The service was friendly and sufficient. It is a bit noisy, but, for Wollongong, the restaurant is in the top three, in my opinion. Look at the pictures though. The calamari looks like they came from a pub or a fish and chips joint. However, very tasty. If you are not too much of a pretentious snob, you will enjoy this restaurant.

With the prospect of Gladys picking up a big chunk of our bill we were keen to try something new and at a venue that accepts the government discount. Babyface Kitchen is located on Kiera St in the city centre. This street is fast becoming Wollongong’s answer to other big city food strips with more and more upmarket and fine dining options establishing themselves along what will one day be known as the Gong’s foodie golden mile. On the night we visited we expected to be able to explore the seven course tasting menu for $100 per person. Initially put off that the tasting menu was not available our disappointment quickly turned to happy intrigue as we were told the evening was a “super casual” wine exploration evening with an a la cart style bar menu available for food selection. Our table was a cozy bench and chair combination in a modest but very cozy dining room. Tableware is high quality with cloth napkins to complete the fine dining experience. We were immediately approached by one of the many local wine importers and sommeliers showcasing their local and imported bespoke selection of all things vino. With a small but generous splash of wine we began what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable journey through some amazing and unique wines. Wine can sometimes become a bit wanky depending on who is presenting the bottle but all the grape gurus were casual, friendly and non pretentious. We ended up buying a few of our favourites by the glass and a bottle of an amazing limited release from Japan!! Even without the food this was an amazing experience. Truth be told you could easily have not bought a drop of wine the whole evening and still had a good level of happy intoxication as the tastings were free flowing and generous. And most important there was never a hard sell, in fact, it just felt like we were having a drink with friends who wanted to share the amazing wines they had discovered. Let’s get to the food! We decided on some share plates to start and our choices arrived a short time later. The Wonboyn oysters were perfect. Freshly shucked and accompanied by the perfect amount of blood plumb vinaigrette that complimented the natural flavours of the mollusc without taking over. Spanner crab on a chickpea cracker was a refined and delicate serving of crab flesh contrasted perfectly on a crispy cracker. The coral trout was described as heaven on a plate by one of our group and it was a very fair description. Super fresh and perfectly seasoned coral trout this dish delivered in every way. Our last share plate was hands down the stand out of the evening. The Koji fried scarlet prawn was just amazing. This crunchy prawn delicacy gives way to silky roasted oyster Mayo that has been injected into the centre of the head of the prawn. The crunch and cream combination is so perfectly matched; this is a dish you simply have to try! We ordered two mains and a side to share. The mains consisted of the Mud Crab and Pastrami Short Rib. So far Babyface had nailed the seafood dishes and they continued the kick gastronomic goals with the protein based dish. The short rib was cooked to perfection with each and every piece of the pastrami almost melting in the mouth. Accompanied by a simple yellow pea mustard and some house pickled veggies this was comfort food at its best. Back to the seafood and the mud crab with buckwheat noodles was a flawless example of how fresh ingredients, cooked with skill and complimented by a brilliant sauce just make for great food. The specks of belly bacon added just the right amount of salt to this amazing dish. For our group of three we had probably consumed enough wine and food at this point to satisfy our appetite but we couldn’t leave without sampling the desert menu. We ordered the 1.Beef special pho 2. Special Vermicelli 3. Crispy skin chicken tomato rice. I tend to have a few particular dishes used as a measuring stick of how a restaurant fairs in terms of taste. For me, Vietnamese food its all about the Pho!! The Pho here was excellent with its authentic broth flavours and is right up there (Ie Bankstown's pho) in terms of quality. The beef brisket levelled this dish up as it was soft, tender and outright tasty. I can tell the chefs have alot of experience and it shows from the great tasting authentic flavours. Hats off to them. The swift and polite service from staff, the quickness of dishes coming out and the decor made it a delightful experience. The service was cordial and the wait time was short. The Satay Combo was one of the best I’ve had from throughout Australia. Packed with meat including prawns, chicken, beef and squid in ample proportions. These guys are NOT stingy with the meat and the serving size is just huge. The Special Fried Rice is a little anemic but to be fair it’s got a good balance of ‘special bits’. The presentation for a takeaway meal was pretty good too. It shows the Chef has pride in his cooking no matter if it’s served in house or in a plastic takeaway container. I generally rate a ‘Chinese’ restaurant by its standard of Satay Combination and if the rest of the menu matches this Satay then I confidently say that the rest of the menu will not disappoint. The 3rd party booking engine attached to the restaurant's website asked to select if the meal was for a special occasion with various boxes you could select. I dutifully selected Anniversary and may have mentioned 25th wedding anniversary in additional comments, I am not positive about that. Not sure why the restaurant has that option turned on as when my son and wife and I turned up to celebrate for a meal that came in just over $300 before I added a $20 tip no mention was ever made of the reason we had chosen this restaurant. I understand some fine dining restaurants prefer not to make a fuss of these things which is absolutely fine, just don't ask about it in the booking and mention it in the confirmation emails if it won't be recognised on the night. It does set up some not unrealistic expectations, (as many restaurants do act on the advice they have requested), that waitstaff may mention it on arrival or acknowledge it at dessert time. So we actually mentioned it to the waitstaff after our desserts were served to which the response was "Happy wedding anniversary" and was then mentioned again by the waitstaff as we were leaving the restaurant at the end of the meal. Enjoyed the food, generally the service and atmosphere, but was somewhat surprised they ask about special occasions and then ignore it. Forgive the google name but genuine review and booking.

