Art gallery
Touchstones Rochdale is housed in a historic building made from Yorkshire stone and serves as a town museum, art gallery, visitor information center, and study center. The venue dates back to 1883 and offers insights into Rochdale's human and natural history, including the impact of industries like cotton mills and the development of transportation infrastructure. It also showcases exhibits on the region's landscape shaped by glaciers.
This place is great, for a small-ish town like Rochdale it really punches above its weight. I took my little girl who is about 17 months and she loved all the interactive exhibits and the arts and crafts. I came here for work to set up a live stream in the gallery several years ago too I remember the staff being very lovely and welcoming. The football exhibit was great, although some of it was a bit questionable and not sure I'd pay £6 for a zine that in all honestly looks like a bloke got a camera from Argos and took it to a footy match, but some of it was phenomenal. I took some photos of the old-timey artwork because I really liked it. Overall I'd say the people of Rochdale are spoilt to have such a lovely museum on their doorstep (as I am with Portland Basin in Ashton which is also worth a visit if you're into local social history). The art gallery is really cool, a good mix of contemporary and classical and it doesn't feel at all pretentious. We had a really fun visit so thank you.

I've not been here since I was a kid, so I thought I would take my kids while we were in the area. It was a pleasant way to spend an hour. It was really relaxed with lots of things to see and read. The toilets are easy to access and really clean, earning an ooh from my Mom as she opened the door. The 1st floor has a really immersive experience for children. My teen commented that we had all found our places as my son played with the eco friendly toys, she did some craft, my mom looked at the prams and I sat on my bum surveying them all. We were made extremely welcome when we entered, never felt harassed and weren't followed around or watched constantly (though I suspect we were on cctv which I'm more than happy with). For the anxiety people, there are clear directions on what to do and where to go, approachable staff members, easy to find toilets and it was clean and well organised. I felt comfortable from the second I walked through the door to the second I left. Parking is easy in the multistory car park across the road.

Brilliant art gallery and museum in Rochdale. Great place to learn about the local history and famous people of the area. It's also got a cafe, shop and had a craft market in one of the rooms when I was there.

Beautiful old venue. Great staff. Current exhibition is Mischief by Liz Collins which is absolutely world class and a huge coup for Rochdale.

Great little museum. Interesting exhibits. Absolutely gorgeous cafe with great coffee.

I spent an hour and a half on a inspiring adventure with a good friend, neither of us to look at would give an impression of even being slightly interested in in art and local history but we were given a tour by a wonderful staff member unfortunately the uninterested man on the till was only giving us a suspicious eye but that aside Touchstone is a must for a great afternoon in Rochdale and the cafe is a whole review on its own

Love this place. Have been many time and will be going many more. lots of informative and interesting local history. welcoming feel with friendly atmosphere. I have been to several of the exhibitions held at touchstones and loved every one. Have visited with family children, pensioner's and when friends visit from out of town. Everyone would like to return. Lots to do. Lovely gift shop and you can also get something to eat and a decent brew.

Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Healey Dell Nature Reserve, located just 2 miles from Rochdale town center, is a picturesque beauty spot and wildlife sanctuary with a rich industrial history. The River Spodden has carved through the woodlands over thousands of years, creating stunning scenery and impressive waterfalls that once powered ancient mills. A disused 1800s railway line now serves as a nature trail offering magnificent views from a 100-foot-high viaduct.
Visited Healey Dell Nature Reserve in Rochdale and it’s a hidden gem. The place is full of peaceful woodland walks, and the sounds of flowing water really add to the atmosphere. The waterfall was small but serene The old stone viaduct was impressive too, towering above the trees and adding a real sense of history to the area. Plenty of photo opportunities around, especially with how green and vibrant everything is at this time of year. There’s a small car park nearby which makes access easy, and even on a warm day, Definitely worth a visit if you're after a relaxing nature walk with a bit of scenic charm.
Lukman A — Google review
Was looking for a pretty waterfall without too many people and we got what we asked for! The route isn’t the most well sign posted, luckily I had downloaded a map from Komoot beforehand so we did okay, however a few other people weren’t sure where to go either. (When you drive in and park, it’s best to walk back the direction you came in.) Some gorgeous spots here though so would definitely recommend. There was also a tearoom with a good menu which was unfortunately closed when were there, so we will be returning to try that out!
N. B — Google review
Fantastic place to go for a walk, Some amazing sights and a beautiful tea room, bar and bbq area. Prices for food was very reasonable although we just opted for toast (but it was really good toast). All in all a great way to waste a few hours, well worth the visit, will be returning soon with my grandson.
David B — Google review
Visited 03/05/2025, decent amount of parking, the car park road area is patchy with pot holes so be careful driving. There is picture signs of the area opposite the tea room area, however unless you get a map or know the area the walks are not well sign posted which is why only four stars instead of five, if it hadn’t been for a helpful member of staff at the tea room who guided us to where the old munition buildings were to the rear we wouldn’t have then found the walk adjacent to the water stream that took us into lovely green areas for our walk. I’d say take walking shoes or wellies if doing this as plenty of muddy and rough path areas not suitable for shoes with no grips etc. If toilets required there is a couple in the heritage centre adjacent to the tea rooms, didn’t find any others around the area so plan if need to go or come back to if needed. I’d recommend if the work units near car park is open to go look and visit the items on sale, purchased a 3D printed octopus and a fridge magnet, great value and craftsmanship and the lady who first met us was very helpful as was the gent who came a little later. Worth a visit but do plan ahead as to route to take as once here it is hard to navigate without signs around the nature reserve. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Our first visit. We parked jn the Healey dell tea rooms car park. We were given a map and off we went. It was a beautiful autumnal walk with a river, waterfalls and a duck pond along the way. The tea rooms were great, we would go back there again.

