Cathedral
Dome
Place of worship
Nidaros Cathedral, located in Trondheim, is a remarkable Gothic structure dating back to the 11th century. It is one of Scandinavia's largest medieval buildings and holds great historical and religious significance. The cathedral houses the grave of Viking king St. Olav, who played a key role in introducing Christianity to Norway. Visitors can admire modern stained-glass works and intricate statues on the facade depicting biblical characters and Norwegian monarchs.
Extraordinary cathedral, the second largest but in my opinion the most beautiful in Scandinavia. There is a crypt below parts of the cathedral, constructed during the second half of the 19th century, where you can admire gravestones from the middle ages. You pay an entrance fee in the neighboring tourist office and should come early when they open to avoid the busloads of visitors that arrive around 10 a.m.

Jewel of Trondheim. What a magnificent piece of architecture, blending and extending back to medieval era. Proudly standing after many renovations and total reformed as well. Must and first place of visit in Trondheim. I was lucky enough to sit and witness the aura of this marvel as being attendee as audience of a singing group. Summer is the best time to visit in my opinion as lot of activities taking place during. Guided tours are available. Wonderful coffee shop situated right next to it with lot of indoor and outdoor seating.
Sameera R — Google review
What an amazing cathedral! The guided tour was excellent. We had the treat of a free organ performance, so got to experience the fantastic acoustics. So many rich details and stories of all the architectural features. So much eye candy. The entire cathedral is like a book that could be studied for hours, days, months, and years. I loved the story of St Olav, the Eternal King, the stone mason (one of the photos locates the stone mason), the carvings by Vigeland (he also did some of the exterior gargoyles), the meaning behind each and every one of the works of art. Take a photo and then Google the image and see if you can learn a story about it. Buy the combo ticket so you can visit the crown jewels and the archbishop museum as well. The food in the cafe is quite good as well.
Elise M — Google review
I've seen many famous cathedrals, while the exterior looks historical, there's not much anything that's special in the interior. Paying for the entrance fee for me was a waste of money. Stick to the photo op outside.
Blue T — Google review
This is one of the oldest places in Trondheim. Architecture is magnificent whe the exterior gives an ancient historical feeling. Some parts of the outside have been standing there since almost a millennium.
Konstantinos K — Google review
Absolutely PHENOMENAL!!!! So majestic! I came to visit for 3 days in a row! Each day, I discovered new things!!! Only wish I had the time to make the pilgrimage walk from 10 miles out to earn my St. Olav Pilgrimage certificate. The carvings, stained glass, history, and incredible music (I was blessed to hear one of the organists practicing) were all magnificent!!! So many amazing details that need more time to explore and savor! Would love to visit again sometime soon!!! What a tremendous treasure!!!! Definitely a must see if traveling to Norway!!!!!
Rhonda C — Google review
Amazing architecture worthy of a visit even for those not on a pilgrimage. Historic pieces and artefacts are incredible, particularly the preserved tombstones on display in the cathedral's crypt - located down an inconspicuous staircase on the southern side.
Andrew N — Google review
A ticketed cathedral - buy your tickets at the visitor centre next door. Beautiful building outside and in. Scandinavia’ biggest gothic building - it’s vast. The guides on duty are willing to answer questions and seemed to know their stuff. Inside there are lots of nooks and crannies to explore, with a history dating back over a thousand years. ♿️Not easy to access. An incredibly heavy door to open and no help. And inside much is on one level but all the nooks crannies, chapels and crypts are pretty difficult to access. Having said all that, it did feel more like a historical showpiece and tourist attraction than a living worshipping cathedral with very little evidence of services or help for those who wanted prayer or support.

Fortress
Museums
Perched on a hill above the Nidelven River, Kristiansten Fortress was constructed in the 1680s following a devastating city fire. Its strategic location protected Trondheim from easterly attacks and famously repelled Swedish forces in the early 18th century. The fortress also holds historical significance as a site of wartime executions during World War II. Visitors can explore its museum, guided tours, and seasonal cafe while enjoying panoramic views of the city and fjord from this iconic landmark.
The fortress was free to enter. It was a slightly rainy day so not a lot of people around. It was part of a tour we were on so it was nice to have a guide to explain the history. I would suggest reading a bit about it before seeing it as I did not see a lot of explanation signs up there. The views are also great.
Caryn I — Google review
Beautiful and historic place. Free entrance in the fort walls. You can be your own guide as there are QR codes scattered around the place that’ll open videos explaining more about the place. You have a beautiful viewpoint of the city and the fjord.
JasonTT — Google review
I visited a hot morning in mid July of 2025. The place was empty with the exception of a busload of Italian tourists with their guide. Everything was closed, including the cute little café and renovation work was going on in parts of the area. There i a beautiful view over the city of Trondheim and the fjord from the concrete walls downhill from the fortress. Parking is free for an hour which is largely enough time for the visit.
Sebastian R — Google review
The views from the fortress are pretty spectacular. There are picnic tables, so you could bring a picnic lunch or snack and enjoy a picnic. The museum is free. They sell a limited amount of snacks and they do not accept credit cards - only cash or VIPs - which is the mobile wallet for Norway. The display in the museum is not that much. We hiked up the hill to the fortress on a very hot day. The cafe did not have cold water, but we were allowed to take a couple of the cups used for coffee and fill them from the taps in the bathrooms.
Elise M — Google review
It's worth walking up the hill to the fortress for the view of trondheim you get there. There's also a small cafe and lots of outdoor sitting spaces in the park.

