Specialty Museums
Museum Silkeborg, Hovedgården is a must-visit destination for art and history enthusiasts. The museum houses an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, showcasing works by renowned Danish artists like Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby. One of its most famous exhibits is the well-preserved Tollund Man, offering fascinating insights into the ancient bog body and the Bronze Age and Iron Age in Denmark. The museum's beautiful early 20th-century architecture adds to its allure.
I studied Tollund Man in an archeology class at Virginia Tech in 1982. It was such a fascinating story that I had to see him in person one day. Therefore, my wife and I made the trip over from Washington, DC last month as part of a broader trip to Denmark. Unfortunately the museum was closed due to off season hours on the day we visited. We thought, what the heck let's knock on the door. Fortunately, a few members of the staff were were working that day, felt sorry for us, and invited us inside. The resident historian Albert personally showed us around and explained the exhibits in detail. He is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. The exhibit on bog people and the Tollund Man in particular did not disappoint us. Other exhibits focus on the history of Silkeborg and the settlement of Jutland by prehistoric people. It's a small but interesting museum that requires an hour or so to see the exhibits and it's well worth the price of admission, which we did pay for. There is also a self service cafeteria on site.
Sparky A — Google review
It's a fun museum to visit if in the area. Takes an hour or so. They have a bog man's head whose story is interesting to read. The story on the iron Age was most interesting to me and the temporary exhibition on skeletons was entertaining. The rest is about what you'd expect from a city museum (in a city this small). Friendly lady to welcome your, price is 90dkk(~12€)
Floris H — Google review
This is an amazing and fascinating museum with Tollund Man as the centerpiece of a comprehensive exhibit. Tollund Man is the prime example of preserved bog people in thousands of books and university textbooks on anthropology and other subjects.....it truly is extraordinary to see him in person. Helpful and lovely staff too.

Fantastic, cozy museum! Our kid loves mummies and the Stone age / Iron age periods. We came all the way from Aarhus just to see thi museum!
Boris B — Google review
The local history museum in Silkeborg is a cut above most similar museums I've visited. There is nothing at the entrance to say its open and its a big, imposing door on the building, but don't be put off. (I almost thought it was closed as it was late in the day.) Inside there are well displayed local collections of glass and local historical artifacts but biggest exhibition covers pottery (old and new) and the star of the show is 'Tollund Man'. This is a well preserved iron age body (going back to 500BC) which is exceptionally well preserved and was dug up in a nearby bog. It's an exhibit of international importance and is alongside a much bigger display on Iron Age life. The museum has a large cafe, though it wasn't open when I was there. It's well worth a visit.
Rob H — Google review
Nicely presented local museum with comprehensive coverage of the Tollund Man and Elling Woman who are housed in a separate building along with a good selection of artefacts and commentary in English and Danish.
Dougie P — Google review
Been over 30 years since I first visited here, and it’s still an amazing exhibit to see and learn from. Silkeborg is also a nice town with nice views, forests, hills, lakes and more.
Walter H — Google review
As museums go it was very small but interesting enough and well layed out. I think people only go for the tollund man, a perfectly preserved bog man.

