Hohenschwangau in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Hohenschwangau, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
The world famous Neuschwanstein Castle is a must see when traveling to Hohenschwangau as a tourist. The castle was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a refuge for himself, and after his death was opened to the public. You can hike up the hill (the same way King Ludwig used to get to the castle) or take a horse drawn carriage to see the castle. Hohenschwangau castle is also a short distance from the town, and was the childhood residence of King Ludwig II.
With favorites like Museum of Fuessen, Schloss Bräustüberl Hohenschwangau, and Benediktinerkloster St. Mang, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Neuschwanstein Castle Restaurant GmbH & Co. KG and Schloss Bräustüberl Hohenschwangau so you can get the best taste of Hohenschwangau while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Neuschwanstein Castle, a 19th-century hilltop fortress commissioned by King Ludwig II, is a must-see attraction nestled in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border. It's one of Germany's most visited sites and offers tours of its lavishly furnished rooms. While it's a popular tourist spot, some travelers recommend exploring other day trips from Munich for a more rewarding experience.
🇩🇪 A Must-Visit in Germany: Neuschwanstein Castle If you’re planning a trip to Germany, Neuschwanstein Castle is an absolute must-see. Perched on a hill in Bavaria, it looks like something straight out of a fairytale — and it’s no wonder it inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle! There are two main options to reach the castle from the ticket center: 🚌 By shuttle bus 🐎 By horse-drawn carriage For the return journey, you can use the same options or do what we did — walk back down. It’s about a 15–20 minute walk, and totally worth it for the scenic route and peaceful forest atmosphere. One of the highlights of our visit was Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge). From here, you get a stunning panoramic view of the entire castle — definitely postcard-perfect! We chose not to go inside the castle and instead spent our time enjoying the breathtaking views and the fairytale ambiance from the outside. It was still a truly magical experience. 🛍️ There’s a souvenir shop on site with some nice mementos. ☕ Unfortunately, the café was closed during our visit. 🚗 Parking is available, though a bit pricey if you’re only staying for a short time. Overall: A memorable and highly recommended experience!
Virgiele C — Google review
The castle location is so beautiful. It is a treat for the sight just to hike towards the castle that is surrounded by bavarian alps. The guided tour, on the other hand is rather short (only 30min). The rooms are accessible only by lots of stairs and no photography is allowed. Only 14 castle rooms were furnished. Furthermore during our visit the cafe was also closed. This was a bummer since the ticket is so expensive for 23euros per person. Furthermore even though young kids are allowed inside the castle for free they need their own ticket and it can't be booked online. The ticket we got got our toddler from the information booth did not have a scan code and my daughter could not get inside so i had to run to fund security to let her inside. The security guide solved the issue quickly though. The point is that the ticket handling system must be more organized and improved upon. On the other hand, the cave room, singers room and the balcony were breath taking so the hassle was kind of worth it. The ticket price should be reduced though. I would say overall it was a very pleasant experience.
Rabia R — Google review
A real-life Disney castle — but truly so much more than that! ✨ I still couldn’t get enough of this place. Every corner feels like stepping into a fairytale. The guided tour is a must — make sure to book it early, as tickets sell out fast. No photos are allowed inside, but it’s absolutely worth it. Each room reflects incredible richness, elegance, and the artistic soul of King Ludwig II — his passion for theatre, music, and beauty shines through every detail. It’s about a 20-minute walk uphill from the ticket area, but they also offer bus services (check the timings!) and horse-drawn carriage rides for a more scenic way up. The path is a bit steep, but once you reach the top, the view and the castle itself make every step worth it. King Ludwig II was truly a dreamer — and walking through his creation feels like walking inside his imagination. Go see it — it’s magical, surreal, and simply unforgettable. 🌄💙

The castle is located in a beautiful setting. Tickets may be bought online or in person (reservation recommended for peak season). There’s free shuttle from downtown Füssen to the ticket center. There’s plenty of paid parking. To get up to the castle you may hire a chariot or walk up for 30-40 minutes. The scenery is beautiful and it is worth the walk. During summer the path is shaded by the threes. Inside the castle there’s plenty of stairs to go up. I advise looking up if it is wheelchair accessible.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5-Star Review – Neuschwanstein Castle Parking at Platz 4 is very spacious and costs €12 for 6 hours, conveniently located right next to where you catch the bus up to the castle. The bus fare is €5 per adult round trip, and it’s a smooth ride with beautiful scenery along the way. At the top, the area is clear and open, perfect for walking or biking with stunning views all around. The trails are beautiful, offering several photo spots and breathtaking panoramas of the castle and the valley below. There’s also a small snack and souvenir shop at the top with plenty of space and clean bathrooms, making it an easy and comfortable stop before or after exploring. Overall, Neuschwanstein Castle is a magical experience — well worth the visit and the walk. The scenery alone makes it unforgettable!

When near Fussen and Schwangau Neuschwanstein Castle is a must. A beautiful 40 minute uphill walk will bring you there. You can take a shuttle or horse and buggy but the walk is doable if you like and are used to walking/hiking. We did not pay to go in but got good photos from many vantage points outside.
Leila S — Google review
You won't regret visiting here. It's beautiful on the outside but absolutely gorgeous on the inside. If you have trouble walking, definitely take the horse carriage up and/or down (costs money). The walk down is much easier. They have the cutest store after the tour and don't forget to check out the view outside near the bathrooms before leaving. You will not regret it!!
Casey — Google review
Absolutely breathtaking and immersive. The hike up is beautiful and you can take your time just enjoying the scenery. Plenty of photo opportunities outside of the castle, but no pictures inside until you get to the cafe.

Mountain cable car
Hiking area
The Tegelberg Cable Car is a modern and well-serviced cable car that takes visitors to the top of Tegelberg Mountain, reaching a height of 1,730 meters. The ride offers stunning views of Neuschwanstein Castle and the Ammer Mountains and takes approximately 10 minutes. Each cabin can accommodate up to 44 people, but due to COVID-19 measures, they are not filled to maximum capacity in order to ensure social distancing.
The trip and the entire excursion are absolutely worthwhile. Trains run regularly up and down the mountain, and once at the top, you can either take a scenic loop or hike back down along various routes, all while enjoying views of the castle. On clear days, you can also watch impressive hang gliding and paragliding jumps from above.

Very Nice trip. Did ascend and walk down. Not to much km to walk on the top, but the walk down it self is really nice and special with the nice views on the disney castle itself. It was actually my favored walking trip I ever did. Really recommend this commercial trip above other Mountains.
Siemworks — Google review
A fun cable car up to the top with about 30 others. The process is smooth, from purchasing the ticket to boarding and disembarking. The employees are jovial, making the whole experience a joy. We hiked around the top section of the mountain and ate lunch before heading down on the Bahn again. The views of two castles are great from the Bahn: Hohenschwangau and especially the Neuschwanstein as it’s closer. Go early as it gets very busy!
Sam N — Google review
Fabulous way to spend the day! Taking the cable car up was smooth and easy (even with little kids in tow) There are some restaurants at the top with soup , beer and apple danish. The views are spectacular. And there are tons of trails back into the mountains for hiking. We also went on the toboggan slide (at the base- by the parking lot) My kids LOVED it. And the a lovely playground. Highly recommend visiting.
S. W — Google review
Breathtaking. Caught the bus from neuschwanstein castle. While the castle was rammed with people, we had the cable car to ourselves and also pretty much the whole mountain. We had the luck of a snowy winter wonderland. This was an awesome experience and totally took our breath away. If you're visiting the castle, you have to get the cable car up to the top of the mountain.

Absolute blast for the kids. Must have gone on 20plus times. Nice little food outlet where you can get a beer and some food

Stunning views and well worth the round trip on the cable car. Parking requires euro coins but everything else takes credit cards. The hiking looked wonderful if that’s your thing.

Hohenschwangau Castle, a stunning Gothic-style summer residence of King Ludwig II, is located near the Pollat Gorge. The castle is being rebuilt in the authentic style of old German knights' castles and will feature habitable guest rooms with splendid views of the Sauling and the Tyrolean mountains. Nestled in a breathtaking landscape alongside Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau offers insight into the royal upbringing of King Ludwig II.
The castle is truly beautiful, offering picturesque views from a distance that allow you to capture its full grandeur. I recommend purchasing tickets online to save time. While photography is not permitted inside the castle, I believe the tour could be enhanced with more detailed information and exhibits about its history. In my opinion, the exterior of the castle is even more captivating than the interior tour. Overall, it was a good place to visit.
Hiwi — Google review
Definitely a must see castle. The grounds and the views are amazing. Unfortunately you cannot take photos of the interior. But nonetheless the interior doesn't disappoint either. I recommend that you get your ticket and tour time set up online. It definitely makes things easier. There are a few restaurants around the castle that have great food. Plus souvenir shoppes too.

