Cahuita

Cahuita is a village on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, near the border with Panama. It's a gateway to Cahuita National Park, which has coral reefs and the white-sand beach of Playa Blanca. The park’s rainforest shelters toucans, monkeys and turtles. The black-sand beach of Playa Negra, known for its strong waves, is north of the village. Farther north, the Sloth Sanctuary cares for injured and orphaned sloths.

It is a beautiful national park. Authentic and you don t cross many tourists. Take a towel and swimsuit with you because there are nice beaches on the trail. And bottle of water because the humidity is very high...i recommend this place even if you don t see many animals, i saw monkey, birds...the best option is to have a guide because the végétation is so thick and green. The trail is not difficult, it is flat. What is pity, the park open late 8 am and it is too hot to see the animals, 6 or 7 am would be better to spot animals. Before covid it was earlier the opening hours. But cahuita is a nice village, and the park worth it.
Beautiful park with incredible beaches, forest, views and tons of wildlife. We saw tiny vipers, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, capuchin, coati, gars, fish, big crab in the water, crabs, hermit crabs, salamanders and lizards in less than two hours of visiting this park. Whether you’re looking for a beautiful beach to spend the day at or want to explore the forest, this park is for every nature lover. This is a must do activity when visiting the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. We will definitely be back.
what a beautiful national park! entrance is on voluntary basis, be aware that you can’t bring a snorkeling mask as it’s only allowed with guide, i guess to protect the reef. I saw sloths (two with babies), howler monkeys, eyelash vipers, toucans, oropendulas, crocodile, lizards, several colorful small birds. I am passionate about searching animals, however if you are not used to the area or don’t have good eyes, you might better take a guide if you want to see animals - they know best where to find them and all of them have a binoculars for better experience :-) beautiful beaches, just be aware of the trees marked as Manzanillo - they are highly poisonous.
Great hiking place with amazing wild life. Beware of the monkeys, they dont fear the turist and will try to take any edible items. Stay close to a tour guide when you eat or open bags in their vicinity.
Exceptional experience, great trails and wildlife. Cahuita National Park is a stunning coastal reserve known for its white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and tropical wildlife. The trails wind through lush rainforest filled with monkeys, sloths, and colorful birds, while the calm turquoise waters are perfect for snorkeling and swimming We stayed at a small hotel right at the entrance. Truly great experience.
A beautiful place with a huge diversity of flora and fauna. A great walk! It's best to arrive first thing in the morning, around 8:00 AM.
Cahuita National Park provided us with the authentic Costa Rican jungle experience! We were disappointed by Gandoca Manzanillo National Park, but not this one. It delivered on the monkey! Best of all, we got right in the middle of a raccoon fight. As innocent bystanders, we pulled back to safety and let them snarl at each other. In a minute, it was over. Parking was easy and the restrooms were clean. This was by far the best jungle experience for us on this side of the country.
Very well kept National Park. Place is spotlessly clean with almost no evidence of humans. Had opportunity to see several howling monkeys , sloths , and black spiny tail Iguana and loads more Look out for falling almond fruits !

We absolutely loved this place! It was the highlight of our Costa Rica trip. The cost is well worth it; the hosts are experts in the flora and fauna as well as the sloths themselves. Plus we were all too happy to support their wonderful work and research. The resident sloths are adorable; leaving us wanting to cuddle each one. Ignatio guided us through the sanctuary and was a wealth of information! He certainly knows his stuff and will give you some extra time if you're interested in his passion for the flora and fauna, especially the many beautiful birds! The optional boat ride was amazing! Steven, our guide, was also super well informed on all the surroundings. He has a keen eye for lizards, birds, monkeys and the peaceful sloths hanging so high up in the trees. We were fortunate to see a rare sight: a wild sloth lower down in a tree, quite close to the creek. Wow! We couldn't have asked for a better experience! Thank you Ignatio and Steven!
