Skagway

Skagway is a compact city in southeast Alaska, set along the popular cruise route the Inside Passage. It's home to gold-rush-era buildings, now preserved as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad runs vintage locomotives past the famously steep Chilkoot trail and offers sweeping mountain views during its climb toward Canada.

Agreed with all other reviews. Very cool, informative historic train highlighting the gold rush and the amazing Klondike trail. The views were unreal and the train was comfortable. Loved being able to stand between cars on the outside and get some amazing pix and videos. Recommended!
We were on am Oceania cruise to this location. 6 of our group went on the train. Was a great experience and took about 3 hours. Great evening views. My brother in law and I stayed on the platform from the station until we did the loop at the top. No one else in our car was going to the front or back platform. The view is completely different on the platform versus in the cart. Highly recommend going on the platform for at least a few minutes. Highly recommend going on this scenic train tour.
Visited in June 2025. This is one of the excursions I chose from the cruise. There was an adult only car available, so I chose that one. Before the train ride, I was not aware you could hang out outside the train car in the front or the back of your car, so this was really cool. I did not sit in my seat for most of the ride. There were water bottles available if you get thirsty. The views of nature are really great, and I recommend doing this train ride.
A truly beautiful journey. I particularly enjoyed the live commentary, which gave helpful warnings when the main photo opportunities were coming up. It was also great that the train picked up near the cruise port. A must visit attraction.
This scenic route has beautiful views. I loved this experience. It is the opposite side of the valley from the road...and we decided to also take the bus to see it from a different viewpoint. The air was chilly so the we went out in the viewing deck from short bursts. The train announcer and the attendants were very friendly. We booked this while on the cruise so we didn't know if it was hyped up or not but we really enjoyed it. The White Pass route would have taken dedicated and a drive for gold. Those men were not quitters. I am not saying that gold was worth striving for but it was admirable what they did. We were on a comfortable train pulling up the mountain. They were on the ground. It was neat to see it all.
I went on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway with my family of four and we had a great time. The views were absolutely stunning the entire way with mountains waterfalls and deep valleys that looked like something out of a movie. Even though almost every seat was taken there was still plenty of space to move around and enjoy the ride. The vintage train cars were really charming and they even provided water which was a nice touch. The staff was friendly and the narration gave a lot of interesting history about the gold rush and the area. It was definitely a memorable part of our trip to Alaska.
Wonderful experience and casual trip to the summit. Easy access from the port and the staff was amazing and full of information. The views are spectacular and are breathtaking! Be sure to step outside of the train and get some amazing pictures. It lasts about 3 hours.
We hit the jackpot with sunny skies for the trip. The historic train was fun, and the authentic wood burning stove in the cabin took the chill off. Incredible views, and a great commentary by the guides. I highly recommend going.

