We went here as it's on the historical Marblehead self-guided tour. It's essentially a bunker at a high point overlooking the habour so don't have visions of a grand castle!
Luckily we managed to join a ranger for a quick walk and explanation of the 3 'rooms' there which gave us the history and background to the Fort, she was very good. Otherwise it's a great place to walk around and enjoy great views. There's a very small car park a short walk away, as you cannot drive up (it's a private road).

This quaint fort is such a nice spot to visit for some quick history, distant views of 3 lighthouses, and a nice drive to get there. A guide, Michelle, gave us a quick tour and added some history. There are free to use binocular stations, signs and plaques with information, and the best part was the community use of it as kids ride their bikes and others jogged, making it a still actively used location.

Another beautiful spot to take in the scenery and all the boats being moored. Only downfall is the public restrooms were closed and the hours listed on the door were from 8am-4pm... A very short drive from Salem & 100% worth it. This cemetery has been featured in several movies including Hocus Pocus & the Good Son. We found both locations however the scene from the Good Son was a bit more difficult because the water well shown in the movie does not exist.
Movies aside, it is a beautiful old cemetery & the views of Marblehead & the ocean from atop this hill, as well as the hill directly across the street are spectacular.

We visited Old Burial Hill out of our love for "Hocus Pocus," and it turned out to be an excellent and tranquil experience. Situated in close proximity to the ocean, Old Burial Hill provided a number of benches and seating areas where you can relish the scenic views. Despite our visit in early August when the trees were abundant and obstructing our view, we managed to find some of the movie's filming locations, which added to our enjoyment. Furthermore, the remarkable historical significance and the age of the tombstones make this destination an absolute must-visit when exploring Salem.

One of the oldest cemeteries in the area, there are a number of interesting colonial stones- including what may be one of the most famous/written about. Several memorials to the Revolutionary Navy including the grave of John Parker. Marblehead claims the birthplace to the US Navy.
Also of interests for movies buffs- this is the cemetery used in the original Hocus Pocus movie. The main scene in the movie took place off to the right if you come up the stairs where the historic marker is.

The landing is a quaint restaurant in downtown Marblehead, serving up great food and a super inviting atmosphere. I had the crab cake sandwich, which was delicious. The menu has many options to choose from, and the drink menu is huge as well. Views of the harbor are great, too. My waitress Karen was amazing! Great service from her, and the food came out quick as well. Parking is a little difficult as there is only a small lot in front. Otherwise you'll have to find street parking, which isn't usually that bad. I highly recommend The Landing for a nice lunch or dinner by the harbor.

The location is great, right on the water and the deck is spacious enough to not feel like you are on top of the next table. Our drinks were cold, the food was tasty and the view was nice. The only negative is the service. Our waitress was friendly but I left like they were under staffed. We waited a while for drinks and food as she had to juggle several tables. A quaint and a bit weathered seafood place right on Marblehead harbor. Walked in for late lunch, sat by water outside. Place was busy and was serving bar menu with not many choices. Honestly didn't know what to expect for their culinary quality. But what a pleasant surprise! We were impressed by their Tuna tartare!
There were service hiccups with our young server like forgetting our drinks and not taking it off our bill, but sunny weather and their delectable food made the experience forgivable.
-Tuna tartare $21 melts in your mouth delicate finely minced tuna, served with pickled ginger, togarashi aioli, homemade chips and green miso vinaigrette
-Fried calamari $19 fresh and tender, served with Chipotle aioli and hot pomodoro. Was served hot and fried clean.

Served with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon, sweep pepper relish. Would love to return if in the area again.

Erin was such a fantastic host — super friendly and fun to chat with! Our group of four came in as walk-ins and got an outdoor table overlooking the water.
We ordered the crispy haddock, shrimp burrata ravioli, and garlic bread. The crispy haddock was AMAZING. Even my friend who doesn’t like fish enjoyed it! The charred asparagus, cherry tomatoes, sauce, and potato purée were all perfect together.
One tiny improvement or request is I wish they gave a little more of the veggies (like four asparagus spears instead of two).
Overall fantastic place with fresh seafood. I would come here again!