We unfortunately weren’t able to do the canoe tour where you can see sloths in the wild but we still had a beautiful and touching visit. We got to meet the permanent resident sloths—rescued and disabled sloths who are lovingly cared for at the sanctuary. Seeing them up close was an unforgettable experience. Our guide was so kind and knowledgeable, and we learned so much about these incredible creatures, their habits, and the challenges they face in the wild. A special highlight was being checked in by the founder’s daughter—she was an absolute darling and radiated warmth and love for the animals. This sanctuary does such important work—rescuing injured or orphaned sloths, providing lifelong care for the disabled ones, and rehabilitating others so they can return to the wild. If you’re in the area, this is a must-do tour. It’s heart-opening, educational, and supports a beautiful mission of compassion and protection for one of Costa Rica’s most iconic animals. 💚
Absolutely a life changing experience! While we were looking at the adult sloths an outdoor male made his way in to check out the girls. We had such a fun time and watching the babies exercise was the highlight of our trip. Amazing staff and very informative! A+++++++++
A must see experience if you’re in the area! You WILL see sloths on this tour! Very knowledgeable, funny, and engaged tour guide. The visit has about a dozen of their permanent resident sloths. For a small extra fee, you take an hour canoe ride and see more wildlife. We were lucky to see many wild sloths during our canoe ride. Great, well priced tour where the fees go to support the worthy cause of sloth protection and care.
The sloth sanctuary is one of the highlights on the Caribbean coast. The tours are a little bit expensive, but the money goes for a good cause. They also have rooms inside the sanctuary where you can stay, and if you arrive after they close, you need to tap lightly on the horn and they will open the gates. While there are many sloths and you get to get very close to them, you cannot hold them or touch them, as many people expect. It is not a petting zoo.
Santiago! What a guide :) Kindly presented us the sloths that are in rehabilitation. Could answer all of our questions and had anecdotes for everyone! The canoe tour for an extra 5 bucks was also worth it. But seeing animals is a flip of a coin. We were lucky to see monkeys, crabs, basilica and sloths.
I had an amazing experience with my girlfriend! Would highly recommend the Insider’s Tour. You get to see the baby sloths and an optional tour down the river. I think we'll be back sometime in the future!
Amazing people operate this sloth sanctuary. Great tours and extensive explanations about the inhabitants. If you get the chance, GO!!

Great local place. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They take amazing care of the animals and have a very strong mission for recovery and release of the animals kept, which is great to see. Keep in mind there is only one tour every day at 11am. Highly recommend. 👌
Wonderful couple of hours in beautiful gardens with super cute animals (with sad stories unfortunately) Worth a visit if you are in the area
Nothing really special about this place. It was close to where we stayed. It was convenient for us to go there, so we went.
Place on google says it closes at 6pm. Last tour was at 11am, you cannot even enter the site. Waste of time. Not a great way to raise money to save animals.
It is a beautiful and very informative tour, however I worry for the animals' living conditions. At every cage (most of them very small, little grass, just dirt and sticks) we were told by the guide that they are going to or are planning on building a big enclosure for whatever animals we were looking at. However, no construction was seen anywhere. I feel bad for the animals who have to live in these tiny cages and enclosures, even though they are safe from the wild where they couldn't survive on their own. I don't think I am alone when I say that Tree of Life is not investing nearly enough money to better the living situation for these animals.
Enjoyed our tour learning about the recovering animals and the botanical garden. It is important to note that you can only enter with the 11am tour, there is no other entry. It costs $20 and lasts about 90 mins. Well worth it as part of a chilled out day around Cahuita!
Please do not visit, this place should be closed. The animals are kept in small areas, do not seem well cared for. Also it is quite expensive, 16$ for a short tour. Any attraction that is too expensive for the locals to visit should be treated with suspicion. There are plenty of animals to be seen in the National Park nearby, and even in the trees beside the road. Do not support this unwelcome selfish business.
Beautiful , well maintained gardens are a pleasure to walk through. The tour was interesting and informative, as well the animals are well cared for. Highly recommend visiting.

The chocolate guide and medicinal plant lesson with Luis and his family was the best and most unique experience I’ve had. It ended up being a private tour because only my friend and I signed up for that day. We felt very spiritually connected to what he was saying and awakened by his presence. Not to mention the chocolate was delicious and we tried it at every stage of the cocoa.
Booked the Snorkeling and Hiking. A GREAT experience. Juan Jr. and the snorkel guide were amazing during our time in the water, they took us out on a boat to spots that were amazing conditions for snorkeling in the reefs. The guide did a great job pointing out all the sea life and beautiful coral. Juan Sr. took us on a beautiful hike through the national park and spotted bats, wasps, plant life, sloths, snakes, and of course monkeys. 10/10 recommend.
