This did nothing for the dish apart from confuse the taste buds. No one came back to our table to check how our meals were until we were nearly done. As we were only in Whitianga for a night we didn't get to explore the hotel, though it looked like it was buzzing with activity. We found a table out the front and ordered the fruit salad, bacon & egg pie (with side salad which was yummy), and two sweet muffins. Milkshake and coffee were the beverages of choice. Main gripe about this place was that the service tended to be pretty slow. It took about an hour for our mains to come after ordering, maybe 20 min for the entrees. They also forgot a drink. The food I tried was all of pretty good quality, though! Out of the 3 dishes in our group that I tried, the prawns (shrimp for us Americans) were great. Tender, juicy, and flavorsome. These appeared in the poached prawn entree, prawn pasta, and pork belly + prawns. We also tried the mussels entree that came with 2 slices of foccacia in a tomatoey broth. The broth was great but the choice of focaccia instead of something like sourdough may have been a slight mistake. The mussels were a bit overcooked but not rubbery. They didn't seem frozen. I had the pork belly and prawns main, which featured three nice chunks of pork belly. We had a very pleasant and great experience. Food was great and covered off all our requirements which included a Vegan. The atmosphere is very welcoming and The Hive is very kid friendly, heaps of outside tables and plenty of inside seating also. It was very busy at the time we were there but the staff handled it well, we all got feed and watered. We started with the Salt and Pepper Squid followed by a Sea Dawg Pizza and loved it. It’s a Saturday evening. Range of beers, wines, and spirits was good, and reasonably priced (cheaper than I thought they would be actually). Dinner was roast beef, ham, and chicken, with a nice variety of roast veggies plus gravy, plus desserts and well priced, and nicely laid out. This was our 1st visit to the club, as we were there with a group of friends as part of the Waikato Mustang Club. The Mercury Bay club has various social amenities and activities however, we were just there for the meal at this time. I would definitely come back again, and either with family or friends, or even for a evening for 2. This place deserved 5 Stars.