Wouldn't want to encourage too many visitors but what a stunning bit of nature, hills, resevoir and my favourite era for concrete - a bit of 60's dam building thrown in. Wow. Be nice to see the boat house turned into a socially run cafe.

Beautiful place, lovely walk with the family after Sunday lunch, there's a park , tea room,so relaxing. Beautiful views.

An intriguing historical place from the abandoned railway viaduct; remnants of a woollen mill to a munitions factory during WW11.. The extended area has many more places of interesting walks.

A nice little lake for an outing. It’s nice for a couple of hours and there are cafes and ice cream places around. There are also quite a few paid car parks available.
S A — Google review
The lake was so picturesque sat watching the water sports while eating a massive Cod from the takeaway across the road, Parking was ok but the parking attendants were out in force issuing tickets for people failing to get back to their vehicles in time so be aware. The pubs are nice with great food but can be very busy, Its a great walk around the lake with of Ducks Geese and seagulls in abundance. Lovely day out.
David H — Google review
First of all, Don't get stung if you can by parking in the pubs car park, there's one just after it which is half the price but normally pretty full so try to get there early to secure a cheaper spot!! Hollingworth lake is a great little spot with plenty of activities from Boat rides, Fishing playgrounds for kids and even hides for bird watching or photography. It took me about 2 hours to walk around completely at a slowish pace talking photos as I went even bumping into a fellow photographer for a chat. About half way round there's a little cafe with a seating area which is perfect if you take children with you to give them a break.
Rik — Google review
We enjoyed a brisk walk around Hollingworth lake earlier this afternoon, luckily the weather was quite kind with no rain and quite a bit of sun 🌞. Although in certain areas the paths had some quite large puddles from previous downpours and certain area's were covered in leafs so be careful under foot at this time of the year.

Historical place
The Rochdale Pioneers Museum, located at 31 Toad Lane, is a significant historical site that marks the birth of the modern co-operative movement. It was here that the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers began trading in 1844 to address the plight of skilled workers affected by industrialization. The museum offers insightful exhibits showcasing the journey of the co-op from its inception to its current societal role.
It was an official visit as we were representing Pokhara Royal Cooperative from Nepal. They were really helpful during the entire booking process and were always there to help. As we booked in for a detailed tour, Sarah helped us to understand every aspect of the museum. Anyone who wants to know about how a co-operative started just books for a detailed tour. Or else if you are nearby just visit and learn more as it is free of cost.
Meeraj D — Google review
A lovely little museum explaining how the Co-operative movement started. Free to enter and friendly staff. Little gift shop and toilets 😊.

Small museum which is interesting providing background and history of the Cooperative movement. Friendly staff and clean toilets. Worth a visit if you’re visiting Rochdale.

Loved the layout of the museum very interactive for children and the dress up part is good aswell. Fun for both adults and children.