We came here on our honeymoon, the first night we came into Marblehead, our server Erin made every other restaurants job hard because of how great the food and her service was. She was able to give us recommendations for things to do around MA. My wife also got some marina on her brand new white sweater and Erin was kind enough to lend and then give her a tide to go pen. Great energy at this place! From the moment we walked in, we could tell it was going to be a great night. The ambiance was lively, and the patrons’ faces reflected pure enjoyment.
We arrived early, and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us, practically tripping over one another to make us comfortable while we waited. They seated us at the bar and even asked other patrons to make room for us. I had been bracing for the occasional grumpy customer, but instead, we were surrounded by friendly people with a “the more, the merrier” attitude. We struck up meaningful conversations with locals who not only welcomed us but also shared tips on things to do in the area. The type of crowd a place attracts says a lot about the establishment, and this one had all the right vibes.
The music was perfectly suited to the crowd, and I couldn’t help but be amazed by the stunning water views. Overall, a solid 5-star rating for ambiance.
The bartender was a pro—courteous, efficient, and handling the crowd with ease. He quickly handed us menus and drinks while serving everyone with impressive skill. We started with the calamari, which was crispy and fresh—a great start.
Once seated at our table, the service remained top-notch. By this point, we had interacted with at least four or five employees, and each one seemed genuinely invested in ensuring we had a fantastic experience. Another 5 stars for service.
Now, onto the food. Simply put, they knocked it out of the park. As a seafood restaurant, expectations were high, and they delivered. I ordered the salmon, which I don’t typically go for, but something told me to try it. It was a revelation. The creamy farro risotto was to die for, the salmon was textbook perfection, and—shockingly—the grilled, smoked lettuce stole the show. I wasn’t prepared for this level of execution.
We also had clams and a salad, and while I won’t go into detail, suffice it to say they were equally well-crafted and delicious. Yet another 5-star rating for the food.
All in all, my honest assessment? I can’t wait to go back—and come back, I will.

Terrible experience trying to get a marriage license. It took two years and there is only one person that can perform the ceremony as a justice of the peace. We tried to do it one year and Robin said it was hard to “coordinate a time to get married with her schedule during an election year“, still unclear on what that actually means. The next year was easier but she only works part time and had very odd hours available. When you initiate a marriage license with the town you have to pay $30 for an application. Since Robin delayed us a year we had to pay again the next year another $30. For the actual marriage license it was $100 under the table to her which was sketchy and not very reputable as it should have gone to the town. The ceremony was awful and very hastened on her part. $100 for 2 min, I think the town can do better with this service.

Nice, clean, little beach. This was a 3 minute car ride from where I was staying in Marblehead. The parking is $25 for non residents, and unfortunately, no dogs allowed, but it was too hot anyway. The beach also had a pavilion to sit under, a snack bar, playground, and bathrooms. Make sure you hide food because the seagulls will go after it. I watched a seagull go up to someone's things, open a bag of skinny pop popcorn, and run away with the bag!

Very cute little place. It's smaller so it gets loud. It's a neat setting in a pretty old building right on the water. Views are great! There is seating outside as well. We got clam chowder and the lobster bisque and it was great! Fried haddock au gratin was very good. We also got the fried platter that had shrimp, haddock, clams, fries and onion rings. Went bold and had some seafood. Sampled the fish and chips, chicken tenders and lobster roll thanks to my family. Lobster roll was awesome. The fnc was yummy, batter was good, fish great. Chips/fries were good for them being thin. They had that McD's shape but 10 times better! Tenders were great!
I had the local brew, the citrus one. Nothing to write home about that. Had the lobster bisque and butterfly shrimp. Both were fabulous, but the batter was good, not great!

Maddie’s Sail Loft, unpretentious with a dark interior, is favored by savvy locals and smart tourists. We were served excellent food and the prices are right. We blew into town, our first visit, and there’s no direct route to M’head. Read the reviews, could have chosen a waterfront joint that was way too pricey, opted for Maddie’s and so glad we did. Courtney, the lone bartender and server was great and fun. The place was very busy. She’s been there some 7 years. The Margaritas were generous. The Fish and Chips were EXO. Fresh Haddock and piping hot. Killer fries. The Onion rings were hand battered, not frozen and soo good. Never had Fish Tacos, had seen fried fish served in the shells at other places, these were fresh pcs. of haddock within coiled shells, unable to pick up from the moist filling, but were tasty. I’d choose something else next time. Pabst Blue Ribbon is $3, the Hamburger Special is $8.99 served M-F. There is an upper dining room that was closed this day in October. It was a good day.

Maddie’s is such a charming spot. The Topsail area pours a strong cocktail, and the ambiance is hard to beat. That being said, my friend and I went a few evenings ago, and for being a slow night, the service was very slow. We also had some apps (a Caesar and some Mozz sticks) and neither was very good. The Caesar was nothing special, and the Mozz sticks weren’t crisp nor was the Mozz pulling apart. Our drinks were good and full pours, though, and the ambiance is worth a visit. Stayed in Marblehead 5 nights, ate here 3 times! Obviously extremely popular with locals as it was busy every time, we just put our names down and went for a walk by the habour to pass the time - their reservation system tells you how long and how many tables in front of you but it was never more than about 30 mins.
Popular for a reason too - great food, good sized portions, but be warned as the drinks are served strong! Not complaining as it was only a short walk from the hotel.
Just a comment on the welcome - we went into a packed downstairs the first night, and I was just trying to find out where to sit, how to go upstairs, and a local couple guided me to the empty spot next to them to sit, and couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful.

