Buddhist temple

Gōtokuji Temple, located in Tokyo, is a historic Buddhist temple famous for its association with the maneki-neko, or lucky beckoning cat statues. Legend has it that the temple is the birthplace of the maneki-neko, with stories dating back to the early 17th century when a feudal lord was saved by a cat during a thunderstorm and later built the temple to honor it.
Gotokuji Temple is a tranquil and beautiful place in a quiet part of Tokyo. It is well renowned for its many lucky cat (maneki-neko) statues, which provide for a one-of-a-kind and photogenic experience. The temple grounds are peaceful, clean, and not too crowded, so they are a great place to get away from the city. You can go there quickly by rail, and it has a terrific blend of history, culture, and a little bit of fun. If you love cats, take pictures, or just want to see a quieter, less well-known part of Tokyo, you should go here.

Gotokuji Temple about 40 mins away from Tokyo city center and is a tranquil and beautiful place. Well renowned for its many lucky cat (manekineko) statues placed by many visitors and worshippers to grant their wishes. The cats provide an photogenic experience for visitors, but do be careful not to knock them onto the ground and break others wishes. The temple closes for an hour from 12 noon to 1 pm, so grab a lunch during this period. If you are interested in buying a manekineko figurine, ensure you turn up early or face limited choice as most will be sold out.

Gotokuji Temple is a peaceful and beautiful place, best known as the birthplace of the famous “lucky cat” (Maneki-neko). The temple grounds are calm and filled with thousands of white cat statues, each symbolizing good fortune and wishes. It’s less crowded than other Tokyo attractions, which makes it perfect for a quiet walk, photos, and a moment of reflection. A truly charming spot that combines history, culture, and a bit of magic.

✨ If you’re a cat lover, Gōtoku-ji Temple (豪徳寺) in Setagaya is an absolute must-visit! 🐾 Known as the legendary birthplace of the Maneki-neko (beckoning cat), this peaceful temple sits a little outside central Tokyo — but the trip is totally worth it. 🌿 You’ll find rows and rows of adorable cat statues lined up side by side 🐱🐱🐱, creating a magical scene that’s perfect for photos and memories. 📸✨ You can also buy your own lucky cat charm to take home for good fortune. 🍀 A calm atmosphere, beautiful traditional architecture, and cats everywhere — it’s the perfect hidden gem for anyone who loves history and cuteness combined. 💗🏯🐾

This temple is a hidden gem, so peaceful and quiet. The view is amazing and so many Lucky Cats. The place is remote and a long walk from Gotokuji station, You can buy a Lucky cat and select what size you want, then offer your wishes there, it is said that after your wish comes true, you go back to that place and return the Lucky Cat so that Neku-chan can be there with others. many Tourist and locals, have to wait long line to buy a Luky Cat, you can pay for cash or credit card.

Lucky Cat is so famous. Almost everyone has their own or has seen them before. I've been told that Gotokuji Temple is where the Lucky Cat originated. The minute I walk into the temple. I saw hundreds, if not thousands, of Lucky Cats all over the temple: some big and some small. Hundreds of people who loved Lucky Cats are checking out the Lucky Cats here as well. They have a long line for visitors who want to bring home a Lucky Cat; visitors can purchase one there. I can only buy a smaller Lucky Cat because the bigger one is sold out. But I'm happy I can get one. People behind me are no longer getting the Lucky Cat. They are completely sold out of all sizes of the Lucky Cat after mine.

The most beautiful temple we visited in Japan We visited Gotokuji Temple, the famous “cat temple,” in late autumn and it instantly became our favourite temple site of the entire trip. The grounds were stunning — maple trees blazing in red, orange, and gold, leaves drifting down through the wooden gates. I even captured a perfect photo of a single maple leaf suspended mid-air in front of the entrance, which sums up just how magical the atmosphere here feels. The train ride out was absolutely worth it — smooth, easy, and a nice escape from the busier parts of Tokyo. Once you arrive, the temple is peaceful, beautifully maintained, and full of small details you notice only when you slow down. And of course, the maneki-neko figurines are a delight to see in person — shelves of lucky cats clustered together, quietly watching over everything. If you’re in Tokyo, especially in autumn, don’t skip Gotokuji. It’s unforgettable, photogenic from every angle, and one of the most rewarding temple visits we’ve ever had.