Arrived in plenty of time before closing but were made to feel unwelcome and they were closing early and a temporary sign was put on the door whilst we were in there saying they were closing even earlier. My mum is registered blind and there was so much text to read but she didn't feel comfortable asking the staff to give her information after our welcome. We probably stayed about 15 mins.
Rachel T — Google review
Visited a few weeks ago, on a Saturday, after a great tour of the Town Hall - to find it closed with a sign in the window. This is despite Google Website showing it to be open. Review reflects approach to customer service - perhaps take lesson from Town Hall organisers on when people are available & keen to see key aspects of Rochdale history?
Ray P — Google review
Great space with loads of fascinating information about the Pioneers and the CO-OP There are interactive parts for small children and it was free to enter. Check the website to make sure they are open

Historical place
The Ellenroad Engine House Steam Museum is a captivating destination for families, offering an immersive experience in industrial history. Visitors are awed by the sheer size of the world's largest working steam mill engines, Victoria and Alexandra, which date back to 1917 and boast a combined 3000 horsepower. The museum's volunteers provide engaging and informative explanations about the engines, adding depth to the experience.
Great site, visit when in steam 1st weekend in the month. Even better go when there's an event, vintage cars. Fantastic engine is the star but boiler room, blacksmith shop all open and working. Bot tricky getting around if you have mobility issues, but there is stair lift to upper level. Volunteers very knowledgeable and helpful. Small tea bar avaliable.
Pete W — Google review
Absolutely brilliant 😊 seeing the machines still running just shows how good the UK Engineering was, I would definitely recommend this as a trip into the past.
Andrew R — Google review
What a fantastic place - a real living museum where you step back in time to see the industrial powerhouse. All the volunteers were extremely helpful and had plenty of time to chat and talk about the engine. The cake was also nice from the cafe!
Jonny S — Google review
Great day out, very interesting & three steam engines not just the one
Andy B — Google review
An excellent day out with the children. There's so much history and a working steam powered engine. £5 adults and children go free, all monies go towards the upkeep. A must see.

Excellent museum. Some great exhibits and the main steam engine is something to be in awe of.

WOW... WHO COOKS LIKE THAT..... 10/10 Vegetarian SUNDAY ROAST DINNER, Including a portion of beautifully prepared and sliced Roast Beef for our baby Chihuahua Ted! From walking in requesting if I could take Teddy into the garden area, to paying the EXTREMELY reasonably priced bill for what I would say is EASILY Award winning food ... It was effortless, a dream and nothing was too much trouble for the lady behind the bar, owner Lisa and her team. I have been visiting this beautiful, boutique, stunningly decorated restaurant for years, But THIS PARTICULAR Chef EXCEEDED ALL THE REST! Blown away and would highly recommend a visit. Rain or Shine they have covered EVERY angle including outdoor heaters and stunning blankets and cushions for those grey days, uncovered areas for the sun seekers and a stunning inside restaurant for the evening's where you want a little cosy but elegant experience. A beautiful magical cabin seats private parties of which today a Baby shower was happening and it looked like something out of OK Magazine! Lisa has maintained such a stunning eatery and menu, with friendly, welcoming and soul warming service, with a Chef that exceeds all expectations. You can tell he was born to cook! Can't wait for next Sunday... Don't even think about going... JUST GO!

From the moment we walked in, everything about this restaurant was exceptional. The food was of outstanding quality every dish was beautifully presented, bursting with flavor, and clearly made with the freshest ingredients. You could taste the care and creativity in every bite. The service was absolutely spot on. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they do. They struck the perfect balance between being professional and personable, making us feel welcome without ever being intrusive. And the atmosphere Just perfect. Whether it was the soft lighting, the ambient music, or the cozy yet elegant decor, everything came together to create a space that felt both relaxed and special. It’s the kind of place where time slows down and you just enjoy the moment. Truly a memorable experience I can’t wait to come back!

Wasn't aware different menu on Xmas eve. Sat by door, bad start. Table had drink rings and tomato ketchup. Asked waitress to clean table. She cleaned 1 place setting, there were 3 of us. Asked another waitress to clean, pointed ketchup at 2 places on table. More or less asked to order starters as delay in getting food out. Should offer free starter if delay. Garlic bread 10.50 - like a flat bread, not bread like. Bottle of cider 6.75. When came for order, said couple of specials, might not have burgers on ( would have left if this was case). £21 for burger - told no pigs in blankets to go with them....lamb shank smallest ever seen £30. Booked at 6pm, food served 7.45. Drink order never came had to ask again. Seemed plenty of staff on. We were asked if we could move tables to accommodate someone. Declined. Gave £5 off for one burger. Offered 1 free Sunday lunch for poor service. Had visited once before and never been back, now I know why.