Just a short 30-minute walk from the world-famous Neuschwanstein lies Schloss Hohenschwangau, and we can genuinely recommend adding it to your visit. While Neuschwanstein often gets most of the attention, Hohenschwangau has a charm and authenticity all of its own. Set against rolling hills, peaceful forests, and a beautiful lake, the castle feels more intimate and lived-in, offering a fascinating contrast to King Ludwig II’s fairytale creation. Tickets can be bought in advance—something we recommend, especially during busier months—and guided tours are offered in several languages. The tour provides wonderful insight into the history of the Bavarian royal family and the important role this castle played in Ludwig’s childhood. Many rooms remain furnished just as they were, which makes the visit feel historically rich and surprisingly personal. Even if you decide not to join a tour, the area around Schloss Hohenschwangau is perfect for a leisurely stroll. The paths are easy to navigate, and the views of the lake and surrounding mountains are incredibly beautiful. It’s a calm and charming place to unwind, especially after the more intense and crowded experience of Neuschwanstein. Overall, we found Schloss Hohenschwangau to be a beautiful and worthwhile addition to the day—less crowded, full of history, and surrounded by stunning scenery. If you’re already in the area, it’s absolutely worth visiting both castles to get the full experience of this remarkable region.

Nice hike up, but not too difficult. The audio guide was really informative and the castle was beautiful. Such a great place to visit!
Markie K — Google review
I visited a lot of Ludwig’s castles and this one isn’t the most spectacular per se but it is a must see specially if you’re interested in his history. This is where he grew up and where his parents lived. The castle has a lot of history that you can learn during your visit. The visit is made with a guide but you have an audio guide in your own language during the tour. It is activated in each room by the guide and lasts a few minutes. Our tour guide was young lady with dark hair. I don’t remember her name but she was one of the best guides I’ve encountered in a museum. She was lovely, smiling, added additional informations during our visit and was gentle. We had a great time visiting the castle thanks to her. You can also visit the gardens for free if you want but you have to book a ticket to see the inside. Also up here you get a nice view over the Neuschwanstein.

Overall, visiting Hohenschwangau Castle is one of the must do things for any tourist in the area. Personally my visit was both meaningful and enjoyable. The scenery was beautiful, the history fascinating and the atmosphere peaceful. It offered a valuable look into the roots of Ludwig II’s life and imagination, making it a visit worth remembering. On a side note, it’s recommended to book in advance, park your car in parking number 4 and keep in mind that only guided tours are offered inside as well as that picture and videos aren’t allowed.
A. K — Google review
Even tough it's not probably as nice as Neuschwanstein I really enjoyed being inside and especially a look through the window at the end of the tour. Around the castle there are food stands where you can enjoy a hot chilly and some sausage with drinks.
Pavle R — Google review
I visited the yellow castle since the smaller white one was sold out. I was blown away by how amazing the artwork is within. It's unfortunate that pictures aren't allowed inside considering how inspiring the story was. I'd suggest that more people book the yellow castle to see and learn about the old rulers.

Marienbrücke

4.6
(6235)
Bridge
Marienbrücke, also known as the Pollat bridge, is a pedestrian bridge that offers breathtaking views of Neuschwanstein Castle. Named after Queen Marie, it spans the Pollat gorge and was originally constructed in 1845 by King Maximillian II. The wooden footbridge was later replaced with an iron structure by King Ludwig II in 1866.
...later, around 7 PM, we found ourselves on that bridge. The crowds had thinned out, and the evening light cast a warm golden glow over the castle’s silhouette. The air was calm, with a gentle breeze rustling through the trees, and the whole place felt serene and almost magical. It was one of the best views of the castle — peaceful, majestic, and unforgettable.
Aliaksei A — Google review
A breathtaking view, you will walk over an old wooden bridge, very high and the floor looks unstable, you have to take care anyway, a little crowded and you have choose the right moment to take a photo with the castle. The view is so amazing that it looks unreal.
Shadi S — Google review
After visiting Schloss Neuschwanstein, we continued our walk to the famous Marienbrücke, a viewpoint that absolutely lives up to its reputation. The bridge is about a 15-minute walk from the castle, and although the path can be a bit steep and uneven in places, the payoff at the end is nothing short of breathtaking. As soon as you step onto the bridge, the view opens up dramatically: Neuschwanstein perched on its rugged cliff, framed by forested hills and soaring Alpine peaks. From this angle, the castle looks even more magical than up close—almost like it’s floating above the landscape. The drop beneath the bridge is impressive and might feel a bit dizzying if you’re afraid of heights, but it’s completely safe and well maintained. Depending on the time of day, it can get quite busy, so we’d recommend patience if you want the perfect photo. People naturally linger because the scenery is so captivating. The sound of the waterfall below, the fresh mountain air, and the sweeping panorama make it a place where you can easily spend more time than planned. It’s one of those rare spots where you truly understand why King Ludwig chose this location for his dream castle. If you’re visiting Neuschwanstein, make sure not to skip Marienbrücke. It’s the viewpoint that gives you the iconic picture—one that captures the full grandeur of the castle and the surrounding landscape. The short walk is entirely worth the effort for one of the most spectacular views in the region.
Cheyenne B — Google review
Mary's bridge.....what can you say but iconic, bavarian, crowded, tight, beautiful, one way on and one way off? Worth the effort it takes to get there. Sort of a let down when you see the Queue after you walk there. Part of the entire experience. Do it!
T C — Google review
The hike up to the Marienbrücke (Queen Mary's Bridge) is an absolute must-do for anyone visiting Neuschwanstein Castle. This cantilevered bridge, suspended dramatically over the Pöllat Gorge, offers the one truly iconic, postcard-perfect view of the castle. The sight is genuinely breathtaking: Neuschwanstein is framed perfectly by the towering forested mountains, looking like an improbable fairytale creation carved into the cliffside. The sheer height of the gorge below adds a visceral thrill to the visual splendor. However, be prepared for company. The day I visited, the bridge was incredibly crowded. It requires patience and cooperation to navigate the narrow structure and secure a spot for a decent photograph, especially when trying to move past groups. Adding to the intensity is the bridge itself. While the main metal structure appears strong and stable, giving confidence in its engineering, the experience is slightly unnerving due to the flooring. The wooden planks connecting the spans make a persistent squeaking noise with every footstep and shift in the crowd's weight. This constant creaking sound, combined with the height, made the experience feel a little uncomfortable and a bit scary. In summary, the view of Neuschwanstein from the Marienbrücke is worth every crowded, squeaky step. It’s a sensory experience where awe battles nervousness, leaving you with a lasting, slightly thrilling memory.
Girish V — Google review
View from Marienbrücke is spectacular. Castle looks beautiful from this angle. I would recommend visiting in sunny day and if possible during fall season. Kindly check opening hours before visiting
Harish G — Google review
Be sure to take the short but steep walk to the bridge after seeing Neuschwanstein Castle. The views from this bridge are unbelievable. 360° views. Waterfalls, river, the castle and the village. There will most likely be a short wait as the bridge only holds so many people. If you walk all the way to the end of the bridge you can continue to hike up the mountain. I didn't but I would have liked to if we had more time.
Debbie M — Google review

Restaurant
Neuschwanstein Castle Restaurant GmbH & Co. KG offers a charming lodging with airy rooms and canopy beds, providing picturesque views of the castle. The restaurant provides a casual country dining experience along with complimentary breakfast for guests. Situated in the Bavarian hills near the Alps, this masterpiece was funded by Ludwig II of Bavaria and took 24 years to build. The architectural marvel stands out with its Medieval Romanesque style and light limestone construction, offering an asymmetrically elevated presence above the town.
Gabor and Kornel were amazing hosts! This restaurant has an amazing location and both Gabor and Kornel were so patient and accommodating! The Allgauer Kasspatzle mit Schmelzzwiebel was an amazing cheese egg noodle dish with onions and the octoberfest special was the white sausage with honey mustard and a soft big pretzel which was fabulous! Then if that wasn’t enough you end the meal with fried donut and definitely get the apple strudel!
Renu G — Google review
The hotel is okay, but a bit pricey for the overall quality offered (no working wifi, shared bathrooms, restaurant closes around 7 pm, simple breakfast). Obviously you pay for the location very close to the castle and the opportunity to drive up the mountain with your own car. For one night it was absolutely worth it, but I am glad we didn't stay longer.
Nicolai S — Google review
The location is ideal. Just walking distance from the castle. It's not a 5 star restaurant so don't go with that expectation. However, it's a decent place to grab a quick lunch. We had potato salad, green salad and a curry sausage. My friend had been told by someone back home to try the curry sausage so we did! For me, once is enough! Staff was quick and efficient. I would say the tables and chairs are very close to each other which made it very tight to get in and out of your table. I purchased one of their Steins to bring home as a souvenir.

