Bright in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Bright, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Bright is a popular base for exploring Victoria’s High Country, set on the Ovens River and surrounded by forested hills and nearby alpine national parks. The town is especially known for its autumn foliage festivals, with vivid tree-lined streets and riverside parks. Cyclists and hikers use Bright as a gateway to rail trails, mountain bike parks and high-altitude road climbs, while in winter it’s a convenient hub for visiting the ski resorts of Mt Hotham and Falls Creek. A small but lively food, wine and craft beer scene adds another reason to linger.
With favorites like Wild Thyme Cafe Bright, Tomahawks, and The Riverdeck Kitchen, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Beechworth Bakery Bright and Bright Chinese Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Bright while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Tomahawks is a standout restaurant in Bright, offering a delightful blend of street food and traditional cuisine. The menu features delectable options such as lamb ribs, known for their tender and juicy texture, and the must-try salt and pepper squid with its fresh and zesty flavor.
What a wonderful find that I highly recommend! All menu items (except the bread) in the Plates are gluten free suitable for Coeliacs - double yay! 😍 The service was exceptional (thanks so much Morgan!), and the food divine (delish flavour explosions from salmon ceviche, fried squid, and char-grilled broccoli-with a side of fries-were all perfection), washed down with some Sunnycliff Brut all made for a fabulous lunch dining experience. 😋 The place was very busy but the quality of the service and food certainly did not suffer. Loved the atmosphere too. 😊 Family friendly (including kids with two legs and four!).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 10/10 Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish! The staff were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and genuinely made us feel looked after all night. You can tell they love what they do — friendly, professional, and efficient service throughout. The food was exceptional. The lamb ribs were melt-in-your-mouth tender, full of flavour and cooked to perfection. The corn — wow! So simple but bursting with taste, and hands down one of the highlights of the night. We also had a glass of Shiraz that paired perfectly with everything — smooth, rich, and one of the best we’ve had in a long time. The vibe was spot on — warm, inviting and buzzing with energy without being too loud. Perfect for a date night or dinner with friends. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a memorable night out. Will definitely be back soon

Had a great lunch at Tomahawks in Bright. We tried the roasted cauliflower, which was packed with flavour served with a rich cashew cream and chickpeas, it was a standout. The chipotle crispy sticky chicken was also a winner: tender, full of flavour, and not greasy at all. Perfect bar-style food. The staff were friendly and helpful, which added to the peppy vibe. The restaurant is just a short walk from the town centre, though it took us a little while to find it. Glad we did, definitely one of the better spots for finger food in Bright.

Absolutely sensational. From the moment we were greeted at the door the staff were so friendly and accommodating. You can tell this place is doing something right as they seemed to be the only busy restaurant in town the night we were there. Each dish was incredible. I don’t think I’ve had better fried chicken anywhere else. I can also highly recommend the “loaded” Cerveza, unreal. Couldn’t fault a single thing here. Outstanding work guys!
M K — Google review
Absolutely amazing. Best food I've ever had at a restaurant! Overheard someone from Melbourne saying it was the most delicious meal they have ever had, and asked how to pay them more than what they were asking. I'll be back for sure - see you again shortly.

Cherry walk check, Canyon walk check, relaxing outdoor lunch at Tomahawks check - these are some of the favourite things this pack likes to do on our annual Bright/Dinner Plain trip! Every year Tomahawk consistently serves up delicious, flavourful, balanced, share plates. Big outdoor tables when available and relaxed, dog friendly staff. We always over order to try as many things as we can and the huskies don’t complain about helping with the lamb and sticky chicken!
A R — Google review
One of the best nights we’ve had in a while - food was delicious, atmosphere was amazing! And our lovely fellow Scottish waiter was excellent. Can’t wait to come back!!! Ps we also ordered the fried chicken and it was so yum we forgot to take a picture haha.
Zaria L — Google review
Honestly, 10/10 for the menu — absolutely outstanding. I was so impressed, especially considering it’s in such a remote spot. Didn’t expect the food to be this good, but every dish was a hit! They also have a great beer selection and the cocktails? Spot on. Well-balanced and super easy to enjoy. The place itself is a little on the small side, and they don’t take bookings, which can be a bit unlucky if it’s busy — but totally worth the visit.

