Piran

Piran is a resort city on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast, known for its long pier and Venetian architecture. Tartini Square is flanked by the Gothic red Venetian House and the frescoed Tartini House. The latter is the birthplace of violinist Giuseppe Tartini. The 19th-century town hall has a stone lion, a symbol of the former Republic of Venice. St. George’s Cathedral, nearby, has 17th-century paintings and marble altars.

St. George's Parish Church is a historical cathedral situated on the waterfront, boasting a clock tower and incredible panoramic views from the top. Constructed in baroque style during the early 17th century, it replaced an older church dating back to 1344. Visitors can view some of the lavishly adorned interior through a metal grille while full access is granted via the Parish Museum of St George, which also features catacombs and treasury items.
A beautiful church in a beautiful location on a hill above Piran. The climb is neither long nor difficult and you can even do it with a stroller. The view is magnificent!

Beautiful church! I love how it was made into a museum. For 4€ you can have your tour in the church and visit the bell tower. For me the church wasn’t as exciting as the bell tower was. From the top of the tower you can see Croatia on the left and Italy on the right, such a wonderful view!
Mila A — Google review
Very nice church on the top of a steep hill/seaside. It has a typical Venetian style Campanile next to it. You get wonderful views of Piran from the church, only beaten by the “Walls of Piran” which are about 10 minutes further up
Andreas W — Google review
It's certainly the landmark of picturesque Piran. It looks disproportionately huge from any point in the old town, but it isn't too tough to climb to its top. The breathtaking view from top worth every bit of effort to be there.
Arnold M — Google review
Amazing views of Piran! Pay €3 (as of August 2025) go up around 130 stairs, and you're there. It's definitely worth visiting if able as you can see the point of Piran and the square.

St. George's Parish Church in Piran is the town's largest and most prominent church, dramatically situated on a hill overlooking the Slovenian Adriatic coast. It also consists of an octagonal Baroque structure with a Roman-age baptismal font. Entry to the church is through a small museum containing religious relics and artifacts. The church complex also consists high freestanding tower offering panoramic views of Piran, the Adriatic, and as far as three countries.
Kevin A — Google review
The church itself wasn't open, except the little entrance hall, but it looks beautiful from inside and outside. However, what is really breathtaking is the view from the square in front of the church.