Museums
Nestled along the picturesque Brattorkaia in Trondheim, Rockheim stands as a vibrant tribute to Norwegian popular music. This modern museum, ingeniously converted from an early 1900s barn, showcases the rich tapestry of Norway's musical journey from the 1950s to today. Visitors can immerse themselves in The Time Tunnel, a sprawling exhibition that spans over 1320 square meters and highlights key moments in Norwegian music history.
Absolutely fantastic audio visual experience. A superb showcase of Norwegian modern and contemporary musicians as well as tracing the development of modern music in Norway. Several Norwegian bands from the world stage as well as excellent content of Norwegian artists generally. Loved it. Virtually all the exhibits are in both Norwegian and English.
Dex M — Google review
Well designed museum with interactive exhibitions about the Norwegian Music Culture. You can even create your own music in a “lab”, here more explanations how to use the Synthesizer would be important. Overall 100% worth to visite, free lockers are available, plan min. 2 hrs.
Kristof S — Google review
The highlights are at 6th and 4th floor. You can go thru the history of Norwegian Music from 50's to millenium era. There are also some unique genres here in the museum.
Pornpong C — Google review
Intersting museum about Norwegian music. But for a metalhead on holiday in Norway, the real gift is a section about black metal. And this time a second gift: a temporary exhibition about origin of this subgenre. Generally speaking the museum has many interactive stations to access the material you're interested in. The workshop area is beautiful, you can create your own track by mixing instruments with stations that make everything easy. 1 or 2 hours well spent
Fabri D — Google review
Wonderful interactive experience. I enjoyed my 2 hours there but definitely need more to play with every exhibit.

Great place to learn about Norwegian music changing over the time!
Animesh S — Google review
An excellent museum full of interactive exhibits and various ways to engage and learn about Norwegian music. The English speaking tour was also worth doing at 11am - A 45min quick overview of music from the 50s to the present. There is also an opportunity to mix your own song as well and access it online. Aside from the ground floor ticket office and shop, the majority of the exhibit and cafe are located higher up in the building. Pretty much all the information was available in English and the museum was accessible and friendly. No queueing on a Sunday morning and plenty of space to explore. Very close to the cruise port, so a recommendation for those with a day in the city and no set excursions. Just be aware that it is easy to get lost in all the music and spend the whole day here. I really wish we had more interactive museums like this back in the UK... Would certainly make learning far more engaging!!

Island
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Munkholmen, a small islet off Trondheim, has a rich history as the site of Norway's first monastery in the 11th century. Over time, it served as a prison, military fortress during WWII, and execution site during the Viking ages. Today, visitors can access the island via regular boats from May to September. It's a popular spot for picnics and sunbathing.
One of the must see attractions in Trondheim! Is it worth to go for short guided tour (50NOK), really interesting. Nice beach with some sand, is it possible to swim there where temperature is higher. Lot of people can go there with kayaks, boats or bigger boat from Trondheim (95NOK). Perfect place to go there during the week, when there is less people, you can calm down and rest well.
Krzysztof C — Google review
Had to go for a 12 minute boat ride from the city to this island. Though there wasn’t so much to see, I liked it because it has finer sand than Korsvika beach. Nice for quick detour 😊
Grace — Google review
While the site itself is fascinating with great views, the service was overall mediocre to outright infuriating. The cafe did not offer milk with coffee, not everyone likes a bitter black cuppa. And for lunch we ordered a soup with refill, but then there was no refill available. This was substituted with a waffle, but a waffle is not soup, which is what i paid for. The tour was in Norwegian, with no English even though there were a fair amount of foreigners in the group. This would have been okay if we looked at the sites while the guide spoke, but instead he sat in a seat and then told us to go off and fund the things he spoke of 30 minutes later. But the thing that dissapointed me most was when the ferry back to the main land did not arrive at 3.15pm as scheduled, but rather 4.15pm, with no communication from anyone. We could have enjoyed the island a bit more, but instead all stood in the sun waiting anxiously while other events we paid for in the city were passing us by. I tried calling the ferry several times and messaged on FB, but never received any response.