Had a delightful meal here after our visit at the castle. We particularly enjoyed the delicious bratwurst with potato salad. We had great service from Gabor and Kornel and enjoyed sitting outside on the lovely patio. definitely stop here!

Very good location and service was fantastic. They were very helpful with food selection and we enjoyed all the recommendations. The weisswurst oktoberfest special was excellent with thr Bretzen on the side. Another favorite was the Apfel Strudel with ice cream. Came last year and will come again
Dawn P — Google review
The location is perfect for visiting the castle, but our experience was let down by the service. The male waiter made us feel like an inconvenience. He seemed impatient, sighing and displaying a dismissive attitude, while offering complimentary schnapps to the table next to us. Additionally, the restaurant and bar close at 5 pm, which leaves guests with no on-site dining or drinks options in the evening unless they walk into town.
Chan M — Google review
This place is a textbook tourist trap. Not even the coffee tastes decent. The attitude of the older waiter is absolutely unbelievable – rude and impertinent beyond words. The only redeeming factor: the younger staff, who at least try to be friendly and make the best of a bad situation. Definitely not worth your time or money.
Oliver R — Google review
I recently visited this restaurant and had an overall pleasant experience. I ordered the goulash which was very good—rich in flavor and nicely prepared. I also tried the ish with potato salad; although the fish was a bit dry and somewhat lacking in taste, the potato salad was fresh and complemented the meal well. One thing I really appreciated was how **quickly the food was served**—it’s perfect if you’re looking for a meal without a long wait. The **staff were extremely friendly and welcoming**, making the atmosphere comfortable and inviting. For my meal, which included a coffee, I paid **36 euros**. I found the prices reasonable considering the quality and the efficient service. Overall, I would recommend this place, especially for the gulasz and the excellent service. I look forward to coming back!

It serves as a perfect starting point for hikes or a relaxing spot after descending from Neuschwanstein Castle. If you’re visiting Neuschwanstein or Hohenschwangau Castles, this is probably where you’ll end up eating—and it’s a solid choice! 🏰🍽️ You can sit inside the beautiful historic building or outside and enjoy the sun. We went for lunch and had bratwurst and pork fillet slices with mushroom sauce—both were delicious. For dessert, we shared Kaiserschmarrn (chopped pancakes) with applesauce and ice cream. Yum! 😋 Portions are on the smaller side, so you might want to order more than one dish if you’re really hungry. Prices are on the expensive side, but that’s expected in a touristy spot like this. The staff was friendly overall, though it took a while to find someone when we were ready to pay. The toilets were clean, and the overall atmosphere was nice and relaxed. Accessibility in the area is generally a bit tricky, including at the restaurant. Wheelchair users can find a place to sit, but getting around isn’t the easiest. Don’t forget to tip—it’s customary here and appreciated by the staff. All in all, a good place to take a break and enjoy a meal during your castle visit! 🍻🥨

Nice atmosphere. Portions are small for what you pay (€26,50 for the Zwiebelrostbraten - onion roast beef with gravy and cheese spaetzle) The meat portion was very small and a bit tough, and it was covered by the spätzle, making it hard to notice at first. Friendly staff.

Editing my review because we tried again and had a much better experience. Sat outside in the biergarten area and had a great view of the mountains and a generally good time. Presentation of the food was beautiful and the beer was very good (a bit more flavorful than I was expecting in a very good way!). Our family is happy we gave them a second chance (couldn't get seated the first time).

Forest Experience Center Ziegelwies offers a range of family-friendly activities, including adventure trails and treetop walks. The exhibition center provides informative displays and public amenities. While some trails may be affected by weather conditions, the bergwaldpfad and treetop walk are highly recommended. Visitors can explore suspension bridges at treetop level and access free entry with the "Konigskarte" pass available from local hotels.
The Forest Experience Center Ziegelwies is a must-visit for nature lovers! The amazing trails and elevated wooden pathways provide stunning views and a unique perspective of the forest. It’s a fantastic spot for families to explore and enjoy the beauty of nature. Highly recommended!

The walk on the overhead bridge is easy and fun with family and kids. At end of the bridge you can get down and go near the river. The staff is very nice.

This was a remarkable playground circuit hike for kids unlike anything we Americans had ever seen! So cleverly designed, and more imaginative, in a love,y forest. , leading to the huge footbridge to Austria. The chute slide was incredible! My grandkids especially enjoyed pulling themselves across the creek on the barge. Recommend so highly! We walked from our hotel in Fuessen.

A great place to visit, especially if you have young children.

Pros: 1. The tree top bridge /walk way is accessible by strollers. The forest trail itself can be accessed by pram/stroller which is just amazing! The forest trail is free to visit. 2.Kids 4-10 years old will definitely enjoy the activities there at the forest trail. 3. There are free toilets. 4. There is free museum for kids where they get to know more about the forest. 5.Lots of play areas. Cons: 1. It is difficult to get mobile reception in the forest so going there is kind of risky with small kids if they get seriously injured and you can't call help. 2.On sunny days lots of people go to the forest area and you would have to stand in long lines for your kids to enjoy a popular activity. 3. The baumkronenweg is rather short but you have to pay 5euros/person which does not seem value for money.

Cute place for kids and nature lovers! Did the tree-too experience and loved going over the border from Germany to Austria up in the trees!

Not only for kids, also for the whole family.. Alway be one of our favorite spot..!

It's neat to walk amongst the treetops and you can see the Alps in the distance. The river Lech is mostly behind the trees. But just down the road is a great free stop to see the man-made waterfall.

Nature & Parks
Lechfall is a picturesque stepped waterfall located in Fussen, Germany, on the chalk blue-green Lech river. It's just a 20-minute walk from Fussen train station through a lovely park. The falls were constructed in the 18th century to prevent flooding in Fussen. The Lech river flows from Austria through Germany and eventually reaches Augsburg before joining the Danube.
The pictures simply don’t do justice to this place! I had been meaning to visit for so long, and I finally made it on December 25th. Since it was a holiday, there were very few people around, giving us plenty of time to explore and take as many photos as we wanted. The experience was absolutely magical. In winter, the scenery is mesmerizing, and I can only imagine how stunning it must look in summer or autumn. I highly recommend visiting this place if you’re planning a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle—it’s an experience you won’t forget! You don't need to buy tickets, as it is a part of the nature itslef. It is easily accessible by everyone and anyone

Lovely waterfall and walk just outside the village. But be warned, the car park is only 300m away from the Austrian border so try not to miss it!

Beautiful place to visit. Water is a beautiful colour. Walked from here to Tirol where there is a cafe and a nature museum. Lovely spot, walkable from Füssen about 3/4 of a mile

Beautiful falls and a great hike. We found parking just off the road. We had no problem with finding parking. The bridge and trail were not crowded. However, it was a cool day with rain on and off. We only took the trail a short distance, however, had the weather been better we would have happily gone farther. Highly recommend seeing the falls!

Lechfall is a great little stop in Füssen, just a short walk from the old town. The turquoise water rushing through the gorge is really impressive, and the viewing platform gives a nice angle of the falls. Doesn’t take long to visit, but it’s definitely worth it if you’re nearby. Easy to find, free to see, and a perfect spot for photos.

Not crowded , Relaxing and must visit when it is sunny.