We had our wedding in the cabin and we couldn't have asked for better. The communication and planning prior to the day was great and Lisa and the staff were accommodating with my requests. Thank you to everyone, especially Kaylee for making our special day one to remember

Lovely busy sunny day, food was delicious, we opted for the small plates menu. Our food arrived quickly, well prepared and beautifully presented. Each dish was so fresh and full of flavour. My favourite was the croquettes , they were so tasty in a lovely tasting sauce and the beef we chose was so tender and perfectly cooked. The staff are always so helpful, we tried so many different seating areas today, ,a bit like musical chairs , till we found our perfect spot, and still, the staff were so pleasant and didn't mind one bit ,helping us to feel comfortable , it was just us wanting every little bit of sunshine we could pinch. There are plenty of seating areas to choose from indoors and out. The outside area is so lovely and cosy. If you want somewhere welcoming with a lovely ambience ,nice staff and delicious food, then I'd highly reccomend.

At the John Milne Table Table, guests can indulge in a delightful array of classic international dishes, grilled specialties, and hearty burgers. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it an ideal spot for any occasion. Diners have praised the efficient service and generous portion sizes that ensure satisfaction with every meal. Seasonal celebrations like Christmas are particularly memorable here, with festive music enhancing the dining experience.
Holly Ben and Erin are so welcoming at the John milne. They always give lovely and helpful service to all customers. We will definately be returning as food is just as good as the service (and the cocktails are amazing).

My mum and I come here regularly for the £6 menu. It's always great food, good sized portion and Holly, Tina team are always so welcoming. I have visited today with my mum and two children for the unlimited breakfast. Both the children's breakfast were free with a paying adult so it's been fantastic value for money. Great variety from the buffet and excellent cooked breakfast from the chef Doo! We will be returning very soon!

Went for an early tea on the Monday to Friday 12 till 6 menu. A limited choice but at a very reasonable price. We both had starters and mains then shared a dessert with a bottle of wine for £41. The restaurant definitely needs a spruce up but the food was good and the service excellent. Would definitely visit again.

I have eaten here a few times, it is a nice restaurant and we usually always enjoy the food just the odd occasion where we haven't but you dont know until you try different food wether you like it or not, would be nice to see some more dessert options, when we went recently we ordered the dairy milk sundae and it was missing the flake and the dairy milk chocolate pieces they did replace it with only a few chocolate buttons but it wasn't as nice as it has been previously when I have ordered it. I had a couple of cocktails which were really nice and overall we enjoyed our visit. We usually go a couple of times a year usually for a birthday meal out so we don't go that often. I would definitely recommend going and they recently have a couple of decent offers on to save some pennies. The staff are lovely and are always checking in, and there is parking on site they also have a Premier Inn next door if you was looking to stay over.

Honestly I cannot stress enough that the John Milne is by far one of if not the best fully continental breakfast in Greater Manchester. Always look forward to coming here for a better of a breakfast. 10/10. *Chef's Kiss*. Bliss. See you net Saturday! Oh and by the way, those croissants 👀

You order off the menu and it is freshly cooked and delivered to your designated table within a few minutes. The coffee ☕ is excellent, The staff are very attentive and the service is excellent. We also decided to book an evening meal which didn't disappoint at all. Excellent place for Bangladeshi food, love it.... one thing I have little issue is they use too much food color (red) on the curries, the food would be better if no color was added ... rest all excelllent specially the Atmosphere is great.

We went on a busy Saturday evening as a group of 6 people. We had pre-booked a table but it took a while for us to be seated, that said we were in no rush. Once seated at a comfortable round table we had our drinks brought over. A while later our order was taken. The food, when it arrived, certainly hit the spot and was thoroughly enjoyed by all of us. Drinks flowed during the evening and there was a great atmosphere enjoyed by all, even the waiting staff enjoyed our company and decided to interact with us and were involved in our group photo shot (bless)! A slight mar on our evening was that my wife’s hair got singed as she was taking her seat, this was due to a portable heater placed on a windowsill in close proximity to our table and her hair was sucked in,(lucky escape)! However, our dilemma was dealt with immediately and professionally and we received a generous discount at payment. I’m sure that the heater has now been removed too (lesson learned)! Apart from that incident, we had a brilliant time at the Pavilion restaurant, thank you.

We went for dinner and really enjoyed the atmosphere. The food was fresh and delicious. Ordered the popadoms, starters followed by the mains which was a chicken biryani and the shatkora bhuna. We were delighted. It is truly a must-visit destination for any food lover regardless of this restaurant being an Indian cuisine.

We have been ordering from this restaurant for about 1 year now ( give or take ) Food is always good quality . Today though they made a mistake on our order . One of the starters sent was incorrect. I called and they immediately offered to come and bring the correct one . No partial refund , no “ I will bring it next time “ , none of that . They understand that one expects to eat what they ordered and they even gave extra papadoms when they delivered the item . Can not fault them . Excellent attitude, amazing customer service and really good food . We will carry on ordering from here . Thank you

Only left about 15 minutes ago and had to review straight away. Phenomenal experience from start to finish. Probably the most welcoming place I've ever eaten in, attentive doesn't even begin to describe every single member of staff. You are made to feel like a VIP by all of them and then the food comes. Fresh, piping hot, tasty and good prices. Easily the best around. Would add another 5🌟 if I could.

