Mafra National Palace is a grand European baroque palace and religious complex that includes a Royal Palace, Basilica, and Convent. Built in the 18th century, it houses significant collections of Italian sculpture, Portuguese and Italian paintings, a unique library, bell towers, organs, and an 18th-century hospital. Commissioned by King D. Joao V and Queen Dona Maria Ana of Austria to fulfill a vow made in 1711 for the birth of their first child.
This imposing Palace from the reign of King João V is the most important example of Baroque architecture in Portugal. It is the only national monument that incorporates a Royal Palace, a Basilica and a Monastery. It covers more than 40,000 m2 and has 1,200 rooms, many of which are unique. The Library is an example of this, housing knowledge in a collection of over 36,000 volumes.
Jonathan P — Google review
Mafra Palace is truly unforgettable. The scale is simply beyond imagination – endless corridors that seem to stretch forever, giving you plenty of time to reflect on the grandeur. The rooms are beautifully consistent in their style, so you never get distracted by sudden changes or surprises. The atmosphere is calm and undisturbed, with very few exhibits to clutter the space – a refreshing change from other overcrowded attractions. You can easily spend hours wandering without being interrupted by anything that might break the serene emptiness. Highly recommended for those who appreciate space, silence, and the rare luxury of having so little to look at.

Amazing sight to visit. Cathedral was being renovated but the entrance fee was 50%. Definitely worth a visit…you could see into the cathedral from inside the palace.
Donald B — Google review
Beautiful Palace. My husband is Portuguese so he didn't pay for the entrance and since half of it had just been closed for renovation; literally the day before we went, ticket was half price. Definitely will come back to see the rest of the tour.
Monica I — Google review
The Mafra National Palace is a monumental Baroque masterpiece featuring a royal palace, basilica, and one of Europe’s most stunning libraries. Located just outside Lisbon, it impresses with grand architecture, intricate details, and a rich royal history waiting to be explored.
Esrf G — Google review
This palace is unique in that it is not filled with opulence as others were. It feels real more. Also, it sits right there in the middle of the city. There are docents placed at each room or exhibit. Portugal residents, teachers, military, student researchers, and others do not pay an entry fee.
Christine B — Google review
The Royal Palace is beautiful. I definitely recommend visiting it. Unfortunately, the library is under renovation, but it should be reopened next year. Therefore, the entrance fee is reduced by 50%.
Tichomir T — Google review
The building is well-maintained and offers a vast collection. It's a shame you can't walk around the library. Access is limited to a few meters of the entrance.

Convent
Convento de Mafra is a grand 16th-century convent and palace constructed for the Order of Saint Augustine, featuring remarkable Baroque architecture and an impressive chapel. The palace boasts over 230 windows, a church, and a vast library with more than 40,000 books. Visitors recommend starting with the library due to its sheer impressiveness. Additionally, the site offers organ concerts on Sundays in the church.
One of my favorites. No waiting in line, beautiful decorations, lots of things to see and one of the biggest libraries of Portugal, over 30 000 books stored there. I vividly recommend
Eduardo S — Google review
Awesome place. Great to understanding more of Portugal's history. The library is really something!
Leonardo T — Google review
Amazing palace and church, but the library is just one of the most amazing ever. Recommend skipping everything and starting from there if you go in the afternoon as it closes earlier. They also have organ and other concerts in the church every Sunday.

Beautiful palace. Good tourist attraction if you love history. They got huge rooms, library, kitchen etc.phtos are allowed in inside but no flash.at5ached with church.we saw the wedding too
रमा P — Google review
This is a huge palace with more than 230 windows. There is a church inside. Very long corridor. We managed to see almost everything in 2.5 hours. The most interesting thing is the library, it is so big and impressive, I really wanted to take a look at a couple of books, there are more than 40,000 thousand of them. I recommend 👍
Djena V — Google review
The library is open until 12 pm and re opens at 2pm not sure if you can actually have a full access or need a special occasion to enter.
Mira A — Google review
This is an amazing structure over 300 years old. It's a World Heritage Site as it is the original building. It's well worth the visit for the kitchen and library, which is one of the oldest libraries in Europe. I must when you visit Lisbon. AM

Garden
Nature & Parks
National Parks
Jardim do Cerco, located behind the Palacio de Mafra, is an 18th-century garden originally designed for meditation and as a vegetable garden for monks. This Versaille-inspired 8-acre space is beautifully maintained and features a variety of plants and trees. Visitors can enjoy walking through the park's natural beauty, interacting with birds in spacious cages, and taking shade under the trees.
Doesn't get as much recognition as the nearby Convent but definitely is worth your visit. A chill park with plenty of space to walk around in the nature. There are many different flowers and birds as well. Although the birdies are in cages, they get plenty of space and you can interact with them. You will find a lot of shadow so it's good to visit even when it's quite warm weather.
Paulo T — Google review
Deeply upsetting. The birds are kept in small, outdated cages with bare concrete floors, metal bars, and hardly any natural elements. No enrichment, just lifeless enclosures that resemble prison cells more than habitats. This is not how animals should be treated in 2025. Avoid if you care about animal welfare.
Denise — Google review
Jardim do Cerco, beside Mafra Palace, is a magical Baroque garden filled with vibrant flowers, historic trees, and peaceful walking paths. The air feels timeless, nature feels sacred — it’s a hidden gem where history and beauty bloom in harmony, perfect for slow strolls and quiet wonder.
Esrf G — Google review
Beautiful garden with a lot of open spaces. It has a playground and picnic area making it perfect for a family day. Theres an open area you can lay on the grass and read a book or just relax. There are public toilets. Its free entry and open from 9 am to 7 pm.
Dinarte B — Google review
Amazing park, Free parking on Sundays (otherwise pay), No entry cost (at least on Sunday), Ponds with koi fish, singing birds and even peacocks. A playground for kids and a picnic area. Water fountains and all next to the amazing church. Highly Recommend. Also has Public Toilets and water fountains.
Dylson — Google review
A garden where you can sit and enjoy the green surroundings. Various plants and flowers as well as an area with birds.

One of my top fav places in Mafra! Super green and well taken care of. Also the staff was super nice and offered me some greens so I could see the birdies up close. It made me very happy!