A relaxed atmosphere very close to the harbor. The place seemed popular with locals — we were apparently the only tourists! Our dishes (clam and shrimp linguine) were delicious, and the service was very friendly. Prices were totally affordable (which is rare for restaurants near the harbor). Don’t order fresh tuna or special! I ordered the fresh tuna steak special for takeout and it was not just raw, blood had seeped to the container. The fish was not undercooked, the fish was not properly cleaned for the purpose of serving as a rare tuna steak. I left a message for the staff that it was inedible, no dinner oh well. OR SO I THOUGHT. I received threatening text messages and phone calls from the owner Loretta Lang that I am banned from her restaurant for telling her staff my tuna order was inedible. About this one:
This mansion is a hidden gem in the heart of the quaint, coastal town of Marblehead. Built in 1768 for wealthy merchant Jeremiah Lee, acquired later by a bank, it is now a museum with guided tours, open seasonally.
I have visited many historic houses over the years, and this one just became one of my favorite!
Almost all its room are open to the public on all three floors - which is not common - and fully furnished with period pieces curated to the detail. I saw here objects that I've hardly or never seen in other houses, such as (and not limited to) several nursery-related items, drinking glass coolers, water buckets to use to stop fires, sewing supplies, special vases for crocuses etc.
On the third floor there is "museum inside the museum" with a special room showcasing unique objects manufactured or crafted in Marblehead.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable and sweet. The day I visited, we were only 3 people in the tour, and it lasted about an hour.
If you are visiting Salem, this mansion is just a quick car ride from downtown Salem. I recommend it especially if you are visiting the North Shore because you are interested in the local Maritime/nautical history.

Open only seasonally. Finding a parking spot near the house might be a bit hard on busier times of the day. There is a small parking area adjacent to the garden of the mansion, but it is not for visitors only. The other option is street parking, that in Marblehead, with its narrow and twisty roads, is not always that easy.

I was so pleased to have gotten into the mansion right before they closed for the season. It is a must see spot in Marblehead, if not historic New England. I really enjoyed the house itself. I loved that we could tour all three floors and almost every room. Going upstairs and downstairs is not common in historic house tours. We found parking down the road and walked less than 5 minutes to the house on a busy tour day. Unfortunately the tour guide had a lot to say but I’m not sure what she really taught us. I would’ve loved to know more history about the family and felt I really got to know who lived there and what they were like. Overall I would recommend for the price and experience.

5 corners was recommended by a friend as having exceptional food. What was exception was the atmosphere and what was very good was the service.
The food is good just not exceptional. The Chicken Liver Pate and the Brussels sprout appetisers were excellent. The French onion soup and oysters decent. The Entrées ranged from very good (Sole and steak Frites) to the good ( Duck confit and Chicken. The CK Burger was ordinary and I guess while we enjoyed our time together, we all left feeling that for the price charged it was not quite up to the mark.

I was told by multiple people this was the best restaurant in Marblehead, and I am inclined to agree. We had an absolutely fantastic meal here the other night. The cocktails, the wine, and the food were all excellent. We started with the tartare, which was wonderful with the fried wontons. We then had the duck confit (light and citrusy), pork chop (smoky and juicy), and the skate wing (superb). All three of us enjoyed our entrees immensely. We then had the sticky toffee pudding, which you cannot go wrong with. The staff was so helpful and attentive, and the ambiance is chill and clean. I will definitely be back, and I highly recommend it.

Really great food!! The restaurant is also super cute and upscale. They made me a delicious nonalcoholic margarita. We got the $2 oysters (only available 5-6) and I got the grey sole. We ate here during our first night and had a wonderful time! The place itself is beautifully decorated on the inside and out and the ambiance was great. We had a reservation and didn't wait for our table at all. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and gave great recommendations especially when it came to our wines!

We visited the House of The Seven Gables for the first time this week and were absolutely blown away!! Our tour guide, Stephen, was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. His delivery of information about the history of the grounds and house was engaging and entertaining!! We absolutely loved the experience. This was a treat for me being that I read the book. Its a very neat tour and a very cool house and the grounds are SPECTACULAR. It has very little to do with the Salem Witches though. If you like old buildings and historical feeling things, this may be worth it for you. If you skip the house tour your won't be missing anything truly relevant to the trials or Halloween. I do recommend the grounds tour though. Especially if you love a majestic view. The pictures I took do not do it justice. Also, no ghosts were felt or spotted during the tour.

A visit to the museum was the first thing I had in mind when we planned our trip to Salem. They showcased actual artifacts from the trials and gave detailed stories and backgrounds to the people affected. I also appreciated the timeline of events post Salem Witch Trials..
Also to note, the Yin Yu Tang house was such a marvel! It transports you to another place and time and gives you an insight of generational living of another culture.
Kudos to the museum staff!
I recommend to order your tickets online prior to visiting, going as soon as it opens, and possibly dedicating most of your day here.
We parked at the Witch City Mall parking garage (~$11/day) and parked on the top floor. More spots available and you get a unique view of Salem.

I'm not sure if you should, or could, but tickets in advance because we didn't have to. We walked right in, paid and went straight into the exhibit. It's fascinating that this house still stands. They did say all the items, and furniture, etc were not used by the family. Those items are part of another exhibit at another museum. I believe as stated by many (and also on the NPS book) that this National Park was the first In the USA. It is actually very nice and very large. We enjoyed walking around specially as we were visiting in summer.
It can get very warm though. A lot to see here including the historical store house 'The Peabody'.