Nestled by the Ovens River in Bright, Victoria, The Riverdeck Kitchen offers a delightful dining experience with stunning views of the park and river. This local eatery serves up a tempting modern Australian menu featuring locally sourced ingredients. It's an ideal spot for families, with a dedicated children's menu and proximity to a fantastic playground. Visitors can expect generous portions at reasonable prices and excellent service from the friendly staff.
We love visiting this place when we are in the area. Food is fresh and fabulous. Staff always kind and helpful. We enjoyed brunch this visit. Eggs bene and scrambled on toast and both were amazing as always.

Luckily we booked a table before we got there, this cafe was super popular, you can easily make a reservation online. They take walk in’s as well but may need to wait. We had the canadian toast, scones and truffled mushroom toast. Canandian toast was great! They did’nt drown the toast with maple syrup which was what I was worried about, it was just the right amount. They give u heaps of bacon pieces! Wish there were more strawberry and blueberries rather than more bacon to balance the sweet and savoury more, rather than more savoury. Interesting texture of savoury and sweet. Scones were super soft and tender that melt in your mouth but also has a crispy texture at the bottom. Service was quick and welcoming. Food and coffee came out really quickly. Definitely recommend if you’re stopping by Bright for a bite.
Ice Y — Google review
Good cafe eats, a tad pricey for the extras and the eggs were overdone and the breakfast was cold but otherwise not too bad. Little bit of imagination and flavour would go a long way. And a few more options in the cabinet would be great. The coffee was good but not amazing would get coffee again
Sam B — Google review
A great start to a cool morning with breakfast here. Wife had the mushroom medley and I couldn’t resist another chance for a Rubin sandwich to compare with all the others I’ve had. Wife said her dish had amazing fresh flavours. Their rendition on a Rubin was a great example of how you can make a sandwich stand out against a classic sandwich done around the world. Service is exceptional in a cheerful atmosphere. Coffee was as good as you can get anywhere here in Australia. Would love to be a local. Thanks to all of the staff

When the staff open and hold the front door for you, as they welcome you in....you know you've found a good spot. Went on on quiet Monday for breakfast, but would get busy on the weekend. Great food and drink, great views and even better hospitality.

We were here over the Easter weekend and we were grateful to sit in for brunch. My husband had the open steak sandwich and he loved it. I unfortunately had the double braised pork belly with salad, and the pork belly was mostly fat. I ate it and left with a stomachache. Will not be returning.

Great breaky here! Staff were lovely also. Loved the reusable colouring sheet for the kids!! Good views from the deck and a playground across the road for afterwards.

It was my birthday and I had a wonderful lunch with my husband. We sat in the deck - what a view. The staff were fabulous - friendly and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious. I had a roasted vegetable salad and my husband had the chicken piadina. Yummy

We have visited Bright Brewery a few times. On this weekender away to Bright, we popped in three times! It is a really great place. Great atmosphere, and great local beers on tap. The staff are super friendly and helpful. We could taste a few of the on-tap beers before settling on one, Then another. Then another! Yes, well recommended. Thank you.

Buzzing with a great vibe for a Saturday night dinner date. Real food. Tasty and satisfying. Was good to have the option of table qr code ordering, and at the bar, as our phone wasn't working. Enjoyed Fainters dubbel and Porter stout 👌😋

Bright Brewery was such a great find! The food was super tasty — the menu is your classic pub and bar-style stuff, but the quality was really solid. What stood out to me was the view: it looks out onto a walking track, which made the whole vibe feel relaxed and refreshing. There’s both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can pick depending on the weather. When we were there, they even had a live performance going on, which added a fun touch. The décor is quirky and cool — I think the lights were made from old beer kegs, which was a nice detail! Highly recommend for a chill afternoon or casual night out.