Ethnographic museum
Aldeia Típica José Franco is a charming recreation of a traditional Portuguese village, featuring miniature houses, craft shops, and workshops. It offers an immersive experience into the rich culture and history of small villages in Portugal. The site also functions as an ethnographic museum showcasing artifacts related to blacksmithing and seamstress tools. Additionally, visitors can enjoy interacting with animals at the site's small playgrounds while younger children can freely explore the area.
I visited the museum – everything was great! I’m very satisfied and truly recommend it, especially for visits with children. There are lots of interesting details and miniatures – every corner has its own atmosphere. There’s also a café with good prices and tasty food.
Danylo K — Google review
Fantastic museum! A dream of a man came true to make everyone happy with his Art. Awesome place to spend a day with family! Well care mini farm, thematic museum from back on the days jobs, a brilliant restaurant and bakery with traditional food and fair prices. Small part of the complex restricted to people with mobile disability. Strongly recommend!
Pedro M — Google review
This village is unique. In addition to showcasing rooms that represent Portugal’s past (an old barbershop, grocery store, wine cellar, etc.), it also serves as a museum for pieces by the artist José Franco. There is also a café where they sell drinks and traditional bread from the region. The space has its own parking area, so finding a spot is not difficult. It is a place worth visiting alone or with family.
Explore J — Google review
Definitely must visit place, even if you don’t have any children or siblings. The place is full of charm of handmade earthenware and pottery and all those things are beautifully combined with each other creating the atmosphere of village in miniature.
Anastasia R — Google review
I went with my family. My girls, 7 and 11 ear old, enjoyed everything... The animal is a plus and girls loved feed the rabbits, guinea pigs and goats... The windmills make such lovely pictures... There is a store that sell beautiful pottery... The place is free but you can donate something to help keep the place in good condition...
Fifi F — Google review
I wanted to visit this place for a long time and finally it happened ☺️. Its a museum of sculptures portraying portuguese culture, history and lifestyle of ancient civilization. Its a bit outside of Mafra city center. There is a small petting zoo consisting rabbits, guinea pigs and goats. Ideal for both kids and adults.
Saima A — Google review
Amazing place. The whole village was made by the artist to remember is childhood's. They also have an amazing bakery that's is must to try on the visit.
Caglisto — Google review
To the reply of Aldeia: I understand that Aldeia Museu José Franco aims to preserve the “Saloia” culture — and I appreciate the value of cultural heritage. However, historical traditions should never justify inadequate animal welfare. Times have changed, and we now know that animals — especially social, intelligent beings like donkeys — have physical and emotional needs that must be respected. Keeping a single donkey alone in a small, barren area with no stimulation, or companions is not acceptable, regardless of tradition. If the goal is education, then let’s educate people on how we can honor the past without repeating practices that we now recognize as harmful. I truly hope that your promise of “more news soon” means a significant improvement in how animals are kept. Until then, I cannot support or recommend the site. ‐---‐----------------- I've been visiting this place every year since I was a child and always held fond memories of it. But what I saw this time was simply heartbreaking — and unacceptable. There is a donkey at the entrance, standing alone in a cramped, barren space, no enrichment, and no companion. It’s a tiny area, unfit for any animal, let alone a sensitive, social creature like a donkey. He just stands there, exposed to the sun, with nothing to do and no one to interact with. It feels more like a display than a living being. This is not only outdated — it’s cruel. In 2025, there is no excuse for keeping an animal under such conditions just to entertain visitors. What message does this send to children about respect for animals? Until this situation is addressed and the donkey is either removed or given a proper, enriched environment with companionship and space, I will not be returning — and I strongly urge others to reconsider supporting this place.

Modern European restaurant
Restaurante Escondidinho is a challenging find for non-traditional vegans, offering a pleasant ambiance and friendly staff. The highlight is their impressive selection of vegan options, including their take on the famous francesinha dish from northern Portugal. The food is skillfully prepared and delicious. However, some may find that the pricy atmosphere seems to outweigh the quality of the cuisine, making it difficult to afford frequent visits solely for the excellent food.
Absolutely great! The Christmas decor was a real treat. Very well decorated. Great service and all the dishes were of very high quality. Starters were especially great. Well priced and very highly recommended.

An amazing and unexpected find, tucked away down a small street across from the Palácio área. From the moment you walk in the door, you know it's going to be a great experience. We were lucky enough to be seated on a busy Friday night without a reservation. Definitely reserve, you don't want to miss out on this place! We met the owner, Chef Hélder, almost immediately upon being seated. We took his suggestions and started with the tagyk (so?) Which was an incredible chicken-type wrap with an interesting combination of tastes and flavors. Reminded us of something that we tasted before, then the next bite was like something we've never had before. Out server, Pedro, was attentive, friendly, and happy to answer all of our questions. Space is beautiful and relaxing. Our main dish was skirt steak. Came with an interesting assortment of mashed vegetables, potatoes, migas, cabbage. All were delicious. Steak was cooked perfectly medium-well as requested. Hands down, the best steak we have ever had in Portugal. Forgot to take pix before we started eating, so you get a "meal in progress" . Unfortunately, too full for dessert, although they looked tasty, too. Next time. Finished off the evening with a beautiful glass of tawny port and more conversation with Chef Hélder. Interesting and great guy. As for the prices...worth every penny. For what you get, it's very reasonable. Maybe a few euros more than other places, but the quality and different ingredients shine in every dish. Highly recommend this gem. We will definitely be back often...it's worth the drive!

Adega do Convento is a charming restaurant located near the National Palace of Mafra. It has a spacious interior with high ceilings and offers traditional Portuguese cuisine. The atmosphere reminds one of an old, rustic building. The menu features a wide variety of regional dishes, including both meat and fish options. The portions are generous, and the prices are surprisingly affordable. Overall, Adega do Convento is known for its authentic food and convenient location in the heart of Mafra.
Amazing Portuguese food. Perfect place for families. Lovely service.

