For 55 years Pompey Park has been an institution and landmark in Delray Beach. The 17.5 acre park was named in honor of C. Spencer Pompey (1915-2001). Mr. Pompey was a teacher, principal, coach, civil rights activist, and author of Like a Mighty Banyan and More Rivers to Cross published posthumously. He taught, coached, and became principal of Carver High School in Delray Beach.
Today the park is looking better than ever after Delray Beach began a three-phase, 23 million dollar renovation and upgrade to the park in 2023. Improvements included two new pools, a new baseball field, playground, basketball courts, more restrooms, a park shelter, and parking. Pompey Park also a pickle ball courts, tennis courts, and community recreation center with a gymnasium, stage, meeting room, and kitchen. I was impressed with how new and clean the park looks and all of it's recreational resources.
Pompey Park is the heart of this community. Coco Gauff, world famous professional tennis player and Delray Beach native has been known to stop by and hit tennis balls with local kids. The community center provides services to the neighborhood like tax help for low income families. Recreational programs include Youth Football and Cheerleading, Tee Ball/Youth Baseball, Adult Athletic Leagues, Delray Divas Step Team, Diamonds and Pearls Dance Team, Karate/Martial Arts, Youth Track and Field, Youth Basketball, Youth Flag Football, Pickleball, Cheer Camp, Football Camp, Senior Club, and many more. Pompey Park offers a rich blend of recreational, educational, and cultural amenities for the community.