Mountain peak
Himmelbjerget, also known as 'The Sky Mountain' or 'The Mountain of Heaven,' is a 147-meter hill in Denmark, offering breathtaking views of the Sohojlandet and the surrounding lake. It is easily accessible by car with several parking spots available. Visitors can enjoy a short walk from the parking lot to the summit where a 19th-century tower stands, providing an unparalleled panoramic view.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beautiful views and peaceful nature! Himmelbjerget is one of Denmark’s highest points, with stunning views over lakes and forests. Easy walk to the top, a historic tower, and perfect for a day trip. Great spot for photos and nature lovers!
Buthaina O — Google review
Beautiful view and a nice hiking area - I suggest going from the long route hiking parking lot at the bottom of the hill in the forest and then hiking up to the Tower and THEN go for the short hike to grab an ice cream at the resort near by. Really not much more to see by paying to go inside the tower - but the family thought it was fun.
Russell R — Google review
♿ Entrance = Yes (outdoors) ♿ Parking = Yes. ♿ Building = Not inside the tower but you can go outside around the tower. ♿ Elevator = no, it's outside with ramps. This is an interesting place you want to visit during the summer time to benefit the most of it but it has their downside too. I will start with the downside first. It's definitely targeted to tourists and families (with children) as it has about 3 ice cream shops and a souvenir shop targeted for a younger audience. The parking lot is not for free and you will have to pay to have access to get into the tower(10 krones) and you can only pay with a card. 10 krones isn't much. During the summer time the trash bins are attracting wasps due to the food litter especially close to the food shops. This makes sitting on a bench unpleasant. The place is usually crowded with families and children so careful where you walk. This place is not in walking range unless you book a hotel. The better side is that you get a beautiful sight to watch over the area. Where you can take pictures and good memories especially on the top of the tower. You can bring your dogs with you but not inside the tower. Their is a playground for kids so you can have a small moment for yourself. Wheelchair users can go on all the way to the top too but bad walkers may have a struggle. You won't spend for a long time here but sure is worth a check!
Crafo — Google review
Nice viewpoint but nothing more in special. Paid parking at the top.
Michiel — Google review
I think it’s one of the must see attractions close to Aarhus. There are several paths around the top which you can choose to walk on. End the day with an icecream and a beer/coffee next to the parking lot.
Baris Ø — Google review
Beautiful place to visit. Nice 😊
Pemika A — Google review
This lovely landmark is really food for the soul. The view from the top is breathtaking and likely unmatched in Denmark. The walk from the parking lot is short and the area also has a playground for the kids and an Ice Cream shop. The price to visit the tower at the summit is well worth it. Visit Himmelbjerget if you get the chance.
Thomas N — Google review
Himmelbjerget ("The Sky Mountain" or "The Mountain of Heaven") is a hill located between Ry and Silkeborg. With its altitude 147 m is the 7th highest hill in Denmark. It grew to fame in 19th century, as people gathered here to admire the magnificent views and celebrate the birth of the Danish nation. On top of the hill is a 25.1 m tall tower, that was erected in 1875 to honour King Frederik VII and his role in giving the Danish people the country's first constitution in 1849, thereby ending the preceding era of absolute monarchy. Close to the top are more monuments, most honouring individuals, but also one to commemorate women's right to vote in 1915.

Art museum
Museum Jorn in Silkeborg is a cultural gem nestled in the heart of Denmark, showcasing the works of renowned Danish artist Asger Jorn. The museum features a diverse collection with changing exhibitions of global modern art, including pieces from the COBRA group and artists like Alechinsky, Appel, Picasso, Raveel, and Roel D'Haese. Set amidst picturesque surroundings by the river Gudenaen and lush forests, the museum offers visitors a serene experience.
Really beautiful museum. Didn't know about this artist but thanks to the museum, I have come to learn about him. Highly recommend if you need something to do. It was perfect for a rainy day. There's a café and museum store.
Fatima B — Google review
Museum Jorn is a quiet and small museum. It can be an enjoyable stop for those interested in Asger Jorn’s style. Some of the works are quite interesting and unique, and overall, the museum has a different kind of atmosphere. If you have time in Silkeborg, it’s worth a visit.
Volkan A — Google review
You have to visit this beautiful museum and enjoy some of his great, great paintings.....AND then take a walk in INDELUKKET