A very well decorated restaurant. Believe that it is a kind of traditional Portuguese style. The food is of coz fine and in a big portion. A well done steak is still very soft and the pork chop is well grilled.
Lam H — Google review
First off I want to express how beautiful the restaurant is. We came here for a family dinner, a group of 10, on a very busy night, just a few days after eating at the sister restaurant a few nights before. My steak in peppercorn came to the table blue rare, and that is not an over statement. I like usually eat my steak cooked mid-rare, and this was inedible and i had to send it back, which I never do. Half our table was served and nearly done eatting by the time the other half got their food, and my wife who ordered fries, got them almost near the end of our meal. It is very beautiful but very expensive and im just not sure its worth the price.
Liberty V — Google review
Fantastic regional and traditional Portuguese food restaurant right in the centre of Mafra. The restaurant is very close to the convent and the interior does remind you of an old, charming, rustic building. The food is very authentic, the menu has plenty of choice, including fresh meat cuts a fresh fish. The portions are enormous.
Micaela A — Google review
The place is very cozy. The food is good. However the prices are a bit high and the portions bring too much food for one. The staff also mixed some of the orders to dietary options.

After an improvised visit to the National Palace of Mafra (next door), wifey and I decided to go for a quick bite in the vicinity. This restaurant is within walking distance to the Palace (250m) and has a beautiful, tall ceiling, ample space and features tissue napkins and good food. I was surprised with the final bill, as we spent less than €30 in two!!! You can be sure that we'll be back there for more soon!

Hidden in the historic Mafra Old Town, João da Vila Velha is a remarkable dining spot that remains relatively unknown among the locals. It's advisable to make a reservation as this place is incredibly popular. They offer their own branded stout (which was superb!) and a wide variety of local wines from the Mafra region. The menu showcases beautifully crafted local dishes and boasts an outstanding staff who provide exceptional service.
We had a wonderful meal here. Family owned Portuguese restaurant with options for every taste. The javali was wonderful and so was the vegetarian dish. Loved how the vegetarian was a variety of flavors, well presented and delicious. Highly recommend! Great place to come after a visit to the Mafra palace.

Food: every dish tastes great- I must highlight the razor clam rice, and as a razor clam lover, it was cooked perfectly and this is the only place that make razor clam dish in our 1 month trip in Portugal. If you like shellfish this is must try! Service- mixed feelings. Although the waitress was nice and efficient, the waiting process for a table of 6 (with young kids) couldn’t have handled better: We were told to wait 20-30 mins, ended up waiting over an hour. Not completely the fault of the restaurant, but coincidentally 1 or 2 customers occupied tables for 6 and won’t leave even they have finished their meals being inconsiderate- just keep talking or looking at their phone. The owner/waitress couldn’t have provide bill and politely inform those customers that others are waiting for the table. This could’ve been our best meal (food quality for sure)in Portugal except the waiting table process must improve

Adel K — Google review
The quality/price ratio is good and probably one of the best restaurants in the region in terms of good, homemade food. The staff is friendly and the portions are well served although some dishes have almost twice as much side dishes than the protein. I believe that the menu has too many options and one third would be more than enough. They compensate the large menu by having a considerable percentage of the dishes having the same sides. In fact, I had so many different sides that my Madeirense skewer had three types of potatoes. The açorda was also tasteless and the cabage needed more vinegar. My point is that this approach does not make any dish special (besides the stews) and could highlight the protein better with specific side dish choices rather than ten sides besides the protein. I have had Galinha Mourisca and Wild Boar Chanfana last time and the dishes were unique and very good. However, if you want grilled meat/fish, the protein loses its highlights and does not pair perfectly with all the sides. The dessert was nice. We had Lemon Pie but it lacked a bit of lemon acidity and had to much merengue on top. I do recommend the place but not to have grilled protein or fish with rice/noodles.

Great traditional restaurant, not easy to get in if you came after 8. Food is very well prepared and plenty, prices are moderate. Very nice staff.

Tucked away in Mafra Old Town is this fantastic eatery which could be the best kept secret among the Mafrense. Book a table to avoid disappointment as this establishment is incredibly popular. They have their own label stout (which was excellent!) A wide selection of local wines from the Mafra region, beautifully made local menu items.... And some of the nicest serving staff we have met! We tried and really enjoyed the Wild Boar chanfana, the grilled wild boar, the Bacalhau a lagereiro, the grilled turkey breast and the picanha. The main meals were good, but the stars of the show were the desserts. 10 starts for the best Bolo de Bolacha in Portugal! The lime mousse is fresh, light, creamy and moreish whilst the almond tart was heavenly. Thank you for a fantastic meal, we hope to become regulars!

From the Miradouro at Largo das Rivas, enjoy a stunning panoramic view over Praia dos Pescadores — a golden beach nestled beneath Albufeira’s old town cliffs. Colorful fishing boats dot the shore, and the sweeping ocean vista makes this a perfect spot for photos, reflection, and sunset watching.

Such a nice beach. Plenty of room even when it’s busy. Could possibly do with one more toilet when it’s busy but that’s made up for by the bar. The bar has very good drinks and tasty sandwiches, ended up spending more time at the beach than planned due to the bar

The day we were here it was sunny, but it was just before the start of the prime summer season, so there were not a lot of people. The water was cold too, although it may warm up towards the middle to end of summer. The beach is a small cove at the bottom of a steep walkway. The sand was nice and I would imagine on a hot summer day with warmer water, this would be a nice place to visit. The town where the beach is located is also nice to walk around.

Near the center and good for families with small children, but cold water. Nice views from the top, many restaurants nearby. Finding parking spot could be tricky.

A nice little farmer's market with local produce and fish and an authentic atmosphere on three storeys. Unfortunately, the third storey was closed when I visited, so I didn't get the full experience or to sample the café. But definitely worth another visit!

Miradouro de São Sebastião: Located near the São Sebastião Chapel, this spot offers views of the northern beaches and the vast Atlantic. The chapel itself adds a historical element to your compositions, and the surrounding area is rich with traditional Portuguese architecture. I travelled on 31st January, 2025 enjoyed a winter spring vibes during afternoon and clicked some Santorini vibes photos from Ericera

Alright, wave chasers and sand dwellers, let’s talk Praia de São Sebastião—a spot that’s got just the right mix of mellow vibes and sneaky little surprises for surfers and beach lovers alike. This place isn’t just a beach; it’s a canvas for the Atlantic’s artistry. The waves? They’re not the towering giants you’d find in Nazaré, but they’ve got personality. Think of them as the chill, laid-back cousin who still knows how to throw a punch when the swell is right. Perfect for a longboard cruise or dialing in those stylish turns. The vibe on the beach is as cool as it gets. Families building sandcastles, a few locals fishing off the rocks, and maybe a salty old-timer who’s seen every tide this place has ever pulled. It’s the kind of spot where everyone smiles like they know they’re in on a secret. 🌊🌴

This superb beach, located at one end of the town of Ericeira, owes its name to the small white chapel perched on the cliff near the parking lot. However, it almost completely disappears at high tide !