Great temple to visit if you like cats. The area with the cat statues is quite small, and can be hard to take a decent picture of the statues without someone having a whole photoshoot in front of the tiny area. The incense holder was pretty interesting, they provide the incense and lighters to place the lit incense inside of the sculpture. There’s also a cat train you can take to the temple, which is adorned with cat themed hand straps.

Setagaya Park is a recreational green space in the Setagaya neighborhood, known for its sports courts, fountain, play area, and mini-train ride for kids. The park also hosts the Setagaya Park Flea Market at least once a month, featuring around 150 vendors selling clothes, accessories, and jewelry. Located approximately 15 minutes from Sangenjaya, the park offers a sophisticated yet wild atmosphere.
An absolutely wonderful park for people of all ages. This special place feels like something from another world. There’s a lot for the kids to play on, and a great spot for picnics!

Really quaint part of the big city. Love the maneki nekos. Quiet environment and lovely people at the temple.

Always such a good time at the park! It's super clean and has so many places to sit and read. Highly recommend on a good weather day.
Hunter S — Google review
Nice park with plenty of greens and facilities for children. There is a small “traffic part” with mini roads, cross walks and traffics light for kids to learn traffic rules. Mini station and train at north part of the park is also very cute. There is a small swimming pool according to the map, I didn’t go there though. Over all a very family oriented park.
Uhaan — Google review
Everyday I went there it’s a beautiful park with a fountain, pool, minature train to ride and play areas for children. It's kept clean by a team of local volunteers and is extremely safe for families. I went in November when the weather was great then the park was beautiful.

This is not close to any station. It's almost in middle of sangenjaya and ikejri ohashi station. But the park is pretty big and has many things to do including kids train, a fountain at centre with playground around it. A small hiking Hill. Etc. Many things to do for kids in a kids area which allows for burning fire cutting, wood, etc. to get hands-on experience for the kids. A must go if you're around and have kids. But even otherwise, it's a good place to hang out.

A beautiful park with a fountain, pool, minature train to ride and play areas for children. It's kept clean by a team of local volunteers and is extremely safe for families. We went in October when the weather wasn't great but even then the park was beautiful. I'd recommend trying to go in summer with children so that they can play in the pool.

The park also offers scenic walking paths that showcase beautiful nature throughout the seasons, providing a relaxing atmosphere. With cafes and restaurants on-site, it’s convenient for taking breaks or enjoying a light meal.

This place has a walking, jogging and bicycling track around the entire facility with distance markers. I'm not sure how long it is, but it feels like it's at least 2 miles. There were a lot of runners on Sunday when I visited. It's an ideal place to jog without having to worry about car traffic, and the pesky lawless bicycle riders, for the most part.
Leonard L — Google review
Very big park to take your family here to: pinic/ bicycle/ run/ skate/ gym. Sometimes there are flea markets as well. It’s so big that there are several smaller parks inside for kids to play like Pig park, squirrels park… You can spend almost a day here with different activities.

a very comfortable place to exercise in the afternoon. very spacious and lush garden. Even though it is a bit far from Komazawa Daigaku Station, the journey to get there is very pleasant because it passes through a road that is not too busy. A very suitable if you invite the family to exercise here. If you have pets, you are allowed to come here.
Mabda N — Google review
Big park, lots of facilities. Awesome running/cycling loop ~2.2km long. Baseball field, stadium/gym, basketball hoops, children playground, skating and kids cycling tracks, food and drink stand, and more. Always full of people day and night, especially weekends, but there is plenty of space to sit and exercise, so it never feels crammed.

In this park, there is a basketball ring under the East footbridge, near the Okaidan Kita hiroya.

This park is quite big with a few permanent shops to grab some food to eat at either those shops’ tables or at one of the park’s open areas. Don’t expect the quality to be good though. There are sometimes food trucks that are in the area as well. Lots of people run, bike, or even use the skate park! There’s a lot of open space as well for any other form of exercise that won’t bother other people. We saw some youngsters practicing parkour too!