TLDR: Bad communication from Willie's Tours. The tour guides were extremely unprepared, the whole experience was so uncomfortable that we left early. We went on the Bri Bri Indigineous Tour and it was a terrible experience. First, the communication about transportation was slow and confusing. We were expecting to meet at their office in Cahuita, based on the website. After me having to send multiple emails to them to get information, we found out that they would pick us up at our hotel and we had to tip the driver a certain amount in cash. When we did get to tour location, we were left by our driver and told to follow a young girl into the forest who did not say a word to us the whole walk. We ended up in a house, where it took a few minutes of awkward silence for the only English speaker to talk to us. The next couple of hours consisted of awkward silences which were broken by a few demonstrations or some actual tour information. All of this was frequently interrupted by phone calls, smoke breaks, and chats in Spanish that included comments about us. The guy who did speak English also frequently yelled at the other women in the house, which made us very uncomfortable. On top of that, he was sick when we visited, but still touched a lot of the food and plants that we were then asked to taste. The final straw was when we were walked outside (without the English speaker) and silently watched for 15 minutes while one of the women grinded cacao. We ended up leaving early, happy we did not have to eat the lunch in a seemingly unsanitary place, feeling very uncomfortable the whole time. The hosts were friendly enough, but it felt like they were not all equipped to handle a tour and just went through the motions of one to lure tourists in. Stay away from this tour and from Willie's Tours as a whole and you'll be enjoying your vacation a lot more.
My wife and I booked a tour that was cancelled by the company. They refused us a refund despite no service being provided. Save your money and don't trust these people. They are dishonest and will try to scam you out of your money. I'm still trying to dispute the charges with my bank, and Willie's is refusing a refund until I decide to give them a partial refund. They claimed we booked the wrong tour; however, the titles and descriptions of the tours were still ambiguous even after explanation. After the guide told us he could do the tour we thought we signed up for, they tried doubling the price, and we declined. Since then, they've tried to shift the entire responsibility onto us, despite having a system that allowed us to book within what they deemed to be an inappropriate time frame. This is a pathetic business that tries to manipulate its customers. If this were an honorable company, they would've just given me a refund.
The Bribri Indigenous Village, Chocolate, Medicinal Plants Bioenergy Cleansing Ceremony with Willie’s Tours was one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. After Jorge’s thorough explanation of the clan’s history and beliefs, we were introduced to Ana and Luis (the Healer Shaman). They graciously accepted us as part of the family and we learned about their spiritual beliefs, medicinal plants, helped to make chocolate and participated in a magical energy cleansing ceremony. Truly an amazing experience and I look forward to visiting again!
We did a snorkeling tour. We had four adults and four kids 10 and under. They were great, and very helpful and understanding with the kids. The beach break with fruit was really nice. Good price, good tour, and nice people.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE PEOPLE! Terrible customer service, confusing directions, company was entirely unhelpful. Left me confused in another country with no one to contact. Horrible experience with their guide trying to upsell in person, accommodations were subpar, and tour was overpriced. Only good part was the transportation, which they basically just handed me off to another agency for. You are far better off booking the basics ahead of time, and book tours once you get to CR. Ask the locals they know better.
There was an option that worked out absolutely perfectly for us. We took a bus to the east coast and we’re planning on busing back inland. We stumbled across the opportunity to take a boat to tortugero and then a boat and (4hour!) taxi ride to la fortuna, where we wanted to go anyway. The package included all this, turtle tour, and a hotel in tortugero with breakfast. We had not planned on going to tortugero, but it was awesome! We saw a green sea turtle laying eggs and babies going into the ocean on our tour with augusto. (He also took us on a boat ride before our boat ride in the AM). This was so much better than taking the bus back because we got to see so much more, it didn’t feel like a day wasted to traveling to our new destination. We learned a lot by having time with locals.