This is a place you have to experience. I loved the atmosphere. We were seated upstairs and had a nice view of the bar. We ordered their famous Duck Fart shots which were tasty. There was an old grumpy guy on a keyboard singing raunchy songs and was very entertaining.
To begin with, the entire staff was very accommodating and friendly. It was a last second decision on my part but they were able to get me on the 12:30. I took the 2 hour tour with Madame Tilly. Her energy was infectious, her delivery with the jokes was fantastic, and her knowledge of the history was top-tier! It's clear she has a passion for the job and everything that it entails. I stayed for a quick bite. The quesadilla was so good! The bar staff was great and everyone was smiling. This experience is a must!
Anybody in the area definitely needs to stop by. The food was honestly absolutely amazing. Not to mention the cocktails that they make in the area are hilarious and delicious. Don't forget to come back to see the saloon tour that they offer, which is also a great piece of history. In the area of how the town thrived and honestly would not have made it without it. The staff here are super amazing and the character for the tours that they deliver are great
One of the funniest tours I have ever made. This was indeed a brothel back in the days of the Klondike Gold rush. So the tour is about the daily life of the women who entertained the men at that time and you will see part of their living ways, including their rooms (with original wall papers), clothes, objects. The tour leaders' narrative is super funny and educational at the same time. It will last around 20 minutes and costs 20 dollars (including a souvenir). The visit takes place at the upper floor. Downstairs it's the bar/restaurant.
The saloon is a wonderful nostalgic place, full of gold rush vibes and the rough and raw of Alaska when it was young. The decor is very time period and highlights the brothel upstairs. Walk through the saloon to the back and sign up for a tour, it's fun, informative and the best part of the saloon. Although many say the service was friendly, we found the opposite to be true at the bar. The bartenders were anything but friendly, I'd say maybe a bit condescending and troubled is a better description. Checked it off the historical bucket list, loved the tour, won't need to go back!
✨iconic✨ First, I started with a tour with my cruise ship. Madam Annie Thyme met us at the port and gave a good history tour on the way to town. We had GREAT jokes and stories. I loved this tour of Skagway and hearing the tales of the people of the gold rush. Second, I thought it was super important for them to cover the stories the way she did. Highlighting the women who built the town with their escapades, sin taxes and looking out for each other. It’s not always the easiest to talk about. We ended our tour with a walk through of the Red Onion Saloon. Lastly, it was such a good experience - we went back!! The next week when we were back in town we had lunch there. Five of us split two pizzas- The Shady Lady and The Spicy Spangler. We coupled it with some local brews and reindeer farts. So good! 10/10
We were here on vacation and learned of this famous spot so we wanted to try it out. It was a old brothel so the teeming and history is awesome in this place as they have it set up like it was originally. We sat down to eat after about a hour wait because the inside is so small and there were so many ships that came into port. Unfortunately we weren't able to have any wraps or sandwiches because we were told that their freezers broke so we stuck to pizzas and a quesadilla. I got the pulled pork quesadilla and I couldn't believe how great it was. Big portion and definitely top of the lists of ones I've had. We were with friends so we got 3 pies and they were honestly some of the best pizza also, which I couldn't believe from a old saloon. The pies were big and loaded with ingredients. They cooked them perfectly. We got some of their specialty drinks that were very good also. I definitely recommend this place if your in town for the day for either drinks or food.
The name is so damn catchy, you want to go there. When you walk through the town and see the building, you really want to go in! ATMOSPHERE: Located on a corner that's real close to the cruise ship pier, it's super busy with us tourist folk. The place used to be a brothel, and there's a tour or museum upstairs but was closed when we went. The bar is fairly big, and the rest of the saloon is filled with regular tables. A crown moulding of bed pans line the walls. You feel the oldness of the building with its dim lighting, dark old floors, and the staff dressed in themed costumes. The bartenders have low busty shirts on like an old school Hooters. BEVERAGE: Alaskan White is the bomb! If you buy a pitcher they give you a comp beer glass with the logo. FOOD: We didn't eat anything but the menu offers mainstays like nachos, salsa & chips, hummus, 10 different pizzas, soups, salads, and sandwiches. SERVICE: The wait for a table would've been long since there were 4 ships in the harbor. Luckily we snagged some seats at the bar. Everyone was very friendly. OVERALL: Good fun place to go before you jump back on your ship.

My wife and I visited in October 2019 as part of the last ship of the season. We had a great time, picked up several gifts for friends and relatives and we each got a great globe keepsakes. I bought some display lights from Amazon and keep these in the living room. Aside form a great in-depth look at glass making, everyone there was supper fun and happy. The snacks were okay, but being end of the season I’m sure we didn’t have the normal experience. Due to weather we also didn’t get to explore, just the making and snacks. But still worth every penny.
We booked a glass blowing experience on the website in May, only to arrive 9/15/21 to find out they have been closed all season. Had to walk the 2 miles from the ship as the shuttle driver told us they had were closed and no buses. Since they had our $284 and had confirmed our booking we thought maybe someone would be there. No luck, but the lawn guy let us look at the gardens. Hoping Max will refund my money promptly.
When they're open, and when they're in the zone, this is easily one of the best restaurants in town. Great staff, epic setting, just outside town across the bridge... yes. Recommend.
I visited here a couple of times as a seasonal resident. The events they host are well put together and the grounds are beautiful. Staff has always been super friendly to other workers in town and are always helpful.

Sad to see it disappearing
This is sad to look at. Was there in 2017, and when I see pictures from just a couple months ago, I'm watching it quickly die. I'm sure it's from our treatment of the environment, but sure that it is also a natural transition that will not restore in anyone's lifetime. So, please experience it asap before it's only a footnote of history.