Nice beach here for surfing. Very high waves. The historical old town is located nearby and is a great spot for lunch. Come here for a day trip!

Beautiful beach, we managed to get in water for a 'swim' and enjoy some waves.
Tomislav P — Google review
Awesome beach. No lifeguards. Now without sand on high tide. Still no sand, but still awesome, when humans respect the environment. Again don't come here please, awful, too much sand, too much water, too much rocks, the water is freezing, and there are fish, crabs and algae. And waves when it's not flat. The sand came back, which is awesome.

Rocky beach where many surf schools will go for classes. Good at low to high tide. It’s just in front of Quicksilver (with big store and cafe inside) and skate park.

Another magnificent surf spot nestled between majestic cliffs and the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean, where you shouldn't be put off by the name, even though Matadouro means "slaughterhouse" in Portuguese! It's a friendly beach known for its vibrant surf culture, ideal for beginners and experienced surfers alike. You'll find plenty of surf schools, numerous beach breaks and reef breaks, offering both lefts and rights. So, watch your step when you come out of the water... The beach is characterized by its sandy shore and is suitable for surfing at both low and high tide. Its natural beauty is enhanced by the breathtaking sunsets it offers.

Great place to learn surf but on high season can be quite crowded, not recomendable to go just to lay down on the beach as it's full of surf schools

Nice beach for relaxing and surfing. Be aware that getting in and out can be tricky and there are currents. So recommended for advanced beginners / intermediate surfers. Further there is a nice outlook, a bar/restaurant and surf rentals/schools around.

Excellent Surf spot 35-45min (by car) North of Lisbon. The beach can be a bit challenging for non surfers but still worthwhile visit. Beautiful but rugged terrain surrounding the beach. Well equipped dressing rooms & showers are available. All forms of Surfing gears are available for hiring and surf lessons can be booked on the spot. The Beach has a nice Bar & Restaurant with a well balanced menu and not too pricey. A trendy surfer-spot to hang out with fellow Surfers of all ages.

Tapada Nacional de Mafra, located just 5 minutes outside of Mafra, was once the royal hunting grounds and has now been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This large nature reserve and park is home to diverse wildlife such as deer, wild boar, and various bird species. The park offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, biking, archery, guided tours through the park's walled surroundings.
I visited the Tapada Nacional de Mafra and was truly impressed by its vastness and natural beauty. Covering over 800 hectares, this former royal hunting ground is now a serene forest park where deer, wild boars, foxes, and various birds roam freely. The park offers a range of activities, including walking and biking trails, guided electric vehicle tours, and bird of prey demonstrations. One of the highlights was the "On the footsteps of King D. Carlos" tour, which provided historical insights and a visit to the Tapada History Museum. The park is well-maintained, and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. The entrance fee is reasonable, making it an excellent destination for nature lovers and families seeking a peaceful retreat from the city. Overall, it's a perfect place to connect with nature and learn about Portugal's royal heritage
Antonio B — Google review
Beautiful place, loaded with wildlife and peaceful trails. I got to see deer, wild boar and many birds; trees are everywhere, so there's a lot of shade for a quick break to hydrate. I do recommend a guided tour, to learn about the history of the park and its heritage; + extra chances to see the animals. Calm and refreshing atmosphere, perfect for a city escape or a walk in the nature.

We spent an afternoon there. We were able to attend the bee keeper event as well as the falconer. It was magical. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, attentive and the kids learned so much. Everything is well kept, prices are reasonable and we really loved it. 🥰 thank you, Tapada team for really making our day!
C B — Google review
The park itself is absolutely beautiful — peaceful, well-maintained, full of wildlife and nature. It could have been a wonderful experience for our family. Unfortunately, one situation completely ruined our visit. We came with our 3-year-old daughter. At some point during the walk, she fell asleep in my arms — as small children sometimes do. After carrying her for quite a while, my wife and I were exhausted. We decided to step just two meters off the main trail, onto the grass in the sunshine, to let her sleep for a bit on a folded jacket. It was quiet, calm, and harmless. Then an employee drove up in an electric cart and started shouting at us, saying it was forbidden to leave the trail. I tried to explain the situation — that it was a sleeping child, that we weren’t disturbing anyone or damaging anything. But he was absolutely inflexible and told us to pack up and leave immediately. It was deeply disappointing and upsetting. I’ve lived in Portugal for two years and have always admired how kind and understanding people are here. This was the first time I ever encountered such coldness and lack of empathy. Rules are rules, sure — but sometimes humanity should come first. So yes, the park is wonderful. But that moment — that unnecessary harshness toward a family with a small child — completely destroyed the experience. I’m leaving this one-star review not because the park is bad, but to draw attention to how a bit of kindness could make a huge difference.

Mar d'Areia is an incredibly genuine and delightful fish eatery tucked away in a small alley of the historic town. The service provided was exceptional, characterized by its friendly and efficient nature. Customers are given the unique opportunity to personally select their fish within the kitchen, where a knowledgeable waiter explains all the details regarding each option. With all the fish being sourced locally, freshness is guaranteed as it is expertly prepared on an outdoor grill right outside of the establishment.
From the minute our group of four walked in we were greeted by friendly staff. We went into the kitchen to pick which fish we wanted which was then perfectly seasoned with course salt and grilled to perfection. We also had a nice house red wine , salad, delicious olives, the best bread and fresh clams. The olive oil and vinegar on the table was enough seasonings for the potatoes and Bread. We finished our meal with chocolate soufflé. We thought it was fairly priced for as much food and wine we had. The simplicity shines here and lets the fresh ingredients be the stars! 🤩⭐️😋😍

We had an amazing meal here!! The most friendly staff, charming restaurant and gorgeous food. We had 4 sardines, a sea bass with potatoes, and 2 desserts between 2 of us, with house white wine. The fish was stunning, some of the best we’ve ever had. The wine was lovely too. We’ve had better desserts but they were fine. Overall would highly recommend this place. You cannot pay on card but can pay via Revolut QR code which worked great for us. Would definitely go back again.

