We had our anniversay dinner at Shelter Restaurant in Tofino, right on the water with excellent food and service. There are numerous tour companies out of Tofino for whale watching, rain forrest hiking, trips to natural hot springs, kayaking and many hikes that are very clearly marked that you can take yourself. We did all those activities and each one was great. Shout out to Paddle West Kayaking and Aquatic Safaris for whale watching and a trip to natural hot springs We would highly recommend Pacific Sands Resort and Tofino itself as a great destination!

When the food arrived, the server plunked down the tray without telling us what was on the platter. Considering we could have 10 possible meat options this was a bit odd. When prompted the server pointed out the different types of meat, and a pool of sour cream on the platter that was definitely not dairy free. The meats were cold and the fat was beginning to cloy. The bbq sauce was very sugary, all tomato and no depth. The beans overly sweet and the coleslaw way too much vinegar. We had the brisket, pulled pork, and smoked turkey. The turkey was dry and the slices were too thick. It was disappointing all around. When I was paying the bill, the server took away my cutlery that I was using to put the leftovers into a take away bin, it was very awkward. Once we were sat down at the dinner we were told that the wine we had at the tasting event was our wine drink included in the dinner booking. Disappointing as we did not care for the wine. Tonight we are back for the crab night. The food will be amazing again I am sure. The same wine tasting event takes place before the dinner. We will not participate and lose our choice at dinner. It was definitely mucky and a bit technical with a 3 yr old who sometimes needed to be lifted over obstacles. The 3 year old did, however, manage to walk the whole trail on her own! It would have been tricky to attempt to carry her, even with a proper hiking child carrier, due to the climbing, ducking, mud pit avoidance, balancing on logs etc required to complete the trail. We did the trail relatively unprepared with just our running shoes. If you wanted to be better prepared, consider hiking boots, hiking poles, gaitors and/or splash/rain pants to help keep your shoes/clothes from getting so muddy. In addition to the lovely old growth cedars, we also were lucky to see starfish clinging to the rocks by the boat dock at the end of our hike—such an exciting bonus for us as we don’t live near an ocean. My wife and I were on holidays in Tofino BC on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island when we came across an art gallery in town. The gallery is called the Tofino Gallery of Contemporary Art and so many aspects of this business impressed us from the moment we walked in. First off the owner Leah McDermid chose a somewhat hidden space at the back of a building facing a lane instead of a an expensive space on “the front row” of the main street in the town of Tofino. Leahs choice to open her gallery away from the hustle and bustle of the main street in town showed us the confidence she has in her artists, their work, her experience and keen eye. There’s an amazing collection of BC painters and sculptures whose friendships Leah has cultivated over many years and their work simply speaks for itself. My wife and I chose two fun , colourful large paintings by Lucy Schappy which we have in our living room in Victoria. We feel so lucky to have been there to meet Leah and Bruce and due to the size of the paintings they were also kind enough to offer to bring them to our home and help choose the perfect space for them. We look forward to our next visit to Tofino and Leahs Gallery next August and while we can follow the work that Leah acquires on her website , theres quite nothing like seeing all the amazing originals in her gallery. I’m not one to buy art when browsing galleries on vacation but when I saw the multi-dimensional piece by Richelle Osborne hanging by the doorway I knew I was sold. Leah confirmed that it was no problem shipping the piece to Florida. She personally handled the shipping details. It arrived a few weeks later beautifully wrapped in a protective shell in perfect condition. 5 stars.