Here you can take a nice hike along the shore. The nature is breathtaking and matches the old town. It's best to take hiking boots with you and be well prepared for the wind. The historical places make it perfect 💫 Mark it on your maps to visit this nice place.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
Hohes Castle, located in the German town of Füssen at the end of the famous Romantic Avenue, offers stunning rural views and a glimpse into regional 1500s art. The castle's prominent hilltop position provides breathtaking vistas of the surrounding Alpine mountains and the serene Lech River. Visitors can explore its ornate banqueting hall, trompe-l'oeil paintings in the inner courtyard, an art gallery, prison tower, and a small chapel.
This place was a total surprise. Didn't know it existed until I walked up by chance - had time and decided to wonder. The park next to the castle opens in the evening. It was well maintained and a great place for an evening stroll around the castle. It feels very secluded. This is my favorite place on visiting Fussen; This compensates for the disappointment from visiting the two castles - H&N.

gothic medieval fortress served as seat for princes and now is a complex holding a Chapel, a museum of gothic medieval paintings, knight's hall and side chambers. entrance fee can be combined with the Rathaus museum. the interior fasade had some illusion paintings.
David A — Google review
The historic area around Füssen is home to the impressive Hochschloss, also known as the Hohes Schloss, which towers above the charming town center and offers a remarkable glimpse into late Gothic architecture and Bavarian history. The castle complex originally dates back to Roman times, but the current form was built and extensively renovated between the 13th and 15th centuries, later serving as a summer residence for the prince bishops of Augsburg. One of the most striking features is the illusionistic architectural paintings in the inner courtyard, which still enchant visitors today with their artistry and detail. During our visit, we enjoyed a leisurely afternoon exploring not just the castle’s exterior and courtyards but also ventured up to the Hochreservoir, which provided a unique perspective over Füssen and the surrounding landscape. The castle complex houses the State Gallery with regional art from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as the Städtische Gemäldegalerie showcasing 19th-century works. Wandering through the battlements and climbing the towers rewarded us with panoramic views, and the peaceful, historic ambiance made for a memorable experience. It’s a wonderful destination for anyone interested in architecture, history, or simply looking for a beautiful spot to spend a quiet afternoon. The mix of art galleries, historic towers, and stunning views creates an inspiring setting well worth the visit. The Hochschloss and the Hochreservoir together made for a great day—highly recommended for a cultural and scenic outing in Füssen.

Old citadel situated above the city, very well preserved. Nice to visit any time of the day, but in the evening feels magical, especially during winter time.

Very nice castle to visit while in Fussen. It was built in iterations starting with an “illegal” fortification in the 12th C. It houses art installations and it is also interesting to climb to the battlements and up the tower. There are great views of the cit and surrounding area that shout it be missed. Next to this impressive castle is a beautiful park with benches and views of the river far below. 45 minutes is all you need in the castle before you continue your exploration of the city. Have Fun!
Wayne B — Google review
A calm and nice castle on the hill in the town. It is now an art museum. I could walk to the square of the castle but not inside of the building itself. It seems the castle is only open for a limited time in a day, so check the information before you visit the place. The walkway between the castle and the river and the one behind the castle were also great spots to take a rest.

Museums
The Museum of the Bavarian Kings is a must-visit for those interested in the history of the German kings, particularly King Maximilian II and King Ludwig II. Situated in Schwangau, it offers a comprehensive exhibition on the royal Wittelsbach family and their reign. The museum is conveniently located near the famous Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, making it an ideal addition to a visit to these landmarks.
🏰✨ Museum of the Bavarian Kings, Hohenschwangau If you have the time, visit this museum first. It is an educational and inspiring place that opens the path to discovering Ludwig II’s castles and the treasures of Bavaria 🌿. Everything else can come afterwards – the museum provides the context that makes your visit to Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, or the “Little Versailles” even more meaningful. Highlights include: • Insight into Ludwig II, his family, education, and the opportunities he had. • Surprising historical connections, like his relation to Empress Sisi. • A calm and harmonious space where history and art can be absorbed, preparing you for the castles themselves. • Audio guide offering detailed explanations, giving every part of the exhibition deeper significance. 💫 Verdict: This is not just a historical museum – it is a place that educates, inspires, and prepares visitors to explore the beauty and dreams of Ludwig II. If you give it time, it becomes a doorway into understanding the man who built castles as stone diaries of his ideals.

a Museum of 2 floors following the story of King Max 2 and Ludwig 2 with highlights from their life achievements. a hall with golden collectibles is the main room, then a room with story of the bavarian kings, then you finish the round with the last bavarian prince and his impact on Munich and bavaria till the 50's. i took it as part of the combi ticket. visit duration 1.5 Hrs max.
David A — Google review
It is what the name meant. I didn’t like it because the order of the pictures and stories in the audio guide wasn’t ordered properly according to date. You can see many times the next person is older than the person
Ferhat D — Google review
The Museum of the Bavarian Kings (Museum der Bayerischen Könige) offers a well-curated, modern look into the legacy of the Wittelsbach dynasty, one of Europe’s oldest ruling families. Located on the shores of the Alpsee in Hohenschwangau, the museum traces the lineage from medieval dukes to King Ludwig II, with a strong focus on his life, myth, and the construction of Neuschwanstein. Interactive displays, personal artifacts, and multimedia installations bring the royal narrative to life without feeling overwhelming. The museum’s architecture blends historic and contemporary design; a worthwhile visit before or after exploring the nearby castles.
E P — Google review
Beautiful Exterior, Disappointing Interior – Not Worth the €21 Ticket The castle’s exterior is absolutely breathtaking, offering stunning views that are worth billions. Ludwig II truly had a remarkable vision for architecture, creating something out of a fairy tale. However, the guided tour inside was quite underwhelming. The ticket price of €21 felt excessive for what was on display. It seems the owners are aware of this, as they strictly prohibit photography inside. In all honesty, if visitors saw what was inside beforehand, many might reconsider paying for the tour. Compared to Ludwig II’s incredible design sense, his parents’ interior décor choices were far less impressive. If you visit, I highly recommend enjoying the castle from the outside—it’s truly the highlight of the experience! “Bavaria is Germany’s treasure trove.”
Vivian L — Google review
The Museum of the Bavarian Kings is a beautifully presented look into Bavaria’s royal history. Located right by the lake in Hohenschwangau, the setting is stunning and adds to the experience. The exhibits are well organized and informative, offering an engaging story of the Wittelsbach family and their legacy, including King Ludwig II. The displays are modern and interactive, with detailed explanations in both German and English, making it easy to follow even if you’re not fluent in German. The only downside is that the museum is a bit smaller than expected, so you can walk through it fairly quickly. Still, the quality of the exhibits, the breathtaking views of the lake and Neuschwanstein Castle, and the calm atmosphere make it well worth a visit. It’s a great stop before or after exploring the castles, and a solid choice for anyone interested in Bavarian history.
Lionel B — Google review
A museum about the history of the royalty in Bavaria. You can learn a lot more about Ludwig II for example and his works like the Neuschwanstein nearby. But also older history and more recent ones too. The museum is really interesting if you want to educate yourself and see historical artefacts. You also have an audio guide which is helpful for the visit. But you can also find plenty of information in English if you want to read additional informations. The museum isn’t really big but you can easily spend an hour inside. However you’re not allowed to take pictures which was a bit disappointing.
Melanie M — Google review
Very informative. Oddly there are no pictures allowed. Friendly staff. Nice little gift shop. Skip the castle tours and come here instead; all the same info without the hassle.

Had lunch at the restaurant here after our tour of the castle. The food was delicious and came out in record time! If you're worried about having enough time to eat, never fear. If you ever come to Bavaria, you MUST stay at Hotel Muller! First, the location is PERFECT if you are coming to see Neuschwanstein Castle (which you should while you are here…it’s like you are inside the Beauty and the Beast Castle). Parking is included with your stay, and that is key. You also get a welcome drink and breakfast with your stay. The breakfast is very hearty and was quite impressive for a hotel breakfast. The service is top notch! Sabine greeted us and checked us into the hotel and was a wealth of knowledge and history about the town! She is so friendly and we even got to see her upon our departure! It’s so nice to find people who are so passionate about hospitality and the town! Sabine is definitely a keeper! All the staff at the hotel were excellent and super friendly! Grade A team! Our room was very clean and had a beautiful view of the castle! This was the most perfect stop on our honeymoon! It was so magical!