Zoo
Nature & Parks
AQUA Aquarium & Wildlife Park is a small yet charming establishment that showcases Danish habitats through its interactive aquarium and park, featuring various native animals and nature exhibitions. The environment is cozy and geared towards children with an excellent playground that includes educational water machines. In addition to the fish, visitors can also see otters, beavers, and other cute animals in the mini zoo area. The premises also offer food options at their cafe.
A fun place with nice exhibits and many interesting and cool animals to observe. Information is also displayed nicely and in an easy-to-learn format. A couple of hours at minimum, even half a day can be spent here with ease.
Máté S — Google review
♿ Entrance = Yes ♿ Parking = Yes ♿ Building = Yes ♿ Elevator = medium size There are many parking lots in front of the building where you can park and the entrance is big enough for wheelchair users. The main building has a souvenir area, AQUA and outside there are several animals and a massive playground. The Aqua building is a bit of a let down if you don't speak danish. Most of the floors are only in the danish language. The outside has like 19 different animals and every hour some of the animals are fed by the zookeeper's. They are also telling more about the backstory of the animal. The entire park is accessible by a wheelchair but the only thing you may want to keep in mind that the sand walking path can be soft at times beEventually you will come across a big water playground for the kids and I'm talking around the size of one animal place, which makes This place amazing for kids if they have swimming clothes. One thing I don't understand is why the snacks and the ice cream shop is only open on the weekend. They are missing out on a lot of money by having the shops closed because of the kids and the big playground. Most families have 2+ kids. They have free WIFI. I have seen everything in 3 hours but it may be possible for you to do less making it debatable if the entry price seems fair or a bit too expensive (especially if you don't understand the danish language in the AQUA)
Crafo — Google review
It is not that big but the water play is very amazing. They called it a aquarium zoo but not much fish nor not much animal Instead the design for water plan is very nice, based on the environment of the beaver, which is the animal you see. Their website can improve on more info on English and also let parents know to bring bathing suits
Hector W — Google review
Go on a sunny day if you have children — then it’s probably a 5-star place to be. Most of the park is outdoors, and they have a big playground, which is fantastic for kids. Everything is based around water mechanics, so bring some swimwear! Why it was a 3-star place for us: we don’t have children (yet), so we came for the animals and to learn something. In the aquarium, as a foreigner, you’ll need a good internet connection for Google Translate because everything is in Danish… The upper floor looked educational, but I had no idea what it was trying to tell me. I found one monitor that could switch to English, but it failed to load. Outside, there is some English on the signs, which helped a bit. The otter exhibit is so overgrown with vegetation that, with a bit of luck, we saw one — but it ran away immediately. The beaver exhibit was the best part! One of the beavers was swimming while the others, including a few babies, were sleeping — it looked really cozy! All the animals are native to Denmark, so don’t expect any fancy, bright-colored fish. There’s a small parking lot in front of the aquarium. You’ll need some luck to find a spot there.
Justin — Google review
Nice local fauna, animals, and fish display. Many places for children to play, places to eat, and picnic areas.
Alise P — Google review
This place is a hidden gem, especially for anyone interested in local Danish nature. The focus on fauna from the Gudenåen area is both educational and fascinating, and the otters, racoons and beavers are so cute. You can watch the otters being fed and hear how they get there. They also do rescue work and take care of otters needing help. The staff are friendly and welcoming. While the aquarium seems to cater mainly to families with young children, it’s just as enjoyable for adults visiting solo. The eel exhibit, in particular, is both intriguing and a little eerie, making it a standout experience. The location itself is stunning, set in a beautiful area perfect for a peaceful walk by the lakes and river afterward. It's well worth a visit!
Alpár I — Google review
Exhibit for the fish is a bit limited but combined with garden outside makes it worth coming here with children. Also there is a good walking trail along side the lake. Café Dråben is where its extremely disappointing. I dont think the fault is with the teenage girls doing the cooking but rather the ingredients and how the girls were taught to prepare food. One of the worst salads i ate in my life.
F S — Google review
Amazing experience! Instead of going and seeing the standard 'zoo setup', use the experience to see what cute creatures and other animals are living in the forests, rivers here in Europe. Easy to get there, by car or train (I travelled from Aarhus by train). Tickets cost cheaper if bought online and I suggest visiting the centre in morning, around 10:00 then the animals haven't had their breakfast yet and are more active and visible. Timewise - and hour is enough, in case you are in rush, if not, then you can enjoy the park for longer time, there was a space dedicated for children and areas where you can sit down and rest for a while, if needed. Recommend!