Disappointing. After taking the 10 minute ride in an air polluting old boat we arrived at the island only to find the main building locked and told we could only enter if we purchased the guided tour. We did not do this on principle. It took 5 minutes to walk around the perimeter of the island and we read the history online while waiting for the next boat back.
Dyan — Google review
A really interesting site with hundreds of years of Norwegian and WWII history. It was fairly inexpensive (about $20 USD) for the boat ride to the island and the guided tour. There is a small craft/gift shop on site. There is also a small Cafe that serves food as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. This site is only open for a few months in the summer so make sure you check the schedule before heading to the tour boat.

Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum is a remarkable open-air cultural heritage site that invites visitors to step back in time. Situated near the historic ruins of Sverresborg Castle, this museum showcases over 80 buildings, some dating as far back as the 12th century. Established in 1909 by passionate individuals dedicated to preserving Norwegian and Sami culture, it features an impressive collection of traditional wooden houses from Trondheim and its surroundings.
Awesome view from the cliff, a look into life in Norway in the early 18th century, the telephone, dentist, posts, school, house of the richest person

I wanted to spend the whole day here. There's so much to see, the atmosphere is lovely, calm and cozy and the people are so kind. There's good cappucino in the cafe and toilets spread around the park. In June it's not busy at all. Great for people who are easily overstimulated and/or hsp's. I'd revisit when I'd be back in Trondheim.

10/10. You get a second day for free which I used too and the guided tours were awesome. My favourite book series is The legend of the Ice people and this trip to the past will help me so much imagining all the aspects of the books while reading them. :)

An enriching experience in a great location. The open-air museum is wonderfully organized, the old houses are filled with period furniture and accessories, allowing a rare glimpse into life "in the past." From the top of the park there are wonderful views of the city and its surroundings. Don't miss the souvenir shop on site, there are wonderful glass works, made locally.

Great open air museum, beautiful buildings full of history. Loved the town, and especially the apothecary and the apartment above it. The stavekirke was not as spectacular as others around Norway, but still worth a visit. Recommended.

One of our best cultural experiences in Norway! The place itself is amazing, what made it even better were the lovely tour guides. We want to shout out specifically André and Haakon, who very enthusiastically shared their knowledge about the old city and the castle and answered all of our curious questions. It was so cool seeing people who are as fond of history as them. If you guys see this, thanks for the notes in our travel diary! We loved them :D

Interesting collection and guided tours. Good value for money (kids and parking for free). Outside the 'old town' many buildings cannot be entered and sometimes it is hard to understand if you do not master Norwegian. All in all, this is a nice place for families, also tourists.

Norwegian restaurant
Fagn is a renowned restaurant in Trondheim, known for its outstanding wine selection and exceptional dining experience. The establishment consists of a fine-dining restaurant on the first floor and a more relaxed bistro and cocktail bar on the second floor. Fagn received its first Michelin star in 2019, making it one of the two restaurants in Trondheim to achieve this prestigious recognition that year.
Creative and delicious food. The juice pairings are spot on. If I insist on finding a flaw, it is that I had to pour my own water. For a Michelin starred fine dining restaurant, I would not have expected that. Otherwise, it was perfect
Jessica R — Google review
The food was very good, but the "premium" wine was NOT premium quality, and each pour was no more than 3 ounces at most. The cost for 4 small glasses of wine was $183 USD, but I looked up the pricing for each of the wines I was served, and none were more than a $30 USD per bottle.
Cheryl H — Google review
It's my first visit to Michelin restaurant and it was great. From the first until last minute everything is well-prepared and feels comfortable: service, attention to details, stuff. Service itself is not visible: they come, serve the food, provide details and open to answer any questions. I asked a lot, and got all answers. Very polite, calm and professional. Food itself - something that is hard to find in the city, I don't know even if it's possible. A lot of fish dishes, I believe it's mostly in honor of Norwegian history and easy fish availability. Only one dish was with meat and that duck, save God your soul, was amazing, serving was like a piece of meet looks like an island in the forest surrounded by sea and rocks. Very impressive. I would definitely recommend if you can go there and experience Michelin level of restaurant.
Andrii — Google review
We had a three course dinner - a starter, main course and dessert. The quality of the food was awesome except for the salty potatoes in the main course. My wife loved the non-vegetarian items. But, the vegetarian main course was a huge disappointment. Instead of the duck breast, they gave one cut carrot. If you are a vegetarian, it is not worth the money.
Abin K — Google review
Fantastic kitchen with Scandinavian touch On its way to a two star Michelin rating Very friendly professional staff Many dishes were also served by the chefs Truly impressed by some signature dishes Rendeer heart ice cream (my summary of the dish) and a potato dish having the feel and touch of tagliatelle Very nice wine pairing We went on a Wednesday : offering a menu prepared by bistro and the signature restaurant Very impressed Strongky recommended
Wim R — Google review
The most delicious food I had during my trip in Norway. Very creative with lots of textures and taste. The desert ice cream made of local herbs was stunning. The wine pairing was worth it, with large variety (Riesling from Germany, Arbois from France, Albarino from Spain, Chianti from italy, and a nice fortified wine for finishing). The place is comfy and cute, maybe a little noisy to hear all advices from staff but the service is very good. Will definitely come back.
Clement C — Google review
Easily the greatest food experience I've ever had. The servers were accommodating, knowledgeable, passionate, and extremely kind, and the food was obviously incredible. Innovative and complex, but still highlighting natural flavours and utilising simple ingredients in a way that made each dish an absolute masterpiece. Of all the starred restaurants in Trondheim, this is undoubtedly the only one I will come back to.
Sharon — Google review
We really wanted to love this place but found every dish much too salty. We ate at the bistro and had the 5-course menu. The over-salted food was such a shame, because the ingredients themselves were all otherwise really fresh. Good service and nice atmosphere. Would have been 5* if not for the salt