A lovely little hidden gem of an izakaya! The menu was varied and very tempting, the portions were great and the price was very reasonable. Service was attentive and friendly, and the place had a very welcoming and cozy atmosphere. I went there with vegetarians and they had a wide choice of options to choose from. The drinks menu was similarly huge and catered for a huge variety of tastes. Definitely recommended!

The serene ambiance sets it apart from the bustling city with its spacious indoors adorned with antique furniture and a warm decor, as well as an expansive outdoor terrace surrounded by Japanese zelkova trees. This place has great food and a fantastic atmosphere. The pork loin and swordfish were delicious. The soup of the day was a tomato cream with a nice zest. I also ordered a breakfast power shake to get my energy up since I hadn’t had breakfast yet. It’s a great place for a date. We didn’t have a reservation, took us less than 10 minutes for a table but was sat in the outdoor area with the see-through tent tarp.

The food is the absolute bomb! 5000yen for the deluxe lunch let, Salad, Pasta, Main and Desert with a coffee too! Each dish was excellent with, salad had loads of goodie, the pasta was great and the fish was amazingly done! By desert time I was stuffed! Be warned don’t fill up on the complementary bread and olive oil served at the beginning or You’ll be too full!

Great value for the set meal! Came in absolutely starving and left satisfied by an assortment of wonderful appetisers, mains and desserts. This is a great restaurant, especially if you’re looking for contemporary American cuisine. It’s a bit on the expensive side for Tokyo; however, highly recommended for vegetarians/vegans. They’ll do their best to accommodate dietary restrictions and food allergies. Service was top-notch.

I’ve been living in Japan for 8 years, and this is truly one of the best services I’ve experienced! Especially the staff member with yellow hair, he’s fantastic. Highly recommend trying their steak, perfectly smoky and cooked just right!

This was in my list for quite some time. Place gets 5 star but only for ambience and location. Weekly lunch with tea/coffee and small bread is still better to go for than long unnecessary hype on weekend. The big plates are called big but as you see in pictures rather extremely moderate! Chicken and fish dishes for 2300-2500yen is rather too high for taste, quality and specially portion size! Ideally given everything they should have been priced around 1500-1600 yen hence you pay for sitting ambience than food quality! Very average if you are food lover.
Chandrika — Google review
Food was good especially as they tried to help my son with gluten free options. Thank you 🙏 the burger was good. I have chicken breast coated with bread crumbs which came with mashed potato and some green rocket and a few raw tomatoes. Only criticism is I would prefer steamed vegetables or grilled vegetables like carrots peppers etc. or grilled tomatoes rather then raw because raw tomatoes does not go with hot foods. This is the only criticism for the restaurant manager to improve for the future 👍

The three appetizers served first (burdock kimchi, Japanese black beef miso, and mixed namul) showed the careful work that goes into making the dish. Date of visit: June 2024 I made reservations about a month prior. A credit card was required for the reservation. I think this place is a hidden gem, literally. At the time of visit the building was under construction. We took a while trying to find the entrance. We ended up finding a narrow door and going up stairs. The service and food were amazing. We sat at the counter directly in front of the chefs, so we could see them making everything. We ended up doing the ¥11,000 menu and ordered sake & beer. They did not have English menus, so Google Translate helped us here. I could see they had an outdoor patio/exit. The restaurant has a small space, but there were a couple private rooms with private parties. Credit card accepted. Bathroom available.

Starting with edamame tofu, tempura, three kinds of sashimi, karasumi, unglazed conger eel, deep-fried tilefish, steamed abalone, chilled corn chawanmushi, fried eggplant, crab, octopus rice for the final dish, and dessert, it was so filling that I couldn't finish it all. I was particularly impressed with the tilefish, whose crunchy scales went perfectly with the sake. It's my favorite restaurant because the seasonal ingredients, Ozaki beef, and seafood from the Naruto Straits are really delicious. (Original) . 池尻大橋にあるミシュランにも掲載されてもう10何年も通っている割烹の旬菜おぐら家さんに行って来たよ. 四季折々の食材や尾崎牛や鳴門海峡の魚介がほんと美味しくてお気に入りのお店.