With Amazing drinks , lots & lots of outdoor & indoor spaces. River flowing next door, park for children, this is the place to be in bright . Be it a Sunday brunch or Friday party .. everything is wonderful. Great staff .. amazing wood fired pizzas & live music .. just excellent ambience . What more you can ask for a chilly snowy Sunday .

Loved it so much we returned! Staff were amazing, friendly and helpful. Pizzas are huge, cauliflower is yummy and the sausages and mash was delicious! Local wines are great along with an excellent range of beers. We will come back... Thanks

Good place for a meal the meals are quite big so could possibly share mains between 2, good selection of drinks ( a bit self explanatory) , overall food but the food was lacking a bit of flavour and uniqueness there is alot of pulled pork and the pork belly was average. If this is fixed it has potential

Stopped in for dinner the night before we headed up to Hotham. The service was excellent, very friendly, quick on food and drinks delivered to our table. I had Butchers Block special. It was a 500g T-Bone and my fiancée had the Pumpkin Pizza. Definitely will be back next time we're passing through.
Thomas S — Google review
Always a great experience. Great beers… core range is great but they also have some great seasonal hazy, dark and oat cream ales. Staff are always friendly and helpful (especially with heaters for Queenslanders) and it’s a lovely view during autumn with the leaves changing colour. The hero board is amazing for rubs and wings… but you will need 3/4 people to finish it unless you’re Homer Simpson. Pizzas are also great!

Absolutely great morning with a group of friends at the ginger baker this morning. The atmosphere and vibe of the place was great and upbeat. To top it off I asked one of the staff Abbey if she could please heat up my coffee in a microwave to have it abit warmer and insisted that the venue would make me a fresh hot dirty almond chai. The service was great and all the food shared was absolutely amazing. All the staff were friendly, kind and super helpful. Highly reccomend visiting the ginger maker when in Bright. I will Definitely be back.

Fabulous Cafe. We visit here every time we visit Bright. Beautiful staff, great coffee and unreal food. Sit out the back and watch the Waterpark or we sat inside another day. Chilli scrabbled eggs are great but so was all the food. Presentation is awesome.

The food was delicious & the new owners are great! The main seating area is now sealed with windows so it’s a lot warmer for winter too. We enjoyed the chilli scramble & the potato rosti.

Amazing food and cozy space! The rosti and eggs benny were so good! Wanted to get the ricotta pancakes but we were so stuffed. Wish I had breakfast again here!

First "indoor" venue where I've been that allow our dogs as well! Breakfast was delicious, we had the Big Brekky (juicy & sweet tomato, crispy sourdough , savoury sausage, creamy poached eggs) and Potato Rosti. Ginger and lemongrass tea is nice, both are well balanced. Would definitely return next time.

We drove for 3 hours and a half to have breakfast here and of course to see Bright.. anyway we arrived lots of people inside and we waited to give us a table since we saw a vacant table but we were catered into a side eating bench. I don’t normally eat in a side bench but when I asked that there’s an empty table anyway, the guy protested that it’s for 6 people dining and we’re only 3 , anyway we proceeded to the bench and ordered the pancakes. The price of the pancakes wasn’t equitable, nothing stands out in it. I felt sorry to myself that I ordered that. The good thing is their toilet was so clean. It’s very small venue and eating on the bench, the advantage was the good view outside. The service was quick. The latte was delicious.
Fifi H — Google review
Lovely food and coffee. Loved the pancakes. We came here twice for breakfast over the weekend. First time the place was busy so the service seemed inhospitable, while the second day it was less hectic so it felt more welcoming. At first we thought the serving was a little small for the price, but after finishing our meal we find that it was a good portion. The view we had where we were seated was amazing too. Overall we would return.

Wow! Was really impressed with this facilities and use of the Ovens river. A very busy picnic spot and swimming hole complete with timber decking and jumping platform (I wouldn’t recommend diving). Clean public toilets. Plenty of shady trees and lawn to pull up a pew. Rotary also have a half pipe waterslide running the kids can pay ($7 for 6 slides). Water was very refreshing (that’s code for freezing! In January!) Busy carpark.