The Salem Maritime National Historic Site is a national historic park in Salem. It is the oldest National Historic Site in the US. The museum offers the chance to see a wharf, lighthouse, customs house, historic ship, and many other historic buildings from Salem’s time as a busy harbor.
Unfortunately the Friendship, a historic ship built in 1797 was not on display at the park. Currently, it is being restored. The lighthouse and wharf were nice to see, but little else was open. Perhaps, due to the time of year there were very few staff around to direct you to what was open. This could be a really interesting park, but without the Friendship it’s not the same.

We visited on a Friday around noon in mid-June 2025.
We found parking by the Salem Armory Visitor Center near Witch City Mall. We could not use the parking garages because our minivan with cargo carrier was too tall. We circled the lots maybe 5 times before we saw someone leaving.
We walked over to the visitor center first where we got maps and NPS Passport Cancellation Stamps. We also bough t some merch and checked out the few exhibits and took some pictures. Then we headed down to where the majority of the points of interest were near the water. Our first stop was going to be the Waite & Peirce Park Store. They have additional NPS Passport Cancellation stamps and also has a many items not available at the store in the visitor center. So make sure you visit both.
Then across the street was the Custom House. This was the only other thing that was open to us on a Friday in Mid-June 2025. We went in and explored the 2 floors worth of rooms. There were a number of rangers here to answer questions as well. There was were many rangers in fact I was curious why some of the other locations weren't open for us to explore. We walked around outside for a bit and decided it was time for a late lunch.
Overall it was a nice experience. All the rangers we spoke too at each of the sites were great and since many of the places were closed, we would visit again to try and hit more of the sites. Same goes for Salem in general. We only had enough time in our road trip for half a day here and that was just not enough to see everything we wanted to.

I visited during the Halloween 💀🎃 Weekend and explored the area. According to information ℹ️ that I read online, this is the first national historic site in the US. It was established on March 17th, 1938. The National Parks Service oversees the site.
Being nighttime and late October, places were closed 🔒 for the evening or the season. The sailing boat ⛵ the Friendship was heat shrink-wrapped for the season. The area was active with people who wanted to get close to Salem Harbor.

Pretty cool historic place. Soooo much commerce went through this port at one time. They only have 3 wharfs left from their original 50. So this place was once a massive booming center for commerce. They have a 1000 foot wharf, and 2 smaller one. The larger one had an old lighthouse at the end.
Pretty neat walk. You can also see the old railroad tracks they built so they could load goods right onto the train. This was during the age of sail so 1700s.

I ordered a California BLT, which came on ciabatta. In addition to the B, L, and T, there was turkey (the most dominant element, in my opinion) and avocado (the California part, I guess). At $12+, it isn’t cheap but it’s a generous serving and the quality of the ingredients are clearly good quality. The turkey is very thin, delicate, and is complemented well by the creamy richness of the avocado and mayo. The crisp bacon adds great textural contrast and smokiness. The ciabatta is light with a satisfying chew. All in all, I’d say that it was certainly worth the price.

The best lobster roll I've tasted at $36. Better than legal seafood (Peabody and market Street locations), better than Luke's lobsters boston, better than Bambara Cambridge, better than Boston sail loft, better than Turners in Salem. (All places I have had lobster rolls the past 2 weeks.). Simply the best so far. I had one at their shop and then took one deconstructed for dinner.
The cashier ladies were super friendly and helpful. They said the best time to come would be August. That's when lobster season is going on and prices per lobster pound can go from $17 /lb in April to $7 /lb in August. Which for them means they can sell lobster rolls as cheap as $25 which is a great deal for something this tasty.
In short, way better than the red lobster chain restaurants in California. New England area is definitely blessed and may have ruined lobster for me since I can only have this here.

The hidden local favorite seafood place in Marblehead. Small business by the water, you can get the best lobster roll LOADED with lobster meat (not just the meat from the claws). Comes in 2 flavors: mayonnaise or lemon butter. Both are amazingly good. They also have lobsters, crab cakes, fish cakes, chowders, etc. you can get raw seafood here as well. Had a great lunch at Little Harbor Lobster Co. today. My friend said it was the best lobster roll of his life, and the spicy shrimp roll was delicious (though I could have handled more spice). Well-managed museum with friendly staff. Our guide, Mariana, was knowledgeable and answered all our questions patiently. Tickets go online a day before at 10 PM and tend to sell out quickly, so it’s best to book early. We visited in October, so not sure how busy it gets in other months. And the items that were on display in the “museum” were also a let down and had very little/nothing to do with the actual witch trials at all. We saw a much better exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum, that included copies of documents and letters as well as items owned by the victims.
Overall, I would never go and pay the $54 to do this again, and honestly disappointed we spent THAT much for our visit,
I fully advise anyone visiting in the future to keep all these things in mind. Because after our visit, we fully understand why they don’t allow filming inside. They definitely don’t want anyone to see how underwhelming it is before going and lose their business. 🥴