Went in for lunch, the catch of the day selection wasn’t big (maybe cos its off season) but we had grilled seabass with boiled potatoes, surprisingly they paired perfectly with the fish. Got clams for starters and they were soo good with the bread soaking up the sauce 😋 Staff were nice and spoke english, one of the men explained their catch of the day and made recommendations. The meal was decently priced too, compared with other dinners

Had a delightful lunch at Mar d'Areia on a Saturday! The weather was perfect for sitting outside, and the staff was attentive and friendly. We enjoyed grilled white grouper and Robalo, which were cooked to perfection. The fish was fresh and flavorful, and the sides (boiled potatoes, lemon slice, house-made salad) were delicious as well. We also appreciated the unique experience of being able to pick our own fish from the fridge before it was cooked. Overall, it was a fantastic meal and I would highly recommend Mar d'Areia to anyone looking for a delicious and enjoyable seafood experience in Ericeira.

This is definitely a well oiled machine in terms of dinning experience. There is a two hour time limit, because they have two seatings, so I was skeptical.....but I was wrong! It is an absolutely sublime, sumptuous dining experience!!! They are usually small shared dishes, which come out of the kitchen perfectly timed, and that is all you need. The wait staff could not have been more attentive, and were lovely to put a candle in a dessert for our friend's birthday. It really was exceptional.

This is an amazing restaurant and I would recommend everyone who visits Ericeira to have dinner here. We ordered one of each on the menu as a group of 5 and it was a good portion for everyone. All the dishes were excellent and very creative. Even the steak was cooked perfectly (most restaurants do not get this right). Maybe one thing to improve is that the non alcoholic drink choices were limited.

A family of four had a wonderful dining experience at Cesar's, where the attentive and polite waiter Pedro provided excellent service. The menu offered a range of delicious seafood options, such as marinated Steak and egg in a tasty garlic sauce with fries, battered cuttlefish that surpassed calamari, and generous portions of grilled shrimp with an incredible dipping sauce. I do not recommend. We had a friendly and professional guide but the tree climbing park is very small as most of it is in maintenance. You’ll be done in 20/30min, for 15€ it’s a bit pricey and really disappointing that the staff doesn’t let you know that half of the facility is broken. On top of this every activity has to be paid, 6€ for one Tarzan jump is kind of ridiculous.

We arrived 2 hours before close, but we're told we couldn't do any activities, despite us literally being the only guests there. We were told to come back the next day, when we did archery and tree climbing. The archery was ok but there was only one bow, and 4 arrows. Each arrow was not good quality in one way or another, making it difficult to use. There was also only one target between 6 of us. The tree climbing was good fun but could probably do with a little maintenance for rust etc. The staff however were very friendly and helpful

Health food restaurant
GiG - Green is Good in Ericeira offers a cozy atmosphere and efficient, friendly service. The cafe serves delicious cappuccinos and vegan blueberries coulisse. The menu also features well-balanced, flavorful dishes like tapioca with salmon, sautéed spinach, and poached eggs, as well as a delightful omelette. Their turmeric latte is rich in flavor and served hot. Visitors can enjoy brunch options, including vegan choices that are highly recommended.
This spot should definitely be on your list for breakfast and brunch. My love for this place knows no bounds! It serves the best salmon I’ve ever had, and their chicken simply out of this world. What truly stands out is their brunch for two—a must-try experience that’s worth every minute. The breakfast is absolutely worth your time, and every dish is crafted to perfection. The flavor combinations are so delicious that each bite feels like a journey. Special shoutout to the best manager, whose name I unfortunately can’t remember, but he was so positive and welcoming—it really made our visit even more special. And, don’t forget to try their turmeric latte—it’s another must-order item that you’ll love. All our breakfasts and brunches were spent in this amazing spot, and I highly recommend it for anyone visiting the area.

Found this amazing brunch spot by accident during our stay in Ericeira. All of our food was excellent, beautifully presented and served with a smile. Amazing, healthy start to the day and would highly recommend. The VeGIG Egg dish was the highlight but would recommend anything off the menu, including the fresh juice blends. We went two days pin succession it was that good! Highly recommended

This place is just lovely! Probably had breakfast at least 5 times here and every time the food was so good. If you’re 2, i highly recommend the breakfast for 2 - really big and super good! The açaí smoothie was great and the meia de leche coffee ☺️ the breakfast burrito was also delish! My husband and I were just not the biggest fan of the pancakes.
Chelsea A — Google review
Had the full brunch for 1 which is a great way to sample the menu. The portion is huge so treat it as a full breakfast! Love the unique options they have on the menu and the waiters and all super friendly

GiG is the spot for amazing brunch! We came back multiple times. They have fresh and super tasty food! We especially love the Açai Bowl, Salmon Tatar & Avo Corstini. They also have good Matcha Latte!
Rana H — Google review
Interesting place for breakfast, but the food was average for us. The atmosphere is charming and cozy, making it a nice spot to relax and enjoy a morning coffee, though the dishes didn’t quite meet our expectations
MsAllatt — Google review
Green is Good quickly became our favorite go-to breakfast spot – we ended up visiting every day. The food was consistently outstanding: fresh, healthy, and full of flavor. One of the things we really appreciated was how affordable it all was. Prices were very fair, and adding extra sides was surprisingly cheap – for example, I could add a generous portion of sautéed spinach for just one euro. If you’re looking for a place that offers healthy options, great value, and the vitamin boost you need to start the day right, Green is Good is absolutely worth visiting. We can wholeheartedly recommend it!

Restaurant
Canastra is a delightful seafood establishment that offers breathtaking views of the sea. It is advisable to arrive early to secure an outdoor table and fully appreciate the charming ambiance. The menu is uncomplicated, featuring delectable appetizers and perfectly grilled fresh fish. One highlight worth mentioning is their exceptional house vinho verde, available at a remarkably affordable price of 15 units of currency. The staff members are also incredibly pleasant and accommodating. Payment options are limited to cash or Portuguese credit cards only.
If you are a fish and seafood lover this is the place. We had clams and mussels with good white wine. The appetizers were great as well. Outside sitting by the beach is best

Incredible, friendly service - super helpful in picking out fish for the group. It's clear the folks who run this place are good people! The clams were UNREAL. So good, highly recommend them. Personally, I'm not much of a fish eater, but this is the first place in my life I kept going back to the plate for seconds and thirds. The view of the sunset was incredible as well. Highly recommended!