Location is only good thing about the hotel. They didn’t have any parking for us even though it was to come with the hotel because they were full. Upon checkin I waited my turn but was then put to the back of the line for no reason and the lady just said she admitted she messed up because she was afraid to tell another customer she was helping us first. The other customers not even me were shocked with the poor treatment. Room at night was sweltering hot. We had the windows wide open for 4 hours with bugs flying and still was suffocating hot. I had to go downstairs to beg for a fan to be laughed at by the night attendant. I stay at hotels over 100 days a year and never had been treated like this guy treated me when my wife is sweating and was just asking for a fan. I recommend staying any where else and a further drive away would be well worth it. Next morning the hotel decided to start incredibly loud construction at 8am. This hotel almost destroyed our wonderful experiences of the castles which are truly amazing.
Jeff G — Google review
There was a gentleman working in the restaurant who was very short with a line of tourists looking for a table. None of them were rude and were patiently waiting for him to be free - but he gave incredibly poor instructions to boot. He also acted as if constantly rolling his eyes at other patrons looking to pay, again politely notifying him.
Tim D — Google review
Our stay in Schwangau will remain a textbook example of the excesses of mass tourism and the shameless commercialization of a unique landmark. We arrived at 10:30 am, and it was impossible to park anywhere except in the overpriced lots: €12 for parking, with no reasonable alternative since all street parking is strictly monitored and forbidden. Even worse, charging our electric vehicle cost an outrageous extra €46—a clear sign of the lack of consideration for visitors who wish to combine tourism and ecology.[hohenschwangau +2] Then came the hidden fees: €7 per person for a mandatory shuttle just to get closer to the castle—even though you still have to walk up a steep hill, a fact never mentioned during the ticket purchase. The path to the castle is difficult, absolutely unadvertised, and when you finally get inside, you’re faced with more flights of stairs. To add insult to injury, photography is strictly forbidden inside: a rushed, frustrating visit at a price that is in no way justified. The ordeal didn’t end there. In the evening, hoping to eat in the next village, we carefully asked the bus driver about the last return: “9:30 pm,” he said. Reality on the ground: the restaurants were full, the terraces freezing, and by the time we returned, no bus was running. Result: a 65-minute forced march through pitch darkness on unfamiliar, empty roads. Back in Schwangau, all restaurants were already closed, so the evening ended hungry, exhausted, and with the persistent feeling of being trapped in a tourist rip-off. To all of this, add the general sense of coldness—or even contempt—shown by the local infrastructure and staff towards visitors. The entire experience seemed engineered only to maximize tourist expenditure, with no real concern for comfort, hospitality, or genuine enjoyment. Besides the castle—which you cannot photograph or truly appreciate—everything is overpriced, timed, impersonal, and crowded. Every amenity becomes a luxury, the organization is totally inflexible, and the environment, packed with coaches and queues, turns the visit into an obstacle course. In summary: Schwangau has become a sanitized place, ruined by its own reputation and the greed of its managers. It’s the kingdom of hidden costs, crowds, stress, and a total lack of authenticity. Avoid it if you’re looking for anything other than a stressful, expensive, and lifeless stay.

Bayrish Pub is a laid-back Irish pub in Fussen, Germany, offering a relaxed atmosphere and comfort food. Despite its touristy location, it has an authentic feel that attracts locals. The pub features outdoor seating, making it a great spot to enjoy drinks and watch sports on the big screen during events like the World Cup. The menu includes generous portions of dishes like giant currywurst and ribs, as well as a variety of beers and cocktails at reasonable prices.
Went to this pub twice whilst staying in Fussen they only take cash no cards but this wasn't a problem. Friendly and helpful staff speak English and made us (an English couple) feel very welcome. Great beer on tap particularly the weissbier. There is some outdoor seating too.

They haven't come into the 21st century so it's cash only and the food prices are very high, though par for the course in a tourist town. We were hungry so we figured we'd stay and eat but the kitchen was closed, even though we arrived 30 minutes prior to their posted kitchen closing time.

We stopped in here out of desperation while it was pouring rain while everywhere else in Füssen was either fully booked or closed for a holiday. For being an Irish pub in a tourist haven in Germany, it had a very down-to-earth, "authentic" feel- the kind of place where only the locals go for drinks. They didn't mind us hanging out to finally get some dinner and dry out a bit- the food was great, beer was good, and the service was excellent; though it's important to note that they are cash-only and do not accept credit cards.

I live in town and this place is always a favorite. There are delicious burgers and fries (courtesy of Olivenbauer next door), friendly service, and a nice atmosphere. The prices are reasonable and there's a beer garden (one of the best in town), too. I recommend it! Added August 2021: Continued praise! 🙌 I want to add that they continue to deliver friendly and attentive service despite the crushing masses of tourists. (Trust me, in summer, friendly restaurant staff is in short supply in Füssen.)

The room was elegant and cozy, the spa was pure bliss, and the food was exceptional—beautifully prepared with local flavors. It’s a place where luxury meets heart, and we can’t wait to return.

Pros: The hotel is in a great location, close to castles and within walking distance of Füssen. The breakfast was enjoyable with a good variety, the staff was friendly, the room was cozy, and the spa service was excellent. Cons: In my opinion, the room service fee (9€) was a bit high, and the room cleaning could have been better. Once, they left wet rags on the table, and on the first day they forgot to replace towels that were left on the floor. We also had issues with the TV remote, but the staff resolved it upon our request. We missed having a kettle in the room to make tea and warm up on chilly autumn days. Overall, it’s a good hotel, but for such a price, I would like to face fewer disadvantages.

I loved it all. The food, free bike rental, free parking, the cows and scenery, the spa area, the cleanliness and care for the whole property, and the water fountain in the room. Lots of spa options! I got the package with food included and the meals were excellent! I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to go to the Neuschwanstein castle area. Come for the castle, stay for this hotel! Photos are from mid September.

A really lovely hotel, especially if you can secure a room in the original building (wooden chalet.) Very beautiful rooms, modern and elegant. Spa and pool facilities, with views on the castles. Delicious restaurant, including a romantic option, and generous breakfast 🍳. Service is welcoming and friendly.

A beautiful hotel with unrealistic view of the Mountains and castles in the area, spectacular landscapes of nature and green, so quiet and charming. The hotel is extremely clean and the staff were very friendly and caring. The pool was small but warmed and very clean, the sauna was amazing as well, in general it holds a very lovely spa and great ambience. The breakfast was also amazing, with spectacular view and many varieties of options. The bar is lovely at night and the cocktails were great! The hotel had a parking area just in front of the main door, I never had any issue parking there, welcomed welcomed with lovely glass of champagne and spent an amazing time over there!

This is the best hotel I have ever stayed in. (That is saying a lot.) I visited with girlfriends and can't wait to go back with my husband. I loved the huge, beautiful rooms with luxury bedding. The cleanliness was top notch. The breakfast buffet was insanely huge with so many lovely items to choose from. We also ate dinners here which did not disappoint; everything was so delicious and high end. The wait staff were very attentive and took great care of us both at breakfast and dinner. We had magnificent castle views. We were so busy being tourists we had no time to visit the pool, but it looked beautiful! I can not recommend this hotel with enough enthusiasm and excitement!

Liked · Stayed here for two nights with my partner and the view was incredible, just as advertised with Neuschwanstein shining in the mountains. Snow on the second day helped add to the magic, too! From the moment we arrived the hotel staff were brilliant, friendly, attentive and engaging. The breakfast was plentiful and suited our needs and we had dinner in the evening in the restaurant which was also delicious. The spa area was very comfortable and had enough space for guests to enjoy it, with nice extra touches like healthy snacks and all sorts of tea available. I would definitely love to stay again. Especially in the summer months. Disliked · Would have preferred a double mattress, rather than two singles pushed together but it was not too noticeable. More than one jacuzzi would be great and the outdoor pool could have been warmer. The restaurant was maybe a little too high on the price side. Small things that did not detract from the stay.

St. Coloman Church is a stunning baroque church located in the picturesque village of Hohenschwangau, Germany. Built in the 17th century, it stands on the spot where St. Coloman, an Irish monk, rested during his pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The church boasts a mix of Gothic and Bavarian Baroque architecture and features an ornate stucco chapel and painted altar.
St. Coloman Church is a serene and picturesque spot nestled in the Bavarian countryside. The baroque architecture is beautiful, but it’s the panoramic views around the church that truly stand out. Surrounded by rolling fields and the majestic Alps, it’s a peaceful place for a stroll or photos. Stunning views towards the Neuschwanstein castle. A must-see for those exploring the Schwangau area, especially on a clear day!

The most captivating aspect of this church is its picturesque setting. It stands alone in an expansive meadow, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The nearby Tegelberg mountain and the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle add to the dramatic scenery. In autumn, the fields around the church are often blanketed in mist, creating an ethereal and almost mystical ambiance. Notable trails in the area: 1. St. Coloman to Neuschwanstein Castle • Distance: 4 km one way • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate This trail takes you from the church through picturesque meadows and forests to the iconic castle. The trail is well-marked and offers breathtaking views of the castle as you approach. Along the way, you’ll also get to enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding Alps and Hohenschwangau Castle. 2. Schwansee Lake Loop • Distance: 6 km • Difficulty: Easy This loop trail circles around the tranquil Schwansee Lake, located near the church. The trail is mostly flat and passes through serene woodlands and open fields. It’s a great option for a leisurely walk to take in the views of the surrounding mountains. 3. Hohenschwangau to St. Coloman • Distance: 2.5 km one way • Difficulty: Easy This short, easy trail connects the village of Hohenschwangau with St. Coloman Church. It’s a gentle walk that passes through meadows and offers excellent views of Hohenschwangau Castle and the surrounding hills. It’s perfect for families or anyone looking for a relaxed stroll. 4. Schwangau Panoramic Trail • Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles) loop • Difficulty: Moderate This loop trail offers some of the best panoramic views of the Schwangau area, including the castles, lakes, and mountains. Starting near the church, the trail takes you through varied terrain, including fields, forests, and hilltops. The route is well-marked and provides several vantage points for photography and sightseeing.