Fine dining restaurant
Speilsalen is a renowned restaurant located in Trondheim's Britannia Hotel, which reopened after a three-year renovation. The dining venue is known for its refined menu and carefully curated wine list, offering a highly choreographed experience with tuxedoed servers and meticulously plated dishes. The grand dining room features lavish furniture, beautiful chandeliers, and large mirrors adorning the walls. Helmed by chef Christopher Davidsen, the restaurant has gained recognition for its high-quality cuisine and luxurious elegance.
From the moment we stepped into Speilsalen, we knew we were in for something special, Nothing could have prepared us for the culinary journey that followed. Over the course of three and a half hours, we were completely immersed in a dining experience so extraordinary that time seemed to vanish. The food was nothing short of phenomenal each dish a work of art, meticulously crafted and flawlessly executed. Every course told a story, building in flavor and complexity, showcasing the incredible talent and vision behind the kitchen. The balance of innovation and ingredients was masterful. We found ourselves in awe at how each bite could surprise and delight so consistently. But what truly elevated the evening was the service absolute perfection. The staff struck the ideal balance between warm hospitality and refined professionalism. Every interaction felt personal, yet seamless, and they guided us through the experience with grace, humor, and deep knowledge. From the sommelier’s exquisite pairings to the precision of the pacing, it was clear that every detail was curated with care. This wasn’t just a meal it was a celebration of craftsmanship, passion, and elegance. Speilsalen is a place that redefines what fine dining can be. If you’re in Trondheim and looking for something unforgettable, Speilsalen is not just recommended it’s essential.

World class Michelin star restaurant. Service, food, and atmosphere is excellent. The wine menu holds a high French standard and they apply the golden wine menu rule: If the wine you’re suggesting is sold out, they offer you a more expensive wine for the same price.

This place delivers on all key parameters: food, service, glamour and price tag compared to other places in the world. We joined in a culinary lunch experience with a movie at the local movie theater, guided tour back to the restaurant, and a great champagne lunch. Absolutely great. Recommended!

5 stars, easily. You pay for what you get, and get you will. It's quite expensive, as is to be expected from a Michelin star restaurant. But it's worth it if you can afford it. The whole experience is just incredible. The service, the food, the ambiance. Everything. And unless you're an extremely rich person who always eats at Michelin restaurants, you will be extremely impressed by the presentation too. Just look at the attached picture! I could write an essay about my experience, but you you just have to go and get your own. 10/10, would eat again. If I could afford it, I would eat at Speilsalen several times a year.

Really just cannot say enough about this restaurant and hotel. We came all the way from Texas for a Norwegian Christmas holiday with Speilsalen on our list. Unfortunately it was booked up but a last minute cancellation allowed us to take part in this. Not only was the food delicious but ever member of the staff was kind, courteous, but also personable. They even made up a list of the food and wine pairings that we had as a keepsake. I cannot recommend this experience any higher. Amazing. Should have 20 stars. Thank you for this once in a lifetime memory.