The first part of the museum was a bit campy and felt somewhat dated. It wasn't terrible and I learned a good bit from it. The second section of the museum was nice and informative. Make sure to get there before your call time because even during the weekday it was very busy. We visited Salem two days before Halloween, so the whole town was super fun and festive, even though the weather wasn’t great. We came across the Salem Witch Museum 1692 and decided to give it a try. It was very busy, with lines to get in, but everything was organized well. You scan a QR code on a sign to buy your tickets, and then line up about 30 minutes before your time slot.
Once inside, you enter an auditorium with benches along the wall and small tufted circle seats in the middle. The show begins with the story of the Salem witch trials, told through mannequins positioned around the room, paired with lighting effects and narration. It was dramatized in an interesting way — not quite what I expected, but well done.
Afterward, you move into a second exhibit area where a staff member shares more background about witches, the trials, and related cultural and historical facts. The entire experience lasted about 45 minutes.

I loved the experience but wish it wasn't so structured toward the end. The narrated story was very educational and unique compared to other self guided museums but once you get past that, you get ushered into a smaller room, given a ton of information really fast, and then are expected to head out without being given enough room or space to really observe or read all the displays. I would still recommend going at least once because it's one of those things you just have to do at least once. But I won't go out of my way to go back unless I have a very good reason.

It was fine. I heard some not so great reviews so I just went for the ghosts that allegedly show up in the photos. The ghosts did not show up in mine.
It's essentially a retelling of the events of Salem with some staged exhibits or diorama as they are sometimes called, for dramatic affect. Its worth seeing if you have the time and money. My family was taking a vacation visiting all the new England states. Of course we had to have Salem on the list of places to check out. We have always wanted to visit this town because of the history of it. The witch trials memorial was cool but also very surreal. Reading about this, and actually seeing the memorials of people who were killed and also having it listed on how they died was an eye-opener. There were a lot of people visiting the memorial and people are leaving little keepsake’s on the benches where the memorials were. The memorials are right next to a cemetery that has to be probably the oldest one I’ve ever seen. Definitely need to check this place out if you’re in town. This is one of the few places you do not need to book reservations for first.

When I was going there I knew it was going to be more of an attraction than coming to see a part of American history. This place is very special and I hope it is honored. As I did wander through the streets My eyes weren't focused on the books as much as the architecture around there I must say it was beautiful. Count Orlok's Nightmare Gallery was, hands-down, the best gallery in Salem. No pictures or video inside, and there is a reason for that. Unbelievable statues, both modern and classic. The staff are really cool. Definitely, worth a visit. The pictures I took are from the store at the end of the gallery. The store has pretty awesome items to choose from. They even have a VHS shelf to buy old-school tapes of classic movies. I will return.

Okay so this was my favorite experience in our trip to Salem. It just felt good. The price of admission was entirely reasonable for the experience that you got and still we able to spend some money in the gift shop. Like I think that places sometimes lose that thought when they start raising the price of their tickets and then you spent so much on the ticket you can't afford to buy something while you're there. But that's not this totally reasonable in price. The gentleman that was setting up out front with the signs and everything is the one that sold us on the experience and we booked the ticket right there they had lots of availability at that time but from what I understand but later in the day we're completely sold out. All of the figurines are really well done and eerily watch you with their eyes in a really creepy way. I love the original universal monsters those were some of my favorites as well as the giant ghostbuster I would give anything to have that slimer in my house as part of my Ghostbusters collection. The only negative that's I had with isn't really much of a negative at all is that you can't take any pictures in the exhibit, but I totally understand why. For those people who don't know count orlok is the old black and white dracula real name, but I made up an alternative story the count orlok was Vlad's brother and is just trying to get by in a modern world by running a wax museum. He's also gone super politically correct so he says things like " I want to suck your blood, with consent" and "look into my eyes... Respectfully" imagine a dracula that needs you to invite them in, but also asks for you to sign a consent form... That's hilarious. Anyway go to count orloks, if you only do entertainment activity-thing in town. This would be my pick.

Worth the visit to see a recreated portion of one the trials. Also a brief visit to a recreated dungeon where accused people were held. We went to the first presentation in the morning which had very few people. The atmosphere in this old building adds the creepy feeling.
Had to remove one star as the guid seems to be rushed at the end to move on through the dungeon area. Nut we only had a few people. I would be concerned for there being adaquate time if the presentation had many more people. Otherwise the information was interesting and well done

I visited the Witch Dungeon Museum during the off-season in November, and while the room was almost empty, the experience was still excellent — maybe even better because of the smaller crowd. The visit begins with a short theatrical performance, and the two actresses did a fantastic job, especially considering there were so few people in the audience. They have one coin from a local ship wreck. that's it! the rest of the "museum is life size dioramas covering three pirates from the area. The Salem witch village is full of touristy attractions and often schlocky exhibits. We wandered through and enjoyed seeing what was on offer. People watching was a good time, as well. However, we really enjoyed the actual historical remnants from the past. I recommend you take the time to go to one of the old cemeteries and get insights into some of the rich history. We also saw the exterior of the witch's house but did not want to spend $12 each to go inside. The statue of Bewitched in the square is cute but not worth much more than a minute or two. If you can locate it go to the Ropes Garden, and enjoy a stroll up both sides of Chestnut Street. The lovely old homes are a real delight.