St. Coloman is absolutely stunning! The church itself is beautiful, and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking, with the Alps providing a perfect backdrop. If you look off into the distance, you can even see the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle from afar – it’s a sight to behold! For those who don't have a car or own a vehicle, the public transport system is really convenient, making it easy to get to the area. Plus, if you’re in need of some refreshments, the nearby Rewe Supermarkt is a great stop. There's also a lovely café inside Rewe serving delicious cakes, coffee, and hot chocolate – perfect for a cozy break while enjoying the view. Highly recommend visiting!

Park
Schwansee Park, located below Hohenschwangau Castle, offers a serene escape from the nearby hustle and bustle. The park features a water lily pond and provides stunning views of both royal castles. It is reminiscent of 19th-century English landscape gardens and serves as a nature reserve. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks around Schwansee, relax on benches scattered throughout the forest, and even take a refreshing swim in the lake during warmer months.

(Translated by Google) My recent visit to the park was a pretty unique experience. Although the view was nice, the provision of snacks and entertainment from the park staff were poor. There weren't many opportunities to take a break from nature and eat something. The employees were also not very open-minded and seemed a little bored. It felt like they were just doing their job instead of loving it. It's a shame to see that some places that once represented so much joy and variety now have such a lack of variety and entertainment. It's important that we remember how precious the moments we spend with the people and places that mean the most to us are. It's a reminder that it's the little things that ultimately put a smile on our faces (Original) Mein neulichster Besuch im Park war eine ziemlich einmalige Erfahrung. It's odd that a well-known website like yours would combine images of Alpsee and Schwansee. Because of this, when users publish something here, they frequently confuse the placement of their posts. On the route from Fussen to the Hohenschwangau Castle, Schwansee is situated below the castle and is a part of Schwansee Park. What you are displaying in your main image is the Alpsee, a different lake that can be seen minutes from the tour ticket counter and close to Hohenschwangau Castle.

Hotel Villa Ludwig

Hotel
Hotel Villa Ludwig is a charming property located near Neuschwanstein Castle, offering cozy suites with castle views and a serene spa. Guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast during their stay. The hotel's small boutique design creates a romantic hideaway beneath the castle, providing an ideal setting for relaxation. The wellness facilities include saunas and a relaxing area with views of the castle. With its magical location and dedicated staff, this hotel offers an unforgettable experience for guests looking to explore the beauty of the surrounding area.
Absolutely can't recommend this hotel enough. We had a romantic suite superior room and it was large and beautiful. Everything is subjective of course, but we have stayed in some fantastic mid/high end hotels in the world so we're fairly good at judging hotels now. Don't worry about parking either. Their underground car park is a wonder. Service was excellent as well with everyone being super friendly- despite our awful german.

This was an amazing and perfect place to stay! Walkable, quiet and the view from our room (almost positive it was 205) was EPIC! The staff was amazing! So friendly and helpful. They have an underground car park which was perfect for our stay during the massive storm! Perfect views of the Neuschwanstein castle from the tub, lying in bed and the terrace. The room was large, clean and a very comfortable bed. Silly but we love that the toilet is in its own room and separate from the vanity and shower. There is a mini bar with a few drink options in the mini fridge and some snacks if you forget to pack your own. The breakfast was lovely with lots of options and excellent coffee. We wish we would have stayed longer than one night but it was absolutely perfect. HIGHLY recommend this for a romantic stay. (I would not recommend for children as it was all couples and a nice quiet environment)

Very luxurious and stylish hotel close to the town of Hohenschwangau, with a stunning view of the Neuschwanstein Castle. The staff were absolutely gracious and welcoming, with a delicious breakfast and a hearty good morning when you come downstairs. They were also extremely helpful in acquiring reservations to the castle tour, and dinner at a restaurant in town. I cannot recommend this hotel enough! Stay here and be happy!

The best hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The staff are incredibly warm and welcoming, always greeting you with a smile — something you truly appreciate after a five-hour journey. The rooms are stunning, with a magical atmosphere and a breathtaking view of the castle. Honestly, the price feels almost too low for what the hotel offers. You can also book tickets for both castles directly through them, and they’ll hand them to you the next morning — super convenient. They offer the possibility to dine at their restaurant as well. We arrived too late for dinner, but they still prepared a tasting platter for two with sausages, cured meats, cheese, cherry tomatoes, and plenty of their delicious homemade bread. We couldn’t even finish it! Breakfast was absolutely outstanding — calling it “complete” would be an understatement. All in all, highly recommended. If I had to point out a flaw, it would be the flies — they’re everywhere. But hey, we still haven’t figured out how to control insect minds, so…

Great location with stunning scenery. The hotel offers convenient indoor parking and is just a short walk from the main attractions—yet remains quiet and peaceful, perfect for unwinding. Rooms are excellent, and the staff is exceptionally friendly and welcoming. If you’re traveling with a dog, this place is especially ideal. A picturesque and historical setting, combined with comfort and hospitality—highly recommended.

Imbiss Königshütte is a family-owned fast food spot in Fussen, Bavaria, Germany. It's known for its friendly service and reasonable prices, making it a popular choice for both locals and tourists. The food is served quickly and tastes good, making it a convenient option for a quick meal or snack while exploring the area. Additionally, it's considered a good spot to grab a beer or have a light meal during visits to nearby attractions like castles.
Seems like a family-owned fast food place. The owner was nice. Food was good, prices are mostly reasonable (sodas are a little pricey) for a tourist area. I appreciate how they take credit cards

For placed at the base of this amazing attraction. Here you can get your 4,20 beer and 4,20 french fries and 4,20 ice creme and use the bathroom before your lovely long hike up the mountain. They have indoor seating and lots of outdoor seating as well. A great spot at the lower area before all the hotels and such going up the road. Plus you can watch people try to figure out the intersection right outside, always an accident waiting to happen! I kid, enjoy~

the food was okay but we got kicked out for sitting too long after we ate, the place was completely empty besides us. we explained that we already had paid and eaten our food and they said it didn't matter

Great spot if you want a quick bite to eat. Came here after driving down from Munich, before going on a castle tour. It wasn’t too busy around noon on a Tuesday. The guy behind the counter was clearly not amused either because I’m American or because he ironically hates tourists. I asked a couple questions which he mumbled answers through. Turns out their iced coffee is actually ice cream at the bottom of cold coffee with whipped cream on top. Otherwise the schnitzel was good, but generic, as you’d expect from a quick eats shop. They do have a bathroom which is nice, one person at a time. The water was freezing from the sink and the air dryer gave off cold air, which was a real great way to wake up on an already cold October day. Overall worth the stop, but just keep your expectations low and try to not ask too many questions.
Elias B — Google review
The very first time to be told in Germany that the payment is only accepted cash! Didn’t ask why? Because the cashier looked very cold without any smile…BTW the tables outside needs to be cleaned, the only good one is the location, it’s near the bus stop so that you can find a place to have a rest!

Restaurant
Ludwigs Stuberl is a German eatery situated in a convenient position within the city, easily accessible by public transport and offering parking for those with their own vehicles. Setting it apart from neighboring establishments is its traditional ambiance and expansive windows affording diners views of the Panama Alps while enjoying their delectable meals. The restaurant features popular German dishes such as schnitzel, curry wurst, burgers, and goulash soup.
Lovely view, just down from the famous castle. Lovely food served quickly, service is helpful and efficient, can't complain at all. Lake
Alpsee is a picturesque lake located at the foot of a castle, offering stunning views and various activities. Visitors can enjoy rowing and pedal boating in the summer, while in winter, the lake transforms into an ice skating rink. The crystal-clear water invites swimmers to take a refreshing dip along its shores. Boats are available for rent, allowing guests to explore the middle of the lake and capture breathtaking photos.
This lake is a perfect complement to exploring the nearby castles. It adds another dimension to your photography, with its reflective waters capturing the surrounding mountains and forests. The lake itself can be photographed from various angles, and in some spots, you can even capture the castles in the background, creating a perfect juxtaposition of natural and man-made beauty. There are several well-maintained trails around the lake that provide easy to moderate hiking opportunities. The Alpsee Loop Trail is a popular option, offering a 5-km circuit around the lake. This trail is relatively easy and accessible, making it suitable for families and casual walkers. Along the way, there are several scenic viewpoints where you can stop and take in the beauty of the lake and the surrounding mountains. You can rent rowboats, pedal boats, or electric boats to explore the lake at your own pace. During the summer months, it is a great spot for swimming. The water is clean and refreshing, and there are several designated swimming areas around the lake.