Visited here a couple of times. The food is ok, definitely overpriced for what you get. You can top up on salad, pasta, and bread rolls. Staff are good and seem friendly. Men's toilets are disgusting and, at minimum, need a splash of paint! Cider is terrible as well. need more choice! Don't forget to put your car reg in on entry.

What an evening! Me and my family out together for a meal to celebrate my 19th birthday as well as me being the 1st one in our family to go to university. Great Atmosphere. Great Food. Our server, Paige (aka the girl with the blue hair) was probably one to the best servers that I've ever been served by (not just here but in general when it comes to the restaurant business). Such a down-to-earth person; great banter and very likable. Well-deserved tip given at the end of the night. Would definitely recommend this establishment to those wanting to come together (family, friends etc.) and have a memorable time.

We were given a table pretty quick. Everyone was really friendly. One of the mains was wrong but who I believe to be the manager sorted it and swapped it for the right dish right away. Food was hot and very tasty and our server Ebony was really friendly and helpful!

Lovely staff, Chantelle was very nice. Food was okay, it’s been better when I’ve visited previously. A little cold, sausage overcooked, toast only toasted on one side. But apart from that is was a decent enough breakfast, probably a one off because it’s always been lovely before. Warm welcomes and friendly atmosphere.

The breakfast is not bad. I ordered it as a take away. The place itself is nice and clean. Free bowl of salad and pasta once you order. Reasonable prices. £17 for a “dirty” burger. It was good quality. The chips were nice and hot. Chicken goujons side order with the spicy sauce was very nice.

First visit here and what a little gem we have found. Lovely relaxed ambience with friendly attentive staff.bookings come with a 2 HR slot which is more than enough for a lovely relaxing experience which doesn't feel rushed allowing time to chat and relax between courses. My husband had the soup of the day and I had pate( I asked for extra bruschetta) and it came with more than enough!! For main we both had the chicken roulade which was exquisite , followed by strawberry cheesecake for hubby and sticky toffee pudding for myself, this was on another level, with homemade custard and a thin crispy topping. Amazing experience, definitely be returning soon.

This is one of the best restaurants I have visited so far in north-west England. The excellent service provided by the staff stands out, along with the atmosphere and 10-star food. I arrived with my wife and daughter and we enjoyed a great afternoon, perfect weather for enjoying the terrace, with good music and outdoor dining. When you arrive, they ask you what you would like. Whether you would like a drink before your meal, or if you would like to eat straight away. They have some great starters that are perfect for trying a variety of dishes. In our case, we ordered a couple of starters and I ate them before taking the photo. Sorry, but my hunger betrayed me. I definitely recommend the starters, they are spectacular! We ordered grilled sirloin and it was fresh and very tasty. Everything else, such as vegetable salads and side dishes, was served with great professionalism, one dish after another, without any hassle or waiting. The prices are relatively competitive in the area, but in this case, taking into account the cosy atmosphere of the terrace and how much we enjoyed the views around us, the price-value ratio of what was served was fair. I highly recommend this restaurant. I apologise again for uploading images of the dishes we sampled, but I will definitely return. This place is highly recommended, and I hope to help you enjoy your next visit to this lovely place!!!

Went for the afternoon tea at £25pp was excellent value. All the food items were quality ingredients and super tasty. The scone was warm, which was a plus, and you got a good clotted cream and jam ratio to scone. lt only lost one star for service because we waited a while for the second pot of tea, but it was busy, and we could see staff were really trying to serve everyone so overall the service was good. My son ate from the main menu and had : Starter - Crab starter Main - Beef burger and chips Dessert - Honeycomb sundae We paid a £10 pp deposit, and our total bill with three diet cokes was £100. I felt all in all it was worth it. Would definitely come again.

What a fabulous night we had, service, food, atmosphere all spot on. 10 people out for dinner and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Food was all cooked to perfection! My uncle just mentioned he always loved a knickerbocker glory.. and the waiter said ....leave it with me . Next thing out popped one! Perfect night!

We were a party of 8 people who were celebrating a graduation last week. We sat outside initially enjoying a drink in the sunshine, then we went indoors to our table. The service was very good, and we all enjoyed the food which was a good price. The menu was suited to everyone, and all enjoyed the occasion. We will definitely eat at the Pavillion very soon.