For the real inside story of the witch trials, go to the Peabody Essex Museum. It's exhibition and details for local exploration are absolutely the latest and most thorough I am aware of. It's also a superb museum, not just witchcraft subjects.

Basically, it was just ok. I did not visit the Witch Village just The Lost Library. I had been looking forward to going here as it seemed like such a cute concept. They did have some cute decor but they didn’t have anything I was really interested in buying as nothing stood out as being unique. There were not enough days in my travel itinerary to cover this area. So rich in history so much to learn and see. The houses were so different from Houston I could have spent days walking around. The history is so tragic and mind boggling boy am I glad times have changed. You definitely feel a sense of sadness for the victims and in some spots a heavy heart. As for it being spooky and haunted hands down YES very true we did a tour and a picture that one of the ladies captured scared the crap out of me not to mention some creepy little things that happened to my hubby and I. We had such a great time at this haunted house! The gentleman running the line was wonderful—very friendly and kept us entertained during the short wait. Inside, the actors were fantastic, really feeding off our reactions and making the whole experience even more fun. I don’t typically leave reviews but to call this a haunted house is insane especially for the price…we walked through and got “scared” maybe twice by people who weren’t even in a costume? The wax museum was scarier than this. It also took less than 2 minutes to walk through the whole thing despite being advertised as the longest haunted house in Salem, while that may be true don’t be fooled. We got to the end and couldn’t believe we had actually just paid for that experience. It was honestly laughable how much of a scam the haunted house was, if I could give less than one star I would…although we did get a good laugh.

This place I would hardly call a "museum" as it doesn't have any real artifacts from the Salem Witch Trials or anything from that time period. It just has wax figures in the basement, which I will address later in this review.
The "museum" conducts tours every 1/2 hour, so if you buy a ticket early, you can either wait outside or in the gift shop. Once it is your turn for a tour, everyone is brought into an auditorium and is given a little history lession from the tour guide. Once they are done, they bring everyone down to the basement level, where there are recreated scenes of the witch hysteria using wax figures. I didn't get the name of our tour guide, but she seemed rushed when explaining some of the scenes, where she actually forgot to go over a few. She also looked like she was either bored or annoyed.
The whole tour from start to finish, including taking photos and asking questions, can take anywhere between 30-45 minutes.
In closing, I have done so many other tours during my stay in Salem that were just as informative as this one, or better, so it is really up to the tourist whether or not they want to add this place to their go-to list.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! I'm glad the tickets were only $13/each, because if they were more than that, I'd ask for a refund. The tour starts in a large room with church pews and magnified pictures with captions. That was the best part of the tour - seeing those pictures and reading the information on the trials. Once the tour started, I couldn't wait for it to end. Our tour guide clearly hated his job. He put so little effort into delivering his scripted lines that it was hard to hear at times. However, the rushed delivery of, "Moving on" from him was very clear. You're led down a set of stairs into a dark, and musty basement. They encouraged flash photography, but it was evident from the first scene, that there was nothing of value to photograph. Each scene looks like it was set up centuries ago, and the information presented is easily available online. A few of the scenes had pre-recorded scripts, which was a nice change from the drab, monotone delivery of our guide. Bottom line, this will be a waste of your time and money.

I know that Halloween is a busy time of year for this museum but the experience I had was horrible. The first tour guide was exhausted and gave a terrible and rushed context behind the witch trials. The group of around 20 people we were in was way too big for how small the exhibits were and I couldnt see half of what was in the museum. Finally, the tour guides got confused about the groups and our group had to skip half of the museum and we got the “abridged” version of the museum at full price. Overall, it seems like it could be a good museum if it were more organized but DEFINITELY do not come here in October and especially not close to Halloween.

This was a very unfortunate experience and glad that I only spent $13. 2 out of the 3 guides (they switch pretty frequently for how short the tour is) were so monotone and drab, just reciting their lines. They spoke rapidly and it was hard to understand. No interpersonal skills or interaction whatsoever. Almost immediately, I wanted to leave and by the end it felt so uncomfortable with how bad the guide was that I couldn't wait to get out. The vibe from the rest of the group seemed to be the same. The group was too large for the area and many people were crowded and still couldn't see anything. You're basically looking at mannequins in a dark basement while multiple people recite boring monologues. A positive is that they do have a bathroom and cheap post cards in the gift shop.

