrimp was also good but just a bit of stinky taste. Kudos to the all the staff they are so very helpful and nice. The ambiance is very nice and neat.

Had the kebabs (house and Madeira style). It came with a salad and fries. The Madeira style was amazing yet the house style was okay. The portions were large but it was quite expensive. Also, ordered sangria blanco espumante and it was amazing. Overall decent food but overpriced. Service was great, but they charge a cover fee which I would have liked to know before hand.

monkfish soup = portuguese version of chinese congee 🙌🏻 my friend had it and she said she felt alive!! it's on the saltier side though. owners were kind enough to let us get settled at a table and read the menu before they opened 🙏🏻 free, stable wifi access makes it easy for travelers to navigate the area too! thank you for your hospitality, and for the complementary small pillows and port wine ☺️

This restaurant is definitely a 5 out of 5! While everything we tried was delicious, what we liked the most were the sardine and deer escalope—both dishes were exceptional, bursting with flavor. The desserts were also amazing, rounding out an incredible dining experience. The food alone would make this place worth visiting, but what truly sets it apart is the outstanding service, which went far beyond our expectations. During our visit, the service was both attentive and warm, particularly from Kareem, who made us feel genuinely welcomed. However, it wasn’t until the next day that we truly realized just how exceptional the staff is. One of our family members discovered they had left their bag at the restaurant. The bag contained all their credit and debit cards, passport, and some cash—a potentially disastrous situation. We contacted the restaurant, worried about what might have happened. When we spoke to Kareem, he immediately reassured us that the bag was safe and in his care. This news was a huge relief. We hurried back to the restaurant, where we found everything in the bag untouched—a testament to the honesty and integrity of the staff. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone who wants to enjoy authentic Portuguese cuisine, fresh seafood, and delightful traditional desserts in an environment where you can trust the people as much as the food.

Walked in for a Tuesday night dinner and was seated immediately! The interior is really big with a lot of tables. We ordered a couple items but my favorite was the monkfish with rice. It was kind of like a soup and came to our table in a large pot with a ladle. The flavors were fantastic, one of the best things I’ve eaten in Sintra. The service was good, very friendly. We received a free dessert :) The other two dishes we ordered were just okay. One of it was a seafood skewer and the other dish was a grilled cod. Both had a very simple olive oil taste and we requested some hot sauce to go with it. I find that Portuguese food tends to lack salt in general. The menus were outdated and didn’t give the food any justice. The menu with prices on it was in Portuguese only so we had to play some matching with the English menu and the Portuguese one to figure out the prices.