(Translated by Google) It's a one-minute run from the Ikejiri-Ohashi South Exit. There's no need to run, but I was running late so I made a sprint. At times like these, it's nice to be close to the station. There are two entrances. You can enter from either the main street or the back alley. A course meal of about 10 dishes. Unfortunately, I only managed to take two photos, It was crisp Japanese cuisine, made with fish and vegetables rather than meat. The flavors were so delicate that it really put my palate to the test. And by delicate, I mean the seasoning is light. You could say the cuisine makes the most of the flavor of the ingredients. The presentation, the dishes, everything is beautiful. The restaurant is clean. Even the restrooms are clean. I'm happy with how clean it is. I couldn't get a photo, Matsutake rice is a great choice in autumn.

Ramen restaurant
Chabuzen is a cozy and welcoming eatery located in a residential area of Shimokitazawa. The name translates to 'food therapy diner,' and it's known for its down-to-earth atmosphere and thoughtfully sourced vegan cuisine. The menu features hearty and healthy options, with everything being vegetarian or vegan, including many gluten-free choices such as ramen made with rice noodles. The owner, an elderly vegan man, adds to the charm of this tiny but authentic spot.
We got the No. 1 (recommended) dish and the spicy ramen and loved them! Both broth tasted so flavourful and also comforting, with excellent thin noodles that are the right amount of bouncy chewy and substantial - get the full toppings as they were great, especially the tofu. It’s a small restaurant with beautiful interiors including tatami seating for two groups and two bar seats, and everything was prepared and served by a kind chef. Will definitely be back again the next time we’re here!

Small vegan eatery nested in a residential area. The sitting area is limited and shoes need to be taken off before sitting on the raised platform with low tables if not using the bar counter seat. The rice yeast dragon ramen is pretty good. Curry ramen has the taste of curry but it's not spicy. Gyoza was also decent as well

I had garlic-flavored ramen. This time I tried rice flour noodles, which tasted like soba noodles. It's also super tasty to add rice to the remaining soup, so I hope you'll try it! (post added on December 14, 2024) The vegan curry (the rice was germinated fermented brown rice!) was delicious as well as the vegan ramen. Apparently, this ramen shop was originally a restaurant that served soup curry, not ramen, so it was full of attention to detail. (post added on October 26, 2024) I come here to eat when I have a chance to visit the Tokyo area for work. The owner of this restaurant, which opened in 2008, is a one-man operation. The owner has a strong commitment to thoroughly avoid using ingredients that contain food additives that may be harmful to health. The ramen soup is made with vegetable stock and yeast liquid derived from brown rice, which gives it a distinctive flavor and leaves a lingering strong aftertaste. The noodles are not Chinese noodles, but thin pasta noodles like capellini, which may feel strange to some people (I think the reason he don't use Chinese noodles is to avoid kansui, a food additive). You can also change the noodles to rice noodles. The fried dumplings are also very delicious and will go well with alcohol. It's a little far from the station, about a 10-minute walk, but the parking lots nearby aren't too expensive, so you can come by car even from far away.

First things first, cash only. Cozy place, you need to remove your shoes and sit traditionally if possible. I have an issue with my hip but I was still able to make it work. It only seats two tables. This was my favorite food of the whole Tokyo section of my trip, it's very hard to find traditional Japanese food that's vegan or vegetarian. The man that runs the restaurant is soft spoken, kind, and a very talented chef.

We arrived at 9pm after a 10-minute walk from the station and were really glad we made it in time before the shop closed!! We loved the vegan ramen - the broth was amazing, and fried gyoza were really good too! It was exactly what we needed in a cold winter evening! Will absolutely recommend it!

Very traditional looking shop, cash only and shoeless. The menu is fully vegan. I took the recommended ramen which was both rich in flavour and deep while being light enough to be able to also enjoy some gyoza. The owner is also super nice. Great atmosphere and food, I highly recommend this place !

The ramen was delicious, the restaurant is vegan and also has gluten free options, is a small, Japanese style place, many nice Ramen and gyoza options. The gyoza was not too much much my taste, but my friend liked it. A bit pricey, so be prepared to spend more than other normal Ramen place.