The team that is working here is exceptional and super friendly. The show was educational, entertaining, funny, and fantastic. The care they took to make sure that all of us found gold flakes was excellent customer service. Pretty waterfall, fun photo ops, gift store was just ok.OK. We didn't have the salmon bake, just blueberry cake and hot chocolate which were yummy.
Was a stop in our tour, was something unique, Representing the local community and presenting a recreation of the town of the 1860 tradition and culture. We had a lunch at the end of the presentation. Rice, baked beans, coleslaw and potatoes, the best part, salmon on the grill. Love it.
Loved this place. I had cake and warm apple juice. They provided a traditional entertainment which was well performed and full of humour. The staff were on bear watch and very vigilant...... and then a group of local kids came jogging through the clearing..... fearless or mad?
It’s another stop offered by the cruise tours. The afternoon reminded me of being in The Boy Scouts and camping trips. Had a cookout, eating outdoors in the rain, the smell of an outdoor fireplace, hearing stories and listening to live music is what you’ll get. There’s a gift shop heated by a wood burning furnace. It didn’t really provide much warmth and it smoked up the store, but demonstrated what life was like during the times of the Klondike Gold Rush.
Super fun show - it was a "typical" drizzly day in Skagway but the team brought all of the energy and excitement. The food was delicious.
This was a fun experience, but sadly the salmon was WAY overcooked, very dry! We have salmon in our home area a lot and wanted to see how good Alaskan salmon compares. Well, this salmon at least was not even close. Other parts of the meal were good, potatoes, slaw, baked beans, cornbread. It was also cool to learn the story of Liarsville. Assuming our experience with the salmon itself was unusual, this was a good time otherwise.
On one side of the street is the Liarsville Cookhouse where they hold the salmon "bake" which is actually grilled. A very nice guy named Bear directs the chow line. The meal consists of salad, baked beans, coleslaw, rice pilaf scalloped potatoes, barbecue chicken, and of course salmon. The dessert was corn bread or blue berry cake. The salmon was cooked too well for my taste, but the chicken was perfect. The camp has recreated frontier tents and they look pretty authentic when compared to the gold rush era camps in California. There is a souvenir shop of course. They also have a four person show worth skits and songs. It's pretty enjoyable.
Liarsville was part of a larger shore excursion we booked. We were driven out to the gold rush trail camp in the woods. It was great to learn some of the local history and Klondike gold rush lore in an entertaining setting. First, we were treated to a brief show in their “hippodrome,” a covered tent area with log bench seats. The show was fun and funny - reminded me of something you’d see at a Renaissance Fest, a little silly, a little bawdy but fine for families. I wish it was longer - I’m not sure if it would have been longer had we not been on an organized tour. Next, we had the chance to pan for flakes of gold. We were all given pans with pre-selected dirt and the guarantee of finding a few flakes as we swirled our pans in the water at raised tables. Our visit ended with a salmon feast and y’all, this was where Liarsville really shined. The meal was outstanding! There was a buffet area of side items and chicken. The salmon was cooked to perfection by two attentive chefs on an open grill and the brown sugar sauce they added to the salmon and cornbread was MOUTHWATERING! We went back for seconds, and would have had a third helping if we weren’t so stuffed! There was also a young man playing live music on guitar who was really talented and that added to the great experience.

Make sure you stop in to get information on the historical sites in Skagway - ranger talks and walking tours. There a free 25 minute film every 30 minutes. Restrooms clean and well kept, water fountains and refill station available. Books to purchase. Maps and information on local historical sites. Staff to answer questions and guide you in your visit. Many information displays to enjoy. Glad we stopped in. The train tracks are right next to the building and we were able to enjoy the train coming into town.
Enjoyed a perfect day walking all around Skagway. Stopped in to get my Junior Ranger booklet and badge (I’m 6.5 years old with 50 years experience). Such a quaint place. Tons of shops, eateries, artisans, and also the quintessential Alaskan found object art pieces, aging communities and pleasant town folk.
Super informative and free museum where I learned so much Gold Rush history in the region! I enjoyed watching the 25 min documentary which replays every half hour. And the museum is small but very educational! Learning about how desperate people were to find gold in the area was very eye opening. Highly recommend stopping by! The location is easy to find and right next to the White Pass train depot.
I was very impressed of this place. Although I came to Skagway so many times I never really stopped there. I just found out that you can find a very nice interesting exhibitions of the picture from the gold rush era. And on top of that, there is a cinema free inside where you can watch the movie about the history of the Gold Rush and Yukon wrote in this region of Alaska. Very interesting place to visit.
Really enjoyed the exhibits. Found them interesting and informative. Plus it was great to get my passport book stamped here!!
Skagway town had some great old buildings and was interesting to look round.
Interesting place to check out. On the back area there is a walking path along the river, we saw a lot of salmon.
Get your national parks passport stamps here, as well as coins and patches. There are restrooms available.