We did not tour the museum or the other attraction. However, we did book the candlelit ghostly walking tour. The tour was very informative and the guides (we were lucky to have multiple as we were the last group of the night) engaged well with the group. This is another self-guided museum that you can be in and out within 25 minutes or so depending on whether or not you read the descriptions of each exhibit. This museum is pretty small, and it gives a bit of history of Salem, which includes the Witch Trials. They do have a fantastic gift shop as soon as you walk in, and I was able to pick up some great souvenirs that I didn't find in other places. The staff is also friendly and helpful as well. I recommend this museum if one is not looking to spend a good amount of time here like myself. The price of admission, however, is a bit steep for the amount of exhibits a person sees.

I visited Phillips House last October with a pair of friends from out of town. I love this elegant Federal style mansion, which was built in 1821 and currently operated by Historic New England (HNE). This tour is vastly different from other historic tours in Salem because it focuses neither on the 1690s around the time of the Salem Witch Trials, nor on the early 19th century during the peak of maritime trade. What a wonderful experience! Our guide today - I feel bad that I don't remember his name - was extremely knowledgeable and quite entertaining. I was not sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a very fascinating tour. The "garage", with original carriages and antique cars, it's probably the most stunning section of the tour. And learning about the history of the house and of the families who lived there was particularly interesting. When our guide Tom told us we were in for a treat, he truly meant it. My friend and I happened to be the only ones for our tour time, so it was essentially a private tour. Tom provided a lot of interesting information on the rooms, pieces, family history, and so much more. The collection here is absolutely astounding, and one of my favorite parts was seeing the carriage house and the various modes of transportation up close. We went on a Saturday in early November. No wait to get in. It was a little busy but not crowded. An excellent experience! Great signage detailing lots of great history and explaining so much about the pioneer times. The buildings were well keep and the grounds were exactly as you'd expect for that time. There was a great presentation on herbs and plants they used for medicinal purposes. If you're interested in history and not just cute Hocus Pocus tourist crap then I highly recommend this place! If you want something "cute" and maintained to modern standards then this is NOT the place for you and your be better suited visiting a mall or theme park.

We were so sad to be here when it was raining and they were closed due to flooding. We were here in 2020 and it was closed as well. Really striking out here! That was no fault to the village! This was a must do on our list when visiting to Salem, especially being Hocus Pocus fans. Cost is very minimal ($5 each). Its very quick to go through, however if you're walking it's a bit of a walk from the main attractions of Salem but we walked there in about 35 minutes. Make the stop right before to Max and Dani's house on (4 Ocean Ave) too.

Such a cool and underrated spot! Salem Pioneer Village feels like stepping straight into the 1600s — it’s so well done and full of authentic details. I grew up in Marblehead and always loved this place. They have a great selection of food and pretty much everything is very good. It's simple diner food done right, and their baked goods are just fantastic. Bagels, muffins and cookies are all delicious. Everything is also fairly priced and has large portions. It came to us as amusing, that even at 1.15pm, lunch time, the place called the Muffin Shop was out of Muffins. Still it made up by some lovely sandwiches.
I opted for a Turkey Reuben sandwich - on wheat bread. My Sandwhich was easy to order, the only question was the choice of breads.

We attended the Cry Innocent: the People vs. Bridget Bishop trial here at the Old Town Hall.
You meet up in the street our front to "pay for" and attend the show. We waited about 15-20 mins before the pre-show beginning and it was pretty cold when we went, so pack and dress accordingly.
The show itself was very good at recreating an accurate depiction of what a real "Witch Trial" would have been like. The actors were great and everything was very well put together. The experience was very enlightening and informative. I would highly recommend seeing this show. There are interactive segments and audience participation and in the end the crowd or "Jury" vote on the verdict.

I decided to visit Salem for All Hallows Eve aka Halloween. I started by visiting several of the local favorite spots (House of the Seven Gables, etc.,). After finishing the other parts of my sightseeing tour, I finished my night at the Old Town Hall.
The Town green directly in front of it was hosting a festival. There were lots of options and assorted activities. Several food trucks and vendors were there. There were also a few kids friendly activities.
Directly to the side of the Town Hall is the Witches Museum, which was packed and sold out for the night. Street musicians played outside and a band on the central stage. Families were Trick or Treating at the local homes, and several of the houses were elaborately decorated.

I'm a Salem resident and I am on a mission to tour all the local attractions AND historical houses.
About this one:
The Pickering House is one of Salem and New England's oldest houses, built in 1660. It has a unique history as it was occupied by the same family for more than 350 years. It's possible to tour the first floor and the grounds through a guided tour run by its caretaker Vijay.
I had the please to took the tour yesterday and it was a remarkable experience. Through the history of the house and its inhabitants during the centuries, Vijay gives powerful insights also on Salem's and US history. The house's most notable inhabitant was Timothy Pickering, who had a prominent military and political role during the Revolutionary War and the beginnings of the United States.
The tour is about 1 hour and, as far as I know, it has to be booked online in advance, or at least you should check their website as tours are not given every day but on specific days and times.
You can tour three rooms: the first one to visit was part of the original 1660 structure and used back then as a kitchen; then the parlor and the sunroom. Furniture and objects are original to the house and to the Pickering family.
The Pickering House is very close to downtown Salem but not on tourist paths, so it can be a nice "finding" on a more quiet street. Its unique Gothic revival facade is great for pictures too!