I picked this restaurant to celebrate my birthday, after reading the reviews. This restaurant did not disappoint. Great service, delicious and fresh seafood. The clams were some of the best we've had, and the fish was amazing. Very reasonable price. We will definitely be back.
Ross A — Google review
Fish was very good, although a bit salty. Assortment of appetizers are served at the beginning (even if you don’t order) and you pay what you eat. Haven’t seen that anywhere else. A bit strange. Nice place for a sunset watching.
Vierka G — Google review
This is a fish restaurant which serves the catch of the day. They communicate very transparent the prices of the products and they show the fish and the weight in front of you. We had a 1kg red fish and it was very tasty! Location is on top of the sea so the view is also very nice! I recommend!

Delicious seafood, amazing appetizers and yummy fish. Family business. Lovely location, especially for having dinner & watch sunset. Be aware - they only accept cash 💸

Food was good but pricey. On two occasions they also brought dishes we did not order so that gave a uncomfortable feel to it. Also they claimed we could only pay in cash even though they have a card machine.

A fantastic place to eat grilled fish. Fish is always fresh, we have lots of choice options since grouper, sea bass sea bream, sardines, mackerel, etc, all coming from the Atlantic Ocean. Service is very friendly. Wine was good. Diner was less. We had mixed grill, not to bad. But the others had fish in too much flavor. No fine tast at all. I think according Portugese tradition for locals okay but for European: we have had much better.

Santa Marta Park is a waterfront recreational area that provides fun activities for the whole family. It features a playground, mini-golf course, tennis courts, and an ice-skating rink. The park also houses a gym and a cafe with soy milk options. Visitors can enjoy great views of the sea while playing mini-golf or relaxing in the park's cute area during sunset time. Nice spot for a family weekend. There's a minigolf spot, cafe, kids park, gym, tennis court. Tried the minigolf and it was ok, maybe a little pricey for its condition, but it was fun and had a great view of the sea. The coffe place was cool too. They had soy milk which is a BIG plus!

Went to do the mini golf. It was amazing. Only €3 per person per hour. Absolute bargain. Couldn't find the place to hire clubs etc to start with - turns out it's next to the tennis courts. Staff were very helpful & had a lot of time to help us with our limited Portuguese. Good views of the sea too.

(Translated by Google) The Milreu Fort is also known as the Fort of São Pedro da Ericeira, the Fort of Mil Regos and the Fort of Ericeira. It is located in the Ericeira area, in the municipality of Mafra, district of Lisbon, in Portugal. This is the last remaining of a small group of forts built during the Restoration of Independence and which served to defend that part of the Portuguese coast. The aim of its construction was to control maritime access to Ericeira from the north and also to prevent any attempt to land in the bay formed by the nearby Ribeira de Ilhas beach. The Milreu Fort has a rectangular plan, designed in the Mannerist style, with a terraced roof. On its frontispiece is the gatehouse with a round arch. It also has a battery with gun ports and two cylindrical sentry boxes with conical roofs. Delicious burritos and fresh salads – hands down the best spot in Ericeira for a quick, tasty bite and an ice cold beer. Super chill vibe, friendly staff, and great portions. Truly a must-try if you’re in town

We ordered a veggie burrito and the tuna sandwich. The burrito was quite dry, just a lot of rice but overall it was good. The tuna sandwich I would recommend! The daiquiri did not come with a straw, even though it’s crushed ice. Still a nice drink, but would’ve liked a straw. The atmosphere is very nice and chill, and the service was ok too.

I came here because the place is advertised as pet-friendly, and I was working quietly on my computer with my service dog. He barked a little, and while all the other clients were smiling and even petting him, the owner came over and told me this was the last time I could come with my dog. He asked me to leave in the middle of my coffee and breakfast, which I had already paid for, and even told me that I was the one not behaving properly. The staff was lovely, but the owner was rude and unpleasant. For a café that claims to be dog-friendly, the experience was the opposite. On top of that, my dog is a service animal and, by law, is allowed to enter any public place. What happened here is discriminatory and actually against the law. I would never recommend giving business to a place with such an unpleasant owner.

My partner and I came hungry after a day of surf and also loved the look of the prawn linguine. We ordered the bruschetta and the burrata crudo as starters. The bruschetta was good, the bread was crunch and soft and slightly warm which paired well with the stracciatella and tomatoes. The burrata crudo was an odd pairing of burrata with pickled artichokes and ham - didn't hate it, but didn't love it. For the main, we both ordered the prawn linguine. It was tasty but quite rich. My main critique would be that the pieces of prawn in the linguine was overcooked, and the prawn on top wasn't the freshest. It had clearly been cooked and kept cold then put on top as garnish. I'm not Italian, but it seemed overly creamy to me to be authentic (she says going to an Italian restaurant in Portugal). The staff were lovely and I thought the restaurant was very cute in ambience which was nice for our date. All in all, I'd say it's worth a visit.

Great food (Melazzane, Gnocchi) to ok food (mixed starter set, some pasta a matrigiana) and generally nice location, friendly owner/host: 4 to 5 stars for this. However, mostly slow and sometimes unfriendly and somewhat incompetent serving staff: minus 1 to 2 stars for this. Minor minus points for seating 3 people onto a 2-person table. Last but not least, and worst thing if you want to enjoy dinner as a non-smoking guest in the outside area: chances are you'll be surrounded by cigarette smoke pretty much the entire time during your meal. This can probably be avoided by sitting inside (though I wouldn't say that's very desirable either on a nice summer night) so no stars deducted for this.

Somebody should teach them how to make tiramisu. Its not that hard. We waited for a ridiculously long time just for take away dessert. The portions we hilariously small for 6€ each and the tiramisu was the worst i have ever had, not even for tiramisu but for dessert in general. I am very dissapointed.

Restaurant
Sul restaurant offers a delightful selection of fresh and delectable seafood. The ambience and service exude exclusivity, with friendly staff who assist in choosing the perfect fish or crab from their display. The seafood soup is particularly impressive, even captivating non-seafood enthusiasts. However, the dessert falls short of expectations, despite its promising concept. Nonetheless, the overall experience at Sul is characterized by pleasant interactions with attentive individuals and outstanding cuisine complemented by a good wine selection.
Delicious fish and great service. Our server was very entertaining and kind. He had the best recommendations of how to order off the fish menu. It was worth it for the fish but the sides could have been better for the price. There wasn’t a ton for the group we were, there were 8 of us, but it would probably be perfect for 2 or 4 people.