The Walls of Piran are an ancient and fortified stone town wall with several notable gates, which have been renovated since the 7th century. The walls have undergone changes over time due to the city's expansion, resulting in the preservation of three different walls and seven city gates. While some areas have deteriorated, much of the original construction from between the 7th and 15th centuries remains intact.
Even though the path to the walls is a bit more challenging, the view is definitely worth it. Mostly narrow / steep stairs, not good for people with physical handicap. Good value for money. You can pay with card.
Janali X — Google review
Amazing views over the sea and the town. Cheap entry, only costs €3 per person. It is well worth the walk and the visit. There are a lot of steep steps to climb the towers but the view is great and it is a unique experience.
Viktória É — Google review
The tickets were so cheap, we had a great view of the city from the tower, a bit small for tall people such as myself but nevertheless it was great
Bálint K — Google review
Best 3 Euros spent. Not only is it interesting to explore the walls of the former fortress that protected Piran from enemies approaching it from the landslide, it also has the very best views of Piran to offer. For an obstructed view it’s best to go to almost the end of the wall and be careful on the ladders and stairs, it’s easy to hit your head !
Andreas W — Google review
The Walls of Piran are the defensive walls surrounding the coastal town of Piran, built in the 7th century. Some walls and towers can be accessed for a small entrance fee. It also offers the beautiful panoramic views of the coastal town and Adriatic sea.
Kevin A — Google review
The wall of the city of Piran, known as the “Piransko obzidje”, is one of the most famous symbols of this picturesque historic town on the Slovenian coast. Its history dates back from the 7th century to the early 16th century, serving as protection for the town against invasions, especially during the Ottoman incursions and the period of Venetian rule. Historical Facts and Interesting Details The first phase of fortification was built as early as the 7th century and originally enclosed only the oldest core of the town. As the city grew, the wall was extended several times – the second phase was added during the Venetian rule (late 13th century), and the third and largest in the 15th and 16th centuries due to the threat of the Ottoman Empire. The fortification included three separate sections of walls and seven town gates, most of which are still preserved today. The best-preserved part, with towers, is located on Morgoron Hill southeast of the center, offering a stunning panoramic view of the entire town of Piran, the Adriatic Sea, the Bay of Trieste, and on clear days, even Croatia and Italy. The wall is characterized by Venetian Gothic architecture, later with elements of the Renaissance style. Visiting the Piran Town Wall Today The wall is open to the public daily, usually from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM (summer schedule), with last entry shortly before sunset. The view of the sunset over the sea from here is spectacular. Admission is €3 for adults, less for students, and children under 12 enter for free. Dogs are not allowed. Visitors can climb several towers, but should be prepared for narrow, sometimes uneven and steep stairs. Not suitable for individuals with significant mobility issues. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Legend of Piran and Experience There’s a local legend about the “Witch of Piran,” who was said to protect the town from enemies by conjuring up storms over the sea. Walking along the wall offers not only a journey through history but also unforgettable views and the perfect spot to photograph iconic red rooftops and the turquoise sea. Piran is considered one of the most beautiful examples of a Mediterranean historic fortified town, and its wall is among the most visited places in Slovenia – a must-see for lovers of history and photography. Piran Minorite Monastery, a Roman Catholic monastery perched on a hill overlooking Piran, is steeped in history. It was where Giuseppe Tartini received his early musical education. Visitors can explore the cloisters and feel transported back in time. The monastery is attached to the Church of St Francis of Assisi and features frescoes on its ceilings. With its minimal decor, it reflects monastic simplicity and offers panoramic views of the area.
Although in the dark, it is nevertheless beautiful, calming, peaceful and magical.

A pleasant diversion from the crowds in Tartini square. Even in high season, you’re likely to find at least a little bit of solitude here. If your visit coincides with a concert (classical or baroque most likely) here, don’t hesitate to buy a ticket. It’s likely to be your Piran highlight.

Museums
The Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum, located in the historic center of Piran, is a captivating attraction that showcases the maritime history of the region. Housed in the elegant 19th-century Gabrielli Palace, this museum offers a comprehensive insight into Slovene naval history, Adriatic Sea exploration, sailing traditions, fishing practices, and salt-making. Visitors can explore an array of exhibits featuring naval artifacts, model ships, ancient maps, navigational instruments and interactive displays.
Great museum, highly informative. I liked very much the representation of the amforas through the glass floor. The decoration of the rooms presenting the Venetian and Habsburg era is fascinating. The rooms dedicated to the wars make you think about the pointlessness of fights. The staff is kind and superfriendly.
Márta B — Google review
I was in this museum with my friend. It was pretty interesting to visit it & to know some information about Piran, Slovenia. We have also got free cards from a worker, a very friendly woman.

Excellent the model displays are so intricate and authentic. My fascination and intrigue and love of all things maritime, I spent 5 hours here. Congratulations to all that worked on this museum one of the best I have ever visited in my travels.
Carmella B — Google review
Well worth visiting Piran's small but charming maritime museum with its grand theme of charting both local and Slovenia's national maritime history. There are historical artifacts in abundance (uniforms, instruments, ship models, maps, prints, paintings, etc) occupying the whole of two floors. The proud history and exploits of the Austro-Hungarian and subsequent Yugoslavian navies are my personal favorites but there is much else (the exhibits of the local fishing and shipbuilding industries for example) to excite the interest of anyone remotely interested in seafaring. You might also be fortunate enough to run in to the museum's art historian who is happy to chat and share her considerable knowledge with you!