Bustling little place. Great vibes. Coffee was yummy but a bit strong for our liking. We preferred the medium with 1 shot instead of 2. The daily pistachio and orange scroll was yummy but out of the 2 we ordered, one was a bit doughy and not cooked through.

We'd had their brand of coffee elsewhere in Bright and enjoined it, so today we went to the source and what a result, fabulous, best coffee in town and they know how to make a hot coffee (if you ask). Choice of indoor or outdoor seating. There's a few food options, I had a very nice Nutella donut, but its mostly about the coffee. Helpful staff. I believe they do different coffee bean blends each day. Closes at 2 pm when it turns into a gin distillery!

The Big brekky's portion was massive, the coffee was delicious and most importantly, service was amazing. Such a cute little place that has a lovely outdoor area which my dog enjoyed very much.

On a weekend morning, I visited a cafe for breakfast. The cafe had a pleasant atmosphere and served decent lattes.. The food was decent, the service was fast and efficient, and the atmosphere was cozy. I ordered the big brekkie, which was a bit bland for my taste. However, the poached eggs, toast, and avocado were great. The hashbrown was too soft for my taste, and the mushrooms were dominant with herbs, which didnt suit my palate. The kids' pancake was delicious, served with fruits and honey drip.

So glad we found this cafe! After struggling to find anywhere with vegan options around Bright it was a relief to find Wild Thyme. We had a fantastic vegan breakfast here. The whole cafe is vegan & vegetarian, and everything is clearly labelled and can be modified. So many delicious options! The vegan breakfast with scrambled tofu was so good and a huge serving. The porridge was also a huge serving and topped with so much fruit. My husband was very excited to find pancakes on the menu, and they were amazing too. Chinese restaurant
Bright Chinese Restaurant is a welcoming establishment that offers an authentic dining experience. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, with a softly lit interior and traditional Chinese decorations that create a peaceful atmosphere. The staff are friendly and attentive, delivering excellent customer service to ensure a pleasant visit. Although the building may appear aged, it doesn't reflect the quality of their food. From their special fried rice to the short soup and sweet and sour pork, all dishes are delectable.
We really enjoyed our meals - Lemon chicken and Mongolian beef. It came with lots of sauce and was delicious with the special fried rice. The staff were friendly. Yes the exterior and interior may not be the most appealing but don’t judge a book by its cover! A delicious meal at a reasonable price. Hard to find these days! Definitely recommend if you are staying in Bright

Fantastic restaurant! Definitely a must for locals and passer bys, the best food, we ordered and ate all the food and ordered a few more plates even, definitely will be returning!

After a big day, we wanted somewhere quieter to eat with the family. This place provided that, along with a warm and cozy atmosphere. The waiter was very friendly and was happy to help with anything. The food was delicious and priced very well. Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner! Try the satay prawns 👌🏼

Service was great. Food was tasty and not expensive. We had a few different dishes and it was all good. Nothing fancy, but worth it. Chinese tea for one was a large pot of tea served in a proper China cup - delish and super cute. Decor and setting are dated, but it is a cute family establishment. Would eat here again.

I don’t like to right negative reviews but it unavoidable for this restaurant. The food was simple the most ordinary and mostly inedible. I asked what vegan and vegetarian options they had. I ordered a vegetable fried rice that was so bland and flavorless, even soy sauce couldn’t resserect it. I asked about vegan friendly sauces to go with some mixed vegetables and was told the curry and satay sauces were ‘almost probably ok’ OMG!!! In the end I was offered black bean sauce. It was mushy, smelt terrible and tasted sickly and off. Again another item that was inedible. There was no entree I could have. I asked if tofu could be added…. ‘No we don’t have tofu because it goes off’ SERIOUSLY 😳 My husband enjoyed the corn soup. The dim sims are premade and shop bought (not home made) and his special fried rice was awful and he tossed it after 2 mouthfuls. What a waste of money! We obviously wouldn’t recommend this restaurant. Even though we had takeaway, the entrance, foyer, curtains, walls etc are dirty and light switches are filthy and light shades covered in cobwebs. Bright has much better options than this place! The menus on their google listing is 3 years old so keep that in mind too.