Really good restaurant with very tasty seafood. We’ve tried pasta with shrimps, lobster, and sangria - everything was exceptional!
Alexey K — Google review
Lovely location with nice sea view. It is covered. Food is excellent however disappointed w the service as the girl advised us badly on the choice of food. We ordered the rich seafood soup and and seafood rice and it was technically the same dish base just one w pasta & the other w rice. Also quite expensive.
Aishah R — Google review
If you enjoy watching clueless staff fumble through basic tasks, this is your place. An empty restaurant at 1 PM on a sunny Sunday, yet they couldn’t figure out if we could sit. After a ridiculous "finish eating by 2 PM" ultimatum and a delayed realization that outdoor seating existed, we gave up.
Sofia T — Google review
The food was very subpar compared to its price - either it was lacking salt or some other fundamental ingredient, which made the main dish taste very bland. If the price was 50% lower you could give the dish 2 or 3 stars. The location is very nice for sunsets (recommend table outside) and our waiter was good and delivered quickly anything we asked for. Great place to go for drinks, not so much to eat.
Jesse L — Google review
Really nice and fresh seafood. The feeling of the cancridae is at a level of a exclusive Seafood place, here is a restaurant that serves seafood. The service is amazing, they come to the table to show the fresh fish and crabs that you ask and can select the one you want. They are very friendly and helpful. The soup of seafood was amazing, even a German, that doesn't, and didn't want to eat it, love it. The only thing that wasn't well made at that level was the desert. The idea was good but the final result not so much, not that is not good, but i was expecting another level.

Where do I start? Expensive, run down, uncared, expensive food with no care for taste or image. Some dogs barking in a table next to us. So much wasted potential.

Oh wow! What an incredible dining experience at O Caniço restaurant! The fish was exceptionally fresh and cooked to perfection with a delightful crusty salt and an exquisite flavor. Even the octopus salad, which I usually don't care for, was surprisingly enjoyable here. The potatoes were incredibly tasty as well, adding to the overall delectable meal. Everything tasted very fresh and delicious. The service provided by Eric was impeccable - friendly and cool.
We had octopus and sea bass. So good! Nice atmosphere and very friendly service. I can only recommend this place.

Very tasty food and friendly owner. Great selection of fresh seafood, enjoyed the bream and cod. Tasty olives and cheese aswell. Yummy and cheap local red wine. Just careful when ordering fish by the kilo as they can give you a larger portion than you may want.

THE BEST SEAFOOD in PORUGAL, I have to say...I've started enjoying sardine and this is the best in Portugal for sure. My husband and I go to Algarve all the time but quality and prep of seafood Ericeira does way much better.

I came here for dinner. The food was very good and the service speed was quite quick. I had salada de polvo for starters and then Polvo à lagareiro for the main course. The flavour was good however the octopus was quite tough and chewy, which can be tiring to eat for the whole meal. Overall great service and employees, great location and good drinks

Kitchen and waiter suggested the perfect (amount of) fish for our table. We ate here with 7 people and from the service to the seafood, it was nothing short of amazing. The passionate and friendly waiter, the local guests raving about the place.. highly recommend it as an authentic Portugese Seafood restaurant! If coming with a group, be sure to make a reservation though. I am not the only one who loves this place ;)

Park
Nature & Parks
Parque das Merendas is a lush town park featuring winding nature trails, charming picnic spots, and an array of fragrant flora. The cobbled pathways and scenic lookouts provide stunning vistas of the Sintra National Palace and the neighboring village. Visitors can explore Vila Sassetti, Moorish Castle, and Pena Palace via the park's trails or simply revel in serene natural surroundings with blooming flowers, gentle waterfalls, and resting areas along the route.
Such a beautiful garden, in the middle of the mountain. It seems like it’s part of a mystery movie and you can discover something new in every corner. It would be good to have more signs to guide your way, but in the same time all the paths and stairs lead you somewhere.

Parque das Merendas in Sintra, Portugal, is a charming and picturesque recreational area nestled in the lush, green landscape that Sintra is famous for. Known for its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, this park is a popular spot for both locals and tourists looking to enjoy a peaceful day outdoors. The park is surrounded by the stunning natural scenery of Sintra, including dense forests, rolling hills, and the iconic Sintra Mountains. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the fresh air. As the name suggests ("Merendas" means "picnics" in Portuguese), the park is designed for outdoor dining. It features picnic tables, benches, and shaded areas, making it perfect for family gatherings or a casual meal in nature. There are walking trails that allow visitors to take a leisurely stroll through the park and its surroundings. These paths are ideal for enjoying the natural beauty of Sintra. Parque das Merendas is conveniently located near some of Sintra’s most famous landmarks, such as the Moorish Castle (Castelo dos Mouros) and the Pena Palace (Palácio da Pena). This makes it a great spot to take a break while exploring the area. The park is less crowded than some of Sintra’s more famous tourist spots, offering a quiet and serene environment for relaxation. Depending on where you are in the park, you may be able to enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and even glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance.

🌳 Beautiful surroundings with plenty of shade from tall trees – ideal for a peaceful break in nature. 🧺 Clean picnic tables and well-maintained facilities make it great for enjoying a meal outdoors. 🚶‍♂️ Lovely walking paths nearby for a post-lunch stroll and some fresh air. 🚗 Easy parking and convenient access – no stress getting there. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Whether you're with family, friends, or on a cozy date, it's a wonderful place to unwind and connect with nature!
Kong R — Google review
For me this is a perfect way of getting up and down to the palace and fortress. On the way there are many different stops, remains from the walls, and arches. Some dirt-paths are not drawn into the map, but they should almost always lead to somewhere from where you can safely continue the walk.
Andrej M — Google review

Very nice place to go biking, hiking, walk or run. Beautiful place to spend a afternoon with your family or friends. Although this park doesn't have é nights benches or tables and it is very short indeed. You can have some beautiful landscape views from here and it is a very nice place to chill. If you're are into photography you can also get some nice photos here. Although there isn't anything else besides the short walk and the nice views. It can get very busy even in the winter and people tend to leave a lot of trash behind.