Very good place to know marine history of Piran.
Wojciech S — Google review
Great museum set over 4 floors. Covers the history of maritime activity in the area from prehistoric times, through Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav times through to present day. A must visit if you love history like I do.
Lee S — Google review
Marine architectures and visual pictures of history came to me as pure delicate work of art, constructing an imaginary bridge between the past and present moment. At the moment of visit, I was briefly able to palpably feel and immerse into the life of seaman - vividly triggering me to rethink about the quote “Call me Ishmael”. When I visited, the price for adult was 4 euros :)

Seafood restaurant
Located in the beautiful town of Piran, Pri Mari is a family-run Mediterranean restaurant highly recommended by Rough Guide. The owners, Mara and Tomi, are known for their exceptional hospitality and fine Slovenian wines. The restaurant offers delectable steaks and a lively atmosphere with happy customers. Additionally, Apartments Pri Mari provides comfortable accommodations near the beach, Museum of Underwater Activities, and Piran Harbour.
Stumbled upon this tiny restaurant just off the street, and what a surprisingly fantastic spot it turned out to be! You can proper tell the dishes are cooked fresh to order, with top & fresh ingredients and they taste absolutely scrumptious. The fish was simply divine, melted in your mouth it did. It was getting on a bit late, and the waiter was clearly knackered, but still dead friendly and smiling.
Pawel — Google review
Possibly the best restaurant in Piran. Local fish and sea food along with fresh products make Mara's dishes a treat. Everything is absolutely delicious, especially when accompanied with Slovenian wine. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is decorated with fish, fishing gears and items, as well as all the many praises and prices they received over the years. It's a must stop in Piran.
Margot — Google review
We went to Pri Mari for an appetizer and a drink. However, the scallops were full of sand. The only reason I’m not giving this one star is because the bread was good.
Delphine — Google review
When we travel (often) I spend a lot of time researching to find unique and special spots for dinner serving great food without pretense; not easy. Pri Mari is exactly the type of place we enjoy. It’s not very big and quite simple in terms of atmosphere. There’s no amazing seaside view but what it does have in abundance is fresh well prepared seafood and other local dishes. We began our meal by sharing a bowl of steaming pasta with fresh shavings of black truffles-delicious. For the main, fresh grilled whole fish, Branzino, for two which was expertly filleted table side and served with some sautéed spinach and potatoes. We shared a bottle of local white wine recommended by the server as well, which like the wine across Europe was very reasonably priced. Food was fantastic as was the chocolate (mousse) tart we had to finish off. The only knock is the lack of AC-even on a cooler day the small space can feel a bit close, so dress in lightweight clothing and you’ll be just fine. Absolutely superb overall and special spot oozing local-ness.
Jim R — Google review
Fantastic place, I cannot recommend it enough. We had smoked tuna carpaccio, fish soup, fuži with spiced calamari, and what can only be described as a mountain of fresh seafood. Indulged in panna cotta and a bottle of house wine (they have it labelled as Pri Mari). Worth taking a detour from any journey in this region.
Klau C — Google review
I went to ask the owner if they had any seating across the street by the sea or even upstairs.. And she just told me to go to another restaurant that has that in a very dry and ride way. She then proceeded to talk about me to other patrons in the restaurant. I thought this was very disrespectful. I had to walk out. In some other countries, good restaurants rent out spaces closer to the ocean and I thought this would be one of them. She did not have to be sold without it
Aaron C — Google review
Unbelievably good fresh sea bream in salt from the oven, fantastic bread and deliciously light local wine. Very kind service and reasonably priced. Why was this restaurant not full last night? We would come again any day.
Henriette V — Google review
Usually it is very difficult to find table so book in advance. We visited twice, first time great calamari grilled and fried with potatoes. The other time we tried also mixed fish plate - fish was amazing! Fish soup was ok, average for me. Orada carpaccio amazing as well.