Food came quickly and was quite nice Had sizzling steak and fried rice. They were a little busy with take away so service wasn't brilliant but it was ok Would return. Thank you

Well I don’t write generally negative reviews too quick. It was Saturday night and we made our booking for 7 people with one high chair but when we visited there, we didn’t have the chair for small kid. Food prices were quite expensive that make sense because of most tourists visit but the quantity of food was very less. I am sorry if this review is hurting the staff and the owner but I hope this could be one way where they start improving their service. Seriously we ordered for large plate and what we got was between small to medium. Also the taste of the food wasn’t good enough.

Wow! Step back in time for a delicious Chinese meal you haven’t had since 100% hits volume 1 was pumping on your Walkman. I’m talking honey chicken, sweet and sour pork, crystal prawn, prawn crackers and more with pristinely preserved decor to match. Classics done right Also, in response to past reviewers, the powerpoints have been cleaned

Italian restaurant
Sole e Luna is a charming Italian restaurant that captures the essence of modern dining with its inviting atmosphere and attentive service. Guests are treated to an array of delectable dishes, including homemade pasta that showcases the chef's skill, particularly the wild mushroom tagliatelle served in a parmesan basket drizzled with truffle oil—an absolute highlight! The friendly staff, led by owner Frank, ensure everyone feels welcome, even accommodating furry friends.
Sole e Luna, what a wonderful dinner. My partner and I were welcomed with open arms to dine with a fur baby Kyuss by owner Frank who was our front of house service while Will our chef served us with an amazing spread of a selection of three amazing pastas after our arancini entree. We had more than enough food and the quality of both food and service was spectacular. We could recommend this restaurant to anyone holidaying in Bright. Thank you again!! Your hospitality and food were worth more than the five stars!!! Oh and if you’re staying at the caravan park you can leave the car at home. Bonus!

I was so pleased to visit this restaurant again! The owner has taken some time to re-design the menu into a thoughtful selection of pasta dishes that are made with true Italian authenticity. My husband and I were so delighted with our meals - beautifully presented, tasteful and full of soul. Bellisimo! The atmosphere was wonderful and the staff were super friendly and attentive. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.

A nice Italian restaurant with good selection of dishes. Food is surprisingly good and well presented. Frank was very accommodating as we walked in last minute during peak period and they’re fully booked but he still found a window to serve us, much appreciated. The service is great. The only area that needs some improvement is to have a better selection of wine. We’ll definitely go back when we visit Bright next time. ——————————- We revisited this place two years later and it’s still great. Frank is as welcoming as ever and the staff are really friendly.

Food was ok, overpriced but expected in Bright holiday spot. Rushed consistently throughout the evening, like they had others to sit. Bland service, for sale out the front reflected the service provided! Wine list outdated, provided wine that wasn’t requested, just say what you have and what you can offer!
Leigh B — Google review
The food was exquisite, when we couldnt decide out of 3 dishes, the owner suggested a share plate so we could try all 3 dishes. It was a great idea and we were so grateful. The owner Frank was very friendly and accomodating. The food was so amazing we went back again the next night to try more dishes.