What a wonderful experience! Definitely recommend doing a wine tasting here.
Sally B — Google review
We were attended to by two staff, one senior and one junior. The junior staff was very lovely and explained to us all the details about each wine. We didnt have enough time for a tasting so we decided to buy 6 bottles. We wanted to consume 2 bottles in Portugal and bring the 4 back home. When checking out, we asked for 6 bubble bags in case we decide to bring the 2 back home as well. When we said this, we noticed the senior staff had a sour expression and spoke to the junior in portuguese. But she was clearly unhappy that we asked for 6 bubble bags. When we left the shop, we realized that they only gave 4 instead of the 6 that we asked for. The junior staff was very lovely but i rate two stars less because of the senior staff.

(Translated by Google) Located in the serene Jardim da Alameda, near the Escola das Armas, this monument has stood since 1978 as a silent witness to the courage and sacrifice of Portuguese infantrymen throughout the centuries. Designed by sculptor Soares Branco, it depicts three soldiers from different eras: one from the Battle of Aljubarrota, one from the Napoleonic Wars and one from the colonial wars of the 20th century. They stand side by side, each with their own uniform and equipment, and look resolutely towards the west, as if greeting the sunset after a long day of battle and victory. The monument is not only a work of art, but also a lesson in history and a source of inspiration. It reminds us that courage and dedication are timeless values, regardless of the era or circumstances.

Friendly staff and popular place at Sunday lunchtime. The vegetables and beans soup was tasty and the bread, salad and fruit was fresh and yummy. However, the menu is geared towards meat and fish, with few plant based options, and the kitchen was too busy on a Sunday to create anything not on the menu. It would be great to have a plant based main dish with delicious Portuguese ingredients such as lentils, beans or chick peas combined with an assortment of local vegetables and greens.

If you're on the hunt for a delightful dining experience, look no further than Pizzaria Horta. This charming spot has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike, thanks to its mouthwatering pizzas and authentic Italian dishes. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with friendly staff who go above and beyond to ensure you feel welcome.
This is my go to pizzaria! I was here 2 weeks ago, and it continues to have great pizzas and Italian food. The wait staff are great, and I hope it never changes! I was here again yesterday, I know the pizzas are great, but the Carbonarro dish was amazing. The best I've ever had...better than in Italian. My compliments to the Chef. Bravo.
Angie M — Google review
Very friendly staff but the pizza is below average. The garlic bread did not have garlic taste, we could only taste the cheese. Using a bit of paste and some garlic powder is not enough when the inside of the bread is only cheese. I recommend passing some garlic butter right after the buns leave the oven or increase the garlic paste volume inside. Now, the pizzas were a disappointment. We had the rodízio at 19.5€ pax. The crust is a bit too thin for my taste and would benefit from a bit more height. Tomato paste was no where to be seen. The problem was the thick layer of cheese. Not only that, but the cheese only stays great as long as it's fresh out of the oven. When it cools down, it takes a plastic like texture. Another problem with that is that, once it cools down, most of the pizzas taste the same and the volume of cheese makes you be full of pizza in a shorter time. The best (but average overall) pizzas were the fungi (great use of fresh mushrooms) and the prosciutto. The pizza with chourição also tasted weird with a curry like flavor. It must be from the quality of the ingredients. The others lacked complements on top (don't talk to me about the tomato pizza) and I cannot imagine why the margherita did not have some basil leaves. It's really a shame that the cooking process is so streamlined that you are just being filled with cheese. We had sangria and it was really good. The chocolate pizza is nice (and it was my favourite). The thin crust replicates the texture of a crepe but the chocolate sauce was too thin. Thicker sauce would improve the pizza. Overall, I would not recommend this place for the Pizza Rodízio, nor any pizza. There are new places in Ericeira with very good, sourdough pizza and it's just 10 minutes away.

The outward appearance makes you hesitate to go in. Once inside, we were served in a very friendly and courteous manner. The food was good (fine pizza, vegetarian lasagne with their own cheese mix) and overall very good value for money. We would gladly return.

Very well known pizzeria in town, good pizza, excellent service, very kind and dedicated staff. It is possible to do half and half pizza, price is good!

The servers were very friendly. We were new in town and they gave us restaurant options, told us about the culture and even invited us to the bread festival.

Very friendly staff and good thin crust pizza. Great atmosphere with the fire place going on a cold night. This is the place to go in Mafra.

Restaurant
Esplanada Furnas is a fancy restaurant located in Ericeira, a charming Portuguese fishing town known for being one of the world's top surfing reserves. The restaurant offers a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean and specializes in delicious seafood. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a host behind the fish display who assists them in choosing their seafood from the fresh selection available. The catch of the day menu provides some options, but guests can also discuss other choices with the staff.
Just the best grilled, fresh fish, you choose yourself before ordering and sold on the weight. Lobster and langosta available and superb. Restaurant with a view! Reservation mandatory.

An incredible seafood restaurant with the best lobster I’ve ever had in my life! The grilled fish was also absolutely perfect—so fresh and full of flavor. It’s a bit on the expensive side, not an everyday place, but it’s 100% worth it for a special meal. If you love top-quality seafood, this is the place to go!

What a great place to have fresh seafood cooked over coals! As you enter the restaurant you pick your seafood, fish, crabs, squid, lobster, prawns and they cook it on the grill right behind the glass case! If you are lucky enough to get a table right next to the flor to ceiling windows you will have a beautiful view of the ocean. This is my second time at this restaurant and i will be back!

Beautiful view!!! with real fresh sea food. We ordered a lobster with rice, as appetizer we took crab mousse, both excellent taste . We paired with Verde wine. Service is good but it could be improved, customer don’t have to be asking for water and napkins, should be waitress initiatives

Esplanada Furnas pleasantly surprised my wife and I and we were lucky to secure a table for Sunday lunch. From selecting your main course to ordering starters and drinks the staff was super efficient. Despite our limited Portuguese we were able to order everything we wanted without any misunderstanding. Undoubtedly we had the best grilled fish to date in Portugal. We will definitely be back. THE TRAVELING HAT

The place is really beautiful, with an amazing view. You have to choose what you will eat before sitting on the table, at a small “fishmarket” they have, what is nice cause you can look at how fresh everything is, but the whole makes a bit confusing with the prices. They have good oysters and nice house wine. We order a squid but it came out super chewy, and tasteless, and it was served only with 4 small potatoes, around 70 euros, quite expensive in my opinion.