Started with a hike through the national park where we saw lots of animals including white faced and howler monkeys, sloths, vine snakes, lizards, birds, frogs and various plants, fruits and herbs. The hike lasted about 1.5hrs and our guide was informative and knowledgeable. We then stopped at the top of the national park for fruit and a quick swim before we were taken by boat for over 1hr of snorkeling. It's not the best reef I have seen and the water was not crystal clear but we did see a variety of fish, sea turtles and a manta ray. It was an enjoyable trip! After the snorkeling session we then headed to a nearby restaurant for our included lunch before a return transfer direct to our hotel. They provided life vests, masks and fins plus had some bin bags to keep bags dry on the boat. I suggest you bring some bug spray for the national park and of course, sun cream. It cost about 65usd in cash and was pretty good value for the amount of time we had on the trip.
Fantastic tour! Antonio took us on a boat to Cahuita National Park, and we hiked back through the jungle. I learned so much about this area, the ecosystem, and conservation efforts to maintain it’s beauty. Definitely book your next tour through this family-run business!
Went on a “all day” tour that was advertised as including Iguana reserve, Bri Bri Indian village, chocolate experience, and lunch. They drove us from Puerto Viejo to Cahuita , had to hang around their office for 45 minutes wait to pay and for them to get organized. Then they drove us to BriBri. 1 1/2 hours of tour was driving and waiting already. Guide then told us that they no longer go to the iguana reserve but they would stop at the side of the road and see if they could find an iguana. Not quite the same thing. They told us after we paid and started the tour. After BriBri activity they drove us back to Cahuita for lunch and then back to Puerto Viejo. So all day tour was about 1 1/2 hours of activity and 4 hours driving around. Overpriced and poorly organized. Would not recommend
We did the Cahuita snorkeling and hiking tour! Everyone at Cahuita Tours was very kind and overall we enjoyed the experience. My only critiques were that the bus we were picked up was not in the best condition and AC hardly worked. Water was advertised as being included, but it was not, so bring a LOT of your own! The snorkeling was great, the hike was okay but felt a bit long and really hot. In the future, I'd probably lean towards just doing the snorkeling part of the tour!
We did the Indigenous tour, it was last minute booking, 70 dollars for 6 hours, and lunch at coco's, which was delicious! The tour was amazing, such a nice change from a nature tour l, although se still saw lots of nature, the most, best and biggest iguanas! Visiting the Bri Bri tribe was fab, learnt so much about chocolate making, bought some to take home. The. The leader of the tribe took as around teacher us about different plants which was very interesting. After that we went to the waterfall for a swim, fruit and some cocoloco cocktails! Finished off with a very tasty cascado from coco's. Our guide Aaron was great, very knowledgeable, and very east to talk with. Would highly recommend this tour!!
We booked the snorkeling and hike tour in Cahuita. The snorkeling was good, we went to two locations - the first location was excellent, the second not as much. But that might just be a matter of the day and water conditions. Really enjoyed the hike back through the national park, our guide Kasey gave us so much information about plants and animals. She was happy to answer any question and she had a great energy. Pura vida!
All of the staff at Cahuita Tour were awesome! They were really nice, and one staff member did an impromptu lesson/eco tour with us while we were waiting for other group members to arrive. He showed us a Costa Rica map and told us about different places throughout the country, went outside and found a huge purple grasshopper under a magnifying glass and told us about the grasshoppers defenses, gave us a plant to tear open and smell, and walked outside with us to point out a sloth - it felt like I was in science class again! And this was all before the snorkeling tour, which was also amazing, of course. They were so friendly and I highly recommend Cahuita Tour.
We were so happy to have found this company after 3 bad experiences with tour operators in the area. They were welcoming, spoke fluent English. Had a focus on reef and personal safety and were organized and kind. Took credit cards. 1st trip snorkeling and hike - equipment was good. Boat was comfortable. We had ample time in the water with some discussion/identification of Coral and fish. We have been around the world snorkeling and were happy. There were some large schools of 100 + adult fish, with most fish at nursery size. Great diversity in species. The hike was informative and we saw some great species from monkeys, snakes, toucans, birds++ and a variety of fauna. We were happy with fruits at break and lunch was terrific. For $60 this was a better value than most, including transportation. Average in town is $25 for a snorkel with no guide in the water. Note: Don't be fooled by hotels offering $49 tour with no transport or lunch as the hotel is taking 1/2 the money. We were so happy with the tour we booked another tour for birdwatching. We saw 36 species many being lifers. The guide Antonio had a good eye and knew some great spots in the area. He also had a lot of knowledge of history and the vegetation in the area.