Food tastes great, looks great and I can't knock them back for any of it. Depending on the staff member you got, they are friendly and super nice! However, what i can knock them back for is their pricing structure. It's strange and definately doesn't suit anyone just looking to eat one thing. Buying just one item (no matter what it is) will set you back $38. Buying 2 items (Either an entree with a main, or a main with a dessert etc) will set you back $45. Buying all 3 items (entree, main, and dessert) will set you back $55. So it becomes a situation where you 'might as well' get the 3 course meal. For my partner and I, 3 course meals, including 2 drinks, came to around $115 for the night. I had the bruschetta, then the steak, then the tiramisu. Also, i don't understand the background story of the owner on the menu. That alone takes up more than half of one of the two pages. If i wanted to know, i'd either ask a staff member or research it. Seems a bit like one of those restaurants where Gordan Ramsay would come in with his film crew haha.. Having tables next to the door to the outside tables in definately a bad idea too. You may get some inconsiderate customers that come in and out and shut the door behind them harder than they might intend. Probably won't be back. Seeing as Bright is a holiday destination, places are often booked out, and Sole e Luna just so happened to have space available. Overall, I'm not disappointed, the food was enjoyable, tasty and looked great. One of the staff members that served us was brilliant and very polite. I didn't get his name but he was a huge plus! Thanks guys!

Nice place for a meal. Tasty and high quality Italian food. Expensive and the food is bundled together for charging purposes. Serves are relatively small but adequate for most people. The ambience is nice inside but degrades considerably outside. Service is extremely slow when busy. They seem to give priority to take away orders. Generally not open on public holidays and bookings are recommended.

Dr Mauve Bar And Lounge is a trendy spot known for its innovative Asian fusion cuisine and adventurous cocktail menu. The atmosphere is laid-back, making it perfect for enjoying shareable bites during afternoon tea or dinner. While the wait time can be reasonable, some guests have experienced delays in service due to understaffing on busy nights. Despite this, the food is highly praised for its unique and flavorful dishes, with the duck red curry being a standout favorite.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My experience at Dr Mauve in Bright was nothing short of extraordinary! After a week of snowboarding, this Asian fusion restaurant was the perfect finale with its out-of-this-world dishes. The special octopus balls, vegetable spring rolls, Chairman Mai red braised pork, and fried rice were a heavenly combination that left me craving more. The fried chicken with its coconut-infused batter was a standout, perfectly complemented by a glass of rose and a delightful special cocktail. The service provided by Jayvee was truly top-notch, earning a well-deserved 5-star rating. Her connection with us being half Filipino, like our daughters, added a personal touch to our dining experience. Dr Mauve is up there among the best I've had in Melbourne in my book. Kudos to the chef and staff for delivering a second food orgasm in a decade! Highly recommended for anyone seeking a culinary adventure in Bright.

Easy to book online, warm welcome on arrival. Good selection of foods with quick service and excellent presentation. Standouts were the Korma Tofu and the Sticky Cauliflower. Definitely worth a visit for dinner, and I will certainly be a return customer.

Visited for the first time. Fried chicken was great, braised pork was just fine but expensive for its taste, fried rice was very oily felt like they had literally dipped rice into oil. However portion was good; Ambience and customer service was satisfactory.

Great taste, great service. We had the Feed me option, and we were not disappointed. Plenty of options served, and the size of each dish served was generous. Service was attentive. It's best to make a reservation for dinner as it gets very busy.

Great cocktails and food sharing choices. The staff are also very friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend the sour and the sling. The baos are nice and jucy, and I loved the dumplings, and spring rolls were yummy, fresh and quite generous😊 will be back next time as it was a wonderful experience! We really liked how large the venue was, we didn't feel crammed and got a nice spot by the fire for the two of us.

We had a lovely experience. One of the best place in Bright to have dinner on our way to Metung. We only had a couple of entrees from Fried Chicken, Prawn Dumplings & Tempura Nori Rolls it was a good decent amount of food for two. The Margarita and Yuzu Mojito is great too. We definitely stop again for a quick dinner.

Booked well in advance to secure a spot - fab cocktails - great food - great atmosphere - table service was and is, fast and friendly. I sent a message via open table - regarding diet restrictions - this was not addressed until 4hrs before we arrived - a little late in the day to be able to find another venue during 'cv19 normal' times. All in all we had a great time - I did manage to find things on the menu which were delicious and fitted into my requirements.

Outstanding bar in Bright! Everthing I ordered surprised me. The taste of their fusion dishes was beyond my expectation. Definitely a must to try and to return.