This was not just the best meal we had in Trondheim, nor was it just the best meal we had in Norway, this experience reminded us of the joy an amazing meal can bring. Food prepared with such care and creativity that you don't know when again in your life you will be fortunate enough to taste it. We've eaten at so many places from food stalls to Michelin restaurants and I can't remember the last time I felt so satisfied and surprised by a dish. Everything we ordered was so fresh, with each element of the dish working so well together. The beef required no knife and melted in your mouth. The herring (after eating so much herring in Norway) was somehow so delicious and unique in its flavor. The lamb dumplings in such a delicious broth. After the meal we enjoyed the fresh baked desserts. The basque cheesecake was perfect without being overly sweet. It was perfect. When the meal was finished the joy turned to a bittersweet melancholy as we knew the only way to eat this food again would be to return to Trondheim. It is my wish to eat those dishes again soon. What a wonderful collection of people who create the food and warm atmosphere of this restaurant.

Probably the best cafe I've visited that consistently delivers at every level over time. They have a small food menu with very high quality items that often use local produce to create exciting flavour profiles. The coffee here is by far the best I've had anywhere, with a great selection of small pastries and cakes to go with it. Now that they've finally stopped using that horrible knife cutlery I that I've complained about in the past, there is not much to nitpick about anymore. The service is always very good here as well. Keep up the good work!

I took away a Basque cheesecake. It was delicious for a reasonable price. The cafe has an interesting ambience, but the tables are tightly spaced apart. It was busy on Thursday at lunch time. They use local ingredients. One of their advantages is a supply of freshly baked goods from the bakery across the library.

To the ones who appreciate specialty coffee, excellent food and a bit of literature & architecture: this place is for you. Restaurant
Bula Neobistro, located in Trondheim, is a stylish and eclectic dining establishment run by renowned chef Renee Fagerho. The restaurant offers a unique dining experience with surprise five- or ten-course menus that keep guests guessing until they arrive.
They made for us one of the best vegan meals we've ever had (10 courses too!) despite not being a vegan restaurant. Best restaurant in Trondheim in my opinion. Only thing I would say is the non-alcoholic pairing with 10 courses is a lot of sugar from all the juice -- more than we could handle in one sitting, and the jelly shot at the end was too acidic. But that's nitpicking a pretty perfect meal otherwise :)
Christian P — Google review
Chef Renee is well known in the Trondheim culinary scene as a visionary who’s not afraid to experiment with new ideas. I had the 5-course menu, which came with a few delightful extras by default: fresh bread, a pre-appetizer, and an after-dessert. The menu featured both meat and fish dishes, paired with vegetables. The flavors were unique and clearly crafted with skill—definitely not something you could easily recreate at home. I especially enjoyed the main courses with fish and meat. That said, 3 out of the 5 dishes were a bit too sour for my taste. I’m not sure if that was intentional or a one-off, which is why I’m not giving a perfect rating for the food. Service was great—friendly and attentive staff who introduced each dish and were happy to answer questions. Overall, I’d recommend a visit and would consider coming back to try the 10-course menu. The menu changes often.

We went to Bula to celebrate our engagement. In advance, communication was great and we were given seats at the chefs table. From beginning to end the service was exceptional and it really felt like the staff was celebrating with us. The 5 course menu was a treat for the senses with interesting flavors, textures and presentation. Although seriously operating gastronomy at a high level, the ambience and interaction made it fun and approachable.

The entrecôte was very tasty, cooked to perfection. The wine selection was impressive, and the sommelier was knowledgeable, providing recommendations that perfectly matched my dish and price range preferences. The combination of great food, attentive service, and excellent wine made for a memorable evening. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a fantastic dinner!

Mussels were great. Plum and juicy and finally a different take on this classic dish.

This is an excellent place, both food and wine of top notch quality. Can warmly recommend it! It does not stand back compared with excellent bistro restaurants in oslo (or in Paris for that sake), but also with sort of a nordic twist to it. Great value for money, large portions and high quality.

Fantastic place! The food was amazing. Although the price level is one of the higher ones, it reflects in the quality and authentic experience of the food. They have offer a concept you don't find many other places in Trondheim.

We had a dinner at Le Bistro, booking in advance through their system, easy. We ordered duck and fish for the main course. They were delicious! I had HIMMELSTUND EPLECIDER for my drink and trust me it was good! For the dessert we had chocolate fondant, even it was possible to replace a raspberry sorbet with a vannila ice :) Good service, generous portion so it was worth with the price we payed. Cozy place.

Super nice bistro in town and extreme friendly staff. We just had drinks before we heading to another restaurant for dinner. Well, the atmosphere is warm and lovely. If I were living in Trondheim, I will be visiting this bistro every night after work.