We had the pleasure of dining at the exceptional Restaurant Piaf in Silkeborg and were thoroughly impressed with our experience. From the moment we arrived, the ambiance was inviting, and the staff were attentive, professional and friendly. The food was simply outstanding, with each dish exquisitely crafted and bursting with flavor. As lovers of fine cuisine, we were impressed with the innovative yet classic menu that had a perfect balance of flavors. My French/Spanish boyfriend, who is also a chef, was especially impressed with the French nostalgic kitchen that reminded him of his childhood. We highly recommend everyone to try the minimum 5-course meal or even better the 7-course meal with the wine menu. It's definitely worth it! Overall, we highly recommend to anyone who wants to have an unforgettable dining experience. The food, service, and ambiance are all impeccable, and we can't wait to return. Thank you to everyone and especially Marc!

The restaurant is known for its warm atmosphere and excellent service. The menu features simple yet elegant dishes prepared with great skill using often local and/or organic ingredients.
In short we loved this experience! The restaurant has a great spot bordering both a fantastic view of the lake and the forest. We could enjoy a romantic evening that startede by sunset in the outside garden, which has small privat spots in the sun. The staff here was very friendly and accommodating. We had a six course menu with wine menu. The combination was excellent! It's always intriguing to taste new combinations with great wine. Definitely a place well worth visiting.

What a wonderful place serving food like my grandma (farmor) made it and every plate served beautifully with love and a chat. We were in Denmark a few days before Christmas and this just brought Christmas spirit right into our stomachs and hearts. Even the classic Christmas dessert Ris a la Mande was superb.

Really nice place. The food is fantastic, it's only really small issues that would make the food 5 stars. The service is great. But the waiters seemed a little distracted. It didn't feel like they gave their attention when they came around. I like the place, but the decor could use a touch up and the music was really dated and didn't match the atmosphere.

Amazing restaurant. You can choose from a list of open sandwich. Each of them really delicious and huge portion. Waiters are really nice and attentive. You can taste the wine before taking your final choice, and can even look at the dessert plate before choosing which one you want. The owner often get out to great the new customers. Really recommended for a local experience !

This place gets 6 stars ⭐️. It was a rainy day and we came with a dog. Dogs are not allowed in restaurants in Denmark. We did not know that. The chef told us we could sit outside with blankets. We made that choice and it was wonderful. They did not had an English menu but the girl (Victoria)translated the whole menu. She gave us good advice over what are typically danish food. She was really good! Professional and very kind. She explained the ways and everything so clearly. The food was really good. We had the sandwiches menu and they were really good lots of toppings. I ask for a white wine and what kind I liked. She came with 2 options and I could have a taste. Overall this was a great experience! Lovely service.. and great food!

Really delicious lunch! Absolutely top quality food- only thing: for that price there was too little “fill” in that portion! Atmosfære 4 Very cozy and traditions rich place with a lot of history. Great battiserie feel 1 point deducted for general volume levels Service 5 Very surprised by the waiters attention to detail and desire to make the meal better for me as a customer. The wait times were very reasonable as well and there was no lack of oppertunity to order more if needed. Food 3 Advised by the waiter to not get the mohjito which is usually my favourite because it "comes in a bottle" The was only one kind of wine for glass, which was kind of bitter and not suited for the red meats on the menu. I had the salmon as a starter You get your money's worth but the asparagus was very disproportionate to the salmon The cream cheese was great and complimented the salmon greatly. It was much better when paired with the bread provided as the structure of the salmon and cream cheese required the sturdiness of the bread For main course I got the pepper steak I ordered medium rare but the steak was definitely more on the medium than the rare side. The vegetables on the side felt like garnish rather than a part of the meal as there was little to no flavor to find in them. The pepper sauce which gives the steak it's title was great with a lot of flavor packed in. The fries were crisp and delicious but I did have to specifically ask for a dipping sauce