The lake and the surrounding scenery are quite lovely, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the view from a bench or perhaps have a picnic.

Absolute beauty, a true Alpine pearl. This place is so heavenly serene that you immediately find yourself immersed in nature. The colors are mesmerizing, changing from sky-blue to deep turquoise. It was impossible for such an amateur photographer like me to capture the unfading beauty of Alpsee. So I'm very grateful of people who posted good photos, thanks to which I discovered this treasure. After visiting Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein I was truly delighted to spend around an hour at this peaceful heaven, watching the ducks swimming in the clear water. There was an absolutely cute dog playing fetch with his human, swimming around the ducks, while none of them was scared.

The Benedictine Monastery of St. Mang, located in Fussen, Germany, dates back to the 9th century and now serves as a history museum featuring artifacts such as lutes. The monastery has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages and remained relatively untouched during World War II. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Hohes Schloss, a castle that was once the summer residence of the Prince-Bishops of Augsburg.
Most gorgeous place in Füssen. Must go, the history and architecture it's gorgeous. Don't want to spoil anything but please go right ahead, one thing I was left unsatisfied with was lack of English translations.

Benedictine monastery of St. Mang is a very interesting building. We couldn’t go inside when we where there but nonetheless, we we’re still impressed by the architectural symmetry of the place. It is located in the center on the city, definitely worth a visit if you walking around.

Specialty Museums
The Museum of Fuessen is located in a former Benedictine abbey and features a collection of art, artifacts, lutes, and violins. The museum is situated in the old town of Fussen, which also boasts attractions such as the 'High Castle' and the former Benedictine monastery of St Mang. The town itself has historical significance dating back to Roman times when it was part of an important trade route over the Alps.
It was really worth the visit! The library is stunning! The musical instrument section was also particularly interesting. I really recommend it!
Eleonora B — Google review
The signs are only in German, and they didn’t indicate there was an audio guide, so think a translation or tour app is pretty key for understanding the content. Even without those, the museum has a lot of interesting objects that are well displayed and laid out within this former Benedictine Monastery, such as the Dance of Death in Annakapelle painting, recreated violin making workshop, library’s architecture, seeing the inside of a small organ, the Kapitelsaal room’s paintings, and more.
Becky T — Google review
Museum is 2 floors. u start with geology and roman arcade discovery. a chapel, baroque library, baroque study room, baroque imperial hall, violin history, hand made baroque cribs and much more to discover. very intellectual and fun to explore.
David A — Google review
Interesting little museum that’s connected to the St Mang Abbey (I think?) . Hours are very odd - in the winter, only open Fri-Sun from 1-4pm. You get a 1€ discount if you have a Fussen card. My favorite room was the library. It’s freezing cold in there, so keep your winter jackets with you. My main negative is all the info placards are in German, which I guess I can’t complain about, but it gets tiring to have to translate everything (as a non German speaking tourist) , so you end up just walking through and not learning a whole lot. There are 2 WC in the museum. Lots of mixture of what’s in it - lots about violin making; some old stones; library; religious items. Definitely worth stopping by tho if you have an hour.

A very mixed bag: rather incoherent collection of things. Puzzling, to be honest. A nice building. Not a great museum.

The Parish Church of St. Mang, also known as Basilika St. Mang, is a stunning baroque church that invites visitors to immerse themselves in its beauty and tranquility. The interior is adorned with magnificent paintings and ornaments, including the oldest fresco in Bavaria dating back to 980. The church's construction in the Baroque style between 1701 and 1717 was a result of its predecessor becoming unusable after the Thirty Years' War.
early baroque style church dated to the 18th century with rococo style altars. impressive interior and organ room. theres a crypt at the end of the church with facinating statues.

An absolutely beautiful church next to the Hohes Schloss. The ceiling paintings are amazing and the organ balcony is just gorgeous. For such a small town, this church has the same level of ornate plasterwork and gold details as some of the cathedrals in Munich and larger cities. Madame Plüsch is a beautifully decorated restaurant located in the old town near the shopping street. The dining experience offers traditional dishes like spätzle noodles, smoked sausages, and sauerkraut for sharing. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, with friendly and welcoming staff providing excellent service. Visitors have praised the delicious and flavorful food, such as fried fish and organic turkey schnitzel. While prices are considered high, many find them justified for the quality of the dining experience.
We did not make a booking but they managed to squeeze us in no problems despite the busy restaurant. The service was great, even providing toys for my son to play with while we waited for dinner. The meals were great ans the service was great too. For something as simple as garlic bread, it was great- my husband said it was THE BEST he’d eaten! All meals were great.

Booked as part of a birthday celebration. We both loved this restaurant. Great atmosphere with brilliant service. They really pushed the boat out for my girlfriends celebration. Her face was a picture 🥰 I'm sure that all the food and drink was of German origin. Apparently the Riesling was of top quality. I was driving so I can't comment. We would happily return if the opportunity presented itself.

The best food we’ve had in Germany so far, everything was exquisitely prepared and so fresh. The garnishes were all so unique too and the antiques make the place feel cozy and special. Our waiter was also fantastic and knowledgeable and they took good care of my friend with an allergy.

I was beyond impressed with this restaurant. The quality of the ingredients was outstanding; everything was fresh, well seasoned, and perfectly balanced. It was the best Bavarian food I’ve ever had, and I’m not even usually a fan of the cuisine. This place completely won me over. The ambiance and decor added to the experience, creating an even more enjoyable vibe. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend stopping by.

Cozy restaurant with excellent, fast service and a friendly waiter. Food is great and well dosed. Orders arrive promptly, and staff check in thoughtfully. Warm ambiance encourages conversation. An easy recommendation for well served portions, comfort, and genuine hospitality.
Tiago A — Google review
The food was decent, but considering the price point, I expected more. The service, however, was excellent. Unfortunately, the seating was by far the most uncomfortable I’ve experienced in 33 years. Despite not being particularly tall, I couldn’t fit my knees under the table — it didn’t feel like a proper dining table at all. Additionally, the knife provided was barely functional; it struggled to cut the meat and wouldn’t have even sliced through butter. Also, only one vegetarian dish as option (being Kässespätzle) was very disappointing for my partner
Raphael K — Google review
The food was great, the service was also really good and friendly and accommodating. The price is a little over average. Otherwise if i am ever back, this place would be my #1 choice. A gem.
Hussam C — Google review
AMAZING (all Capitals). The staff are super nice and friendly. Great service combined with AMAZING food. We enjoyed every second and every bite of the food and would totally recommend this cozy and nostalgic restaurant from the 1920s. The starter soup with cheese dumplings was very tasty even though it was a "clear" soup. The main dishes (duck breast in orange sauce and roast beef in gravy) were also made to perfection. The restaurant is a bit on the pricey side but it is worth every penny. It also became very crowded and people were waiting in the queue to be seated. If you wish to eat dinner after 18:30 make sure you make a reservation. The decoration was also really nice inside but we decided to sit outside and enjoy the nice summer weather with a cool breeze and a 1L Bavarian beer.

We wanted to eat at a German place but everything was full, so we ended up here — and we never regretted it! The food was authentic and delicious, but what truly made the night unforgettable was Martin. He kept us laughing all evening, made us feel so welcome, and at the end he didn’t even want to accept a tip. What a guy! This is a waiter I’ll remember for a lifetime.

We ordered some pizza and Carbonara. Both pizzas were excellent. The dough was crunchy and they were generous with the toppings. We also had tomato soup which was really savoury. The carbonara, on the other hand, was dry. The eggs were cooked and it lacked flavour. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay here because of the impeccable service. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating.

Kainz Restaurant is a lovely place with a great view of the castle from its outside area. The food is delicious and served in generous portions, and the service is excellent. The staff are friendly and helpful, making dining here a pleasant experience for both adults and children. This family-run establishment offers typical dishes that are highly recommended by visitors. Despite not having the highest ratings online, Kainz pleasantly surprises guests with its service and food quality.
An overall amazing experience! Staff were fun and entertaining, our hotel brought us there after our Neuschwanstein tour. Food was delicious and came out in a timely manner. If you’re a tourist or resident I definitely recommend coming here!!