Brunch restaurant
Cafinho Piran is a popular bar and cafe in the charming town of Piran, Slovenia. It offers a delightful breakfast with a picturesque view. The place is known for its good selection of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, which can be enjoyed until midnight while taking in the serene ambiance of the Adriatic Sea. The staff are friendly and the location provides a great spot to relax and enjoy the night lights of Piran along with tasty brewed drinks.
We stopped for my sister’s bachelorette trip at Cafinho for brunch. We were more than satisfied. The food and drinks were delicious, great prices and deals, everyone who works there is so kind. We felt so welcome. We will definitely come back and would recommend it 10/10!

Love the location in front of the sea. I was there early morning (7 a.m.) so it was quiet and serene. My waitress was kind, and efficient. I ordered a latte and the avocado egg. It was delicious, the ingredients taste fresh. I thought the food was very well priced.

Loved the location, it is right next to the sea. The inside is so cozy, perfect music playing. We stopped for breakfast, everything was so fresh and tasty. Coffee was amazing.
Miriam M — Google review
One of the best places in Piran to get coffee! You have a great view over the boulevard and the Adriatic sea. The only thing I'd say they can improve on is using better quality vanilla gelato for their affogato, I think its store bought, probably better to buy it at the local Gelateria.
Julien W — Google review
We enjoyed the most delicious fresh brunch here! My husband had lovely lightly fluffy pancakes & I had avo on toast. We shared some fresh fruit. Beautiful view - we went for a swim after eating! We’d highly recommend this place for breakfast/brunch/lunch or a light dinner!

Great place for breakfast. We came here for breakfast both days we were here. We ordered the Benedict-ish Royale and it’s one of the best Benedicts we ever had. We also had scrambled eggs and avocado salmon sandwich and both were great but the Benedict with salmon really stood out- definitely order the Benedict-ish Royale. They have great cappuccinos as well and the views of the ocean are fantastic

Chose this place for breakfast during our weekend trip to Piran and we were very satisfied. You can simply judge the popularity of this place just by comparing the number of guests. We ordered multiple breakfast option and I will definitely recomment the FIT glass with greek yoghurt and fresh fruit or the avocado toast with smoked salmon. I also liked the scrambled eggs with grilled vegetables and mozzarella. The coffee was good, service could be a bit quicker, but we were not in a hurry :-)

Went here for sunset drinks and also breakfast, works great for both! Lovely views of the sunset and good drinks, toast was also good. Good selection of breakfast, eggs benedict and avocado salmon toast were both very tasty. Pistachio croissant was also delightful! 😍