This was our first time at K Malu and we didn't know what to expect, having only looked at the menu online. We were presented with menus which included both an a la carte and a two set menus. We weren't particularly taken with the set menus so instead elected to order some bread, 5 entrees, 5 mains and some side dishes and share these between us at the table. For entrees we ordered 2 baguettes, octopus, burrata cheese, 2 x polenta with crab, venison tartare and the chicken liver pate. All were excellent but the standouts were the pate, the octopus and the chilli oil with the burrata. For mains we shared some truffle risotto, duck breast, quail, market fish with pipis and the 800g rib eye steak, complemented with brussel sprouts, salad and potatoes. All of the meals were amazing in quality and a good size for the group, we probably slightly overordered but it made for a very enjoyable evening. This is an expensive, fine dining restaurant, but it was also good value for the quality of the food and ambience offered. The service was great and we really enjoyed our meal here. We arrived without a booking which for lunch is completely acceptable. We had no trouble getting a table and a very friendly waiter showed us to a table inside. The Boathouse has found it's rhythm. Had a fabulous lunch today, it was overcast and windy but we were nicely tucked inside with a table looking out to the ocean. We were lured in by the $2 oyster promotion. Ordered 1 dozen to share, they were so fresh and creamy we ordered another dozen. The small plates aren't small, they're a decent entree size. We had the buratta which came with huge slabs of foccacia, salt and pepper squid which comes with a spicy sauce. The scallops were okay. The highlight was the occy and pork belly skewers. I was expecting them to be small skewers but they were the full size, loved the Herb sauce it was marinated in. The servers were really friendly. With everything we ordered plus drinks it was under $90 per person. Quite busy for a Monday lunch, looks like word is out it has improved.

While we were there we saw so many well portioned dishes being served out, one in particular that caught my eye was the All day Breakfast Pie, which I look forward to trying in the future. A nice welcome and pleasant service all round, we were the second pair of dinners to arrive. We went for the $89 banquet each along with 6 oysters, it was good value and by the end we were certainly full. The best dishes were tuna sashimi and the grilled prawns, the Yusuka Margaritas were good as well. An overall comment would be there was too much use of miso, it became rather cloying towards the end and it actually ruined what would have been a great Basque Cheesecake with its Miso Butterscotch sauce. The Mb9 Wagyu steak, they didn’t know which cut of beef it was, was nice but again the over use of dark miso made the meat too salty. With good grade Wagyu less is more when it comes to sauces and marinades. The furiake fries were nice, but again the salt was overpowering, and the white cabbage coleslaw was plentiful but really more of a filler than a genuine dish accompaniment. We would go again and maybe try some other of the options.