Drove an hour back to Salem just to tour this home with the BEST tour guide ever, Vijay. The oldest house in Salem on the original foundation, occupied by 10 generations of the Pickering family, including Timothy Pickering who served on George Washington's cabinet. I can’t say enough about the excellent service and over-the-top hospitality at Sea Salt. We showed up unannounced with a 7 lb Chihuahua in hand after taking a a stroll through historic Marblehead on a gorgeous Friday night - and asked if we could eat on the outdoor patio. David, the manager, was super welcoming, accommodating — and active (not always the case with GM’s). He took the initiative to light an outdoor heater to keep us comfortable. At one point he ran across the street to shop at Crosby’s when they were low on an ingredient - he is a rollup your sleeves sort of leader, which may help explain why all the rest of the staff are equally engaging and wonderful. Marc was our server and was extremely charming, knowledgeable and helpful about the menu and specials that night. You can tell when people truly enjoy what they do and where they work - Marc was that guy. He is going places, as they say. We had Maple Manhattan cocktails to start (divine), Korean chicken tenders, Ahi tuna poke, and Aleppo Honey Roasted Salmon entree - and shared it all. Everything was thoughtfully prepared and tasty. The Korean chicken tenders had authentic gochujang, were just slightly dry, but still solid and plentiful for an app. The ahi dish was the star of the night - lots of chunky fresh tuna, a large crispy wonton “bed”, wonderful complementary salsa adds, and the spicy mayo was a big hit with me (wife thought it could have used a smidge less mayo and smidge more spice - but hey…); the salmon was perfectly cooked and all the flavors on the plate blended nicely together. The honey advertised on this salmon did not really come through to add some sweet, but otherwise was a well executed dish. All in all - the meal was a B+ but the professional service from every employee we saw makes this an A restaurant any day of the week. Sea Salt is a “must try” for any visitor or local Marbleheader. A big thanks to David, Marc, and the chef team at Sea Salt for making this a wonderful impromptu meal on a picture-perfect New England Fall evening. We will be back!

I had dinner at Sea Salt while in town last week. The restaurant is super casual and welcoming, though a bit dark given it is in the basement of the building. The menu was very approachable, and my starter cocktail (maple Manhattan) was perfect. I was advised to try the butternut squash and beet salad, which I found to be very sub par. The tiny pieces of butternut squash were flavorless and most were undercooked. The salad lacked a crunch factor, and it could have used some goat cheese. I then tried the crab spaghetti as I had heard it was quite tasty. It was tasty, but it was a very small portion and could have used some Calabrian chili or something with a kick to add dimension. Overall it was a good meal but had room for improvement. I’d go back perhaps during the season to try again.

Wow! We stopped in based on the reviews here and boy did they not disappoint! Starting with the host and server, the folks here are wonderful and kind. I believe we had Emily as our server this evening and she was a true gem!

This Church is absolutely gorgeous, has a ton of history, friendly people, breathtaking stain glass windows, original pews, a must see! We did the walk thru tour, its a church fundraiser, and it was 10/10. Everyone was very knowledgeable and answered every question we asked. About this one:
The Charter Street Cemetery Welcome Center is actually a very interesting example of a First-Period house, built in 1672 for mariner Samuel Pickman and only recently transformed into the Welcome Center of the adjacent graveyard. It was beautifully restored over the years and, for the architecture buffs, its structure is rich in details (windows, exposed beams, corbels etc).
When you get inside - entrance is from the back, not on the street - you can visit two rooms on the first floor, one is their gift shop and the other is a small exhibition about both the house and the cemetery.
Even though this makes a very quick visit (5/10 minutes), it's worth the visit since it's conveniently located downtown, it's free and it provides information about the cemetery. Also, the gift shop is small but you might find things here you can't find elsewhere.
They occasionally organize/host free lectures - I attended one on Puritan funeral habits and another on colonial medicinal herbs, both very enjoyable and informative.
PROs
You get the chance to see the well preserved inside of one of the only two 1600s houses in Salem which are open to the public for free (the others require tickets - the other free to the public from the 1600s is only occasionally open and not restored). It's free and picture-worthy!
CONs
No real cons here, but be aware that during tourist season, especially in October, the entire area of the cemetery, memorial etc gets VERY, VERY busy. Entrance to the welcome center might be limited or might require a reservation (check their website). On a normal day, like today, no lines, no waiting, no issues at all.

We went here today and toured the cemetery. We walked just past the witch trials memorial. The person at the gate was very helpfull. Some of the people buried were involved in the trials. I saw graves from the 1680s. Only one person who was hanged for being a witch is buried here and then o ly many years after her death I also posted a few photos of the spot where they were hung.