Fritolin Pri Cantini is a laid-back restaurant located in central Piran, offering delicious seafood dishes such as grilled calamari and octopus. It is known for serving fresh, local seafood at reasonable prices, making it a popular choice among both locals and tourists. For those looking for a slightly fancier dining experience, La Bottega Dei Sapori in Tartini Square offers Italian-inspired fare like risotto with shrimp and black truffles.
A very charming concept – you order your food at the window and pick it up yourself, while drinks are served directly to your table. In my case, the wait for food was about 30 minutes, but with such a small number of tables and everything being freshly prepared, it’s definitely worth it. The lady working in the kitchen, who was also taking and handing out orders, came across a bit unfriendly – but honestly, given the heat and the number of guests, it’s understandable. We all have tough days sometimes, and it doesn’t affect my overall impression. The atmosphere was relaxed and authentic, and the food – especially the grilled sardines – was delicious. Highly recommended!
Piotr — Google review
Good fish and fried squid — well-prepared and tasty! The €34 portion easily serves 3 people and is served with a delicious sauce. We ordered grilled sea bass, but it seemed to be fried instead, which was disappointing. The tuna comes with polenta by default, but we asked for fries instead. The ginger beer was a highlight — very good! Best to go outside peak hours — we had dinner at 9 PM on a Saturday and had no trouble getting a table or placing our order.
Manuela B — Google review
Fried mixed seafood platter. The anchovies was not piping hot n had gone soft no longer crunchy which was a letdown as we were looking forward to having it with our beer wine. Baked Mussels was fresh but over baked n slightly dry. Atmosphere was great thou if it's not too cold a night.
Timmy C — Google review
Although it seemed that it’s a nice lovely place as previous reviews stated, only half of it is true. The place and the food was OK but nobody mentions that you’d have to wait for your food to be prepared for more than an hour or so. First, you have to pay for the drinks separately and also for the food separately. When we ask the lady who served us the drinks why the duration of the food preparing is so long she said come on it’s prepared freshly and it’s normal, I guess it isn’t normal But it’s up for the people to decide. Before taking a seat, I’d look around and see how many people are there waiting for their food assuming that the waiting time will be long or short.
Fanni V — Google review
What a find! We're first not sure about the place, but eventually decided to give it a go. And, oh man, delighted that we did. The service was fast and the food was mouthwatering. We had their biggest seafood plate and it was soo good that we ordered extra calamari. Polenta was lovely, too. Incredible value. Absolutely recommended!
Nataliia — Google review
Best hole-in-the-wall fish restaurant we’ve been to, not just in Piran! It has an interesting concept, you wait to get a table assigned from the water (which is from the bar next door, they work together). Only then you can order at the window and after paying (for the food only, you pay the waiter before leaving for the drinks directly) you get a small shell with a number for your order. Then from time to time they are hanging the numbers up on a string for all orders that are ready (they usually do a couple at the same time). Food is excellent, prices are descent. Only the pigeons are a bit aggressive looking for food.
Andreas W — Google review
Delicious food. Gets too crowded and finding a seat becomes an issue especially with staff asking people to line up in the square (no queue). After sitting down, order at the window and enjoy
BoyPharoh — Google review
It's a bussy place and it should because the food is fantastic! We had to wait about 10 minutes but was worth it. The kitchen works efficient and serves food in batches and hang wooden fish signs above the counter with the orders that are ready to pick up yourself. This makes is a fun experience and we enjoyed great fresh fish and friendly service on this beautiful square, must go if you are in Piran!

Ladja Podlanica Piran is a unique dining experience located on a floating restaurant where guests can enjoy the daily catch while feeling the gentle rocking of the waves. The menu offers daily specials and a la carte dishes, with an emphasis on fresh seafood. This popular spot provides a comforting and homely atmosphere, making it essential to make reservations in advance during peak seasons.
What an idea for a business! Unordinary attitude to serving sea food to tourists. Always very fresh ingredients, cought by the owner in the nearby bay, the same day. Be quick or.. you'll miss this unusual opportunity ;) There are just few tables and several chairs. They operate not very long in the night.

Such a quaint little place that is full of local experience. The food is freshly made from the day's catch. The host is so kind to explain in detail and make you feel comfortable. The fish which will be cooked was shown and then cooked freshly, just the taste of fish itself was so so good! The Bakala spread was also unique and yum! Most recommended local food experience in Piran! PS: What I also loved was the steel plates and cutlery ❤️

Great view and great food! Seafood is super fresh and tasty. We had a great timing dining with the sun slowly setting.
Yi-Chun H — Google review
It doesn't get more rustic than this. A mom and pap operation (husband and wife) running the entire show on their boat. The food is as fresh as it gets, home style cooking, and the atmosphere is really special because you have people of all walks of life eating at the same tables. Not for Michelin stars goers. This is for those who wish to find something which feels authentic even if it's may not be. For picky eaters, or those which always have to change the ingredients, this is not a place for you. Just warning you.

This restaurant on a boat in the harbor offers not just great food but also an unforgettable atmosphere. Sitting right on the water with views of the old town and the sunset makes it absolutely special. The seafood was fresh and perfectly prepared — especially the grilled fish and octopus. The staff were friendly, attentive, and clearly proud of what they do. You can feel the love and care in every detail, from the presentation of the dishes to the relaxed maritime vibe. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Piran — come here for dinner and enjoy the harbor lights reflecting on the sea.