Huge suprise! We didn’t expect a lot from a touristic restaurant but actually we well positively surprised. The chicken salads was delicious, fresh product, generous portion and not too oily. Schnitzel was fantastic as well. We don’t recommend the burger nor the pasta. The waiting time was short, lot of tables perfect for bigger groups. When it comes to prizes they range from 13-19€ per main dishes.
Ania O — Google review
Having lunch on the terrace at Kainz feels like eating straight out of a fairy tale, the view of Neuschwanstein Castle rising above the trees is unforgettable. The food leans Bavarian, with Weißwurst, pretzels, Obatzda, and other hearty dishes alongside lighter bites and snacks. It’s the kind of place where onion rings and elderflower soda can sit happily next to traditional plates. Service is quick given the busy crowds, but the real star is pairing regional flavors with one of the most iconic views in Germany. A perfect pause before or after exploring the castles.
E P — Google review
We really enjoyed this place! From the ambience to the food, everything was amazing. The menu isn’t large but you can still choose between traditional options like roasted pork or Wiener schnitzel and classics like burgers or tomato sauce pasta. We had cheese sausages, Wiener schnitzel and a mixed salad and all was delicious! The portions were large. The servers were kind and friendly, we really felt welcome. I highly recommend!

Stopped in for a quick lunch right before our Neuschwanstein Castle tour and overall had a pretty good meal. We were able to sit outside and had great views of the castle. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered arrived quickly. They have indoor seating and out, but I would recommend the outdoor seating because it has great views of the castle and the forrest. For my meal I ordered the sausages in water which was an odd presentation but I enjoyed it. It wasn’t a lot of food but we also didn’t want to fill up because we had to do a ton of walking. I would recommend overall especially if you are looking for a quick and casual cafe.

The breakfast was outstanding. The hospitality was superb. The staff live in the same building and are very nice and helpful. The house was very old and if you like to live in Old German type Houses/Attic apartments, this would be a nice choice. Early checkin was not possible. The lady initially could have been a bit polite to say that early checkin is not possible. But the best part is, they allowed us to keep the luggage before and after the checkout. Check-in and check out times are 14:00 and 11:00 respectively.

Very nice local hotel in classic decorative building, great location, room was spacious, big bed that was comfortable, good curtains, temperature comfortable, shower water was hot, the bathroom was small and the mirror way too small (size of piece of paper). Breakfast is available for extra €7.5 per person, which allows for a lunch sandwich for takeaway. Older landlords very helpful and gave us tips for dinner because we arrived around 830 pm. We even got bus tickets for Neuschwanstein Castle from them for €2.5 round trip. However, car parking is just €10 at the castle. Overall, worth it.
Neha P — Google review
A quaint 700 year old property, very central but also a surprisingly quiet location in our experience. A problem on arrival was encountered as a marathon race was going on & access to Hintere Gasse was unclear as some roads were blocked, we could have been forewarned about this but we weren’t? As it was we wasted 90 very frustrating minutes circling central Fussen repeatedly trying to work out how to get onto Hintere Gasse. Ended up driving up a one way street (Luitpold Strasse) the wrong way & walking to Hinter Gasse for the owner to then tell us we were allowed to drive up Luitpold strasse the wrong way whilst the marathon was ongoing if we were staying in accomodation on Hintere Gasse! Parking is across the road from the front of the guesthouse in designated bays. You might have a fight on your hands for one of these bays if the hotel is busy as we did on one of the three nights we stayed. Our split apartment had a tv, 2 double beds & an extra pull out camp bed, a cooker in room, toaster, fridge, microwave, en-suite bathroom. Property was clean. No black out curtains. Breakfast of toast, Jams biscuits, cereal, tea & coffee was served 7.50-9.30am. Shower was small, just enough room to move around in it but easy to nudge the controls whilst doing so. Shower head grip was loose. No soap tray. No hand towel rail in bathroom. We thought the room was cold on one of the three nights we stayed, only thin duvets & a very thin optional fleece blanket were provided with no heating on in July whilst we experienced overnight low temps of around 11c. Property is run by a friendly owner who explained the local area very well. Pillows are huge & double sized but with an uncomfortable, lumpy filling. Unkempt garden area at the rear could be utilised to create a nice outdoor seating area imho but the owners are elderly so I won’t criticise them too much for that. All things considered, this was ok, great location for Neuschwanstein etc but I was ready to leave after 3 nights here.

It was the best value for money. The hotel really has a generous breakfast and is very well located. The bedrooms were a little dark, they have no mirror and bathroom could be a little improved( I mean the curtains) It's just not awesome because of the accommodations.

Excellent location! Pitoresque building, rooms are very clean, classic style. We were pleasantly impressed by the owner, it is very well documented and very well informed about the area and about the facilities for tourists. He speaks English, so this is a big +. Parking places in front of Maurushaus.

Absolutely perfect stay in Fuessen. Owned by the sweetest man and wife in the world, we arrived late and missed the bus to the castles, and he drove us in his own car. Thank you!!! This is a true bed and breakfast, the room for 4 of us was massive, 3 different rooms, kitchen and TV. Breakfast was delicious in the morning, and Claudia was so nice and gave us a taste of what she was baking when we turned in for the night. Can’t thank you enough for our stay, hope to see you again soon :)

An old nice and clean place, warm welcome, good price. Free: parking, WLAN, welcome drink. Our room has TV, Microwave and refrigerator. Good deal : Book breakfast get a lunch packet as bonus.

Very friendly owner. We were welcomed with a welcome drink and so e cookies. He explained Füssen in detail and really took the time for us. The rooms are nice, big and clean. The breakfast was really good and we were also allowed to make a lunch package. Overall a 5 star experience for a very decent price!

Füssen

Füssen, a charming Bavarian town in Germany near the Austrian border, is home to the Gothic Hohes Schloss castle and St. Mang's abbey museum showcasing the town's violin- and lute-making industry. The nearby Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle add to the area's eclectic charm. Tegelberg mountain offers outdoor activities like skiing, cable car rides, and an alpine slide.

German restaurant
Restaurants im Hirsch offers a delightful dining experience with its highly recommended mushroom soup and Wiener Schnitzel. The outdoor seating provides a great atmosphere, while the historic hotel adds to the charm of the place. Despite a limited menu due to local restrictions, the friendly staff and decent food make it a worthwhile stop in downtown. Although slightly on the expensive side, this crowded restaurant is known for serving good quality dishes.
Great German food! I had a very nice Lamm Haxe with Bratkartoffeln und Grüne Bohnen. Our kids split the Rinderschulter with Rotkraut und Klose and ate every bite! Nice Biergarten (although the cars are just the other side of a hedge) and museum like interior in the hotel.

Food is pretty good and portions are not too big. We ordered the Wiener schnitzel and it was a massive portion like some places serve you. The portion was just right for one person. Can recommend this restaurant.

I had a really great meal here. A lovely soup and a fabulous pork and mushroom main, as well as a good dessert. Dishes were local and very good too. As I was staying in the hotel I almost went into town for dinner but I'm really pleased I didn't!

Very nice restaurant in Bavarian style inside the Hirsch Hotel. The atmosphere is warm and friendly with polite staff. The dished (based on Bavarian cusine) are well prepared and tasty. I had a Hirschrücken and it was very soft and delicious, really well done. The homemade mashed potatoes were also very good, really nice to see a restaurant offering freshly homemade mashed potatoes instead of ready to cook one.

Decent food, friendly staff! The Wiener Schnitzel is recommended. Shirt list menu, but that was due to the restrictions in Germany. Located downtown easy accessible!

The absolute best mushroom soup I’ve ever had!! Should have just ordered 3 of these for all my food. That’s not to say the pork and schnitzel weren’t good. They were. The soup was just too good though! Anyway, the outdoor seats were great. And the hotel is super cool looking. And old and stuff too.

Our waiter was very nice but unfortunately the goose we ordered was very dry (overcooked) and the venison was good but for what we paid I thought we may get a bit more than the ONE piece that was about an inch & a half in diameter and maybe an inch and a half thick. Most of sides had great flavor though.

Very good Bavarian cuisine in a charming traditional atmosphere We had the roasted and smoked venison (picture) which was one of the best ones I ever had The rumpsteak was also very good. Service was quick and friendly. Prices range between 9€ for vegetarian dishes like Käsespätzle up to 20-25 dishes for the aforementioned dishes. All in all a very recommendable restaurant for both finer evenings or beer nights with the lads
